Trees such as gora, kankru, palm, naturally growing sundari and hetal have been planted.

HALIDAY ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The Haliday Island Wildlife Sanctuary (also just known as the Haliday Wildlife Sanctuary) is one of several wildlife sanctuaries in the nation of India. The area is approximately six square kilometers in size. It is a part of the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve with the Sundarbans region as a whole becoming a Biosphere Reserve officially in 1989. Kalash Island, in South 24 Parganas, is a part of the Sundarbans National Park that lies at the estuary of the River Matla. Being outside the core area of Sundarbans, visitors with armed guards are permitted to get down on the beach. During winters, it is the breeding ground of the Olive Ridley Turtles that arrive in great numbers on this beach for nesting. Kalash Island is also the home to many varieties of coastal birds and is specially a good place to spot uncommon waders. The Great Stone-curlew or Great Thick-knee (Esacus recurvirostris) is sighted on the beach.

wbtourism

Bakkhali is located on one of the many deltaic islands spread across southern Bengal. Most of the islands are part of the Sundarbans, barring a few at the fringes. Some of these are joined together with bridges over narrow creeks. This small island juts out into the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal. The south facing crescent shaped beach of Bakkhali is one of the rare ones in the world that offer great views of both sunrise and sunset. There is a 8 km long beach stretching from Bakkhali to Frazergunj with gently rolling waves. These are twin towns now forming one continuous locality. Except on an occasional holiday the beach is not crowded. A small stretch near Bakkhali has been lighted up. It is a hard beach suitable for cycling or even driving. One can take long walks with coconut water. Bakkhali is also the name of a river in the Chittagong division of Bangladesh..

wbtourism

Just 2 km north of Bakkhali is the twin town Fraserganj, which is named after Andrew Fraser. Fraser, in early 1900s, tried to build the area into a resort, which he couldn't as the waves frequently washed the constructions. His office ruins can still be seen here. A Wind Energy Farm that generates 1 MW and is soon going to be extended to produce 2 MW is located in Fraserganj.

How to Reach: Tourists can avail the direct buses to Bakkhali that are available from Esplanade in Kolkata. From Bakkhali, can reach Frazergunj by hiring a cycle van. Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary: Where Sundarbans Unveils its Wild Beauty

sajnekhali tour

Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven of biodiversity, offering a unique opportunity to explore the untamed beauty of the largest mangrove forest on Earth. In this blog, we'll embark on a journey to discover the captivating Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, its rich ecosystems, and the enthralling wildlife that calls it home.

Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary serves as the gateway to the renowned Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's largest tidal halophytic mangrove forests. Located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India, this sanctuary is the perfect introduction to the incredible biodiversity and awe-inspiring landscapes of the Sundarbans.

The Sundarbans, known for its intricate network of waterways, is a maze of mangroves, estuaries, and small islands. The Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary is a microcosm of this astonishing ecosystem. Here, the intertwining roots of the mangrove trees serve as nurseries for marine life and offer protection from the tidal currents.

The sanctuary is primarily characterized by mangrove species, including Sundari (Heritierafomes), Goran (Ceriopsdecandra), and Dhundul (Xylocarpusmekongensis). These trees have adapted to survive in saline waters, and their aerial roots, known as pneumatophores, provide vital support and oxygen to the trees.

Sajnekhali is a bird lover's delight. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of avian species, both resident and migratory. Some of the notable residents include White-bellied Sea Eagle, Osprey, and the elusive Masked Finfoot. During the migratory season, you can spot species like the Asian Openbill Stork and the Mangrove Whistler.

The Sundarbans are famous for their population of Royal Bengal Tigers, and Sajnekhali is no exception. The elusive big cats are often spotted during boat safaris along the estuaries. Keep your camera ready as you cruise through the winding waterways, and you may be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures.

Another apex predator that reigns in these waters is the Saltwater Crocodile. The Sundarbans house one of the largest populations of saltwater crocs in the world. Safaris around Sajnekhali often provide close encounters with these formidable reptiles.

A visit to the sanctuary is incomplete without exploring the museum and interpretation center. Here, you can learn about the flora and fauna of the Sundarbans, its cultural significance, and the ongoing conservation efforts.

Exploring the Sundarbans isn't complete without a boat safari. These guided tours navigate the intricate waterways, offering a chance to observe the mangrove forests, wildlife, and the unique aquatic environment. A boat safari is the best way to spot tigers, crocodiles, and the splendid avian life of the region.

Tiger Reserve: A Glimpse into Conservation Sajnekhali is part of the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve established to protect the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger. The reserve is a testament to the efforts to conserve the tiger population in this fragile ecosystem.

Best Time to Visit Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary The ideal time to explore the sanctuary is during the winter months, from November to February when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife sightings are frequent. However, boat safaris can be enjoyed year-round.

How to Reach Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary The sanctuary is easily accessible from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Visitors can reach the nearby town of Godkhali and proceed to Sajnekhali by boat. Various tour operators offer packages that include transportation, accommodation, and guided safaris.

Conclusion:

Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary is an entrancing window to the wild beauty of the Sundarbans. It's a place where the mysteries of the mangrove forests, the magic of the waterways, and the majesty of the Royal Bengal Tigers converge. A visit to this sanctuary is an opportunity to connect with nature's wonders and explore the delicate balance of life in one of the world's most unique ecosystems.

Ans. Bonbibi is the  symbolic Mother of the Fishermen. The inhabitants of Sundarban have strong faith in the folk cult of Bonbibi (queen of the forest), the guardian deity of the forest. The fishermen always refer to Bonbibi as a preliminary topic before their economic forays into the forest. There are many versions of the story but it’s basically an agreement between the humans and the non-humans that allows both the entities to depend on the forest and respect each other’s needs. Because Tigers and humans share the same Food as they both depend on the forest

There are limited options of stay near the Sunderbans National Park and most of them are resorts, which have package deals that include transport from and to Kolkata, full board and boat cruises around the mangroves. However, from reading reviews and seeing pictures online, we realized that the resort’s guests are taken in one large boat around the national park. We feared that this would be noisy and not as nice as having a boat to ourselves. So we chose to stay at West Bengal Tourism’s Tourist Lodge, which is located on the island of Sajenkhali and is the only one within the boundaries of the National Park. Here, we could arrange for our own private boat cruise, which cost us around Rs.3000 (including boatman’s fee, permit fee and Guide fee).

To book the Tourist Lodge we visited the West Bengal Toursim Office in Kolkata (junction of Hemant Basu Sarani Rd and RN Mukherjee Rd, BBD Bagh. Phone: 91 33 22437260) and got it done in person. A phone call, if it had been received, would have worked too.

The lodge is old and has about 28 rooms stacked one beside the other along a long wooden deck on the upper floor of a 2-storied wooden structure. When we got there some construction work was underway and it looked like rooms were either been added or updated on the ground floor. Our double-room was small but comfortable with an attached, western-style bathroom. The only troubling factor of the room was that its walls are quite thin so if you are stuck there during a busy period, falling or staying asleep could be a problem. Luckily, there were no creepy-crawly problems, except for pesky monkeys who lived on the trees surrounding the property.

The lodge has a dining room where all the meals are served. Our room rate (Rs. 1000 per night) included breakfast and dinner, which was super-reasonable. For breakfast, on both days, we were served omelets with oily puris and a vegetable dish, along with tea/coffee. For dinner there were rotis, rice, a vegetable dish, dal, papad and a chicken-dish – quite nice! They packed us a lunch of super-oily Parathas and pickle for the boat cruise and this along with the bottles of mineral water we ordered, understandably cost us extra.

Sajnkekhali’s Tourist Lodge is not a great place to stay but the only non-resort option available close to the national park. It’s conveniently located as the office for getting permits is on the same island. And the Lodge’s manager is quite friendly and efficient when it comes to booking boat cruises, planning the day or ordering food. I wish the tourism dept did more to renovate or update the place and make it more comfortable. They could also setup buses from Kolkata and ferry rides from Godkhali for visitors to avail of; using the local transport system to get there, though interesting and cheap, is long and tedious.

Sundarban Trip: World's Largest Mangrove Forest Must be Your Next Weekend Getaway

Photo of Vaswati

P.C. Wikipedia

Photo of Sundarban Trip: World's Largest Mangrove Forest Must be Your Next Weekend Getaway by Vaswati

Sundarbans, the largest Mangrove Forest in the world is situated in the vast delta formed by the confluence of the great rivers the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Meghna in the Bay of Bengal. The name Sundarban is derived from the abundance presence of Sundari trees in this area. Shared between the two countries India and Bangladesh, the Sundarban National Park has been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Biosphere Reserves is also home to different endangered Flora and Fauna and the kingdom of the Bengal tigers which is popularly known as Royal Bengal Tiger. They can swim easily in salt water.

The Sundarban National Park is accessible only by boats unlike other National Parks of India, making Sundarban trip one of the most attractive one on earth and an undiscovered paradise for wild life enthusiast, birders, bird watchers and nature lovers.

Several tour packages of different tour operators are available to explore this Mangrove Forest by boat. After doing some online research, I chose the Package conducted by West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. It's a 2 N 3D package from Kolkata to Kolkata.

WBTDC conducted Sundarban tour in two large cruisers - M.V.Chitrarekha and M.V. Sarbajaya. The M.V. Chitrarekha is larger than the latter. It has a coupe of five pax and cabins. Apart from that both the cruisers have AC and Non – AC berths in the Middle Deck with a large four side open Upper Deck having sitting arrangement and a Lower Deck with dormitory. Berths are like AC 2- tier of Indian Railways but more spacious than that. Cabins can be locked from inside. There're large doors on the berth area that can be closed as well. Outside views can be seen from the cabins/berths through large windows. Both the cruisers have kitchen facility and attached decent western bathroom with shower & wash basin. I booked this trip with M.V. Sarbajaya.

Sundarban Trip Begins

Tour starts from WBTDC office at 3/2 B.B.D Bag East. After confirmation of booking slip, seats are allotted in the AC bus .

Bus departed sharp on 8.30 for Sonakhali. Soon after, breakfast and 1 ltr. mineral water bottle were provided in the bus. After leaving the city, the bus went through the narrow road flanked by fisheries land on either side. Bus reached Sonakhali by 11.30 am and dropped us a few walks away from the Jetty.

You have to walk 10 minutes or you can hire a Van Rickshaw ( on your own payment ) to reach the Jetty. From Sonakhali you will be transferred to the large cruiser Chitrarekha or Sarbajaya, anchored in the middle of the river, by small motorized boat. My accommodation was at lower berth in the middle deck of M.V.Sarbajaya.

As soon as all the tourists were shifted, the vessel started sailing through the river Hogol and our journey by boat began.

During the sail, you will be visited five most important and breathtakingly beautiful Watch Towers of this Mangrove Forest namely Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, Burirdabri, Jhingakhali and Dobanki.

After leaving luggage in the cabin, I went up to the upper deck to have a great views.

River is wide here. You can see the small villages and village people along the bank of the river. You will be crossed one or two more jetties on the way too. Occasional sight of other boats is also very common during your Sundarban trip. As soon as you started enjoying the journey, you would be greeted with mouth watering lunch comprising of Rice, Dal, Beguni, Fish, Chatni, Papad, Rosgulla and 1 liter. drinking water at the upper deck. After lunch you may continue to enjoy the cruise sitting on the upper deck or relax at the middle deck.

Tiger Debta is known as Dakshin Rai in Sundarbans. Along with Bagh Debta, Bono Bibi ( The lady of the Forest ) is universally worshiped here by Honey collectors, Wood cutters and Fisher men before entering the forest against the attack from the tigers.

Bagh Debta (Tiger God)

Photo of Sundarban Trip: World's Largest Mangrove Forest Must be Your Next Weekend Getaway by Vaswati

It's believed that the demon king, Dakshin Rai, an arch-enemy of Banbibi, actually appears in the disguise of a tiger and attacks human beings. Bono bibi is the ultimate saviour of the forest and worshiped universally by Hindu and Muslims.

While coming back, we witnessed a beautiful sunset in Sundarban.

The vessel is anchored in the middle of the river for night halt. In the evening, you will be provided with fish fry, pokora and tea. After having snacks, you may go to relax in your berth or sit on the upper deck. In winter, the evenings are generally cool.

The upper deck was illuminated with bulbs. Dense darkness all around. Nothing was visible. You could only feel the calmness and tranquility of the forest. After an early sumptuous dinner I went down to my berth for sleeping.

Next morning, you will be cruising through the deep creeks towards Burirdabri beat. Waterways towards Burirdabri beat is spectacular. Surroundings greenery of the mangrove trees and their aerial roots awestruck you.

The first sight of the campsite is very impressive. It is notably picturesque.

Photo of Sundarban Trip: World's Largest Mangrove Forest Must be Your Next Weekend Getaway by Vaswati

It has a remote watchtower. The layout of this watchtower is very graceful where you walk over mangrove cage trail and then through the mud cage and wooden bridge finally culminating to a wooden watch tower over looking Bangladesh. This watch Tower is located on Raymangal river adjoining Bangladesh. The view point is known as Raimongal View Point. Buridhabri watch tower is a must see place.

On the way, you may witness Cargo ships. River is not very wide here. You can see lots of mangroves on either sides of the river clearly. The sight of local fishing boats here and there add a charm to the landscape.

Apart from other birds that can be sighted, it is said that the sighting of Brahmini Kites is very much likely from this watchtower although we could not seen any.

The vessel is anchored in the middle of the river for night halt near Sajnekhali just like previous day. In the evening, you will be treated with snacks and hot tea. You can sit leisurely on the upper deck or relax in your Berth. I was sitting on the deck along with the others. Our guide provided us dozens of interesting and thrilling stories of tiger attacks, crocodile attacks and also about the life of the local people of the Sundarbans.

Next day the vessel started sailing early in the morning. When I went up to the upper deck, other tourists were already there with a binocular and zoom lenses. On that day, you will be heading towards Dobanki campsite. Various kind of beautiful birds are seen in this stretch of waterways.

Sunrise @ Sundarbans

Photo of Sundarban Trip: World's Largest Mangrove Forest Must be Your Next Weekend Getaway by Vaswati

Two to three kind of kingfishers, green bee eaters, egrets and many more. Our guide was helping to spot the birds. Gradually the sun rose. The sight was spectacular. On that day vessel will be sailing through a narrow creeks with dense mangrove forests on both sides. Few hours of sailing, you will be in a wide river with swampy land on either side.

May be it was low tide time. Soon after breakfast, suddenly our guide showed us a crocodile floating in the distance and a turtle along with the crocodile. Everyone was busy to get a glimpse of it with binocular and photographers were busy to capture it.

You can spot numerous snowy egrets busy to catch their breakfast at the edge of the river. Morning cruise on that part of the river is

very enjoyable and full of excitement on account of spotting of wild lives and beautiful birds around. Everyone eagerly looking here and there to spot the birds or wildlife. Suddenly one of us pointing out a spot where a small herd of deer were grazing in the swamp area around the trees. Few of them was laying under tree shade.

Soon after you will be sailing through the river with Hetal bush along the shoreline. It was looking amazing. We reached Dobanki Campsite around 10 am.

This watchtower offers an unique experience of watching wildlife. It is renowned for having a 20 foot high 150 m long enclosed canopy walk.

Dobanki jetty

We started canopy walk keeping an eye on both sides of forestscape. But our bad luck. We did not spot any wild life during our Sundarban trip.

But soothing greenery around was eye catching.

Canopy walk that goes to deep forest area

There was another jetty at the other end of the canopy walk. But we were warned not to get down this jetty as river crocodile are found here.

While transferring to the large vessel from Dobanki camp, we saw again a herd of deer across the river. They were grazing in the forests.

Soon after departing Dobanki, you will be started sailing through the Matla river. The spread of the river was very wide. Guide told us the land seen far away across the river is Bangladesh. The cruising through the vast river was really thrilling.
