This was a perfect mother-daughter trip at the right time of year to avoid crowds. All of our drivers and tour guides were awesome! The accommodations were likewise wonderful. Communication with our tour company was great and any last-minute changes were taken care of, so we had no worries. We had nearly daily contact from the company, whose staff checked in with us before and during our trip. Our itinerary had a good balance of planned activities and free time, with lots of good suggestions from our tour guides. The company worked cooperatively with us in planning and replanning our itinerary over the course of nearly nine months! So flexible! Thank you, Zicasso and company, for another perfect mother-daughter trip!

Zicasso’s tour operator did an excellent job planning our trip! We planned a vacation to Italy and Switzerland and wanted to see as much as we could with our limited time off. Our tour company worked in nearly all of our requests, planning an itinerary involving five cities in 10 days. Each of the hotels was great and all activities and train transfers went smoothly. We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation and would work with this company again on a future European vacation.

This is the fourth trip we've booked with a Zicasso travel agent and it was another success. We worked with our travel team and could not be happier with the experience. We had originally planned a Croatia-only trip, but expanded it to include Slovenia and day trips to Bosnia Herzegovina (BH) and Montenegro. These were areas we had no experience with and relied on our travel team's recommendations. There are several aspects to a successful trip: locations, hotels, activities, and organization, and all were well planned. First, we are so glad we added the three countries, especially Slovenia, which was spectacular. Every hotel was great and in line with what we like. In addition, the room choices were good, with upgrades to suites and rooms with views and great balconies. Ours was a two-week trip with activities scheduled for almost every day, including guides and five wine tastings. Every guide was fantastic and the wine visits amazing. We were especially surprised and delighted by the high-end and modern winery in Mostar, BH. The area’s wines are very good. Every aspect of the trip was organized. Our agent sent me 37 different vouchers for each of our hotels, drivers, guides, and activities. I can't recommend her enough.

Expert Tips for Discerning Travelers

Bosnia & Herzegovina Adventure

8 days | weave your way through the history and landscapes of bosnia and herzegovina.

Gorgeous Konjic Bridge with town and mountains in the background, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Nature, history and culture collide across Bosnia and Herzegovina on this round-trip eight-day exploration from Sarajevo. Though so recently touched by upheaval, the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina are eager to share their history and customs with you – through good food, gripping stories and thrilling adventures. Spot wild horses in the mountains, step inside a preserved bunker that remained a national secret for decades, go hiking in the mountains and get a taste of the Balkans’ special brand of perseverance and hospitality.

Trip overview

 • Ease into your adventure with a meal hosted by locals Mustafa and Mersiha in their kitchen overlooking the city of Sarajevo.
 • Go off-road in search of wild horses in the foothills of Mount Cincar – our expert local leaders and guides know all the best spots to look.
 • Explore the historic and off-the-beaten-path town of Jajce, the birthplace of Yugoslavia and home to centuries-old architecture and a fairytale waterfall.
 • Step inside Josip Tito’s bunker – a massive and impeccably preserved underground nuclear shelter from the Yugoslav era that just recently opened to visitors.
 • Meet Sarajevo’s only female coppersmith while wandering the cobblestone walkways of the city’s historic cultural centre.
 • This itinerary requires a good level of fitness due to exploring towns on foot and hiking.
 • You'll occasionally use public transport on this trip, providing for a truly authentic travel experience. You will need to manage your own luggage on and off vehicles, so we recommend that you pack light.
 • Most of the accommodation on this trip is in hotels, however, we also spend two nights at a countryside guesthouse where accommodation is also in twin-share rooms. Many travellers find this experience offers a rewarding, authentic slice of rural hospitality.

Dobrodosli! Get acquainted with your trip leader and fellow expeditioners at a welcome meeting at the hotel at 6 pm, and then head out together into the surrounding hills of Sarajevo for a cooking demonstration and welcome dinner with local hosts Mersiha and Mustafa in their home overlooking the city (with the best views of Sarajevo, they say!). Learn how to make burek (Bosnian pita), and then enjoy a hearty, home-made meal of dolma (stuffed vegetables) while Mersiha and Mustafa share stories about their lives, Bosnian cuisine and the city they call home.

 • Hotel (1 night)
 • Sarajevo - Bosnian cooking demonstration & dinner

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Hop aboard the public bus to Jajce, arriving about midday with time for an optional lunch and a walking tour with a local guide. Jajce is the birthplace of Yugoslavia, so be sure to visit the AVNOJ Museum to learn about Jajce and Bosnia in the 20th century. We’ll stop by the 22 m Pliva Waterfall in the centre of town on the way. This small town dates back to ancient times and maintains a captivating mix of cultures and religions to this day. The evening is yours to explore. Don’t miss the incredible views atop the town’s 14th-century fortress.

 • Jajce - City walk & Pliva Waterfall

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Head south via private transfer towards Mostar – but first, a stop in Livno to head up to the base of Cincar Mountain, and there’s no better way to ride than by 4WD! Take in the view of the Dinaric Alps before venturing off-road in search of a unique sight in Europe – some of the 400 wild horses that call these foothills home (our expert guides always find some). Afterward, carry on to the town of Mostar, famed for its iconic Stari Most, which stands as a symbol of reconciliation and international cooperation, and hosts a breathtaking diving competition in the summer months. Learn all about this historic city on a guided walking tour before settling into your hotel for the night.

 • Livno – Wild horse safari
 • Mostar - Guided walking tour & craft workshop visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Spend the day exploring the nature, history and treats of the Herzegovina region, the southern portion of the country. Start with a stop at Blagaj Tekke, a dervish monastery perched above the Buna River at the base of a towering cliff. Entry into the sacred site, now also a museum, is included. Admire Ottoman architecture and tour the colourful rooms. On to Stolac, you’ll pop into Mehmedbasica Kuca (a historic house) for a slice of smokvara (traditional fig cake) before proceeding on for a short hike and a dip at Kravica waterfall. Back in Mostar around 6 pm, you’ll have a free evening to explore at your leisure.

 • Blagaj – Blagaj Tekke monastery
 • Stolac - Coffee & cake at Mehmedbašića Kuća
 • Trebižat River - Kravica Waterfall

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Fuel up for the day with a Bosnian coffee demonstration in a local, traditional coffeehouse using beans freshly roasted on-site. Travel to the nearby picturesque town of Konjic, known for its military history. Tour the Armijska Ratna Komanda ARK D-0, a.k.a. Tito’s Bunker – an impressive nuclear shelter and command centre built in 1953 to house the head of the Yugoslavian army and up to 350 military staff. The nearly 7000-square-metre, 100-room underground facility went largely unscathed during the Yugoslav Wars and today stands as a unique monument to the former Yugoslavia. Your knowledgeable local guide will share stories and insights into life in the Yugoslav era. From there, settle into your countryside accommodation. Get a sense of remote life by taking a stroll along a riverside path before enjoying a home-cooked, organic dinner back at the guesthouse.

 • Guesthouse (1 night)
 • Konjic - Armijska Ratna Komanda ARK D-0 (Tito’s Bunker) tour
 • Konjic - Herzogovian Home-cooked Meal
 • Konjic - Bosnian coffee demonstration

This morning, enjoy a homemade breakfast featuring regional specialties (how do homemade prosciutto or cream-filled donuts sound?). Then, drive to Umoljani. When you arrive you'll embark on a circular hike to the mountain village of Lukomir, near the Bjelasnica mountain. Home to some incredible hiking trails and myths of dragons, Lukomir is the highest and most remote village in the country, with a population of only 15! Today's hike is along the most beautiful route in the area, along a path that winds up and down the rolling mountains, green and otherwordly. When you arrive in the village, you'll be treated to some homemade cheese tastings in one of the village households, followed by some freshly baked meat pies. Mingle with the locals, explore the tiny village and then make your way back to Umoljani for the night.

 • Lukomir - Home-cooked lunch
 • Umoljani – Bjelašnica Mountains hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours. Your trekking time will be approximately 8 hours or 16 km with 750 m of elevation gain.

Today's hike requires moderate fitness. There will be taxi services from Lukomir if you'd rather drive instead of hike from the half way point.

This morning you'll drive to Sarajevo, the heart of the country. After checking in to the hotel, set out into the city for a guided walking tour. You’ll visit the shop of Bosnia’s sole female coppersmith, Nermina Alic, who learned the trade from her father and continues the family business today, using traditional methods to handcraft coffeepots, candleholders and plates. Wander among the shops and stalls of Bascarscija, the historic bazaar in the city’s cultural centre. Join the optional farewell dinner tonight and top it off with a slice of Sarajevska baklava.

 • Sarajevo – Guided City Tour
 • Sarajevo - Coppersmith visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.

The expedition comes to an end after breakfast today in Sarajevo. If you'd like to extend your adventure, just get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

 • Sarajevo - Sarajevo Museum - BAM10
 • Sarajevo - Jewish Museum - BAM3

My daughter and I really enjoyed the Dubrovnik-to-Dubrovnik self driving tour that took us for 9 days and 8 nights through Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia. The history and beauty of these countries was amazing and we would definitely plan to return some day, especially to Croatia. The hotels that TourRadar selected for us were very good, especially Hotel Neptune in Dubrovnik, where we spent three nights. If there is one area that I think TourRadar needs to improve on is the timeliness in delivery of travel vouchers. It said in their literature that I would be receiving these documents 2-3 weeks before the trip, but I had to call them several times -- finally speaking to a manager -- before they were able to get their partner company Nature Trips to send the documents. I only got them one week before the start of the trip and only three days before I had to leave for Europe. So this made me a bit nervous, since I had never used TourRadar before. Also, on their portal there is a section for me to view my Tour Itinerary. This information was never updated when we added an extra day in the city of Split in the middle of the trip (several months before our trip). So I wanted to share this itinerary with my family before I left, but it was not correctly listed on the portal. Marko from Tour Radar was especially helpful by providing some recommended restaurants along the way. We were able to eat at some of them and enjoyed our meals there. Overall, a very enjoyable trip.
The tour in Sarajevo wasn’t as good as I expected, mostly because the poor communication of the team members in the other tour group they work with, but the staff of Nature Trips had a good attitude and very responsive and responsible. So this rating is for the service of Nature trips ONLY.

Sadly Traveling with Intrepid was just plain disappointing. We were booked a double room on our Croatia Sailing Trip in 2018 for 2020 as the last part of our Honeymoon and was unfortunately like so many due to Covid, couldn't travel. The trip was pushed back to 2023 and we were excited to finally go. Booked 5 years in advance and the first book on our boat. Keep this in mind as we go . . . When we arrived, we found our boat was unavailable due to engine problems, understandable and a newer boat had been arranged, Great :-) We were driven to another wharf and led to our boat by our skipper. The room on board that we were given was not a double. . . Not even close but the other two couples on board were given large double rooms - how is this fair?? We paid the same and booked first!! (one of these couples only booked a few weeks before we departed). Why would you sell a single space as a double????? I was told "this is just how boats are". So we slept very little and woke up sore and stiff every day. Our skipper then proceed to advise us he had never had more than 5 guests plus himself on a vessel such small size - WE HAD 8 GUESTS PLUS HIM! My husband and i were expected to share a room the same size that the skipper had to himself, half the size of the actual double. One of the other guests had to sleep on the couch in the galley due to the configuration ( meaning we couldn't use it all trip), another guest was saturated in the night because his window seals leaked. We also got wet in the night as our window also leaked. We were then advised there would be NO SNORKLING GEAR as was promised on the Intrepid website - I was particularly upset by this as it was one of the reasons we even booked a sailing trip in Croatia. I adore snorkeling and was heartbroken. We were told to buy some gear ourselves when we stopped on one of the Island but couldn't find any at the places we stopped. The skipper then left us, we didn't see him until the next day - this happened every night and a couple of times, skippers from other boats had to come helps us secure mast lines etc because he had left us.. NO SAFELY BREIEFINGS ( i still don't know where the life jackets were), given vague directions to the supermarket and told we could no use the showers on the boat, only on land at the wharfs we stopped at overnight - some of which were truly gross. The skipper then proceeded to shower onboard EVERYDAY. He advised us we would be skipping 2 of the islands on the plan as we would need to conclude our trip one day early Including Vis and the Blue cave. When i mentioned this was something important to me to visit, he advised we would visit a better cave, much less busy. We didn't, we just skipped that whole part. We skipped 2 islands, TWO?! Completed our sailing a day early with NO COMPENSATION due to the boat needing to be returned to Split for the next group and have been ignored by Intrepid since, In fact they have lied repeatedly to my Travel agent about being in touch with us when we asked to discuss a partial refund due to the above reasons. We have been waiting almost 2 months and no contact at all from them. Croatia is beautiful and i highly recommend visiting, doing a sailing trip but 150% absolutely DO NOT DO IT WITH INTREPID. Just a S**T company with very little care for customers. "Pack as many as you can in" should be their Catch phrase. You ruined my Honeymoon Intrepid and you should be ashamed.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the wonderful experience I had during my recent tour with your company. Our exceptional tour leader Ivana Vidovic created personal connections with each of us. She took the time to understand our interests and made sure everyone felt included. She was extremely professional, passionate & knowledgeable of all countries & cities visited. I wholeheartedly recommend Ivana Vidovic and Intrepid travel to anyone seeking an incredible travel experience. Angela Miethke

Wow wow wow! This was fantastic experience! If I had to choose where to spend only 3days in Balkans, this would be 1st choice!!! No hidden costs, and as I said above what you see is what U get! Location is PERFECT, on river bank, at finish of rafting tour. For only 135eur per person we had 3nights, 8 meals (all traditional, huge and AMAZING), day of rafting, day of 4x4 safari and hiking, all costs included. Beer and juices are excluded, but very very low priced.. Everything is really fantastic. Staff is great, so kind people, one manager spent over 2h with us and help us make plan for next days in area, I really appreciate than kind of things. Free wi-fi..free parking, very cozy accommodation in double bed bungalow Be aware if you are coming by navigation, last 20km navi can lead you on opposite side of river and if so-you will lose over 1h driving back Tara river is..............beyond all expectations, I have never experienced such s beautiful nature. Rafting is so much fun, but safe in same time (guides are very professional and equipment very good).

Excellent tour. I was made to feel special right from the go, as I received a very warm welcome. I learnt so much of the history of the Balkans and was introduced to places I had never heard of. The restaurant choices choices were wonderful. I learnt to eat and appreciate local food All guides were amazing but I loved Viktor in North Macedonia because of his friendly and quiet personality. Mike was amazing as a tour leader, who made sure everything was up to standard . He also checked that I was having a great experience. Ivan our drive is one of the best. To Tiana and Ivan the photographers who accompanied us, thank you for ensuring I had the best time. Your photographs and videos are very special. My highlights, way to many to mention but Kotor, Postajne caves, Tirana, Skopje and Sarajeva were some but for different reasons. Would I book Balkland again definitely. The experience is what counts and I really learnt to appreciate the varied countries and gained a small insight into their beauty and history.
Best Tour Ever!!! That is saying something since we travel by tour annually. We're already planning our next tour with Balkland!!! Mike treated us to an exceptional tour!!! It was the perfect balance of tour with plenty of personal time to steep ourselves in the peaceful serenity of Medjugorje and all the services available for visiting pilgrims. We were so grateful for the local guide Blazenka who Mike introduced us to. She shared the incredible history and spirituality of Medjugorje with heart felt joy and her own personal experiences. She also let Mike know that Ivan would be having an extraordinary apparition at the Blue Cross on our last night in Medjugorje so we were able to attend that incredible event. After saying good bye to Medjugorje, Mike took us to the Unesco heritage site Pocitelj, a 15th century village. Then we had a wonderful tour at the impressive Andrija Winery. On the drive back to Sarajevo we visited the gorgeous Kravica Waterfalls and the lovely Bona Spring recreational park!!! Our tour ended with an evening stroll thru historic downtown Sarajevo and a delicious final dinner together!!! It was perfect!!! We are so looking forward to returning for another memorable tour with Balkland!!!

Great itinerary, fantastic guide , the out of way places, clear instructions, great and polite driver, great humor from guide and very friendly. Wonderful tour.
An excellent trip to a beautiful country with outstanding local guides. The itinerary provides a good mix of walking in great scenery with time spent exploring the cities of Bosnia. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? The rafting trip down the Neretva River. This was my first experience of white water rafting and I found it exhilarating. The Neretva canyon itself is magnificent - with plenty of rapids punctuated by really peaceful sections between vertical rock walls. The walking in the Sudjeska National Park was a wonderful experience - rocky peaks and grassy hills. It was so quiet you almost felt that our party had the mountains to ourselves. What did you think of your group leader? Samer was simply outstanding - the best guide I have had on any of my trips. He is extremely knowledgeable about his country and provides a very balanced view of its recent history. He has a great love for the mountains of Bosnia and is sure to inspire you. He ensured that all the trip arrangements went smoothly and is an extremely patient guy - despite us probably asking the same questions several times over. During our visit to Bosnia Samer was ably assisted by Srdjan - a tower of strength, whose "Tardis" like rucksack produced flasks of hot water (tea/coffee), biscuits, fruit and all manner of nibbles to keep us going on the walking days. Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Go with an open mind and do not expect gourmet cuisine (especially at the start of the holiday in the first two hotels). The restaurants in Sarajevo and Mostar are very good, however, and the prices cheap. Is there anything else you would like to add? I would highly recommend this tour, and, the Choose Balkans company. From the moment we touched down, to the last day, every detail was handled seamlessly. Our guide, Illir, a former teacher, is well versed in the history, geography and culture of the Balkans. My wife and I had a terrific trip!
This covered lots of territory , lots of good sights , and opportunities to do a few extras on your own . The group size made it easy to get into areas larger groups can’t .

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the  Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina  website for the most current visa information.

You need a passport valid for at least three months past your planned date of departure.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will deny entry to U.S. passport holders who attempt to enter on expired U.S. passports or U.S. passports which were previously reported as lost or stolen.

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days total within a period of six months from the date of first entry.

Bosnia and Herzegovina does not issue visas to U.S. travelers prior to travel for any length of stay or purpose of travel, including diplomatic assignments.

Airlines may deny boarding to travelers on a one-way ticket or a ticket with a return date beyond three months from the date of arrival. Verify with the airline before travel.

If staying in a private residence for three or more days, you or your host must register your stay with the local police or field office of the Department for Foreigners within 24 hours of arrival.

Temporary Residence Permits:

U.S. citizens staying more than 90 days must apply for a temporary residence permit from the local field office of the Department for Foreigners of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Security. The process is complex. Visit the  Department for Foreigners of the Ministry of Security website  for detailed information and requirements.

Gather the required documentation well in advance and submit the application as soon after arriving in-country as possible. You must submit your temporary residence permit application at least 15 days prior to the expiration of the initial 90-day visa-free period of stay.

You are required to submit a police report from your local, U.S. police department certifying you have no criminal record. This must be issued within 6 months of the application.

After all application requirements are met, a months-long delay can occur before a residence permit is issued. U.S. citizens who submit complete applications may remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina while awaiting decisions.

The maximum duration of a temporary residence permit is 12 months (renewals are possible).

Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least three months after the end of the requested temporary residence permit period.

Requirements for minors traveling to Bosnia and Herzegovina:

 • Notarized permission from the parents or guardians is required for minors under 18 traveling alone.
 • If the child is accompanied by one parent, particularly if the parent has a different last name from the child’s, it is recommended, although not legally required, that the accompanying parent carry a notarized letter from the other parent giving permission to travel.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Safety and Security

Terrorism : Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking soft targets and are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, rudimentary explosive devices, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)

 • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
 • Places of worship
 • Shopping malls and markets
 • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Violent incidents :

 • Local criminals use firearms and explosives to settle disputes, with the majority of incidents involving improvised explosives in Sarajevo occurring after dark. The foreign community is rarely targeted, but collateral damage can occur.
 • See LGBTQI+ Travelers, below, for information regarding recent violent incidents targeting members of the LGBTQI+ community.

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Crime : The overall crime rate for the country is high, and Sarajevo has a high rate of property-related crime.

 • The most common criminal activities in Sarajevo are robberies, residential break-ins, vehicle break-ins and theft, and pickpocketing.
 • Pickpocketing occurs in areas frequented by tourists in Sarajevo.
 • Be alert at all times, especially after dark and in locations frequented by tourists, such as cafés, parking garages, shopping areas, and restaurants.
 • Take normal precautions to protect your property from theft and employ personal security measures, such as traveling in groups and staying in well-lit areas after dark.
 • Avoid carrying large sums of money.
 • People wearing backpacks stand out and attract the attention of pickpockets.

Landmines :

 • Landmine explosions have injured over 1,200 and killed over 600 people in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1995.
 • Minefields, active landmines, and unexploded ordnances are a threat throughout the country and deaths from explosions have occurred as recently as March 2023.
 • Stay on hard surfaced areas and out of abandoned buildings. Observe mine warning signs throughout the country. Consult with the latest landmine maps via the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Center . Regardless of an area’s mine status, avoid unmarked trails.
 • For more information about landmines and unexploded ordinance, please visit the website of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Center .

Demonstrations can occur anywhere in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international or sporting events.

 • Demonstrations can be unpredictable. Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
 • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
 • Large demonstrations, even if peaceful, can create traffic congestion and lead to closures of public transportation, roadways, and sidewalks.

Soccer matches :

 • Rival fans occasionally fight and cause property damage and physical injuries. Plan ahead to avoid the area.
 • Physical confrontations surrounding soccer matches have included right-wing nationalist, racist, or anti-LGBTQI+ violence.
 • Large groups of soccer fans can quickly become violent. Avoid crowds and large groups.
 • Large crowds before and after matches can create significant traffic congestion, crowding at drinking and eating establishments, and problems for pedestrians. Road and sidewalk closures are common.

Feral dogs :

 • Avoid stray dogs. Packs or individual dog attacks occur in urban and rural areas and can be unpredictable.
 • Though emergency medical facilities can treat dog bites and rabies vaccines are available, travelers should consider a series of pre-exposure rabies vaccinations prior to arrival.
 • For further information, please consult the CDC’s information on rabies .

International Financial Scams : See the Department of State and the FBI pages for information.

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 122 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (387) 33 704 000. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Assistance the Embassy may be able to provide to crime victims:

 • Help you find appropriate medical care
 • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
 • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
 • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms
 • Provide a list of local attorneys
 • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the United States .
 • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
 • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
 • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance but should also report incidents to the police in the area where the incident occurred.

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities are infrequent. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified. In the event of an injury, medical treatment may only be available in/near major cities. Outside of cities, first responders may not be available to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

CRIMINAL PENALTIES : In Bosnia and Herzegovina, you are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, imprisoned, or deported. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

It is against the law to photograph military or secure installations, including airports, equipment, bridges, government checkpoints, troops, or embassies. If in doubt, ask permission before taking photographs.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, penalties are severe for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs. Courts impose long jail sentences and heavy fines.

See our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Financial Services/Transactions :

 • The official currency in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Convertible Mark (KM or BAM), which is pegged to the euro at approximately 2 KM = 1 euro.
 • Bosnia and Herzegovina is predominantly a cash economy.
 • Some businesses accept credit cards, but travelers should not expect to use credit cards to cover all expenses.
 • Automated teller machines (ATMs) are available at the banks in Sarajevo and other cities and towns.
 • Traveler’s checks are not widely accepted and cannot be cashed in every bank.
 • Cash transfers from abroad may involve delays, but Western Union transfers are available in many banks and post offices throughout the country.
 • All official payments must be made in convertible marks (KM).
 • Foreigners attempting to exchange money or claim a wire transfer should be prepared to present their passport to complete the transaction.

LGBTQI+ Travelers : There are no current legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Bosnia and Herzegovina, although elected officials in the Republika Srpska have proposed banning LGBTQI+ rights activists from holding events at, visiting, or working in educational institutions. Elected officials have also said that they will not permit any LGBTQI+ events in the Republika Srpska entity.

 • Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is widespread in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
 • Acts of violence and harassment targeting LGBTQI+ individuals or organizations supporting LGBTQI+ rights have occurred, and police were sometimes slow to respond or failed to investigate the incidents and prosecute perpetrators.
 • Government officials have made derogatory comments about LGBTQI+ persons and about organizations promoting human rights.
 • While the laws at the state, entity, and Brcko District levels prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, authorities have not fully enforced them. Some elected officials have proposed laws to restrict the activities of LGBTQI+ rights groups.
 • Pride event participants have been threatened in the past and participants should expect a heavy police presence.
 • See our LGBTQI+ Travel Information page and section six of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities : Bosnia and Herzegovina’s laws prohibit discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, but the law is only partially enforced, and discrimination continues.

 • Social acceptance of persons with disabilities is not as prevalent as in the United States. The most common type of accessibility is wheelchair accessibility to public buildings.
 • Accessibility is limited in urban public transportation, lodging, and communication/information and generally unavailable outside urban areas.
 • There is limited availability of sign language interpreters, personal assistants, or other related services. Access to special rental, repair, or replacement equipment is very limited.

Students : See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers : See our travel tips for women travelers .

Medical Facilities and Medications:

 • The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.
 • Adequate medical facilities may not be available outside of Sarajevo and may not be up to U.S. standards.
 • Medications may not be obtainable in, or shippable to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
 • You may consider bringing your own supply of prescription drugs and preventive medicines, but you should confirm with a medical professional before you travel that medications are legal for use or importation to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Some medications which are legal for use in the United States may not be legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
 • Marijuana-derived compounds, such as cannabidiol (CBD), are not legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Travelers are limited to a seven-day supply of any medications that are considered controlled substances in the United States.
 • Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your relevant medical documentation, such as a recent doctor’s prescription and transcript of medical history.
 • All major surgery is performed in public hospitals.
 • English-speaking health providers (including mental health services) may not be available.
 • Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For Emergency Services in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dial: Police – 122, Ambulance – 124, Fire – 123

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Bosnia and Herzegovina  Agency for Medicines  to ensure the medication is legal in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Vaccinations:   Although no vaccinations are required to enter BiH, be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended  by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Additional Health Information:

 • World Health Organization
 • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Air pollution is a significant problem in most cities in BiH. Consider the impact seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary.

The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates by season. It is at its worst in the winter. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure are:

 • Infants, children, and teens
 • People over 65 years of age
 • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
 • People with heart disease or diabetes
 • People who work or are active outdoors

Adventure Travel: Visit the CDC website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

Tuberculosis: Tuberculosis is an increasingly serious health concern in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For further information, please  consult the CDC's information on TB .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety :

 • Many roads are poorly maintained and are sometimes blocked because of landslides, public gatherings, and traffic accidents.
 • Two-lane roads between cities are often narrow, lack guardrails, and curvy.
 • Winter driving can be hazardous because of fog, snow, and ice.
 • Be alert for drunk drivers, drivers traveling at excessive speeds, heavy vehicles, and agricultural equipment. Street lights are uncommon outside of cities.
 • See the Department of State’s road safety page for more information.

Visit the websites of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national tourist office and the local automobile association (in Bosnian) road safety information.

The emergency number for vehicle assistance and towing service is 1282 in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and 1285 in the Republika Srpska.

Traffic Laws :

 • Seat belt use is mandatory.
 • Talking on a cell phone while driving is illegal.
 • The legal blood alcohol limit is .03 percent.
 • BiH law requires a safety vest, spare tire, jack, first aid kit, safety triangle, tow rope, and spare light bulbs in the car at all times.
 • You must have an international driving permit and a U.S. license to drive in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
 • Snow tires are required from November through April.

Public Transportation : Public transportation such as buses, taxis, trams, and trains operate in and between major cities. These operators should be licensed and clearly post fares.

During the winter months, flights at Sarajevo’s airport are frequently delayed or canceled due to heavy fog. Be prepared for last-minute cancellations, schedule changes, lengthy delays, alternate routings, or time-consuming overland transportation.

Aviation Safety Oversight : As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel : BiH has a small port in the town of Neum. Mariners planning travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts , U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and NGA broadcast warnings .

Your Testimonials

We enjoyed our time with Esmer, who is so experienced in the history of Mostar and the places that he brought us around during the day tour. He is so well-verse in the history that even our driver the next day recognised his name and praised Esmer for his extensive knowledge.

Thank you so much for the amazing day! Our guide Esmer did a fantastic job, he was able to answer all our questions, told a lot of very interesting stories and entertained us with a great music playlist in the car, which I am still listening to.

The tour was fantastic! Suitable for myself in my 20s and my older parents. Esmer was very attentive and shared so much information about Bosnia in terms of geography and history. Esmer shared moving stories that taught us a lot.

Disrupting Irregular Migration: Best Practices in Response to Recent Developments in the Aviation Sector

The Departments of State, Homeland Security, and the Treasury are jointly issuing this alert to notify airlines, air charter operators, travel agents, and service providers of the ways in which migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks are exploiting legitimate transportation services to facilitate irregular migration to the United States. This statement conveys the U.S. government’s efforts to promote responsible practices in the industry, prevent and disrupt illicit activity, and enhance compliance with lawful immigration and migration pathways. It follows an important announcement by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and several member airlines of their commitment to strengthen collaboration with governments and international organizations to address irregular migration and to consider commercial measures to minimize illicit travel.

Recent developments in the aviation sector, described below, expose migrants, airlines, air charter operators, travel agents, and service providers to increased safety, economic, reputational, financial, logistical, and legal risks. This statement identifies a number of recommendations that could help industry stakeholders and governments reduce their exposure to risks associated with facilitating irregular migration.

Migrants are increasingly traversing the region using Managua as a disembarkation point to continue the journey northward by overland means. The United States has shared releasable intelligence with the aviation sector highlighting this trend and underscoring the need for greater enforcement of airline policies with respect to flights in and out of Managua. In particular, actions by the Nicaraguan government are of grave concern. President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo have put in place permissive-by-design migration policies that have introduced opportunities for migrant smuggling and trafficking networks to exploit migrants for economic gain and fuel dangerous, irregular travel towards the U.S. southwest border.

There are numerous examples of how ruthless smuggling networks have taken advantage of these routes:

In September 2023, Ofelia Hernandez-Salas was extradited to the United States by Mexico for allegedly conspiring with other smugglers to facilitate the travel of large numbers of migrants into the United States from and through Bangladesh, Yemen, Pakistan, Eritrea, India, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Russia, Egypt, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Hernandez-Salas took advantage of commercial routes and charter flights to facilitate the movement of individuals to the U.S. southwest border.

In December 2023, French authorities thwarted an attempt by an organization to move individuals from India, through France, into Nicaragua for further transportation and smuggling arrangements to the U.S. southwest border. More recently, in May 2024, authorities in Jamaica refused entry to a charter flight of irregular migrants that were seeking to travel to the U.S. southwest border.

In May 2024, an Egyptian court initiated the trial of 16 individuals accused of smuggling migrants to the United States. The individuals face criminal charges related to organized crime and human smuggling. According to the charges, the group arranged air transportation of migrants and placed the migrants in dangerous, degrading, and inhuman circumstances throughout the smuggling process.

Recommended Industry Actions

The following are recommended best practices, subject to applicable laws and regulations and, as appropriate according to their risk, based on: (i) their role; (ii) the information available to them; and (iii) the types of transactions in which they engage:

Recommendation 1: Monitor high-risk routes. Proactive measures to identify flight segments/routes known to be used by migrants and migrant smuggling or human trafficking networks can prevent the exploitation of those routes. The United States is closely tracking this issue and can provide relevant information to support airline efforts. IATA and several airlines already have announced voluntary steps industry can take in support of this effort.

Recommendation 2: Report companies that trigger concerns. Industry participants can report concerning activity, including information about travel agencies known or suspected to be engaging in activities supporting irregular migration and migrant smuggling or human trafficking networks to their U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) liaisons, relevant law enforcement and civil aviation authorities, and IATA. As appropriate, carriers may take proactive administrative actions, such as by restricting the ability of agencies known or suspected to be supporting irregular migration to conduct financial transactions with airlines for the purpose of making reservations and ticketing.

Recommendation 3: Undertake appropriate due diligence. Airlines can reduce risk by carrying out appropriate due diligence to protect against the exploitation of services. Conducting increased diligence when dealing with intermediary companies (e.g., travel agents or brokers) that conceal their ownership or otherwise engage in unusually opaque practices. Doing so can help mitigate deceptive practices that create risk.

Recommendation 4: Transmit Advance Passenger Information (API). All airlines should comply with government regulations requiring the transmission of accurate and timely Advance Passenger Information (API) prior to departure, beginning at 24 hours prior to scheduled takeoff to enable proper record checks and offload recommendations.

Actions the United States will Continue to Take to Halt Irregular Migration and the Exploitation of Migrant Populations:

Action 1: Government-to-Government Training and Information Sharing: The U.S. Government will work with governments to identify travel patterns and routes of concern and share indicators and best practices for addressing irregular migration.

Action 2: Industry Training: The U.S. Government will share information with and train airlines to help them detect migrant smuggling and human trafficking cases, signs of irregular migration, fraudulent documents, and imposters. Enhancing foreign partner passenger analysis units and helping them fully leverage Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) transmission will aid in illuminating emerging trends, targeting malafide passengers, and identifying migration facilitators.

Action 3: Visa Restrictions: Under Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) Section 212(a)(3)(C), the Secretary of State has recently announced a visa restriction policy that targets owners, executives, and senior officials of companies providing transportation by land, sea, or charter air designed for use primarily by persons intending to migrate irregularly to the United States.

The State Department has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on several individuals and their family members for knowingly facilitating the travel of irregular migrants to the U.S. southwest border.

Action 4: Sanctioning transnational criminal organizations: The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) will continue to impose sanctions on transnational criminal organizations, including migrant smuggling organizations, their facilitators, and their support networks, pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13581, as amended by E. O. 13863. OFAC is also prepared to use, as appropriate, other sanctions authorities to target human smuggling activity, including its Global Magnitsky authorities under E.O. 13818 that target persons involved in corruption or serious human rights abuses related to human smuggling and other irregular migration.

Sanctions actions apply broadly and carry serious consequences. OFAC’s regulations generally prohibit all transactions by U.S. persons with or within the United States involving the property or interests in property of any individual or entity that is sanctioned. All U.S. persons must comply with OFAC’s prohibitions—including all U.S. citizens and permanent resident aliens whether in the United States or abroad, all persons within the United States, and all U.S.-incorporated entities and their foreign branches. Violations of OFAC regulations could trigger civil or criminal penalties. Moreover, OFAC may impose civil penalties for sanctions violations based on strict liability, meaning that a person subject to U.S. jurisdiction may be held civilly liable even if that person did not know or have reason to know that it was engaging in a transaction that was prohibited under sanctions laws and regulations administered by OFAC.

Action 5: Investigate and prosecute migrant smuggling and human trafficking: The U.S. government will continue to investigate and prosecute migrant smuggling and human trafficking cases through collaboration with foreign governments and the aviation industry and pursue criminal charges against migrant smugglers and human traffickers, and their co-conspirators.

Is travel insurance refundable here’s everything you need to know.

Sometimes, travel insurance is refundable. Here's when you can get your money back.

Peter Hoagland always checks to see if his travel insurance is refundable. That's because anything can happen between the time you book your vacation and when you leave — and because travel insurance isn't always refundable.

During the pandemic, he discovered that the hard way. He had to cancel a trip and asked for his money back from the insurance company. It refused.

"Since then, I always read the fine print on the policy," he says.

The refundability of travel insurance has always been an open question. Some countries and U.S. states regulate refundability. Travel insurance companies put refundability details in the fine print of the policy. And, as Hoagland found out, there are always exceptions.

Like the pandemic, when refund policies were all over the map. Some insurance companies adhered to their published policies. Others offered a credit that could be reused within a year, which was minimally useful because the pandemic was still happening a year later. Others quietly gave their customers a refund.

Hoagland says he fought for his money. Eventually, he contacted a manager at his travel insurance company.

"That produced a quick result," he says. "I got my money back."

Biden Trump Debates What To Know As CNN Reveals Moderators For Next Month s Faceoff

When does bridgerton season 3 part 2 come out on netflix see the release schedule, a storm of 3,000 ukrainian bomblets blew up four russian jets at their base in crimea.

But let's face it: Getting a refund for travel insurance can be difficult. There are times when insurance is always refundable because it's required by law. There are times when it's sometimes refundable. And there are times when it's almost never refundable. But even then, there may be a way to recover some — or all — of the value of your policy.

Getting a refund for travel insurance can be a challenge

If you have a travel insurance policy and would like to get a refund, it might be easier said than done, say experts.

"While travel insurance is regulated like auto and home insurance, it’s often less standardized," says Stuart Winchester, CEO of Marble, a digital wallet for your insurance. "So first off, it’s important to check the fine print of your specific policy. Don’t assume it’s like the last one you got."

Even when you have something in writing, a refund can require some serious negotiating skills.

"Getting a refund for travel insurance can be complicated and frustrating," says Peter Hamdy, the managing director of a tour operator in Auckland, New Zealand. He's asked for a refund on policies numerous times and says that despite what travel insurance companies may tell you, there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to getting a refund on your policy.

"Some situations can warrant a refund," he says. "It depends on your policy."

What does a typical refundability clause look like? For example, the World Explorer Guardian from Insured Nomads notes that it's refundable only during the 10-day review period from the date of delivery or 15 days from the date of delivery if mailed, provided you have not already departed on your trip and you have not incurred any claimable losses during that time. If you depart on your trip before the expiration of the review period, the review period ends and the policy can't be refunded.

"We go a bit further with our World Explorer Travel Medical plans," notes Andrew Jernigan, CEO of Insured Nomads. "If no claims have been filed then we can refund the unused portion of the policy if you cut your trip short.”

When can you get a refund for travel insurance?

Here are the most common cases where travel insurance can be refunded:

 • If you cancel during the "free look" period required by the government. Most states require what's called a "free look" period of anywhere from 10 to 14 days. "During this period, travelers can review the purchase and make sure it fits their needs," explains James Nuttall, general manager of Insubuy . "If it does not, they can cancel it for any reason and get a full refund, no questions asked, so long as you haven’t departed yet.
 • If you cancel during the travel insurance company grace period. Many insurance companies also have a grace period for refunds (usually, they are the same as the "free look" although some grace periods can be longer). "If you’re outside your grace period, which typically lasts one to two weeks after signing, you’re contractually obliged to pay your premiums," says David Ciccarelli, CEO of the vacation rental site Lake . "Still, it doesn’t hurt to ask your company for a refund or alternative options if you’re outside your grace window. You might not get a yes, but it could lead to some cost savings or better solutions."
 • When someone else cancels your trip. "For instance, if your cruise is canceled due to low river tide, you are not at fault and would typically receive a full refund or credit for a future sailing, thus eliminating the need for the travel insurance policy," explains Rhonda Abedsalam vice president of travel insurance for AXA Assistance US.
 • If you die. Typically, the policy would be refunded to your next of kin. Generally, you can also ask for a refund if your travel companion dies before your trip.

Remember, it depends on where you buy your insurance

The refundability of your insurance can depend on where you purchased it. Commercial policies bought from a cruise or tour company are generally canceled and refunded if you cancel the trip far enough in advance of your departure date.

"The travel insurance cancellation provisions are generally tied to the cancellation provisions for the cruise or tour," explains Dan Skilken, president of TripInsurance.com . "After you have paid the last deposits on the cruise and are close enough to departure that they will not provide a refund on the cruise, they generally will also not provide a refund on the travel insurance. But if you cancel early enough to get all or most of your deposit back, you will also get your travel insurance premium refunded."

If you’ve purchased retail travel insurance from a third-party provider or comparison website, you can often get a refund if you can show receipts proving that you received a full refund of all trip deposits and have not had any cancellation penalties or taken any travel credits when you canceled your trip.

That's because retail travel insurance is sold for a specific traveler and for a specific trip. If you have proof of a complete refund and have not received travel credits, then you no longer have what's called an "insurable interest" in the trip. The insurance company must cancel and refund your premium in full, says Skilken.

Insider tip: If the insurance company refuses, just tell them you have proof that you no longer have an insurable interest in the trip. You have to have an insurable interest in a trip to own a travel insurance policy.

Your agent may be able to help you get a refund

You may also be able to lean on the agent who sold you the policy. For example, all policies on Squaremouth come with a money-back guarantee.

"The purpose of this benefit is to give travelers extra time to review their policy documentation to be sure it’s the best policy for their coverage needs," says spokeswoman Jenna Hummer. At Squaremouth, the money-back period typically lasts between 10 and 14 days, which is in line with the mandated "free look" period.

However, I have also seen agents negotiate with travel insurance companies for a more generous refund period in case of extenuating circumstances. There's no guarantee that you'll get it, but it's worth asking — and one reason to work with a third party.

Agents can also help you avoid this problem. Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency, notes that American Airlines Vacation Packages offers a predeparture protection insurance plan, which allows cancellation for any reason before the outbound departing flight time. Other restrictions apply, she adds.

"More flexibility will often cost you more," she says. "But having the flexibility is a great way to sleep well at night."

Can't get a refund? Look for other kinds of flexibility from your travel insurance company

Even if your travel insurance company says no to a refund, it doesn't necessarily mean you've lost the value of your policy.

"If a travel supplier changes or cancels your trip, you should be able to change your travel insurance policy to match the new dates of your trip or even cover a new trip, sometimes up to two years into the future," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA .

Pro tip: Be sure to change the dates of your travel insurance policy before the departure date of your current itinerary. You can do that online or by calling your agent. Once the policy's effective date has passed, making any changes or initiating a refund or credit becomes much more difficult.

Don't forget to do your due diligence

Bottom line: Travel insurance is refundable under certain circumstances. But knowing when can require research.

"It's important for consumers to carefully read their policy upon receipt to understand the specific terms offered by their insurance provider," says Robert Gallagher, president of the US Travel Insurance Association.

The more you know, the likelier you are to get the refund you want when your plans change.

Body found in Grand Canyon after man, dog disappeared on homemade raft last month

bosnian travel agency in usa

A body located in Arizona waters at the Grand Canyon last week appears to belong to a person who disappeared as he traveled down the Colorado River with his dog on a wooden raft, the National Park Service is reporting.

Thomas L. Robison, 58, of Santa Fe, New Mexico vanished April 21 on the reported excursion, according to the NPS, which released an update on Monday.

NPS personnel were notified on Friday of a body in the river near mile six, the agency announced. Responding rangers recovered the body and transported it to Lees Ferry , a boat launch point at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, then to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.

"Initial information indicates the body is that of missing person Thomas L. Robison," the agency wrote in its statement.

Robison was reported missing last month . His vehicle, officials said, was found abandoned at Lees Ferry.

Autopsy to determine man's cause of death

The county medical examiner was working to officially identity the victim and determine their cause and manner of death, authorities said.

The case remained under investigation on Wednesday by NPS and local authorities.
