The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1970 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

Eagles In Denver, 1976: A Family Affair at Mile High Stadium
On August 8th, 1976, Randy’s wife and children, his parents, and numerous other relatives and friends traveled three hours from Scottsbluff to Denver to see the Eagles perform at Mile High Stadium. The concert took place on the heels of Randy’s monster hit with the band, “Take It To The Limit.” His hometown paper, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald , covered the concert and interviewed Randy’s parents, Herman and Emilie Meisner, as well as his first wife, Jennifer Meisner.
The Eagles were the headliners at the third installment of the “Colorado Sun Day.” Also on the bill were Linda Ronstadt & Pure Prairie League. The Denver concert was the Eagles’ last tour date of the summer.

For the show, Randy wore a Cawley’s Potato Chips shirt. Cawley’s chips were manufactured in his hometown of Scottsbluff, Nebraska
The shirt said: “This is my bag. What’s Yours?” (the latter part is hidden on the bottom right of the shirt). Jennifer remembered that “we always bought a bunch to take to L.A. They were the best chips.”
S cottsbluff Star-Herald/Western Sky cover story August 21, 1976
The Mile High piece was part of “Western Sky,” a weekend insert in the Scottsbluff Star-Herald . The article featured interviews with Randy’s parents Herman and Emilie Meisner, who talk about their son’s rise to fame and their fear at his entering the music business: “We were a little leerie for a while.” There’s also a great moment where Joe Walsh hands Herman a beer. Randy’s wife, Jennifer, was also interviewed. She described what it was like being on tour with the Eagles the previous two weeks, including having to jump a fence with Randy to escape a crowd in Foxboro, MA. She also provided some insight into his personality, as well as his plans for the future, including perhaps the first mention of Randy’s desire to do a solo album. I have provided an overview of the spread in the photos below, however part of the text is not shown. Skip further down to read the full article.

The “overwhelming ovation” for “Take It To The Limit,” was “largely the product of Randy’s writing and soul-touching vocal work.” (Kevin Doll, Scottsbluff Star-Herald )
After a two-month break, the Eagles returned to the road on October 14th, 1976 in San Diego. See a full list of their 1976 tour dates in my Concert Archive here .

Oh my Jessica & Jennifer, this article is so awesome with all the behind the scenes insights from the one who was there living it. I really loved reading all of it! And the pictures are outstanding. Thank You for Sharing!!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for reading. I had a lot of help with this one!
What a great article, Jessica! I’m so glad you have a relationship with family and they trust you to share what I would call family heirlooms.
Thanks, Janis. Jennifer has been very generous with not only her memorabilia, of which she has A LOT, but also her memories. She was a witness to a great deal more of Randy’s career than people realize and has provided me with an immense insight into who he was off stage. I am extremely grateful for not only her friendship, but also her support of my site.
THANK YOU so much to Jennifer for sharing this information! I have loved Randy’s music since he joined the Eagles and I have all his solo albums! What a great person he was and we share your loss. I think it’s wonderful that Don Felder is honoring Randy at his concerts now with his picture on the backdrop while his band member sings Randy’s song. What a great way to honor Randy to Don’t fans!
Wow! Awesome work Jessica. I love the personal glimpse into Randy’s life. Thanks to Jennifer for sharing here. Speaks volumes for your site and integrity. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Jennifer and Jessica. I appreciate you Jennifer sharing your personal life with Randy. Everyone says he was a wonderful person with a voice of an Angel. I love hearing him sing and was so sorry to hear of his passing but pray he is now at peace.

Flashback: The Eagles Play an Epic ‘Hotel California’ in 1977
By Andy Greene
Andy Greene
After doing a test run in Las Vegas late last month, the Eagles have announced plans to perform their landmark 1976 LP Hotel California on tour next year. The shows start in Atlanta on February 7th and last through April 18th at the Forum in Inglewood, California, but it’s quite possible they’ll add more dates before it ends.
If they stick to the Las Vegas version of the show, expect them to open with the entire LP straight through before taking a short break and then kicking into a long set of other hits like “Take It Easy,” “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “Take It to the Limit,” along with a handful of solo tunes like Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good” and Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer.”
The Eagles have sold more albums than just about any act in the history of the record industry, but Hotel California remains their most popular LP. (Technically, however, they have sold more copies of their Greatest Hits record.) The title track began with an instrumental demo that guitarist Don Felder recorded onto a cassette tape.
“It was a simple demo — a progression of arpeggiated guitar chords, along with some hornlike sustained note lines, all over a simple 4/4 drum-machine pattern,” Henley told Rolling Stone in 2016. “There may have been some Latin-style percussion in there, too. I think I was driving down Benedict Canyon Drive at night, or maybe even North Crescent Drive (adjacent to the Beverly Hills Hotel) the first time I heard the piece, and I remember thinking, ‘This has potential; I think we can make something interesting out of this.’”
Henley wrote most of the lyrics himself. “I feel it important to point out that Glenn contributed some very important lines to that set of lyrics,” he said in 2016. “Those lyrics employ what Glenn used to call ‘the perfect ambiguity,’ and are open to a wide array of interpretations — and we’ve seen some doozies. But the song has somehow resonated all around the globe.”
Here’s video of the band performing “Hotel California” at the Capitol Centre in Washington, D.C., on March 21st, 1977, three months after the album hit. The group playing it onstage next year, however, is going to look quite different than this one. Bassist Randy Meisner quit the band just six months after this show, Don Felder was let go in 2001 after a business dispute and Glenn Frey died in 2016. Don Henley and Joe Walsh are the sole remaining members that played on Hotel California , though bassist Timothy B. Schmit has been in the band since late 1977.
Don Henley initially said the Eagles would retire after Glenn Frey died. “It would just seem like greed or something,” he said. “It would seem like a desperate thing.” He changed his mind when Glenn’s son Deacon practiced with the band and seamlessly fit into the mix. They began playing shows with Deacon and Vince Gill covering Glenn’s vocal parts in 2017 and gigged all over the world this past year.

UPDATE (Oct. 25): This article has been updated to include six new dates added between Jan. 19 and March 13, 2024.
After more than half a century of crisscrossing the globe to spread the warm smell of colitas, the Eagles have announced the dates for their final tour . Dubbed “The Long Goodbye,” the trek will feature fellow Rock and Roll Hall of famers Steely Dan opening up the shows, which are slated to kick off Sept. 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” read a statement from the group. “Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful.”

“Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle,” the band continued in its announcement, noting that the farewell run is still in the planning stages, with more dates to be announced at a later time. “We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round… The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”
For the six new dates added between Jan. 19 and March 13 next year, pre-sale starts on Wednesday, Nov. 1, and general on-sale is Friday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. local time.
