How to Travel Pittsburgh to New York – Megabus, Amtrak, More

Are you looking to travel from Pittsburgh to New York? Well, you're in luck- there are actually a number of options available beyond just flying.

Whether you're looking to take Megabus, Amtrak, drive, or even fly, there are a number of travel options for you!

As we've taken more or less every transportation option in our travels from Pittsburgh to NYC, we wanted to break down the options in detail in this one.

Pittsburgh Megabus to New York City

Pittsburgh Megabus to New York City

Megabus offers several buses from Pittsburgh to NYC, departing throughout the day starting at about 9am and departing at noon, 3pm, and 11pm for an overnight ride (a similar schedule is true in reverse) and arrives to New York in about 8 1/2 hours if there is no traffic.

Megabus is known for fares as low as $1, and while those go quickly I was able to get a one way ticket with a reserved seat for $11 plus fees ($2.75) about a month before my early 2019 trip. $13.75 for a one-way on Megabus, Pittsburgh to NYC is hard to beat if you ask me, but it is worth noting that last minute rates have exceeded $50 one way in our research as well.

The pickup spot is conveniently located in downtown Pittsburgh near the convention center at Penn and 10th (although may be within a block pending if a conference is going on), and included a 30 minute stop in State College. The bus typically drops off at 7th in 28th in New York, just a block from the 1 subway line and a few blocks from Penn Station.

Inside Megabus

While Megabus has a bit of a reputation behind it for delays, broken internet, power outlets down, etc., at the start of our trip we left more or less on time and both the seat power and wifi was operational (perks of a Pittsburgh departure, perhaps?).

However, about an hour into the ride the internet connection wasn't good enough to play movies from the Megabus app the times I tried. (Likewise, the toilet gets exceptionally gross by the end, so plan your breaks accordingly.)

As the route travels route 22 and I-80, I can't speak of many great views other than the occassional vista when going through the hills. Otherwise for the most part the view includes passing by smaller towns and boroughs more than nature.

As a bonus, however, I was quite lucky in that we arrived in New York City exactly on time (to the minute)- something that is almost unheard of with bus travel.

Reserved seating was not entirely necessary for those traveling solo, but is more a good idea if you want to sit at the front of the bus, at a table on the first level, or be together with a group. The last couple that boarded had to split up as there were no general admission seats together (these are first come first served).

Overall, Megabus isn't the most comfortable travel experience, but if you're looking for cheap and easy travel option and can deal with the somewhat cramped space and time, Megabus is for you.

Pittsburgh Amtrak to New York City

Pittsburgh Amtrak to New York City

The train from Pittsburgh to NYC is another great option, and is one I did on return from New York on the aptly named Pennsylvanian train. Other lines exist that will get you to New York but require a transfer, so we are excluding those from this guide at this time.

The Pennsylvanian from Pittsburgh to New York departs downtown Pittsburgh at about 7:30am and arrives at Penn Station just before 5pm. On the return the train departs New York at 10:50 and arrives in Pittsburgh just before 8pm. This is ultimately a 9 hr and 20 minute ride, about an hour longer than an on-time Megabus, and is mostly due to the fact that the train route between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh is quite slow (you are at the mercy of the speed of the cargo train in front of you).

Inside Amtrak Business Class

In early 2019 a one-way ticket on Amtrak for this route was about $60 for a regular coach seat and about $100 for a business class seat when booked a month in advance (I purchased business class), and closer to day of departure increased to about $80/$120 for the two classes respectively.

As I splurged for business class on a recent trip the synopsis may be a bit biased, but the comfort of the seats and ample leg room more than made up for the price difference and increased trip duration to me. Throw in working wifi*, a dining car, the ability to walk around, and great views and I would say that Amtrak is our preferred method to travel from Pittsburgh to New York when we have the time.

*We've read reports that wifi works mostly only in business class and the dining car, so if you are planning on working / requiring wifi then the upgrade to business class may make more sense. If you can do without, the upgrade may not be as necessary.

Drive from Pittsburgh to New York

Driving to New York City is simply not recommended in our opinion. The fastest route is over six hours of driving without stops which is equivalent to $35-$50 in PA turnpike tolls (whether you have an EZ Pass or not), $45 or so in gas, plus additional tolls and parking fees when arriving in NYC based on where you are staying (and that is just one way).

Personally, unless you are driving with a long group or are on a road trip apart of a larger journey, we think the cost greatly outweighs the convenience when Amtrak and Megabus are more economical options. And as an added bonus you won't have to drive in NYC, which no one does because there are too many cars on the road.

Fly from Pittsburgh to New York

Many flights exist to travel between Pittsburgh and New York City, both direct and with layovers, and to JFK, LaGuardia, and other further out airports that require more creative transit to get into the city.

Depending on when you book we've seen direct prices to LaGuardia for under $200 round trip (about the same as business class on Amtrak booked early enough) and last minute tickets pushing $500.

Flights themselves are a brief 90 minutes, but when you factor in getting to the airport early, picking up luggage, traveling to and from the airports, delays (there are almost always delays in the New York Airports), you are looking at several hours- still the fastest option available beyond private chartered flights.

That being said, New York airports are some of the worst for flight delays, and virtually every time we've traveled through these airports our return flight home has been delayed anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. As such, we try to avoid flying through any New York airport if we can.

Thank you for this information. Very helpful!

I may be taking this trip in the next few months, the cost of the mega bus is a leading option right now for me.

I just drove to NYC and back.. I’ll never do that again. I didn’t mind driving in the city.. it was the 7 hours behind the wheel that bothered me. My butt hurt so bad by hour 5.. then I got stuck in New Jersey construction traffic. My car started sounding like a plane taking off halfway there so now I have to have my engine looked at.. I’ll also never ever complain about cars on the Fort Pitt Bridge again after dealing with the drivers getting onto the George Washington Bridge from Jersey!

I want to try the train to New York but the 9-10 hour trip sounds daunting. Will I feel trapped on there after a few hours? We’ll see!

It is a pretty rough trip so I’d recommend bringing movies on your computer or a book!

Just drive I-80, only toll is entering Manhattan ($15 without EZ pass), $10 with, and $1 only on return trip at the NJ border. Trip takes 6.5hrs or less with one bathroom break. Parking in a garage can be booked ahead of time (ParkWhiz app) and is very reasonable. Have paid as little as $43 for 72hours in covered/valet parking in Manhattan.

I just discovered your blog. Thank you for the options. I’m from New York City, don’t drive, and would like to visit Pittsburgh one day..but the airfare is so ridiculously expensive for just a 90 minute trip. I wonder why. 😕 The overnight bus seems a viable option, but I would be nervous to travel that late at night by myself among strangers. And Amtrak seems more comfortable, but you have to waste a whole day and the cost is comparable to airfare if you want leg room. It’s too bad that Pittsburgh wasn’t as easy and cheap to travel to as Florida is. I hope one day to visit, though. Thank you. xx

Agree with you 100% there! It is unfortunate but direct flights to hub cities seem insanely expensive.

I have both driven to NYC and also have used the train on a different occasion. Since bus is out due to the time factor, the train most certainly can only be used if you are retired and are not a slave to time. Train time can only be classified as “brutal.” As in the one post, our drive was only 6.5 hours. Parking was inexpensive. So choose wisely, your mental health may depend on it…

Having tried many of the options my most preferred is a hybrid approach. Drive to Harrisburg, park for $5 a day, train in comfort to midtown Manhattan in a little over 3 hours. Lots of departures from Harrisburg, no stress getting into Manhattan and parking there. Possible on 7 hours point to point if u time ur connection properly.

Quick Guide to New York City

Ah, the city the never sleeps.

NYC is as versatile a city as they come. It can be quiet if you visit one of its many parks, busy if you find yourself in Times Square, a gastronomical delight if you dine in one of its many restaurants, an artist?s paradise in any of its museums. It has hiking trails, zoos, observational decks, large green spaces, and of course, a beautiful skyline. You could go up the Empire State Building, visit the Statue of Liberty, spend the day at Central Park, watch a musical on Broadway, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, hang out at the MoMA, or pick from a variety of things the city has on offer.

Walking the streets of NYC, you feel like a true star - whether it's a performance at Radio City, or a brand new musical near Times Square, NYC is something you can't replicate anywhere else in the world. When you arrive, there's a wide array of hotels and restaurants to satisfy your needs, which will make you feel like you never want to leave.

Points of Interest

  • Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn. Home to the impressive Brooklyn Philharmonic, BAM is one of the best places in the country to attend cutting-edge new musical and dance performances. The Next Wave Festival every autumn is a much-anticipated event of the New York performance scene.
  • New York Philharmonic  at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, 155 W 65th St (at Broadway). One of the premier orchestras in the United States, playing a wide variety of concerts (more than 100) every year to sold-out crowds, the Philharmonic is well-known for its standard-setting performances of the classical canon. The season runs from September to June, and in the summer they play free concerts in parks around the city
  • MoMA  11 West 53rd Street. In addition to being the crown jewel of modern art museums, MoMA puts on a terrific repertory program in a nicely renovated theater below the museum. And compared to other New York movie theaters, tickets to films at MoMA are a steal.
  • The New York Bagel . There is no bagel like the New York Bagel anywhere else in the world. Bagels, which are a doughnut-shaped round of boiled dough with a distinctive, chewy, sweet interior and a leathery outer crust, arrived from the old world with Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and have become utterly New York in character. You can get bagels anywhere in the city but, for the best bagels you may have to trek away from the main tourist sites. Many bagel connoisseurs consider  Absolute Bagels  at Broadway and 107th street to be the most traditional and best. Ess-a-Bagel on 21st and 1st Av. and 3rd Av. between 51st and 52nd Sts. also has a strong following. Many of the better bagel bakeries can be found in Brooklyn: one good spot is the Bagel Hole (7th Avenue of the F or G) or try looking in Midwood (Avenue J on the Q subway line). For the best bagels, go early when they are warm and straight from the oven.

I enjoyed the Journey. The driver was also nice. But the time to start journey was delayed by 1 hour 45 minutes which is not a joke.

Always loved riding Greyhound since childhood. But in this day and age with people still getting sick from Covid I'd seek another form of Transportation until this thing has been completely eradicated.

Horrible. My layover had me and two small vhildren stranded overnight in a station in Baltimore fpr over 6 hours. They were all very rude including the driver

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Five Boro Bike Tour is Sunday in NYC. See the map and list of street closures.

By Mark Prussin

Updated on: May 4, 2024 / 4:10 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- The Five Boro Bike Tour returns to New York City this weekend, which means street, bridge and tunnel closures citywide.

Use this guide to plan ahead if you'll be on the road.

What time does the Five Boro Bike Tour start?

The Five Boro Bike Tour map shows the route of the 40-mile event, which starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5 in Manhattan.

untitled-design.png

Here are the bridge and tunnel closures announced by the MTA:

Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

The Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will be closed from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the MTA. The upper level will remain open in both directions, but drivers heading to Staten Island must use the Belt Parkway.

Other closures include:

  • One Brooklyn-bound lane on the lower level from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Bay Street exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The 92nd Street entrance ramp to the Staten Island-bound lower level from approximately 12:01 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Belt Parkway entrance ramp to the Staten Island-bound lower level from approximately 12:01 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Lily Pond Avenue exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Robert F. Kennedy Bridge

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge exit ramp to the southbound FDR Drive will be closed from approximately 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. All southbound traffic must exit via the 2nd Avenue-East 125th Street ramp.

Hugh Carey Tunnel

The approach from the Hugh Carey Tunnel to the westbound Gowanus/BQE will be closed from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to this off-property closure, all traffic exiting the tunnel in Brooklyn will be diverted to Hamilton Avenue during this time, and the Trinity Place exit in Manhattan will also be closed from approximately 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here's the full list of streets that will be closed at NYPD's discretion during the bike tour:
