Since the due date is only an estimated time, you should pack your bag before. There is no ideal time for that, but your partner may go into labor sooner than expected. We suggest you prepare your bag around 36 or 37 weeks pregnant.

Yes, you can. While duffle bags are preferable, a suitcase is not too much. Besides, it’s always better to be well-prepared for these types of situations.

When planning a stay in the hospital , whether it is for surgery, childbirth, or an inpatient procedure, it is important to be prepared.

This involves packing everything you need not only to be comfortable, but to make up for some common shortcomings of the hospital (such as food or the lack of privacy).

While modern hospitals are designed to be more people-friendly than ever, function, hygiene , and durability are more important than comfort.

This article will help you think through what you may need to take with you so you're not stuck doing without during your hospital stay.

As you prepare for your stay, think about all of the things you'd take on a weekend trip. Then cut down. Especially omit valuables like jewelry or electronics.

Hospitals won't take responsibility if personal belongings are stolen. It's ultimately your call as to whether you're willing to risk it or take out a short-term insurance policy to cover the loss.

If you really must bring electronics, such as a laptop, ask the hospital in advance if they offer lockable storage in the rooms. If they do, check to see if your belongings will fit inside.

If you're uncertain whether to bring a valuable, ask yourself if you're willing to lose it. If not, keep it at home.

Once you've cut back to the basics, decide which things would:

• Help you sleep comfortably
• Maintain your daily hygiene
• Help with privacy
• Keep you healthy

You should also bring entertainment and, if your treatment or procedure allows, maybe some snacks or drinks.

You won't have a lot of space to store things. Try to fit everything you need into a standard carry-on bag. Be sure it's well-labeled and lockable for security reasons.

The clothing you may want to take includes:

• Comfortable pajamas (loose-fitting is best)
• A light robe for modesty, especially in a shared room
• An eye mask for sleeping, as the room may not be very dark
• Eyeglasses, which may be simpler to deal with than contact lenses
• Plenty of socks and underwear
• Slippers with rubber soles (to prevent slipping)
• An outfit to wear home (something loose that won’t rub on your incision if possible)

Personal care products to take are:

• A hairbrush or comb
• A list of your current medications, including names, dosages, and dosing schedule
• Personal medications, preferably in their original container so the nurse can help you with them
• Soap, skin-care products, and hair care products if you prefer your own (ideally travel size)
• Products like tampons, sanitary pads, or panty liners
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, denture cream, and deodorant
• Earplugs if you're ​a light sleeper
• Your pillow(s)

Electronic and entertainment items may include:

• Cellphone and charger
• Earbuds or headphones for your phone or computer
• Books, e-reader, tablet, portable DVD player, puzzles, magazines
• A laptop and charger

Important documents to bring include:

• A list of your medications
• Your government-issued ID
• Your health insurance card
• A copy of your healthcare proxy, if you have one

You may wonder if you can bring non-perishable snacks and drinks, especially if you have dietary needs with a condition like diabetes or need to take medicine with food. Remember to check with your healthcare team before eating any food brought from home to ensure it won't interfere with your care.

Having a Baby? Don't Forget These

When you're delivering a baby, you need to think about an additional list of things. For labor and delivery, you may need:

• A birth plan, if you have one
• A camera, extra batteries, and plenty of storage devices
• Any music that you've selected for labor and delivery

For your stay after delivery, you may want to have:

• Nursing pajamas
• Nursing bra
• Breast pads

For taking your baby home, you'll need:

• A fully equipped diaper bag
• Baby’s going-home outfit

Hospitals will not allow you to take a newborn home without an appropriate car seat. Be sure yours is properly installed before you go into labor.

Remember that after giving birth, it takes a while for your uterus to shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size, so your clothes for going home should be comfortable maternity clothes.

Before you check into the hospital, make sure you've packed everything you'll need and want for your stay. Leave valuables at home. Consider what you'll want to wear, personal hygiene items you'll need, things to ensure your comfort, and how you'll entertain yourself.

Preparing for the arrival of a baby is an exciting part of the parenting journey, filled with anticipation. Choosing what to pack in your hospital bag is a crucial step in ensuring a smooth transition as you grow your family. In this guide, we'll explore expert-recommended items that expecting parents should consider packing, including items for birth moms, her partner and for baby.

“For postpartum needs, the hospital usually supplies what you need to care for yourself and the baby,” says Dr. Lisa N. Jackson , M.D. of Mt. Sinai Hospital and Uptown OBGYN of New York . She says you will want to pack “comfortable PJs, clothes to lounge in when visitors come to see your new bundle of joy and something to wear home. Pick clothing with some stretch, as you will still feel five or more months pregnant when you leave, and you want fabric that will be comfortable.”

“An expecting mother should pack her bag around 37 weeks,” says Jackson. “She is full term at this point, and even though most babies usually come within a few days of their due date, 37 weeks is a real possibility.”

While you may not need to actually pack until closer to 37 weeks, it can be helpful to start shopping ahead of time. “Having essentials on hand well before the delivery of the baby can be helpful in easing stress and making the parents feel more prepared,” says Molly Plaza, Certified Maternal-Newborn Nurse of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver . “I would have the majority of your items bought by 34 weeks of pregnancy as all babies have their own timetable for when they want to be born. Having things purchased and organized for easy access can make the transition from hospital to home after the birth more smooth as well.”

According to the CDC, 90% of babies are born between 37 and 41 weeks gestation . So for most people, packing your hospital bag by 36 to 37 weeks of pregnancy should give you enough time.

If you have specific medical conditions such as high blood pressure, are carrying multiple babies, are at risk for preterm labor or have a scheduled C-section, your healthcare provider might recommend packing your bag a bit earlier, just to be safe. “If an expecting mother has any medical issues that could cause an earlier delivery, her doctor will warn her, and she should pack her bag at that time,” says Jackson.

Ultimately, the goal is to be prepared but also to stay flexible. We can’t always control what happens, and babies have a way of keeping us on our toes.

Pregnancy Hospital Bag Checklist: What To Pack For Mom

“When packing your bag for the hospital, you should consider what you will need while laboring or during your scheduled cesarean section, and what you will need after you deliver,” says Jackson. The checklist below is based on Dr. Jackson’s recommendations, as well as the guidance given in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ book “Your Pregnancy and Childbirth: A Guide to Pregnancy From the Nation's Ob-Gyns .”

• Comfortable clothing: Loose-fitting, comfortable clothes for labor and for after delivery.
• Robe and slippers/socks: Hospitals can be chilly, so pack a cozy robe and warm socks or slippers.
• Nursing bras and nursing pads: If you are planning to breastfeed, nursing bras and pads will be helpful.
• Toiletries: You’ll want to bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, moisturizer, hair brush, hair ties and any other personal hygiene items such as contact lens solution or glasses.
• Comfort items: A favorite pillow, blanket or items for relaxation like essential oils or music.
• Snacks: Labor may be long, so having snacks like energy bars, nuts or fruit can help provide energy during or afterwards (although some hospitals may not allow food during labor).
• Entertainment: Books, magazines, tablets, a portable speaker or other items for entertainment if there’s downtime.
• Birth plan: If you have one, bring copies to share with your healthcare team.
• Medications: Any prescription medications or supplements you're currently taking.
• Phone charger: Keep your phone charged to stay connected with loved ones and for capturing those precious first moments with your baby. An extra long charger can also be handy, because at some hospitals the plug may be some distance from the wall.
• Essential documents: Your insurance card, photo ID and a copy of your hospital registration paperwork.

Dr. Jackson notes that for moms having a schedule C-section, some of these things may not apply. It’s a good idea to check with your doctor.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
