Hotel unavailable when other websites…

Hotel unavailable when other websites have them available... What is $300 credit's worth if you're not able to use them? Also, multi-leg flights were also coming back as unavailable... This website is really good for nothing and Capital One should really consider switching from hopper to other travel portal services.

Beware of cancelation time zone!

I booked a hotel under the understanding that I could cancel by April 30th at 12:00 am. I tried to cancel on April 29th 9:30 PM EST but they wouldn't let me and told me I had to cancel by 12:00 AM UTC. They do not clearly display this on their site. It free cancelations until April 30 in large red print and in small print below that, "Cancellations or changes made after Apr 30 2024 12:00 AM (+00:00) are subject to a fee equal to 100% of the amount paid." Customer support was no help.

Booked a trip that we had to cancel

Booked a trip that we had to cancel. We got a credit of around $1,800 but when we tried to use it to book another flight, Capital One could/would not fully utilize our credit and we either lost $900 of the credit or had to pay an additional $3,000 for the new trip! When booking the new trip on their website, the tickets totaled $1,074 but the website showed $10,000!!! When we called them. they could not explain and only said that something was wrong. The low rating for this site is warranted!!!

Beware of CapitalOne Travel Services…

Beware of CapitalOne Travel Services rude and bad customer service! In a recent trip to Colombia with my family, they left us stranded on the return because of their internal problem. To add insult to injury, they refused to and/or didn’t have the courtesy to cover the expense of having to stay in Colombia until they solved their internal problem. My family and I are extremely disappointed with CapitalOne Travel Services’ handling of our circumstances while in a foreign country.

We got this card to get travel points. What a mistake. We booked a villa and the hotel said we only had a small suite. Capital One travel deals with a third party they don’t deal directly with the hotels or airlines and cannot even call their vendor they can only email them. You will not get any help in a timely manner. Their agents do not speak coherent English which makes it very difficult to communicate and their supervisors also can barely speak English and they will not transfer you to anyone else in the company. We will be cancelling our card.

Average travel portal - much room for further improvement.

Capitalone's travel portal uses a third party to fetch data and it displays results. They appear to be using some filters as well, as the same third-party site has wider options. The issue with their site is that it shows limited options when compared to other leading travel portals and to add to it, the price is mostly not attractive as there are cheaper options available. The agents over the phone I felt lacks in knowledge or they do not have enough data to speak or respond. One thing that I do want to mention is that when connected to the right agent/supervisor, they do listen to the suggestions and implement those. My suggestion was implemented in the search and I could see the requested option in the search result. They would need to improve on the price offered to make it attractive with other travel portals and also need to improve on the search results.

Capitol One Travel site definitely minor league

Consistently find better prices by going directly to the airline or hotel. COT uses Hopper as their back end engine. I found a better price on regular Hopper compared to COT Hopper. I tried to book a hotel room advertised as one of their Prestige Collections. COT site could not complete the transaction. Customer Service was no help and a time waster. I filed a claim in November 2023 for lost luggage reimbursement, but haven't heard anything yet. I haven't lost any money - so far, but I'm really wondering what I'm getting for my $395/ yr. COT really needs to function like a real travel site if they want to hang on to their card holders.

Capital One Travel web site limited infirmation

The Capital One Web Site information about hotel rooms is limited. It is not easy to find out if the bathrooms have bathtubs or not. Calling to find out is time consuming. First you have to enter your credit card number and then after a 50 second wait you are connected to an agent who only has the information on their web site. The agents are generally polite but that never answers detailed questions like “Does the room have a bathtub?”

Booked a hotel room through them

Booked a hotel room through them, and chose the non-refundable option since it was the cheapest option. Found a cheaper room with exact specs on Expedia that was refundable and 30% cheaper. Called them for a price match and my inquiry was handled very rudely by the supervisor who refused to do a price match because my booking with capital one was a non-refundable room. So in short I paid more through the portal and was not taken care of when I called. SO much for their shop with confidence guarantee (part of the FAQ's - how do I know I am getting a fair price at Capital One Travel), absolutely no faith in the portal, their pricing techniques and after all of that, their customer service. Now their credit card business is going to be affected by it, because I am a capital one venture X card member who primarily uses that card for all transactions. That is not going to happen anymore, because I have no trust in doing business with an organization that does not know how to take care of its customers.

We booked a flight and the carrier was…

We booked a flight and the carrier was Flexflight. We never got any confirmation. Finally we were sent an email that the flight was cancelled. We called Capitol One and they were unable to reach the airplane. A month later we decided we needed to just book another flight or we are going to not have a return trip home from our trip. We finally got an answer and it was that no refund could be issued and they would issue us a new ticket. However had already booked the flight due to the lack of communication. Overall, we have decided it was such terrible customer service that we will be closing our account.

The customer support service people are moro$s. Keeps calling me back every day for the same issue that I told them has been resolved. I told the last person I talked to not to call me again regarding this and she got rude and said I was the person who called even though I was calling back after receiving a voicemail call! It appears that the customer service is outsourced overseas ( The Philippines?)

Stay elsewhere…..!

Stayed at the Novotel Living in Singapore (Oct 10-16) & was very disappointed ….never again….. Room was tiny & majority had 10/12 steep steps to climb to enter the room. (Not children/elderly/disabled/wheelchair friendly if U need that)…bring your hiking boots! The 1 coffee machine in the lobby was usually either empty or being cleaned or under maintenance. The ‘cookies’ were same every day for a week & tasted stale. Staff not friendly. Elevator frequency really bad. Only 2. Maids & food delivery people often hold the elevator for ages so U can easily wait 5/10+ mins…mornings worse. I understand that late checkouts are never automatic but was told that “room was required at 3:30pm & I had to checkout no/later than 11am”. Do they need 4 & 1/2 hrs to clean such a tiny room? Location was 5 star - everything else was 1 star so I think 2 star is generous. I would never stay here again…many other better choices in Singapore …. I’m a Worldwide traveler more than 50 years & lived here in Singapore for 5years & return annually so am very familiar with what is the norm - this is not it. Sad that Novotel standards are not upheld at this location.

If issues arise they will hang you out to dry - never use them

They booked the wrong hotel, not even in the same state. Then in their attempt to make it right erroneously told me that there were no vacancies near me (turns out there were) and that the hotel they rebooked us in had high ratings (I specifically asked about the ratings). After accepting the rebooking (mistake), we checked the hotel online to get directions. It had terrible ratings. It was also further away than thought. We checked near where we were and while most everything was indeed booked, we found one with a vacancy on the 2nd phone call. We grabbed it and called CapOne back to cancel their rebooking. They said that it was too late and that we now had to pay for both. When trying to talk it out with them, they simply hid behind legalese and said that since I had accepted the other booking that there was nothing they could do. They couldn't cancel the rebooking and transfer the credit to my new booking. Very disappointing and not really believable. Especially, since its their fault that I'm in this predicament. They did give me a $50 voucher for future use. Right. I'll never use them again.

If I could give it a ZERO

If I could give it a ZERO, I would. WORST experience EVER. My husband booked international flights through Capital and my son's name is his nickname on the ticket and does not match his passport with full name. Capital One aka HOPPER cannot make any changes and no one from Virgin Atlantic will work with them to get it changed. I have been disconnected, promised call-backs, now for 24-hours to no avail. WORST. DO NOT EVER BOOK THROUGH CAPITAL ONE. I will most likely be discontinuing my card service with them after this experience.

No refund yet airline made changes for free

Book the flight with Capital One travel in January had to reschedule due to poor weather. Wouldn't you know the same fair class was unavailable when I rescheduled for March so not only did I pay hundred dollars per passenger in change fees but also another $200 per passenger for the upgraded fair class. Unfortunately my girlfriend fell from a ladder and bruised her ribs so she can't make the march trip. I tried to reschedule it for May and discovered that the original fare was now available so I called them for a refund they refused. I said so you can take my money but you cannot give it back am I understanding you they said yes that's the policy. we exchanged a few more pleasantries and I went to the airline website and without even calling anyone I was able to book the flight at any airfare I choose in with no change fee. I have also seen many instances of blackouts on their website when they say there are no blackout dates or fares. The reason I'm forced to use them is to use up a pile of reward miles I have accumulated when they're gone gone so is Capital One travel

My wife and I paid $60 for the flight…

My wife and I paid $60 for the flight disruption assistance and couldn’t feel more ripped off. Couldn’t get them to help us change flights on a phone call and couldn’t get a refund for the assistance because an agent told us to book it ourselves. Mary the supervisor on the call line was just as unhelpful and couldn’t get us a new flight either. What are we paying for? Poor customer service and $60 dollars ripped off, won’t have anything to do with capital one in the future after this horrible experience and advise you to save yourself and do the same.

Horrible customer service

Booked via Capital one. Unable to get a flight credit for a drop in airfare. Supervisor and customer service rep were highly unhelpful. I called my airline and had I booked direct with them I would have been able to receive a credit for the difference. Don't book through capital one. It is not worth it and their customer service is awful.

this is a lousy travel agency owned by Capital One. i had a hard time changing flights while traveling abroad because I was told I've gotta go thro the maze of Capital One Travel Second, despite being card holders for Capital One when Southwest Lost our luggages on 8/23/23, for months Capital did not respond and instead sent us a litany of impossible to supply documents for our compensation. Nothing yet on 11/15/23!! For us senior citizens in our mid seventies this has been a painful loss. "Whatever is in your wallet" -- Keep it there & please do'nt use Capital One Travel agency. they are totally bogus

what you see is not what you get

booked a hotel for Tokyo, Japan with two beds shown in the room description and text that says "assigned at check-in". When we arrive, there is only one bed and CO-travel said pictures are not actual representations of what you get. I booked a 2nd hotel through their site that clearly says "2Kings", when I arrive, the receptionist says we have never had rooms with 2 beds. Capital one refuses to refund my 1st reservation because the reservation does not say how many beds are in the room.

Capital One Travel Is Sleek But Limited by Content Gaps: Skift Review

Dennis Schaal , Skift

October 28th, 2021 at 11:30 AM EDT

Capital One Travel is a surprisingly nimble online travel site for a portal of this type that's still in beta. That being said, it has some significant content holes.

Dennis Schaal

Capital One Travel , powered by Hopper, is a surprisingly sleek option for cardholders, but it has its limitations, as well.

For Hopper users, consider the U.S.-based credit card company’s recently upgraded travel portal as sort of a Hopper plus. It has, or soon will have, all of the main features that Hopper is known for, including price predictions and price tracking, price drop refunds if an airfare decreases after booking, and a price match guarantee on flight, hotel, and car rental bookings, but only up to 24 hours after booking.

On the drawing board as well, are the options to freeze an airfare while waiting to book, and the ability to cancel a flight for any reasons up to 24 hours before its scheduled departure with flyers recouping “most” of their ticket cost, according to Capital One.

One important element Capital One Travel, which is in beta, adds to the mix beyond what Hopper itself offers in its own app is the portal’s integration with the Capital One rewards program. So Venture, VentureOne, and Spark Miles customers can earn and burn rewards on their travels.

For example, these cardholders can earn five miles per dollar spent on hotel bookings and car rentals made through Capital One Travel.

Once these cardholders earn their miles, they also have the option to transfer their miles to more than a dozen Capital One airline partners to build up their rewards on favored airlines, although this feature isn’t new.

In addition, unlike Hopper, the Capital One travel portal is available on desktop and in the Capital One app, and not just in an app like Hopper.

In an interview, Matt Knise, Capital One vice president of U.S. card, said the company wanted to enhance the user experience of its longstanding travel portal by eliminating the need to open multiple tabs, and to give cardholders the security that the deals they have access to are the best available rates.

In that regard, Capital One Travel has the look and feel of an online travel agency, and not the clunkiness that you might expect.

Capital One compares its flight, hotel and car pricing with travel sites such as Expedia and Orbitz and tweaks its prices “to beat or match competitors,” according to officials.

Jenn Scheurich, head of travel experiences, said Capital One Travel bookers can have the confidence they are getting the best deals.

We took the travel portal out for a limited spin, and saw flight and hotel prices basically comparable to big-name travel sites. On Kayak, as a means of comparison, there were several travel sites with names you probably never heard of that were offering lower hotel rates. But in some instances, you had to jump through proverbial hoops — insert an email address and submit a texted code to get the member-only price — at these little-known sites to retrieve a lower rate.

Capital One Travel has some exclusive deals and pledges to provide best available public rates, and not such member-only and relatively opaque, or hidden, deals.

In searching for a San Juan to Newark roundtrip November 1 to November 5, Capital One Travel informed me to “book now” because prices were likely to be the lowest they are going to get, and I would receive up to $50 back if the price dipped further.

A United flight for $189 on Capital One Travel was roughly comparable to the fare on United.com, although the price was tough to compare because on Capital One Travel a recommended roundtrip departing at 1:05 a.m. was economy on the flight to Newark and rock-bottom basic economy on the flight to San Juan four days later to get to that price.

A nice feature of the portal is that if you intend to book the flight using Capital One rewards and you have more than one Capital One card in your wallet or rucksack, then the site enables you to switch from one card to another to tap miles to use.

But there are big holes in the portal. Like most online travel sites, the Capital One Travel portal doesn’t have access to one of the largest U.S. airlines, Southwest, so that would be expected as Expedia and Priceline don’t offer Southwest flights, either. But JetBlue is also missing from the mix on Capital One Travel.

So when I looked to book a roundtrip flight November 1-5 from JetBlue focus cities Boston to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and back, the only airline options were United, American, Spirit and Delta — and no JetBlue.

I also came up with “no flights found” on Capital One Travel when searching for a November 15-22 roundtrip from Seattle to Beijing although Google Flights offered several choices from an assortment of airlines, including a combination of Air Canada, JAL, China Southern and United.

[ Update: Although it didn’t show up in my searches, Capital One Travel does indeed offer Seattle to Beijing flights from a combination of carriers such as Alaska and China Southern.]

Capital One led a $170 million financing round in March for Hopper, which began powering the Capital One Travel beta in September. Look for Hopper to make similar business-to-business deals. For example, it partnered with Kayak to offer Hopper’s price freeze feature.

The price tracking that both Hopper and Capital One offer isn’t unique; Google Flights enables users to track fight prices, too. It’s still a convenient feature to view price trends and to learn when to book.

On the down side, and this isn’t a severe drawback, flight recommendations on rival travel sites seem to more curated and refined than the ones I saw on Capital One Travel. In the San Juan to Newark flight cited above, Capital One Travel recommended a United departure at 1:05 a.m., which might not be the most fun although it was the lowest fare.

On the hotel front, Capital One sources some exclusive deals, and you can vet hotel choices using Tripadvisor reviews that are integrated into the portal.

A perk in the making is cardholder pricing on soon to open Capital One airport lounges at Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver and Dulles international airports. Yoga rooms and Peloton bikes will be featured, the company said.

In sum, if you are a Capital One cardholder, Capital One Travel, which is a work in progress, can be a surprisingly nice addition to your list of travel booking options. It offers fare predictions and price drop protections that most other sites don’t have, and you can use the portal to load up on miles and to redeem them, too.

But Capital One Travel doesn’t reach the heights of comprehensiveness yet so like all things in shopping for travel, it pays to look around and compare potential deals. No one site or portal has it all.

“We are actively looking to add on additional airlines and hotels in the near future,” a Capital One spokesperson said.

Note: This story has been updated to add the pending opening of a Capital One lounge at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and to note that Capital One Travel indeed offers flight bookings to Chinese destinations from Seattle, for example.

**Terms, conditions and exclusions apply.  Refer to your Guide to Benefits for more details.

In the first year, you'll receive $300 in travel credits and 75,000 miles worth at least $750 in travel from the welcome bonus, which makes this card easier to justify.

CNBC Select calculated how many points the average American can earn in a year when using their Capital One Venture X card. We worked with the location intelligence firm Esri, who provided us with a sample annual spending budget of $22,126.

The budget includes six main categories: groceries ($5,174), gas ($2,218), dining out ($3,675), travel ($2,244), utilities ($4,862) and general purchases ($3,953). Here's what the average consumer would earn using this card:

  • Groceries: 10,348 Capital One miles
  • Gas: 4,436 Capital One miles
  • Dining out: 7,350 Capital One miles
  • Travel: 11,220 Capital One miles (Assuming all travel earns 5X miles for every dollar spent on flights through Capital One Travel)
  • Utilities: 9,724 Capital One miles
  • General purchases: 7,906 Capital One miles

With all spending considered, this would give a cardholder 50,984 Capital One miles in the first year, and if you include the 75,000 miles welcome bonus, 125,984 miles. Over a five year period, cardholders could earn 229,920 Capital One miles. Cardholders could earn more (or less) miles depending on their annual spending habits.

But arguably the best part of the card is earning Capital One miles that can be redeemed in a number of ways.

Earning Capital One miles

Earning Capital One miles is simple as Capital One offers several travel credit cards , including the Capital One Venture X card, with excellent spending categories.

With the Venture X card, you will earn:

  • 2X miles for every dollar spent on all eligible purchases
  • When booking travel through the  Capital One Travel  portal, you will earn 5X miles for every dollar spent on flights and 10X miles for every dollar spent on hotels and rental cars

This means that all purchases outside of Capital One Travel bookings will earn you a minimum of 2% back in value, which is a respectable return. And if you prefer to book through Capital One Travel you'll be rewarded handsomely.

If you enjoy earning Capital One miles, but don't want to pay a large annual fee upfront, be sure to also consider the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . (See rates and fees ).

Redeeming Capital One miles

Capital One miles can be redeemed in several ways, including:

  • Booking travel directly through Capital One Travel
  • Transferring them to the 15+ different airline and hotel partners (like Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Air Canada Aeroplan)
  • Use them for recent travel purchases on your credit card statement
  • Redeem them for gift cards
  • Redeem for cash back (note: this is the least valuable option. If you want to earn cash back, consider a cash-back credit card )

The most valuable way to redeem Capital One miles is to transfer them to the various travel partners and book business or first-class award flights. The 15+ partners include: Aeromexico, Air Canada, Air France-KLM, ALL Accor Live Limitless, Avianca, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Choice Privileges, Emirates, Etihad, EVA Air, Finnair, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines and Wyndham Hotels.

While the majority of these are international programs, they're still great to book U.S. based flights. For example, you can send your miles to Turkish Airlines and book one-way United Airlines flights to Hawaii for 7,500 miles in economy and 12,500 miles in first class.

By transferring them, you're able to have more control over the value of your miles. This is different than redeeming them through Capital One Travel or erasing travel purchases, which gives Capital One miles a fixed value of one cent per point.

The card has a $395 annual fee. It does not have any  foreign transaction fees (see rates & fees ). The balance transfer fee is $0 at the Transfer APR (4% of the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer to you) and late payment fees can be up to $8.

If you plan on carrying a balance month to month, this card may not be the best. It has a high interest rate range of 19.99% - 29.99% variable APR (see rates & fees ). If you want to avoid  accruing interest , consider a credit card with a  0% introductory APR offer like the Wells Fargo Reflect ® Card (0% intro APR for 21 months on purchases and qualifying balance transfers from account opening; 18.24%, 24.74%, or 29.99% variable APR thereafter; see rates and fees ).

The Capital One Venture X can provide great value for consumers who enjoy traveling and want perks to make their experience even better. But, is the Venture X the best travel-rewards credit card for you?

CNBC Select analyzed two other premium travel credit cards to see how they match up with one another.

Capital One Venture X vs. Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is a great premium travel credit card, but how does it match up to the Venture X?

It has a $550 annual fee , but it comes with a long list of benefits, including being able to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points. As you spend on the card, you will earn:

  • 5X points per dollar spent on flights when you purchase travel through Chase Travel℠ after the $300 travel credit is spent on travel purchases annually.
  • 10X points per dollar spent on hotels and car rentals when you purchase travel through Chase Travel℠ after the $300 travel credit is spent on travel purchases annually.
  • 3X points per dollar spent on other travel worldwide after the $300 travel credit is spent on travel purchases annually.
  • 10X points per dollar spent on Chase Dining purchases with Ultimate Rewards ® .
  • 3X points per dollar spent on other dining at restaurants, including eligible delivery services, takeout and dining out.
  • 1X point per dollar spent on all other purchases.

The benefits of the card are very similar to the Capital One Venture X, as both include travel insurance , a $300 travel credit, airport lounge access through Priority Pass, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit and rental car insurance .

The Capital One Venture X's welcome offer of 75,000 miles is larger than the 60,000 points offered by the Sapphire Reserve. While Chase points are worth 1.5 cents each when redeemed through Chase Travel℠ with the Sapphire Reserve, the flexibility of Capital One miles to cover recent travel purchases. However, Capital One miles are worth only 1 cent each when redeemed this way.

Capital One has more transfer partners than Chase, but Chase's partners include more hotel and domestic airline options. You'll want to evaluate how you'll redeem points to decide which program is more useful to you.

Overall, the Sapphire Reserve offers a few more benefits, like Lyft Pink and Peloton and DoorDash statement credits. But these are more so considered "lifestyle benefits". If you're specifically focused on travel-related benefits, the Capital One Venture X travel perk's more easily offset the annual fee compared the Sapphire Reserve.

  • No special financing offers on new purchases

The Amex Platinum Card is another premium travel card available to consumers, but how does it stack up against the Venture X?

The card has a $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ), which is one of the highest annual fees around.

To get started with the card, you can earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first six months.

As you spend on the card, you will earn:

  • 5X Membership Rewards® points per dollar spent with airlines directly or with Amex Travel, up to $500,000 per calendar year
  • 5X points per dollar spent on prepaid hotels with AmexTravel.com
  • 1X point per dollar spent on all other purchases

The card also comes with a long list of lifestyle and travel benefits, including:

  • Up to $200 Uber Cash credit and Uber VIP status. Benefit renews annually. Uber Cash and Uber VIP status is available to Basic Card Member only. Terms Apply.
  • Up to $200 airline fee credit

  • $155 Walmart+ credit. Plus ups not eligible. Subject to auto-renewal.
  • Up to $189 CLEAR® Plus credit
  • Access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion lounges and Delta SkyClubs when flying Delta on the same day
  • Complimentary gold status at Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors
  • Comprehensive travel insurance
  • Rental car loyalty program benefits
  • Access to American Express concierge service

The Amex Platinum has now rebranded itself as a lifestyle card, rather than purely a travel card. Compared to the Venture X, one is not necessarily better than the other, as both cards target slightly different audiences.

If your goal is to grab a travel credit card purely for travel , the Capital One Venture X is likely the better choice. However, the Platinum has more travel perks than the Venture X, including better airport lounge access and complimentary hotel elite status with Hilton and Marriott. Most will have an easier time recouping the cost of the annual fee with the Venture X's simple travel credit and anniversary miles, but the Amex Platinum does offer a whopping $1,500 in credits a year.

The Capital One Venture X is a great addition to the credit card portfolio of someone who enjoys traveling and is not brand loyal. The points you earn can be used to cover any travel purchase, so this card is really best for someone who isn't focused on earning status with either a hotel or airline.

This card is a solid option for someone who values simplicity when it comes to earning back the value of their annual fee. By simply using the travel credit, earning the 10,000 miles anniversary bonus, and earning 2X points on every dollar spent on eligible purchases — cardholders will quickly make up for the cost of the $395 annual fee (see rates & fees ).

Additionally, if you have upcoming travel that you've not planned yet, this card would be a great addition for multiple reasons. You'd be able to take advantage of the credits for travel immediately after receiving the card, and the associated spending would get you even closer to meeting the minimum spend threshold to reach the 75,000-point welcome bonus.

Also, if you've trusted family members or friends, this card is great as there are no additional fees for authorized users. They will have equal access to airport lounges and help you earn even more Capital One miles along the way.

Lastly, if you have an iPhone or another smartphone that is worth a decent chunk of change, this card is great as it comes with cell phone insurance. All you need to do is pay your monthly bill with the card, and it is automatically covered in case of damage or theft.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is arguably one of the best premium credit cards on the market right now. It has a modest annual fee (for a premium card) and delivers value quickly in the form of travel credits. And the welcome offer makes this card incredibly valuable in its first year.

However, before applying for this card, be sure that you have an excellent credit score as well as the ability to earn the welcome offer without overspending. But if you're an avid traveler and are able to meet the criteria for the card, this one is worth strongly considering.

How we Choose

Capital One’s new travel booking platform is incredibly straightforward and offers excellent price prediction and protection tools. However, it might not be the best value for every cardholder.

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of our partner offers may have expired. Please review our list of best credit cards , or use our CardMatch™ tool to find cards matched to your needs.

Capital One miles are known for their flexibility – as you can redeem them for just about any purchase. You can even use miles to cover the cost of travel you book on any site without sacrificing any of their value.

But Capital One Travel cardholders have another option for booking their next vacation . Capital One offers its own, freshly revamped travel portal – Capital One Travel.

Booking a trip through Capital One Travel has its pros and cons, but it can be particularly lucrative for some cardholders. For example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers an up to $300 annual credit for travel you book with Capital One Travel; it also earns 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X miles on flights you book through the portal. Some of the other eligible cards offer extra rewards on certain bookings through the portal, too.

Read on to learn more about why booking through Capital One Travel may or may not be the best option for you.

  • What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is the Capital One’s travel booking site. Now powered by Hopper, it offers qualifying cardholders the opportunity to reserve flights, hotels or car rentals. You can pay for these bookings using miles, cash or a combination of the two.

You can use the Capital One Travel portal if you carry a:

  • Capital One Spark Miles for Business
  • Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business *
  • Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard®

These cards have also been added to access the portal:

  • Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card *
  • Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Spark Cash Plus
  • Capital One Spark Cash Select – $500 Cash Bonus
  • Capital One Spark Cash Select Intro APR Card
  • Journey Student Rewards from Capital One
  • How to book with Capital One Travel

To access the Capital One Travel portal, visit your eligible card account either online or on the mobile app and click “View Rewards.” You can select “book a trip” to be redirected to the travel portal.

capital one welcome page

Capital One Travel looks and works much like most third-party booking sites, allowing cardholders to search for flights, hotels or car rentals. You can pay for your trip with miles, cash or a combination of the two.

Booking flights

To book a flight via the Capital One Travel portal, just enter your travel dates and departure and arrival destinations. If you have a particular airline you prefer, you can also filter the results by carrier, as well as by price, the number of stops and more.

reviews of capital one travel

The portal now allows you to see whether it’s a good time to book or if you should wait for a better price. You can also set up a price watch to receive an alert when Capital One Travel determines it’s the best time to book.

Booking hotels

You can search hotels on Capital One Travel by location and date. The search results page is a little different from flights, however, as it includes the price per night, total price for your trip and the TripAdvisor rating of that particular property.

Capital One Travel makes it easy to get a full snapshot of hotels, without having to separately search reviews of affordable options. You can also filter to properties with specific amenities, like a bar or parking.

Booking car rentals

Finally, Capital One Travel also offers a car rental booking service. After entering your pickup and drop-off information, you can review results and filter them by car rental company, price and other specifications.

Price protection and flexible cancellation

The updated Capital One Travel portal also offers valuable price protection tools, as well as options for flexible cancellation.

Price drop protection enables cardholders who purchase airfare based on Capital One’s recommendation to get a refund if the price drops after booking. There’s also a price match guarantee, which allows customers who find a better price for a flight, hotel or rental car on another site within 24 hours of booking to receive a refund for the difference.

Additionally, customers can “freeze the price” of a flight if they find a good deal but aren’t ready to make a purchase. If the price increases after the freeze, Capital One will cover any increase, up to a refund limit. And if the price goes down, the customer will pay the lower price.

For a small, upfront fee, the portal offers the option to cancel flights for any reason up to 24 hours before the first scheduled departure and receive most of the airfare cost back.

Drawbacks of booking with Capital One Travel

Booking through Capital One Travel is simple, but there are a few drawbacks to keep in mind.

No travel packages

Many similar issuer booking platforms, like Wells Fargo Rewards , allow cardholders to book full travel packages in addition to individual flights and hotels. For some travelers, this takes the stress out of organizing several different reservations.

Capital One Travel does not have the option to book such packages. It does, however, let you group your hotel, flight and car rentals into an itinerary and pay for them together.

No hotel elite status

Capital One Travel is a third-party booking site, which means that you likely won’t be able to take advantage of any hotel elite status you might carry. For the most part, hotels require you to book directly with them to unlock elite perks like free breakfast or room upgrades.

Is booking with Capital One Travel worth it?

In some cases, booking with Capital One Travel can be the easiest way to plan your next trip. Plus, all the price prediction and protection tools can help you save on airfare. However, there are a few things to consider before deciding if it is the best platform for you.

Capital One Travel rates compared to other booking sites

For the most part, Capital One Travel has competitive rates. We compared a flight from Austin, Texas, to London and found nearly identical costs on Capital One Travel and the United site.

However, we also found a few cases where prices varied across different booking sites – with Capital One lagging behind. As you can see below, a four-night stay at a hotel in the U.K. is showing different rates on different sites, and Capital One is not always the best price.

For this reason, we recommend that you always comparing rates across multiple sites before you book through the portal.

Spending miles

Capital One miles are incredibly flexible, and you can use them to cover the cost of travel you book on any website at the same value. That means there is no benefit to choosing one platform over the other to try to stretch your miles further.

Added rewards with Capital One credit cards

Previously, Capital One was only accessible to Venture and Spark Miles cardholders. However, now the issuer has increased availability of its travel portal to most of its cash back cards, including the Quicksilver, Savor, Spark Cash and Student cards.

To top it off, the cash back cards now earn unlimited 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars you book through Capital One Travel. The Venture and Spark Miles cards still earn bonus miles on bookings you make at the travel portal.

When shopping around different booking sites, be sure to factor in the price difference and the rewards you’d earn if you used your Capital One credit card .

Tips for maximizing Capital One Travel

  • Take advantage of price protection and prediction tools to make sure you get the best prices on airfare.
  • Pay the small cancellation fee when booking airfare. You get until 24 hours before your departure to cancel for any reason, and you may receive a refund of 70% to 90% of the ticket. Not many other booking sites offer this level of flexibility.
  • Compare rates on flights, hotels and car rentals with other booking sites to ensure you’re getting the best deal. You can always redeem miles to cover an outside travel purchase.
  • Combine miles and cash if you don’t have enough rewards to cover the cost of your reservation.

Bottom line

The updated Capital One Travel portal offers cardholders an easy booking and miles redemption process, as well as some incredibly useful tools for securing the best airfare prices. However, before you use it to book travel – especially at hotels – compare prices on various platforms to ensure you’re getting a good deal.

In 2018, Capital One joined the transferable points game by adding transfer partners to its Capital One Venture and Spark Miles cards line. This added more value to an impressive, existing lineup of credit cards and instantly made the mileage currency one that every travel enthusiast should consider.

Over the years, we’ve seen Capital One beef up the transfer partner list. The company has 15+ airline and hotel transfer partners and almost all of its transfer ratios are a favorable 1:1.

This move cemented Capital One’s place in the transferable points space and showed that the bank is continuing to work on enhancing its customers’ Capital One Miles experience.

But is earning Capital One miles right for you? And more importantly, are Capital One miles any good? Here’s a full review of Capital One Miles, Capital One’s transfer partners, and the cards that earn Capital One miles.

Capital One miles are the mileage currency earned by a handful of Capital One credit cards, both personal and business.

You must have an eligible Capital One credit card to earn these miles, and there is no way to acquire them without one of these cards. You can earn Capital One miles on all your purchases, though, and most Capital One credit cards earn more than 1 point per dollar spent on all purchases, in addition to other fantastic benefits.

The actual amount of miles you’ll earn per dollar spent varies from card to card. Don’t worry — we’ll run through how many miles each Capital One Miles credit card earns in the next section of this article. Just note that some Capital One cards earn up to 10x Capital One miles per dollar spent in specific spending categories!

You can redeem your Capital One miles in various ways, but we think transferring them to travel partners is the best . This is because you’ll get the most value for your miles and be able to book redemptions such as ANA first class , Emirates first class , and even tickets in Singapore Suites !

You can earn Capital One miles with various Capital One-issued personal and business credit cards .

Here’s a quick look at all of the credit cards that earn Capital One miles:

The Capital One Venture card is Capital One’s classic travel rewards credit card. It offers 2x miles per dollar on all  purchases . It also earns 5x miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

This makes the card an easy go-to for many travelers — you don’t have to worry about using a specific card for bonus miles in a specific purchase category. Instead, you’ll earn 2x miles per dollar across the board, making it easy to rack up miles.

The card has some other neat benefits, too. Namely, it offers up to a $100 statement credit that you can use towards your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee . Simply charge the fee to your Capital One Venture card, and you’ll see the application fee refunded as a statement credit when your statement closes.

Further, the card has no foreign transaction fees ( rates & fees ). This means you can make purchases abroad or pay for purchases in a foreign currency without being penalized. Some cards charge up to 3% per foreign transaction, so a $100 purchase quickly becomes a $103.

You can also access Hertz Five Star status, secondary car rental insurance, and no-additional-fee authorized users with this card ( rates & fees ).

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

The card offers unlimited miles at 1.25x per $1 and no annual fee. When you consider the flexible rewards, frequent travelers come out on top.

Interested in a travel rewards credit card without one of those pesky annual fees? Then say hello to the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card.

In addition to no annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne card offers no foreign transaction fees.

But is this card worth its salt, or is it merely a shell of the more popular Capital One Venture card?

  • No annual fee ( rates & fees )
  • No foreign transaction fees ( rates & fees )
  • Ability to use transfer partners
  • Weak earn rate at 1.25x miles per $1 spent on all purchases
  • No luxury travel or elite benefits
  • $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees
  • Earn a bonus of 20,000 miles once you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $200 in travel
  • Earn unlimited 1.25X miles on every purchase, every day
  • Enjoy 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months; 19.99% - 29.99% variable APR after that; balance transfer fee applies
  • APR: 19.99% - 29.99% (Variable),0% intro on purchases for 15 months

The Capital One VentureOne card is the Capital One Venture card’s little brother. The card has no annual fee but earns fewer miles and has fewer benefits ( rates & fees ).

Instead of earning 2x miles on all purchases, the Capital One VentureOne card earns 1.25x miles per dollar . It even earns 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel!

This isn’t the best no-annual-fee card we’ve seen — the Chase Freedom Unlimited ®  earns 1.5% cash-back on all purchases — but it’s still better than a standard 1 point per dollar spent.

The card does not have foreign transaction fees ( rates & fees ). Because of this transfer ability, the Capital One VentureOne card is still worth a look for travelers who don’t want to deal with fees.

Hot Tip: A great perk with all Capital One consumer and business cards through June 22, 2024, is a free 6-month membership to The Cultivist , a service offering free access to museums worldwide.

This card is similar to the personal Capital One Venture card, but it has business-specific benefits that make it useful for businesses of all types and sizes. Unlike the popular Capital One Spark Cash Plus Card*, it earns Capital One miles instead of cash-back.

Like the Capital One Venture card, businesses can earn 2x miles per dollar spent on all purchases and 5x miles on hotel bookings and car rentals booked through the Capital One Travel portal. Just note that these hotel stays may not be eligible to earn hotel points or use elite status benefits (if you have them).

Further, there’s an included TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit  for the primary cardholder. As you’d expect, the Capital One Spark Miles card also has no foreign transaction fees , making it great for businesses that pay international invoices with a credit card.

There are some business-specific benefits that Capital One adds to all of its Spark business credit cards, too. These include easily exporting purchase records, generating year-end spending summaries, and requesting free employee cards with set spending limits. You can also elect account managers on your team to make payments, manage statements, and more.

Like the Capital One VentureOne card is to the Capital One Venture card, this card earns fewer miles and has fewer benefits, but may be worthwhile for cash-strapped companies and other businesses that don’t want to lock up cash in card annual fees.

The card earns 1.5x miles per dollar spent on all purchases and has no foreign transaction fees . You’ll also earn 5x miles per dollar spent on rental cars and hotel rooms booked through Capital One Travel, making it easy to earn some bonus miles on employee travel booked through the portal.

White car in the desert

Beyond making purchases with your Capital One credit card, there aren’t many ways to earn bonus Capital One miles.

However, there is an exception to this: booking flights, rental cars, and hotel rooms with select cards through Capital One Travel , Capital One’s in-house online travel agency (OTA).

If you have a Capital One Venture card, Capital One VentureOne card, Capital One Spark Miles card, or a Capital One Spark Miles Select card, you’ll earn 5x Capital One miles per dollar when you book rental cars and hotels through the portal.

This can be especially lucrative for businesses that regularly charge client-reimbursable travel expenses to their business credit card.

If you have a Capital One Venture X card or the Capital One Venture X Business card, this number goes up to 10x miles per dollar for rental cars and 5x miles per dollar on flights .

These bonus categories can help you rack up some serious bonus miles if you have lots of paid travel expenses.

A $500 hotel stay could earn a whopping 5,000 Capital One miles . We recently valued Capital One miles at 1.8 cents per point, meaning that this miles haul is worth — at a minimum — a cool $90 for Capital One Venture X cardholders.

Capital One Refer A Friend

Cardholders of the Capital One Venture X card, Capital One Venture card, and Capital One VentureOne card can earn bonus miles (that vary by card) through a personal referral link through the Refer-A-Friend program . So long as the person who signs up with your link is a new Capital One cardholder, you’ll earn bonus miles for each friend approved.

To find your link, sign in to your account or look in the app for the Refer a Friend tile on the account details page.

You will only be eligible for the program if all of your accounts are open and not in default.

Singapore Suites First Class - Suite Seat

Capital One offers a variety of ways for its cardholders to redeem Capital One miles . While we generally suggest sticking with moving miles to transfer partners, there are a few other ways Capital One miles can be redeemed, too.

To fully review your options, we’ll take you through all of your Capital One miles redemption options below.

Transferring Capital One Miles to Transfer Partners

The most lucrative way to redeem your Capital One miles is by transferring them to one of its numerous transfer partners. The bank’s list of transfer partners includes some of the most well-known airline mileage programs and hotel loyalty programs, and some of its transfer partners are exclusive to Capital One .

The upside to transferring to travel partners instead of using one of Capital One’s other redemption options is that you’re not restricted to a single point value. Rather, the value of your miles depends on what you’re redeeming them for after you transfer them.

For example, you can transfer your Capital One miles to Singapore Airlines’ Krisflyer loyalty program and book a ticket in the airline’s world-famous Suites first class product. Doing this will likely give you over 4 cents per point in value .

Most transfer partners are at a 1:1 ratio, though a couple still fall under the 2:1.5 or 2:1 ratio. An example is transferring Capital One miles to EVA Air Infinity MileageLands at 2:1.5. Transferring 100,000 Capital One miles to EVA Air  would yield 75,000 miles . On the other hand, most other transfer partners like Avianca LifeMiles and Emirates Skywards process at a 1:1 ratio.

Here’s a quick look at all of the Capital One Miles transfer partners , along with their transfer rates:

Many transfer partners overlap with Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and American Express Membership Rewards. However, some partners, such as ALL – Accor Live Limitless and Finnair Plus, are exclusive to Capital One Miles , so adding a Capital One card to your wallet could open you up to even more redemptions, even if you have a stash of other points.

Bottom Line: Before you transfer miles,  find the ticket you want to book and ensure that award space is available. Doing this will prevent you from locking up your miles without a plan and potentially getting stuck with airline miles or hotel points you can’t use. Keeping your miles as liquid as possible until you redeem them is critical to ensuring you get the best value when redeeming them.

Turn Your Capital One Miles Into Gift Cards

You can redeem your Capital One miles for gift cards to popular merchants such as Applebee’s, AutoZone, and Macy’s. All gift card redemptions are processed at a value of 1 cent per mile , meaning that 50,000 Capital One miles are equal to a $500 gift card to a merchant of your choice.

We don’t recommend redeeming your Capital One miles for gift cards, as you’ll get a lower cent per point value than redeeming them through one of Capital One’s transfer partners.

However, if you don’t have any upcoming travel plans, gift cards are a better use of miles than if you were to redeem for cash-back or through Amazon.

Cover Amazon Purchases With Capital One Miles

Like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards, you can use your Capital One miles to cover Amazon purchases at checkout. Add your Capital One card to your Amazon payment methods, and you can use miles to cover your Amazon purchases.

Remember that you’ll get a low-point valuation if you go this route. Capital One miles can be redeemed at a flat rate of 0.8 cents per mile spent. For reference, the 0.8 cent valuation towards Amazon purchases means 125 Capital One miles gives you $1 off your purchase.

So, with that in mind, stay away from this type of redemption . It may be a convenient way to use your miles to save money on everyday purchases, but you’ll lose tons of value in the process.

Redeem for a Statement Credit or Check

Finally, you can redeem your Capital One miles for cash-back through a statement credit or a check.

However, we don’t necessarily recommend doing this. You’ll get a flat 0.5 cents per point in value when redeeming miles this way. So 50,000 miles would be worth just $250.

With that in mind, we recommend avoiding cashing out your Capital One miles for statement credit or a check. You’re better off redeeming for a gift card or even redeeming miles through Amazon if you want to use your miles to cover everyday expenses.

Hot Tip: When your eligible card is linked to PayPal, you can checkout with PayPal and redeem your miles at a rate of 125 miles to $1. We’d recommend this only if you can’t use your miles for travel or as a statement credit.

As you know, Capital One Miles isn’t the only transferable points currency out there. Here’s a look at how these miles stack up to other transferable points programs like Amex, Chase, and Citi.

Capital One Miles vs. American Express Membership Rewards Points

American Express Membership Rewards is a premier transferable points program. There are more American Express transfer partners than Capital One, and its personal and business cards have more points-earning options, too.

For example, the American Express ® Gold Card earns 4x points per dollar spent at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per calendar year). When you consider that almost all Membership Rewards transfer partners transfer at a 1:1 ratio, many will find that Membership Rewards points are more valuable than Capital One miles.

Further, Capital One and American Express share many of the same transfer partners. There are some exceptions to this rule, though. For example, Amex does not offer ALL – Accor Live Limitless and Turkish Airlines.

On the other hand, many Membership Rewards-earning credit cards have higher annual fees than Capital One cards.

Capital One Miles vs. Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

Like Membership Rewards, Chase’s Ultimate Rewards points currency can be more easily earned than Capital One miles. This is especially true for business owners as the Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card earns 3x points per dollar spent in select business spending categories , including travel, shipping, and online advertising.

Further, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer 1:1 to all of its Chase transfer partners . You can redeem your points at up to 1.5 cents per point in value towards paid bookings through the Chase travel portal . The value you’ll get depends on the Ultimate Rewards credit card you have, though.

We recommend starting with Ultimate Rewards points when you begin your miles and points journey. This is because Chase’s famous 5/24 rule makes those with over 5 new credit cards in the past 24 months ineligible for new Chase credit cards .

Capital One Miles vs. Citi ThankYou Rewards

Citi’s ThankYou Points currency is another underdog of the miles and points world. It isn’t quite as well known as Amex or Chase’s options, but it’s worth a look if you’re over 5/24 and want to take advantage of exclusive transfer partners such as  Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles . That said, we still value Capital One miles higher than Citi ThankYou Points (which we value at 1.6 cents apiece).

So, you may want to check out Capital One before Citi , but only after you’ve exhausted your options for earning more valuable points currencies such as Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Now you know the ins and outs of Capital One Miles. We started by discussing what these miles are, and then we examined how to earn and spend them and compared them to other types of transferable points.

Capital One miles are a solid addition to your points and miles portfolio. They may not be as valuable as Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards. Still, the unique set of transfer partners, lucrative earnings on non-bonus spend categories, and interesting credit card benefits make them attractive for specific uses.

We highly recommend you stick to redeeming your Capital One miles through transfer partners.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa ® or Mastercard ® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Enrollment required through Capital One website or mobile app. Upon enrollment, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024. Please note enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g., at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program, and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Detailed review: Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

If you’re not a heavy spender, the annual fee for a top travel credit card could cost you more than the rewards you’d earn. With the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card — the $0 -annual-fee version of Capital One's popular travel card — you can earn rewards without worrying about a fee eating into their value ( see rates and fees ).

But several no-annual-fee travel cards can offer you higher ongoing rewards, not to mention more lucrative sign-up bonuses to get you on your way. You're better off exploring your options first.

Benefits and perks

Savings on fees and interest.

If you’re not a frequent flyer and you pay with credit only occasionally, the $0 annual fee is a strong selling point. You'll earn rewards while paying nothing to carry the card, assuming you pay your balance in full each month to avoid interest. The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card also travels well internationally; it charges no foreign transaction fees, and it's a Mastercard (and therefore widely accepted). And should you need some time to pay off a large purchase, the card offers an introductory 0% APR period for purchases, a relatively rare feature on a travel credit card.

Redemption flexibility

The redemption process on the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is as flexible as it gets for travel cards. Miles are worth 1 cent apiece when redeemed for travel. You can redeem three ways:

Use your miles to book travel through Capital One's travel platform.

Use your card to pay for travel, and then redeem your miles for statement credit against the expense.

Transfer your miles to leading travel loyalty programs.

Drawbacks and considerations

Low rewards rate.

This card's 1.25% base rewards rate is underwhelming when you consider that you can find no-fee rewards cards with 1.5% back or more. Compare it with these options:

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card has a $0 annual fee and earns 3 points per dollar on restaurants, travel and transit, gas and EV stations, popular streaming services, and select phone plans. All other purchases earn 1 point. Points are worth 1 cent each.

The $0 -annual-fee Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card earns 1.5 points per dollar on all spending, with points worth 1 cent apiece when redeemed toward travel.

The Discover it® Miles also has a $0 annual fee and earns 1.5 miles per dollar spent on everything. Miles are worth 1 cent apiece whether redeemed for travel or cash back.

Not ideal for bigger spenders

If you plan to put more than $12,750 a year on your card — about $1,060 a month — you'd get more value from the regular Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , even taking into account that card's annual fee of $95 ( see rates and fees ). That's because it gives you 2 miles per dollar spent on most purchases. Plus, this card has a much bigger sign-up bonus: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel. You'll also get an application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Precheck. Use our calculator to compare your estimated rewards with each card:

A cash-back card gives more flexibility

When it comes to travel credit cards, redemption is understandably geared toward travel. If you want to use your rewards for anything else, you typically get less value. Such is the case with the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card , where miles are worth 1 cent apiece when you redeem them for travel, but about half that when you use them to get cash back. Consider the Citi Double Cash® Card instead. It pays you 2% cash back on every purchase: 1% when you buy something and 1% when you pay it off. The annual fee is $0 .

Visit NerdWallet's best credit cards roundup for more potential alternatives.

alternate-pick-product-card-image

For higher rewards, consider this card, which gives you 2% cash back on every purchase (1% when you buy something + 1% when you pay it off). You can use your cash back for travel — or for anything else. The annual fee is $0 .

How to decide if it's right for you

If you’re looking for a low-cost travel card, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a decent choice. But overall, other no-annual-fee cards can offer more upfront and ongoing value.

And if you're OK with paying an annual fee in exchange for greater benefits and perks, check out our best travel credit cards page for even more options.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. The Venture X is an excellent option for jet setters who value luxury perks and can use the Capital One Travel portal. While the card has a high annual fee, the sign-up bonus and travel credits can more than offset the cost for those who travel often.

  • Generous sign-up bonus of 75,000 miles
  • $300 annual travel credit
  • Unlimited lounge access
  • 10X miles on hotels and rental cars, 5X on flights booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2X miles on all other purchases
  • Up to $100 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit
  • High annual fee of $395
  • Redemption inflexibility with some travel partners
  • Points value can fluctuate

Capital One Venture X benefits

The Capital One Venture X Rewards benefits are generous and easy to use. Its annual fee is also much lower than rival premium travel credit cards.

“I think the Venture X has generated excitement among consumers, even those typically averse to annual fees, because the Venture X feels like having a few travel cards rolled into one,” says Zac Hood, founder of Travel Freely. “Because of its straightforward earning, redeeming, and simplified but valuable perks and benefits, it’s one of the simplest ultra-premium cards to understand.”

Here’s a closer look at some of the Venture X’s benefits.

Sign-up bonus

One of the most attractive features of the Capital One Venture X Credit Card is its generous sign-up bonus.

New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months.

The bonus is worth up to $750 in travel when redeemed through Capital One Travel. This offers a significant boost to your travel rewards right from the start.

If that wasn’t enough, you’ll earn a 10,000-mile bonus every account anniversary — worth $100.

Whether you're planning a luxurious getaway or simply looking to offset the cost of your next trip, the welcome bonus can help you reach your travel goals faster.

Earning rewards

The Capital One Venture X Rewards offers a straightforward and rewarding earning structure:

  • Earn 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • Earn 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel
  • Earn 2X miles on all other purchases

This earning potential allows you to quickly accumulate miles on everyday spending. It can be particularly lucrative for those who frequently book travel through Capital One Travel.

Keep in mind that the best earning rates — 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X miles on flights) — require you to book through Capital One Travel.

Travel perks and credits

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card also offers a suite of valuable travel perks. Cardholders receive a $300 annual travel credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel. This effectively lowers the card’s annual fee to $95.

Cardholders are also eligible for an up to $100 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit every four years.

Other notable travel perks include:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Primary rental car insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Premier Collection perks and credits for hotel bookings
  • No foreign transaction fees

Lounge access

Cardholders enjoy unlimited access to Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass lounges worldwide. With over 1,300 Priority Pass lounges across the globe, this benefit can significantly enhance your travel experience.

Capital One Lounges offer a premium lounge experience, with amenities like comfortable seating, complimentary food and beverages, high-speed Wi-Fi, and more.

Redeeming Capital One Venture X miles

One of the most valuable ways to redeem rewards is to book travel through the Capital One Travel portal. This option allows for more flexibility, as you can book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more using your miles. There are also no blackout dates, and miles never expire.

Cardholders can transfer miles to 15+ travel partners at a 1:1 ratio, including popular airlines like Air France/KLM Flying Blue, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines, as well as hotel chains like Wyndham and Choice Privileges.

Cardholders can redeem miles for cash back, gift cards, and other options. Remember that these redemption methods typically offer less value than travel redemptions.

How transferring miles work

Transferring miles to travel partners can be especially lucrative, helping you save hundreds (or even thousands) on travel.

Let’s see how transferring miles looks in practice. Let’s say you want to take a one-way flight to Dubai from New York City on June 8 via Turkish Airlines.

Depending on when you book, prices are around $1,000 for economy class and well over $4,000 for a business class seat.

transferring miles 1.webp

But, if you use transfer miles from your card directly to Turkish Airlines — a Capital One travel partner — you’d only need 78,000 miles for economy or 180,000 miles for business class ticket.

transferring miles 2.webp

Or, let’s say you want to fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo, Japan, in September. A normal one-way economy ticket would cost around $2,000-$3,000. A business-class ticket would cost upwards of $8,000.

Transferring miles 3.webp

But Air Canada — another Capital One travel partner — offers flights between North America and Pacific time zones for 45,000-80,000 miles for economy class and 75,000-175,000 miles for business class.

Finding deals with miles takes a little work, but the savings can be substantial. Also, ensure availability before transferring miles to a partner airline.

If you don’t want to take the time to transfer miles to travel partners, you can also redeem miles as a statement credit or use rewards to book travel directly with Capital One.

Capital One Venture X drawbacks

One of the main drawbacks of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is its $395 annual fee. While this fee is lower than other premium travel credit cards, it can still be a significant expense for some cardholders — especially those who don’t travel often.

But it’s to analyze the value of the card's benefits in relation to the annual fee. For example, the $300 annual travel credit effectively reduces the annual fee to $95 for those who can fully utilize the credit. The value of the lounge access, travel insurance, and other perks can easily exceed the remaining $95 for frequent travelers.

The Venture X’s annual fee is also much lower than other premium travel cards. For example, the Platinum Card® from American Express has an annual fee of $695. See rates and fees. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has an annual fee of $550.

Redemption inflexibility

While Venture X offers a 1:1 transfer ratio to multiple travel partners, the value of these transferred miles can fluctuate based on the specific program and redemption. There’s often limited availability for award tickets, especially business class, which may not coincide with your travel plans.

Some travel partners may also have limited availability or blackout dates, restricting the usefulness of transferred miles.

Redeeming miles through the Capital One Travel portal may not always provide the best value, as prices on the portal may be higher than booking directly with airlines or hotels. That’s why you should carefully compare redemption options to ensure you get the most value from their miles.

Is the Capital One Venture X right for you?

While the Capital One Venture X Rewards offers impressive benefits, it's essential to consider your travel habits and spending to determine if the card is a good fit. The Venture X is an excellent choice for frequent travelers who:

  • Spend significantly on travel: If you frequently book flights, hotels, and rental cars, the Venture X's bonus categories and travel credits can provide significant value.
  • Value airport lounge access: If you appreciate the comfort and convenience of airport lounges, the Venture X's complimentary access to Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass lounges can enhance your travel experience.
  • Can use the card's annual travel credit: If you can easily use the $300 annual travel credit through Capital One Travel bookings, this effectively reduces the card's annual fee to just $95.

If you rarely travel or prefer to book directly with airlines and hotels, the Capital One Venture X card may not provide enough value to justify the annual fee. On the other hand, if you frequently book travel through the Capital One Travel portal and can take advantage of lounge access and other perks, the card can be a valuable addition to your wallet.

“For those who can utilize the Capital One Venture X card's numerous benefits, it provides excellent value despite the $395 annual fee,” says Hood. “The card effectively pays for itself with the $300 travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles [on each account anniversary].”

Alternatives to the Capital One Venture X card

The major alternatives to the Venture X card include The Platinum Card from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve . Here’s a shortcut to how their fees, benefits, earning rates, and perks stack up.

The bottom line

The Capital One Venture X Rewards is a premium travel credit card with great rewards, benefits, and travel protections. The card's tiered rewards structure, which favors travel purchases made through the Capital One Travel portal, can also be lucrative for those who can utilize this booking method.

However, the high annual fee and potential redemption inflexibility may be drawbacks for some cardholders. It's essential to carefully consider your travel habits and preferences to determine if the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card fits you.

Why I Downgraded My Capital One Venture Rewards Card

Vault’s viewpoint.

  • Don’t be afraid to downgrade a rewards card that isn’t serving you any longer.
  • Reasons why I downgraded the card included the annual fee and Capital One transfer partners.
  • Instead of closing my account, which could have affected my credit score, I chose to keep the card and downgrade to the VentureOne Rewards card.

Capital One Venture Rewards Card Highlights

Capital one venture rewards credit card.

After spending $4,000 in first 3 months from account opening

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a versatile travel card that earns:

  • 5X miles on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2X miles on all other purchases

Other top features include:

  • Welcome bonus: When you open the card and make $4,000 in purchases in the first three months of card ownership, you earn 75,000 bonus miles. That’s equal to $750 in travel.
  • Travel redemptions: Unlike some other travel rewards credit cards, the Venture Rewards card lets you redeem your miles directly to cover travel purchases you’ve already made.
  • TSA Precheck reimbursement: The Capital One Rewards card reimbursed me for the $85 application fee when I applied to the TSA Precheck program, which lets you speed through airport security. The Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit is worth up to $100 every four years when you charge membership to your card.
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver: This covers damage or theft when you pay for a rental car with your card.
  • Capital One Lounge visits: Cardholders receive two complimentary visits to Capital One Lounges and partner airport lounges each year. (a retail value of $65 for each Capital One Lounge visit).
  • Extended warranty: This applies to eligible items purchased with the card that already come with a manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Hertz Five Star status: You’ll receive benefits including car upgrades based on availability and a free additional driver.
  • Travel accident insurance: When you pay for travel with a common carrier with your card, you’ll receive automatic travel accident insurance.
  • Travel assistance services: Call a 24/7 hotline for help with medical and legal referrals, emergency translation services and more.

One of the first things I look at when deciding whether to keep a credit card is the annual fee. With the right benefits, an annual fee is definitely worth it, and I find you’ll usually receive at least as much value, if not more.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card was worth the $95 annual fee at first thanks to the welcome bonus, travel redemptions and TSA PreCheck credit. But after owning the card for a while, I wasn’t getting as much value compared to the annual fee as I did at the beginning.

For instance, when you enroll in a known-traveler program like TSA Precheck, your application is good for five years while you’re eligible for one statement credit per account every four years. So while the $85 reimbursement almost negates a $95 annual fee, it’s not something you can use year after year.

Similarly, although I used my welcome bonus miles to cover most of our three-bedroom Arizona Airbnb with a statement credit, I found I was earning much less via everyday spending. And while I loved the ability to cover travel purchases beyond flights and hotels, I was having a harder time justifying that perk against the annual fee.

Transfer Partners

The rewards you earn with the Capital One Venture Rewards card can be transferred to more than 15 travel partners, including:

  • Accor Live Limitless
  • Air France KLM
  • Avianca Life Miles
  • British Airways
  • Choice Hotels
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Airways
  • Singapore Airlines
  • TAP Air Portugal
  • Turkish Airlines

But when I travel, I fly domestically out of Pittsburgh, whose largest airlines are American Airlines and Southwest. After taking several trips, I realized I simply wasn’t getting the mileage, so to speak, out of the Venture Rewards card’s loyalty partners. I took just one international trip while holding the card—spending a week in Aruba—and flew Delta, which is not a Venture transfer partner.

What I’m Using Instead

After a few years as a Venture Rewards cardholder, I made the decision to downgrade to the VentureOne Rewards card, which has no annual fee. But that’s not the only travel rewards card in my wallet. I also carry two other cards:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, I can earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a minimum rate of 1X points (plus 3x points on dining and 2x points on other travel). With the Freedom Unlimited, I earn 1.5% cash back—but the kicker is that I can transfer those rewards to my Sapphire Preferred account, where I can transfer them 1:1 to airline partners or redeem them for travel. That makes the Sapphire Preferred and Freedom Unlimited a powerful combo .

The Sapphire Preferred’s transfer partners include a number of domestic loyalty programs that I use, including Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, Marriott Bonvoy and IHG One Rewards.

Like the Venture Rewards, the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee . But unlike the Venture Rewards, there’s no reimbursement for known-traveler programs like TSA Precheck.

Why I Didn’t Cancel The Card

Although I didn’t find myself using my Venture Rewards card as much as when I first opened it, I didn’t cancel my card. I downgraded to the VentureOne Rewards instead for a few reasons.

First, I still find the card to be a valuable addition to my wallet. Although I pulled back on traveling for a while, I knew that I was likely to take more trips in the future, and the VentureOne still provides a decent rewards rate and a lot of redemption flexibility.

I also wanted to protect my credit score . When you cancel a card and close your account, it decreases the overall amount of credit available to you. That in turn can affect your credit utilization , which is the amount you owe compared to your credit line. The amount of credit you’re using determines 30% of your credit score. You can also see a drop in your credit score if the card you cancel is one of your older accounts, as age of credit history factors into your credit score as well.

Now that I’ve had the VentureOne for some time, I’m considering upgrading again— the Venture X is the top tier card of the Venture card family, and it holds a lot of appeal. Though the Venture X carries a premium price tag at $395 for an annual fee, it also offers premium travel benefits for people with excellent credit. With a few big international trips in my future, I’m intrigued by the card’s $300 annual travel credit for Capital One Travel bookings and unlimited, complimentary lounge access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you downgrade the venture x card.

You may be able to downgrade your Venture X credit card, but you’ll need to check with Capital One first. The card issuer considers card downgrades or upgrades to be product changes, and you may need to have at least one year of card ownership under your belt to qualify. You can sign in to your Capital One account to see if you have card offers, including a lower-tier Venture card.

What Are the Rules for Downgrading the Venture Card?

When you change your Venture Card, whether it’s moving up to the Venture X or down to the VentureOne, you won’t need to apply, and Capital One won’t run a hard pull on your credit. You’ll get to keep your same credit card number and payment date, but your expiration date and security number will change. You also won’t be eligible for bonus offers for new card holders, though may potentially receive an upgrade offer.

What Happens to the Balance on My Venture Card if I Downgrade or Close It?

If you downgrade your Venture card to a card with a lower annual fee or no annual fee, your balance (and APR) goes with you to your new card. If you were to close your card instead, you’ll still be responsible for paying off that balance. Capital One will send you statements until your card balance is paid in full.

Why I Downgraded My Capital One Venture Rewards Card

Capital One Venture Rewards vs. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey: Which $95 card is better?

Ryan Wilcox

The mid-tier travel rewards card space is a cramped one. One of the best options on the market is the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , which offers great value to the average traveler with just a $95 annual fee (see rates and fees ). It racks up 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases and comes with a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit of up to $100.

But there's a new kid on the block: the recently launched Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card (see rates and fees ). It also has a $95 annual fee, plus valuable earning rates and benefits that make it a serious competitor to the more established Venture card.

Which is the better option for you now, and which will be the better option going forward? Let's dig into the cards' details to find out.

Capital One Venture Rewards vs. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey comparison

Capital one venture rewards vs. wells fargo autograph journey welcome offer.

reviews of capital one travel

The Venture Rewards comes with a welcome offer of 75,000 bonus Capital One miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening.

Those miles are worth $1,388 based on TPG's valuations , so you'll get a great value from the bonus, even though this is the standard offer for the card based on its offer history .

The Autograph Journey , meanwhile, comes with 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months. These points are worth $960 based on our valuations.

Winner : Venture Rewards. It has a more valuable welcome offer than the Autograph Journey.

Capital One Venture Rewards vs. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey benefits

The Venture Rewards comes with an up-to-$100 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry , plus rental car and travel accident insurance, extended warranty protection, Hertz Five Star status* and access to Capital One's Lifestyle Collection of hotels and Capital One Entertainment .

Meanwhile, the Autograph Journey comes with a $50 annual statement credit for airfare purchases, effectively lowering the annual fee to $45 if you can take advantage of that perk. Cardholders also receive cellphone protection and access to a new benefit called "Autograph Card Exclusives."

While details are scant at the moment, Autograph Card Exclusives promises to offer access to concerts showing "big-name artists in small venues," seemingly delivering an intimate experience with popular acts.

Winner : Venture Rewards. Despite the promise of the Autograph Journey's perks, the Venture's longer list of established benefits wins out.

Earning miles on the Capital One Venture Rewards vs. the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey

With the Venture Rewards , you'll earn 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases.

reviews of capital one travel

But the Autograph Journey has much broader bonus categories. With it, you'll earn 5 points per dollar spent on hotels, 4 points per dollar spent on airlines, 3 points per dollar spent on other travel and dining and 1 point per dollar spent on other purchases.

Winner : Autograph Journey. While we figure Wells Fargo points to be worth slightly less than Capital One miles, the additional bonus categories — namely, dining and airlines — will more than make up for that difference for most consumers.

Redeeming miles on the Capital One Venture Rewards vs. the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey

The Venture Rewards earns extremely valuable Capital One miles, giving you a bevy of redemption options that make the miles worth about 1.85 cents apiece, per our valuations.

reviews of capital one travel

You'll get the most value by transferring your miles to one of Capital One's travel partners , but you can also redeem them for a statement credit to cover travel purchases or for gift cards or cash back.

The Autograph Journey has a much smaller list of redemption options and transfer partners upon launch. It remains to be seen how these options will change. However, the issuer has promised more transfer partners will come throughout the year (more on that below).

Winner : Venture Rewards. Again, this could change if the Wells Fargo program continues to expand, but for now, Capital One still has the edge.

Transferring miles with the Capital One Venture Rewards vs. the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey

The Venture Rewards allows you to transfer your miles to any of Capital One's 15-plus hotel and airline partners, including valuable options like Avianca LifeMiles , British Airways Executive Club and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles .

reviews of capital one travel

And if you can take advantage of a transfer bonus, you'll get even more value from your miles. For instance, I prefer to redeem my miles by transferring them to Air France-KLM Flying Blue during a transfer bonus promotion and using them to book business-class flights to Europe.

The Autograph Journey currently allows cardholders to transfer points to five airline programs:

  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Iberia Plus (all earning Avios)

These are all great transfer partners and TPG favorites, though the number of options is obviously much smaller than those available with the Venture Rewards.

You'll also be able to transfer to a single hotel program, Choice Privileges , though that list hopefully will continue to grow as well.

Winner : Venture Rewards. Again, the current Wells Fargo transfer lineup isn't quite at Capital One's level.

Should I get the Capital One Venture Rewards or the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey?

If you want an established card with great benefits and redemption options, you'll want to stick with the Venture Rewards . You'll get a strong earning rate, the ability to take advantage of Capital One's transfer partners and some travel benefits for just a $95 annual fee (see rates and fees ).

If you want higher earning rates, the newly launched Autograph Journey is a viable option worth considering.

Bottom line

Despite their differences, the Venture Rewards and the Autograph Journey are excellent travel rewards cards with valuable benefits and earning rates for their mid-tier annual fee. The Venture Rewards' established list of perks and transfer partners give it the edge, but the Autograph Journey could be neck and neck soon given its growing list of redemption options.

Taking advantage of both cards could definitely make sense, too, if you can handle two $95 annual fees (see rates and fees for the Venture Rewards)..

We rate Capital One 4.2 out of 5 stars for its high interest rates on deposit accounts and no fees, but it has fewer than 300 branches across nine states

Key Takeaways:

  • Capital One offers savings accounts, checking accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs) with high annual percentage yields (APYs).
  • It has far fewer physical branches than other large banks, so it may not be a good choice for those who want to bank in person.
  • Capital One is best for those who prefer online and mobile banking and are looking for high-yield accounts with no fees or minimum requirements.

Capital One is a national, brick-and-mortar bank that mixes elements of traditional banks and online-only financial institutions. While it’s best known for its rewards credit cards, it also offers attractive deposit accounts with no fees and APYs above national averages.

In the MarketWatch Guides team’s Capital One Bank review, we at the MarketWatch Guides team detail the bank’s checking accounts, savings accounts and CDs, along with its reputation and how it stacks up against some of the best banks in the U.S.

Our Capital One Ratings

We give Capital One Bank 4.2 out of 5 stars after evaluating categories including its branch availability, account fees, interest rates and customer support. While the bank scores well across the board, its checking accounts earn the highest score.

Here’s how the company scores in each of these factors:

Capital One Bank vs. Other Top Banks

Capital One primarily operates as an online bank, but it still maintains a physical branch presence that online banks such as Ally Bank or SoFi Bank can’t compete with. However, compared to national banks such as Wells Fargo and Chase, Capital One has far fewer branches at just 272.

But what Capital One lacks in a physical footprint, it makes up for with its high-yield accounts. Large financial institutions, such as Chase, tend to offer low interest rates on their savings accounts. In comparison, Capital One’s 360 Performance Savings account earns more than nine times the national average savings rate.

Capital One’s accounts also have no fees or minimum deposit requirements, whereas Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America generally charge fees unless certain requirements are met.

Overview of Capital One Bank: Pros and Cons

Capital One was founded in 1988 by Richard Fairbank, who’s currently the CEO. While it initially focused on credit cards, it later expanded into commercial and retail banking. Today, Capital One is based in McLean, Va., and is the ninth-larges t bank in the United States , based on consolidated assets.

More recently, Capital One has been in the news after it announced its plan to acquire Discover Bank in February 2024. The merger is expected to be finalized in late 2024 or early 2025.Notably, Capital One combines common features of both brick-and-mortar and online-only banks. For instance, it offers some in-person banking access at physical branches while offering high interest rates and no fees on its deposit products. It also has Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) insurance, so deposits are safe up to the legal limit.

Who Is Capital One Best For?

Capital One is best for someone who’s looking for high-yield deposit accounts without fees or account minimums. It can also be a good option for someone who prefers online-only banking since it doesn’t have nationwide branch access.

Capital One Bank Accounts

Capital One offers several banking products, including checking accounts, savings accounts and CDs, but it doesn’t offer money market accounts . Kids (with the help of an adult) can open both a checking and savings account at Capital One.

Capital One also offers other financial products such as credit cards, auto loans and small business and commercial banking.

Capital One Checking Accounts

Capital one checking account overview.

We rate Capital One’s checking accounts 4.5 out of 5 stars. Capital One offers two checking accounts : Capital One 360 Checking and Money Teen Checking. Both of Capital One’s checking accounts provide these perks:

  • Earns interest, unlike most checking accounts
  • Access to a large ATM network
  • A Mastercard debit card

Pros and Cons

Capital one checking account options, 360 checking.

The Capital One 360 Checking account earns higher-than-average interest and has no account balance minimums, no monthly maintenance fees and no foreign transaction fees. You’ll also get your first checkbook for free. Given all the perks, Capital One 360 Checking can be an excellent choice for almost anyone looking for a checking account.

Checking account holders can also choose one of Capital One’s o verdraft option s to protect their account. You can set up your account to:

  • Auto-decline transactions
  • Automatically conduct a free transfer from a Capital One savings or existing money market account

If Capital One approves a transaction that overdraws a checking account, you won’t be charged an overdraft fee.

Money Teen Checking

The Money Teen Checking account is a joint checking account with a parent or legal guardian and a child aged eight or older. Adult co-owners don’t need to have a Capital One account to open a Money Teen Checking account. Instead, they can link an external bank account to their teen’s account.

While this account offers basic checking account features and direct deposit support, it doesn’t offer paper checks. It’s also only available online, so there’s no option for in-person account management or support.

Once a child turns 18 years old, they can choose to open a Capital One 360 Checking account and transfer their balance to that account. Otherwise, the teen account will remain open.

Capital One Savings Accounts

Capital one savings account overview.

We rate Capital One’s savings accounts 4.4 stars. There are two types of Capital One savings accounts: a 360 Performance Savings account and a Kids Savings Account. Both are high-yield savings accounts with no fees or minimum requirements.

Capital One Savings Account Options

360 performance savings.

The Capital One 360 Performance Savings account is a high-yield savings account with an APY that’s more than nine times the national average savings account rate of 0.46% as of April 15. This account comes with no account maintenance fees or minimum balance requirement. There’s also no minimum deposit required to open an account, though account holders need to fund their new account within 60 days.

The 360 Performance Savings account can be a great choice for those who are concerned about losing purchasing power due to inflation . However, as is the case with other high-yield savings accounts, this interest rate is variable and subject to change.

Kids Savings Account

The Kids Savings Account from Capital One is a joint account for an adult and a child under 18 years old. There’s no minimum age requirement, though kids under the age of 12 have to open an account with a parent or legal guardian. Like with the teen checking account, adult co-owners don’t need to have a Capital One account to open a Kids Savings Account.

Although this account’s APY isn’t as high as the 360 Performance Savings account, it’s still more than five times the national average. Plus, it’s substantially higher than many brick-and-mortar bank’s savings account rates, such as PNC Bank’s savings account for children , S is for Savings.

Capital One CDs

Capital one cd overview.

We rate Capital One CDs 4.4 out of 5 stars. The bank only offers standard, fixed-rate CDs. All of its CDs have no minimum opening deposit or minimum balance requirements.

Terms for Capital One 360 CDs range from six months to five years . All of its terms have attractive interest rates that are at least double the national averages. However, most of its CD rates aren’t competitive with the best CD rates on the market, which tend to be over 5%.

Like with most CDs, if you withdraw your money before the maturity date, you’ll have to pay an early withdrawal penalty. The amount of the penalty depends on the length of the term:

  • One-year term or less: Three months of interest
  • More than one-year term: Six months of interest

Capital One Reputation and Customer Satisfaction

BauerFinancial, an independent bank and credit union rating firm, gives Capital One 5 out of 5 stars . Capital One also has an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). However, the bank has an average customer review rating of 1.1 out of 5 stars, with most negative reviews citing poor customer service or issues with credit cards or transferring money.

Our review team reached out to Capital One for comment on its BBB customer review score but did not receive a response.

Mobile App Ratings

Capital One’s mobile banking app has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on Google Play, based on over 1.5 million reviews. On the App Store, the app is rated an average of 4.8 out of 5 stars , based on more than 8 million user reviews.

J.D. Power Banking Satisfaction

In 2023, Capital One placed first in overall banking satisfaction for the fourth year in a row in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. National Banking Satisfaction Study . That same year, Capital One earned the top spot in J.D. Power’s Online Banking Satisfaction Study and second place among national banks in J.D. Power’s Banking Mobile App Satisfaction Study.

Violation of the Bank Secrecy Act

In 2021, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) fined Capital One $390 million for “engaging in both willful and negligent violations of the Bank Secrecy Act.” FinCEN determined that Capital One failed to prevent money laundering and willfully ignored thousands of suspicious activity reports from 2008 to 2014 for its Check Cashing Group business unit. In addition to paying the penalty, Capital One closed its Check Cashing Group business and invested in an anti-money laundering program.

The Bottom Line: Is Capital One Bank Right for You?

Capital One can be a worthwhile choice for those who want to earn competitive rates on deposit accounts without paying account or overdraft fees. It offers several savings, checking and CD account options, and it has highly-rated mobile apps and customer satisfaction.

However, some customers may be disappointed by the limited number of physical branch locations. And while Capital One’s deposit account interest rates are competitive, you may be able to find higher APYs with online-only institutions.

FAQ: Capital One Bank Reviews

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards review: Simplify spending with 1.5% cash back

For fans of cash back, the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card offers both simplicity and a lot of potential value.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

Annual fee: $0

Welcome offer: Earn a $200 cash bonus after spending $500 within 3 months of account opening

Rewards: 1.5% cash back on every purchase; 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel

More details: 0% intro APR on new purchases and balance transfers for 15 months (ongoing 19.99%, 26.24%, or 29.99% variable APR)

Recommended credit score : Good to Excellent (670 – 850)

Capital One Quicksilver charges no annual fee.

This card is a great option for maximizing rewards at no extra cost, as long as you avoid interest charges and other added fees described within your card agreement.

Welcome offer

You can earn $200 as a cash welcome bonus when you make at least $500 in purchases within the first 3 months (about $167 per month in spending). Among no-fee flat cash-back cards, that’s one of the best offers — and lowest spending thresholds — you’ll find today.

Intro offer

Whether you have a large purchase to make or you want to pay down existing debt, the Quicksilver can help you save a significant amount on interest. This card has an introductory 0% APR on both new purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months. In other words, you won’t pay any interest on the card until at least 2025.

If you decide to transfer a balance, you’ll pay a balance transfer fee of 3% for balances posted within the 15-month intro period. After the intro period, the ongoing variable APR is 19.99%, 26.24%, or 29.99% on any balance you carry.

Rewards rate

This card’s rewards are straightforward: Earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase you make.

Like many Capital One cards, you can also get 5% back on hotels and rental cars when you book through Capital One Travel.

How to earn rewards

All you have to do to earn rewards with the Quicksilver card is use it to make your regular purchases. For many flat cash-back cards like this, a good way to maximize rewards is to use your card like a debit card. Put all your regular spending on the card to earn cash back, then make sure you can pay it off when your balance is due to avoid interest charges.

You won’t earn rewards on credits and returns. Cash advances and balance transfers don’t count as purchases and won’t earn rewards, either.

How to redeem rewards

As a cash-back card, the primary way to redeem your Quicksilver rewards is for cash. You can choose between a check in the mail, gift cards, and statement credits to your account — or use statement credits to cover individual purchases charged to your card. If you have an upcoming trip, you can even use cash back rewards to book travel through the Capital One Travel portal.

Your rewards don’t expire and there’s no limit to how much cash back you can earn.

Additional benefits

While there aren’t many added benefits for this no annual fee cash-back card , you will get a few. These include up to six months of Uber One membership (through Nov. 14, 2024; when you pay for full monthly membership with your card), no foreign transaction fees, and access to both Capital One Dining and Capital One Entertainment.

There are a few purchase and travel protections you’ll get too, including warranty protection, travel accident insurance, travel assistance services, and concierge service.

Who is the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Card best for?

With such a simple rewards structure, a flat cash-back card like the Quicksilver can add value to nearly anyone’s wallet.

Someone who wants one single credit card they can use for any purchase will find this card easy to use and maximize, since every type of purchase earns the same 1.5% back.

But it can be useful for someone who already has other cards, too. If you don’t mind a bit of extra strategizing, you can use it like a catch-all for purchases that don’t fit into your other cards’ bonus categories, and guarantee a minimum 1.5% back on each purchase.

Finally, the Quicksilver is a good long-term option for cardholders looking to pay down debt with a balance transfer. You can use the 15-month 0% intro APR to pay off your debt while establishing the habit of paying off your balance. Then when your debt is paid, continue to get value from the card’s cash back benefits.

This card may not be for you if you’re building credit or don’t already have a solid credit score. Capital One recommends an “excellent” credit rating for Quicksilver applicants, which may require an established credit history. There is a “good credit” version of the card that you may qualify for with a lower score, but it has a higher ongoing APR, no welcome bonus, and no introductory APR offer.

Capital One Quicksilver benefits

Simple rewards: A flat 1.5% cash back on every purchase makes it easy to maximize your Quicksilver rewards.

No annual fee: This card has no annual fee, which means you can start maximizing your cash back right away with no cost — as long as you avoid taking on interest charges.

0% intro APR: The Quicksilver may primarily be a cash-back card, but its relatively long 0% APR intro period also makes it a great choice for cardholders who have a large upcoming purchase they want time to pay off, or who are looking to eliminate existing debt balances.

Capital One Quicksilver potential drawbacks

Other cash-back cards may offer better rewards rates: 1.5% cash back is a great baseline for earning rewards on every purchase, but there are other flat cash-back cards that offer up to 2% on each dollar you spend.

Few added benefits: Beyond cash rewards, you won’t get many added benefits with this card. If benefits are important to you, consider rewards cards with an annual fee or travel rewards cards, which usually come with extra perks.

Best for excellent credit score: You’re most likely to get approved for this card if you have excellent credit. Other versions of the Quicksilver — as well as secured or student cards — may be better suited for those who are still building credit.

Capital One Quicksilver vs. Capital One Platinum: Which card has the best benefits?

Where can you use Capital One Quicksilver?

The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards card is a Mastercard credit card. Because Mastercard is one of the most widely-accepted payment networks, you can expect that it’ll be accepted with any in-person or online business that accepts credit card payments.

How to make a Capital One Quicksilver payment

Quicksilver card payments are due 25 days after the end of each billing cycle. As long as you pay by this due date, you won’t accrue interest on new purchases. Here are your options for making your payment:

Online payment: Set up your online account and link a bank account (payment account) which you’ll use to make your payments. You can also schedule payments or set up autopay.

Mobile payment: When you sign into your account through the Capital One mobile app, you can make a payment from your payment account via app.

In-person at Capital One branches and ATMs

Phone: You may be able to pay by phone; Capital One recommends calling the number on your card statement

How to decide if Quicksilver Cash Rewards is right for you

With a flat 1.5% cash back on every purchase you make, it’s easy to maximize Quicksilver rewards without overthinking where you’ll get the most return on the money you spend.

It may not get you the best rewards possible on every single purchase, but it can help fill any rewards gaps. If your current credit card rewards your most frequent spending — maybe a co-branded airline card for when you travel, or a cash-back card with great rewards on groceries for your supermarket spending — it probably offers a maximum 1% back on purchases that fall outside of ongoing bonus rewards categories.

But if you have a Capital One Quicksilver, you can guarantee you’ll get at least 1.5% back on every purchase.

For example, say you have a Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express that you already use frequently. That card earns 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent per year, then 1%; see rates and fees ), 6% on select U.S. streaming, 3% on transit, and 3% at U.S. gas stations. Everything else earns 1% cash back. But if you added the Quicksilver card to your wallet too, you could use it to buy everything outside of those rewards categories — as well as groceries after you meet the annual spending limit — and get at least 1.5% on every purchase, plus more on the Amex card’s bonus category spending.

As long as you don’t mind thinking about which card to use when, this can be a great way to maximize every dollar you spend.

Even without other cards in your wallet, a flat cash-back card like the Quicksilver is still a solid standalone option for simplifying your rewards.

Alternative cards to consider

Blue cash everyday® card from american express.

Why we like it: The Blue Cash Everyday is another no-annual-fee cash-back card, but it offers bonus categories to get a higher rewards rate where you spend most. You can earn 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases (each up to $6,000 spent per year, then 1%), and 1% cash back on everything else (see rates and fees).

After opening the card, you can get a $200 cash welcome bonus after spending $2,000 within the first 6 months, or about $333 per month. The Blue Cash Everyday also has a competitive intro APR offer on new purchases and balance transfers and comes with a few annual benefits to help you save more each year.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Why we like it: If you like having a Capital One card but want a bit more rewards flexibility, consider the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , a $95 annual fee travel card from the issuer. It earns Capital One Miles, which you can redeem for travel through the Capital One portal or for eligible travel expenses charged to your card.

Earn a flat 2x miles on every purchase, as well as a boosted 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. You can score a 75,000-mile welcome offer when you spend at least $4,000 within the first 3 months of account opening. The Venture card also comes with some added benefits including up to $100 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, perks on Lifestyle Collection hotel bookings, Five Star status with Hertz, and more.

Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card

Why we like it: Though its name and 1.5% cash back rewards are very similar, the QuicksilverOne differs from the Quicksilver in a few important ways. For one, it’s designated for applicants with “fair credit,” meaning you may qualify for this card even if your score isn’t high enough for the regular Quicksilver. You’ll get automatic credit line reviews after six months to determine whether you qualify for a higher credit limit.

The QuicksilverOne card has no cash welcome offer, no 0% intro APR offer, and this one does carry a $39 annual fee.

Recommended credit score : Fair to Good (580 – 740)
