  • Travel Tips

If your loved one is new to flying, then here are a few helpful tips to ensure everything goes smoothly

  • This is especially true for flying out of a major city hub. If you’re flying out of a major city and flying internationally, then you may want to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before the departure time.
  • If possible, consider bringing only a personal and a carryon for your trip and avoid checking a bag. This will save you money since most airlines charge you to check bags (some charge you for carryons as well). It will also save you time since you do not have to worry about dropping your luggage off at the gate.
  • Flights tend to dehydrate you, so do your best to hydrate well throughout the flight.
  • The mobile app allows an airline to send push notifications directly to your phone indicating you of any gate changes, delays, and more.
  • Checking into your flight online often saves you time and money. Then you can pull up your boarding pass directly on your phone without having to worry about losing your paper boarding pass ticket.
  • Some flights are hot and some are cold, I always bring an extra layer to keep me warm during a flight. If I get hot I can always take it off!

It sure was helpful when you said that you must do your best to do well throughout the flight since lights tend to dehydrate you. This is something that I will share with my parents since they mentioned that they are planning to rent a helicopter for a tour next week. They have been wanting to tour different places since last year, and they want to do their adventures before the year ends.

“I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.” – Anthony Bourdain
“Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico , and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonald’s? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria’s mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.” – Anthony Bourdain
“If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.” – Anthony Bourdain

FULFILLING LIFE AND SAFE TRAVEL QUOTES BY LAO TZU

Lao Tzu (or Laozi as he is sometimes known) wrote many of my favourite travel quotes. He was an ancient Chinese philosopher who lived sometime between the 4th and 6th Centuries BC.

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu

65 Beautiful Quotes to Wish Someone a Safe Journey

Know someone who is about to set off on holiday or go abroad? Here are 65 creative and thoughtful ways to say ‘Have a safe trip’. Copy and paste these safe journey wishes to show them that you care.

Saying goodbye to someone who’s about to depart on a journey can be difficult. Even as a writer, I often struggle to find the right words to say.

These days, I’m usually on the receiving end of goodbyes – but I’ve had to say my fair share of farewells, too.

While ‘Have a safe journey’ will sometimes suffice, quoting a simple message, a beautiful saying or even a traditional blessing is an easy way to make a farewell more meaningful and memorable.

I’ve searched books, song lyrics and inspirational sites to come up with this list of 65 safe journey wishes . You can say these out loud, or you can copy and paste your favourite into an email, use it in a caption on social media, or better still, jot it down on a hand-written note!

  • The best quotes about travelling with friends
  • The best quotes about travelling alone
  • The best quotes for travelling with family
  • Inspiring quotes about adventure & hiking
  • Beautiful sunset captions for social media

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

  • Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
  • Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.
  • Make a time to speak. If you know you’ll hear their voice when the flight lands or the train pulls in, you’ll feel much better about sending them off.
  • Remember, the person travelling is excited for the journey ahead – but they’re probably just as emotional as you!
  • Reassure them that you’ll be thinking of them. These safe journey wishes are perfect for just that.
  • It’s not only about what you say, it’s also what you do. Depending on your relationship, a warm hug or a hand on the shoulder can mean a lot.

Short and sweet safe journey wishes

These safe journey messages are thoughtful but to the point. They’re especially good for saying a quick goodbye on social media or by text message.

  • Best wishes for a safe, happy and fulfilling journey.
  • May the road be kind to you.
  • Go safe, move safe, leave safe, home safe.

A quote graphic.

This goodbye message comes from a Middle English phrase meaning ‘May you prosper’.

When NASA astronaut John Glenn made the first manned orbital flight in 1962, mission control used the word ‘Godspeed’ to wish him a safe journey.

  • Catch you on the flip side!

We often use this friendly way of saying goodbye in Australia. It comes from late-night radio DJs, who would use the phrase before they put on a vinyl record.

Listeners knew they wouldn’t hear from the DJ again until the record had played through and they had ‘flipped’ the vinyl to the B side.

  • Stay out of trouble!

A cheeky way of saying ‘Have a safe journey’, appropriate for someone you know well!

  • Smooth sailing!

First coined in the 14th Century, this phrase prophesied calm waters free from rough waves for someone who was about to set sail on the high seas.

It doesn’t just apply to water travel – nowadays, it can be used as a generic saying to wish someone a breezy journey.

  • “May the air be clear, your flight smooth, the plane ride safe, and the sky blue!” – Unknown
  • “May angels fly with you wherever you roam and guide you back safely to family and home.” – Traditional Irish blessing
  • “The more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap. Stay safe. Eat cake!” – Unknown

A quote graphic.

  • “The world is waiting for you. Good Luck. Travel Safe. Go!” – Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race)
  • “I don’t want you coming back empty-handed – I want you coming back with a head full of tall tales, absurdities, and little moments of beauty. Have a safe trip!” – Unknown

Other ways to say “safe travels” include “have a safe journey” or “travel well.” Here are 25 other ways to say that you hope travelers are safe and enjoy the journey.

Wishing family members “safe travels”

Saying goodbye to the family can evoke plenty of emotion.   You will miss the family member who is traveling but you also want to wish them well, express your love, and express your desire for them to return safely.   The following phrases are less common than “safe travels” as they express more emotion and show the closeness of the family bond.

airplane window seat view flight sky and field

All of the above phrases talk about making memories and enjoying the adventure.   They encourage family members to make the most of the opportunity but they also express love, appreciation and a sense of anticipating their return.

Other ways to say “safe travels” to a close friend

When close friends go traveling, you often wish that you could go with them.   At the same time, you want them to have the very best travel experience and come home safely so you can find out all about their adventures.   Close friends often travel together and if you’re the one that’s left behind for some reason, here are some other ways to say “safe travels” to your close friend.

Wishing a work colleague “safe travels”

When a work colleague goes traveling, what you say will depend on how well you know the person. When you know the person well, you can be more lighthearted, whereas if it’s someone you don’t know as well, your tone will be more formal.   Whether you want to wish a colleague a safe journey in person or you prefer to write a card or send an email, here are some other ways to say “safe travels” to a work colleague.

How to say it to someone who is afraid of flying

Do you know someone who is afraid of flying and about to go on a flight? Many people have different levels of fear when it comes to flying and some are unable to fly at all because they have such a big fear of flying.   A fair number of people have at least some trepidation when it comes to flying. Helping to cheer them up with some humor or reminding them that flying is safe can help them to overcome their fear and set off in good spirits.   Here are some other ways to say “safe travels” and let those afraid of flying know you are thinking about them and you wish them well for the trip.

Wishing someone traveling in a pandemic “safe travels”

One of the main reasons we travel is because we love to explore and have new experiences.   During a pandemic with many countries around the world in lockdown, travel of all kinds has been impacted and people are less willing to travel.   As people are beginning to travel again, they are experiencing some changes. There are all the safety protocols they have to follow that can be tiresome. However, there are far fewer people traveling, so that has certain advantages.   Expressing “safe travels” to someone traveling in a pandemic carries more of a sense of urgency than when you are just wishing someone a pleasant journey. However, people also tend to joke a little as a way of coping in difficult circumstances.   Here are some ways to say “safe travels” during a pandemic, It is often better to emphasize the positive rather than the negative aspects of traveling.

A final word

Travel used to be a perilous affair full of danger but today, the most you usually have to deal with is delays, lost luggage, obnoxious fellow passengers or turbulence.   “Safe travels” is a term that’s evolved to mean more for the trip itself than the transport to get there.   As you can see from the examples above, there are many other ways to say “safe travels.”

I hope you enjoy the safe journey wishes in this post!

Safe and enriching travels, my friend.

It was about 5 years ago that one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met sent that message to me.

At the time, I was just about to embark on a trip around New Zealand.

I set off with those beautiful words ringing in my ears, and they’ve stayed with me ever since.

For me, they provide the perfect example of safe journey wishes, and how the right message can have such a powerful effect on a traveller.

I mean, travelling is massively exciting, but it’s scary too.

Hearts race as the departure date looms; fear sets in as you imagine leaving home and parting ways with friends and family.

Receiving well-wishes from the people that matter most (and even from those you barely know) can make a big difference.

Those words provide reassurance, encouragement, and support.

The simplest message can provide just the dose of courage required to take that leap into the unknown.

You carry it with you into the adventures to come, packing them into your mental backpack to help you through any challenges ahead.

Are you wondering what to wish someone who’s about to go travelling?

Well, there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from the internet! I’ve put together a long list of safe and happy journey wishes that I hope will help out.

Sound good? Keep reading!

How to Actually Stay Safe While Traveling

Being able to wish someone safe travels is great, but there’s even better value in being able to tell them  how to  travel safely. Here are a few things you can do, or even remind those you love to do, before traveling.

  • Copy all important documents, like passports, and send email copies to yourself . This way, if anything is lost, you have a fail-safe to access and replace that information.
  • Take out enough cash to last 1-2 days in the destination you’re traveling to, but not more. A lot of people take their entire trip budget in cash, only to learn that they get hammered in currency exchange fees at the airport. You want to have cash in the destination currency when you land for cabs, groceries, and essentials in case you have issues with your credit and debit cards, but most ATMs overseas don’t charge fees. You’ll save money if you only take the cash you need .
  • Make sure someone has the contact information of where you’ll be staying. This is a truism that goes back decades, but traveling safely is about making sure someone can reach you in case of an emergency.
  • Safeguard your hotel room. If you want turn-down service, put your key valuables into a locked box or safe. Don’t just leave them out. We, of course, want to assume that hotel staff is honest, but there’s no reason to be on the short end of a poor assumption.
  • Be careful about WiFi. Make sure to pay bills online before you go, and try to avoid making online transactions over public WiFi when abroad. Networks that are unfamiliar to you shouldn’t see your personal information, and you’re at great risk when they do.

11 Better Ways To Say “Safe Travels”

“Safe travels” is a polite way to wish somebody well on their upcoming journey. However, there are better ways to be polite and reassuring to your friends when they’re ready to go somewhere (often by plane). This article will share the best alternatives for such a case with you.

What Can I Say Instead Of “Safe Travels”?

There are plenty of ways to use “safe travels” in more exciting manners. You should check out one of the following:

  • Have a good flight
  • Happy landings
  • See you on the other side
  • Let me know when you arrive safely
  • Stay safe out there
  • Enjoy your trip
  • Have a relaxing time away
  • Happy travels

Better Ways To Say Safe Travels

The preferred version is “be safe” because it keeps it simple. It’s a common phrase we use when we want to wish someone well, and we don’t want them to come across any complications or dangers that might occur if they’re not “careful” enough.

“Be safe” is great to show we care about someone. It lets them know that we worry about them, and we want them to stay “safe” no matter what happens. It works regardless of the method of transport for the journey as well, which makes it a good general phrase.

It’s common for family members to use the phrase “ be safe ” when seeing each other off. This shows that there is a lot of love behind the phrase and that it works well to show how much you care about someone’s wellbeing.

Here are a few ways we might be able to use this phrase:

  • Be safe out there. I know you like to find trouble, but for once, I’d love it if you looked after yourself!
  • Be safe on your way out! I would love to hear from you and see the pictures of all the things you get up to.
  • Don’t forget to message me when you get there! Be safe, and I love you!

“Safe trip” is a simple phrase we can use to make sure someone knows we care. Using words like “safe” reminds people that we worry about them. Even if we are not physically there with them, we hope they are “safe” and do not get into trouble.

This phrase works well regardless of the trip that someone is taking. It could be a long-distance or a short-distance trip. Likewise, it could be by car, plane, boat, or something else entirely!

This phrase works in the following situations:

  • Safe trip, Yuri! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be thinking about me while you’re away.
  • Safe trip back to your hometown, then. Let me know when you get there safely.
  • Safe trip, old friend. I’ll see you again whenever you’re next in town!

Have A Good Flight

“Have a good flight” is appropriate to use when someone is going to get on a plane . We use “flight” here to be specific, which helps us to show that we know what someone is getting up to and what they’re likely going to expect from their journey.

We can use this phrase in the following ways:

  • Have a good flight! I’m sure you can get all the food and drink you want on there!
  • Have a good flight, and don’t forget to let me know when you land safely!
  • Have a good flight! There’s nothing to worry about, and you know it’ll all be okay!

Happy Landings

“Happy landings” specifically highlights the “landing” portion of a journey. It works well when someone is going on a plane, and we want them to be “happy” throughout the course of their journey.

Here are a few useful examples of how this one works:

  • Happy landings, fella! Don’t forget that they really like their tips out there when you’re dining out!
  • Happy landings, then! I’ll miss you every second, so I want you to send me all the photos you can!
  • Happy landings! Don’t forget to explore some of the local scenery!

See You On The Other Side

“See you on the other side” is an informal idiom that works well in many cases. We can do it when we know that someone will be returning to see us again soon. “The other side” indicates the place where we will be staying while they go on a journey.

Check out some of these examples to see how it looks:

  • See you on the other side, then! Have a great holiday!
  • Have a great time away, Fred! See you on the other side!
  • I’ll be here waiting for you as always! See you on the other side!

Let Me Know When You Arrive Safely

“Let me know when you arrive safely” is a calm way to let someone know that you are worried. When they arrive at their destination, we can ask them to “message” us to ease our minds and show us that they are thinking about us even after their journey.

We could also use a phrase like “text me when” instead of “let me know when.” If we want to be more specific about the manner of messaging, this phrase works just as well.

This phrase works well in the following ways:

  • Let me know when you arrive safely, please! You know how much I worry about you while I’m not around!
  • Text me when you arrive safely, please! I want to know just how much fun you’re getting up to.
  • Let me know when you arrive safely! I’ll miss you every second that you’re away.

Stay Safe Out There

“Stay safe out there” is a good way to show that you care about someone. “Stay safe” helps to let them know that you’ll be looking out for them and that you want them to explore, but in a reasonable way that won’t cause them harm.

We typically use this phrase when someone is going on a long-distance journey. “Out there” is a good indicator of that.

Check out some of these examples to see how it works:

  • Stay safe out there, then! I know you’ll make all the best choices while you’re away.
  • Stay safe out there! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be having an absolutely adoring time!
  • Stay safe out there. You never know what hijinx you might get into, so make sure you text me!

Enjoy Your Trip

“Enjoy your trip” is a simple way to show someone that you care. It helps to let them know that we want them to “enjoy” themselves. While trips can sometimes be boring (especially long-distance ones), we want people to feel like they can still have fun.

This simple phrase works as follows :

  • Enjoy your trip, Michael! Let me know when you arrive so we can discuss the adventure more!
  • Enjoy your trip! Don’t forget to immerse yourself in the local culture when you get there!
  • Enjoy your trip! I expect you to be fluent in German by the time you get back, okay?

Have A Relaxing Time Away

“Have a relaxing time away” works well in many cases. It’s most effective when we know that someone is inclined to worry (whether about the journey or the place they’re going). If we want to calm them down, this phrase works well.

These examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Have a relaxing time away! Remember, you don’t need to worry about a thing when you get on that plane!
  • Have a relaxing time away! If anyone deserves it, it is most certainly you!
  • Have a relaxing time away! I’m going to miss you, but I know you’ll be back in no time!

Happy Travels

“Happy travels” works really well when we want people to feel “happy” on their journey. “Travels” can refer to any method of transport, but the idea is that they’ll be spending a long time getting from point A to point B, and we want them to feel “happy.”

Perhaps one of these examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Happy travels, mate! I know you’ll love it over there in Australia, but you must tell me all about it.
  • Happy travels, Sue! I’ll miss you, so don’t forget to write to me every day about what you do.
  • Happy travels, Dan! Thank you for coming to see me again, and I’ll see you again soon, yeah?

“Bon voyage” is a great way to wish someone well before they go on an adventure. It’s French (and Italian), and it means “good journey.” It’s a commonly-used exclamation in English when we want to wish somebody well for something they’re going to do.

It’s also comforting because it shows that we do not wish any problems to come their way when they’re on their journey.

  • Bon voyage, my little friend! I’ll see you again when you return!
  • Bon voyage, then! I will miss you, but I hope you get a chance to text me a bunch when you get there!
  • Bon voyage! I love you so much, and I’ll definitely miss you while you’re away.

You can use it regardless of the connection you have with the recipient.

For instance, you can use it when colleagues book time off . It shows you’re happy to see them getting away from work and can’t wait to hear about what they get up to on their return.

Here’s a useful example to show you how it works:

Dear Maria, I have contacted our client to see what they want to do with the system. I’ll be in touch when they reply. See you after your travels , Ben White

8. Best Wishes on Your Travels

Generally, “best wishes” is used as a formal email closer. It’s similar to writing things like “all the best” and “best regards.”

You can extend it, though. Add “on your travels” to create “best wishes on your travels.”

This is a very polite and friendly way to close an email. It shows you hope someone makes the most of their time off .

Check out this example if you still need help:

Dear Mitchell, This is the only time I can arrange the meeting. Don’t worry; I’ll provide notes for you on your return. Best wishes on your travels , George Marshland

9. Make the Most of Your Travels

It’s all too easy to get caught up at work and let stress consume you. It then becomes easy to also forget to take the time to enjoy yourself when you book time off work.

However, with “make the most of your travels,” this problem tends to disappear. It’s a great way to close a friendly and formal email .

We recommend using it when you want someone to have the best vacation . It reminds them to enjoy themselves because they won’t be at work for a few days.

Perhaps this email sample will also help you:

Dear Bryan, Opportunities like this don’t come up often. I’ll let you rest for now, but we’re going to need to work together when you return. Make the most of your travels , Melanie Beau

10. Safe Journey

The problem with “safe travels” is that “travels” makes it a little too conversational. You can eliminate this issue by switching “travels” with “journey.”

Now, “safe journey” is a more professional alternative. It helps you to sound more polite and respectful in an email and is a better way to say “safe travels.”

You can use it when emailing employees who are planning a trip. It’s highly effective and allows you to retain a formal tone.

Here’s a great email example to help you with it:

Dear Stuart, Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate you’re busy trying to sort out your trip, but I’ll have a few answers for you when you return. Safe journey , April O’Neill

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

hope safe trip

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Help! I’ve Been Lying to My Wife About What I Do on Trips.

I know it wouldn’t be a good look if i got caught..

Dear Prudence is Slate’s advice column. For this edition, Shannon Palus ,  Slate’s features editor,   will be filling in as Prudie.  Submit questions here.   (It’s anonymous!)

Dear Prudence,

We live in a high-cost-of-living area. When we had our daughter three years ago, my wife was determined to stay at home so I had to take another position in the company. It requires me to do a lot of international travel. It has been a huge issue in our marriage. My wife expects me to jump right into helping around the house and parenting our daughter as soon as I get off the plane. Most of the time I am jet lagged to the point of being a zombie.

My wife rejects any of my solutions like getting a part-time house cleaner or a meal prep service. This is negatively affecting my health. I dread going home more than I do going through the airport. I have started lying and adding an extra day or two to my trips so I can just check into a hotel here and relax. It has been helping, but I hate lying. I know it would not look good for me if and when my wife finds out, but I need this downtime. I really wish my wife kept her job even if it meant paying most of her salary for daycare. I hate this and the stress of being on one income. What else can I do? My wife wants to have another child now and I am just dreading the additional stress that would bring.

—Stressed in Seattle

Dear Stressed in Seattle,

You need to be clear about what you need from your wife. You are willing to keep your high-travel, high-stress, (presumably) higher-pay position—but you can’t jump into childcare right after a trip, and you need time to decompress. Or, you need to look for a lower-paying job, that will involve less travel, and less stress, and allow you to feel like you can hop into childcare as-needed—but will require something else to give.

You can’t solve this problem yourself, you have to work with your wife. Your wife, who also has needs! Your wife isn’t asking you to take over childcare as soon as you get home out of some arbitrary expectation; caring for a child solo is hard work and she is exhausted by the end of your trip, too. It’s hard to ease that burden with a small amount of help from a house cleaner or a meal-prep service.

It sounds like the main problem here, though, is that there is too much work, generally, and not enough money to cover a life you both would feel relaxed and content in. This is a problem you are not alone in—the cost of having a family right now in America is very high. It is crazy-making. You’ve gone the route of making more money, and it hasn’t worked. What about lowering your expenses? I know moving is a huge undertaking, but it’s worth considering what you could gain by going somewhere lower-cost, even if it can’t happen right away.

All-in-all, this isn’t something that resolves itself overnight. One thing that will help in the long run is that you will not have a very young child forever, and your daughter will gain more independence and need less care, eventually. Sometimes life is just about hanging in there until things naturally shift. (Just don’t have another kid yet. Or do! But only if you both wind up in a place where you’re excited about it).

In the short term, tell your wife you need some hotel vacation time, and then take that time without sneaking it. It sounds like that is helping.

Get Even More Advice From the Dear Prudence Podcast

Do you have any advice for someone feeling “out of sight, out of mind” with family? I’m the only person in my family to ever move out of our town, which was the right decision for me overall—except for the fact that I feel so distant from my family now. They have never once visited me in 10 years, declining even to come to my wedding six years ago. (My mom wasn’t well enough to fly and I guess everyone else felt like if she couldn’t be there, no one was going.) They don’t call, and in general, all of us are posting very little on social media these days.

I call to catch up every few months with my siblings, parents, and aunts, and make sure they always know there’s an open and eager invitation to come see me. I visit home at least once a year and our visits are great! We have a ton of fun and talk about how we wish we could see each other more often. I invite them to give me a call sometime to catch up, or to come out and let me be their tour guide in my beautiful state. Money and time off are always factors, but most of the people in mind do a few outings a year by road trip and plane—like an eight-hour drive to the next state over or a six-hour flight to Mexico, compared to the four-hour flight out here. I can’t really compete with a resort vacation, but my area is also a vacation destination full of activities I know they love.

I’m not sure there’s anything more I can say to inspire them to visit or call. I know they love me, but this is a pretty entrenched pattern at this point. Most of my friends here are from other states and their families visit several times a year, and it makes me really sad that I don’t have that kind of relationship with my family. I’ve talked to my therapist about it, but I just don’t know how to move on from wanting something that probably isn’t going to happen.

—At Sea in Colorado

Dear At Sea in Colorado,

You seem somewhat lighthearted about this whole thing. I know you know that this is frustrating and sad. But overall…I get the vibe of someone running an amenity on a cruise ship who is just so bummed that they cannot get any guests to hang out in their awesome water slide area!

Are you, perhaps, angry with your family? That would be very reasonable. Ten years is a long time. A wedding is a big deal. Picking up the phone is free. I am wondering if you’ve really taken the time to feel your feelings on this issue, and to share those feelings with your family, in service of keeping things “a ton of fun” when you do get to see them. Not attending your wedding —I would feel devastated.

You can’t make them do anything, but you can tell them how their pattern of behavior is affecting you. Instead of trying to “inspire” change, tell them how their choices make you feel. Ask for change.

Regardless of whether they do alter their behavior, you have options. Maybe you want to think about moving closer to them—family, for all the giant flaws, is important. Or maybe you want to live in beautiful Colorado, alongside the sadness at the fact that you have a family that is like this. It is a painful situation. Don’t stuff that down. Ironically, letting it out a little more might be what allows you some peace.

How to Get Advice From Prudie

Submit your questions anonymously here . (Questions may be edited for publication.)

A few years ago, I enjoyed being in a large group of friends who shared a lot of the same interests and would socialize frequently. In addition to regularly socializing at casual events, we traveled together several times per year. Three years ago, it was revealed that two of our friends, who were married to other people, had been having a long-term affair. One of the couples has since divorced (Amber and Ben), and the other couple stayed together (Chris and Delia).

Amber, Ben, and Delia cannot be in the same room as each other, so all of our traditions have been impacted. We now have to decide who to include and who to exclude from every trip and every social event. I am particularly conscious of Amber’s feelings because she is not at fault. I am currently planning a trip for a milestone birthday and I have invited Delia. I don’t agree with what she did and the fact that she has shown little remorse, but we have a lot in common and she is my oldest friend.

How should I deal with this situation (and other future similar situations) since I cannot invite my other two friends? I was discussing this trip with Amber and a group of friends, and I had to privately tell Amber afterward that Delia was attending the trip. It got really awkward and I felt bad. When I think too much about the situation, I feel angry at Delia for fracturing our group of friends (on top of splitting up a marriage and doing damage to her own family unit), and I feel like I made a mistake inviting Delia on the trip. I want Amber to know that I value our friendship even though I am still friends with Delia.

—Fractured Friendships

Dear Fractured Friendships,

Smaller hangouts are the answer here. Your old traditions have been blown up, through no fault of your own, and you can’t prevent awkwardness or hard feelings when you exclude people. I kind of want to tell you to just keep inviting everyone and let them work it out, but that doesn’t sound fun for you. Right now, you can show Amber you value her friendship by planning something one-on-one with her—a spa day or a weekend away with her and another friend six months from now, and maybe even someone outside the original friend group. Try some new configurations, and try not to worry too much about the “what ifs” regarding Delilah’s choices and behaviors that do not directly involve you. Martial troubles and divorce—it happens.

Classic Prudie

Chara” was my foster child from when she was 10 until she aged out of the system, although not consistently. Her mother was mentally ill, her grandmother was sick, and times were tough. She is 23 now. My son “Asher” is around the same age. The pair of them were thick as thieves and the only time Chara ever got in trouble was when my son got bullied and Chara went after the other kids, fists flying. I consider Chara my daughter. Asher announced that he is in love with Chara.

Chris Kerr was 12 when he first observed a deathbed vision. His memory of that summer in 1974 is blurred, but not the sense of mystery he felt at the bedside of his dying father. Throughout Kerr’s childhood in Toronto, his father, a surgeon, was too busy to spend much time with his son, except for an annual fishing trip they took, just the two of them, to the Canadian wilderness. Gaunt and weakened by cancer at 42, his father reached for the buttons on Kerr’s shirt, fiddled with them and said something about getting ready to catch the plane to their cabin in the woods. “I knew intuitively, I knew wherever he was, must be a good place because we were going fishing,” Kerr told me.

Kerr now calls what he witnessed an end-of-life vision. His father wasn’t delusional, he believes. His mind was taking him to a time and place where he and his son could be together, in the wilds of northern Canada.

Kerr followed his father into medicine, and in the last 10 years he has hired a permanent research team that expanded studies on deathbed visions to include interviews with patients receiving hospice care at home and with their families, deepening researchers’ understanding of the variety and profundity of these visions.

New York state and city officials urge caution if traveling during solar eclipse

State transportation officials suggested new yorkers leave early to view the eclipse, be prepared for traffic, and follow the law by not parking on the shoulder, by nbc new york staff • published april 7, 2024 • updated on april 8, 2024 at 8:23 am.

New York City and Empire State officials are cautioning about the challenges of traveling Monday afternoon during the solar eclipse .

The greater New York City area will see a partial solar eclipse (not a total one), but will have nearly 90% of coverage of the sun. The strongest effects will start around 3 p.m. and last an hour.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management warned "New Yorkers are advised to take caution while traveling due to the sudden lack of light."

Gov. Kathy Hochul said a large number of visitors are expected to New York state and traffic could be more congested than normal.

“New York is prepared to welcome visitors from around the world to view the total solar eclipse on April 8, and I urge all travelers to be prepared for a high volume of traffic,” Hochul said.

The state Department of Transportation said extra HELP and tow trucks will be on the roads, but New Yorkers should take precautions before heading out to view the eclipse.

"I urge all New Yorkers to enjoy this natural wonder - but do so, safely," Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said in a statement. " Leave early, be prepared for traffic delays - bring extra food, water and blankets and don’t forget your eclipse viewing glasses. Please remember to not park on the shoulders of the road, and most importantly, pack your patience."

It's very important to not look directly at the sun during even the partial eclipse and to only use certified viewing glasses.

The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse

hope safe trip

The 2024 solar eclipse will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the celestial event?

We know Americans should wear certified eclipse glasses when looking directly at the eclipse. And millions of Americans are in the eclipse's path of totality , the moment that occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's light from reaching us. During totality, the eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. If you plan to drive during this time, you may not only have to contend with traffic , but need to take steps to stay safe.

Here's what to know about driving during the eclipse.

Where to get free solar eclipse glasses: Libraries, Warby Parker and more giving glasses away

Is it safe to drive during an eclipse?

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.

"Anyone operating a vehicle should not be attempting to look up at the sky during the eclipse – their eyes should be on the road," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," Diaz said.

Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving

It should go without saying, but authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing eclipse glasses .

The Missouri and Texas departments of transportation are both advising drivers to not wear eclipse glasses during the natural phenomenon and to focus on the road.

"Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving," reads a list of safety tips from the Texas department. Thousands people are expected to drive to towns along the path of totality, including Dallas, ahead of the eclipse.

Several state transportation departments  released similar warnings  ahead of the 2017 total solar eclipse. Wyoming's, for example, warned people traveling to the state about how they wouldn't be able to see the road with solar eclipse glasses on.

"When the glasses are worn, a person shouldn’t be able to see anything except the solar eclipse, which is why it is unsafe for a person to wear them when driving," the warning reads.

"Eclipse glasses are for eclipse viewing, not driving. They shouldn’t be treated like normal sunglasses," Diaz said.

Months of preparation around the state have led to a day when thousands are expected to flock to Indiana . Several cities are in the path of today's total solar eclipse.

Rest stop parks at capacity

Indiana State Police Public information officer Sgt. John Perrine posted on X/Twitter that rest parks on state interstates on the path of totality are reaching capacity. "INDOT Will be closing off the rest parts once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse," his post said.

UPDATE: Traffic picking up on Indiana highways

According to INDOT, traffic started picking up along the path of totality on Indiana highways in the late morning.

Light traffic across Indiana on morning before eclipse

With schools and other locations closed, things started off slow. In Indianapolis, traffic was light downtown, with more traffic near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In Bloomington, streets were clearer than usual during the morning commute hours, with plenty of parking open on the downtown square. No traffic issues were reported on state highways near Evansville as of 7:50 a.m., according to the Courier & Press live coverage blog .
