Ciampino is Rome’s second airport, and the destination of choice for many of Europe’s low-cost airlines. It is less well served by transport links than Fiumicino Airport . But it is closer to Rome city center than Fiumicino. We explore your options.

Arriving after 11pm? How to get to and from Ciampino airport at night >

Getting into Rome city from Ciampino Airport:

Welcome pickups.

Halfway between a taxi and a limo, this service combines all the benefits of a private transfer, with modern technology .

You get the details in advance of your named driver who will wait for your flight in the airport with your name on a card, speaks fluent English, is a local, and can provide various recommendations and insights into the city.

The price is €14 more than the official taxi price of €30 but you can pay online before you leave, someone who speaks English is guaranteed to be there to meet you, there are no hidden extras, and there is no worry about being ripped off.

Bus & Metro

Two new bus lines were laid on in 2017 and 2018 that connect Ciampino airport with the Metro system. You can use either of them with a regular €1.50 Rome public transport ticket , which can be bought from the Chef Express café in the terminal building. This means that if you’re not in a hurry, you can travel the entire way from CIA to your hotel for only €1.50!

  • The 720 bus leaves stand 4 outside the arrivals hall every twenty minutes. This connects with Laureatina, the southernmost end of Linea B of the Metro system.
  • The 520 bus leaves stand 4 and connects with the metro station at Cinecittà. This is on the A line of the metro.

Both lines operate between 5.30 am and 11.30 pm (see what to do if you arrive into CIA at night ). Depending on your destination, these bus/metro combos will get you pretty much wherever you want to go. For most tourist destinations (Spanish Steps, Barberini, Vatican), the 520/Linea A route will be the best.

To buy a regular public transport ticket in Ciampino, there is only one place to get them, namely the Rome Tourist Information desk in the arrivals hall, which is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm. If it’s shut, don’t despair – you can download the “MyCicero” app and buy a ticket on your phone.

Train & bus

Unfortunately the train from Ciampino is not the best option. The nearest train does not leave from the airport: you need to travel three or four miles to Ciampino town center, where you can connect. The train, while relatively fast, is also infrequent. It arrives into Termini station. Local buses to the station from the airport leave around every half hour, take 15 minutes, and cost around €1. A taxi to the station will cost around €10. Train tickets are only €1.50.

Like at Fiumicino , Taxis are meant to charge a set fee for anywhere in the city. This is a reasonable €30 per car for up to four passengers including baggage, to destinations within the Aurelian Walls (essentially the city center). However as always, there are extras such as out-of-hours charges, baggage charges, that can increase the price – and drivers may often try to add fake ‘fees’ on, or rely on you not knowing what the official set charge is.

Ciampino is served by several coach companies. Your low-cost carrier will sell you a ticket on the plane for around €4-5 each way, which will usually save you about €2 off the price of a ticket sold at the door of the coach, but it does mean you have to wait for the specific coach company that the airline sold you, and can’t jump on the next available coach.

There are fewer companies operating at Ciampino than at Fiumicino , and as a consequence when several flights at the same time they can be a little oversubscribed. They take less time to get to the city center than from Fiumicino – between 30-40 minutes – and also end up at Termini Station.

How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome City Center

How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome City Center

Ciampino – G. B. Pastine International Airport  (  CIA),  or Rome Ciampino Airport , is the secondary international airport of Rome after Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino Airport.

It is a joint civilian, commercial and military airport. The airport is a base for Ryanair and general aviation traffic. Moreover, a small railway station connects the airport and the train station in Rome’s city center at a distance of 12 km (7.5 miles). Also, it is possible to find many buses that go to/from the city center from Ciampino.

Private Transfer from/to Ciampino Airport

  • Phone : +39 349 639 70 19
  • Price: 55 euro
  • Website: www.rome4.us

Of course, the most comfortable and secure way to get from/to the airport is a private transfer among all transport options. You can order a private transfer from our friend’s website, rome4.us. The driver, Sergio, will meet you at the airport and you will be able to reach any point in the city quickly and comfortably.

Getting to/from Ciampino Airport by Bus

You can buy a ticket online in advance, so you will not have to wait in a queue before your departure. Moreover, online tickets are 1-2 euros cheaper. Of course, you have the option to buy a ticket for a bus that leaves sooner directly at the bus stop. However, it is a good idea to buy the return bus ticket in advance, so you can be sure that you will not be late for your flight. On average, it takes 35-45 minutes to get to Rome Termini station from the airport in normal traffic conditions by bus. There are buses from Ciampino that go to:

  • Ciampino railway station, where you can get a train to Rome’s center (Termini station)
  • Directly to/from Termini station

Technically, there is a fixed price from Ciampino airport to the city center or vice versa, 31 euros (including luggage), and drivers cannot charge more. However, there can be surprises, and you should better clarify the price before taking a taxi .

The fixed cost for the taxi fares from Fiumicino airport is valid only to  Rome Aurelian Walls  (The historical center of Rome).
  • From Tiburtina station to Ciampino by taxi: 35 euro
  • From Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) to Ciampino airport: 50 euro
Don’t forget that all official taxis of Rome are white colored and carry a “TAXI” sign on the car roof

Be careful; sometimes, taxi drivers can easily take advantage of tourists. You always have to pay attention to the details, such as there are prefixed rates, which you can read at the cab parking at the airport; to get more clients, drivers may try to go very fast, so don’t be afraid to ask them to slow down.

Going from Ciampino airport to Rome’s city center by train is not the fastest and most comfortable option. The nearest train station to the airport is Ciampino Citta. You can go from the airport to the station by bus and vice versa.

  • A ticket from Ciampino Citta station to Ciampino airport costs 1 euro, and the bus goes every 30min
  • A train ticket to Ciampino Citta costs 1.50 euros (if you are going from Termini station). Also, you can take the metro train system that leaves Termini station for Ciampino Citta.

You can purchase your train tickets at the red kiosks at the train station.

While some rideshare services will take you to your hotel, others provide transportation to the city centre. Please choose the type that best suits your needs.

  • Journey approximately 30 - 40 minutes

TAXI FROM CIAMPINO AIRPORT TO ROME

A taxi, while not the most budget-conscious, will be the fastest and most convenient way to get to your hotel in the city center from Ciampino Airport for a fixed fee.

You’ll know the taxi is from an official company when you can see the fixed rates on the car’s doors.

It costs €30 for up to four people and their luggage to get into Rome.

  • €30 per vehicle

This service is ideal for families who want to save on transferring to Rome, as the price per traveler goes down with more people.

It also saves hassle if your accommodations are not close to Rome Termini.

Note : Never get into a taxi without asking the driver how much it will cost first.

Keep in mind that the fixed fare no longer applies if you’re traveling somewhere outside the Rome city walls.

TIP: The Rome Airport Taxi & Travel Card covers the cost of a taxi from Ciampino Airport to the city centre in addition to a 3-day public transportation pass.

UBER/MYTAXI FROM CIAMPINO AIRPORT TO ROME

If you’re arriving late at night or at an odd time, don’t want to wait for the bus, or just want to use a familiar ride-hailing app, Uber Black and MyTaxi are available to use.

This is also a good option for riders who are staying further away from Rome Termini station.

  • €46 and up per ride
  • Journey approximately 40 minutes
  • €35 and up per ride

Travelers who are used to services like Uber and MyTaxi generally report that the prompt service and lack of hassle finding their hotel are worth the extra money over transferring to Rome Termini and using public transportation from there.

Note: Keep in mind that Uber Black is the only Uber service running in Rome. With surge pricing, this could bump up your estimated costs depending on the time of day.

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome: 4 best ways

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome city centre: practical guide to use bus, train or taxi to get from Ciampino to your hotel.

Ciampino airport is the smallest of the two Rome airports and came onto the international stage when Ryanair elected it as its Rome base in the early 2000s.

Becoming the airport of choice of low cost airlines meant that the little Ciampino airstrip turned into a busy airport almost overnight, with flights coming in and out of it from all over Italy and Europe.

Ciampino now serves a large  number of flights and see a high number of travelers stomping its corridors each day.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

I would love to to say that the airport structure rose to the challenge posed by this new role, and that Ciampino airport became a large and modern airport meeting all traveler’s need. However, this is not quite the case!

While Ciampino does have more services than before, including small food joints and newsagents, it is very much a low coast airline/ secondary airport so don’t expect luxury.

I use Ciampino often: it is an excellent choice if you are flying into Rome from smaller airport in Italy and Europe and it is perfect if are staying in the Southern part of the city or you land in Rome to drive elsewhere.

In this guide, I am going to share the best ways to get from Ciampino into Rome city center.

4 ways to get from Ciampino airport to Rome at a glance

There are four ways to get from Ciampino Airport to Rome: shuttle bus, bus+train, taxi, private transfer.

All have pros and cons and they come in at very different price points. This is an overview:

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome city center by shuttle bus

The easiest and cheapest way to get from Ciampino airport to Rome is by bus.

The airport is served by several bus companies:

Terravision buses connect the airport directly to Termini station.

Tickets can be bought at the bus door for 6 Euro cash or you can book in advance online at the same price (recommended).

The service runs in conjunction with the flight schedule between 08:15  and 00:15.

>>> Get Terravision Shuttle Bus Tickets in Advance here <<<

Sit buses offer an equivalent service  to those of Terravision and the cost is the same too: 6 euro. They run from 07.45 to 23.15.

>>> You can get your shuttle ticket quickly and safely here <<<

These two bus companies stop immediately outside the Ciampino Arrivals terminal and are, in my experience, excellent.

You will see the buses at their stands as you leave the airport: space for luggage is provided in the hold of the bus and the journey has no intermediate stops.

Other buses (manged by Cotral and Schiaffini)   connect the airport with Termini and metro station Anagnina.

The bus from Termini runs 05:30 and 22:50 and costs 3.90 Euro while the one from Anagnina run from 06:10 to 22:40 and costs 1,20 Euro.

Once in Rome Termini or Anagnina, you can use the local buses to get to your accommodation. Find how to uses buses and metro in Rome in our Rome public transport guide

Taxis from Ciampino to Rome

Getting a taxi from Ciampino to Rome is pretty straightforward.

Taxi fares in Rome

Ciampino is a small airport and taxis stop just outside the terminal in a designated area, which is guarded by an electronic barrier that only allows authorised vehicles to enter.

This barrier means only official taxis can come in – they are white, with ‘taxi’ written on top.

As you exit the terminal, you will see the taxi area in front of you, immediately to your right.

The taxi service into Rome city center operates on a flat fee system (currently 31 Euro): signs informing you of the fare are well visible at the taxi stand.

Currently, official taxi fares from Ciampino are:

  • From Ciampino Airport to inside the Aurelian Walls: € 31,00
  • From Ciampino airport to Tiburtina Station: € 35,00
  • From Ciampino Airport to Stazione Ostiense: € 30,00

You can check official taxi fares in Rome and a handy map here .

Need to know : the flat fees applies to destination inside the Aurelian Walls, which are ancient walls still standing around large parts of Rome city center. The designation ‘inside the Aurelian Walls’ indicated most of the city center and some areas near the Vatican. Be advised that not everywhere in Rome is within this area!

Make sure you double check the cost with your driver, pointing to the map, that the fee applies to your destination.

Taxi scams in Rome Ciampino

Taxi scams are a lot less common than many expect. However, it is good to know how taxis operate in Rome, so you can be sure of what service you are entitled to and for how much.

The main things to remember about taxis from Ciampino to Rome are:

Official taxis are white, with the ‘taxi’ sign on top. Both outside and inside, there are official badges and price lists, so you always know what the fares are.

The flat fee applies to trips from Ciampino Airport to destinations inside the Aurelian Walls. All other destinations are by meter.

The meter is at the front of the dashboard, beside the driver, well visible to the passenger. Always ensure it is on. Refuse rides from drivers who claim the meter ‘doesn’t work’.

Do not make ‘deals’ with drivers and do not ask them how much a metered ride is. The only flat fee is from the airport to inside the Aurelian Wall, all the rest is by meter and price can only be finalised on arrival, once the ride is over. Asking how much a ride is opens up the risk of them offering an off meter prices, usually much more expensive that the correct one.

It is your legal right to pay by credit card. It is common for taxi drivers to prefer cash so, to avoid unpleasant discussions, make sure before you board they accept cards. If they do not, I usually take it as a sign I should get the next driver!

Important note if traveling with children: the use of car seats in taxis is not compulsory and taxis do not provide them. If traveling with a young child, bring your own!

Going from Ciampino to Rome with the Ciampino Airlink

The cheapest way to get from Ciampino Airport to Rome is by catching the Ciampino Airlink.

sing in Ciampino airport for the Ciampino Airlink

This is a service that allows you to get from Ciampino to Rome Termini at a fraction of the price of others however, it is also a little more laborious as it requires you to catch a local bus to the Ciampino Train Station and then catch the main train line to Termini.

If this extra passage is not a problem for you, catching the Ciampino Airlink is reasonably easy.

On arrival to the luggage hall of Ciampino, you will see large red signs with directions and cost – the bus leaved the airport approximately every 20 minutes and the journey overall takes about an hour.

This is the cheapest way to get from Ciampino to Rome: kids go free.

Booking a private transport from Ciampino Airport to your hotel in Rome

If you are one a more comfortable budget, then the easiest way to get from Ciampino airport to Rome is by booking a private transfer.

There are several companies offering this service and you can choose between different types of cars and levels of comfort.

The price varies in relation to the type of car selected. I highly recommend you select your service in advance and do not rely on offers you may receive at the airport.

Some companies you can consider and book before your trip are (check exact price and reviews at the following links):

How to Get from Ciampino Airport to Rome City Centre

L'aeroporto di Roma Ciampino

Ciampino is Rome’s second airport and only caters to Europenean, budjet airlines:  Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizzair. Being rather small (only 16  gates) Ciampino doesn’t offer much in terms of amenieties so here you won’t be able to kill the time shopping or having a drink.

But on the bright site it’s dead easy to get around and much closer to Rome (15 km) then Fiumicino.

If you’re flying into Ciampino you’ll have quite a few options for getting to Rome. Let’s what those options are.

Although the station is located outside the airport, from Ciampino you can easily reach Rome’s city centre by train.

Ciampino Airlink is a single ticket that includes the bus from the airport to the train station and the train journey from Ciampino to Roma Termini Station. The cost of the ticket is € 2.70.

The bus stops right outside the airport terminal and it’s easily recognizible: it’s red with a big, white Ciampino Airlink sign on the side.

You can check the timetable and yout  buy tickets on the Railway official website . You will need to indicate the station you’re departing from (Ciampino Aeroporto ) and the one you’re going to (Roma Termini).

While the bus is specifically dedicated to airport transfer service, the train is a regional, commuting line so at peak hours it might be very crowded.

Buses leave the airport every 15/20 minutes and the whole journey takes between 30 and 40 minutes depending on the train you take and how long you’ll have to wait between the bus and train. Check the bus timetable here.

If you are going to Tiburtina Train Station, you won’t have a direct train from Ciampino. You’ll have to go to Termini and get the metro line B toward Rebibbia. Still quite easy.

AUTOBUS E BUS SHUTTLE

Bus 720 e 520 – atac.

ATAC is Rome’s public transport company and you’ll be using it quite a bit to get aroung the city.

From Ciampino airport you can get: bus n. 72o going to Laurentina Station (sounthern end of metro line B) or bus 520 that goes to Subaugusta and Cinecittà stations, both along metro line A.

ATAC buses have a less reliable timetable and they take much longer to get there but they are certainly the cheapest way to reach the center. A single ticket costs € 1.50 and you can re-use it one more time for the metro. This ticket is also covered by ATAC PASS and ROMA PASS. For more information on bus and metro ticket options I recommend you read my guide of Rome’s public transportation.

If you need metro line A you can also get the ATRAL bus that goes from Ciampino to ANAGNINA metro station.

A single ticket costs €1,20 and you can buy it online, at the ticket desk at the airport or directly on board. Buses run from 05:50 am to  alle 23 pm.  Go to Atral official website for on line booking and timetable.

There are two  private companies that offer a bus transfer service from Ciampino airport to Rome’s city centre:

TERRAVISION ROMA CIAMPINO

This company working in most international airports in Europe has some of the lowest fares. A single, one way tickets costs € 5,00 with €1,00 discount for round trip tickets or for booking well in advance.

Buses from Ciampino to Roma Termini Sation run everyday from 08:15 am to 11:40 pm. Buses from Termini to Ciampini run from 04:30 am to 09:20 pm.   Check the time table here.

If you buy  tickets online, you will be asked to indicate the date and time of your trip. Choose your date carefully but don’t worry too much about the time: depending on availability you can actually take any bus on your chosen day regardless of the time you have indicated. You don’t need to print out your ticket, just show it on your mobile phone.

BOOK BUS SHUTTLE

SIT BUS SHUTTLE

This bus too goes to  Roma Termini Station with an intermediate stop in the city of Ciampino. A single ticket costs €6,00. Buses from the airport run from 07:45 am to 00:30 am. Buses from Termini to the airport run from 04:30 am to 09.30 pm. For online booking and timetable go to SIT official webisite .

The journey time indicated is approximately 40 minutes but it  actually depends a lot on traffic.

SIT bus stops are located on both sides of Termini Railway station that is on Via Marsala e Via Giolitti.

Private Transfer

If you’re travelling to Rome from Ciampino or vice versa with a group of 12 or more people it’s a wise choice to book a private transfer service that will take you from the terminal to your accommodation.

I suggest grabbing a quote on the Suntransfer website for the best prices.

An example: if there are 8 adults, 3 children, and 1 infant the cost of a transfer from Girona airport to central Barcelona and vice versa costs around €185.00 ( €15.41 pp each way ).

Suntransfer also has car seats for kids up to 4.

TAXI A ROMA CIAMPINO

Taxi is obviously a very comfortable option but much more expensive. All the more so becasue Roman taxi drivers have a bad reputation for overcharging passengers, especially tourists.

Always bare in mind that official, licensed taxis from Rome airports have fixed rates .

Ciampino airport to Rome’s city centre: € 30

Ciampino airport to Tiburtina Staion: € 35

Ciampino airport to Fiumicino airport: € 50

If you want to pay by card, you should tell the driver in advance to make sure it’s actually possible as it’s not always the case.

At any rate, I recommend you get a free airport taxi quote using Taxileader .

You’ll easy spot the taxi rank once you exit the airport terminals.

For more taxi options and useful info, check my article on Rome’s transports .

An equally comfortable option is car rental with driver . In this case the rate is variable and must be agreed upon directly with the company.

TRANSFER PRIVATI

If you are travelling in a group you may want to consider private transfer. There are several companies that offer this service, we recommend Suntransfer .

If you are a group of 6 people you’ll end up spending around €10 each and you’ll be taken straight to your hotel at the time you indicate.

If you’re still not sure how to get from Ciampino airport to the city centre make sure you write me in the comments below with your hotel/hostel address and I’ll let you know the best way in!

Ciampino Airport (CIA) is the smaller of the two airports that serve Rome, Italy. It is also officially named Aeroporto G.B. Pastine but is only referred to as Ciampino when booking tickets. The airport is located 7.5 miles (12 km) southeast of the Rome city center, making it the closer of the two airports to the downtown area. Ciampino is a former military airport that now welcomes low-cost carriers with civilian flights.

Ciampino airport consists of 16 gates, a majority of which are located after Duty-Free once you pass through security. Four gates are located after passport control, which is really just a glassed off area of the same main terminal building. You will have to go through passport control if you are traveling outside of the Schengen visa zone (for example, to the UK or Ireland). Keep in mind, there are no eateries or shops once you go through to this area. There are vending machines and bathrooms, but you should essentially be ready to board when you enter the non-Schengen gates.

How to Get There

Ciampino Airport is located close to the city of Rome but can be the more difficult of the two Rome airports to reach. The easiest way to reach CIA is by car or taxi.Taxis from Rome to Ciampino (or vice versa) have a set price of €30 . Taxis can be booked in advance , or found at official taxi ranks. The meter will not be used unless you are traveling to Ciampino from outside the designated center of Rome. The drive takes around 35 minutes, depending on traffic.

The Ciampino train station is not located directly at the airport, so there is no train link between the airport and the city. For public transportation from Ciampino, plan to take the 720 bus to EUR to catch Metro line B. If you prefer to take Metro line A, board the Atral bus to Anagnina station and switch there. Bus tickets must be purchased in advance.

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reach the center of Rome is to take a private coach bus. Terravision provides regular transfers between Ciampino and Rome Termini station for about €5 each way. They provide luggage storage and Wi-Fi onboard.

Here is a complete guide of how to get from Ciampino to Rome.

Check-in and Security

Once you have entered the doors of Ciampino Airport, you are immediately inside the check-in area. There are only a few check-in desks for the various airlines, with RyanAir taking up a majority of the space. The check-in process can be slow, so this is what you need to budget the most time for. It is a good idea to have your boarding passes printed out (there can be extra charges for checking in in person for some airlines). If you are from a non-EU country, you will likely need to wait in line for a visa check, even if you don’t have any bags to drop off. Expect this line to take around 30 minutes.

The start of the security area is located about 30 feet from the check-in counters. You will scan your boarding pass to enter the line. This is standard airport security but it tends to move very quickly. You are not required to remove your shoes unless you are wearing boots. Security at Ciampino takes less than 5 minutes on average.

Eating and Shopping

Ciampino is so small that there are limited eating and shopping options inside the airport. However, you can find enough food to tide you over before your flight. One of the most comfortable eating areas is BEFORE security. Instead of passing through the security gates, turn right and you will find a small cafeteria at the end of the hall. Here you can order primi, secondi and contorni (Italian first and second courses, plus side dishes). The menu changes daily but always features pasta, meat dishes, and vegetable options. Drinks, including beer and wine, are also for sale.

Just before you reach the food hall, you will also find a WHS store for newspapers and snacks, as well as a small pharmacy for last-minute personal items and over the counter medicine you may have forgotten.

Once you pass through the security line, there are a few options for food and drinks. The first you will encounter is a newspaper stand which sells snacks and drinks. Across from the newspaper stand is a Duty-Free store for gifts. Walking through the Duty-Free will bring you to a modest coffee bar and the largest seating area in the airport.

Rather than going towards the Duty Free, you can also walk straight towards passport control. Here you will find a small gelateria, a busy coffee bar with sandwiches and breakfast pastries (as well as a variety of bottled drinks to take away), and finally a Rosso Pomodoro. The Rosso Pomodoro serves pizza by the slice and this is the closest thing you will find to hot, cooked food once you are inside Ciampino Airport.

people at coffee bar inside Ciampino airport

All the food in the airport can be ordered to take away and carried onto your flight or eaten in the waiting area before boarding. There are no tables to sit down and enjoy a meal once you have passed through security.

Lounges and Wi-Fi

I need to reiterate here that Ciampino Airport is very busy. This is the main base for low-cost carriers such as RyanAir in Rome, so you will not find very impressive amenities. There are no lounges or showers, or really many comfortable seats. However, there is free Wi-Fi and you will be able to find plenty of outlets and mobile charging stations if you need to pass the time on your phone before your flight.

Airport Hours

Ciampino Airport is open from 4:30 am to 12 am (midnight). This means that the airport officially closes for a few hours after midnight and it is not possible to spend the night here. If you are looking for somewhere to sleep nearby, there are lots of affordable B&B style options in the town of Ciampino, which I have listed in my guide on Rome airport hotels .

Ciampino Airport

Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport, known more commonly as Ciampino (CIA), is Rome’s second and smaller airport.

Only low-cost or budget airlines operate out of Ciampino. It has flights to and from 51 cities in 23 different countries, so chances are if you’re flying a low-cost airline from within Europe, you’ll be arriving here.

Everything You Need to Know

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Accessible by public transport , Ciampino Airport (pronounced cham – PEE – no) lies southeast of Rome and approximately 18 km from the city centre.

Its official name is “Aeroporto di Ciampino, G.B Pastine”, named after a fallen war hero from WW2. So if it’s your first time leaving from this airport, do not be alarmed when you see this name emblazoned over the entrance with no mention anywhere of Ciampino. (Anyone who’s arrived at the wrong airport because of official name versus local name confusion will have this kind of trauma).

Before the days of low-cost flights, Ciampino Airport was a military base and has only relatively recently been commercialised. This makes it no more than a fledgling airport really, which comes with many advantages.

Small in size, especially compared to mega-sized Fiumicino ; CIA is mega manageable. No long treks to your boarding gate or passport control, no overwhelming labyrinthine routes through the Duty-Free. It’s actually a very modest affair.

So whether you’re flying into Ciampino for the first time, or flying out for some low-cost intercontinental adventuring, read on for transport tips, what to expect, and nearby attractions.

Getting to Rome from Ciampino

1. bus and metro: the best and cheapest way.

Ciampino Airport is serviced by the Roman transport network (ATAC). There are two local buses which will deposit you at a Metro station . A single ticket is valid for 100 minutes, so you can use the same ticket for the bus as the Metro.

Assuming you are going to be based in central Rome, your journey will be complete in under an hour, so this is by far the most cost-effective way into the city.

How To Do It:

At arrivals, you will see a row of bus ticket offices on your right.

The last one is an official Rome Tourist Information desk where you can buy public transport tickets. If you’re planning to spend a solid two days in Rome, consider a 48-hour travel pass , valid on buses and Metro.

You can also pay by contactless credit card (or the app on your phone) on the Metro and on most buses too.

It’s not possible to buy tickets on board the bus.

Top tip : Always have a physical bus ticket on you, just in case.

Recommended Route

There are two local buses which will get you to a Metro station. The 520 will take you to Cinecitta, which is on the A (orange) line. The 720 will take you to Laurentina Metro Station, which is on the B (blue) line. I recommend the 720 route, so here is my step by step by guide:

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

As you exit the Arrivals hall, you will be led down towards the bus stops. Local buses, as well as larger direct buses (coaches Br. Eng), leave from various bus stands on the left.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

You’ll see information like this dotted about the airport and by the bus stops. They’re only really helpful if you know where you’re going and presume you have prior basic knowledge of Roman geography.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Board the bus from the middle and back doors rather than the front.

Drivers have a partition separating them from passengers. They’ll be in there, in their own little world, and there will be signs in Italian saying, “Please do not talk to the driver”. However, some drivers will be more than happy to talk to you.

Most buses have now (thankfully) been fitted with two ways to validate your ticket. The old-fashioned way, where your ticket goes into the yellow machine, and it gets time-stamped, and the new 21st century way, where you just tap your contactless card.

Top tip: It’s good practice to have a paper ticket on you in case you experience the double misfortune of the machine being out of order and a grumpy ticket inspector insisting you must have a valid ticket and then fining you on the spot for not having one.

Posters on the bus show you how to validate your ticket.

Fancy new machines that accept contactless card payments .

The 720 bus will take you through pastures, green vineyards, and bumpy semi-rural roads until you get to this. Laurentina. An 80’s postmodern sort of transport hub in need of some TLC and a lick of paint. I can’t promise it will be the most glamorous start (or end) to your Roman Holiday – but it is going to get you where you need to be.

Laurentina is the last stop on the bus route, so there is no danger of you missing your stop. When you get off, cross over towards the big blue columns. Walk toward the yellow part of the building, and the entrance to the metro station will be on your right.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Laurentina, on the B line, is also the last stop on the line, so no danger of going in the wrong direction here either. All trains go to Termini.

The final destination of the train will either be Rebibbia or Jonio – if you’re staying in central Rome and going no further than Bologna on the B line, then it won’t matter which train you take. If you have a paper ticket from the bus, use the same one to go through the ticket barriers for the Metro. Otherwise, you can tap your contactless card again.

The other local bus option is to take the 520 instead to Cinecittà. Be aware that Cinecittà is not the end of the line, so double-check with a fellow passenger about getting off at the right stop.

Italians love helping tourists, especially senior citizens. Any excuse to talk. The bus stop is next to the Metro entrance (there are steps going down). You might prefer to take the A line directly if your accommodation is located closer to an A stop.

2. Direct Buses (Coaches)

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Bus companies such as Terravision and Roma Airport Bus operate direct services to Termini train station , and tickets are available to purchase from the Arrivals hall. The journey time is around 50 minutes.

The bus stands are located to the left of the local bus stop, straight ahead of you as you exit the airport. You can’t miss them.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Above: Direct buses to Rome

Note there is no direct train service to this airport – the Ciampino that you see on the train map is the actual town, which runs a shuttle service from the train station called the Ciampino Airlink.

You can purchase your shuttle bus ticket from the ticket office at Arrivals (shown below). It’s a short journey over to Ciampino Train Station, where you can take a regional train to Termini .

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Tip : If you are flying out of Ciampino and are considering taking the regional train from Termini, a word of warning:

  • Trains to Ciampino normally leave from platform 20 or 20 B, which is a trek and a half away from the ticket barriers and a bit tricky to locate among the swathes of people in peak season. Termini is immense.
  • The Shuttle Bus may or may not come. In theory, it will, but might not necessarily adhere to the timetable. For peace of mind, I would go for something a bit more straightforward.

There are regular direct buses that leave from Termini on Via Giovanni Giolitti (on the right-hand side if you are facing Termini, just after Mercato Centrale Roma). You can pay the driver on board the bus.

4. Taxi and Uber

The Rome airport taxi rank is located just after the local bus stop. These are local Roman white taxis, which all have fixed fares posters stuck to the door. You can expect to pay in the region of 30 Euros to get into central Rome.

Uber fans will be pleased to learn that the app works quite well, but you won’t necessarily be saving any time or money by using it. Local taxis take card payments, and there are generally plenty to go around.

Being such a small airport, you will need to exit the plane using the stairs.

There will be no bridge connecting you to the terminal. If you or anyone you’re travelling with has mobility issues, do bear this in mind. It’s a short walk to the main terminal building.

Passport control is divided between EU Nationals with biometric passports and all other nations who will have their passport checked by local police.

You’ll then proceed into baggage claim, and then a very small arrivals hall with exit signs clearly indicated. On your right-hand side, there will be three ticket offices from which you can purchase bus tickets to Rome.

Check-in desks are located directly in front of the entrance as you come up the stairs or the ramp. You won’t need to worry about being at the wrong Terminal or the right check-in area.

It’s all in one and the same place.

Security is straight on towards the right as you enter.

There is a fast track, but why anyone would use it, considering the size of the airport, beats me.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

Above. Tiny Security Control and the Fast Track gate. To the right, directions to the only two places to eat before you go through security; McDonald’s and the Coffee and Bakery bar.

Before Security Controls, you’ll find bathrooms, a Mcdonald’s, a coffee shop, a WhSmiths (for books, souvenirs, and general toiletries), and two vending machines.

That is literally it.

Once you get through the metal detectors, you will find one cafe and the possibility of ordering McDonald’s via an app that they bring over to you in take-out paper bags from the other side. It was bizarre, but people were doing it.

Duty-free shopping and last-minute gifts/souvenirs are extremely limited at Ciampino, so get that stuff done before you arrive or be sorely disappointed.

You won’t be getting any of the luxury shopping experience or dazzling array of cosmetics, perfumes, and booze on offer at FCO.

Accommodation

There are no hotel airports per se, but you will find a wide variety close by in the small town of Ciampino itself.

A couple stood out to me:

Hotel Villa Giulia is within walking distance of Ciampino (town) train station (handy if you’re travelling in from Termini), offers late check-ins, and is located close to the Rome airport shuttle bus stop.

Plaza Rooms Ciampino equally is fully equipped, offering free breakfast and Wi-Fi, within easy walking distance to the Airport Shuttle bus stop.

OK, But Can I Sleep at the Airport?

If you have an exceptionally early flight, you are now permitted to spend the night in the very limited waiting area just before Security Control. There’s Wi-Fi and a couple of vending machines, and a Carabiniere or two doing the rounds, making sure it’s all safe.

A couple of years ago, during the pandemic, this wasn’t the case. Some bus drivers and taxi drivers (not to mention many websites out there) still haven’t got the memo and might tell you in very grave tones that the airport is closed from midnight to 4 am. I learned the hard way that they were wrong. I chalked it up to a case of “benevolent misinformation”, which happens quite a lot in Italy. But it’s all part of the fun.

Nearby Attractions

This is Italy, so it should come as no surprise to learn that you’re always close to something wonderful – it’s getting there that’s the issue! This is ‘car country’, but do not despair. I’ve weeded out some options.

So if you have an awkward layover at Ciampino that doesn’t warrant another day in Rome, try these on for size.

Castel Gandolfo

Why go there.

Well, if it’s good enough for the Pope…! Castel Gandolfo, on the shores of Lago Albano, is a real treat. It’s a short walk down to the lake from the station, where you’ll find charming views and countless little places to have a bite to eat.

OK, How Do I Get There?

Take the Ciampino Airlink bus to the Ciampino train station.

Take the regional train to Castel Gandolfo.

Journey time: less than an hour.

Frascati is famous for its wine.

Oh, you still need more reasons? OK, it’s also a beautiful small city in its own right with a ton of history, good restaurants, churches, and piazzas. I feel like I’m stating the obvious here, but it’s all true!

OK, How Do I Get There?

Two options:

  • Take the Ciampino Airlink bus to the Ciampino train station. Take the regional train to Frascati.
  • Take local bus 520 to Capannelle Train Station. Take the regional train to Frascati.

Fiumicino or Ciampino Airport: Which is the best airport to get to Rome?

People waiting in the viewing gallery at Fiumicino Airport in Rome

More often than not, cities with more than one airport can give you some sort of a dilemma on picking the right one to travel to and from. Think Frankfurt’s Frankfurt Airport and Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, or Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Narita Airport. Rome’s little travel conundrum comes in the form of its two airports: Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Ciampino Airport (CIA).

If you’re planning to fly into Rome and don’t want your trip to the Eternal City to be an eternal confusion, then this guide is for you. Here’s the low-down on both airports and what to consider when deciding on which airport is best for your trip.

Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

The check-in counters at Fiumicino Airport in Rome

Also known as the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport, Fiumicino is Rome’s main airport. With five terminals and 36 gates, it is the larger and busier of the two, with more than 43 million passengers passing through its gates. Fiumicino is where most major airlines—like American Airlines, Lufthansa, and ITA Airways—will land, so if you’re traveling internationally, Fiumicino is where you’ll likely end up.

Both human and vehicular traffic is a lot higher than Ciampino, so don’t be alarmed if your luggage takes a little bit longer than usual to come through. To the uninitiated, you might also find its many gates a tad confusing.

However, there is much more to see and do in Fiumicino, with lots of shopping and dining options available. There are also many tours that start from Fiumicino, such as this one-way private transfer and dining tour of Rome , allowing you to enjoy the first sights of the city in style before being ferried right to your accommodation.

Getting to and from Fiumicino Airport

Passengers waiting for the train at Fiumicino Airport to Rome city

Being Rome’s main airport, Fiumicino is slightly better connected to the city than Ciampino, with several ways that you can travel to the city center.

Taking a taxi, train or bus will all get you into the city easily without the need for an airport transfer. Additionally, if you’re making your way to Rome Termini Station from the airport, there are also Express Train tickets that will get you there quickly and conveniently. Bus tickets can cost as little as €5 (USD5.60), train tickets average at €14 (USD15.80), and taxis—clearly the most luxurious—can cost anywhere between €26-73 (USD29.40-82.70).

If you’re not a fan of the crowds, head straight to the car rental desks inside Office Tower 2, easily accessible through the pedestrian tunnels.

How far is Fiumicino Airport from Rome?

Fiumicino Airport is about a 40-minute drive from Rome—often longer depending on the traffic—while the train ride typically takes only 30 minutes. Although Fiumicino is slightly further from Rome than Ciampino, there are more modes of transportation available that will make your commute a little more convenient.

Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Passengers boarding a plane on the runway at Ciampino Airport in Rome

Ciampino is the smaller of the two airports in Rome and its 16 gates mostly serve budget airlines like EasyJet and Wizz Air. This also means that it’s much easier to navigate your way through this airport, making for a more peaceful and fuss-free introduction to Rome.

Ciampino is a no-frills airport that serves to get travelers in and out of Rome. The simplicity makes this airport much easier to figure out, and without the massive crowds that Fiumicino normally gets, you don’t have to wait very long to receive your luggage or get through passport control. And there are enough options that can get you from the airport to the Rome city center.

Getting to and from Ciampino Airport

A man waiting for the bus to Ciampino Airport from Termini in Rome

Like Fiumicino, there are also several modes of transportation to and from Ciampino. The easiest way to get to Rome Termini Station, which is in the heart of the city center, is by bus. Not only are tickets cheap at €5 (USD5.60), there are also several bus services available from the airport: SIT, Terravision, and Romeairportbus-Schiaffini.

While there isn’t a train station connected to Ciampino itself, the nearest one—Ciampino Station—is just a five-minute shuttle bus ride away, thanks to the Trenitalia Ciampino Airlink. Car rental services are also available near the entrance of Ciampino (accessible via a free shuttle service) as well as taxis pickups outside each terminal—though keep your eyes peeled for taxi drivers who may overcharge.

How far is Ciampino Airport from Rome?

The journey from Ciampino is a slightly faster and more scenic 30-minute drive to the city, where you’ll be able to spot the Via Appia, a historic and charming stretch of cobblestone path that dates back to ancient Roman times. A taste of Rome aside, there’s less traffic to and from Ciampino, making the journey a lot more reliable and consistent.

So which is the best airport to get to Rome?

Ciampino Airport in Rome

If you’re coming from a further destination on a major airline, Fiumicino is probably where you will likely end up. But if you’re traveling on a budget, nothing beats the fuss-free Ciampino Airport. While Fiumicino has a slight edge over Ciampino in terms of offerings and connectivity, there are pros and cons of both. What matters most is that you’re in Rome, and it’s time to do as the Romans do.
