The tour was punishing

The tour was punishing. Had to get up at around 05.00 each day; sometimes 04.00. Interesting but not relaxing. On last day, sandstorm over Luxor caused us to miss BA flight to London. Local rep insisted we re-book BA flights for next day and pay for them ourselves. Still trying to recoup money. Needless to say, it is not forthcoming and neither has an apology been given

excellent tour director Tran Khanh Long and all the local guides. Long was with us from the very start to the very end and his professional organisation, presentation, and attention to detail was amazing. All guides general and local knowledge was amazing.

Lower Ganges, golden triangle and Mumbai

The cruise part was excellent, with great food and good trips out. The hotels selected were variable with some just tired, some having no hot water (Ranthambore), or engineering works at night and lacking some general cleanliness (Clarks Shiraz). The train elements were just endurable, with closed curtains so no view and dodgy toilets. The Taj Mahal was of course excellent. No transfer was booked from Delhi airport, our fellow passengers managed to resolve by phone but we were stranded for 90 minutes or so. With the 40° heat and 90+ % humidity, we could have done with a little more downtime. Probably a few too many trips to carpet sellers, gem sellers, marble sellers etc. as well. There were many good points too, but nothing like as good as our previous experience on the Vietnam / Cambodia tour. Laxmi Villas lunch was nice and the Gandhi museum and garden was a highlight.

Cambodia to Vietnam March 2024

From the start to the finish we never stopped smiling, the cabins were cleaned everyday, the food was different to what we would normally eat but we always found something for our tastes. The entire staff from The Hotel Manager to the staff we never saw, looked after us entirely throughout our journey. We would not hesitate to go on an APT trip again.

Lower Ganges River Cruise

The trip was extremely well organised from start to finish & the crew on the riverboat went out of their way to ensure the comfort of passengers & attend to their every need. The food & service were excellent & we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Vietnam and Cambodia 15 days

The whole trip was extremely well organised and professional. The quality of the hotels was fantastic. The organisation of all the trips and transfers were amazing. As a first timer and a solo travel I was amazed with the whole trip. The cruise director was superb throughout and i would definitely travel with APT in the future. Just a pity that the single supplement costs may prohibit me from travelling solo with APT. Thank you APT for a wonderful experience.

The attention to detail was superb

The attention to detail was superb, the holiday director was meticulous in giving information. The hotel in Cambodia was everything we could want. The cruise ship was fabulous from the rooms to the food . The staff on board were extremely helpful. All in all it was a holiday to remember.

It was great and what I expected

It was great and what I expected. Kolkata was a little crazy and the weather was, at times, very hot and humid. Taj Bengal hotel rooms a little disappointing but the food was great. Full days with outings meant there was not a lot of down-time for relaxing. Discovered an Indian gin 'Greater Than' on board and I managed to get a couple of bottles home (bought from shop not borrowed from boat) with me. This was our first river cruise so we were not too sure what to expect but it worked well in the end. Boat crew very helpful with my wife who has some restrictions on walking.

Overall 2.5* if you include head office

I have actually lowered my review score in the light of poor customer service and derisory loyalty incentives for previous passengers. In general the tour experience we had was as expected. The tour staff and hotels in Cambodia and Vietnam were good. The food on the boat was as we expected. The main gripes were probably due to our age, we were 15-20 years younger than most people on the trip/boat. *The gym on the boat, if you are interested in that, sub par. Cheap badly functioning multi-gym and no other weights/resistance equipment or spin bikes. *The cruise excursions were quite repetitive & not great - many village houses were visited. We rushed round the Cu Chi tunnels and were not allowed to watch the introduction film, until someone insisted. The shooting range was also out of bounds to us for some reason … *The cruise onboard entertainment 🥺, how many times can you listen to a pianist playing, “how much is that doggy in the window?” Or watch the chef carve fruit. Many missed opportunities here to easily enrich the cruise experience. I did try to feed this back in private messages to APT - to allow them to address or respond, however their system of dealing with feedback is shambolic to non existent. Eventually I emailed the CEO about the promised loyalty discount code which never arrived, after a month of unacknowledged emails. The sales director has apparently now forwarded my emails to customer service … Really these are the lengths you have to go to! The moaning points are relatively easily dealt with - if they are heard by APT. But they aren’t interested in feedback.

Excellent, after a "hiccup"

We spotted what we thought was a real bargain offer and so were keen to make sure we could take advantage of it. We spent some time waiting to be spoken to on the phone before leaving a request for a call back and also getting as far as we could with an online booking which also entailed waiting for a call back. We had heard nothing after an hour (the "hiccup") and so tried ringing again. We got through almost immediately and the agent we spoke to picked up the previous contacts and dealt very politely, efficiently and calmly with our questions and the booking process. She also made us aware of a further price reduction and included transportation to and from the airport that added to this being a good deal, for which we thanked her. Had it not been for the "hiccup" this would have been a 5-star marking.

The trip was amazing

The trip was amazing! Tours off the ship were so interesting with fabulous guides and a good variety of experiences. Staff onboard were truly wonderful. They could not do enough to make our holiday special and they succeeded!

A PERFECT RIVER CRUISE

We did not fly out to the departure port but went to Budapest by train. Somewhat mysteriously APT would not pick us up from the station or take us back to the station in Amsterdam. (Total cost 35 Euros!) We did not receive mooring details or notice that the boat had moved moorings, resulting in a one a three quarter hour walk, with luggage, to find it! Contacting APT to find the boat was difficult as the contact numbers appeared to be to UK based personnel. Eventually we obtained a number from the cruise director who came ashore to direct us. However, once aboard we were impressed by the boat, its crew and the wonderful service we received. The cabin was comfortable and spotlessly clean. With a couple of exceptions, the food was 5 Star - one case of very undercooked lamb and one case of cold food. The onboard entertainment, The Double Malt Duo, was superb. The cruise director, Thomas, was again a credit to APT, knowledgeable, a good and amusing presenter and always helpful. The tours were generally excellent if not always to our taste. However, it was strange that bicycle tours were offered but were not available on our cruise. It would have been easy to delete them from our personalised programme. Finally, but certainly not least, all the crew from the captain and his officers to the domestic personnel and the seamen were always polite, friendly and attentive. We will certainly cruise with APT again and have already recommended the Line to friends.

Tour was very good but …

Tour was very good but far too much time on the coach and not enough time for stops as there were some lovely towns we called at for comfort breaks or lunch etc. we would have also liked more time to see the beautiful cities we very much rushed through. There were some lunch stops, remembering that this was a luxury tour, that were very much not up to standard. The choices for a dairy free pescatarian were very limited especially at lunch stops where I often had the choice of chips or fries! The organised meals weren’t much better with an exception of a few. I mostly had a choice of fish and chips or fish and whatever. By the end I felt I could have swum part of the way home. On the plus side we saw some spectacular scenery, met some lovely people and learnt so much about the history and culture of NZ.

Cambodia & Vietnam Mekong river cruise

Cambodia to Vietnam Mekong river cruise. We had a fantastic holiday. The experiences that we experienced were more than we could have hoped for. From the tour Manager (Son) to the guides , Bunta in particular, were fantastic. The staff on board . Food, trips, were excellent. The boat, cabins good size, loved the wood interior. Food excellent.Sun loungers not the best but by no means spoiled the holiday. If you are considering, book it,you will enjoy . Loved it !

I liked the organisation and care taken…

I liked the organisation and care taken by Travel Marvel both before and during the cruise. I felt at home with whole experience which matters to me as a single traveller. The excursions and guides were excellent as were the hotels in Hanoi, Saigon and Siem Reap. I came home buzzing about the company, the people of Vietnam and Cambodia and to end up at Angkor Wat was spectacular. The river boat was extremely comfortable and food excellent too. Looking forward to travelling with you again.

Great Trip!

Our Tour Director, Long, was absolutely excellent, together with the all staff in the hotels, on the ship and the tour guides. An amazing experience in places I really knew very little about beforehand. I have used APT in the past and they always provide the same level of service and attention to detail.

It was great and what I expected

Tour was very good but …

We appreciate that there are some longer distances to cover in New Zealand in order to experience the many highlights and stunning scenery along the way. With this in mind, some lunch stops may be in slightly more rural locations. Cambodia & Vietnam Mekong river cruise

Cambodia to Vietnam Mekong river cruise. We had a fantastic holiday. The experiences that we experienced were more than we could have hoped for. From the tour Manager (Son) to the guides , Bunta in particular, were fantastic. The staff on board . Food, trips, were excellent. The boat, cabins good size, loved the wood interior. Food excellent.Sun loungers not the best but by no means spoiled the holiday. If you are considering, book it,you will enjoy . Loved it !

I liked the organisation and care taken…

I liked the organisation and care taken by Travel Marvel both before and during the cruise. I felt at home with whole experience which matters to me as a single traveller. The excursions and guides were excellent as were the hotels in Hanoi, Saigon and Siem Reap. I came home buzzing about the company, the people of Vietnam and Cambodia and to end up at Angkor Wat was spectacular. The river boat was extremely comfortable and food excellent too. Looking forward to travelling with you again.

Great Trip!

APT River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest

What an amazing trip this was. APT really have this river cruising down pat. The whole experience was fabulous. The attractions, the tours, the ship, the crew, the Cruise Director, the food, the drink everything was sensational. The attention to detail meticulous. Thank you so much for a memorable experience. If you are thinking of doing this trip don't delay. Do yourself a favour and book with APT. And no it is not a pensioner tour it is for people who are looking for fabulous. We met a group of people on a cruise 7 years ago and have kept in touch ever since. Every two years we plan a holiday together and this one was so far the best one ever.

Whilst visiting Amsterdam we took a cruise through the canals. The Captain did some of the commentary and it was all in English. The cruise lasted an hour and the commentary was very informative. We saw houses all along the river including the narrowest at only 1 metre wide. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip it was good value for money.

Leisurly way to see the side streets(canals) of Amsterdam. The tall leaning buildings with their historical uses, set among tall trees are very attractive. The glimpses of side canals under bridges are real phot opportunities. We walked the Jordan area and this was wonderfully supplemented by the canal cruise.

cost us €15 each for the tour. The tour was very nice, the audio voices though were somewhat annoying - not quite sure what the 'husband and wife' were on about half the time. well worth a visit though especially at the beginning of the holiday.

If you have not been in Amsterdam before I recommend a canal cruise to get the feel of the city. You get to see many beautiful areas and typical style Amsterdam houses. The city is formed with a ring circle with much to see on the water and land. There are many house boats old and newer with lots of character and style. Amsterdam has much to offer and is very friendly and easy to get around . The canal cruise can be very relaxing and you can get many photos. I have lived in Amsterdam and have tried many different canal tours so no one is better than the other they all do their best to show you their city.

it was a unforgettable experience in my life . so interesting and i could have taken many beautiful photographs during my canal cruise. you can make this canal cruise in the evening or night and feel the difference .

APT Travelmarvel River Cruise Review – Part 1 | Joining Travelmarvel Polaris in Budapest

We were very fortunate to be invited onboard the beautiful APT Travelmarvel Polaris for a three-night sailing, which was a wonderful opportunity to get a feel for what APT Travelmarvel has to offer. Read along with our APT Travelmarvel River Cruise Review.

Day 1 – Embarkation onboard APT Travelmarvel Polaris in Budapest

Our taster cruise was part of the APT Travelmarvel 14-night European Gems itinerary, which would see the guests onboard travel from Budapest and visit some of Europe’s best capitals, and many smaller towns along the River Danube.

We flew to Budapest from London Gatwick, and it was great to hear that APT Travelmarvel River Cruises can include flights from the majority of UK airports, as well as transfers from the Airport to their River Ships, so it was nice to have an end to end seamless, and relaxing journey to join our ship.

This route is available in both directions, so you can start in Amsterdam or Budapest, you can also take the first or last half of this trip, Amsterdam to Nuremburg, which is called Reflections of the Rhine & Main, or the Delightful Danube which is Nuremburg to Budapest.

So, there are plenty of options for those who want a longer time exploring the rivers of Europe, or those who want to just focus on the Rhine, or focus on the Danube.

Meeting APT Travelmarvel Polaris

We had a brief tour of APT Travelmarvel Vega a few days before her launch, and Polaris is her sistership, with an identical layout and design. The Travelmarvel ships are Premium four-star contemporary river ships with the APT branded ships offering 5-star luxuary.

After leaving our cases with the reception team, we were invited into the True North Lounge, a space that is very much the heart of the ship. Offering a space to relax and watch the rivers of Europe unwind during the daytime, with tea and coffee stations included in your fare.

This is also where afternoon tea/lunch is served, which is the perfect pick me up after you have been out exploring all day and need to recharge ready for your evenings onboard, which is when the True North Lounge also becomes an entertainment space, with live music from local artists, and resident singers. There is also a full bar for you to order premium drinks like cocktails, spirits and wine.

We sat in the conservatory area towards the very front of the ship, sipping some sparking wine whilst we got to know each other, and met our hosts from APT Travelmarvel. If you have ever watched any of our videos on APT, you would have met Becky, who is our Sales Manager from APT Travelmarvel, and was very kind to invite us on this trip.

Hungarian Bite to Eat at For Sale Pub

As we were arriving onto the ship early, meal service wouldn’t be ready for some time, so our hosts took us to a local pub that served traditional Hungarian comfort food called For Sale Pub . Serving large portions of food that are the perfect ailment to an early start and a wet windy November day.

I optioned for the first of many portions of Gulash I would have this trip, not sure if it was the winter weather or the “When in Budapest” of it all, but it was delicious and certainly hit the spot.

The decor and ambience were certainly interesting. Peanuts are served to the table, and you are invited to leave the shells on the floor amidst the sawdust, then handwritten notes are pinned to pretty much every surface you can find.

Its a wonderful spot for a bite to eat, always very busy, and near the river, so depending on where the ship is berthed, should be a short 5-minute walk away.

First Impressions of APT Travelmarvel Polaris

We then headed back to Travelmarvel Polaris where afternoon tea was served. If you have an early flight to the ship or a late flight home, your cabin may not be available to you, but you would be welcome to stay on the ship and enjoy the True North lounge as you wait for your flights.

So afternoon tea could be your first, or last meal onboard whilst you wait for your cabin/flights. All meals are included, as are coffee, tea and juices from the self-serve station. For afternoon tea a selection of cake and sandwiches were available, which made the perfect post-lunch treat whilst we enjoyed the backdrop of the Danube river traffic from the lounge as we got to know each other.

The atmosphere onboard is relaxed luxury, which is always our personal preference. APT Travelmarvel River ships are all less than 5 years old, and feature wonderful contemporary decor and design, looking around the ship, you would be shocked to learn that it is positioned as a four-star offering, as the tasteful decor and inclusions feel more suited to a five-star experience, so its certainly the top end of four-star river cruising.

Who is a good fit for APT Travelmarvel

APT is an Australian company, and currently, they only sell directly to the UK, New Zealand and Australian markets, meaning the mix onboard will be mainly made up of those demographics. Australian and New Zealand guests tend to prefer the 14-night sailings, whereas Brits prefer the short 7-night sailings, mainly due to the fact it’s closer for us to reach the rivers of Europe than those travelling from Australia and New Zealand.

Being relaxed luxury means the service standard is high, as is the food quality and range of included tours, but it also means you won’t find stuffy or fussy meal service, formal dress wear, or particularly high-brow entertainment in the lounge each evening. It’s certainly elevated, but in a relaxed luxurious way.

Whilst river cruising certainly appeals to an older demographic, Travelmarvel is appealing to a younger demographic than most river companies, due to its relaxed nature, and the freedom that comes with its choice of included tours and free time to explore.

Video Tour of my APT Travelmarvel Polaris Cabin

For my time on Travelmarvel Polaris, I would be staying in a Category A+ French Balcony, this cabin is located in the middle of the upper deck and is the highest-grade balcony cabin on the ship. At 167 sq ft, this cabin offers plenty of space for your European adventures, with a vanity mirror, ample storage, and seating areas in front of the windows, perfect for enjoying the scenery as you sail with a coffee, or glass of bubbles.

That said, the only difference between the other grades is how high you are on the ship, and how central. There is a leading category, the Window Stateroom, which offers 153 Sq Ft of space, so still sizable, but is located at the water level, so have a small window that looks out at the waterline.

There are also four Owner’s suites available, which offer 258 sq ft of space, but sadly (for us), they were occupied on this sailing, so we were unable to view them.

Dining onboard APT Travelmarvel Polaris

Main meals are included with all Travelmarvel voyages and are served in the Constellations Restaurant, located at the front of the ship on the lower deck.

Wine and beer are included with all meals, and the crew are certainly generous with their pourings, and you are always welcome to ask for one for the road. Soft drinks are Juices are also included for those who choose not to drink alcohol.

Dining is done freestyle, so you can choose to dine whenever you like whilst the dining room is open, no fixed seating, so you can sit with your travel party or any of the friends you make on your voyage.

Menus will always take inspiration from your journey, so you can expect to find something new each day, and is perfect for those who like to sample local cuisine while travelling.

Everything I ate whilst onboard was truly delicious, and fed my need to try something new and local whilst travelling.

As we were dining a Hungarian Romani performer walked around the dining room to entertain us, it certainly helped with the immersion into Budapest, and it was fantastic that we were dining and entertaining with local culture whilst in the comfort of our beautiful rivership.

It’s so important to highlight this for those who want to ensure they are getting an authentic experience when visiting these destinations, you can be sure when travelling with Travelmarvel that any opportunity to bring on local cuisine or entertainment will be taken advantage of, you are getting an authentic experience, and not just spectating from afar.

Enjoying the Budapest Illuminations

Polaris then set sail up the river Danube for the nightlight Budapest Illuminations. Sadly, the weather wasn’t on our side as it was hammering it down, but Roland our fantastic cruise director was still determined to make this a fantastic event for us.

He set up his PA and music decks on the open decks of the ship and was playing classical music as the ship sailed back down the Danube with all the buildings and bridges lit up for the evening.

We were able to get warm Gluhwien to keep us warm as we were travelling along the Danube enjoying the sights lit up so beautifully.

After we enjoyed the illuminations, it was time to warm back up in the main lounge for a few drinks and chat with the new friends I met on this sailing. It wasn’t long before late-night snacks were available, a mix of light bites and canapes that were available for self-service, as well as brought around on trays.

Then a hot chocolate before heading to bed, where I watched about 10 minutes of the on-demand movie I picked at random before falling asleep.

Danube cruise

Danube cruise - visits to Budapest and Vienna were very enjoyable. Tour guide in Vienna was excellent, as was the Mozart Strauss concert. The length of the tour in Regensburg could have been a bit shorter. The cabin on the ship was great and the food was very good. The only flaw was the timing of the return flight which resulted in a long wait at Munich Airport before we could check in and seats were not available.

A disappointing and costly mistake.

1.Pre- boarding & onboard lack of Covid testing/ monitoring. Like many passengers, we contracted Covid onboard. 2.Habitual queuing prior to restaurant opening times flouting 'open dining' concept. 3. A lot of the food, especially sauces were recycled from lunch to dinner. Heavy reliance on pre-booked breaded food. In conclusion, a great disappointment after last year's Croatian small ship Dalmatian coast cruise.

The whole experience was lovely

The whole experience was lovely, the staff were amazing. But I feltcruise director was not always on the ball when it came to explaining how much walking was involved. Plus he said always available I checked Many times never there. Whilst food was very nice, I really felt it was not 5 star except at the Captains table..that was lovely. Done 5 star before, this was generally 4 Star.

Second week so many poorly,people from Australia and far away places sneezing coughing ,i had to visit the doctor when i returned home who said i had a bad virus,,will never go on a river boat cruise again and it was very expensive,other people from Britain suffered too captain acknowledged the illness too.A waste of money.

Excellent itinery

Excellent itinery and a very good crew. A couple of niggles. 1. the gyms should have a cross trainer or similar and the weights, particularly on the Amavenita were pathetic. Also we were left too long after our shore trips to fend for ourselves. Food, though limited, was very good as was the service. I should add that the internet on Polaris was very good, however on Amavenita, it was poor.

Booking early has a down side

Although our experience was amazing I am writing about the down side to booking early as this is not always the best price. We upgraded our cabin level which included free laundry and 2 massages , however when we arrived those extras had been removed for us with all other passengers having them included on that level. We booked the previous year and then found people booking a few weeks before had received free return taxis to the airport and paid 2k less than us . Just beware booking early doesn’t always work.

Superb cruise company

Superb cruise company, well managed and professional. The ship was top notch. We did the cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, just under 2000km, and 68 locks, along the Rhine, Maine and Danube. I have Coeliac disease and didn't have a single issue whilst onboard.

Enjoyable but also disappointing trip

Very very disappointed. We paid £7500 last December, and got an ok cabin. Friends of ours booked the same time and got a Suite for less than we paid! The food was disappointing, no entertainment at all except on the last night. Too many people for the size of the boat, so often difficult to sit with friends. There was only a first aider on board, unlike the excellent facilities provided by the Staff on previous trip. the trips out were very good. Not as wonderful as the Rhine/Danube cruise, and if we book with APT again will make sure it’s not with Travelmarvel too

poorly organised with trip leaders they were always repeating themselves. the hilight trrip to Salzberg was a long day with little information other than the film sound of music Both my wife and I arrived home with covid and the ship did not even have paracetamol available

Danube & Rhine Cruise September 2023

Food and drink excellent. Excursions well organised and comprehensive. Entertainment really good, better than expected. All staff were extremely friendly and professional. Only quibble, due to size constraints of the ship, cabins and bathrooms were not quite big enough to be called spacious. Bathroom towels were small and thin, although changed frequently. No complementary laundry was irritating and no soft drinks in mini bar also unnecessarily penny-pinching.

The whole experience was first class

The whole experience was first class. The boat (Amastella), was very luxurious, as were the cabins. The staff on the boat went above & beyond & nothing was too much trouble-they even seemed to enjoy looking after the guests! From the choice of excursions, the air conditioned coaches, the knowledge of the guides was expertly delivered. The food provided on-board was fabulous, as were the drinks. The attention to detail was excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending this holiday company to anyone.

Disappointed Vegetarian

The river cruise was very good and we enjoyed the trip. However my husband is vegetarian and the dinner option (no choice) was poor, in fact not vegetarian in some cases so we had to ask for modifications to the dish. This was unacceptable for the price we paid. We also paid extra for business class travel and that did not provide the benefits it should have. I am waiting to hear from APT on these matters as we have not had value for money.

Great professional company

Just returned from another Travelmarvel river cruise and they seem to get better l don't know how. We went on the 18 day Vietnam and Cambodia with the Mekong River cruise. From being picked from Hanoi airport with a wonderful guide called Jack he bent over backwards to make everything perfect he was so knowledgeable and always friendly. Couldn't do enough for us. He checked us for the flight to Ho Chi Minh city after sorting out a lovely lunch. Thank you Jack. We continued our tour and all excursions are included so nothing is left to chance. It's an amazing tour still trying to take it all in So thank you to all the tour guides they really made the most of a once in lifetime experience. Keep up the fantastic work Travelmarvel.

A great cruise through Germany

The Travelmarvel Capella is a modern ship, well-designed for river cruising. There are some fantastic places to visit, each one with at least an hour of free time after the guided tour. When there were delays on the river, the cruise managers ensured that we would still see everything on the schedule, with one exception - there was no time to visit the castle outside Cologne. I read one or two negative reviews before I sailed, but I did not experience any problems worth mentioning. APT were very good in accommodating our requirements for a few days in Munich before flying home. This was a great week's cruising (Amsterdam to Nuremberg), and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The ship was great and food excellent. Excursions were quite tiring and would have liked more daytime cruising. Sad that the river was closed due to low water but nothing could be done. Resulted in more time on coach than desirable.

Perfect way to experience the Danube
