Founded in 1988 by the group Chandis, a Greek company, the Celebrity Cruises is a cruising company that makes luxury his strong point, as the name suggests. Sold by the group Chandris to Royal Caribbean International in 1997, the company is headquartered in Miami, Florida.

Cruises Celebrity Cruises mainly serve the ports of the Antilles and the Caribbean. Like all big international companies, Celebrity Cruises also offers several cruises in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, and in the northern regions of Alaska and Canada.

For special occasions such as a wedding, a honeymoon or a business meeting, a cruise Celebrity Cruises is the ideal solution, thanks to low cost but high quality offers. The company’s fleet consists of 17 vessels, divided into classes Millennium and Solstice. The Celebrity Reflection is the largest ocean liner, weighs 126,000 tons and can accommodate more than 3,000 passengers on board.

Are you docking at Civitavecchia port and you need a transfer to Rome City or Fiumicino Rome Airport? Are you leaving from the port of Civitavecchia and you don’t know how to get there?

CivitavecchiaPort org offers the best private transfer service from and to Civitavecchia port . Our drivers are able to pickup (or drop-off) you under the Celebrity cruise ship, just outside the security control area (the tent), whatever your cruise ship is. An amazing experience on Celebrity Reflection

This review will be about mine and my husbands experience on board the ship and not about the trips we went on. Booked this first time cruise for our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Part of our package was that we got to fly on a private jet from the private terminal at Stansted. How lucky were we. No crowds, no fighting to get on the plane. We were served coffee/tea plus small danish pastries in the very plush lounges. A very civilised way to travel with 2 course breakfast on the way out and 2 course lunch on the way home. Landed at Grosseto Airport (a military airfield) and was then escorted to a waiting bus for the hour and a half trip to Civitivecchia . We were quite daunted when we arrived at the terminal, there were hundreds of people all trying to jockey for position. Fortunately, because we were on the JetSail package, we were fast tracked through check in and passport control. Once on board, there was a bit of a scrum for lifts up to our stateroom. We took a while to find it, not realising the even numbers were on one side of the ship and the odds on the other!! By the time we reached our stateroom we were quite anxious and were wishing we were back at home. We were very, very tired though having had an extremely early start. Our stateroom was spotlessly clean and immaculate. We were a little disappointed at first, we thought it would be larger but in reality it was more than adequate for our needs. The balcony was a major plus. Our luggage was waiting for us outside the room and once we had unpacked we went in search of the buffet. It was like the blind leading the blind. We eventually found it on Deck 14 and were not disappointed. The food was gorgeous and the choice excellent. Whilst we found the food and the silver service in the main Opus restaurant excellent, we decided early on that we would eat our evening meals in the Ocean View Cafe on Deck 14. The choice of food, both hot and cold, was amazing and we liked the informality of dining there. Where else can you eat food and watch dolphins swimming at the same time!! We did, however, choose to eat our breakfasts in the Opus Restaurant. I don't have enough words to describe the magnificence of Reflection. The range of activities, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops was truly awesome. On this ship you can choose whether you want to mix and join in activities and events or just do your own thing. I should say, however, that certain things, such as beauty treatments, were being pushed at you all over the ship and were certainly not cheap. The most amazing thing though was the crew and staff. There are not enough words in the English Dictionary to describe how Incredibly wonderful they all are. Nothing is too much trouble and EVERYONE, from top to bottom, were always smiling and ready to chat or help. This adventure was everything we were looking for and more. Whilst we will not become regular cruisers, we will hold this memory for ever.

For our 20th Wedding Anniversary my husband & I went on our first cruise ever. We sailed with NCL on the Mediterranean, and we wanted to visit every stop our cruise had to offer, but were not willing to pay the very high costs for the Norwegian Cruise expeditions. Based on comments on Tripadvisor and different reviews we decided to book with Cruising Excursions for all our excursions at a fraction of the price. From Napoli, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast to Pompeii, our first contact with them was even more professional than we had expected. This went on for Rome, Florence, Pisa and Palma Majorca. Everywhere we got off the boat our guide was always there, on time, speaking a perfect english and expertly guided us on an historical visit. The tour buses also were all very new and safe , air conditioned and driven by calm and experienced drivers. We would definitively recommend this excursion company to our family members and friends without hesitation. And all of this at a fraction of the price the cruise ship's costs. We always got back well before the ship left the dock. Cruising Excursions is up there with quality and professionalism.

Done a weeks curise at at the start of the month around the med on the Diadema, boat was nice and large, cabin was a good size for the two of us, the resturant food was lovely and always hot, only made to the restaurant once for breakfast it was good, the other mornings we ate at the buffet and found it very had/impossible to get a slice of toast, I think the drinks package is a must have as cocktails with service charges are around €10 each where a drinks package is only €25 a day. Was very unhappy about all the extras they wanted you to pay for like pizza and hamburgers also could not get food after 10pm unless you ordered room service(which you had to pay for). Everyday a leaflet is delivered to your cabin tell you about the next day's activities and dress code please do not take any notice of this as nobody seems to get dressed up. Staff were great very quick to serve you and always had a smile on their faces and very polite.

we decided to take a cruise with Costa cruises on the flagship Diadema this was from Barcelona and around the med ..I have done two cruises before not with Costa and enjoyed them but this was not to be with Costa the staff were moody long wait for food English was the 5th language the entertainment was childish you got surcharged on nearly every thing forced tipping no nick knack shops was told to leave the disabled table [was empty] even though I was obviously struggling asked to have my curtain fixed ..never happened this cruise is dominated by Italian tourist so lots of pushing in.. rushing into lifts before you have time to get out...and the list goes on we booked via Iglu never again customer service is awful bordering on being ridiculous

We booked the TUI Discovery-Cosmopolitan Classics for a special occasion our 50th Wedding Anniversary. A couple of weeks after we booked we had a letter to say some of the places we were to visit had been changed to other places we were not so looking forward to seeing. Again a few weeks before we were due to travel one place was brought back and another two changed. The two places we particularly wanted to visit were cancelled and a place which was not at all interesting was added, we tried to cancel and re book another cruise but Thomson would not let us it was a matter of losing the money we had paid which was £2,237.00 for one week so not an option. However we decided we had no alternative but to travel, the flight from East Mids to Palma Majorca was fine and then we boarded the ship. The cabin was a disapointment very small just a double bed one arm chair and small dressing table, the on suite was really small but this was due to only paying extra for the 3rd Deck I believe the higher you go the better the cabin. Parts of the ship were very nice eating places were either canteen type or waiter service which was much better. The food was no better than what we have had in four star hotels nothing special. Unfortunately for us the weather was not good and due to there being no day time entertainment it was very boring when at sea, all we had was a couple of quises and then a group playing for a couple of hours that was your lot for the day. The entertainment in the evening was very good the ships crew were very professional and put on some good shows twice nightly which was the only thing to look forward to. The pool was closed due to the norou virus being present so even on a dry day we could not use the pool this was very disappointing. We had to give our debit card details on boarding the ship even though we were all inclusive, we could check our account daily, we got to the last day with nothing extra to pay. However when we got home after a few days they had took £7.60 from our bank we went into the Thomson store to find out what this was for it turned out to be for a small can of pringles, very small bar of chocolate a small packet of nuts one small and one large bottle of water which were in our cabin along with tea & coffee making facilities. We thought the water was for the tea machine as they always tell you not to use water from the tap when abroad and the other items were complimentary so we ate the chocolate etc. which were less than child portions very small. We said how come there is a charge when we were all inclusive, we could have had any amount of drinks and food from the bars and restaurants outside so this did not make sense. The money was not the issue it was the principle although Thomson Store where we booked offered to refund the money as they thought it was unreasonable but we said no its not the money we are complaining about. I was advised to write to Thomson Cruises for the answer that was almost ten weeks ago, we returned on the 12th Oct'16 and sent a letter on the 27th Oct'16 a further reminder by email on 15th Dec'16 and as at today we are still waiting for that reply. Speaking to other people who had done many cruises no one had a good word for the TUI Discovery, people told us not to give up and try the bigger companies like P&O as they are brilliant with lots of things to do and for all ages so we did say the 1st and last but we may try a much larger ship in the future, we were so looking forward to the cruise but it was doomed from a few weeks after booking by changing the itinary, we were totally not impressed we would rather had two weeks holiday in a nice 4 star hotel for what the cruise cost. So be careful if you go on a Thomson Cruise make sure what is all inclusive and what is not.

After spending 4 memorable nights in beautiful, historical Rome, we left on the 17th of June aboard the Celebrity Reflection for a 10 day cruise. Never having cruised before we didn't really know what to expect. From the start we were astounded by the cleanliness of the ship, professionalism of the staff and quality and choice of the food. We had a standard balcony room at the aft of the ship which was great, because it was off the main hallway and accessible only by a seperate door that led to our room and one other, so it was very quiet. We found the entertainment varied and interesting and a wonderful thing to watch after dinner in the beautiful dining room. We received the classic beverage package as part of our cruise and did not plan to upgrade to the premium, but at $10 per day we found an extra $100 each for the cruise ( this included yummy coffees and cakes, when we wanted) to be good value. The cruise itself was like a wonderful dream, the staff could not be more helpful, and the destinations themselves were well chosen and exciting. I myself am a big shopper but over a 15 day holiday I only spent $700 AUD in total which is unheard of for me, I think this was because lunch was the only expense when you explored the islands ( although having it on the ship was always an option), and I did more self tours than shopping. The total of the holiday including flights with QATAR from Perth and 4 nights at a beautiful Hotel in central Rome, the cruise, insurances, transfers was just under $5000 AUD. I would definitely recommend the Celebrity Reflection. I look forward to traveling on another of the Celebrity fleet next year.

B2B Rome excursions

Cool Cruiser

Considering B2B cruises on the Ascent in the Fall of 2024. Rome is the disembarkation stop on first leg. Does Celebrity offer excursions for disembarkation/embarkation stops? I am familiar with the ones in Florida where the excursion ends at the airport but in this case we would want to return to the ship for the next leg.

You could book private tours, depends on much time you will have.

Maybe.  It's usually dependent on demand. IF (big if) enough request, they'll arrange a B2B tour to Windsor from Southampton.  It's probably the same from Civitavecchia.

5,000+ Club

Likely you will not know until you are on the ship for the first sailing.  Having done many B2Bs, I don't think I ever recall an excursion posted prior to sailing.

But honestly, if you want to do Rome, it is incredibly simple from Civitavecchia via the train to do it on your own.

There are a lot of good private touring companies that you can hire that will pick you up at the pier, take you to Rome, and have you back before the ship sails.

If you book a private excursion for turn around day, be aware that the onboard time is early.  We chose to enjoy civitavecchia  that day.  Did this last May after TA.

We have Civitavecchia as a turn around day on our Fall cruise - what do you recommend to do in port?  We usually just hang around the ship in Civitavecchia, but this time I'd like to get off.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Recommend you get off the ship. Many nice cafes on the waterfront and a nice walk along the water.  We wandered thru the city and went thru the market place.  For us not a long enough time to go into Rome. Some historical places also.

Thanks for the info. We've stayed and been to Rome so many times that we wouldn't even attempt on a turn around day. The waterfront and market place sound nice!

The OP asked about Rome.

As it is an 45 minutes or more to Rome if everything goes perfectly or about 1.5 hours using the port shuttle bus, a taxi and train - very risky.

There are interesting ruins right in Civitavecchia and a could nice places for lunch.   Also ruins north of town you could access with a rental car.  Pickup available 1 minute from the port shuttle bus stop.

That's why I said " It's probably the same from Civitavecchia."  Southampton was mentioned as an general example.

Cruise from Barcelona to Rome

Explore two of Europe’s most awe-inspiring metropolises

Cruises From Barcelona to Rome

Explore the very best of Italy, France, and Spain on a cruise from Barcelona to Rome with Celebrity Cruises on the ground-breaking Celebrity Edge. Marvel at the lavender-scented fields and hill villages of Provence, the glamorous beaches of the Côte d’Azur, the candy-colored fishing villages of Italy’s Cinque Terre, and the extraordinary archaeological site of Pompeii, outside Naples.

Or choose a voyage that visits the island of Ibiza, famed for its gorgeous beaches and bohemian lifestyle, exquisite Portofino, and Ajaccio, the pretty capital of craggy Corsica. From bustling La Spezia, gaze at the art treasures of dreamy Florence, or the dramatic Leaning Tower of Pisa. As you sail Europe’s ravishingly beautiful coastlines, sink into a sofa on the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, for spectacular sea views.

Make time at either end of your voyage to explore Barcelona and Rome, two of Europe’s most famed cities. Stroll Barcelona’s Las Ramblas boulevard, lose yourself in the tangled alleys of the Gothic Quarter, and admire Gaudi’s magnificent basilica, La Sagrada Familia. In Rome, the mighty Colosseum and the priceless treasures of the Vatican are just two of many reasons to stay longer.

Take a day trip to the forested ravines of the Prunelli Gorges, high in the mountains, or join a snorkel tour in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean and look out for sea stars, colorful fish, and octopus.

Cruise day 1: barcelona.

Check-in for your Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona at Port of Barcelona. You are about to board the innovative and beautiful Celebrity Edge.

Settle into your cabin, unpack your suitcase, and head to the buffet restaurant for lunch. Or grab your favorite glass of bubble and relax on deck for the sail-away party!

Before you leave home, we recommend that you download  Celebrity Cruises app  onto your mobile telephone. It’s a great way to easily check in for your cruise, stay connected with family and friends on the ship, plan your activities, make reservations and see all that’s happening on board. And you do not need wifi to use it!

Cruise Day 2: València, Spain

Situated on Spain’s southeast coast, València is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Spain. It has a beautiful medieval center, full of shops and outdoor flower markets.

The cruise port is located only 4km from the city center. Most cruise lines will offer a free shuttle bus ride into the center. Check this with guest services on board before you arrive in València.

The local buses are a great way to get around if you plan to explore alone. It costs €1.5 per journey, and you pay when you climb on board.

If you want to be out in nature and visit lagoons and woodlands, L’Albufera Natural Park  is just 10km outside the city center. We recommend downloading the EMT València app to help you navigate the local bus system.

Blue flag beaches and crystal clear water

Walking distance from the center is the beautiful La Malvarrosa beach. The promenade is packed with restaurants and cafés and is easily reachable from the port. Hammocks and parasols are easy to rent there. There are over 20km of sandy beaches in the city, and it is possible to rent a bike and cycle from one to the other if you are active and want to explore the coastline!

For easy sightseeing, start in the center at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The town hall of València dominates the square. This domed building is adorned with glazed tiles and balconies.

Many guided tours start at this point. Enjoy musical events, parades, and the wonderful Art Nouveau buildings. And if you don’t want to walk, you can ride on a Tuk Tuk for a few euros.

Shop at Valencia’s central market, Mercado Central, then head to the gothic cathedral, where you can climb the bell tower for sweeping views of the city and beyond. If you are a real foodie, we recommend joining one of the cruise lines’ food tours for fantastic local Spanish cuisine.

Cruise Day 3: Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is a sunny and fun Spanish island and our favorite in the Balearics. This evergreen island is just 572 square kilometers with 170km of coastline.

Olive and fig trees grow abundantly in this year-round destination. You’ll dock near the island’s capital. From here you can explore the town on foot. It’s quite a long walk to the center, so take a taxi from the harborside if it’s a hot day.

The island is great fun and very relaxed, with countless bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s also fantastic for kayaking, snorkeling, or a scenic bike tour.

Two of our favorite shore excursions in the port of Ibiza are a historical walking tour of the old medieval town and a visit to the stunning Caves of Can Marçà. The cave tour combined with snorkeling is a great excursion for kids too.

Cruise Day 4: Day at Sea

Spend your first day at sea relaxing on board your cruise ship. Check the Celebrity app to see what activities are scheduled and join in as much or as little as you want to.

Familiarize yourself with the ship, check the dining options, book a massage or relax by the pool. See what’s happening in the Grand Plaza, relax with a sea view on al fresco seating in Eden, or order a drink at the restaurant on the magic carpet.

Alternatively, use this time to read up on your next ports and cruise destinations to make the most of shore days. And if you haven’t already planned a shore excursion, speak to the cruise destinations team on board to see what is available. It may be possible to book some places at last-minute availability at a reasonable price.

Cruise Day 5: Provence, France (Port of call: Marseilles)

Excursions from the port of  Marseilles  offer you the chance to experience the Provence region and see France as it was centuries ago. Medieval buildings and picturesque villages line narrow cobblestone lanes. The area is well known for its lavender fields, olive groves, and vineyards.

This stunning area is also known for its cuisine, with ingredients that grow profusely in the Mediterranean region. Provençal cuisine is made up of fresh, local produce and recipes that have been handed down through generations.

Marseilles offers many sights to visit, and we can warmly recommend a city tour with a guide if you love history. You visit sights such as Quai des Belges, the Chateau d’If, and Notre Dame de la Garde.

If you want to visit Marseilles without a guide, there is a free local shuttle bus from the port to the center. Reach the shuttle bus with a quick 5-minute walk from the ship. Follow the green walkway, and the shuttle bus is signposted. There is no need to book and pay for the cruise line’s shuttle bus transfer.

Take a stroll through Marseilles’s old quarter. You’ll find many art galleries and antique shops. Or enjoy their world-famous signature dish bouillabaisse at any one of the restaurants in town. Stick to the busy touristy areas of Marseille and beware of pickpockets.

Cassis and Calanques National Park are on your doorstep

Further afield, you can visit Calanques National Park. Take advantage of Celebrity’s excursion with the transportation. The National Park is about a half hour from the port.

The rugged coastline calls for good walking shoes. Alternatively, a boat trip from Marseilles to Cassis takes miles of the beautiful coastal landscape. Once in Cassis, the little fishing town is lovely; if you are lucky, it will be market day. The market takes place every Wednesday and Friday morning. Try the pastries, olives, cheese, and sausage.

Cruise Day 6: Portofino, Italy

Portofino is the picture-perfect coastal town in Liguria, Italy, which you will want to return to repeatedly. This is one of the most popular cruise destinations.

The first image you will see is the colorful houses of the fishing villages. The Hotel Splendido has hosted many celebrities, and the town is a magnet for tourists; it’s easy to see why.

When visiting Portofino on your cruise itinerary, your cruise ship with drop anchor offshore, and you will use tender boats to get to the port. Other cruises may have Genoa as a port of call, in which case a day trip to Portofino is possible as a cruise ship shore excursion.

When your tender boat has reached the harbor, it’s an easy walk into town. Include downtown Piazzetta, the lighthouse, and the castle in your exploration.

One of the most popular walking trails in this port stop is from Portofino to quaint and colorful Santa Margherita along the coastal trail. The walk is about one and a half hours and gives you fantastic views.

Do this if you are relatively fit and be aware of traffic along the coastal road. After enjoying a drink and one of the many bars in the marina at Santa Margherita, tack the bus or ferry back to Portofino.

Cruise Day 7: Florence, Pisa

Your next stop on your Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona and Celebrity Edge is docked in La Spezia, Italy.

If you do not want to wander far from the ship, explore art galleries, museums, and castles in La Spezia. Visit the Castle of San Giorgio, located on top of a hill overlooking the port with its magnificent views. Alternatively, take a boat trip up the River Magra to view its medieval bridges and wetlands.

Choosing what to do or which excursion to book for your port of call in La Spezia can be challenging. As the entrance port to many fantastic Italian destinations, you have the opportunity to visit Cinque Terre, Pisa or Florence, Siena, and Lucca. Each one in itself is great, and the surrounding areas are stunning.

Stunning Cinque Terre

If you want an adventure out in nature and love hiking, choose Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is a group of five villages that stretch along Italy’s Riviera di Levante, with a dramatic section known as the Cinque Terre National Park.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can visit the five villages Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare.

Book this day with your cruise line, or book train tickets or a guided tour in advance. Cinque Terre is a few hours away from La Spezia, so be sure you don’t miss your cruise departure time. We promise – it’s well worth the journey!

Pisa or Florence?

An alternative to visiting Cinque Terre is to take a trip to the city of Pisa or Florence.

Pisa may well have been on your bucket list for a long time. Who doesn’t want to stand next to the famous leaning tower?

In our opinion, Florence offers a richer experience. In Florence, you can discover the Uffizi Gallery, where you can view Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, climb the world-famous Duomo cathedral or walk the postcard-perfect Ponte Vecchio bridge.

Don’t worry if you feel you need longer here. Florence is a beautiful destination to visit again. Make this city part of a more extended trip to the region of Tuscany in your future travel plans!

Cruise Day 8: Rome

Your last stop on your cruise, Rome , is a city worth waiting for. And probably the most important city in European history.

Enjoy your final breakfast on board, and remember to leave a review of the cruise line at guest services. A cruise line can only improve by knowing what the guests think about the cruise. So don’t be shy about making comments. Guest services can give you a cruise line questionnaire to complete before leaving the ship.

Disembark at Port of Civitavecchia. Transfer to your  hotel in Rome  using an official taxi standing right outside your cruise terminal. Check-in may be possible; alternatively, leave your luggage with the concierge and check in later.

Day 11-13: Exploring Rome

Now start exploring the city and enjoying the first of 2 nights in Rome.

If you are not extending your stay in Rome after your cruise, transfer back to the airport. Officially named Rome Fiumicino International Airport, it is also known as Leonardo da Vinci International.

Booking your transfer in advance with the cruise line is wise as places on board the airport buses can become full. Remember, if you have a morning flight booked to take you home, ask the cruise line for an early check out from the ship.

Get more ideas about how to spend your time in Rome  here. We have written detailed itineraries for four spectacular days of sightseeing in this fantastic historic city, including these highlights:

  • The Jewish Quarter, Trastevere, and The Vatican
  • Piazza Navona, The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain
  • The Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese
  • Ancient Rome,Vittoriano and the Colosseum

Rome is on the bucket list of many travelers. Visiting the eternal city is an unforgettable experience. It is known for its art, culture, and history. Whether traveling as a couple or with kids, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Two nights in this great city is the perfect way to end your Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Rome.

Essential cruise trip items

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

  • I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
  • Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
  • Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

Insider Today

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

celebrity cruise excursions rome

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

celebrity cruise excursions rome

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

celebrity cruise excursions rome

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

celebrity cruise excursions rome

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

celebrity cruise excursions rome

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.

What to Wear in Spain for Every Occasion

By Kerry Spencer

Last updated: April 24th, 2024

What to wear in Spain

  • Find a Cruise

What to wear in Spain on vacation runs the gamut from swimwear to pretty day-to-night dresses and cool linens. Dressing in Spain will, however, largely depend on which part of the country you are traveling to, when you are visiting, and what you plan on doing when you’re there.

If you are visiting Seville in the height of summer, your focus will be on keeping cool. Are you planning on beach hopping around the Canary Islands? Stylish swimwear and protecting your skin from the sun are important. And if your plans include touring ancient churches in cities such as Bilbao or Barcelona, opt for stylish but respectable daytime attire.

Decide exactly how you’ll be spending your precious vacation time then consider writing a checklist of everything you think you will need (and want) to wear to narrow down outfits. Keep cool, stay elegant, and ensure your sultry Spanish vacation remains stress-free with this comprehensive guide on how to dress in Spain.

Dress for the Season

Couple exploring a plaza in Barcelona

How to dress in Spain largely depends on the season and the type of weather the season has in store. Check typical temperatures in your destination at the time of year you are visiting, then consider what activities you plan on doing.

Vigo , in Galicia, will be cooler than, say, Cartagena, in Murcia, in summertime. Barcelona in spring and fall can be mild and might require a light jacket, though summertime is typically hot. In southern Spain—Cadiz, Seville, and Malaga—summer is usually sizzling hot.

The Canary Islands are warm year-round, though occasionally breezy, given their Atlantic Ocean location, while the Balearics (Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza) are similar to Spain’s mainland, typically mild during spring and fall, and hot during summer.

Dress for the Destination

Couple exploring Alhambra, Granada

Alhambra, Granada

So you’re going on vacation to Spain? It’s a huge country with golden beaches, hilltop monasteries, and historic fortresses. When you know exactly where you’ll be traveling, you can dress for your destination.

From conquering Tenerife’s Mount Teide to lazing on Barcelona’s beaches , and exploring Malaga’s museums, how you plan to spend your time on vacation will inform how you dress. Consider activewear, beach wear, elegant smart-casual dresses to suit the city and the coast, and outdoors gear if you plan on visiting national parks and mountains.

Layers Are a Smart Move

What to wear in Spain - Barcelona

How to dress in Spain includes layering up at the right time. This might mean a cover-up dress over a swimsuit on a beach or a Merino wool button-up over a vest top or a T-shirt.

If you’re hiking or the weather is likely to be changeable in your destination, it’s worth considering a layer to add or take away from your outfit as the temperature cools or heats up.

For example, you could use layering to create a more casual look by wearing a dressy top under an open linen shirt or a casual denim jacket.

Consider How Active You Will Be on Vacation

People preparing for a kayak adventure in Mallorca

Kayaking in Mallorca

Spain offers ample opportunities for outdoor adventures. If a seafront bike ride, a kayak session on the open water, or a fragrant cliff-top hike are likely to feature on your vacation, go for an athleisure look.

Wear swimwear under a loose-fitting T-shirt and shorts, and aqua shoes for kayaking. If you plan on paddleboarding, surfing, or jet-skiing off of some of Spain’s best beaches , a rash vest or swimsuit is suitable.

Family biking in Malaga

Biking in Malaga

For hikes in Spain , consider breathable shorts and a T-shirt or a polo shirt for a coastal wander, and add a sweater for loftier yomps where you might experience cooler temperatures the higher you trek. Leggings and water-repellant sweaters are also a good idea.

More strenuous hikes—such as Teide National Park in Tenerife or Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca —may require sturdier hiking boots.

Similarly, you will feel most comfortable in shorts or cycle shorts, paired with a vest or T-shirt and sneakers for a cycle or beach walk. Whatever active excursion you are planning, wear sunglasses and a sun hat or a cap, too.

Planning on City Sightseeing? Go Elegant, But Comfortable

Woman sightseeing in Barcelona

What to wear in Spain also depends on how much sightseeing you plan on doing. If you want to fit in, bear in mind that the Spanish are generally stylish dressers, especially in the cities.

Logowear, Hawaiian shirts and baseball caps will have you stand out as a tourist. While there’s nothing wrong with this, in busy places like the Ramblas Boulevard in Barcelona , where pickpockets are active, it helps to blend in.

If your itinerary takes you from the Sagrada Familia to Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter , consider elegant but comfortable daywear. A floral-print sundress, sun hat, sunglasses, and flat sandals work for a chic daytime look. Loose drawstring pants—patterned, floral, or plain—and cotton dresses are also suitable.

If you’d like to pare your outfit down, linen is a failsafe, lightweight fabric that will keep you cool and look elegant in vacation photos. Pair a crisp white or black linen shirt and shorts in combination with some jaunty sandals or espadrilles.

Espadrilles at a store in Spain

Espadrilles

Espadrilles—a lightweight style of footwear with a braided sole made of a natural fiber such as jute or grass—originate in Spain and can be bought in cities such as Malaga and Barcelona.

Stylish sneakers are, of course, absolutely fine to wear in Spain, especially if you’re planning on doing a lot of walking while exploring. Heels are not suitable in old towns, where cobblestone lanes are common, such as in Bilbao , Barcelona, and Malaga.

For men, wearing a linen shirt with tailored shorts is also a great way of staying cool and remaining stylish, while exploring some of Spain’s most beautiful sights such as Bilbao Cathedral, Malaga’s Gibralfaro Castle, and Granada’s Moorish Alhambra. Polo T-shirts, short-sleeve shirts, and lightweight slacks are also appropriate attire in Spain.

Jeans Are Fine to Wear in Spain

Couple on a tapas tasting in Malaga

Bootcut, straight-leg, boyfriend-style, and cropped—if you’re a fan of wearing jeans, you’ll be pleased to know it is fine to wear them in Spain. You may want to check the weather forecast first, though.

If it’s going to be hot, you might want to wear something more lightweight or opt for denim shorts of a respectable length. Rural areas are quite conservative so avoid anything too skimpy.

If the weather forecast is predicted to be mild or even warm, consider a cropped or straight-leg cut in a light blue or white denim, paired with a loose-fitting shirt, T-shirt, or top, with sneakers, espadrilles, or even sandals to create a classy vacation look.

Opt for Cool & Chic on the Beach

Couple walking at the beach

If you are planning to spend time on one or more of Spain’s beautiful golden beaches—such as La Concha in San Sebastian or La Tejita in Tenerife —chic beachwear is essential. Wear a stylish one- or two-piece swimsuit and plan fashionable beach attire around the color and style of your chosen swimwear.

Halterneck, one-shoulder, strapless, and cut-out swimsuits are fashionable options. Adult rash vests are becoming increasingly popular to protect your skin from the sun, too.

Woman wearing a coverup at the beach

Consider a beach cover-up, such as a sheer, silk, or crocheted tunic dress or top with a sarong that complements the color of your bathing suit. Sheer kimonos and even loose-fitting maxi dresses are perfect beach attire for the more fashion-conscious travelers.

Sunglasses and a sun hat are non-negotiable. For footwear, opt for espadrilles, sandals, or flip-flops.

For men, depending on your style, you may want loose-fitting (cotton blend) beach shorts and a loose cotton shirt, along with swim shorts or trunks. Boat shoes present a stylish beach look, too, and are perfect for going from the beach to a harborside restaurant.

In Mallorca, you’ll see a lot of people who look as though they’ve stepped straight off a superyacht, which many of them will have done. In Ibiza , the fashion is white, floaty clothing, which you’ll find on sale everywhere.

Choose Sophisticated Outfits for Lunches, Wine Tastings, & Gallery Hopping

Family at a cafe in Ibiza

Don glamorous resort wear if your Spanish vacation will take you to upmarket restaurants, wine tasting at vineyards, and art galleries. Floaty maxi dresses, sundresses, and A-line dresses are among the outfit options to wear for a more sophisticated look in Spain.

Comfortable linen pants or structured trousers cropped at the ankle, paired with a simple white T-shirt, blouse, or an embellished top will also leave you feeling glamorous on vacation. Swop flip-flops for dressier sandals or loafers to complete your elegant daytime look.

Don’t Forget Stylish Accessories

Colorful pashminas at a market in Spain

From a colorful pashmina over a little black dress, and a jeweled clutch bag paired with a playsuit, to gold, silver, and diamond jewelry, accessories can turn an elegant outfit into an uber-stylish one.

Consider wearing a stylish embossed belt to liven up a simple two-piece or summery dress. From oversized to aviators, and cat-eye, finish your ensemble off with a pair of practical, but stylish sunglasses.

Add stylish accessories to your Spanish wardrobe if you plan to go museum and gallery hopping and enjoy leisurely lunches in places such as Seville, Valencia , and Barcelona, to add a touch of glamor to your outfit.

You’ll find great shopping in any Spanish city ; both Mango and Zara are Spanish fashion labels and have big stores in every major city. El Corte Ingles is one of the biggest department stores, with a huge range of designer labels.

Frequently Asked Questions About What to Wear in Spain

What should i not wear in spain.

Couple exploring a town in Ibiza

If you’re traveling to Spain in summer, avoid heavy-material clothes that will leave you feeling hot and bothered. Steer away from Spanish cliches, too, such as flamenco costumes and matador hats when exploring Seville to avoid your outfit screaming “tourist”.

Sports jerseys are not always a good look and it’s important to be considerate of dressing reasonably modestly when visiting Spanish churches and other religious buildings, too. For example, a revealing dress and high heels are not usually appropriate.

Do not wear beachwear outside of the beach. Flip flops, too, are not ideal for covering thousands of steps in a city or on a hike. For more casual footwear, brands such as Crocs, Toms, and Birkenstocks, and styles such as flat leather and raffia-fabric sandals are most suitable. Remember that a lot of small villages in Spain have uneven, cobblestone streets so comfortable shoes are important.

Is it OK to wear shorts?

Couple exploring a beach in Spain

Beach in Spain

When you’re on vacation in Spain, it is fine to wear shorts, but try and keep them to the beach and when doing more action-packed trips, say to Siam Park in Tenerife, Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote , or the Maspalomas Dune Reserve in Gran Canaria.

If you’re going on a wine-tasting trip or planning a city walking tour, followed by lunch at an upscale restaurant, shorts are not the most appropriate option unless they are smartly tailored.

What do locals wear?

Locals walking in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona

Gothic Quarter, Barcelona

Local dress according to the season and place—they’re typically stylish, but practical. This might mean jeans and a T-shirt or pants and shirt combination. It might also mean floaty, floral dresses or other summertime two pieces with sandals and a neck scarf.

What should I wear to dinner?

Family eating at a restaurant in Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

An elegant outfit is the way to go for dinner. A smart dress or stylish pants with a blouse combination works well. Go with heels if that’s your preference, but pretty sandals or espadrilles are equally suitable. Complete your look with a selection of accessories. Bear in mind that when you’re dining outside in summer, temperatures are still very high at night.

What about sneakers?

Family walking the streets of Barcelona

Sneakers are fine in the right situation. If you plan on doing a lot of exploring on foot or getting active on a hike, for example, you should wear sneakers on vacation in Spain. Avoid wearing them to nice restaurants and cocktail bars, however.

The 10 best cruises for teens in 2024.

The best cruises for teens provide the right mix of autonomy and time with family.

The Best Cruises for Teens

At Edge aboard the Disney Wish, tweens ages 11 to 14 years old play games and make new friends in a bright, colorful hangout inspired by a chic New York City loft.

Teen spaces on cruise ships foster friendships through games, music, events and more.

Cruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

Find your perfect cruise

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line

The Edge on Disney Cruise Line ship.

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

Royal Caribbean International

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

If you're hanging out in the new Surfside neighborhood on Icon, a dedicated space for young families, teens will have easy access to the supervised teens-only club, Social 020, from this open-air space.

When you head ashore to Perfect Day in CocoCay, one of the best  cruise line private islands , teen cruisers will find plenty of fun land-based activities like Thrill Waterpark and 1,600-foot-long zip lines. Be sure not to miss another thrilling experience: Up, Up and Away. The helium balloon ride soars 450 feet above the ground to the highest vantage point in the Bahamas , offering incredible panoramic views of the island and surrounding turquoise waters.

Holland America Line

Club HAL for teens (Deck 10 Midship Starboard) on Rotterdam by Holland America Line.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Holland America Line

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

The Kids Club is complimentary for guests. The space is open daily, and you'll also find teen events around the ship. When it comes to dining, there are many teen-friendly dining options – where teens can even enjoy mocktails like nonalcoholic mojitos – at venues throughout the ship.

If you're cruising to Alaska with Holland America or other adventure-filled destinations, look for excursions that will appeal to younger family members like zip lining tours, trail hikes, float trips, helicopter tours and wilderness safaris. Alaska is a teen favorite, especially in Skagway (one of Alaska's top destinations ), where travelers can get a thrill out of dog mushing with a team of Alaskan huskies, taking a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, or going on a rock climbing excursion.

Princess Cruises

Teens play Connect Four on Princess Cruises ship.

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. These offerings include Discovery Family and Animal Planet shore excursions and onboard entertainment like "The Voice of the Ocean," a musical competition.

Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. More indoor fun can be found at Thrill Theater (on Horizon and Vista ), an immersive cinematic experience where you'll feel the seat rumble, the wind blow through your hair and even a spritz of water during the action-packed video.

Celebrity Cruises

The Basement (Deck 2 Midship) on Celebrity EDGE by Celebrity Cruises.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. On Caribbean sailings – especially when school is out for summer or on holidays – Celebrity has additional family-friendly shore excursions on its five- and seven-night sailings.
