The 20 Australian Artists to Watch in 2023

From tulmur to margeret river, covering everything from punk to electronic to folk, we’ve rounded up twenty aussie artists we think are set for a huge 2023.

Our annual ones to watch article ( here's last years ) is back to uncover some emerging gems in Australian music, who we think are on the right track to have a triumphant year ahead. With an incredibly large and talented pool to choose from, the decision was not easy… however based on their great sounds, accomplishments so far, and for some their plans that have already been announced for 2023, the Pilerats team have narrowed it down to the 20 artists that we think you should listen to right now and keep your eye on over the next 12 months.

So without further ado, feast your eyes (and ears) on The 20 Australian Artists to Watch in 2023.

Agung Mango

Bubbling up from Australia’s underground rap scene is the gritty experimental punk, jazz and alt R&B influenced sounds of rapper Agung Mango . Already appearing at Laneway Festival, Spilt Milk and Golden Plains in addition to supporting Wiki, Milan Ring, DJ Pee. Wee (Anderson .Paak), and Genesis Owusu on his national tour, 2022 saw Agung showcase at Bigsound, and release his EP Man On The Go ( read more ) - which was treated to a national tour. Kicking off 2023 strong already, supporting Freddie Gibbs on an AU wide tour, we're excited to see what’s next for this Naarm/Melbourne based rapper.

Asha Jefferies

Hailing from the Northern Rivers and raised in Meanjin/Brisbane, Asha Jefferies combines the patience of folk with the urgency of youthful pop to create meaningful, catchy, and at times melancholic songs that tell a story. Previously supporting Julia Jacklin, Thelma Plum, Babe Rainbow, in addition to her own headline nationwide tours, 2022 saw Asha entering a new phase - not only by showcasing at Bigsound ‘22 and taking out the Best Folk Award at the Queensland Music Awards 2022, but by finding her queer identity and embracing the love and expression that has come along with it. The result is the single Tank Tops ( read more ), which has sparked suspicion of more great releases in 2023 - in addition to an upcoming tour with Hope D.

When it comes to raw post-punk that combines electronic production with grunge and shoegaze flavours, Naarm/Melbourne’s ENOLA has you covered, detailing vulnerable, hard-hitting narratives into infectious tracks that leave a lasting effect. Julia Jacklin

Julia’s assertive charm comes across in both her music and her on stage presence, the only difference being she is funnier in between her songs in which she contemplates what it means to be a woman viewed through her own lens, that of the men she’s loved, and of a perspective that shift as time goes on. Her voice is powerful and note perfect and especially enjoyable when she closed the show with an April Lavigne cover.

Moses Sumney

Moses was amazing. Very enigmatic but still approachable, and he had a lot of fun with the crowd. The performance was incredible, his voice is truly something to behold. I've listened to "Worth It" a million times but still got chills when he hit the high note. Would highly recommend seeing Moses live, especially before he gets really famous and expensive to see.

Absolutely the best concert I was ever at, honestly I don't think any other artist could top this. She had such an incredible presence on stage, every eye was on her and her wonderful team. Dua and her dancers moved gracefully and fluidly, with bursts of power and energy. Her vocals were insanely beautiful, every word was sung with such passion and love. Her grand finale of IDGAF and New Rules was simply amazing, with breathtaking choreography and stunning visuals behind her. The band sounded great and the backup vocalists and dancers were on point for every minute. Without a doubt in my mind it was the very best live performance I have ever seen, and I don't think anything in the future will ever compare to it. Dua Lipa, Olympia Theatre, Dublin. Monday 9th April 2018.

Arcade Fire

They say perfection doesn't exist, well that's wrong when it comes to Arcade Fire. The show was perfect, almost surreal- definitely the concert of the year by far. The set list on the Wednesday show was as of it was made for me, playing songs I never thought I would hear live, it was an emotional experience. The lighting, costumes, music transitions, props was amazing, and the boxing type ring stage was incredibly clever, allowing them to be closer to the fans and yet providing a different show on every side. Words can't explain what I felt during and after the concert, it was playful, clever, emotional, energetic- Such an amazing band, I'm so glad I found them- I don't know how I was alive before finding them. They have such an incredible stage presence, I really truly recommend seeing them if you have the chance- they unite all ages and create magic and unity.

Tyler, The Creator

I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

I saw these guys at the Subterranean in Chicago-- what an insane show. They electrified the crowd with non stop moshing, shoving, and stage diving, it was absolute madness. By the end of the gig I was utterly soaked with other peoples beer (theres always someone with a sloshing cup in a pit; why? just drink it!) and dripping with sweat. this show was epic, if you ever have the opportunity to see these guys you have to seize it-- they put on one hell of a show.

Our final Cover Story of 2022 focuses on five Australian artists we think you need to watch in 2023. Read on to find out who they are!

artists on tour in australia 2023

The Music has published over 45 Cover Stories in 2022, sharing stories told by your favourite artists, including Missy Higgins , Hatchie , Sampa The Great , Flume , Ball Park Music , Spacey Jane , Tasman Keith , Parkway Drive , Thelma Plum , King Stingray , Pania , Cub Sport , Mia Wray , Jimmy Barnes and many more.

When we were thinking about the final Cover Artist of the year, we thought, why stop at one artist? Why not share a take on Most Anticipated lists and introduce our readers to Five Artists To Watch In 2023? And so, this Cover Story was born. Find Q&A's with each artist below.

Beckah Amani

Beckah Amani waltzed gracefully onto the scene in 2018 with her single, Breathe, but really caught people's attention with her 2020 single STANDARD , which was a sort of reclamation of self relating to the Black Lives Matter movement and her own experience with micro-aggressions and outright racism. Her music could be compared to SZA or Arlo Parks, with a bit more of an upbeat swing.

Born in Tanzania before emigrating to Australia when she was eight, Amani embodies her West African heritage, creating a warm and joyful sound with rich vocals and funky beats. Recently winning the triple j Unearthed x SPRINGTIME Festival competition, the 2022 APRA Professional Development Award for Popular Contemporary Album, and the coveted QMA Award for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2021, Amani is clearly sought after, making her an artist to watch next year.

Q: You released your debut EP, April, this year - what behind-the-scenes stories can you share with our audience?

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

A: Feels so good to finally have my debut EP, April,  out in the world! In the track April,  you can hear a voice memo at the beginning of the verses and the outro. Those voice memo clips were actually taken from a real voice memo my dad sent to me a few weeks after moving to London.

In my native language of Kirundi, dad basically asks me how I’m really going, if I am ok, and to call back when I get a moment. My response to his voice note is what forms the body of the song. It was special to have my dad (unknowingly) a part of this track.

Q: What inspired your creative process for what’s coming next in 2023?

A: All things lead back to storytelling for me. I’ve spent a lot of time in transit this year, and that gave me a lot of time to read and watch lots of movies. I’ve been inspired to create a cohesive world in my next project in 2023 that ties these things and music together.

Q: We’ve gone from two years of uncertainty surrounding the music industry to playing live shows again; what have the past couple of years taught you?

A: It has been such a rollercoaster, hasn’t it? The past couple of years has taught me that life isn’t linear. It’s bound to change, explode, expand and shrink. The only thing I’m in control of is how I respond to the circumstances and ride the waves. I’ve learned not to take people and the freedom to be with others physically for granted. It has also made me appreciate going and playing live music so much more.

Q: How did you find hope to continue throughout the last few years?

A: Family and loved ones. Not letting my output of work (music) define my worth. Seeing people show up for each other. Finding beauty in the ordinary. Being present with people, place and self. Accepting that I am on my own journey, not competing with time, relevancy and other artists.

Q: What music did you release this year or to be released next year are you proudest of?

A: I’m really proud of my debut EP. I am particularly proud of the track Smoke And Mirrors . Working with Matt Corby was really special and a dream come true for me. I hope highlighting the issue of climate change in a delicate and thought-provoking way invites audiences to take this issue seriously.

Q: Every now and then, we hear people say that the album format is dead and that singles are the way to go. How do you feel about albums in general or on a personal level?

A: I personally love albums. I grew up listening to a whole body of work and appreciate singles as a small appetiser preparing you for a complete and nuanced meal. I personally don’t think the album format is dead at all. However, I believe that how people consume and interact with music has changed. In saying that, ultimately, I do also think albums still hold a lot of weight and that fans eagerly wait to hear a full body of work.

Q: What do you want audiences to learn about as an artist and your music coming into 2023?

A: Writing is my favourite part of the creative process. I spend a lot of time working on lyrics and carving storylines. In 2023 audiences can expect a cohesive second body of work that leans into my passion for reading and films.

Q: What were your favourite musical moments of the year? They can be your own, a gig you saw, a song on tv, or something totally unexpected. What moments profoundly moved you?

A: Damn, there's just so many! I’ve spent the majority of my time in London this year, so I’ve collected most of these moments from London. Here are a few; seeing Tems live at the KOKO was inspiring. Ed Sheeran at Wembley was electrifying and emotional for me. I was greatly moved by Sampa The Great, and her track Never Forget  featuring Chef 187, Tio Nason & Mwanje. Absolutely world-class!

Folk Bitch Trio

Folk Bitch Trio made up of Melbourne singer-songwriters Heide Peverelle, Gracie Sinclair  and Jeanie Pilkington,  formed their group in 2020. Their raw, melancholy guitar melodies and harmonies have received comparisons with Julia Jacklin, boygenius and Swedish favourites First Aid Kit.

After watching the group at BIGSOUND this year, Double J's Dan Condon said, "I'd put money on the word 'sublime' being used to describe Melbourne's Folk Bitch Trio plenty in the wake of their BIGSOUND performances too, and for good reason. Their flawless three-part harmonies are stunning throughout their entire set, their songwriting is already accomplished but will only get better, and they have a quiet self-assurance that makes them even more magnetic." That's high praise, and it's well deserved.

Q: You released Lost/Shivers and more singles this year - what behind-the-scenes stories do you remember the most?

A: We recorded these two singles in very different environments…

Lost , we recorded in Audrey Studios with producer Anna Laverty and engineer Craig Pilkington in December 2021. We had just recently come out of what felt like an eternity of lockdowns and were feeling quite strange diving into our first actual studio project. We were there for five days and recorded a few songs we wrote a few years ago. It was extremely satisfying to get them out of our heads and have Anna and Craig facilitate and kindle our raw songs and turn them into something more fully formed. Shivers was recorded live this last winter in a cold warehouse, which felt fitting to the song written by Roland S. Howard. We teamed up with friends Pat Telfer who recorded the track, and Celeste De’clario, who captured a live video and our latest press shots while we tried to do the cover justice!

Q: What inspired you in 2022, and what's coming next year?

A: We’ve been inspired by watching and playing live music! Having the opportunity to see such refined and beautiful national and international acts has felt very special this last year. In the past, we’ve individually written a song and brought it to the group, but recently the three of us have been sitting down and collaborating more in our songwriting. It’s been scary but wonderful and has inspired us further. We’re looking forward to this next year of writing and recording new music!

Q: The uncertainty of the last few years has affected everyone differently. What have you learned in that time? How did you cope with Melbourne's lockdowns?

A: Despite the mess of the last couple of years, we’ve felt quite lucky and grateful for the opportunities we’ve had. It’s been interesting to enter the music scene at the beginning of the lockdown. In some ways, it was lucky because we didn’t really know what we were missing out on. Though we could recognise the devastating effects it had on the musicians and punters around us.

We didn’t put too much pressure on ourselves to create anything remarkable; we kept writing songs but only when it felt right to. We mostly prioritised getting together as mates rather than to make music until things opened up again.

Q: What music did you release this year or to be released next year are you proudest of?

A: Our collaboration with Bones and Jones, a band of dear friends from the  Naarm/Geelong area, was a special project to both release and record. We released a double 7” inch early on in the year, and it led us to some pretty memorable things, like our first festival sets and interstate tour. We played some beautiful sets up north in the Northern Rivers and Coolum Beach that wouldn’t have necessarily happened if we didn’t release the singles, so we’re pretty proud of where that project has taken us.

Q: We keep hearing that the album format is dead and that singles are the way to go. How do you feel about albums in general or on a personal level?

A: As a band and as individuals, we love and appreciate the artistry that goes into making a record and listening to one. Singles are great, but we are collectively very excited to make a whole body of work that shows more than a single can, and we feel like this art is very much alive.

Q: What do you want audiences to learn about your band in 2023?

A: Coming into 2023, we’re mostly just very grateful to be playing shows and having people listening to our music. People knowing who we are is exciting enough. We’re playing Auckland Folk Festival in January, which is super surreal to be starting the year overseas, and we are keen to keep the ball rolling on forwards from there. We have our sights set on continuing to play, write and record together in the new year.

Q: What were your favourite musical moments of the year? They can be your own, a gig you saw, a song on tv, or something totally unexpected. What moments deeply moved you?

A: The gigs that have moved us as artists in 2022 were a Phoebe Bridgers’ set in Munich, RVG’s set at Queenscliff Music Festival, our collective deep dive into Wilco’s discography, a surprise midnight Marlon Williams set at BIGSOUND (to name a few). A big one for us was supporting Julia Jacklin in April, who we are all huge admirers of. That felt pretty unreal.

Forest Claudette

Forest Claudette balances a heavenly falsetto with multiple genres of music, going from smooth R&B, deep beats and rap music to something edgier and more surprising. He has released three stellar singles to date, including his debut and second tracks, Creaming Soda and Gone Without A Trace, which have collectively received praise from the likes of   triple j, Teen Vogue, Tone Deaf, Sniffers, MTV, Attwood Magazine and more. Hologram followed in early September and arrived with the announcement of Claudette's debut EP, The Year Of February, at the end of that month. His talent and buzz surrounding him definitely make Claudette one to watch.

Q: You released your new EP, The Year Of February, this year. What can you tell us about your experience making it?

A: One of my favourite stories from the making of the EP is Goodbye . I wrote that song with my friend and producer, Alex Laska. It was one of my first co-writing sessions, and we’d planned on meeting at a cafe first, so when one hour passed and then two, and I couldn’t get a hold of him on his phone, I figured the session was likely cancelled, and I’d been stood up. Eventually, he arrived and had the courage to ask me if I’d eaten yet. I love Alex.

Q: What inspired your creative process this year?

A: I’ve spent a lot of time in LA this year (2022), so I’d say that dynamic of being away from home and missing loved ones, contrasted by the experiences I’ve had out here (in LA writing this), which have been for the most part really wonderful and forced me to learn more about myself.

A: These past two years definitely taught me patience, which I’m very grateful for. I also got to spend a lot of time with my parents, which I wouldn’t have otherwise. I feel like I’m at that age where you start to see your parents more and more as their own people, which in turn, allows me to understand myself better.

Q: How did you find hope to carry on throughout the last few years?

A: That time, for me, was very much centred around Blackness. I bought a bunch of Black literature from diaspora and Black American writers and just took in everything I could. I needed more context for what was unfolding before the world’s eyes, and I’d always intended to dedicate time like that to reading. That’s actually how I found my name. I read an article that had a brief summary of Claudette Colvin’s ( Before Rosa Parks, There Was Claudette Colvin: NPR ) role in overturning the segregation laws in Montgomery and Alabama.

Q: What music did you release this year that you're proudest of?

A: Finally releasing The Year Of February this year has been everything to me. In the end, I spent about four years writing that EP, and I think it did just about everything I wanted it to do. The most important part for me was making sure it captured some of the genre-bending that I wanted to establish early so as not to be boxed in while also finding a throughline when it came to the narrative. Moments from the beginning until now, all folded neatly into a 6-track EP - not bad if I do say so myself.

Q: Now and then, we hear people say that the album format is dead and that singles are the way to go. How do you feel about albums in general or on a personal level?

A: I love this because I’m absolutely an album listener. That’s how I consume music, and that’s how I feel close to the artists I look up to. I usually go through fazes of one or two albums at a time where that’s all I listen to - Little Simz just announced a new one, and I’m freaking the F**k out.

Q: What do you want audiences to learn about you as an artist coming into 2023?

A: I’m not sure if I’m too phased if people learn more about me or not. I’m really interested in how people connect with my experiences through their own though. I had a friend listen to some demos a year or two ago, and he got something out of the track that I had never intended, but it was so special to hear how he interpreted it. So now, with music coming out, those interactions with fans are what I look forward to most.

A: Playing my first live shows this year has been amazing, especially doing so with my band. They’ve been so patient and understanding when it’s come to this process, so to be able to finally share the stage and experience the energy from the crowd all together has been so special.

Besides that, this year was Omar Apollo’s year, as far as I’m concerned. That album [ Ivory ] slaps.

We first discovered LOSER  from their 2018 EP Restless Noise and instantly recognised the immense talent and well-crafted rock anthems that were brewing under this first release. Since then, the band have continuously hit milestones and honed their alt-rock craft. Dubbed as a cross between Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins, it wouldn’t be going too far to add Queensland's Violent Soho into that mix. Their latest release, All The Rage , introduces some more thoughtfulness to their sound and has proved that their ability to blend soft melody with heavy drums and grating guitars is unmatched.

The Melbourne natives have also dominated the touring circuit in the last few years, opening for Canadian legends PUP and Aussie favourites Luca Brasi.

Q: You released Heaven Can Wait and All The Rage and experienced huge career highlights this year - what behind-the-scenes stories can you share with our audience?

A: This year, we were finally able to tour again, and we completed an awesome national run supporting BUGS. Because flights were so expensive, we drove interstate for many of the shows; however, as we’re a two-piece and Tim doesn’t drive, the steering was left to me (Craig). For some, this would be a harrowing experience, but I’d like to take this opportunity to point out that Tim is the greatest co-pilot in the world. To make the drives easier, he curated them [playlists] beforehand - including specialised playlists for each section of the drive, pre-selected podcasts that we would both dig, trivia games and a devout commitment to never fall asleep as the passenger, so I always had someone to talk to. What a legend!

Q: What inspired your creative process for what’s to come in 2023?

A: In our band, we never stop writing. At any one point, we always have at least 100 unfinished songs we’re working on, and sometimes that can take us in all kinds of directions. What really helped focus our laser beam this year was an awesome weekend we spent with Anton Hagop (producer/mixer/engineer for artists like Silverchair, Powderfinger….and Loser ha). We hung out at Anton’s house and played him some demos, and Anton helped us to see the connecting thread that we couldn’t always spot ourselves. From this experience, our ears were opened, and we floated back to Melbourne with a new sense of self. From this, Stadium Dreams On A Bedroom Budget and the new era of Loser was born.

Q: We’ve gone from two years of uncertainty surrounding the music industry to playing live shows again. What did you learn during that period?

A: We’ve been a band for four years, two of which were spent inside. Throughout that, we still managed to release two full-length albums and the experience of doing all that taught us to stop looking over the fence. There’s too much focus on social media and comparisons, and it’s not until you eliminate these distractions that real personal growth can occur.

A: Sometimes, the cheesiest explanations are the most truthful, and with all sincerity, we found hope in each other. We had band members leave, tour cancellations, anxiety attacks, family losses and music industry friends pass away - but throughout it all, we had each other to keep grounded and inspired and to share the heaviness. This gave us both a newfound strength to get through it and be newly inspired on the other side.

A: This year, we released the first two songs from our EP, Stadium Dreams On A Bedroom Budget - Heaven Can Wait  and Hold On You . This EP will roll out one song at a time until May 2023. It’s the first Loser release we’ve recorded, engineered, produced and mixed ourselves in our own backyard studio,  Restless Noise . This isn’t a collection of singles; it's more like a Netflix series, where it’s an entire body of work designed to flow as a whole but presented piece by piece.

Q: People like insisting that albums are irrelevant and the format is dead. How do you feel about albums in general or on a personal level?

A: We love albums and still feel they are the ultimate way for artists to present their work. But clearly, we also see the value in staggering releases as this can help build momentum and give a release a longer life span. The beauty of current times is that an artist has the freedom to release music however they want. The best releases are always ones that tell their own story, so having the option to release a full album, singles, or both, is a great way to present the theme of a release and whatever is the most relevant format for that particular art should be the only deciding factor in whether it’s a full album or not.

Q: What do you want audiences to learn about you as a band and your music coming into 2023?

A: That we do this for no other reason than that we love it and that we shred guitar like motherfuckers.

A: My favourite musical moment of the year was having a front-row seat to the final Violent Soho shows. We were lucky enough to open the shows, and the feeling in the room of gratitude towards the band was palpable. Soho have given so much guidance to us and hundreds of others along their journey, and to be there as they hung up the boots on their victory lap was beyond special.

Rachael Fahim

Rachael Fahim started competing in talent quests at roughly ten years of age. She released her debut single, Say It, in 2015 and the follow-up, Rope,  in 2016, before winning Toyota Star Maker in 2017. Her prize pack included the recording of three singles and three video clips, a brand-new Toyota RAV4 with   an unlimited fuel card for 12 months, and guaranteed performances at major festivals throughout Australia.   She released her self-titled EP later that same year.

For the past three years, she’s been the second-highest streamed female country artist in Australian history after Kasey Chambers . She’s seen over 11 million audio streams since the release of her Iconic EP in 2019, which features the singles Brake Lights , Even If I Wanted To featuring Brad Cox and What I Don’t Know .

Last year, she released her smash hit single, Middle Ground , which spent a massive five weeks at #1 on the official Australian Country singles airplay chart. Fahim's latest solo single, Darts In The Dark, sat at #26 on the   Countrytown Hot 50 Country Airplay Chart upon release.

Q: You released City Girls In The Country this year - how did that release go down for you?

A: Yee haww, I did! Honestly, I don’t have a wild BTS story to go along with the making of City Girls, but what feels very BTS is how much fun the band and I had playing this live. The guys have agreed to wear wigs and get dolled up for a gig at some stage, so watch this space. It’s just such a fun song to perform live.

A: Lately, life has felt so hectic, as I’m sure many people can relate - I’m getting to the stage where I’m feeling like I’m spreading myself too thin. My creative process recently looks a lot like hanging at home in my comfies and relaxing. The ideas seem to flow way more when my mind is jam-packed! Next year is really just about releasing the songs that make me happy.

Q: We’ve gone from two years of uncertainty surrounding the music industry due to the pandemic to playing live shows again; what have the past couple of years taught you?

A: For me, the past couple of years have cemented the fact that there’s no rush. I already felt this way before we were all thrown into the deep end, but I do feel content and happy to take my time. To say no to things I don’t want to do and simply be happy about what I’m doing now.

Q: How did you get through the last couple of years?

A: In the beginning, I found it really hard - mainly because I am so used to doing everything at superduperhighspeed (thanks, ADHD), but I found hope in my relationships, my new activewear collection, and Zoom. What would we have done without Zoom!! It was actually really nice not to feel so much pressure to “get out there”, ya know.

A: Ahhhh, I can’t choose! Talk about pressure!

This is a tough question because I have so many faves, but if it comes down to being proud of the song, I have to say City Girls takes the crown (and I swear I’m not just saying this one because it’s my latest release!). This is the first song where I’ve spoken my mind and put my thoughts about something other than “love” into a song. As I’ve said - CGITC is a really fun song, but it’s also sassy and filled with my thoughts and feelings on how people have treated me during my time in the industry. Based on my background, based on where I live, based on assumptions. So yeah, I’m really proud of myself and this song.

Q: People say that the album format is dead and that singles are the way to go. How do you feel about albums in general or on a personal level?

A: I personally lean more toward releasing singles because that’s how I consume the music I listen to. However, I do love a good album. I’m not sure how I feel about releasing an album of my own, but I’m sure I will someday! I’ve got some ideas on how I’d do it in my own “RF way”, though!

A: I would love people to keep spreading the word about how awesome country music is, specifically - Australian country music/artists. I’d love for Australia to be as inclusive as America when it comes to country music being played everywhere and anywhere!

Q: What were your favourite musical moments of the year? They can be your own, a gig you attended, a song on tv, or something totally unexpected. What moments profoundly moved you?

A: Earlier this year, I performed at a festival, and after my set, I had a 45-minute-long line of people waiting for me to sign things. That just blew my mind and made me SO HAPPY. I just can’t get over it.

National Gallery announces 2023 Program

Key information

MEDIA RELEASE 1 FEB 2023

Two major First Nations exhibitions and ground-breaking works by prominent international and Australian contemporary artists, will headline the National Gallery of Australia’s artistic program in 2023.

National Gallery Director Dr Nick Mitzevich said this year’s program reinforces the Gallery's commitment to highlighting First Nations artists and collecting and exhibiting the pre-eminent works and artists of our times.

‘The National Gallery is celebrating the vitality and importance of First Nations art with two major exhibitions – Ngura Pulka – Epic Country and Emily Kam Kngwarray ,’ Mitzevich said.

‘As well as being one of Australia’s most-celebrated artists, Emily Kam Kngwarray is acknowledged as among the world’s most significant contemporary painters to have emerged in the 20th century.’

This extensive survey of Anmatyerre artist Kngwarreye’s work brings together the most important works of the artist’s oeuvre, from early vibrant batiks to her later monumental paintings on canvas.

Ngura Pulka – a landmark exhibition of major new works by artists from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands – is curated by Barbara Jean Humphreys Assistant Director, First Nations and Head Curator, First Nations Art Bruce Johnson McLean.

‘ Ngura Pulka is one of the largest and most significant First Nations, community-driven art projects to have ever been developed,’ Johnson McLean said.

‘The exhibition will present 30 major works by three generations of First Nations artists, including 27 large-scale three-by-three-metre paintings by individual artists, two astonishing three-by-five-metre collaborative paintings and an extraordinary installation of 2500 spears, the pinnacle of the decade-long Kulata Tjuta (Many Spears) project,’ he said.

The Mulka Project – a collective of Yolŋu digital artists from Northeast Arnhem Land – has been commissioned to illuminate the building’s façade in March as part of the 2023 Enlighten Festival. Thanks to the generous support of the Gallery’s Indigenous Arts Partner Wesfarmers Arts, the National Gallery will also display the newly commissioned and acquired untitled ( walam-wunga.galang ), a major installation of nine large grindstone forms by renowned Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist, Jonathan Jones, which has been touring the country and internationally as part of the exhibition Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia .

In December the Gallery will host the world premiere of Body Sculpture , the highly anticipated new animatronic sculpture by international artist Jordan Wolfson.

‘Brave and bold collecting has been at the heart of the National Gallery’s acquisition strategy since our foundation. This major new acquisition builds on this legacy, embracing new and emerging global paradigms outside of traditional collecting areas,’ Mitzevich said.

This is the first solo presentation of Wolfson’s work in Australia and will be shown alongside a selection of earlier works, offering Australian audiences a full expression of Wolfson’s innovative vision.

The Gallery’s Know My Name gender equity initiative continues with two solo exhibitions by leading women artists: Changing From From to From , a presentation of recent works by leading Seoul and Berlin-based artist Haegue Yang, and an exhibition of the American photographer Nan Goldin’s most renowned series, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency .

From July, the Gallery will share more of its collection with regional and suburban galleries as part of the Sharing the National Collection initiative, funded under the Australian Government’s new National Cultural Policy.

‘This support will allow us to share more of the National Collection with more Australians and local communities – making it a truly national collection,’ Mitzevich said.

See below for the full 2023 program.

UPDATE, 7 JUN 2023: The Council of the National Gallery of Australia has decided to formally postpone the Ngura Pulka – Epic Country exhibition. More info here.

Australian music wouldn’t be what it is today without the artistic brilliance of its Indigenous musical artists. 2023 has been a bright year for indigenous artists who draw from their cultural heritage and personal experiences to create captivating melodies and rich lyrics that are driving the music industry in new directions.

Thelma Plum

Award-winning artist Thelma Plum’s music continues to influence Australian music even a year after the release of her EP, Meanjin. Her exploration of her Gamilaraay heritage and personal journey captivates her listeners. Plum brings her fans in close, through her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, often addressing themes of identity, relationships, and Indigenous Australian experiences. In 2023, Thelma Plum continues to tour the world 2023 as fans brace for her to release new music soon.

Ziggy Ramo’s socially conscious lyrics and genre-blending style have taken Australian music by storm. The award-winning artist’s music is a potent blend of hip-hop, R&B, and spoken word, with lyrics that touch on Indigenous rights, mental health, and the societal inequalities that affect Australia’s youth. In January 2023, Ziggy Ramo released his second album, which addresses the dark legacy of Australia’s colonial past. Earlier this year, Ramo told Rolling Stone Australia, “Black Thoughts (2020 album) was explicit and unmissable, whereas Sugar Coated Lies is insidious and hidden; Australian South Sea Islanders are the forgotten people.”

With his energetic performances and infectious music, Baker Boy has become a rising star in Australia’s music landscape. Mixing hip-hop with traditional Yolŋu languages and dances, he brings a unique and captivating energy to his performances. In 2023, Baker Boy’s music continues to celebrate cultural pride and promote positivity, showcasing the vibrant spirit of Indigenous youth.

Emma Donovan

AIR Award-winning Emma Donovan’s soulful voice weaves elements of gospel, blues, and Indigenous storytelling. Her music dives deep into themes of resilience, family, and connection to your roots. In 2023, Donovan released the powerful and emotional single, “Take no More” with Yalanji, Jirrbal, and Badu Islander artist Kee’ahn. Fans are hopeful for a new album to drop soon. 2023 has already shaped up to be one of the artist’s busiest years yet, following a wave of international tours and festival performances like the Storyland Festival and Perth Festival.

Electric Fields

It’s hard not to recognize the multi-award-winning duo Electric Fields as one of Australia’s leading musical acts. The duo blends electronic beats with traditional Indigenous languages, creating what music fans call epic. The result is a sound that is contemporary and powerful and deeply rooted in cultural heritage. Their 2023 single “We the People” was chosen as the official anthem of the World Pride Organization.

Tia Gostelow

This year, the Australian indie-pop sensation Tia Gostelow is about to drop her third album Head Noise. Gostelow’s music has earned the artist adoring fans worldwide for her powerful message of self-discovery, and identity. Drawing from her Wiradjuri heritage, her music explores the challenges faced by Indigenous youth and modern life. After her award-winning debut album “Thick Skin” and popular follow-up “Chrysalis,” fans are eagerly awaiting the artist’s third release. Regarding her upcoming album, Gostelow told NME in April, “I hope in some way this album can bring a little bit of comfort to the Head Noise that might keep you awake in the early hours.”

Beloved Aussie duo Holy Holy are headed out on a pretty dang extensive Australian tour next year, taking in dates all over the country right across April.

They'll be hitting nine shows over the course of the month, kicking off in Kaurna Land/Adelaide on April 5 and wrapping it all up in Wadawurrung Land/Torquay on April 27.

Update 3.4.24 : Unfortunately Gumbaynggir rapper  Tasman Keith  is no longer able to join Holy Holy on the tour, after breaking his leg playing comp rugby league.

The band released a message to fans on Tuesday (April 2), confirming that the "best NRL player in the music biz" is under strict no-travel instructions while he heals.

New supports for the tour - which kicks off on April 5 in Tarndanya/Adelaide - will be announced soon, we'll let you know as soon as they're locked in.

Update 5.4.24 : It's two for the price of one with replacement supports on this tour as Eliza & The Delusionals  and  Sumner  join Holy Holy at select dates on their national whip.

It all kicks off tonight in Adelaide with Eliza & The Delusionals cracking open the stage at Hindley Street Music Hall.

The whole tour's happening to celebrate Holy Holy's fifth studio album, Cellophane , and their gorgeous new era.

"We're looking forward to building a wild and expansive set for this tour, playing some of the brand new works off Cellophane with special guests and digging into the back catalogue to find some gems to get lost in again," Timothy Carroll — one half of the group – said.

"Wear something special, and we'll make a night of it. When music is at its best, it's a holy thing."

Tickets for the tour are on sale from 10am AEDT on Friday 13 October, and you can find out more over on the tour's website.

Check out all the dates and details below.

NME Best Australian Albums of 2023

The 25 best Australian albums of 2023

Pop euphoria, folk revelation and world-building electronic records and so much more

T his year was a rush, wasn’t it?

Twelve months have gone by and it felt like a whirlwind. Our list of the best Australian music reflects the eclecticism of 2023, from the massive pop comebacks to revelatory folk songwriting to boundary-pushing hip-hop artistry.

There’s much more to come – and more that isn’t on this list – but here are NME ’s 25 best Australian albums and EPs of 2023.

Karen Gwee, Regional Editor (APAC)

Words by: Greta Brereton, Mikey Cahill, Tom Disalvo, Sosefina Fuamoli, Jackson Langford, Chris Lewis, Ben Madden, Jared Richards, Angela Skujins, Caleb Triscari, Doug Wallen, Cyclone Wehner and David James Young

Peach PRC, ‘Manic Dream Pixie’

25. Peach PRC, ‘Manic Dream Pixie’

A sugar rush of spacey bubblegum, pristine production, and earworm hooks, Peach PRC ’s ‘Manic Pixie Dream’ is an ecstatic pop confection. Whether she’s revelling in celebrity crushes on ‘Kinda Famous’ or ridding herself of toxicity on the Robyn -indebted ‘F U Goodbye’, the TikTok star-turned-pop princess colours new shades into her candy-coated persona.

  • READ MORE: Peach PRC is the Australian star making pop pretty again

The 2000s influences of glittery Auto-Tune and heavily digitised vocals never outshine Peach’s vulnerability, as she muses on heartbreak and mental health in these brisk tracks that never overstay their welcome. ‘Manic Pixie Dream’ is pure pop high without the comedown. TD

Key track: ‘Kinda Famous’

Like this? Try this: Leah Kate, Chappell Roan

Forest Claudette, ‘Everything Was Green’

24. Forest Claudette, ‘Everything Was Green’

Hailing from The Patch outside Melbourne, Forest Claudette has steadily gained momentum with their abundant synth’n’B. Following their 2022 debut EP ‘The Year Of February’, which was widely compared to Frank Ocean , the resonant vocalist has arrived with ‘Everything Was Green’ – scoring an ARIA Award (Best Soul/R&B Release) for the cruisy lead single, ‘Mess Around’, featuring Atlanta’s EarthGang .

Claudette ponders Black queer identity while navigating their surrounds and life’s flux in intimate lyrics prompted by a transformative trip to California. But, if ‘Mess Around’ and ‘Motor In The Sand’ are respectively decadent and archly self-destructive, then ‘Violence’ is haunting, a lament of police brutality over quiet acoustics. Revelatory. CW

Key track: ‘Mess Around’ (featuring EarthGang)

Like this? Try this: Stevan , KYE

G Flip, ‘Drummer’

23. G Flip, ‘Drummer’

G Flip ’s sophomore album ‘ Drummer ’ is inextricable from the instrument that started it all. While percussion is the muse that energises the entire tracklist – from the subtle snares of ‘7 Days’ to the thunderous solos and shimmering cymbals of ‘Made For You’ – ‘Drummer’ is also a showcase of G Flip’s versatility.

  • READ MORE: G Flip on their new album ‘Drummer’, their six ARIA nominations and becoming the queer non-binary role model they always wanted

Guitar often pulls focus, like with the warm acoustics of ‘Australia’ or ‘Love Hurts’’s country twangs, while G Flip’s vocals are their best yet, flitting between pop punk sneers (‘Worst Person Alive’) to breezy drawl (‘Baked’). Through it all, G Flip bluntly lays bare their reflections on exes, gender roles, and simply being “ done with all your bullshit .” TD

Key track: ‘Rough’

Like this? Try this: Lauren Sanderson, FLETCHER

The Kid LAROI, ‘The First Time’

22. The Kid LAROI, ‘The First Time’

The Kid LAROI became a Gen Z pop-rap phenom by universalising his teen angst. And the themes remain similar on the First Nations prodigy’s ambitious debut, ‘ The First Time ’ – he remains conflicted about romantic commitments and fame.

But LAROI reveals a new sonic, and curatorial, flair, transcending algorithmic emo-trap ( jazz pianist Robert Glasper even guests). Ironically, the vintage soul samples on ‘Sorry’ and ‘Where Do You Sleep?’ belie the recriminatory lyrics.

However, LAROI still delivers massive bangers: ‘Too Much’ with K-pop superstar Jungkook and UK rap frontrunner Central Cee a particularly smooth triumph. Most auspicious? The closer ‘Kids Are Growing Up’, on which the 20-year-old looks to the future. CW

Key track: ‘Love Again’

Like this? Try this: Sahxl, d4vd

Daine, ‘Shapeless’

21. Daine, ‘Shapeless’

“ And the portal’s open ,” Daine purrs on ‘Portal’, the fourth track from their mixtape ‘ Shapeless ’. The emo-pop artist’s sophomore project is amorphous and striking in its composition and otherworldliness. Replete with flashes of hyperpop and hardcore , the eight tracks writhe with maximalist flavours and breakdowns, making it perfect listening for rotting in a dank basement or living large at a house party.

  • READ MORE: Daine: future emo phenom fighting for fiery artistic vision

Incorporating songwriting from some of Australia’s most unique musicians – Sione Teumohenga aka Lonelyspeck and Maurice Santiago aka Hearteyes , to name a few – ‘Shapeless’ establishes Daine as a tastemaker. AS

Key track: ‘Doom’

Like this? Try this: Ninajirachi , 100 Gecs

Skeleten, ‘Under Utopia’

20. Skeleten, ‘Under Utopia’

As one of Sydney’s unsung musical heroes, Russell Fitzgibbon played in various bands over 15 years – from quirky indie-pop to alt-country to glitch-electronica – before launching solo project Skeleten . That history weaves its way into the tapestry of ‘ Under Utopia ’, a far more fully realised debut than your average.

Its shapeshifting grooves are accentuated by pristine production, with lush electronic soundscapes revelling in warmth and texture. It’s Fitzgibbon’s vocals, however, that are the biggest revelation. Rarely a singer in previous projects, his understated lilt provides ‘Utopia’ a key human touch. Before he’s dust and bones, Skeleten deserves his flowers. DJY

Key track: ‘Heart Full of Tenderness’

Like this? Try this: Harvey Sutherland , Toro Y Moi

Babitha, ‘Brighter Side Of Blue’

19. Babitha, ‘Brighter Side Of Blue’

Imogen Grist has discussed the role Dolly Parton ’s ‘Jolene’ played in the genesis of the Babitha project, and the influence of that song – with its folksy flair and narrative weight – is felt all throughout her kaleidoscopic album, ‘Brighter Side Of Blue’. Like Parton, Babitha weaves intricate tales of optimism with the leisurely cadence of an afternoon stroll through rural suburbia.

  • READ MORE: Babitha: rising alt-country artist looking to the ‘Brighter Side Of Blue’

Babitha stretches folk’s boundaries with classic Americana and ’70s pop rock flourishes, punctuating tracks with a lush mix of spaghetti-western riffs, heady melodies and irresistible vocal twangs. “ Everyone was singing ,” Babitha croons, almost prophetically, on the title track “ my ears, they are still ringing .” With a debut as stellar as this, ours are too – in a good way. TD

Key track: ‘In My Own Time’

Like this? Try this: Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys

Cable Ties, ‘All Her Plans’

18. Cable Ties, ‘All Her Plans’

Sidelined by the pandemic just as they were releasing 2020’s ‘Far Enough’, Cable Ties make up for lost time on this layered third album. The Melbourne trio’s churning punk still arrives frontloaded with singer/guitarist Jenny McKechnie’s defiant roar, but this time her lyrics detail the failures of Australia’s healthcare system, especially regarding mental health.

  • READ MORE: Cable Ties – ‘All Her Plans’ review: amid the righteous anger, a new kind of intimacy

Meanwhile, ‘Time For You’ directs the band’s focused fervour into an anthem of personal devotion and ‘Mum’s Caravan’ is a striking autobiography flecked with acoustic guitar and piano from guest Michael Beach . McKechnie’s singing is more delicate than ever on the latter, finding a new way to cut to the bone. DW

Key track: ‘Time For You’

Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, ‘So This Is Love’

17. Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, ‘So This Is Love’

It’s a hard pill to swallow, but heartbreak suits Cash Savage ’s music. She’s been through a rough divorce, six lockdowns and a crisis of confidence in whether her other big love (The Last Drinks) would continue.

  • READ MORE: Cash Savage and the Last Drinks – ‘So This Is Love’ review: potent and tumultuous

Lucky for us, she stayed the course and recorded a nine-song album about this exceptionally difficult period. Savage’s distinct mix of brooding twang, barely disguised vitriol and pounding rock’n’roll are on full display here. “ My mama told me crying doesn’t suit my face ,” she snarls on ‘Push’, then throws it back at her: “ what about this neediness mama ?” Catharsis hits different when Savage is behind the mic. JK-47, ‘Revision for Regrowth’

16. JK-47, ‘Revision For Regrowth’

On his second album ‘Revision For Regrowth’, JK-47 is older, wiser, and ready to reach the next generation. Rapping with a sense of confidence and clarity that only comes from true introspection, the Tweed Heads MC lays out his mission statement on tracks like swirling opener ‘Introspect’ and the purposeful ‘Victory Speech’: “ I take my time when I speak, really tryna teach truth to these kids ”.

Teaming up with producer Jay Orient for the entirety of the album, JK-47 touches on the importance of family and faith, while also acknowledging that in order to grow, we must first accept our mistakes. His 2020 debut album, ‘Made For This’, showed that he could be one of the most important voices in Australian hip-hop. ‘Revision For Regrowth’ proves it. BM

a.s.o., ‘a.s.o.’

15. a.s.o., ‘a.s.o.’

The ’90s revival continues with this deeply satisfying nod to the trip hop era (think Massive Attack , Sneaker Pimps and so much ‘erb). a.s.o consists of respected Australian DJ/producer Tornado Wallace and the singer-songwriter and DJ Alias Error.

Wallace showed his downtempo range with Sui Zhen a few years back, and now he’s gone full widescreen cinema, soundtracking mellow kick-ons rather than delivering his usual four to the floor fare. The bruised vocals excel at capturing young, tumultuous affairs, the inevitable broken hearts and the questions that follow. The a.s.o. project feels evergreen, at home, on café playlists as well as in dingy after-hours Berlin clubs. MC

Kylie Minogue, ‘Tension’

14. Kylie Minogue, ‘Tension’

How does she do it? Over more than three decades, Kylie Minogue has reinvented herself time and time again. On ‘ Tension ’, she’s embraced the tried-and-true formula of classic EDM beats, piano house backings and unforgettable pop hooks. Her messages of love and desire are crystal clear, universally felt and destined to be played on a dancefloor.

‘Tension’ was something of a renaissance for Kylie, with ‘Padam Padam’’s prolific rise becoming the track that launched a thousand TikToks. That one word lured in a new generation of fans, and who can blame them? With Kylie, you hear it and you know. CT

Teether & Kuya Neil, ‘Stressor’

13. Teether & Kuya Neil, ‘Stressor’

Following on from debut mixtape ‘Glyph’, future-rap duo Teether and Kuya Neil turned more heads with this year’s dynamic and hard-hitting record, ‘Stressor’. Together, these producers and songwriters represent the exciting nature of Melbourne’s underground hip hop and electronic scenes; their chemistry is undeniable, their influences diverse, as they lean into furious rap and production that feels punk.

‘Stressor’ shifts between pace and vibe relentlessly, not giving the listener much space for their attention to wander. It is commanding and musically, fiercely intelligent. The record brims with a frustrated, chaotic energy. Undeniably charismatic. SF

Polaris, ‘Fatalism’

12. Polaris, ‘Fatalism’

The triumph of Polaris ’ third studio album, heartbreakingly, cannot be discussed without acknowledging the tragedy of the late, great Ryan Siew – who passed away just weeks out from its release. This context adds further weight to an already-heavy LP of the band’s hardest-hitting material yet.

With churning guitars and walloping drums, Polaris can build up empires just as quickly as they can tear them down. At a time when most heritage heavy Australian bands are resting on their laurels, they continue to evolve with distinct, determined defiance. Death shall have no dominion. DJY

Collarbones, ‘Filth’

11. Collarbones, ‘Filth’

Formed across state lines after Marcus Whale and Travis Cook met on the now-quaint space of 2000s post-rock message boards, Collarbones have genre-hopped over the past decade but always traded in ideas of queer longing and distance.

‘Filth’, their fifth and final album , dives deepest via a coalescing of their many sounds: glitchy, skittering electronica, nu-metal -tinged intensity, and transcendent post-rock ballads. Whale sings of absolution through not love but consumption, of swallowing and being swallowed whole. Sensual, explicit (see the lyrics of ‘Lack’) and playfully dramatic, ‘Filth’ is a bittersweet swansong. JR

Cub Sport, ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’

10. Cub Sport, ‘Jesus At The Gay Bar’

Beautifully riding the wave of a changing Australian pop landscape, Cub Sport have never felt more authentically themselves or empowered than on their fifth studio record, ‘ Jesus At The Gay Bar ’.

The record brings together threads of euphoria, melancholy and wistful yearning with a comfort in self that Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson’s songwriting has relished in recent years. Singles like ‘Always Got The Love’ and ‘Keep Me Safe’ exhibit nuanced songwriting and intimate arrangements. A celebration of love and identity, this record is a clever collection of music that is forward-looking yet unafraid to reflect.

Club-ready music begging to be danced to, this album confirms Cub Sport as one of Australia’s best pop outfits. SF

Key track: ‘Always Got The Love’

Body Type, ‘Expired Candy’

9. Body Type, ‘Expired Candy’

Vocal harmonies straight out of the ’60s? Check. Angular guitar riffs that Nick Zinner would be jealous of? Check. Some of the sharpest songwriting in Australia right now? Yep. It’s ‘ Expired Candy ’ by Body Type , an album that straddles the line between post-punk and pop while exorcising a few demons along the way.

The Sydney quartet sound as confident and raw as they were on their 2022 debut, but this time everything feels looser, even downright fun – from the smouldering singalong ‘Summer Forever’ to the caustic takedown of ‘Creation of Man’. And when guitarist Sophie McComish exclaims on the ode to pandemic loneliness “ Miss the world but mostly I miss B-O-D-Y-T-Y-P-E ” – it’s enough to make you want to start a band of your own. CL

Key track: ‘Weekend’

Like this? Try this: Scott & Charlene’s Wedding , The Coathangers

Tkay Maidza, ‘Sweet Justice’

8. Tkay Maidza, ‘Sweet Justice’

Tkay Maidza ’s ‘Sweet Justice’ is the soundtrack – or slaytrack – to her own superhero movie. The exuberant rapper/singer released a pop-coded debut album, ‘Tkay’, back in 2016, but later expressed dismay about industry pressure. Unimpeded, Maidza then explored her multifaceted artistry on the celebrated ‘Last Year Was Weird’ EP trilogy.

‘ Sweet Justice ’ represents the culmination of an idiosyncratic character arc as an empowered Maidza finally frees herself of foes, heartbreakers and past setbacks. (Hear the drill&B track, ‘Won One’, a takedown of misogynists.)

Now Los Angeles-based, Maidza proves her new stature, connecting with high-calibre producers like Flume (the explosive single ‘Silent Assassin’ ) and Kaytranada . And, again, she advances her stylistic aspirations – as on the dreamy R&B of ‘Love Again’. This record, indeed, does justice to Maidza’s talent. CW

Maple Glider, ‘I Get Into Trouble’

7. Maple Glider, ‘I Get Into Trouble’

Subtlety is often in short supply on a Maple Glider record. Tori Zietsch has made this clear on ‘I Get Into Trouble’, her second LP in just over two years and a graceful evolution from her debut.

While several of the first album’s themes appear on the second – sexism, agency, personal relationships with religion and family – ‘I Get Into Trouble’ is more textured, without sacrificing any cohesiveness. Take ‘Dinah’ with its playful, folk-pop quality, and an equally as cheeky music video, that sucker-punches you with its stark lyrics about the church and sexual assault.

Elsewhere, ‘Scream’ and ‘Surprises’ recall the lightly strummed guitar and dreamy vocals that Zietsch excels in. Her development as an artist is abundantly clear on this record, which is equal parts serenading and serious. CT

Floodlights, ‘Painting Of My Time’

6. Floodlights, ‘Painting Of My Time’

The melodrama of The Bad Seeds , the melodies of The Smiths , the expansive sonic canvases of The Church : Floodlights are a guitar band from a time when that label wasn’t a pejorative.

Lead singer Louis Parsons sings with urgency and the conviction of a man whose entire world hangs on the note that’s being played. All the better to convey the seriousness of this record’s subject matter: ‘ Painting Of My Time ’ offers poetic reflections on life, death and what it all means. It’s an album that demands your attention and pays dividends for it. CL

Jen Cloher, ‘I Am The River, The River Is Me’

5. Jen Cloher, ‘I Am The River, The River Is Me’

“ Being human is listening ,” sings Jen Cloher on their fifth album. Self-realisation and continuous learning are central themes of this persistently powerful album, on which the Melbourne artist connects with their Māori heritage and queer identity in a multiplicity of ways. But Cloher doesn’t stop there, calling out our imperilled planet on the title track and stolen land on ‘Being Human’ and even questioning the nature of truth itself on ‘Protest Song’.

  • READ MORE: Jen Cloher: “My heart is opening up to my culture. With that comes grief and unpacking trauma, joy and connection”

After the startling intimacy of their 2017 self-titled album, here Cloher strikes out to penetrating new places with an unmatched boldness of spirit. Among some of the more sombre themes here, ‘My Witch’ swaps out indie rock and folk methodology for simmering electronics and knowingly lusty R&B. DW

RVG, ‘Brain Worms’

4. RVG, ‘Brain Worms’

RVG have been responsible for some of the most tender, heart-wrenching moments in Australian rock over the last half-decade. There’s plenty more on the Australian Music Prize-winning ‘Brain Worms’, from washed-out opener ‘Common Ground’ to the stark slow-burn of ‘You’re The Reason’. But perhaps the album’s defining trait is its pitch-black, wry humour. “ I’m too old for this shit ,” Romy Vager yelps on the title track against a clatter of drums. “ I used to be a journalist! ”

  • READ MORE: Romy Vager faces our modern hellscape on RVG’s ‘Brain Worms’

Elsewhere, on the tragic ‘Tambourine’, she sneaks in digs at both Train and Google Chrome into gut-punch pandemic-era balladry. They say if you don’t laugh you’ll cry, but ‘Brain Worms’ makes time and space for both – and is honestly all the better for it. DJY

Angie McMahon, ‘Light, Dark, Light Again’

3. Angie McMahon, ‘Light, Dark, Light Again’

On her second album, Angie McMahon captures all the confusing, heavy, and hopeful parts of the twenty-something experience and spins them into lyrical gold.

She explores the collision of her internal self and the external world poignantly – pondering her place in the vastness of it all, as a complex human in a humming universe. The stories she tells on ‘Light, Dark, Light Again’ are her own, but they’re relatable ones, from spending days in a depression hole to drunken exchanges with a lover.

This album is a warm embrace – a salve for anxiety, a soothing balm for when the world feels too big. It’s a reminder to breathe, to come home to yourself, to push on through the darkness. Because after the dark, comes the light again. GB

Genesis Owusu, ‘Struggler’

2. Genesis Owusu, ‘Struggler’

Genesis Owusu ’s first album ‘Smiling With No Teeth’ was a monumental point in Australian hip-hop and music in general. Brash and ambitious, it marked the introduction of a star. ‘Struggler’ cements that this supernova isn’t burning out anytime soon.

  • READ MORE: Genesis Owusu: the show-stealing hero banging the drum for musical outsiders

Refined and focused, Owusu’s second album is firm in its conviction that to struggle doesn’t mean to crumble, but to persist. ‘Struggler’ is a multi-terrain expedition through the psyche, from the frantic strums and claustrophobic gasps of ‘Leaving The Light’, to the all-consuming, ominous warps of ‘The Old Man’, and woozy, genre-hopping acceptance of ‘What Comes Will Come’.

The vision Genesis Owusu paints is clear – this is a story of a roach on the run, and there’s no time to slow down. JL

Troye Sivan, ‘Something To Give Each Other’

1. Troye Sivan, ‘Something To Give Each Other’

Troye Sivan ’s third album pulls through on the glimpses of greatness of 2018’s ‘Bloom’, where the pop star embraced not merely his queer identity but the sensuality of it.

But where that album traded in sly innuendo, ‘Something to Give Each Other’ is assured, bold and direct, speaking to a transformation that comes when a queer person liberates themselves into unbridled fun without the hangover of shame.

  • READ MORE: Troye Sivan has entered his party boi era

Lead single ‘Rush’, a house throb of pure hedonism, sets the mood: Sivan against a sweaty four-to-the-floor, the thrill of making eyes (and making out) on a dancefloor propelling the track forward.

The ecstasy of endless parties, flings and a sheer enjoyment at being alive pulse through ‘Something’, whether with the shimmering ‘Got Me Started’ or mid-tempo moments, like the sultry ‘In Your Room’ or the sweet ‘What’s The Time Where You Are?’. And at just 33 minutes, Sivan sneaks out of the bedroom before the bliss bursts. JR
