Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
Long Island
This is where president Theodore Roosevelt and his wife raised six children. A nature trail from behind the museum ends at a picturesque beach. The 23-room Victorian home was rehabilitated in 2015; it's accessible by guided 45-minute tour, but can get very crowded in summer. It's recommended to reserve online or by phone starting at 9am; by noon tickets are often sold out well into October (www.recreation.gov or 877-444-6777).

Teddy Roosevelt was one of the most interesting and consequential presidents in American History. From starting the Food and Drug Administration to building the Panama Canal he was into everything. The house, amazingly, is unchanged from when he lived there. It's provides a glimpse into what was modern over a hundred years ago. The grounds and neighboring town are beautiful too. I spent most of the day at Sagamore Hill walking the property and visiting the home and library. It was a great experience.
Wait... How haven't I reviewed one of my favorite places, not only in all of LI, but in the entire world. We make it a point to come here at least once a year and even more so now with the baby. Teddy Roosevelt's summer home is that piece of history you had no idea was in your backyard. Pro tip: plan in advance and book a tour of the house online. You can no longer drop in on tours. Pro tip 2: Try not to tour the house in the summer if your health is affected by the heat. It gets VERY HOT. A tour of the house is so fun and we never get sick of taking one. That usually is after we've done the nature trail to the beach/water. It's stunning and a great reminder of the beautiful Island we have at our disposal. It's also a super dog friendly spot. The only thing you need to pay for is the tour of the President's house. The museum, nature trail and even the grounds are free to walk. Any of the staff that works here is extremely knowledgeable and is happy to discuss the property or anything about Teddy's life. Looking for a fun day trip? Make this one of the spots you check out. You won't be disappointed!

Home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. Not too bad for a New York City kid. Free parking and offers a nature trail for you to enjoy the grounds. There is an audio app you can download to hear the history of the former president. There are tours of the Roosevelt home given on Thursday-Sunday, but you need to book them in advance and pay for the tour. The Old Orchard Museum is open Thursday-Sunday from 11:00am-4:00pm and is free to the public and gives a great history into his life growing up and they have cool artifacts on display. The history is rich and fascinating and is worth the trip. The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

I visited Sagamore Hill many years ago when I was in elementary school, but have recently returned since it was one of the places where I could use my National Park Pass for a free tour. Reservations for the tour had to be made in advance on the recreation.com website. Tickets for the 10am and 1pm tours were released at the beginning of the month and those for the 2pm and 3pm tours were released the day before. A $1 reservation fee applied per ticket. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about both Theodore Roosevelt (TR) and the house. He offered many interesting stories and facts about both. Many animals that TR hunted were throughout the house. Predators were displayed with their mouths open showing off their sharp teeth. Herbivores were displayed with their mouths closed. It was easy to appreciate the house itself and imagine TR and family using it as the tour guide talked about each room. One thing to look for is a portrait of TR yelling at stern faced Joe Cannon, the speaker of the house when TR was president. There is an actual cannon that TR named "Joe Cannon" inspired by the person. It was on view in the museum which was free to visit. We had time to look at one of the exhibits that did a good job of looking at TR's life including family, politics and his time in the rough riders. Will have to return one day to view the other exhibits and maybe explore the nature trails on the property.

Really cool NPS site. Grounds are well maintained. Museum has some interesting items and the content is very informative. Good junior ranger program. This is a joint worth checking out.
This was a fantastic tour! First of all, I want to shout out to our ranger guide, Scott Gurney, who has been here for 28 years! He was so funny, intelligent, and witty. He told us so many things about Teddy Roosevelt I had never heard. Not dry history stuff, but really niche, lesser known stuff that was super interesting! NPS, he really is an ambassador for your program! This home is beautiful. I love how warm, personal, and eclectic it is. This home was built by Teddy, and only he and his wife lived in it. After his wife died, the home was quickly transitioned to a museum, and then a national historic site, so the artifacts are real. They belonged to Roosevelt and the family. Even his hat and sword from the Spanish American war is on display, as he had it on display when he was alive! The tour is 10 dollars and is advertised as half an hour--currently 15 minutes inside and 15 minutes outside, limited to six people and downstairs only. But Scott spent almost two hours with us! So much to tell, and it never got boring. As the COVID situation evolves, they are reevaluating access to the second floor. The Roosevelt museum is currently closed. Oh, and make sure you plan for traffic. It will likely take you a lot longer than you think to get here from the city or other nearby destinations. Don't want to miss this tour! The grounds here are beautiful too. There is an apple orchard and a 0.7 mile loop to hike. It's steep, particularly on the right side, but it's a gorgeous and beautiful beachy shoreline and sparkling blue water when you reach the end. I can't recommend this enough. And again, props to Scott!

I wanted to explore near Huntington/Cold Spring Harbor area. I came upon this historical site. And I'm glad that I did! Leisurely walking around, I spent about 1-2hrs here and it makes for a very relaxing day. 1) Most of everything is free as of now, which you can't complain about! - Free entry/access to grounds (*currently: Old Orchard Museum is closed) - Free parking lot - Free public restrooms within hours 9am-5pm Probably the only thing you can pay for is the private tours of the house, etc. 2) It's quite well maintained - There are trails which are well marked and very clean. - There are educational posts along the whole site (something to read along the walk if you wanted to learn about the history) - Have rangers around with scheduled walking tours if needed Everything was very cool/interesting to see. But by far my favorite part has to be the eel creek. When you walk out onto the bridge to the beach, it's truly a beautiful view. It almost transports you to somewhere that doesn't seem long island, but more like upstate NY. It's very peaceful by the water. You see all kinds of marine life in the water and birds in the sky. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here at this historical site and would definitely recommend a visit.

Visit Date: December 10, 2022 I came here with my dad and my son for a tour of Sagamore Hill. I lost a husband by filing for divorce, dated a few losers after the fact, now I'm single again and I gained my dad and a grandpa to go out with my son and I on my Saturdays that I have him and am off work. Sagamore Hill is great, I love it but I have to give 4 stars for tour service. You need to book a tour online that was easy for me but the morning of the tour I was running late for the 10 AM tour we were scheduled for. I tried calling to say I would be late and the phone service to try to let them know of any type of event like running late or having an emergency is awful no one answers. Luckily when we got there we were able to take the 11 AM tour instead of the 10 AM one but when we tried to knock on the main house door we got no one answering. My dad had to go back to a previous entrance we tried and talk to the guy who turned us away and told us to wait at the main door only to find out we should wait and see if we could be put on the 11 AM tour. So even though this is a really beautiful historic site and so great the service and finding out things and reaching someone by telephone warrants the 4 stars instead of 5. I made it halfway through the tour before my son decided to misbehave a little bit. He wasn't terrible but when we had to go upstairs he just wouldn't go. So I left the tour but my dad stayed to finish it because he loves history and I wanted him to be able to finish the tour even if it meant my son and I went back to the car to wait for him. The house is so beautiful so taking the tour is worth it if you can book it ahead of time. I've also hiked the trail here and want to hike it again. The trail was beautiful as well and when I got to the beach part of the trail I marveled in the fact that I was on the same beach Teddy Roosevelt and his family were on so many years ago. This is a great place for nature hiking and history and besides the iffy service I would recommend visiting.
I went here to explore Sagamore Hill as well as Oyster Bay via mass transit and walking since I've never been in the area before. It's a three mile walk from the train station to the site. I stopped by Teddy's grave since I was passing by anyway. I'm sure it's a trek that Teddy would had respected. I experienced the nature trail with the beach, windmill, the museum and the dead animals in the home during a guided tour. It's not going to be like Broadway's "Hamilton" with "The room where it happened" vibes but it's still a fun adventure.

How to Visit the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, New York
Living in NYC is great, but every now and then I need a break from the city.
I love road trips. My husband and I used to take road trips all the time, but now that we live in New York and don’t have a car, it’s been much harder for us to make road trips.
We finally decided that not having a car wasn’t a great excuse. We live in NYC after all and it is one of the most connected cities in the world. There are trains, buses, and ferries that can help us get out of the city.
A few weeks ago we took a lovely day trip on Metro-North to Beacon, New York . That was a wonderful trip, so we decided to investigate another train option: the Long Island Rail Road . After some research, we decided to take a day trip in the LIRR to Oyster Bay.
Why Oyster Bay? This looked like a sleepy town with some cute restaurants and coastal views. Those two things already got me excited. But the main reason we chose Oyster Bay was to visit the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site .
If you guys didn’t already know this, I’m fascinated by history. I always seek out historical sights on my travels and I really want to check out more of these sites around where I live, too. So Sagamore Hill was the perfect choice for our day trip!
Honestly, I loved the trip to Oyster Bay. It was an easy escape from the city. If you are also looking for a nice break from NYC or want to add a unique historic site to your trip, keep reading. In this post, I will tell you everything you need to know to Plan Your Visit to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Plus, I will include some of the best things to do in Oyster Bay to make this a full day trip!
Ready to go? Next stop: Oyster Bay!
Everything You Need to Know to Plan Your Visit to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was born in New York City in 1858. You can actually visit his childhood home in Manhattan , which I also highly recommend. During his childhood, he frequently visited Long Island with his family. In 1880, Theodore Roosevelt purchased 155 acres of land in Oyster Bay. He had a Queen Anne-style house built on the property. From 1885-1919, this house (Sagamore Hill) served as Theodore Roosevelt’s primary home.
During Roosevelt’s presidency, Sagamore Hill became known as “The Summer White House.” Roosevelt took meetings and hosted foreign dignitaries at the home during the 7 summers of his presidency.
The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1962, the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site was established so it could be protected under the National Parks Service.
The Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is located in Oyster Bay, New York on Long Island:
20 Sagamore Hill Road Oyster Bay, NY 1177
How to Get Here
Sagamore Hill is located about 40 miles outside of Midtown Manhattan. If you are traveling here without a car, the best way to get here is with the Long Island Rail Road. I took the LIRR from the Jamacia Station in Queens. You can check out the timetable for the LIRR route here . You can purchase tickets for the LIRR at the Jamacia station (your Metro card doesn’t work for LIRR) or on the MTX eTix app . I used the app and it was so easy. Just buy your ticket on the app and activate it right before you board the train. Make sure you confirm if you are traveling during peak or off-peak hours, as there are different tickets for these options. You will take the LIRR to the Oyster Bay station. The main heart of Oyster Bay is about a 7-minute walk from the train station.
To get to the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, you will need to take an Uber. At least when I visited, Ubers were not very frequent. I took an Uber to and from the historic site and had to wait over 15 minutes each time for my driver to arrive.
Another option for getting to Oyster Bay is with a Long Island Getaway . You will still need to take the LIRR to Oyster Bay but with this package you OysterRides minivan transportation to and from many of the sites in Oyster Bay, including Sagamore Hill. Basically, you wouldn’t have to worry about Uber with this option. This getaway package is only available on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer (Memorial Day-Labor Day). These tickets cost $24.25 for adults and $10 for kids. You can buy these tickets at Gray, Green or Blue Ticket Machines at the station. Select “Deals & Getaways”, then “Long Island Getaways” and then “Oyster Bay Village” on the kiosk screen.
It costs $10 to tour Theodore Roosevelt’s home. Children 15 years and younger can visit the house for free. The Old Orchard Museum and grounds are free to enter.
The LIRR round trip fare between Jamacia and Oyster Bay is $14.50 during off-peak travel and $20.00 during peak travel.
The buildings are open Wednesday- Sunday. Park grounds are open every day from sunrise to sunset.
The Old Orchard Museum & Visitor Center is open Wednesday-Sunday from 9:00 am- 5:00 pm. This is where you need to check-in and purchase tickets for the house tour.
The only way to visit the Theodore Roosevelt home is with a guided tour. These are offered from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm Wednesday-Sunday.
What to Expect
When you arrive at Sagamore Hill, you will see the large Queen Anne-style home. To get tickets to tour the home, you will need to walk on the trail (from the parking lot) to the Old Orchard Museum & Visitor Center. Tickets are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Tickets do sell out daily so arrive early to secure your spot.
*If you are traveling from NYC and are taking the LIRR, make sure you plan your trip to arrive as early as possible. I took the 8:50 am LIRR train from Jamaica (which was the first-morning train). I got to Oyster Bay around 9:50 am and had time to get a coffee before heading to Sagamore Hill to get my tickets. Once I arrived, the first available tour was 11:30 am. The LIRR runs about every 2 hours from Jamaica on the weekends so just keep that in mind when you are planning*
Once you get tickets, you will join a group of about 20 people for a guided tour of the house. You can’t take pictures inside but you will get to see 3 floors of the house. My tour lasted an hour and was very informative.
After the tour, you can explore the grounds, visit the museum in the Old Orchard House, or walk on the nature trail. You can bring a picnic but you won’t find any restaurants or cafes on the site.
Good to Know
- Backpacks are not allowed in the house. There is a place to store these in the visitor center.
- Photography isn’t allowed in the home.
- Tours sell out daily, so make sure you arrive early to get tickets.
What to Do at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
The three mains things to explore at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site are the Theodore Roosevelt House, the Theodore Roosevelt Museum in the Old Orchard House, and the Nature Trail.
- Tour Sagamore Hill – This is the main reason why most people visit the historic site. Sagamore Hill was Theodore Roosevelt’s home and the “Summer White House” during his presidency. Tickets for the tours are offered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Tours last about an hour and give you plenty of time to see TR’s home! Arrive early to get tour ticket.
- Nature Trail – Teddy Roosevelt was known for his conservation efforts and love of the outdoors. So, it’s no surprise that you can enjoy a beautiful nature trail during your visit to his house. This 0.7-mile loops trail starts and ends at the Old Orchard House. About halfway through the trail, you can walk out on a boardwalk and enjoy views of Cold Spring Harbor. Bring a picnic and/or a swimsuit if you want!
- Old Orchard Museum – The Old Orchard Home was built in 1938 by Teddy Roosevelt Jr. He lived here with his family until 1960. This home is now part of the historic site. It serves as a visitor’s center (where you can purchase tickets for the Sagamore Hill tour) and as a Teddy Roosevelt Museum. It is free to visit the Old Orchard Museum so spend some time learning more about Teddy Roosevelt before visiting his home.
