2023 Tour de France: Landa set to lead Bahrain Victorious on home soil

Team will ride Tour de France ‘in memory of Gino Mäder’

Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious)

Bahrain Victorious have confirmed their lineup for the 2023 Tour de France , with Mikel Landa set to lead the team on home soil when the race departs from Bilbao on July 1.

Memories of the painfully-recent loss of Gino Mäder remain very strong within the peloton and even more so in his team, with the squad stating in their Tour de France press release Sunday. “We want to ride in his memory and dedicate it to him. Today and every day we ride for you, Gino.”

Twice fourth in the Tour de France and third in the Giro d’Italia last year , Landa makes his first Tour participation in three years. He is expected to battle for GC, with teammate and fellow Basque Pello Bilbao also a protected rider for the overall.

Jack Haig, riding his second Grand Tour of the year after his recent completion of the Giro d’Italia, and former Angliru winner Wout Poels will have a climbing support role for Landa and Bilbao, while not forgetting their own chances in the mountains, as well.

Fred Wright will look to follow up his breakthrough National Championships win with a return to the race where last year he had several near-misses. Both he and Matej Mohorič, a double stage winner in 2021, will once again be looking for breakaway opportunities.

Last but not least, Phil Bauhaus and fellow sprinter and good friend Nikias Arndt, who will act as his leadout, will be looking to make the most of the 2023 Tour’s eight flat stages. “The start in the Basque Country is going to be really exciting, I can already feel the fans passion and excitement,” Landa said in the press release. “I think it’s going to be a big celebration of cycling, so I’m really happy to be a part of that.”

Never a fan of time trialling, in a Tour route with minimal kilometres against the clock, at 33 Landa has one of the best opportunities of the latter part of his career.

“I’d love to finish close to the podium in the GC and also look to win a stage, which is also a dream,” Landa said.

“This year the team and all of us have been impacted by the loss of our friend and teammate, Gino. We need to look at this for extra motivation and to be at our best every day and try and race for him and honour him."

Mikel Landa Leads Bahrain Victorious Lineup to Tour de France

June 25, 2023

Mikel Landa leads the Bahrain Victorious lineup with the 110th edition of the race departing on home roads for the Basque rider. Departing from Bilbao, this year’s edition will have riders take on 3,404 km and over 55,000 vertical meters of climbing across the 21 stages, which only includes a hilly 22km time trial on stage 16.

With only the one time trial, this year’s Tour de France takes the peloton from across the mountains, starting in the Basque Country and the Pyrenees, across to the Alps, Jura and Vosges. With few coastal roads and no cobblestones or dirt roads, it seems a more suited course for the pure climbers.

The 21 stages have been categorised into eight flat stages for the sprinters, which Phil Bauhaus will contest with the support of Nikias Arndt, four hilly stages suited to breakaways, where Fred Wright and Matej Mohoric will look for their opportunities and eight mountain stages where Jack Haig and Wout Poels will support Landa. Pello Bilbao will also keep his eye on the GC and riding home roads for the Grand Depart; he will be highly motivated to aim for another place in the top ten as he did back in 2021.

In contrast to the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France only has two stages over 200km long. However, there will be shorter intense days where the peloton will take on highly challenging mountainous stages. A big day marked for the GC battle is Stage 17 and this year’s Queen Stage. It has over 5,300 vertical meters across the 166km stage. The peloton will face two Cat-1 climbs before taking on the gruelling Hors Categorie climb, Col de Loze, which is 28.3km long and averages 6%.

With a single time trial, a grand depart in his home country and plenty of climbing, Mikel Landa is looking forward to this edition of the Tour de France: “The depart in the Basque Country is going to be really exciting! I’ve already been feeling the passion and excitement of the fans. They are supporting me already. I think it’s going to be a big celebration of cycling, so I’m really happy to be a part of that.

The key stages start in the Basque country with two hard opening stages, and it will be crucial to be ready, as there could be some gaps already at the finish line.

Looking at my ambitions, I’d love to finish close to the podium in the GC and also look to win a stage, which is also a dream.

This year the team and all of us have been impacted by the loss of our friend and teammate, Gino. We need to look at this for extra motivation and to be at our best every day and try and race for him and honour him.”

Lead Sports director Gorazd Štangelj believes the strong team gives Bahrain Victorious good options across the stages: ” We are coming into this Tour de France with big ambitions, and I believe we have an excellent team to have opportunities across all the stages. We’ve got two highly motivated Basque riders who have the opportunity of racing at a Grand Depart on home roads and a route that suits their style of racing. Landa will be our leader, and Pello will co-lead. We then have Matej and Fred, who can look for their opportunities through breakaways, while Phil will have his chances as there are many stages for the sprinters on paper at this year’s Tour, and he will have a highly experienced lead-out man in Nikias. We then are lucky to have fantastic support in the high mountains with Jack and Wout, and both have the ability to fight for a stage win. Overall, we have a strong lineup, and every rider can take advantage of an opportunity across the stages.”

This year we have had a challenging lead-up with the tragic loss of our dear friend Gino. We want to ride in his memory and dedicate it to him.”

Today and every day, we ride for you, Gino.

'These are my roads, my fans' - Mikel Landa eyes a special Tour de France start

With this year's Tour de France starting in the Basque Country, Mikel Landa speaks to Rouleur about what this means to him

Words: James Startt

Year in and year out,  Tour de France  director Christian Prudhomme comes on Radio Tour in the opening kilometres of each day to give a general presentation of the stage. And when he does so, he always announces “ le regional de l’étape ” – the rider who hails from the region the race is currently crossing. But on stage one of this edition of the Tour de France, the regional riders will be the unlikely band of Basque cyclists like Mikel Landa, Pello Bilbao, Omar Fraile, Jonathan Castroviejo, Alex Aranburu, as well as Ion and Gorka Izagirre.

“I can’t wait,” Landa told  Rouleur  while racing in the Critérium du Dauphiné earlier this month. “This is really going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. It is going to be a Tour start like no other for me!”

It is safe to say that all eyes will be on the 33-year-old when the Tour starts in Bilbao, as the 14-year professional grew up just outside the historic port city. He also carries the Basque Country's best chances in the overall standings of the Tour having finished in the top 10 on four occasions and twice finished as high as fourth.

When Prudhomme announced the 2023 route back in October of last year, he made it clear that the Tour was celebrating no single rider but rather the connections between this autonomous region of Spain and the Tour de France.

“Cycling just has such a strong tradition in the Basque Country,” Landa explained. “We have always had very, very good riders for many years, and we have had some strong teams. That really made the fans crazy for cycling. The fans know a lot about cycling. They follow the sport all year, so they know all the riders and they support them all, from the first to the last. And then, of course, we like to party. We like food and wine, and it all comes together perfectly for us at a bike race.”

He adds that the roads and weather conditions in the Basque Country are ideal for cyclists. But when reminded that it often rains in this northern corner of Spain and is packed with hills, he simply laughs, adding: “The conditions are great to become a very tough cyclist!”

Landa, who currently rides for Bahrain-Victorious, first turned professional with the Euskaltel-Euskadi team back in 2010, and even today offers advice to the development squad, something he will likely do more of when he eventually retires.

But at the moment, he clearly has his eyes set on this year’s Tour de France with its Grand Départ in his back garden. On paper, the punchy opening stages in the Basque Country do not play to his strengths as a pure climber. Nevertheless, Landa couldn’t be more excited.

Stage two will be like a mini Clásica San Sebastián as it goes over the famed Jaizkibel climb, central to the historic one-day race. But Landa insists: “It is going to be very different from the Clásica because this is the Tour. I think the big favourites will be watching each other. I think the racing is going to be more controlled.”

While Landa’s own goals are further down the road, as he dreams of finally stepping onto the podium in Paris, the Tour start this year will nevertheless be unforgettable for him. “These are my roads, my fans. Personally, I won’t be nervous, no. I’m just really going to try to enjoy those first few days.”

While Landa can’t wait for the Tour to start, he will also be thinking of his late teammate Gino Mäder, who tragically died just over a week ago in the Tour de Suisse.

“Our team was really touched by the loss of our friend and teammate Gino,” Landa said in a press release from the team this week. “We need to ride for him and honour him. We should give the best we have to give day in and day out.”

Mikel Landa sets sights on 2023 Tour de France podium

After two near-misses, landa will see 'home road' advantage at the 2023 'grand départ' in a new quest for the tour de france podium..

Can Mikel Landa strike Tour de France magic in 2023 with the 108th edition starting on home roads in Spain’s Basque Country?

The Bahrain Victorious captain is putting the Tour at the center of his ambitions next season.

Speaking to the Noticias de Gupizkoa , a team source told the Basque newspaper Landa is all-in on the Tour.

“He knows what it takes to race the Tour, and even more so when it starts at home,” a team official said. “He doesn’t want to miss that chance for anything in the world. That only happens once in a lifetime.

“We know that in the Tour that [Tadej] Pogačar and [Jonas] Vingegaard, as they’ve already demonstrated, are above everyone else, but behind them, there is a group of riders who can fight for the podium, and that’s where Mikel wants to be.”

  • 2023 Tour de France course: One for the climbers
  • Mission accomplished for Landa at Giro
  • Vingegaard says 2022 Tour course was better for him

Landa, by his own admission, will be setting his ambitions a bit lower than the Tour’s terrible twosome.

The Tour podium is an evasive target for Landa.

In 2018, Landa missed the Tour podium by one second and has regretted that near-miss ever since. He was fourth again in 2020 in a move to Bahrain after two unhappy seasons at Movistar.

After hitting stride again with third at the 2022 Giro d’Italia, Landa decided to steer clear of the Italian grand tour in part because the course is laden with time trial kilometers.

In contrast, the 2023 Tour sees the least amount of time trials in a generation.

It’s the Basque Country start that is the final tipping point for Landa.

“That makes it even more important for Landa,” the official said. “No one wants to miss the most important race in the world, especially when with three days in the Basque Country.”

Hype followed Landa ever since he catapulted to the Giro d’Italia podium with third in 2015.

After stints at Ineos Grenadiers and Movistar saw him relegated to a helper’s role or torpedoed by team politics, Landa finally scrapped his way back onto a grand tour podium in May with third at the Giro.

At 33, Landa will be the first to admit he likely won’t be racing to win in July.

Vingegaard and Pogačar will be the five-star favorites for what should be a dazzling tug-of-war for yellow. Behind those two, there are nearly a dozen wannabe contenders for a final spot on the podium.

Egan Bernal might be back in time for a run at the Tour, but there will also be the likes of Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Enric Mas (Movistar), Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco), Romain Bardet (DSM), and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ).

Landa will follow a traditional buildup toward the Tour, with a season debut at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in February, Tirreno-Adriatico in March, and the Itzulia Basque Country and Ardennes classics in April.

Altitude camps and a likely start at the Critérium du Dauphiné will lead to the Tour. All roads lead home in 2023.

Last summer, Vingegaard rode a “home road” advantage with a start in Copenhagen in July to fend off Pogačar to win Denmark’s first yellow jersey in 25 years.

Landa will be hoping for similar magic, with three stages set to open in the Basque Country in what’s a very challenging first week in the 2023 Tour.

Landa Tour Win Possible With Bahrain-McLaren

Basque climber Mikel Landa now has the chance to make his mark in the Tour de France with new team Bahrain-McLaren.

Landa joined the team just as motor-racing giant McLaren ramped up its support to become co-owner and Rod Ellingworth, from Team Sky/Ineos, became team boss.

"Yes. Finally, I found the the opportunity here. I think they have a really clear goal. And I just arrived in the best moment," Landa told FloBikes.

He responded to the #FreeLanda joke that had been going around in recent years, when Landa was locked down working for Chris Froome in the 2017 Tour de France and stuck with two other co-leaders, Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana, in Team Movistar.

"In Movistar, it was more difficult. We were three leaders trying to do our best," Landa said looking back over the years.

With team Astana he placed third in the Giro d'Italia. In Sky, he was fourth in the Tour de France, one second from third place Romain Bardet. With Movistar, he finished seventh and sixth overall in the last two editions of the Tour.

"Yeah, the last four years I did the Tour de France, I've been close. I had a lot of experience before working for Froome, later trying to win my own. I have enough experience," he continued.

"It's possible to win. Winning is pretty difficult but being on the podium, why not? Here with the support of Bahrain-McLaren, it can be possible. Why not?"

This 2020 Tour de France, starting in Nice on June 27, favors Landa with its many explosive stages and few time trial kilometers. Plus, having Ellingworth revamp the team, with helpers like Wout Poels joining, cannot hurt Landa's chances.

"They they gave me the opportunity of being the leader in a Grand Tour, this year at the Tour. Also McLaren can help me and the team a lot with technology, giving me a lot of advantage in the time trial," he said.

"That's very important for me and also opportunity of being a leader, being well-supported. It's what brought me here."

First Remco Evenepoel, now Mikel Landa crashes out of Itzulia Basque Country

S oudal-QuickStep’s misfortunes at this year’s Itzulia Basque Country showed no sign of letting up on Friday, as less than 24 hours after Remco Evenepoel ’s untimely exit Mikel Landa became their second GC leader to crash out of the race.

Both Landa and first-year Belgian teammate Gil Gelders were unlucky enough to crash at the foot of the Urkiola climb, with some 95 kilometres left to race. For Landa, he suffered a broken collarbone.

The two riders, along with Movistar’s Gonzalo Serrano and Sánchez Pelayo, were all DNFs for stage 5. Landa was transported away by ambulance in a neck brace for further checkups.

“Mikel, runner-up at the Volta a Catalunya last month, was taken to the local hospital where X-rays revealed that he has suffered a fracture to his clavicle. He will now undergo further investigation to determine the best path for his recovery,” a team statement said.

Gelders was "given medical attention on the spot and was treated for abrasions".

The latest crash to blight this year’s centenary edition of Itzulia Basque Country comes a scant one day after Evenepoel was one of 11 abandons following a mass crash that devastated the race.

The litany of GC abandons in this year’s Itzulia began even before the race started, with the exit of Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) after a training recon crash. Then  David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) was not able to start stage 3 after he took a fall 4km from the finish and injured his right hand. That was followed by injuries to race leader Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) on stage 4.

Evenepoel suffered a broken collarbone and shoulder blade and will now miss the Ardennes Classics, although his Tour de France debut, where Landa is expected to play a key mountain domestique’s role, does not remain in doubt.

Placed 27th overall when he crashed out, Landa has had a stunning start to the season, finishing second overall in the Volta a Catalunya. That was his best GC result since he took second overall in Itzulia last year behind Vingegaard, followed by a third in the Flèche Wallonne, another race he now seems certain to miss.

Third in the 2022 Giro d’Italia, Landa has had a number of major crashes in his career, with the previous one a serious fall in stage 5 of the 2021 Giro that also left him with a broken collarbone and out of the race.

Landa has also turned in some major performances in the Itzulia, including two runner-up spots, in 2018 and 2023, and also two stage wins in 2015 and 2016.

Meanwhile, Soudal-QuickStep battle on at the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country with just four riders remaining: James Knox, William Lecerf, Pieter Serry and Louis Vervaeke. The race concludes Saturday with stage 6's finale at Eibar.

Mikel Landa confirms Vuelta a España presence, no Tour de France for Basque climber

With the Giro d'Italia under the belt, Mikel Landa will take his time recover from the race and head into a preparing period where he will later on set his sights on the Vuelta a España, as it had been hinted.

The Basque climber had already suggested that he would not be riding the Tour, however the confirmation came yesterday, he revealed to Spanish newspaper 'AS'. After his Giro d'Italia where he finished a strong third place, Landa had taken some time to decide which Grand Tour he'd ride next, but with Bahrain - Victorious already having a strong lineup for the Tour de France , he'll race his home Vuelta a España.

Stephen Williams "over the moon" with breakthrough win against world-class competition in Suisse

He is planning to ride the Clásica San Sebastián and Vuelta a Burgos in preparation for the final Grand Tour of the season, and should be the team leader alongside Pello Bilbao. The team will be fighting for the top places of the Tour de France with Jack Haig, Damiano Caruso and Gino Mäder - giving Landa the freedom to focus on his own goals.

The Vuelta will start in the 19th of September in Utrecht, and the 32-year old will be one of the main favourites in the overall classification.
