Holland America Cruise Line has been around since 1873. It was started as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, which was headquartered in the Netherlands and provided service to America. Since then it has grown to carry over 800,000 passengers a year across all 7 continents, with an emphasis on luxury, mid-size ship cruising.

In 1971, it stopped transporting cargo to offer only cruise vacations. In 1989 it was acquired by Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world. Today, Holland America offers modern amenities and luxury accommodations across 14 mid-size ships.

Holland America offers Gala Nights on its ships. On these nights, dress is formal — a suit, cocktail dress, or gown for women and jacket and tie, dark suit, or tuxedo for men are appropriate. On all other nights, resort casual attire is suggested. This includes casual dresses, slacks, or informal evening wear for women and slacks and collared shirts for men.

On 1 night of each Holland America cruise you’ll get to experience an Orange Party.

Orange is the color most associated with the Netherlands and Holland’s royal family (House of Orange), so it’s only fitting that there be an Orange Party onboard. During the party, you’ll get to sample Dutch-inspired appetizers and drinks and you’ll enjoy live music.

So be sure to pack all of your favorite orange-colored clothing. But don’t worry if you forget to pack something orange — you can find Orange Party essentials in the onboard shops.

A Holiday Cruise offers all of the traditional festivities without any of the work. You’ll enjoy your favorite holiday foods, multiple religious services, a yule log parade, holiday movies, and decorations throughout the ship. Dining and Beverages

As with most cruise lines, Holland America offers both dining options that are included in your cruise fare and options that come with an additional charge. You’ll find everything from casual poolside fare to elegant fine dining.

Dining on Holland America is “As You Wish.” This means you can choose a traditional pre-set seating option or you can dine anytime you choose. You can stay casual by the pool, order room service, or choose one of the elegant dining rooms — the choice is yours.

There are plenty of bars and lounges on a Holland America ship so you can grab a drink and relax anytime. Look for these locations on your next cruise (not all locations are available on every ship).

Each passenger over 21 years old can bring 1 bottle of wine or sparkling wine (750 ml maximum) in their carry-on luggage that can be consumed in a stateroom free of charge. Any additional bottles will incur an $18 per bottle corkage fee regardless of where they are consumed. You can’t bring beer, boxed wine, or any other liquor onboard.

For cruises that depart from and return to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Singapore, this policy applies to passengers 18 years old and up.

For cruises departing from and returning to Japan, this policy applies to guests 20 years old and up.

Most beverages onboard a Holland America ship come with an additional charge . If you’d prefer to pay for your drinks upfront, you can purchase a beverage package.

Quench Package: $17.95 per person per day

Bottom Line: Every beverage package purchase automatically incurs a 15% service charge and must be purchased for the entire length of the cruise. If a guest purchases a package that includes alcoholic drinks, every other guest of legal drinking age in the same stateroom must also purchase the package. Beverage packages don’t apply to purchases made from the in-room mini-bar, Honor Bar, Chocolate Seduction, in-room dining, Half Moon Cay, and any self-service draft beer stations.

Here are some of the highlights:

The Family Ocean View Stateroom is great for families on a budget. This room sleeps up to 5 people and comes with 2 bathrooms (including a tub, which comes in handy if you’re traveling with kids ).

Verandah Staterooms come with floor to ceiling windows that open up to a private verandah. You’ll also find a sitting area, queen-size bed (that can be separated into 2 single beds), and a shower with a premium massage head.

Guests staying in a suite will also receive complimentary mimosas with in-suite breakfast, a premium duvet, binoculars, and an in-suite coffee and espresso machine.

The Signature Suite is a spacious room featuring a private verandah, sitting area, a queen-size or king-size bed, plus 1 Murphy bed and 1 sofa bed. In the bathroom, you’ll find 2 sinks and a full-size whirlpool bath/shower plus an additional shower stall.

Try the Neptune Spa Suite if you’re looking to indulge. These rooms come with spa amenities like yoga mats and access to spa treatments at Greenhouse Spa & Salon. You’ll also find a large sitting area, private verandah, and a bathroom with 2 sinks and 2 showers. Plus, you’ll have access to the Neptune Lounge and a private concierge.

The Pinnacle Suite is the largest stateroom offered by Holland America and features over 1,200 square feet of both indoor and outdoor living space. These suites come with a living room, dining room, pantry with microwave and fridge, bedroom with separate dressing room, whirlpool bath and shower, additional shower stall, soft bed, and guest toilet. You’ll also have access to the Neptune Lounge and a private concierge.

Hot Tip: The Neptune Lounge is exclusively for guests staying in a Neptune Suite or Pinnacle Suite. This private area features worktables, large screen TV, a library, sofas and chairs, and refreshments throughout the day.

Holland America Cruise Line’s loyalty program is called Mariner Society. Once you’ve cruised with Holland America once, you’re automatically enrolled. You’ll earn Cruise Day credits for each night you sail and for onboard purchases.

Bonus credits can be earned when you pay a published fare for a suite or penthouse and for each $300 in eligible onboard purchases.

Mariner Society benefits are cumulative so each level will also have access to the benefits offered at all lower levels.

I learned that Holland America Line offers four different suite categories, and each one comes with extra amenities, but the higher the suite category, the more perks you receive.

Compared to other cruise lines, Holland America’s suite categories are not as complicated, making it easier for guests to choose the one that best fits their needs and budget.

The Vista and Signature Suites have limited additional benefits, while Neptune and Pinnacle Class have upgraded perks such as access to the Neptune Lounge, priority boarding, and exclusive events.

For those on a budget, Neptune Suites are still a great choice, while Signature and Vista Suites may be better downgraded to a Balcony Cabin with Club Orange add-on.

However, Pinnacle Class suites are recommended for spaciousness and Club Orange extras, making them the top-tier suites on the newest ships.

Moving up to the top-tier suites, Pinnacle Suites are over twice the size of Neptune Suites and offer even more space and luxury. Guests staying in a Pinnacle Suite will have access to all the amenities of Club Orange, as well as additional benefits such as a whirlpool bathtub and a private verandah with outdoor furniture. Of course, all of these extra perks come at a higher price point, but for those looking for the ultimate in luxury and personalized service, the Neptune and Pinnacle Suites are an excellent choice. Club Orange Program

Learning about the Club Orange Program on Holland America Line has been informative, as it offers additional benefits that can be purchased by any guest, including priority boarding, exclusive events, and more. The cost of Club Orange varies depending on the length of your cruise, with prices usually around $25 per person per day on cruises of 13 days or less, and $15 per person per day on cruises of 13+ days.

While the program is available to all guests, Neptune and Pinnacle Suite guests are guaranteed Club Orange for their cruise.

When comparing Club Orange benefits with other suite categories, it’s important to note that Neptune and Pinnacle Suites already come with a lot of extra perks, such as access to the Neptune Lounge, personal concierge service, and more. Vista and Signature Suites, on the other hand, have limited additional benefits.

As a fan of personalized service, I was thrilled to discover that Neptune Suite guests have access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge. This lounge offers a more intimate and quieter atmosphere where guests can relax and enjoy a more personalized experience.

The lounge is staffed with a personal concierge who is dedicated to ensuring that every guest’s needs are met, whether it’s making dinner reservations or booking a shore excursion. In addition to the concierge service, Neptune Lounge also offers a selection of refreshments served throughout the day, including coffee, tea, and snacks.

Neptune Suite guests can also enjoy the lounge’s library, which is stocked with a selection of books and magazines. Pinnacle Class suites are even more spacious and come with all the perks of the Neptune Class, plus even more exclusive benefits. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, the Neptune Suites are still a great choice, as they offer many of the benefits of the more expensive Pinnacle Suites at a lower price point.

Saving money on your Holland America Line cruise is like finding a hidden treasure – with a little digging, you can uncover some amazing deals and discounts. What’s Included on a Holland America Line Cruise

Accommodations.

Your cruise fare on Holland America Line covers the cost of your stateroom for the duration of the trip, including daily service by a stateroom attendant. 

Like most cruise lines, Holland America offers a variety of stateroom categories. Your options will range from an interior cabin, to ocean view or verandah cabins , all the way up to a variety of suite options.

The type of cabin you choose will be the main driver of your total cruise costs. So, be sure to review all the options available on your particular ship to find the one that suits your travel party best.

Food and Dining

On every Holland America Line ship guests can enjoy three meals a day included in the standard cruise fare.

The Dining Room is Holland America’s main dining room. For dinner, guests have the option of early or late traditional dining or the Dine Anytime option. Regardless of when you dine, the MDR offers a multi-course rotational menu that changes nightly.

The Dining Room is also open for breakfast daily and for lunch on select days. There’s even complimentary Afternoon Tea.

In addition to this upscale dining venue, Holland America offers several more casual dining spots that are also included in your cruise fare. Some of these options can include New York Pizza, Dive-In, Grand Dutch Café, and the Lido Market.

Whether you choose to dine at the poolside pizzeria or grill or the ship’s buffet, you can eat all you care to enjoy without any added costs.

Further, unlike many contemporary cruise lines, room service is also complimentary. While there are some up-charge items, guests can enjoy items like sandwiches, salads, soup, and cookies for no added cost.

Onboard Activities

Modern cruise ships are a hub of activities and events. There is always something to do on a Holland America ship that will not cost anything. So, whether you’d prefer to just lounge by the pool or partake in one of the many offerings, it’s completely up to you.

On your Holland America Line ship, there will be gym with plenty of strength and cardio equipment, as well as some complimentary classes like morning stretch. Of note, there are also for-fee classes like boot camp, Pilates, yoga, and more.

During the day, you can also participate in workshops and enrichment sessions, play some board games and trivia, or even jump in on a dance class. You can also join some fellow cruisers for a game of pickleball, basketball, or ping pong.

If that’s not enough, there are movies, cooking shows, and other itinerary specific talks as well.

If you are cruising with kids, Holland America Line has plenty of activities for them too. Club HAL is the youth activities program for children ages 3-17 years old, where they can engage in age-appropriate activities and make some new friends along the way.

Nightly Entertainment

At night, your Holland America Line ship comes alive with plenty of entertainment options that are all included in your cruise fare. It wouldn’t be a cruise if there wasn’t nightly entertainment in the main theater. With production shows, comedians, and BBC Earth in Concert, there is certainly something everyone will enjoy.

Holland America Line ships also have several musically inspired venues. The B.B. King’s Blues Club brings the best of blues to the high seas. This intimate entertainment venue features soulful live music paired with great signature cocktails.

Additionally, there is Billboard Onboard. This popular entertainment space is home to live piano music. There is also the Lincoln Center Stage, featuring live orchestra performances.

Not to mention, new on the Pinnacle Class is the Rolling Stone Rock Room with a live rock band.

The best part is that all of these outstanding performances will not cost you anything to attend.

What’s Not Included in Your Cruise Fare

Gratuities/crew incentive.

Cruise gratuities are services charges that are not included in your standard cruise fare, similar to a hotel resort fee. These additional fees are a per person, per day dollar amount that are charged to all guests, usually automatically, across all stateroom categories.

These charges serve as a means to reward the hard-working crew for the excellent service provided during your cruise vacation.

On Holland America Line, this Crew Incentive is $15.50 per person, per day for non-suites and $17 for suites. This fee can be pre-paid, or it will be charged daily to your onboard account.

Of course, you can always tip special crew members above and beyond this required amount.

Shore Excursions

Holland America Line will transport you to several exciting ports of call. Unfortunately, shore excursions are not part of the cruise fare. You can book these tours and additional experiences through the cruise line or through third party retailers for additional costs.

Shore excursions can range from inexpensive walking tours to several hundreds of dollars for unique experiences. These prices are also very dependent on destination, with Caribbean and Bahamas tours usually being cheaper.

Alcoholic (and Some Non-Alcoholic) Beverages

Holland America Line does offer a variety of complimentary beverages. These include juice during breakfast, non-bottled water, iced tea, and brewed coffee.

However, all alcoholic drinks and some non-alcoholic drinks will cost extra. Non-alcoholic options like specialty coffees, smoothies, fresh juice, soft drinks, bottled water, and energy drinks are all an additional fee.

If you care to enjoy any of these beverages, you should consider purchasing a drink package to save some money. Holland America Line offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options depending on your drink preferences.

The most inclusive is the Elite Drink Package which includes all drinks priced $15 and under including Dale DeGroff’s Original Cocktails.

Specialty Dining

While there are many dining venues covered in the cruise fare, Holland America Line also offers up-charge dining venues.

With a culinary focus and renowned chef partnerships, the brand delivers exceptional specialty dining. HAL ships feature specialty restaurants including the Pinnacle Grill, Rudi’s Sel de Mer, Taramind, Canaletto, and Nami Sushi. Thus, we highly suggest you splurge on at least one of these dining experiences during your cruise.

If you do want to dine at one or more of these restaurants, reservations are highly recommended and can be made prior to your sailing on the Holland America website. Reservations can also be made on the ship, but space will be limited.

You will need to purchase an internet package if you want to stay in touch with family and friends, as WiFi is not part of the cruise fare. Holland America offers an unlimited surf and stream package for the duration of your voyage that provides a savings of at least 50% compared to the daily rate.

Spa Services

Spa services and access to the thermal suite are also an additional fee on Holland America Line.

The spas on HAL ships offer a variety of treatments including massages, nail services, teeth whitening, hair services, facials, nutrition consultations, and personal training.

There is also a thermal suite with heated chaise lounges, steam and sauna grottos, and a Thalassotherapy Pool. Thermal suite passes can be purchased per individual or for a couple at a reduced rate.

Other Add-Ons

Finally, other add-ons like birthday or anniversary packages and laundry services will also cost extra. Likewise, if you choose to gamble or shop during your cruise that will be out of pocket as well.

Of course, all pre/post cruise travel expenses are not tied to the cruise either. Thus, when determining your cruise budget , you will need to account for expenses like airfare, a pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel, and transportation to and from the cruise terminal.

Have It All Cruise Package

Now, Holland America does offer a more inclusive rate, the Have It All Cruise Package. This pricing offers additional services and amenities beyond the standard cruise fare.

For a 7-day cruise, this package provides 1 shore excursion up to $100, 1 specialty dining, a WiFi package, and the Signature Beverage Package. Each guest in a stateroom must book the “Have it All” cruise fare to receive the extras.

Holland America Cruise Bucket List: 15 Fun Activities Onboard the Amsterdam

Have you ever been on a cruise before? For some newbie cruisers the thought of spending long periods of time between stops might be discouraging. Although, it is very true that on cruises you will spend some time at sea, the idea that this period would be slow and boring is very far from the reality! This was absolutely the case with the array of onboard activities on my Holland America Line cruise on the MS AMSTERDAM.

The HAL cruise ships have a host of activities and amenities that will put some of the best hotels, and even destinations to shame. Plus, being on a cruise has several advantages, like:

• It’s a cost effective way to see a bunch of destinations in one go.
• You do not have to do as much travel planning. That’s left to someone else.
• No matter how many locations you visit, you get to spend the night in the same bed and room. No packing, unpacking, repacking or lugging suitcases around!

Holland America Cruise on the MS AMSTERDAM

Holland America Line invited me on a two-week segment of their 80-Day Grand Voyage that takes you to Australia and the Far East, including five ports in Japan and 10 days making thrilling stops in China, South Korea, Vietnam and even a short stint on one of the most mystical islands on the planet: Komodo Island where you will get to see Komodo dragons (you should check out their upcoming Grand Voyages !).

During my time time onboard, there were quite a few sea days. But, believe it when I say that on the MS AMSTERDAM these days will fly by in the blink of an eye. That is mostly because there is so much to do and enjoy while onboard the cruise ship. While the destinations are spectacular, to say the least, the things to do onboard Holland America’s Cruise Liner MS AMSTERDAM can be just as fun.

Holland America Cruise Bucket List: 10 Activities Onboard the Amsterdam

1. ✦ eat at every restaurant.

Sometimes cruise food doesn’t have the best reputation. But, your expectations will be exceeded time and time again on the HAL ship. I was impressed! I was treated to some of the most mouthwatering cuisines you could ever possibly think of or come across on your travels. The dining experience on the cruise ship is in keeping with the high-standards set by the cruise liner itself. There are a wide array of dining options onboard including:

• La Fontaine Dining Room
• Pinnacle Grill
• Lido Market
• Dive-In (burgers!)

The main restaurants onboard are: The Lido Market which has a casual buffet-style dining setting on deck 7, the other one is the La Fontaine Dining Room which is a high-class table-service restaurant on deck 3 and 4. There is the fast food eatery ‘Dive-In’ that serves up a mean burger or hot dog as well as a delectable Mexican themed buffet (perfect for when you are lounging by the pool).

If, however, you are in the mood for some fancy flame grilled steak, then you should head out to the Pinnacle Grill where they mainly focus on American Northwest dishes as well as fish options. They will help you celebrate any special occasions in style or maybe just create the perfect atmosphere for romantic dining. We had an amazing dinner there for my friend Cacinda’s (from Points and Travel ) birthday.

If you are feeling a little Italian, then the upscale restaurant ‘Canaletto’ is the perfect choice.  Here, they are all about the traditional Italian eating concept of “spartire” which is all about sharing. Once you order, you can choose to share the dishes with others or have it all to yourself. Either way, the experience and taste are not things that you will soon forget.

I ate at all the restaurants—at least once.

2. ✦ See a Show at the Queen’s Lounge

The Queen’s Lounge is the primary entertainment venue onboard the MS AMSTERDAM. It is a two story theatre which is home to a wide variety of shows including classically trained violinists, comedians, house dancers as well as guest performers from various ports such Japanese Geishas and professional optical illusionists.

There is something for everyone here and a grand show every evening. It is well worth a visit while you are onboard.

3. ✦ Go to the Spa

As most of your days will probably be spent out on the deck sunbathing, it is a welcome blessing that the MS AMSTERDAM has a world-class spa on-board. The ‘Greenhouse Spa & Salon and Fitness Center’ prides itself in being able to help you relax, rejuvenate and leave feeling like a brand new person. They have renowned spa rituals that will pamper your skin; facial treatments that will make you glow; massage treatments that will untie every knot and even hair treatments that will have you looking glamorous for the evening shows at the Queen’s Lounge.

After months of travel, I was in desperate need of a cut and color. And they did a FANTASTIC job.

4. ✦ Watch a Cooking Show at the America Test Kitchen

If you want to spend some time learning how to cook some of the delicious dishes onboard or even from top chefs around the world, you can easily do so at ‘America’s Test Kitchen’. There are lessons, live cooking demonstrations and hands-on workshops that will show you how to quickly whip up a beautiful meal using the most user-friendly recipes. I learned how to make some tasty olive tapenade bruschetta!

The foolproof techniques taught here will make a chef out of you in no time.

5. ✦ Partake in Happy Hour

Who doesn’t love a good happy hour? Happy Hour was every day from 4pm-5pm in the Crow’s Nest and in the Ocean Bar with the buy one get one for $2 option. On quite a few nights there was a Happy Hour from 9pm-10pm in the Crow’s Nest as well.

Wind the day down with a selection of interesting drinks made by specialty bartenders who are more than willing to show off their skills for you.

6. ✦ Take an Art Class

Would you like to learn how to sketch or paint using water colors? You can do so every morning on-board the MS AMSTERDAM. I took a morning class and tried my hand at portrait sketching. Admittedly, I’m still in need of some lessons before I can open my own art gallery but the basics are in there.

There are many other classes too. For instance, you can also learn how to edit, properly display and share your vacation images and videos through the ‘Digital Workshop’.

7. ✦ Play at the Casino

There is a reason why Vegas is one of the most popular cities on the planet: you can become an overnight millionaire there! Well, the MS AMSTERDAM has a miniature Vegas onboard as the Casino has everything you might need from table games to slot machines.

Why not try your luck every now and again during your stay?

8. ✦ See a Movie (and Eat Popcorn!)

You will probably have the time to watch a few movies during your days at sea. There were daily showings on the big screen at Wojang Theatre, and they serve popcorn. The setting is perfectly comfortable and the movie selections are varied in style and taste.

But if you would rather watch something of your own choosing, then you can easily pick something up from the extensively well stocked onboard DVD library and watch it in your own room.

9. ✦ Take a Fitness Class

Yes, you will still need to exercise even though you are on a cruise. You will need to burn off all those calories from dinner. If you want to learn the most effective and efficient ways to stay fit, then you can take a fitness class at the professionally staffed fitness center.

You also have basketball, Volleyball and swimming pools on-board if that is more your speed. But if you’d rather be outdoors, then walk the full length on the outside of deck 3 where 3 ½ laps equals a mile (I did this every morning!). Or you can take a water aerobics class at the pool.

The choices are numerous and all as effective as they are enjoyable.

10. ✦ Go Shopping for a Souvenir

Of course you have to go shopping!! The MS AMSTERDAM offers you the opportunity to enjoy tax and duty-free shopping in various shops featuring fine jewelry, watches, designer fragrances, cosmetics, distinctive gifts, premium liquor and stylish Holland America Line apparel.

I walked away with a sparkly faux diamond ring to wear on my next cruise.

I wish I could do all of these things with my teen boys. We have missed out on doing alot of things because I don’t own a car . They’re growing up so fast and getting older. Bad memories because of their abusive alcoholic father. I have tried to get help but have been turned away. Even their grandparents are hateful towards me and my boys because we’re are German and Asian. I try. I’m holding on by a thread. God help us.

Keep hanging on and keep pushing forward every day. I’m sure it’s hard, but just take one baby step a day to your goals. You’ll be surprised how all those baby steps can add up! Best wishes to you :)

Holland America restaurants: The ultimate cruise guide to food and dining on board

Nonstop access to food is one of the main draws of cruising, and Holland America Line offers a variety of venues and menus for every craving, no matter the time of day.

Every Holland America ship offers multiple restaurants included with your cruise fare, and any guest could be satisfied dining at these locations for the duration of their sailing. The rest of the venues come with additional charges (either a set cover charge or a la carte pricing). They are certainly worth the price of admission; these restaurants are an ideal way to taste more global flavors, dine in a more intimate setting and enjoy more attentive service.

I always recommend choosing two specialty dining experiences per seven-night sailing and spacing them out a few days apart from one another (doing main dining room "resets" in between).

Here, I'll outline all your Holland America dining options and price points. Many of the restaurants detailed below are available on every ship, with a few distinct options reserved for the newest vessels in its fleet — including Iron Chef Morimoto's new sushi-centric specialty dining concept, Morimoto By Sea, and Rudi's Sel de Mer French eatery.

After that, we'll dive into a series of frequently asked questions to ensure you're up to speed on all the pertinent information about Holland America restaurants and dining.

The Dining Room

As the main restaurant on any Holland America ship, the Dining Room serves a sit-down breakfast, elevated lunch and multicourse dinner. Meals here are included, and Indian and kosher menus are available with advance notice. "Featured" and "Morimoto" specials do come with an extra charge (for example, the filet mignon and lobster tail is $18 and the Fresh Halibut XO from Morimoto is $25).

Lido Market

The Lido Market, included with your fare, offers a wide-ranging buffet morning, noon and night to cruisers who aren't in the mood for changing their attire or don't have time for a more formal experience. Expect an array of proteins and hand-carved meats, a large salad bar and custom-made salads of the day, pastries, vegetarian-friendly options, hearty dishes from nearly every global cuisine (Italian, Mediterranean, Asian, Indian and more), and tempting dessert stations.

New York Pizza

Satisfy your desire for thin-crust pizza with a 9-inch pie and your choice of toppings (think: spicy capocollo and sweet Italian sausage or roasted chicken with red onions and barbecue sauce) from New York Pizza. This casual eatery is included in your fare and available on Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. (A New York Deli & Pizza on Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam serves pizzas along with Reubens on rye, corned beef or pastrami sandwiches, bagels and shmear, and more).

When hunger strikes poolside, choose Dive In, the included burger and gourmet hot dog bar — and don't forget an order of crispy fries (served four ways!) on the side. The menu features several veggie-friendly Beyond Meat burgers as well, made from brown rice.

Grand Dutch Cafe

Located in the atriums of the Pinnacle Class ships — Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam — the Grand Dutch Cafe offers Belgian and Dutch beers, a variety of spirits, coffee beverages and made-to-order Dutch fare. Crowd pleasers include Dutch pea soup with buttered pumpernickel bread, apple and bacon pannenkoek (Dutch pancake), vegetable quiche, and toasted ham and cheese with a curry ketchup dipping sauce. Place your order at the counter (a la carte pricing) and a server will bring your drinks and snacks to your table.

Available on Pinnacle Class and Signature Class ships for a $35 cover charge, Tamarind specializes in the flavors of Southeast Asia, China and Japan — think Malaysian lamb and Indonesian pork satay, ramen soup, panang curry coconut chicken, roasted pork belly char siu and dan dan noodles. Sushi creations are made in collaboration with master sushi chef Andy Matsuda.

Pinnacle Grill

This classic steakhouse serves up a selection of 28-day wet-aged USDA Prime steaks and other dishes from James Beard award-winning chef David Burke. The wine collection here is extensive, so guests are sure to find the perfect pairing with any dish. Pinnacle Grill is found on every ship with a cover charge of $19 for lunch and $46 for dinner (half-price for kids 12 and under or free when they order from the kids menu).

An Italian restaurant featuring such classics as ossobuco, spaghetti with shrimp and clams, and veal meatballs, Canaletto is available on every ship for a $29 cover charge (half-price for kids 12 and under or free when they order from the kids menu). The pasta is made fresh daily, and Italian-inspired cocktails (think: negroni, Aperol spritz and bellini) flow freely for an additional charge.

Rudi's Sel de Mer

Rudi's Sel de Mer, named for master chef Rudi Sodamin, is known for French-inspired seafood, such as Dover sole meuniere and fruits de mer. Guests will also find non-fishy classic French dishes, such as coq au vin and steak frites, on the menu, alongside an impressive wine list. This restaurant is available on Pinnacle Class ships for a $55 cover charge, but the menu is available in the main dining room on other ships on select evenings.

Morimoto By Sea

As Holland America's newest specialty restaurant, Morimoto By Sea opened on Nieuw Amsterdam in December 2023. Showcasing Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's talent and creativity, the menu includes everything from Hamachi tacos and vegetable curry to sushi and lobster pad Thai. Expect a $55 cover charge, and look for Morimoto By Sea pop-up experiences offered once per cruise on the fleet's other 10 ships in either Pinnacle Grill or Tamarind.

Holland America Line food: Frequently asked questions

Is the food free?

Meals in the main dining room, Lido Market, New York Pizza and Dive In are included with your cruise fare. All other eateries have a la carte pricing (per item) or a cover charge. (Some specialty restaurants with a cover charge also feature specific menu options with additional a la carte fees.) Each specialty restaurant also adds an 18% service fee.

Do I need a reservation?

Dinner times in the dining room are at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Alternatively, you can arrive at any time between 5:15 and 9 p.m. to be seated at the first available table. You must select your preference for set-seating dining or anytime dining prior to your cruise.

Reservations are recommended for specialty restaurants and can be made prior to boarding (for best date/time choices) or once on board.

What dining options are available for kids?

Children are welcome in any of Holland America Line's dining venues. A special kids menu is available at each venue, including such fare as pizza, chicken strips, mac and cheese, salads and fresh fruit. Menu items from the daily menu are also available in half portions upon request. Children 12 or under pay half price in the specialty dining restaurants or can select items from the regular kids menu for free.

Is room service available?

Yes, 24-hour room service is included in your cruise fare, unless otherwise noted in the in-room menu.

Where does Holland America source its fish?

Holland America recently launched a Global Fresh Fish Program, an initiative that engages a global network of 60 ports to source and serve 80 types of fresh fish on board in all restaurants. This fish goes from port to plate in less than 48 hours. Additionally, Holland America was the first cruise line to serve 100% fresh, certified sustainable Alaska seafood on board its ships in Alaska.

Is there an all-inclusive package that includes specialty dining?

Specialty dining is featured as part of Holland America's Have it All package . Guests receive one night at Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto or Tamarind on six- to nine-night voyages, two nights on 10- to 20-night cruises and three nights on cruises of 21 nights or more (excludes Grand Voyages).

What if I have food allergies?

Guests with food intolerances or allergies that are not life-threatening should contact the Ship Services Department at 800-541-1576. Guests with life-threatening food allergies must provide detailed information to the Guest Accessibility Department by completing a Special Requirements Information Form . Passengers should indicate on this form which foods might cause a severe reaction.

Are there any other food-related offerings to know about?

Don't miss the Cake Me Away dessert celebration event in the Lido Market, which occurs once per seven-night cruise, and the Sea Food Boil pop-ups, which take place mainly on Alaska and Canada/New England itineraries.

What beverages are included with my cruise fare?

Non-bottled water, iced tea, lemonade, milk, some juices and regular coffees and hot teas are available at no cost. You can purchase a drink package to get unlimited beverages for a set price.

Hi all We are big Celebrity and RCCL cruisers who have decided it's time for something different. We are currently booked on the 11/25 Nieuw Amsterdam for a seven day cruise, Just wondering what amenities are given in the bathrooms We are in a veranda on deck 8. Thx

A shower cap, small bottle of Elemis body lotion, and a bar of soap will be placed at the sink.

The tub wall will have larger bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash attached to them. Everything will be replenished as needed.

Holland America provides 3 canister dispensers of liquids in the showers/baths: Body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Plus the room steward will provide bar soap and a small container of body lotion, either of which you can request more of at any time. We usually ask for a second bar of soap to have one in the shower and one at the sink. All the products are Elemis brand, also sold in the on-board spa.

Personal satisfaction to these products varies and some people decide to bring their own preferred products. For myself and DH, we use what they provide and do mostly fine, especially on a short cruise. For a long cruise, say over a month, I usually bring a small tube of concentrated hair conditioner.

If you bring your own liquids, be sure to double bag them, especially if they are in checked baggage on flights because the changes in air pressure can cause leakage.

HAL does not provide Q-tips or cotton balls - I recall that Celebrity did that on the two cruises I had with them; I have not been on RC so can't make a comparison, but others here will be able to help you, I am sure. Enjoy, m--

7 continents in 4 months: Holland America Line reveals 2026 world cruise

If visiting all seven continents is on your travel bucket list, a new cruise from Holland America Line will make it easy for you.

The cruise line’s 2026 Grand World Voyage will traverse the globe over 132 days, stopping at 47 ports in 39 countries. Passengers just have to get themselves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the trip’s round-trip departure point.

“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” Holland America’s president, Gus Antorcha, said when announcing the itinerary to guests currently sailing on the line’s 2024 Grand World Voyage on Monday, according to a news release. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays."

When is the 2026 Grand World Voyage?

The cruise will set sail on Jan. 4, 2026, on the line’s 1,432-guest Volendam ship which launched in 1999.

Where will the cruise sail?

Antorcha said the cruise will visit fewer ports than previous Grand World Voyages “to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”

Passengers will head down South America’s east coast before making their way to Antarctica. There, they will have a four-day Antarctic Experience (though guests won’t disembark due to the ship’s size ).

The ship will then head to destinations like the South Pacific and Australia, with time to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The remainder of the voyage includes Singapore, the Maldives , the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The trip will wind down with a transatlantic crossing before one last stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Passengers will stay overnight at nine ports, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Bali in Indonesia and Alexandria, Egypt. There will also be five late-night departures in Civitavecchia, Italy, Oslo, Norway, and San Juan, among others.

Other highlights include visits to Easter Island, Adamstown in the Pitcairn Islands, and Bordeaux, France.

How much does the cruise cost?

Pricing info is not yet available, but an inside cabin on the line's 2025 Grand World Voyage currently starts at $24,999.

Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel adviser to make a future cruise request for the 2026 itinerary and get priority booking confirmation before the cruise opens for sale to the public in May.

Holland America Line's Collaboration with The Spice House Celebrates Destination Dining and Fresh Fish Program with new Co-Branded Spice Set

The Spice House set sold on board features new Alaska Salmon Rub; Giveaway kicks off collaboration with Holland America Line cruise as the big prize

Seattle, Wash., March 21, 2024 — Holland America Line is continuing to build on its culinary leadership by showcasing fresh ingredients and regionally-inspired flavors in a new collaboration with The Spice House , a purveyor of the finest spices, herbs, blends, and extracts. Through the partnership, a special Holland America Line-branded Spice House set will be sold on board and will feature four premium blends that celebrate the cruise line’s global explorations.

To captivate the essence of one of its most popular cruising destinations, The Spice House collaborated on a sweet and smoky “ Alaska Salmon Rub,” exclusively for the Holland America Line spice set. Also in the set is “Dutch Table” (smoked sea salt), “Legendary Mediterranean Herb” (all-purpose blend), and “ Far East Fish Curry” (salt-free blend). The four-pack, which features custom branded labels and a gift box wrap in Holland America Line's signature orange and blue, is only sold on board in various outlets.

“Using premium spices and seasonings in our cuisine introduces an experience to our guests that celebrates the richness of the destinations we visit,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “We aim to team up with like-minded brands that value authenticity and high quality, and The Spice House brings the flavors of our cruises from ship to home.”

To spice up the partnership even more, Holland America Line chefs created four recipes that each feature one of the blends guests can use at home. Centered primarily around fish, the recipes, which work with meat, seafood or vegetarian, can be accessed on the Holland America Line Blog.

Alaska Salmon Rub: Citrus Alaskan Salmon and Pearled Saffron Couscous Grain Bowl.

Dutch Table: Home Cured Grilled Steak and Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

Far East: Holland America Far East Shrimp Biriyani.
