Star Trek: Picard's Todd Stashwick Will Never Forget Captain Shaw's Monologue

Captain Shaw holding his head on the holodeck

"Star Trek: Picard" has been startling fans of the franchise during its farewell season, mostly through the bold decision on the part of fresh new showrunner Terry Matalas to make the show less bad. Among the most less-bad additions to the series: The achingly pragmatic Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick.

Beginning in "Picard's" Season 3 premiere, the Abbott-and-Costello-adjacently titled "The Next Generation," Shaw cemented himself as a foil to the heroes of "old Trek," preferring that things be done by the numbers — less out of a sense of uptight prudishness and more from a seeming appreciation for all of the ways that space can kill you. By the end of the fourth episode, viewers got an explanation for the character's cautious, decidedly un-Trek-y approach to galactic exploration: He was there at the Battle of Wolf-359, as seen in the "TNG" two-parter "The Best of Both Worlds." For fans of the series, it's a harrowing reveal, painting an iconic moment in the franchise's history from the perspective of someone that wasn't protected by plot armor.

If longtime viewers got a thrill from it, they've got nothing on Stashwick himself, who described shooting the scene as "just one of those moments you never forget as an actor" in a recent interview with Decider . The reasons why he loved it so much? Good writing, legendary source material, and being surrounded by "Star Trek" royalty.

Captain Shaw's speech on Star Trek: Picard is hard to forget

Listing the aspects that made Captain Shaw's monologue work, Todd Stashwick started at the top: "A, getting amazing material," he began. "B, I was fortunate to have a two-part episode called 'Best of Both Worlds' to be able to visualize the event, from at least externally what I would've seen out of a port window, to see what the sky was doing and what the Borg cube was doing to Starfleet."

The story that he's referring to — generally considered to be one of the best in "Star Trek" history — involves Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) being assimilated by the all-consuming Borg and turned into a weapon that's used to decimate 39 Starfleet ships. Meanwhile, his first officer William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is forced to deal with the possibility of having to kill his commanding officer and mentor. It's heavy stuff.

Luckily for Stashwick, he was accompanied by two of the people who would best understand the gravity of the story being told: Scene partner Patrick Stewart and the episode's director, Jonathan Frakes. " ... to have Patrick walk over to you and give you that little arm squeeze of approval and say some kind words, it's just like ... You never know how it's going to go," he continued, going on to say "and then Jonathan behind the camera giving me all the room to play, and then also then letting me do it from beginning to end every time."

The farewell season of "Star Trek: Picard" is available to watch on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping every Thursday.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Shaw in Star Trek: Picard

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.

Todd Stashwick is thirsty.

“I’m gonna go grab a LaCroix,” he tells Den of Geek when we catch up with him over Zoom post- Star Trek: Picard season 3 . “Don’t go anywhere! Stay where you are! It’ll be worth the wait if I grab a coconut LaCroix to wet my whistle.”

No doubt we’re just the latest in a long line of outlets waiting to chat with Stashwick now that Picard has wrapped. Everyone wants to know what the actor will be up to after his scene-stealing turn in the show, and whether he’ll return to the Star Trek universe. The latter hangs in the balance because his character, Captain Liam Shaw, is currently super dead, and a new Trek series called Legacy that promises to see him return in an “absolutely amazing” way hasn’t yet been greenlit at the time of writing.

Ad – content continues below

Stashwick never imagined that his Trek character would become so popular. At most, he thought, people would find his character “refreshing,” but he can remember the exact moment he knew that Shaw was resonating with Star Trek fans.

“It was when the tsunami of memes began,” Stashwick reveals, and he admits there was a learning curve to the influx of attention he suddenly received on social media. “I had to figure out the healthiest way to deal with all of the direct messages I was getting. I realized I only had so much bandwidth to preserve my energy.”

Captain Shaw was introduced as a bit of an antagonist to Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the other legacy Trek characters in season three of Paramount’s hit spinoff show. Shaw had the audacity to deny the former Enterprise captain’s request to follow a distress signal that might put his own ship and crew in the kind of universe-threatening danger that Picard tends to attract. When fans said negative things about him online, Stashwick often waded into the conversation.

“I think my favorite thing is to be a little troll,” he says. “People don’t realize I’m tagged. They’ll be like, ‘he should be blown out an airlock,’ and I’ll be like, ‘Totally, totally. Waste of space.’ My favorite response is when someone goes ‘Oh, sorry, I didn’t realize who was tagged.’ They’re sad they got caught! Much of the internet is the equivalent of keying someone’s car. You jump in, you do a little vandalism, and you jump out.”

As season three progressed and Captain Shaw was dragged further into a dangerous situation against his will, the captain came across like a spacefaring Dante Hicks , which led to some fans describing him as the first real Gen X starship captain.

“I’m smack dab in the middle of Gen X,” Stashwick says. “While the grownups were fighting, we had our heads down looking at each other. We had to figure it all out on our own. We forged our own identity, and we were considered the lost generation; the forgotten generation. I see exactly why people would say that about Shaw.”

Although Shaw seemed exasperated and dismissive in the first half of the season, with his “‘I’m not even supposed to be here today!”’ attitude, Stashwick is engaged on an entirely different level. He seems genuinely thrilled to go out to conventions and meet the fans, and he feels lucky to be part of the Star Trek legacy. While Shaw may have kicked the bucket on Picard , Stashwick namechecks Spock, Data, and Picard himself as characters who have all come back from the dead to boldly go again. If viewers want to see more of Shaw, Stashwick says, “Don’t threaten me with a good time.”

It must be a weird time for the 54-year-old Chicago native, who is by no means new to the acting scene. As a kid, he tells us, he would put on puppet shows to The Muppet Movie soundtrack in his garage, and was doing plays by junior high. He says the applause was addictive, but as you scroll down his 130+ IMDb credits, you realize that this type of fame has been a long time coming. “I’ve been in Los Angeles for 23 years, and I was in New York doing film and television for five years before that. I get a lot of ‘what do I know you from?’ Now at least with Trek , there’s a contingent of humanity that knows I’m Shaw, so it truncates the guessing.”

Stashwick has popped up in Law & Order , Malcolm in the Middle , Supernatural , Heroes , Gotham , American Horror Story , Grey’s Anatomy …the list goes on and on. Sometimes, he’s very recognizable; sometimes not. He tells us a funny story about Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar blanking on him because she’d never seen him without his demon makeup.

“I’m a big fan of those shows,” he says. “But being buried in makeup? I don’t know how Doug Jones does it. I love the ultimate effect, but it feels claustrophobic.” When we start to ask if he’d be willing to come back to Trek if that meant playing an alien in heavy makeup, Stashwick takes it a Hollywood step further. “Oh, if Kevin Feige calls and says ‘come be the villain of the next Marvel film’? Put all the rubber on my face!”

After so many parts in both TV and film, it ended up being his long stint on 12 Monkeys , co-created by Picard showrunner Terry Matalas , that led to Stashwick’s big Trek gig. He says that when Matalas approached him, he knew what “special sauce” he wanted him to bring to season three. “[Terry] and I already had a shorthand, so it was easy to slip into the role of Shaw. They knew how to tailor the suit to fit me. The minute I got the scripts, I could already hear my own voice in the work.”

But what is Stashwick’s voice? On his website , he describes himself as an “action-figure-collecting, comic-book-reading, dice-rolling, video-game-playing, Scifi-fantasy-loving, Tiki-drinking, Con-going, nerdboy.” In other words, he’s one of us, and has recently shown off a custom set of Dungeons & Dragons dice fashioned in Shaw’s command colors on social media.

“I started playing D&D in 1979, and I played for three years before I succumbed to Satanic Panic ,” Stashwick recalls. “At camp, a counselor told me it was the gateway to Satan, so I gave all my books away and stopped playing, cold turkey. When I got older, I realized that was hokum. I came back with a vengeance and bought all my books back from eBay. I have three games on the go every month.”

Along with being heavily involved with his website, where he sells everything from geeky t-shirts to Mai Tai glasses, Stashwick is currently co-writing a Captain America-Black Panther game for Marvel , and you can also catch him in the Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me with Jennifer Garner, but he’s as interested as we are to see what will happen next.

“My favorite phrase is ‘the thing I want to do next is the thing I don’t see coming.’ The best things that have happened to me in my career have been the things that I could not have anticipated, so I’m looking to see what that next adventure is going to be.”

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is streaming now on Paramount+.

A major character introduced in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard is Captain Liam Shaw, and at the purple carpet at the Hollywood premiere, TrekMovie had a chance to talk to actor Todd Stashwick about bringing the character to life. Shaw has been one of the most talked about characters on the show, with fans noticing his tension with familiar characters like Picard, Riker, and Seven. We talked to him about developing the character, his history, and how he wants fans to respond to the captain of the USS Titan.

[Minor spoilers ahead]

Obviously, you and [showrunner] Terry [Matalas] are pals…

We were thick as thieves. From the moment we met at my audition for 12 Monkeys , we were like, “Oh, I know you.”

So how early on in the process were you brought in as they were developing the character of Captain Shaw?

Shaw was developed by the writers in the writers’ room. They obviously knew they wanted to bring me along for the ride. So I think I kind of was already in the development process, whether I was present or not. They already knew my voice because of the four seasons of 12 Monkeys .

There is something a bit different, perhaps even a bit off, about Captain Shaw. There is an expected level of competence with being a Starfleet captain; how do you balance that with also adding this unique take?

When you’ve lived as long as I have, there are bumps along the way. And there are traumatic events that happen in one’s past that actually might make them really good at their job. His history actually prepares him to keep his crew very safe. That’s his primary job is to keep everybody alive.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw and Jonathan Frakes as Captain William Riker

I know you were already a fan, but did you do any special Star Trek prep for the season?

I did my brush-up on kind of a chain of command and understanding rank and positions on the bridge and refreshed myself with that and understanding what class of ship I have. And I wanted to know all that stuff to feel prepared. But everything about the character is on the page. And all I had to do was read it because they wrote such a beautiful, beautiful scripts.

Shaw may be one of those debated Star Trek characters. How do you want fans to feel about Shaw? Love him? Hate him? Respect him? Sympathize? Did you have a goal with your performance?

I want them to be delighted. I want them to delight in him, in all that that means. Not just giddy happy. I want them to be angry with him. I want their heartbreak for him. I want them to love him and laugh with him. All of it.

Assuming Shaw makes it through the whole season, do you have the Trek bug now? Terry wants to do more, are you on board for any spin-off?

Look, I take everything one step at a time. And if all I ever get to do were these 10 episodes of this season, my belly is full. Everything else would be a dessert, because this was a meal.

Are you confirming you are in all ten episodes?

Well, there are 10 episodes of the season. I was just using that as an example.

Jeri is up for that spin-off with Todd

When our very own Laurie Ulster suggested a spin-off with Shaw and Seven, none-other than Jeri Ryan retweeted it, adding how Shaw was her favorite new character. She also used an interesting hashtag to give him the nickname “delightful asshole.”

Plot twist: he is actually a Romulan spy who served with T’Pol while posing as a Vulcan ;)

HAHA – I get that. Clever! For those of you who don’t, re-visit ST: ENT and watch the credits on who portrays T’Pol’s husband-to-be. (And I DON’T mean Trip.)

That would be Michael Reilly Burke. Todd Stashwick played Talok, a romulan operative posing as a vulcan military officer, trying to stop Archer from delivering the Kir’shara to the vulcan capital.

This just in: Working actor would like to have another job. More news at 11.

More news water. Wet.

I think you are selling him short, and it comes across as sort of mean-spirited. I think he loves doing Trek — I don’t think it’s just another job as you are suggesting.

Yeah, Stashwick is the real deal. The man is a proper nerd and a talented actor to boot! He has an ease of delivery with his lines. His approach to the character is one of a man who does not suffer fools.

I still stay to my Speculation :). But well, it’s an Speculation not the Truth. That we will see when :) Please do not take it Personally :)

What is this referring to?

My Speculation about him at the “Preview “Disengage” With New Images And Clips From ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Episode 302”

It’s pretty funny, but Stashwick went hardcore over his love playing a Starfleet captain just like Anson Mount did after he got the role of Pike. I remember going to his twitter page after that season of Discovery started and it was a ton of pics of him as Pike, various memes and a bunch of Star Trek stuff he had in his house etc. Stashwick went one step farther and got a Titan logo tattoo on his forearm lol. He showed it off in a video on RMB YouTube show with Matalas. Once I saw that tattoo I knew he wasn’t being killed off after one episode lol.

It sounds like he will be in all 10 episodes based on hints from people who seen the entire season. If he does, we don’t know if he dies or not but if not I hope he is involved in whatever the next show will be. I really loved Shaw after the first episode. I know he’s very divided now lol but it sounds like he will be softened as the season goes. I’m really excited to see where he goes.

Well, perhaps his Role is also chained with Seven. Perhaps he once was that Violante like her and try to bring her back on the right track to be an Starfleet Officer.. Well. They could show more of his Face on the Trailers, if they want to keep him on this Season. But perhaps they have their (P)Reasons :)

Originally they didn’t show him because I think they just wanted him to be a surprise for people familiar with the actor. But since then he seems to be front and center of the marketing like this interview for example.

As for his relationship with Seven, I do think he has some connection to Wolf 359 many has been speculating and he can’t get over his Borg prejudice. And that’s been a big part of the show in the prior seasons and many feel uncomfortable with her given her past and why she originally couldn’t join Starfleet until Picard and Janeway stepped in. I’m pretty sure Shaw was one of those people who thinks she shouldn’t have been accepted either.

Then he took Seven on his Ship to “break” her to Prove Borg are not trusted?. Well, we will see

But then why he insists of using her “old” Human Name?. It is Complicated! :)

It’s definitely complicated lol. And I know traditionally Captains can choose their first officers, but this may be a case she was just assigned to him. We’ll see.

Yeah, perhaps the Officer he wanted got taken away and he got Seven

I think Matalas has said that Shaw chose Seven, so I’m sure we’ll get some explanation in a bit.

Tiger2, like many of the other Stashwick fans from 12 Monkeys, it sounds like we both want Captain Shaw to live long and prosper in the franchise.

We’ve both seen the semi spoilers that just basically says he has ‘reasons.’

Most of us here have been speculating he was a junior officer at Wolf 359 since the timing lines up age-wise.

I’ve started to wonder though if there might more to it. As I’ve suggested on a previous thread, I am wondering if he had family members or colleagues assimilated and saw them while Borg.

If he is still traumatized and longing for those people, he may find it less difficult that Seven is a ‘former X-Borg’ as he puts it than that she doesn’t completely reject her Borg experience and instead owns part of the identity.

It’s clear that this is an analogy. It makes sense to take it further to give Shaw that underlying longing to ‘restore’ Annika Hansen.

Stashwick is a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community and has played queer roles previously. So I can see him taking this on.

Okay so the Titan-A is a “Constitution III” class

I’m guessing we’re now going to call the Refit the Constitution II class?

Neo Constitution Class… I think this was the Word i heard between the Lines from the Free Clips on the Net

It’s Constitution III-class. Riker calls the ship “neo-Constitution” because that’s how he’s describing it–it’s similar to the Constitution class, hence, “neo.” But the official designation is “Constitution III-class.”

Ah, that’s was it. Thanks

And the dedication plaque identifies it as Constitution III.

Take in Mind, that i have only the Free Clips on the Net.

Hope you can subscribe and watch soon.

That was Enterprise-class according to Probert and Lee Cole, over a decade before it was Okuda’d.

I liked him. He was a proper jerk.

His acting and lines were one of the highlights of Ep 1 for me!

I remember watching the premiere of DS9 way back when and after watching just an hour and after seeing the open hostility aimed at Picard, I dismissed Ben Sisko as being a character I didnt want to watch on a regular basis. Boy was I offbase and wrong! So let’s see how this Liam Shaw turns out!

jellico got lots of fans after his appearance in TNG and written into books and now ‘prodigy’

Class act, this guy. I really like him and have high hopes for his character.

We’re only one episode into the 3rd season and he’s already my favorite new Trek character! Such an asshole! 😉

I have been a big fan of Stashwick’s since his 12 Monkeys days (another big fan here, Tiger2 will know) so I was so happy to see him involved with this season of Picard. And from the looks of things his role is going to be a delight, a kind of pseudo-Jellico.

My first thought from the trailer was that he’d be a son of Jellico…

I’m thinking he’ll surpass Jellico though.

I hope that the fans who’ve taken offence at his (intentionally) offensive starting point will eventually understand where he’s coming from and appreciate him.

My take on Shaw: You are a member of NASA, you had relatives at Peenemünde and therefore you refuse to shake hands with von Braun.

I don’t think he’s the asshole he’s being presented as. He likes his to have his ship in order, and smelt something rotten when Picard and Riker showed up suddenly.

The only really shit thing he’s done IMO, is demanding Seven call herself Hansen.

He probably has baggage with the Borg.

I actually kind of think he is an a–hole, far worse than Jellico who was just a different kind of captain. Shaw seems to be a genuine jerk. But I kind of like that, because it’s basically saying that being an a–hole does not mean you can’t be good at your job.

I was initially thinking there was a big X on his forehead. Now, I’m not so sure. I mean, his character had all the trappings of one that would be killed off, although…it just goes to show you not to jump to conclusions.

Probably good actor whose character as written almost had me turn off the first episode.

Was no thought given to ease us into how hostile he was going to be? They didn’t earn that massive assholery or Seven’s open and immediate distaste for the guy. Besides, how would a guy this perverse rise to his rank of captain? I prefer the POV presented in TOS “Bread and Circuses.” A starship captain is a different breed. The best of the best. They’re going to be the most courageous, the most principled, iron willed… a born leader.

Subtlety isn’t exactly Kurtzman/Matalas though, is it? Starfleet has to be rotten to the core. Everything has to be amped up to the max. Max violence, max character extremes, max crisis… All the time.

It’s exhausting.

I really liked him. I’ve always wanted to see a 100% by the book, rules are rules captain.

Love this new show, season 1 was a bit slow but 2 and 3 very exciting.

The Battle of Wolf 359: A Story of Three Captains

Sophia C

It is much easier to talk about the differences between Star Trek’s prominently featured captains than their similarities. One of the hallmarks of Star Trek as a franchise is its rich, nuanced characters, each with their own unique background and personality. There’s one particularly tragic similarity, however, that unites three starkly different captains. They would each likely give you the same answer as to what the worst moment of their lives was. The Battle of Wolf 359 .

The Battle of Wolf 359 is arguably Star Trek’s most famous conflict outside of the Dominion War. Taking place in the middle of the 24th Century, the infamous battle pitted the United Federation of Planets against their most formidable opponent yet, the Borg Collective. Ultimately, the battle resulted in eleven thousand casualties and thirty-nine destroyed ships. Among the survivors are three men whose lives would be changed forever because of it.

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) , Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) , and Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) were all present for that fateful event, albeit in very different capacities. The Battle of Wolf 359 represents a turning point in each of their lives. A time of loss, shame, and of new beginnings.

captain shaw quotes star trek

The Chosen One

You simply cannot talk about the battle of Wolf 359 without talking about Admiral (then Captain) Jean Luc Picard. Star Trek: The Next Generation’s epic two-parter “The Best of Both Worlds” sees Picard in a whole new light: fighting against the Federation. The very Federation he dedicated his entire life to serving. Picard’s extensive tactical knowledge and experience had been instrumental to his success in Starfleet. They also made him a target. The Borg singled out Captain Picard, forcibly making him the spokesperson for their entire race.

The Borg stripped away Picard’s humanity, his autonomy, and his name. He went from the captain of the flagship of the Federation to a Trojan horse in a matter of hours. Picard went from painstakingly saving lives to ending them at the touch of a button pushed by his own hand. Actions that he was powerless against. Without the quick thing from Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) the Enterprise-D crew, Locutus’ reign of terror would have continued.

The Best of Both Worlds saw Picard’s crew trying to prove that Picard and Locutus were two different beasts. That Picard had no control over his actions and was an unwitting player in the Borg’s sinister game. Picard Spent the rest of his life trying to convince himself of the same.

captain shaw quotes star trek

The Survivor

The battle of Wolf 359 turned Benjamin Sisko from First Officer and family man to a grieving single father contemplating leaving Starfleet. Although not as shocking a transformation as Picard to Locutus, the Battle of Wolf 359 irrevocably changed Sisko’s life. The battle of Wolf 359 acted as the lynch-pin for the majority of his choices early on in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . It is highly likely that Sisko would have never even captained Deep Space Nine if the battle had never happened.

Picard is described by Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) as being taken by the Borg “a piece at a time” in the Best of Both Worlds. You could argue that the same is true for Captain Benjamin Sisko. His entire life was dismantled, piece by piece, in a single day. This time, however, it was Locutus overseeing the destruction.

Understandably, Captain Sisko has difficulty separating Picard from Locutus and blames him for the death of his wife. What are you supposed to do when the man you are told to look up to and collaborate with has the same face as the man who haunts your dreams?

captain shaw quotes star trek

Captain Shaw’s reluctance to take chances and veer off course in the first episode of Star Trek: Picard’s season three makes much more sense knowing his involvement in the battle of Wolf 359. Captain Shaw witnessed the extensive destruction of the battle firsthand, not to mention the cavalier action that led to his life being chosen over forty of his friends. It is no wonder that Shaw evolved to be the meticulous, intentional, and risk-averse captain that we see today.

It was obvious at first glance that Captain Shaw is the antithesis of Jean-Luc Picard. Knowing of Shaw’s experiences at Wolf 359 gives the stark differences between the two men context. Picard was an outlier, given a name by a collective of the nameless. Shaw, on the other hand, was a number in a collective of the named. The Borg specifically chose Picard. Picard was assimilated intentionally. Shaw was chosen to live at random. Picard was Locutus of Borg. Shaw was ten of ten.

captain shaw quotes star trek

The battle of Wolf 359 fundamentally changed these three men forever. Picard lost his autonomy. Sisko lost his wife. Shaw gained his life. Picard sought redemption and regained his stolen humanity. Sisko yearned for escape, and instead gained his own found family. Shaw hid behind order and rigidity to try to stop himself from drowning in uncertainty and only began healing when he lost control. This one singular event will forever link these three captains together, whether they like it or not.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3  airs on Thursdays via Paramount+ for those in the United States. Additionally, on Crave and the CTV Sci-Fi channel for viewers in Canada. However, new episodes air Fridays via Amazon Prime Video in international regions like the United Kingdom. Summary [ ]

Starfleet cadets, 2396

Starfleet cadets at 10 Forward Avenue in 2396

At 10 Forward Avenue in 2396 , Admiral Picard sits alone at a corner table as a plate is put in front of him by a Tellarite waiter . As he prepares to dig into his lunch , a group of cadets from Starfleet Academy approach, asking about an encounter he had had with the Hirogen , peppering him with questions about being hunted by the Alpha . Picard tries to deflect, saying he was not one for telling stories, but the cadets are insistent, asking how he escaped. Picard decides to go ahead, explaining that Lieutenant Commander Worf had constructed a "deadfall trap", turning the hunter into the prey. He goes on to urge them to remember that no matter how bleak or unwinnable a situation may seem, as long as they and their crew remained steadfast in their dedication, one was never without hope.

Five years later , in the present day, Picard stands alone in his quarters on the crippled USS Titan -A as it continues its descent towards the gravity well in the Ryton system nebula, crashing into asteroids on the way. On the bridge , Captain Riker orders more power pulled from other systems to reinforce the shields , but Ensign Kova Esmar reports that they have no systems to pull from. Engines are still down, and they keep hemorrhaging power every time Ensign La Forge tries to engage them. Engineering has sustained damage during the Shrike 's attack. Lieutenant Mura reports that main power was down to nine percent, and the more power they used, the faster it depletes; the ship is bleeding to death. Riker suggests pulling power from either the warp core or the impulse reactors , but Esmar warns that it would cause the reactors to melt down. Lieutenant T'Veen concurs; even if they rerouted power temporarily, they would not have enough power to divert it back to prevent a chain reaction that would destroy the ship. Weapon power is zeroed out, and they are sinking faster towards the gravity well. Diverting power to shields would affect life support , and diverting from the engines would mean they could not escape the gravity well when they need to. Riker asks how long they would have if they diverted everything to life support; Esmar's grim estimate is only a few hours. Riker orders all non-essential systems shut down, and the crew to be gathered into common areas to conserve life support power. Just then, a blinding flash heralds a bio-electrical wave striking the ship. Mura reports damage to the shields, warning that they will lose shields altogether if they don't lower them between impacts. Riker orders the shields lowered.

Riker goes to Picard to report the situation: The Titan is dead in the water and would be crushed by the gravity well within four hours, but life support will have failed well before then. He then concedes that Picard had been right earlier. He remembers seeing the burial of his son Thaddeus , thinking that while the hole in the ground was only six feet deep, it felt like infinite emptiness. He and Picard have been across the far reaches of space, but nothing has proved to him that there was anything after death, and he had tried to shake that ever since Thaddeus died. Troi felt everything, but she couldn't live with him feeling nothing, and Riker admits he couldn't live with that either, which was why he left and came with Picard – because he was running from death, only to find it again. " This is the end, my friend, " he sums up grimly, and advises his old captain to take what time they have left to get to know his son and put his affairs in order. Picard can only watch sadly as Riker leaves to return to the bridge.

Act One [ ]

Seven of Nine , phaser in hand, goes into the quarters of Ensign Foster , the man Jack Crusher had identified as a Changeling . As she opens the closet, the body of the real Foster falls to the deck.

Seven reports to Riker that the Changeling killed Foster days before ambushing Jack in the nacelle control room. To her shock, Riker orders her to keep it quiet. Seven reminds him that there is a saboteur onboard, but Riker points out that if the Changeling's mission was to deliver Jack to Vadic , it had indeed failed, and if Vadic wanted to come after them, she would have done so already. Riker makes it clear he is not suggesting they do nothing, but is emphatic about keeping it quiet for the sake of crew morale, which is already low. He says he could reinstate her, but having her working in an unofficial capacity could work to their advantage. Seven understands completely, and agrees. " Go get the bastard, " Riker orders. Seven begins walking through the corridors, eyes alert for any sign of an infiltrator.

In sickbay , as the body of Ensign Foster is put into a body bag, Beverly Crusher is holding a PADD and counts down from seven to one, just as another flash heralds a bio-electrical wave, not an asteroid as they had expected. Picard enters a moment later, and Beverly asks about their situation. A grim look and a shake of the head is all the answer she needs. Picard understands time is precious, but asks for a moment or two alone with Jack.

Captain Shaw is alone in his quarters, sharpening a knife against a whet stone resting on his propped-up and injured leg, when his door chimes insistently. His visitor turns out to be Seven, and he sarcastically congratulates her on the "bang-up job" her "heroes" have done with his ship and mentions how much he loves the current view outside. Seven gets straight to the point: they have a Changeling onboard, and given the state of the corpse in sickbay, it has been aboard since before they picked up the Crushers. And as much as it pains her to admit, they have a major personnel problem, and no one knows the ship better than Shaw. Shaw beckons her in.

Alone in the conference room, Riker begins recording a message for Troi in the event the Titan is ever recovered, but he finds himself unable to find the words he needs. Meanwhile, Picard takes Jack to the holodeck , the program a recreation of 10 Forward Avenue, which he calls a place of great significance to him, and asks if Jack had ever been there, to which he says he had not. Picard invites him to have a drink, offering something from his own backyard , but Jack admits to not being much of a "wine guy", preferring whiskey . Jack is surprised the holodeck is running given the state of the ship, to which Picard explains that the holodecks run on an independent power source to provide a kind of sanctuary for the crew in times of distress. Jack sarcastically comments on the idea of cramming into a "tropical paradise" while the ship implodes around them, but says this "fake place" is as good as any to die in. Jack begins to talk seriously about the "elephant in the room": when Picard lost his hair. Picard notes his age in the early 20s and tells him to "enjoy it while [he] can", earning a laugh. He asks to know more about Jack's life, and Jack admits he doesn't know where to begin. Picard then decides to cut to the chase and ask why Jack never wanted to get to know him. Jack is quiet for a moment, before mentioning that there was something Picard might be interested in. He recalls a supply run to M'talas IV , "a vile place" as he calls it, where he was trapped in a cargo hold with an Andorian with a broken antenna , which he had tried to help reset. Picard listens as he goes on.

Shaw wonders why a Changeling would infiltrate the ship as a transporter operator, but Seven admits she doesn't know, as she had never encountered them before. Shaw has, calling them "walking, talking clay-dough", able to replicate appearances on sight, as well as voices, mannerisms, and speech patterns. Typically, the easiest way to discover an infiltrator is to ask a simple question about something they should know, and if they give a wrong answer, " boom, Changeling, " as he puts it. Seven points out that it would require considerable knowledge about the rest of the crew. Shaw suddenly remarks that they had both gotten off on the wrong foot, and he underestimated Seven, believing she would be a great captain someday, before qualifying that this would be something he would say if he were a Changeling (" and not just a dick, " as Seven adds). However, he does admit she was right about one thing: there are five hundred people on the ship, making it difficult to find one infiltrator. He suggests baiting the Changeling, making them come to her, by "steal[ing] their pot", before "sadly" noting he doesn't mean cannabis . He explains that Changelings cannot hold solid form for too long, and have to regenerate in liquid form. Based on Starfleet 's files on Odo , he suspects the Changeling Foster has some kind of receptacle in which to regenerate, and tells her to find it; it would have leftover "residue goo" (which he shortens to "resi-goo") which could be input into the computer, allowing her to scan the ship for their saboteur.

As another wave shakes the ship, Seven tears Foster's quarters apart, searching for the pot. She then notices a shadow in one of the light fixtures, and finds the pot , laughing to herself as she finds "resi-goo" at the bottom of it.

On the bridge of the Shrike , outside the nebula, Vadic rises from her chair and walks over to a nearby console. With a knife , she removes her left hand, revealing that she too is a Changeling. The material shapes into a levitating face, which demands a report. She explains that the Titan cannot escape the gravity well. When told to pursue, Vadic says it is not possible with her ship's payload. The face again demands she pursue. Vadic protests that it would be suicide, but her contact counters that it would be suicide to refuse, reminding her that everything is expendable, even Vadic herself, in their effort to obtain and deliver Jack, or "the asset" as it calls him. Vadic finally agrees and orders the portal device disengaged from the ship before the Shrike returns to the nebula.

Act Two [ ]

At 10 Forward Avenue in 2396, Picard relates the story to the cadets about his encounter decades before with the Children of Tama , whose language was based on metaphor . Having told several stories by then, he tries to get back to his lunch, but one cadet asks about an incident with his friend Jack Crusher , regarding a mishap aboard a shuttle, later calling it a "no-win scenario". Picard recalls he had been about the same age as the cadets, and perhaps even "a little reckless".

In the present, a young ensign from the Titan 's crew enters the holodeck, asking if it is private; several other officers are waiting outside the door. Picard beckons them all in. Jack can see what Picard had been trying to get at, that their environment would make things "better" somehow, but he doesn't feel he needed it. Picard, however, thinks that everyone needs some kind of connection, and tells him to look around. The Titan crew are both tired and scared, but are choosing to stick together, some holding onto one another, as if it is the last moment of their lives. Jack finally decides to open up, explaining he grew up on his own. He had his mother, but he was content with being on the outside, and didn't feel he needed a "moment". Picard admits that perhaps he himself does.

Seven calls the biochemistry lab to have a substance – the Changeling residue – scanned. Though the biochemistry lab is closed to conserve power, she insists it is an emergency. Just then, an ensign pulls his phaser and kills one of the other crew, before turning and vaporizing the pot in Seven's hand. Seven pulls her own weapon and blasts off one of the man's arms, seeing the Changeling regenerate its solid form for herself. He charges at Seven, and she fires several more shots, and it goes completely gelatinous before seeping into the wall vents. She calls sickbay to inform them an officer has been killed. Beverly, who seems to know what is coming, remarks to herself that it is about to get worse.

Jack asks Picard about the "worst jam", other than their current situation, he has ever been in. Picard remembers it had involved Jack's namesake. Jack always wondered why his mother had named him for her first husband. Picard explains that the elder Jack was his best friend at the Academy, and that if he had had the opportunity, that was the name he would have chosen for his son too. They were on leave on Argelius IV and met two "delightful and enthusiastic" young women there before being called back to the USS Stargazer . Picard decided to "borrow" a shuttle for him and Jack to accept the women's "invitation" for a romantic encounter ("get laid" as the younger Jack puts it). On their way back to the ship, a micrometeoroid shower struck the shuttle at high speed, disabling the engines and life support, and Picard had disabled the comms so no one on the ship could know they had "borrowed" the shuttle. However, they improvised a system diverting power between the docking thrusters and life support, "inching" their way in a ten-hour trip before they made it back to the ship. They had been in sync throughout, Jack navigating, Picard firing the thrusters. Picard can see that Jack has already heard this story and asks if his mother told it.

Just then, Shaw enters, walking with a cane , complimenting the "harrowing tale of survival", and noting that Jack's mother was "liberal" with her pain medication . He asks Jack if Picard ever brought up when they first met; he had been aboard the USS Constance on stardate 44002.3 , thirty-four years earlier . Picard remembers all too well what he's referring to: Shaw is a survivor of the Battle of Wolf 359 , in which forty Federation starships battled against a single Borg cube . Shaw had been in engineering during the battle, and then the next moment, he said it felt like space was burning. Fifty of the Constance 's crew made it to the life deck , but there was only one escape pod , with ten seats. They had all been friends, and they didn't fight over who would live or die; they waited for orders. A lieutenant came down and began picking out the crew to go into the pod, and Shaw, "just some dipshit from Chicago " as he refers to himself, was the last to be chosen. The lieutenant didn't even choose herself, simply ordering the crew to go. Ever since, he has always wondered if the lieutenant made a mistake ; eleven thousand people had died in the battle, and yet he had survived. He asks Jack if he knew where his "old man" was during the battle, before telling him: Picard had been on the cube. He had been assimilated by the Borg , who gave him the name Locutus : " the only Borg so deadly, they gave him a goddamn name, " he rages. Jack tries to shut him down, but to Shaw's clear surprise, Picard stops him, saying it is alright and he understands, before quietly leaving. Shaw, clearly shaken by his memories, looks around at his crew staring at him, and apologizes, remarking that at some point "asshole became a substitute for charm".

Jack catches up to Picard in the corridor , assuring him he didn't need to explain himself, but Picard is glad to talk to him anyway. Just then, Beverly sees them, explaining that she had been counting the period between the energy waves from the gravity well striking the ship, and found a pattern, a pattern that matched that of contractions leading to childbirth. If the smaller waves were any indication, that "birth" will destroy the ship. They have to escape, but they have no power… until Jack realizes that the waves' energy could be used to let them "hitch a ride" out.

The three of them take the idea to Riker, who considers it insane. Both Picard and Jack insist it could work, using the waves to ride out, away from the nebula, the gravity well, and the "space babies". Beverly clarifies that it is clear they were swimming in the amniotic fluid of a spaceborne lifeform, and that they had encountered similar creatures in the past, such as the Farpoint creature . Familiar with the shuttle story, Riker points out that the Titan is not a two-man shuttle, and can only see trouble: using the thrusters would drain the power, they have no sensors to navigate the asteroid field, and the power array could explode. Starfleet protocol states they need to stay put and wait for rescue, but Picard counters that no one is coming to help them: if they stay put, they will die. Looking down at the recording he was trying to make for Troi, Riker replies that at least they would leave something behind. Seeing this as well, Beverly points out that Deanna would tell them it is about trust. They are all together in this moment, and she thinks they should do what they spent most of their lives learning to be great at. Picard agrees, reminding him that they have been in such situations before, and if it is the end, they will face it together. Riker finally gives in, recalling that the nacelles are protected from absorbing too much radiation, but if the covers are opened manually, they could possibly absorb energy from the wave that would go directly into the warp core. All are in agreement. " Then let's get the hell out of here, " Riker says, speaking for them all.

Act Three [ ]

Riker addresses the entire crew, explaining the plan. He elects to be honest, calling it a "hell of a risk", and that if anything went wrong, they would know quickly. Most of them do not know him, but he knows something about them: He is only as effective as they are, and his experience has taught him that if they work together, they will get through.

Picard and Seven approach Shaw in his quarters. Picard knows he is the last person Shaw wants to see at this moment, but they need his help, despite the fact that Shaw is indeed a "dipshit from Chicago". Shaw is aware of the plan, and knows they realized that despite the refit upgrades, the nacelle covers are two decades old, and none of the engineering crew know how to hot-wire them, so they came to an "old grease monkey". Shaw tells Seven to give him five minutes and meet him in nacelle control.

Beverly counts the period between waves, and warns Riker they would need at least one more for it to work. Meanwhile, Shaw and Seven get to work. Shaw suddenly notes that if the Changeling really wanted to sabotage them, the best place to do it would be right there and then. He comes to a realization, and as much as she hates to admit it, Seven has the same idea, and reports it to Riker. Picard has Jack stay on the bridge with his mother, while Riker has all of the available power diverted to thrusters. All over the ship, power begins to go down as it is diverted, and Esmar warns they have only a few minutes of life support. Riker tells the crew to take a deep breath and hold it if they can. Shaw calls in, needing a few more minutes for the nacelle covering. Beverly's readings show the last wave coming in two minutes, giving Shaw only that much time. Riker then turns the conn over to Picard, as he is the only person there with any experience "flying blind". Taking the center seat, Picard has La Forge bring them about to position them for the wave, and aft thrusters at one-quarter, before giving the order: " Engage. "

Act Four [ ]

The crew works to divert every available bit of power they can for the thrusters, as they need full power to ride the wave. Shaw is able to get the cover open for the port nacelle. Riker asks if they can manage it alone, and they assure him they can. The door opens to herald La Forge, who says she was sent down to help. She asks if they will still be able to fly with only one cover open. Just then, Seven puts her phaser to La Forge's head, revealing she told Riker not to send anyone. When La Forge refers to Seven as "Commander Hansen", that proves to be her undoing, and Seven fires; La Forge was the Changeling. Shaw asks how she knew, and Seven pointedly replies that La Forge always calls her "Commander Seven", out of respect. " Good call, " he concedes, and gets back to work.

The real La Forge is at the helm, working with the thrusters. Riker asks for an update on the nacelle covers, just as Shaw disconnects the system. " Open for business, " he replies. But they have the asteroid field in front of them, and La Forge has no contact sensors. Picard has Jack call out the contacts, while Picard orders the thrusters, just like he had on the Stargazer shuttle. On one particularly close call, Jack tells Picard to wait a few seconds before giving the order. Picard elects to go with his instinct, and sure enough, it works out. Thrusters are up to 98 percent, but there is no more power to divert. With nothing left but to go all in, Riker orders power diverted from life support. T'Veen counts down to the gravimetric detonation from the gravity well, and a few seconds after "one", the wave goes off. The energy goes into the open covers and directly into the warp core, recharging the ship and bringing systems back online. Picard orders La Forge to gun the engines and stay with the wave, the young bridge crew working together seamlessly to correct any problems. With the warp nacelles able to funnel the massive energy influx to their full potential, La Forge reports that it will bring the warp drive back online in 90 seconds. T'Veen reports the nebula is changing around them.

Suddenly, Mura brings them up short: the Shrike is directly in front of them, and Vadic is clearly eager for a fight. Riker asks if the tractor beam is operating, and when La Forge confirms it is, he orders the beam to pick up one of the asteroids. When he judges the time right, he orders keel thrusters, and then has the beam cut, hurling the massive asteroid head-on into the Shrike , which tumbles head-over-heels while the Titan sails right by. The Shrike crew frantically reports that the warp core had gone into emergency shutdown to stop it from going critical, and impulse engines are offline. They will need at least an hour for repairs. Vadic can only sit, head in her hands, as she has once again lost her quarry.

Shaw and Seven arrive on the bridge as the nebula begins to break apart, and thousands of jellyfish-like creatures swim around the ship. " To seek out new life, " Beverly whispers in wonder. Riker, glad to have survived, thinks they should "boldly get the hell out of here", and orders La Forge to take them to warp. The Titan crew, even Shaw himself, are greatly relieved to have survived the ordeal together and would now be going home.

At 10 Forward Avenue five years earlier, Picard wraps up his story to the cadets, explaining that one was only as good as those around them, and that their crew become a part of them: " They lift you up to accomplish the things you could never do alone. " Again, he tries to get back to his lunch, when someone else suddenly speaks up from the bar – Jack, wearing a hat and trying to look inconspicuous. He mentions how Picard went on about his crew and life in Starfleet, but he wonders: what about life outside of Starfleet? What about an actual family? Unaware of who he actually is at this time, Picard says simply that he considered Starfleet to be all the family he ever needed. As the cadets applaud his answer, their shifting bodies obscure Jack momentarily until they part to show an empty bar stool. In the present, Picard suddenly recalls that memory and connects the dots.

William T

" I–I don't quite have the words yet… but we witnessed a kind of birth here, and it reminded me that there's a whole universe out there. "

Riker speaks with Troi over the comms, trying to explain his feelings, reaching out after what the Titan had just been through. She assures him she is glad that he is alright, as is the crew. He admits that something is different now, and he doesn't quite have the words for it, but they had witnessed a birth, and it reminded him that there was a whole universe out there, and that it could be both beautiful and amazing. She notes he has not said anything so "lovely" in a long time, and Riker concedes this, apologizing for it, and expresses his willingness to fix things with her. She asks if he and Picard are in trouble, and he admits he doesn't know yet.

In his quarters, Jack throws some water on his face when he sees a red, spreading growth reflected in the mirror. Voices begin echoing in his mind, whispering phrases like "find me" and "together soon", while his mind's eye sees visions of apocalypse and a door opening. After pounding his head and trying to clear the images, Jack is only left to look, haunted, at his own reflection.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" Don't come. Don't come. Fine, open. "

" I think we need to talk about the elephant in the room. " " Yes, of course. " " The hair. When did it go? " " You're, uh, what? 23? 24? Enjoy it while you can. "

" Look, you and I got off on the wrong foot. I underestimated you. You have great instincts. You're a natural leader, make a great captain one day. Which is something I totally would say... " " If you were a Changeling and not just a dick. " " Now you're starting to catch on. "

" So… so… maybe you get them to come to you. " " How? " " Bait them. Steal their pot. " " Pot? I'm assuming you're not referring to cannabis. " " Sadly, no. "

" No sensors. No visuals. Ten fucking grueling hours. He and I in sync though. Him navigating, me firing the thrusters, simply hoping, until, finally, we were home. "

" Why – why me? I'm just some dipshit from Chicago. Now, I'm... lucky number ten. "

" Eleven thousand dead. And do you know where your old man was on that day? He was on that Borg cube , setting the world on fire! Forget about all that weird shit on the Stargazer . The real Borg are still out there, and they have a name for you: Locutus of Borg . The only Borg so deadly they gave him a goddamn name. " " All right, that's enough! " " No, no. It's alright. I understand. Computer, arch. "

" Captain Shaw, I realize that I'm the last person you want to see right now, but I need your help despite the fact that you are indeed a dipshit from Chicago. " " Nice. "

" Excuse me, admiral? You went on and on about your crew, your life in Starfleet. Did you have a life outside of that? What about a... a real family? " " Young man, Starfleet has been the only family I have ever needed. "

" Will, did you just throw an asteroid? " " Goddamn right I did. "

Changeling report

Odo's brief appearance

  • While discussing how to root out a Changeling, Captain Shaw hands Seven a PADD that includes an image of Odo .
  • Like Argelius II , the system's fourth planet, Argelius IV , was also home to alluring women.
  • Shaw also reveals that he is from Chicago , Illinois . (The actor who portrays Shaw, Todd Stashwick , is from Chicago as well.)
  • He also says, "Forget about all that weird shit on the Stargazer . The real Borg are still out there", obliquely referencing the ending of PIC Season 2 , where a more benign Borg collective, led by Doctor Agnes Jurati , was presented. It serves to clarify that the original Borg collective still exists, also foreshadowing its actual involvement in this season.
  • The stardate given in Picard's admiral's log , 78183.10, helps roughly date the episode as taking place 37 years post TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ".
  • The Changeling posing as Ensign Foster becomes the second Changeling embedded with Humans to die this season. It is further revealed that their pursuer, Vadic , is too a Changeling.
  • The Changeling bucket discovered hidden behind a lighting fixture is a visual callback to the overloading phaser in Captain Kirk 's quarters found behind a red alert indicator during the events of TOS : " The Conscience of the King ".
  • This episode addresses the reason for holodecks containing independent power cells, first referenced during the macrovirus outbreak on the USS Voyager . ( VOY : " Macrocosm ") Previously, holodecks had been tied into the ship's main power supply and were shut down by the computer during emergencies. ( TNG : " Booby Trap ")
  • This was the first episode of the series in which a stardate was given.
  • Reference is also made to the Hirogen ( Star Trek: Voyager ) having found their way to the Alpha Quadrant at some point. Presumably, this is at some point while Picard still commanded the USS Enterprise -E, as he describes a trap laid by "Lieutenant Commander" Worf .

Previously , while helping Jack Crusher find out what’s behind the red door plaguing him, Counselor Troi discovers their most destructive enemy on the other side — the Borg . Feeling more alone and abandoned than ever, Jack commandeers a Titan shuttle and follows the voice in his head directly to the Borg Queen , and tired of fighting, he succumbs to the Collective and becomes Võx, the Borg’s voice itself.

With Geordi and Data’s help combing through the Shrike ’s database, the Titan discover the Changelings conspired with the Borg, united against a common enemy, to weaponize Picard’s altered DNA by implementing it into the transporter system architecture across all starships. With their insidious infiltration successful, the new DNA was introduced to anyone who stepped inside a transporter, assimilating the entire fleet this whole time without anyone ever knowing. Unable to warn senior officials in time, Starfleet has been compromised and assimilated under the Borg’s control.

As Starfleet cripples itself from within, the only way Picard and his crew has a fighting chance of stopping assimilation across the entire Sol System and beyond is to find an older and analog ship, not connected to the fleet’s autonomous synchronization. With that, Geordi surprises them with a project he’s been working on over the past two decades — the reconstruction of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D , their old starship.

In Episode 10, the series finale of Star Trek: Picard , “ The Last Generation ,” in a desperate last stand, Jean-Luc Picard and generations of crews both old and new fight together to save the galaxy from the greatest threat they’ve ever faced as the saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation comes to a thrilling, epic conclusion.

The United Federation of Planets' President Anton Chekov, broadcasting a transmission across all emergency channels, warns all who is listening to avoid Earth at all costs. A signal of unknown origin has turned all their young officers against them, assimilated by the Borg. While their fleet is compromised, planetary defenses down, and nearly out of time, the president calls upon the legacy of his father, Pavel Chekov , reminding them, "Hope is never lost. There are always possibilities." Until then, he implores everyone to save themselves. One of his personnel's voice is heard urging the president to get into an escape pod just as the connection is lost.

On the Enterprise-D bridge, Beverly, Worf, Riker, Picard, Deanna, Geordi, and Data look ahead at the viewscreen in 'The Last Generation'

The crew aboard the Enterprise -D, Jean-Luc Picard, Geordi La Forge, Worf, William Riker, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Deanna Troi, and Data, share concerned expressions following the emergency transmission. Worf notes that the fleet has initiated an attack formation against Earth, while Geordi calls out that orbital weapon platforms have been destroyed. Thankfully, the Spacedock's defenses appear to be repelling the assault. Data grimly points out all other Starfleet and civilian ships have gone silent; they are the cavalry. Deanna warns that if Spacedock falls, there will be nothing standing between an assimilate fleet and Earth, with Beverly continuing that if Earth falls, then everything falls — every planet, every system. Believing that the Borg Collective is controlling the fleet, Picard orders Data to scan the system where long-range sensors pick up a Borg vessel on Jupiter.

On the Enterprise-D bridge, Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard surround and embrace Jack in his Vox suit as the parents hold hands in 'The Last Generation'

Aboard the starship, as Jack is embraced by his mother and father, Picard welcomes him to his parent's former home, the Enterprise -D.

As the Enterprise and Titan navigate the Frontier Day fleet wreckage in Earth's orbit, Riker records his captain's log noting Beverly, now welcomed back to Starfleet and promoted to admiral, is the new head of the Starfleet Medical Branch where she has initiated a fleet-wide transporter solution to purge young officers from the Borg infection as well as new technology capable of scanning for irregularities such as those possessed by the rogue Changeling faction.***

Close-up of Tuvok looking ahead of him while seated in 'The Last Generation'

In the Titan 's Observation Lounge, the real Captain Tuvok debriefs his former colleague and friend Seven on Starfleet's assessments, in regards to the commandeering of the U.S.S. Titan with her assistance, taking in their past and present service, the crew of the former U.S.S. Enterprise are receiving a full pardon. As the Vulcan notes she disobeyed Shaw's direct orders, Seven interrupts him believing her instincts and judgement does not fall in line with that of Starfleet; and as a result, she's resigning. Raising an eyebrow, Tuvok presents Seven with a holo-disc Starfleet Command received before her setting course for the Ryton System. Playing the holo, Seven sees it's her officer review assessment from Captain Shaw. He acknowledges he's a relic of an older time that followed the book, and states that for every poor trait Seven possesses, it doesn't compare to her bravery and loyalty. He believes that the book she writes will be great, even highlighting that the rules she breaks were broken to begin with. As such, he recommends she be promoted to captain upon their return to port. Shocked and touched, Seven's eyes fill with uncharacteristic tears. Tuvok tells Seven, "Resignation denied, Captain."

Worf and Raffi face one another in 'The Last Generation'

Worf approaches Raffi in her quarters as she plays a transmission from her ex-husband Jae. He and their son Gabriel are in awe of the things she's done to save everyone and asks when they can see her and introduce her to her granddaughter. She questions how all of their monitors lit up at once, each new-wave broadcasting her face and every classified valor recommendation she's received. Worf knowingly retorts that whoever leaked that information is an honorable maverick , with Raffi adding, "a dear friend." Worf wishes her happiness with her family, addressing her, "Raffaella, warrior of the House of Musiker." Surprising her, Worf offers her an uncharacteristic hug.

Meanwhile, Data now adapting to the unfamiliar terrain of human emotions, sits in a counseling session with Deanna. He did not anticipate being human would be as difficult as the desire to be human.

One year later, Jean-Luc, Will, and Geordi stand aboard the Enterprise -D, re-situated in its final resting place in Hangar Bay 12, taking in their former ship one last time and reflecting how it's a testament to why the past still matters. They switch off the proverbial and literal lights as the initiate shutdown sequence. Geordi promises to take good care of her as she had always taken good care of them.

On a shuttle, Jean-Luc and Jack Crusher look forward smiling as Beverly Crusher smiles facing Jean-Luc in 'The Last Generation'

Approaching Spacedock, Jack in a Starfleet officer's uniform paces back and forth behind his parents. Beverly playfully chides him for his nervous, which he adamantly refuses, as Picard recalls how nervous he was for his own first posting within Starfleet. She tells Jack it's an honor that Starfleet trusted him enough to put him on an accelerated track; however, Jack counters it could just be nepotism. Picard reassures him that "names mean almost nothing," and this was all his son's doing and he's very proud, bringing a smile to Jack's face. Picard realizes that he never told him which ship he's posted, to which Jack explains this is why he's nervous, not for himself. As they enter the port bay, Picard admires the Titan just as Beverly apologizes for the subterfuge. As their shuttle rises, he takes in the starship's new designation — U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-G  — rechristened in honor of him and his crew. Picard is visibly touched by the gesture.

Aboard the Enterprise -G, Ensign Jack Crusher joins Captain Seven and First Officer Raffi at command on the Bridge as the ship's special counsel, with Raffi amused by Starfleet giving "a thief, a pirate, and a spy their own ship." For this first official mission together, along with Bridge crew members Esmar, Mura, and Sidney La Forge, Seven reminds them this is just a shakedown cruise only.

The original Enterprise-D crew (Deanna, Riker, Picard, Beverly, Worf, Geordi, and Data) sit around the poker table while raising a glass in 'The Last Generation'

At 10 Forward, Picard, Riker, Troi, Beverly, Geordi, Worf, and Data have once again closed down the bar. Troi calls out Beverly for cleaning out the place of its Bloodwine, resulting in some side-eye from Guinan. The good doctor just wants to celebrate with her friends, then pleads with Worf to showcase his "adorable singing voice." The Klingon warrior suggests calling it a night as he's leading a Mugato meditation lecture in the morning at the Academy.****

The crew passes the final toast to Picard, who quotes Shakespeare's Julius Caesar , "There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves or lose our ventures." And to that end, Picard pulls out a deck of playing cards delighting his friends, keeping them out longer.

Back on the Enterprise , as Jack unpacks his belongings in his crew quarters, he's startled by a voice that appears behind him. He recognizes the being before him as Q , based on what his father has told him, believing him to be dead. He chides the next generation for thinking so linearly. Q promises, "Young mortal, you have much ahead of you." Jack notes that Jean-Luc had told him that humanity's trials were over, to which Q responds, "It is, for him. But I'm here today because of you. You see, yours, Jack, has just begun..."

** " Unimatrix Zero, Part I and II " - Picard's decision to assimilate himself into the Hive mind is reminiscent of this Star Trek: Voyager two-parter where Captain Janeway, Tuvok, and B'Elanna Torres allow themselves to be assimilated as part of a plan to infiltrate the Collective and help several drones recover their individuality.

*** " The Child " - Admiral Beverly Crusher's new post at Starfleet Medical calls back to her temporary post. In the second season of The Next Generation , and noted in its premiere episode, the Enterprise -D saw the arrival of Dr. Pulaski as Dr. Crusher left to become head of Starfleet Medical while the crew take on duties to care for her son Wesley after Picard allows him to remain on the ship.

**** " A Private Little War " and " Mugato, Gumato " - Worf wishes to call it an early night as he has a workshop on Mugato Meditation. The ape-like species is first introduced in The Original Series' "A Private Little War" where Captain Kirk had two less than ideal run-ins with a couple mugatos. In "Mugato, Gumato," the U.S.S. Cerritos is sent to Frylon IV to investigate a mugato attack where the crew discovered poaches were attacking the mugato population for their horns.

***** " Q Who " and " Farewell " - It was Q himself who first introduced the crew of the Enterprise-D to the Borg, in "Q Who," revealing how wholly the Federation was for a future encounter. Q was last seen in this episode which culminates his complex relationship with Jean-Luc Picard spanning 30+ years. Q was dying and he wanted to ensure that Picard would not suffer the same fate as him -- dying, alone .

You don’t get where you’re told to go by standing in front of it and then moving the track.” A breakout character in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is Todd Stashwick’s irascible captain of the U.S.S. Titan-A, Liam Shaw.  A deeply flawed but dedicated Federation officer, Shaw is at first a hindrance to Picard and Riker in the quest to rescue Dr. Crusher.  However his confessional monologue about the trauma suffered at Wolf 359 endeared him to fans and made him an indelible part of Star Trek lore. This 1:6-scale figure re-creates Captain Shaw in exquisite 1:6 detail. Standing approximately 12 inches tall, every element, from his 24th century tunic to his custom black boots, is authentically reproduced. The original portrait sculpt of Todd Stashwick as Shaw has an authentic, hand-painted likeness. Captain Picard's Best Story Is in a Surprising Star Trek Show

  • Patrick Stewart's iconic performance as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine is a career highlight.
  • Picard's traumatic assimilation by the Borg in "The Best of Both Worlds" shaped his character and haunted him throughout the series.
  • Deep Space Nine delves into Picard's guilt and trauma from the perspective of Benjamin Sisko, offering a new angle on forgiveness and healing.

Jean-Luc Picard made Patrick Stewart a household name, launching him from the comparative obscurity of the English stage thanks to the now-classic Star Trek: The Next Generation . Stewart's long association with the role let him deliver a number of performances as Picard that now stand as career highlights. That includes Season 5, Episode 24, "The Inner Light" in which he lived out the life of an ordinary man on an alien world, and Season 2, Episode 9, "The Measure of a Man," when he delivered a stunning courtroom argument in defense of Data's free will.

However, out of all of Stewart's Star Trek appearances, his best performance as Jean-Luc Picard might not have come in The Next Generation or even the de facto follow-up series Star Trek: Picard . Star Trek: Deep Space Nine features a cameo by Stewart in the series' premiere, in which Picard encounters one of the survivors of Wolf 359. Not only did it signal a key moment in the character's biggest ongoing plot thread, but it gave Stewart a moment to quietly shine in his signature role.

The Borg Will Always Haunt Jean-Luc Picard

Picard was famously abducted by the Borg in The Next Generation Season 3, Episode 26, "The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1." He spent six days as a member of the Collective, which referred to him as "Locutus" and intended to use him as a go-between for a presumably soon-to-be-assimilated humanity. Season 4, Episode 1, "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" depicted the infamous Battle of Wolf 359, in which the vast bulk of Starfleet engaged a single Borg cube under Locutus's directive, and was utterly destroyed. 11,000 people lost their lives, and the cube continued unopposed to Earth, where it intended to assimilate the entire population.

They were thwarted by the Enterprise-D, now under Will Riker's command, who abducted Locutus and used his link to the Collective to put the Borg to sleep. The cube imploded, and Picard was freed from Borg control, though he remembered everything he did while he was assimilated. "The Best of Both Worlds" was a watershed moment for the franchise, bringing the Borg back for a triumphant curtain call after their celebrated introduction in Season 2, Episode 16, "Q Who." Besides introducing one of the greatest villains in the entire franchise, it marked Star Trek's first real departure from stand-alone episodes and towards more complex arcs.

That came part and parcel with growth and change for the protagonists -- something that never happened in Star Trek: The Original Series . The Next Generation even punctuated the severity of Picard's assimilation with the very next episode -- Season 4, Episode 2, "Family" -- which acknowledged the extent of his trauma and devoted the bulk of its running time to exploring it. That was unprecedented for a Star Trek series, which typically just warped off to the next planet once a given crisis was resolved. Picard's psychological wounds have never truly healed, and much of his character in the ensuing years has been defined by the way he grappled with that dark legacy.

Exploring the extent of Picard's trauma began during The Next Generation's run, most notably in Season 5, Episode 23, "I, Borg" when he learned to accept another ex-Borg in spite of his hatred for the Collective. His big moment of catharsis arrived in the feature film Star Trek: First Contact , where he must first halt another Collective attack on Earth, and then stop them from traveling back in time to assimilate the Earth of the past. Even then, however, his time as Locutus haunted him, which all three seasons of Picard developed in some detail.

Deep Space Nine Confronts Picard with His Victims

How star trek: deep space nine was created.

Picard feels unconscionable guilt for his role in Wolf 359 , but the fact remains that he had been assimilated and was a helpless puppet to their will. He's a victim of the Collective as well, and there's a fair amount of survivor's guilt that factors into his trauma. All of that, however, is centered around Picard himself, and not Locutus's victims. Most of the time, that process is largely internal. "Family" aside, The Next Generation rolled merrily along after "The Best of Both Worlds" without any indication of the devastation left behind, with Starfleet in shambles and tens of thousands of its personnel dead. The slow rebuilding took place almost entirely off-screen.

Deep Space Nine changed all of that with its own central protagonist, Benjamin Sisko, whose wife was killed at Wolf 359 and who has had to raise their son Jake by himself ever since. "Emissary" opens with the battle itself, which hadn't been depicted onscreen before. For example, the Enterprise-D arrives in the aftermath during "The Best of Both Worlds." Sisko is a lieutenant commander onboard the starship Saratoga during the battle, only to see his vessel and its crew taken apart in the space of moments. He's able to rescue Jake, but his wife Jennifer is killed, and he's forced to abandon her body as the survivors flee the ship in an escape pod. All the time, Locutus's passive, indifferent face seems to loom above it all.

"Emissary" officially begins three years later, as Sisko takes command of Deep Space 9 for the first time. He's consumed by feelings of reluctance for the job, and is considering resigning Starfleet to take Jake back to Earth. Picard arrives to give him the assignment: ensure Bajor's reconstruction and application to the Federation. In the course of their conversation, it becomes clear that Sisko blames Picard for the death of his wife, and hasn't begun to forgive him for the loss. That changes during the course of the series pilot, as Sisko has his encounter with the Bajoran Prophets (who are advanced alien beings who dwell within the wormhole), and finds closure for Jennifer's death. He and Picard meet again, and Sisko rescinds his desire to return to Earth, then shakes Picard's hand before the two return to their respective posts.

Picard's Journey to Forgiveness Will Never End

How star trek's vulcans evolved beyond gene roddenberry's creation.

The two scenes speak volumes about both men, as Sisko finds new purpose in his life and learns to forgive Picard for his part in his wife's death. That serves as the launching point for Sisko's journey, ending with him joining the Prophets at the end of Deep Space Nine's run. Picard faces a darker reality: for the first time onscreen, he's properly confronted with someone who lost a loved one at Wolf 359. While he earns Sisko's forgiveness, it's a task he'll need to do over and over again, sometimes for no one's sake but his own. That pays dividends in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, when Captain Liam Shaw reveals he too is a survivor of Wolf 359. Like Sisko, he's not inclined to forgive the once and former Locutus either, and unlike Sisko, he never really reconciles with the man.

All of that is set up with Stewart's performance in "Emissary." Though brief, it establishes a strong baseline for the trauma inflicted by the Borg, as well as Picard's somewhat halting ability to confront his complicity in Wolf 359. He masks it behind duty, pushing through Sisko's obvious anger and falling back on military protocol to complete the assigned task. Stewart conveys the oceans of emotional turmoil going on beneath the surface without overtly tipping his hand. The audience can see how much Picard's guilt weighs on him without diminishing Sisko's anger or pain in the process. There's no undoing what's been done, however, and no matter what steps he takes, forgiveness and reconciliation will always be slow in coming.

The actor reveals this vulnerability in the space of a few short minutes, in a story that isn't his. Yet the way he uses that time is quietly awe-inspiring. He doesn't overshadow Sisko in these scenes, and the attention remains firmly where it should be on Deep Space Nine's lead. At the same time, he lays the groundwork for what becomes Picard's central emotional wound as a character, and the ways he can't always heal the damage no matter how hard he tries. It's a reasonably quiet moment in a long career, both within the franchise and without. But amid a bumper crop of brilliant performances from the actor, its brevity and emotional resonance may have no peer.

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine are currently streaming on Paramount+.

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.
