London debut of the acclaimed princess diana exhibition to open in may.

Princess Diana’s life and legacy is unveiled through iconic photos at the London debut of this new exhibition.

Diana - Egypt Tan Suit

The internationally acclaimed photography exhibition about the world’s most famous Princess will give visitors new insight into her incredible life. Princess Diana: Accredited Access Exhibition , will open at Dockside Vaults in St Katharine Docks, near London’s Tower Bridge, in May. It will offer visitors the opportunity to get to know Princess Diana and her story on a deeper level through a behind-the-lens journey.

For the first time in the UK, world-famous Royal Photographers Anwar Hussein and his two sons, Samir and Zak, share their remarkable photographs of Princess Diana and her family. Accredited by the Royal Family, the Husseins are the longest-standing family of Official Royal Photographers, having collectively spent more than four decades working side-by-side with the Princess and her family.

They received special access to document the lives of the Royals in public and captured more intimate, private moments. Each photo has a story that hasn’t been told before and is shared in the exhibition’s in-depth audio guide. Some of the iconic photos include Diana sitting alone outside the Taj Mahal, walking through a landmine field as part of her trip to Angola in 1997, the unforgettable revenge dress which dared to break Royal protocol and the Princess’ simple handshake with an AIDS patient that showed the world how to be human.

Samir and Zak followed their father’s footsteps into royal photography by capturing the lives of Diana’s sons Prince William and Prince Harry, and are now multi-award-winning photographers themselves.

I am honoured and humbled to have been given the opportunity to photograph Princess Diana so extensively and to have had the pleasure of having many friendly and insightful conversations with her. I am delighted that the images captured, as well as those of my sons, are coming home to London to recognise and memorialise such a remarkable woman and her sons. There are so many memories of our two families connecting and creating a special relationship, which I am pleased to be able to display in such a unique way through the exhibition.

– Anwar Hussein, official photographer for Princess Diana

The Princess of Wales Memorial plaque

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk is a seven-mile-long walk, charted by 90 plaques set in the ground, that takes you within sight of famous buildings and locations associated with the Princess during her life.

You will pass through four of the eight Royal Parks on this walk: St. James's Park, The Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

During the walk, you will see three palaces and two mansions which played a role in the life of the Princess:

  • Kensington Palace
  • Buckingham Palace
  • Clarence House
  • St James's Palace
  • Spencer House, the one-time London house of the Spencer family

The plaques are the work of sculptor Alec Peever. They have a rose emblem at the centre and are etched in aluminium, which appears like a precious metal. The rose is heraldic in design, and while symbolising the Princess's enduring image, also symbolises Britain's traditions and heritage. The plaques are immediately recognisable at any point, and clearly direct walkers along the route.

The walk is one of two memorial projects officially opened on 30 June 2000, the day before the Princess's 39th birthday; the other is the Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens. Together they celebrate the Princess's affection for the open spaces around her home in Kensington Palace, and her love of children.

Self-Guided * 7 Miles * Outdoors

This self-guided tour is a 7-mile circular walking trail in the heart of London featuring places associated with Diana, Princess of Wales . It includes stops at palaces, mansions, parks, memorials, and other landmarks related to the Princess, the royal family, and other must-see sites in London.

Ninety plaques mark the stops on the trail, created by artist Alec Peever. Each plaque contains an aluminum rose emblem, symbolizing Diana’s image and British traditions. The route was dedicated as a memorial to Princess Diana on June 30th, 2000, a day before her 39th birthday.

Diana Frances Spencer (1961-1997) was born in Norfolk, England, to an aristocratic family. At 16, after graduating from school, she met her future husband, the 29 years old Charles, Prince of Wales. Till 1981, she lived in London and worked in several low-income jobs. Then they married, and Diana entered the British Royal Family, receiving the title of the Princess of Wales. She took on many royal duties, became a patron of over 100 charities, and used her fame and love from the public to shed light on issues close to her heart, including cancer, AIDS, and homelessness.

In 1992, after 11 years of marriage and having two children, the princess and her husband divorced. That has not reduced the love she received from the public or the attention from the press, which she harnessed to raise awareness of social causes, such as the dangers of leftover landmines in Angola. Diana died in a car accident on August 31st, 1997, attempting to escape the paparazzi who followed her in the streets of Paris. She was 36 years old.

Walking The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk can be started from any stop. It passes through four out of eight of London’s Royal Parks – St. James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens, and three palaces – St. James’s, Buckingham, where the princess lived before her marriage, and Kensington, where she raised her family. The walk also includes three grand houses – Apsley, Clarence, and Spencer’s family hereditary house.

Among the must-see sites on the walk is the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens.

Other sites on the walk include Westminster Abbey, one of the world’s most famous churches and where Diana married Prince Charles, The Magazine at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by Zaha Hadid , and the Queen Victoria Memorial at the end of The Mall.

This Wonderful Peter Pan-Inspired Play Park In London Is Dedicated To Princess Diana

Nestled within London's beautiful Kensington Gardens, the Diana Memorial Playground opened in 2000 in memory of the late Princess Diana.

Georgie Mortimer

A fitting tribute to the late princess, this gorgeous playground can be found right next to her Kensington Palace home in west London’s Kensington Gardens. Lady Di famously loved the innocence of childhood, a trait she shared with none other than Peter Pan, of course. As such, the play space is inspired by the magical stories of Peter Pan , with a huge wooden pirate ship at its centre. The environment—which also features a sensory trail, teepees, various play sculptures, and even a beach surrounding the ship—is the perfect place for children to let their imaginations run wild .

Set amongst luscious greenery, the playground was designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, meaning those less abled can play together with able-bodied children. Each aspect of the space has been created with the intention to support kids’ physical, creative, social and educational development .

When is the Diana Memorial Playground open?

The Diana Memorial Playground is open all year round , opening at 10am each day. Closing times vary with the daylight, but as we head into the summer months, the park will stay open until 19:45. Last entry is 15 minutes before closing time.

May to August: 10:00 – 19:45

September and April: 10:00 – 18:45

March and early October: 10:00 – 17:45

February and late October: 10:00 – 16:45

November to January: 10:00 – 15:45

Christmas Day: CLOSED

Do you have to book to visit the Diana Memorial Playground?

The playground is free to enter and you can’t book in advance unless it’s for a large group of children . However, you are warned that the playground does get very busy and you may have to queue to enter if the play area reaches full capacity . Queues can last up to an hour during peak times (read: warm, sunny days).

How do I get to Princess Diana’s Playground?

The nearest tube station is Queensway , on the Central line, which is located just outside of Kensington Gardens and is a four minute walk away from the playground. A little further away you have Bayswater tube station (eight minute walk) or Notting Hill Gate (ten minute walk).

Parking at the Diana Memorial Playground

Parking is available for a charge at the nearby Q-Park Queensway – a secure underground car park just along from Queensway tube station. You can prebook a space here .
