KE Adventure Travel has today acquired 100% of the share capital of self-guided walking operator Mickledore Travel, from founders Rick and Sonja Cooper. Founded in 2004, Mickledore is the market leader for high quality self-guided walking holidays in the UK, with revenues of £2.68m in 2018. Like KE, the company is based in Keswick in the Lake District and has 12 employees.

mickledore travel limited

Rick and Sonja Cooper will continue to work with the Mickledore team on a consultancy basis, to ensure continued growth and development under the company’s new ownership. They will also work closely with Ashley Toft, KE’s Chief Executive Officer, who will oversee both businesses.

Mickledore becomes the third UK company in two years to join the Voyageurs du Monde group, following the acquisitions of Original Travel in January 2017 and KE Adventure Travel in July 2017. This continues the strategy for the group to grow and develop in the UK and other English speaking markets. The Voyageurs du Monde group had a global turnover of €429m (Euros) in 2017.

Ashley Toft of KE Adventure Travel says, "This is an exciting opportunity for both businesses. Mickledore’s focus on the UK as a destination fills a gap in KE’s product range, and their expertise in operating self-guided holidays comes at a perfect time as KE launches its first range of self-guided walking and cycling holidays in Europe. There are great opportunities to grow both businesses in North America, as well as an obvious opportunity for Mickledore to expand into the French market. I look forward to working with the team at Mickledore to continue the great work they have done to build such a strong business in this fast growing sector.’’

Rick Cooper commented, "We are thrilled to have found such a natural home for Mickledore and its staff. Not only are the offices a 5 minute walk apart, but the whole working culture and ethos of KE and the wider Voyageurs du Monde group, feels very similar to that of Mickledore. We welcome the many opportunities that becoming part of a larger group will give us.’’

What to Know About the I.C.C. Prosecutor’s Request for Warrants for Israeli and Hamas Leaders

The International Criminal Court prosecutor requested arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Hamas leaders. Here is a closer look at the court and the warrant.

Karim Khan, the International Criminal Court prosecutor, in his judicial robes in a courtroom.

By Emma Bubola and Charlie Savage

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Monday that he had requested arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and the leaders of Hamas. Here’s a closer look at the court and the warrants.

The prosecutor is accusing both sides of war crimes.

The court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, said in a statement that he was applying for arrest warrants for Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas because he had “reasonable grounds to believe” that they were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity, which included “the killing of hundreds of Israeli civilians” in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, and the taking of at least 245 hostages.

Mr. Khan said that the Hamas officials “planned and instigated the commission of crimes” on that day, and that they “have acknowledged their responsibility for those crimes” through their actions, such as personal visits to hostages shortly after their kidnapping.

The prosecutor cited accusations of murder, extermination, hostage-taking, and acts of sexual violence as war crimes. He also said he had reasonable grounds to believe the officials were responsible for acts of torture and cruel treatment.

Mr. Khan also said that he had requested arrest warrants for Mr. Netanyahu and Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, because there were reasonable grounds to believe that they bore responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the starvation of civilians as a weapon of war and “intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population.”

Mr. Khan said that these crimes were committed “as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population.” He also said that in his office’s view, some of the crimes “continue to this day.”

“International law and the laws of armed conflict apply to all,” he said. “No foot soldier, no commander, no civilian leader — no one — can act with impunity. Nothing can justify willfully depriving human beings, including so many women and children, the basic necessities required for life. Nothing can justify the taking of hostages or the targeting of civilians.”

The International Criminal Court was set up under a 1998 treaty, but the U.S. and Israel aren’t members.

The International Criminal Court is an international court that has jurisdiction to prosecute people for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

It was established in 2002 as a standing body to investigate those crimes under a 1998 treaty known as the Rome Statute. Previously, the United Nations Security Council had set up ad hoc tribunals to address atrocities in specific places, like the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

The I.C.C. is based in The Hague, a Dutch city that has long been a center for international law and justice. It is separate from the International Court of Justice, an international tribunal also in The Hague which is an arm of the United Nations and handles civil disputes between countries. The latter is currently weighing a claim brought by South Africa that Israel is conducting a genocide in Gaza . Israel has strongly denied the accusation.

Many democracies joined the International Criminal Court, including close American allies like Britain. The court has recognized Palestine as a member since 2015.

But neither Israel nor the United States is a member. The United States, which conducts numerous military operations abroad, has taken the position that the court should not exercise jurisdiction over citizens from countries that are not parties to the treaty.

That position, however, has been tested by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia is not a member, but Ukraine is. Last year, the court issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir V. Putin and another Russian official, saying they bore individual criminal responsibility for the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After a lengthy internal debate, President Biden ordered the U.S. government to share evidence of Russian war crimes with the court.

The arrest warrants have the immediate effect of limiting travel for targets.

Mr. Khan’s request for warrants must still be approved by judges on the court. If they are issued, the warrants would put both the Israeli officials and Hamas leaders at risk of being arrested and sent to The Hague for trial if they travel to one of the court’s 124 member nations , which include most European countries.

Presumably they would not go to countries that would arrest and extradite them, in which case they may never stand trial. But the effective travel restrictions would function as a kind of punishment in and of themselves.

“Israel will be more isolated after this action,” said Stephen Rapp, a former U.S. ambassador at large who headed the Office of Global Criminal Justice in the State Department. He said that if the arrest warrants go ahead, the named officials “will find it hard to travel to two-thirds of the world.”

The warrant request represents one of the harshest condemnations of Israel’s strategy in its war against Hamas and its campaign’s toll on Gaza’s civilian population. But Mr. Rapp said that Israel “has proved itself sort of immune to international pressure, ” and it was unclear whether the prosecutor’s actions would have an impact on its strategy in Gaza.

The I.C.C. cannot try defendants in absentia . It also has no police force, relying on member states to arrest fugitives and transfer them to The Hague.

In the case of Mr. Putin, the judges approved the request within weeks.

The prosecutor is accusing Israeli officials of intentionally targeting civilians and using starvation as a weapon.

Mr. Khan said that he believed Israeli officials were responsible for intentionally attacking civilians, but he largely focused on allegations of starvation, and extermination or murder “including in the context of deaths caused by starvation.”

For months, Israel has been criticized for the scale of civilian deaths, but Israeli officials have blamed Hamas for the toll, accusing the armed group of using civilians as a shield, its fighters deliberately hiding among and beneath noncombatants.

Under the laws of war, it can be lawful to pull the trigger knowing that some civilian bystanders are likely to be killed, so long as the harm to innocents is deemed to be necessary and proportionate to striking a legitimate military target.

Mr. Rapp, the former U.S. ambassador, said that prosecutors’ greater emphasis on accusations that Israeli officials have restricted the transfer of critical supplies of food and medicine to civilians may be because that issue is “relatively simple” compared to second-guessing targeting decisions.

“The humanitarian rules are very strict,” he said, adding that a state which conducts a military operation in an area of which it controls the perimeter must ensure that civilians have the means of survival.

“If you look at the black letter of international law in this area, it is actually very, very clear,” he said.

Israel’s foreign minister denounced the warrant applications.

Neither Mr. Netanyahu nor Mr. Gallant immediately commented on the decision.

Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, said that he had ordered the immediate establishment of a special committee aimed at fighting the decision, which he said “was intended first and foremost to tie the hands of the State of Israel and deny it the right of self-defense.”

The “scandalous” prosecutor’s decision, he said, “is a frontal attack without restraint on the victims of Oct. 7 and our 128 hostages in Gaza.”

In a statement on Telegram, Hamas condemned the warrant requests against its leaders. It said that the prosecutor should demand the arrest not only of Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant but of all “leaders, officers and soldiers who participated in crimes against the Palestinian people.”

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article said that the United States and Israel hadn’t signed the treaty that set up the International Criminal Court. They signed, but are not members.

This is the 4th walking holiday we have taken with Mickledore and they have all been fabulous. This holiday - St Cuthbert's Way from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Holy Island in Northumberland - was beautiful from start to finish. All our accommodation was excellent and included breakfast and a packed lunch. Our luggage was transported for us so that all we had to do was book an evening meal in each place and walk, and enjoy our holiday. The backup information provided by Mickledore is also first class so booking meals ahead was easy and stress-free. We will definitely be booking with Mickledore again.

MIckeldore staff were friendly and efficient. We had some dietary requirements and all our accommodation hosts were aware of these and provided accordingly. They booked accommodation where needed, and if this wasn't available they arranged transport.

Thank you for choosing us once again for your walking holiday. We are honored to have your continued trust and support, and we're thrilled to hear that your experience was enjoyable. hayley

Walked the coastal path around Isle of Wight in 7 days.

Great experience and well worth the money. Mickledore is a great company to go with. They do all the leg work, accommodation, mapping, miles to walk each day, details of where to eat in the evening. Good communication from the moment of booking to the end of the holiday.

It's fantastic to hear that you had a great time on your self-guided walking holiday. Your positive feedback is a testament to the adventurous spirit of our travelers. We appreciate your positive comments and look forward to helping you plan your next outdoor escapade! Hayley

Wonderful Adventure Walking St Cuthbert's Way

This is the second holiday we have booked through Mickledore. The planning and preparation was spot on. The walk went smoothly. We met some amazing people en-route. The walking was great. The accommodation was overall really good. Luggage pick-up went smoothly. Overall a very stress free experience. The climax was walking the Pilgrim's Route from the mainland to Lindisfarne in bare feet!

All communications are professional and timely. If you have to phone you are greeted by people living in this country. Very happy with the service we have received.

We deeply appreciate your positive feedback regarding your recent self-guided walking holiday. Your satisfaction is a testament to the quality and commitment we put into crafting memorable experiences for our guests. It was our pleasure to assist in making your journey enjoyable, and we look forward to the possibility of serving you again in the future. HAyley

Excellent organisation allowed us to think only of walking and soaking up the scenery.

We walked the west Highland Way in September 2023. The organisation and quality of accommodation was top class. We had a wonderful time. Couldn't recommend highly enough.

Mickledore arranged the accommodation and transportation of our luggage. All the information provided was detailed and invaluable. Maps and guide books were easy to follow. I believe they thought of everything.

We're delighted to hear that you had a great experience on your self-guided walking holiday. Your positive feedback inspires us to continue delivering exceptional adventures. Hayley

No fuss Adventure

We live in the US and love hiking in the UK. Mickeldore provide us with enough options to keep the two of us (one longtime hiker and one new to the game) challenged, deliriously happy and not arguing. What more could one want from a vacation?

We didn't't have a "tour operator" per se. It was just the two of us hiking from lodging to lodging, (booked by Mickeldore) using their maps and other support materials.

Thank you for your kind words about your self-guided walking holiday. Your satisfaction is our ultimate goal, and we look forward to assisting you on future journeys.

ANOTHER AMAZING WALKING HOLIDAY

We walked St Cuthberts Way from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Holy Island. A holiday that was both energetic and relaxing plus full of amazing scenery and interesting ancient buildings.

Mickledore yet again have provided us with another fantastic walking holiday. Everything worked like clockwork down to the last detail. We would highly recommend them.

We appreciate your kind words and are delighted that you had a great time on your walking holiday. Our team works hard to make each trip special, and your feedback means a lot to us. We can't wait to have you join us on another journey in the future. Hayley

Accommodation

We will always do our best to arrange your accommodation in accordance with our advertising and your booking requirements. However, in some locations the amount and type of accommodation is limited, so occasionally some of the details may have to be altered from those advertised and/or requested. We may have to substitute a twin bedded room for a double room, or move one or more of the overnight stops a few kilometres along the route. This is more likely at busy times, or if the holiday is booked at short notice.  We reserve our right to make such alterations and a variation in the location of overnight stops of up to 5 km is an acceptable modification which will not be considered a major change to your contract and will not entitle you to cancel the holiday or receive a refund.

Unless you inform us otherwise at the time of booking we will assume that twin beds are an acceptable alternative to a double, we will check with you before booking a double instead of twins, and before moving an overnight stop by over 5 km. If these changes are not acceptable, you will receive a full refund.

Occasionally it is not possible to book en suite accommodation for every overnight stop – again this is more likely during peak season or where the booking is made close to the time of departure. Unless you inform us otherwise by stating in your booking form at the time of booking. Where no en suite accommodation can be booked at a particular location; we will book standard accommodation instead. If more than 30%, or 2 nights, whichever is the greater, of the accommodation is not en suite, we will give you the option of cancelling the holiday and receiving a full refund.

In most cases we can arrange off street parking at the beginning or end of your route, usually at the accommodation at which you are booked. There is often a modest charge, which you will pay directly to the Proprietor. Parking is at your own risk and Mickledore Travel accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage to any contents or customers cars wherever they may be parked during the course of a holiday.

Luggage Transport

Where luggage transport is booked, we will arrange transport for 1 piece of luggage per person up to a maximum of 20 Kg per bag, unless we advise you otherwise. Overweight bags will incur extra charges which will have to be met by you. Extra bags will incur extra charges.

Where we have booked taxi or minibus transfers for you or members of your party, you will be liable for the fare if you cancel within 48 hours of departure.

Cancellation or Alteration by Mickledore Travel

We reserve the right to modify or cancel any holiday, or arrangement at any time up to eight weeks before departure. In the event of cancellation you will receive a full refund, unless we can offer an alternative that you are happy with. Where we have materially modified the holiday in a way not covered in the accommodation section above, you are entitled to a full refund if the modifications are not acceptable to you. We will not materially modify or cancel the holiday within eight weeks of the date of departure unless compelled to do so because of circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

If you receive a refund of all monies paid to Mickledore Travel due to cancellation or material modification by us, you will not be entitled to any further sum by way of compensation damages or otherwise arising from the cancellation or modification.

We are also Members of ABTA, our membership number is Y5967. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. We can also offer you an arbitration scheme for the resolution of disputes arising out of, or in connection with this contract. The arbitration scheme is arranged by ABTA and administered independently by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR). It provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on you in respect of costs. The scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The scheme can however deal with compensation claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,500 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. Your request for arbitration must be received by ABTA within eighteen months of the date of return from holiday. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if we agree, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement. For injury and illness claims, you can request the ABTA Mediation Procedure and we have the option to agree to mediation. Further information can be found on www.abta.com .
