Market Watch recently released its list of the five best summer road trip destinations for 2023. No matter where you live, where you’re going, or what type of trip you want to take, you’re sure to find that one (or more) of these trips matches your wants and needs.

Let’s take a closer look at the list!

California: Pacific Coast Highway

Pacific Coast Highway California

Whether you begin in Dana Point or Leggett, a journey along California’s State Route 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), is a rewarding experience. The PCH unveils over 650 miles of breathtaking coastal landscapes and no shortage of attractions.

Route 1 traverses iconic locales like San Francisco , Santa Barbara, and Big Sur as America’s second-longest state highway.

For example, in Santa Barbara, a visit to Stearns Wharf, the oldest active wharf in the state, is a must. It hosts an array of unique shops, seafood eateries, and the engaging Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center.

As your journey culminates in Humboldt County, take in the redwood forest, famously known as the Avenue of the Giants.

Florida Keys: Miami to Key West

7 mile bridge florida

Embarking on a summer road trip from Miami through the Florida Keys offers an unforgettable experience. As you navigate the Overseas Highway, you can take in hundreds of miles of awe-inspiring scenery.

Despite the route’s short four-hour duration, you should still allocate several days to fully immerse yourself in the numerous pit stops.

Planning your journey in early summer ensures manageable humidity levels and attractive deals on accommodations and activities. For fishing enthusiasts, Key West provides experienced charter guides at affordable prices, offering a chance to catch snapper, grouper, tuna, and more.

Maine: Portland to Quebec City

Quebec City

Venturing north from Portland, Maine, to Quebec City, Canada, offers a unique blend of cultural enrichment and adventure. Highlights in Maine include the acclaimed Children’s Museum and Theatre and the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, renowned for its American and contemporary art collections.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, West Forks offers white water rafting tours and camping sites. A 40-minute drive later, you enter Quebec, Canada’s vibrant French-speaking province.

Upon reaching Quebec City , you’ll find plenty of historical sites alongside summer festivities.

Note: Music enthusiasts will enjoy the Festival d’ete de Quebec, a July event showcasing prominent artists.

Nevada: Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada

Nevada is home to Lake Tahoe, known as the “Jewel of the Sierra Nevada.” En route to this natural wonder, consider visiting Reno and Virginia City. Here, you can enjoy rodeos, art exhibitions, and hiking trails — and that’s just the start.

Upon reaching Lake Tahoe, you can engage in various water activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, or a lake cruise. The region has hiking and biking paths and numerous campgrounds, making it an ideal RV road trip destination.

Washington State: Olympic Peninsula Loop

Hoh Rainforest Olympic Peninsula NP

From a large selection of wineries to urban adventures near Seattle, Washington State offers both locals and tourists a broad spectrum of experiences. The Olympic Peninsula is a highlight of the region, encircling the famous Olympic National Park.

As you journey along the U.S. 101 loop encircling the park, you’ll be greeted by an array of picturesque landscapes, winding past the charming locales of Port Townsend and Sequim, known for their aromatic lavender fields in summer.

And, of course, you want to take advantage of an opportunity to explore the Hoh rainforest, one of Earth’s most extensive temperate rainforest ecosystems. It offers year-round camping facilities, is situated less than an hour from Forks, and is easily reachable via Route 101.

Smart Road Trip Tips

friends on a road trip

As you can tell from the list above, road trips can be an exciting way to experience everything the country offers. However, a successful road trip requires careful planning and consideration.

1. Experience Local Culture : Instead of just focusing on the end point of your journey, relish the beauty of the small towns you pass by. Every place has unique characteristics expressed through customs, traditions, and food. Explore local bazaars, engage in community activities, or converse with the people you meet. Such interactions often leave a lasting impression on your journey.

2. Mindful Music Selection : Music plays a crucial role in setting the mood during a road trip. Consider creating a collaborative playlist that everyone enjoys. Don’t forget to download your playlist for those out-of-service areas. Music can turn long drives into a sing-along adventure and make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

3. Remain Flexible : While having a schedule is essential, don’t let it constrain you. Welcome the unexpected and make room for spontaneous choices. You might come across a captivating wildlife park or a local celebration that’s too good to miss. Being adaptable can unlock unexpected adventures.

4. Prepare for Everything : Before embarking on your journey, ensure your vehicle is ready for the trip ahead. Carry emergency supplies like a first-aid kit, essential tools, a backup tire, and important contact numbers. It’s also a good idea to know the basics of car maintenance.

5. Embrace a Digital Break : Try to keep your smartphone usage to a minimum. While taking photos is fine, remember to be present and truly experience your surroundings. A brief digital detox will allow you to immerse yourself in the experience and create memories that will last a lifetime.

With mountains, waterfalls, and towering skyscrapers, New York is an easy state to explore via road trip. New York may not be as large as California or Texas, but the density of attractions means that most summer road trip travelers separate the state into regions.

Some routes, like the Western New York road trip , highlight the natural beauty of Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario, and Letchworth State Park and are particularly beautiful in summer when the water levels are up, and the foliage is deep green.

Other scenic road trips in New York include drives through the Catskills Mountains, along the Finger Lakes, and up the Shawangunk Mountains. In between these beautiful vistas, road trippers can make stops in major cities like Rochester, New York City, and Woodbury.

With 840 miles of coastline, nine national parks, and some of the biggest cities in the country, California is one of the top destinations for travel in the country.

Those planning a road trip in California can either stick to a single scenic route, like the famous Pacific Coast Highway 1 or create their own path by connecting some of California's most famous attractions.

Popular road trips through California include a Southern California adventure through Joshua Tree National Park, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Death Valley. Other travelers favor a more mountainous adventure, visiting Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park in one go.

Utah is a unique state with two distinctive halves. Summer road trip travelers flock to southern Utah to go National Park hopping through the state's "Mighty 5", a red rock paradise full of alien geological formations and one-of-a-kind hiking trails.

There are far more possible stops on a Utah road trip, however. Travelers can drive a north-south route, loosely following I-15. Along the way, they can explore Bear Lake along the Idaho border, the picturesque summer destination of Park City , and a wide variety of family-oriented attractions, like the three separate AZA-accredited venues (Tracy Aviary, Hogle Zoo, and Loveland Living Planet Aquarium), and the five-museum Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.

In between tastings, make time for detours to natural attractions, like the Grand Canyon, and quirky roadside curiosities, like Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. Just remember to drink responsibly—this is a road trip after all.

The Best Minnesota Summer Road Trips [from Minneapolis] in 2023

Summer may be shorter in Minnesota than in most places, but that makes it all of the sweeter. And there are so many Minnesota summer road trips to take! Whether you want fun in a city, a small-town vibe, or completely off the grid, we’re talking about some of the best experiences in the entire United States. Put a few of these great places on your summer calendar.

minnesota summer road trips

The Best Minnesota Summer Road Trips

We’ll start close to Minneapolis and make our way out to all areas of the state. And it begins with a bang…

Stillwater, Minnesota

Easily one of the top Minnesota summer road trips and it’s less than an hour drive! This charming town on the St. Croix River is full of things to do! Rent bikes and hit the trails (Loop Trail will bring you across the lift bridge), grab the best Bloody Mary in the Twin Cities at No Neck Tony’s , and stop in a gift shop and a few boutiques.

Stillwater combines both outdoor adventures with amazing bars and restaurants —which means you can’t go wrong! Read The Best Things to Do in Stillwater Minnesota: Weekend Getaway for my top recommendations.

Taylors Falls, Minnesota

I love this small town (also on the St. Croix River) so much. North of the cities, it is a perfect Minnesota summer road trip that can be done in one day. Interstate State Park has multiple trails to adventure on and is the centerpiece of your day trip. There are great hiking trails along the river bluffs, glacial potholes to explore, and plenty of scenic views!

And don’t miss post-hike lunch at Jueberry Cafe plus ice cream (think root beer floats and malts) from The Drive-In —an old-school spot where you order/eat in your car.

Read more on all of the best things to do in Taylors Falls — including a water park if you’re with kids.

Red Wing, Minnesota

Making our way to southern Minnesota, you will find the cute town of Red Wing, a great place to spend a summer day. Make sure you start with Hanisch Bakery for some of the best donuts in the state. Follow that up with a hike at Barn Bluff; a short 2-mile stretch will bring you to river views and great photos.

You can also explore the downtown area (don’t miss the world’s largest boot at Red Wing Shoes!) and make a stop at Red Wing Brewery for pizza and beer! Plan your trip to Red Wing, Minnesota with my guide which also includes a few fun stops in Wisconsin just across the river.

Northfield, Minnesota

One of the most underrated cities in all of Minnesota! Northfield is the perfect place for a calm yet enjoyable experience in a town full of local history. Located south of Minneapolis, Northfield has plenty of bars—a few with outdoor patios (I love Froggy’s), and a cute downtown full of shops ( Northfield Olive Oil & Vinegars is my favorite!)

For how to have the best time, read more details on what to do in Northfield .

Make Sure to Visit Red Barn Farm

A local pizza farm serving up fresh, wood-fired pizza full of organic ingredients. Bring your own blanket and booze (a bottle of wine is perfect, don’t forget an opener!) and enjoy the scenery. It’s the perfect stop for a Minnesota summer road trip. Make sure to check the Red Barn Farm website for days and hours.

St. Cloud, Minnesota

St. Cloud is an energetic college town with a fun vibe. They love the outdoors, sports, arts, culture, and history—there is literally something for everyone! Visit St. Cloud in the summertime and you can pack your day with views of the Mississippi River, Munsinger Gardens, Quarry Park (one of the best places to hike!), and, of course, delicious places to grab a beer and some food.

Read The Best Things to Do in St. Cloud —I truly LOVED my trip here and it exceeded expectations!

Summer Driving Tips

Summer changes, vehicle checks, before you go, protect yourself and loved ones, year-round safety.

Summertime usually means vacations and summer road trips. Now is a good time to review these summer driving safety tips. A little planning and some safety checks might spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown — or worse, a highway crash.

Air Conditioning

As the temperature rises, your A/C works harder to keep your vehicle cool. Check A/C performance before traveling; don’t forget to check your cabin air filter, too. A lack of air conditioning on a hot summer day affects everyone and is particularly dangerous for people in poor health or who are sensitive to heat, such as children and older adults.

The summertime months are especially deadly for children when it comes to hot car deaths. Heatstroke in vehicles happens when a child is left unattended in a parked vehicle or manages to get into an unattended vehicle. Never leave children alone in the car — not even for a minute. A child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult. Even if the outside temperature is as low as 60 degrees and the windows are cracked, the temperature inside a vehicle can rapidly reach deadly levels.

Visit NHTSA.gov/Heatstroke to learn more tips and reminders to prevent heatstroke.

Belts and Hoses

High summer temperatures accelerate the rate at which rubber belts and hoses degrade. Look under the hood and inspect all belts and hoses to make sure there are no signs of bulges, blisters, cracks, or cuts in the rubber. It’s best to replace them now if they show signs of obvious wear. Also, make sure all hose connections are secure.

Check for Recalls

NHTSA's Recalls Look-up Tool lets you enter your license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN) to quickly learn if your vehicle has a critical safety issue, and, if so, steps for free repairs. You can also download NHTSA’s SaferCar app and enter your vehicle and equipment information. If a recall is issued, you’ll get an alert on your phone.

Make sure each tire is filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure, which is listed in your owner’s manual and on a placard located on the driver’s door pillar or door frame; and don’t forget to check your spare if your vehicle is equipped with one. To get an accurate reading, check pressure when tires are cold, meaning they haven’t been driven on for at least three hours. Do not inflate your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself — that number is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, not the recommended pressure for your vehicle. A tire doesn’t have to be punctured to lose air; all tires naturally lose some air over time. In fact, underinflation is the leading cause of tire failure. Some other tips:

  • Inspect your tires at least once a month and before long road trips.
  • Look closely at your tread and replace tires that have uneven wear or insufficient tread.
  • Tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch or greater on all tires. Look for the built-in wear bar indicators or use the penny test to determine when it’s time to replace your tires. Place a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your vehicle needs new tires.
  • If you find uneven wear across the tires’ tread, it means your tires need rotation and/or your wheels need to be aligned before you travel.
  • Check each tire’s age. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing tires every six years regardless of use.
  • Since electric vehicles are typically heavier than gas-powered vehicles, they require EV-specific tires to bear the weight, maximize performance and electric range, all while minimizing tire noise. Whether the vehicle is gas-powered, electric-powered, or a hybrid, all tires require similar maintenance. Low-rolling-resistance tires for conventional vehicles could also have lower tread life.

An inspection is not just about checking tire pressure and age. Remember to check:

  • for any damage or conditions that may need attention;
  • the tread and sidewalls for any cuts, punctures, bulges, scrapes, cracks, or bumps. The tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch or greater on all tires; and
  • your spare tire and car jack kit.

If you find tire damage, take your vehicle to a tire professional.

Cooling System

Make sure you have enough coolant inside your vehicle, and that the coolant meets the manufacturer’s specifications. Check your vehicle owner’s manual for specific recommendations. You or a mechanic should check the cooling system for leaks, test the coolant, and drain or replace old coolant as needed.

Fluid Level

If you drive a conventional vehicle or a hybrid, be sure to check your vehicle’s oil level periodically. If it’s around the time to have the oil changed, now would be a good time to do it. Also check fluid levels in the following:

  • automatic transmission or clutch
  • power steering (if hydraulic)
  • windshield washer

Make sure each reservoir is full; if you see any signs of fluid leakage, take your vehicle in to be serviced. Remember, if you drive an electric vehicle, be sure to check applicable fluid levels, too!

lights icon

Have a mechanic check your battery and charging system, and make any necessary repairs or replacements. For hybrid-electric vehicles, keep gasoline in the tank to support the gasoline engine.

Visit NHTSA’s Hybrid and Electric Vehicle guide for more information on high-voltage batteries.

Check your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and interior lights. Be sure to also check your trailer brake lights and turn signals, if necessary.

Wiper Blades

After the heavy toll imposed by winter storms and spring rains, windshield wiper blades may need to be replaced. Like rubber belts and hoses, wiper blades are vulnerable to the summer heat. Examine your blades for signs of wear and tear on both sides. The blades can also deform and fail to work properly in both directions. If they aren’t in top condition, invest in new ones before you go.

Improperly installed floor mats in your vehicle may interfere with the operation of the accelerator or brake pedal, increasing the risk of a crash. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for mat installation and use retention clips to secure the mat. Always use mats that are the correct size and fit for your vehicle.
