What is the Hokkaido Rail Pass?

Hokkaido Rail Pass

The Hokkaido Rail Pass is a discount pass for train travel in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. It is designed for foreign tourists and offers unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including limited express and local trains, for a set number of days.

With the Hokkaido Rail Pass, travelers can easily explore the island and visit popular destinations like Sapporo, Hakodate, and Asahikawa or even head into the wonderful wilderness of Eastern Hokkaido.

The Hokkaido Rail Pass can be purchased outside of Japan or through JR East online within Japan at a higher price. It is a great way to save money on transportation during your trip to Hokkaido.

Types of Hokkaido Rail Passes

Hokkaido Rail Pass

The Hokkaido Rail Pass is available in two types: the 5-day pass and the 7-day pass. The 5-day pass is valid for 5 consecutive days, while the 7-day pass is valid for 7 consecutive days. Both passes are designed for unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including limited express and local trains, and include some bus routes and the JR ferry to and from Aomori.

Hokkaido Rail Pass Prices

The prices for the Hokkaido Rail Passes are as follows:

When Purchasing Outside Japan:

  • 5-day pass: Adult 1,9000 yen / Child 9,500 yen
  • 7-day pass: Adult 25,000 yen / Child 11,000 yen

When Purchasing Inside Japan from the JR-EAST Train Reservation website

  • 7-day pass: Adult 26,000 yen / Child 13,000 yen

How to Purchase the Hokkaido Rail Pass

In the past, the Hokkaido Rail Pass could only be purchased outside of Japan. But recently it has become available inside Japan which is why you might read some conflicting information online.

It is now available in Japan from JR East online at a higher price.

You can purchase it through authorized sales agents, such as travel agencies or online resellers. It is important to note that you must obtain an exchange order before you arrive in Japan, and then exchange it for the actual pass at a JR Hokkaido station once you arrive. The exchange order is valid for three months from the date of issue, so it is important to plan accordingly.

Price and type:

Using the hokkaido rail pass.

JR Hokkaido Rail Pass

Once you have exchanged your exchange order for the actual pass, you can start using it on any JR Hokkaido train.

In the past, you would show your pass to the station attendant when entering and exiting the station, and you were allowed to pass through the gates. However, now you will receive a standard-size ticket that you can put into the gate the same as a standard ticket.

Insert the correct ticket:

Note: When making a reservation you will receive an additional ticket. Don’t put this into the gate. You only need to insert your JR Hokkaido rail pass ticket. There reserved seat ticket is to show to the conductor upon request.

This can be a bit confusing at first because they both look similar. I like to put each in separate parts of my wallet so I can easily whip the right one out when needed.

JR Hokkaido Raill Pass and Seat Reservation Tickets

Tip: And one more thing. Don’t forget to take your pass when you exit the gate!

How To Reserve Seats

Hokkaido Rail Pass

For most shorter trips, you won’t need to reserve seats. For example, on my last trip, I reserved 3 out of the many trips I took.

But for longer trips, such as up to Asahikawa or Wakkanai or between Hakodate and Sapporo it’s better to reserve.

If you plan to use a reserved seat, it’s important to obtain your reserved seat tickets before boarding. Please note that seats cannot be reserved onboard the train. If you need to change your train after receiving a reserved seat ticket, you can do so at the ticket counter.

So if you don’t have a reserved seat make sure to sit in the non-reserved carriage (They are clearly marked).

There are two ways to reserve seats:

The first is to make an online reservation via the JR-EAST Train Reservation system. However, please note that some trains, such as local trains, sightseeing trains, and temporary trains, cannot be reserved online.

The second option is to apply for reserved seats at a station. You can do this at the JR Information Desk, the Green JR Ticket Counter (Midori-no-madoguchi), or by using the reserved seat ticket vending machine in major JR Hokkaido stations.

For more information on how to use the vending machine, please refer to this guide.

Hokkaido Rail Pass Reserving Tickets

Benefits of the Hokkaido Rail Pass

The Hokkaido Rail Pass offers a number of benefits for travelers. Some of the benefits include:

  • Unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains, including limited express and local trains
  • Train fares are expensive in Hokkaido so you can save big if you travel a lot
  • Access to special amenities and services, such as reserved seating and green cars on certain trains
  • Save time by not needing to purchase tickets for each individual trip
  • Significant cost savings compared to purchasing individual tickets for each journey

Is The Hokkaido Rail Pass Worth It?

JR Hokkaido Rail Pass

In many cases Yes, the Hokkaido Rail Pass is worth it and can be great value if you plan to travel extensively in Hokkaido.

For example, a one-way trip from Sapporo to Hakodate on a limited express train costs around 10,000 yen, which is almost the same as the cost of a 3-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. If you plan to visit multiple destinations in Hokkaido, the cost of individual train tickets can quickly add up, making the Hokkaido Rail Pass a cost-effective option.

The pass also eliminates the need to purchase individual train tickets for each trip, saving you time and hassle.

Overall, the Hokkaido Rail Pass is a great option for travelers who plan to explore multiple areas in Hokkaido and want to save money on transportation. However, if you only plan to visit a few destinations in Hokkaido, it may be more cost-effective to purchase individual train tickets.

However, if you are staying mostly in Sapporo and Otaru the pass may not be worth it or one of Hokkaido’s other passes may offer better value.

Hokkaido train route map

Sapporo is the biggest city in Hokkaido. If you fly in Hokkaido, you will arrive in New Chitose airport . It is 40 minutes away from Sapporo by the rapid train.

If you access to Hokkaido by train, you will take Hokkaido Shinkansen to get Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto . It is 20 minutes away from Hakodate by the rapid train.

There are airports in many cities, such as Hakodate, Kushiro, Memanbetsu (Abashiri/Kitami). You can fly in these cities directly from Haneda (Tokyo) by the domestic flight.

The local train runs on all lines in the map above. But Hokkaido is quite large. Please try to take the limited express trains as much as you can to save your trip time. I will explain the lines by the segment.

You can find the timetable of the major trains in Hokkaido in the link below.

Due to COVID-19, it may be operated on a schedule different from the normal timetable. Check the train schedule on Hyperdia . Hyperdia perfect guide, train timetable and route search engine

Sapporo – Hakodate route

Night view form Mt.Hakodate ©Hokkaido Tourism Organization/© JNTO

There are two routes:

  • Sapporo – Noboribetsu – Toya – Hakodate (south route)
  • Sapporo – Otaru – Kutchan – Oshamambe – Hakodate (north route)

The primary route is the south one. The Limited Express Super Hokuto runs on this segment. In this chapter, I will explain about the south route. I will explain about north route later in this post.

hokkaido train tour

It runs by way of Minami-Chitose, Tomakomai, Noboribetsu, Higashi-Muroran, Toya, Oshamambe, Onuma-Koen and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.

On this route, there are lots of the gateway stations to the popular tourist spots and important transfer point.

This is one station away from New Chitose Airport station. If you travel from Sapporo to New Chitose Airport, there are lots of the rapid train running. Minami-Chitose station is just one of the stations on the route. But if you travel to New Chitose Airport from Hakodate, Noboribetsu, Toya, Muroran, Minami-Chitose station is the transfer point to New Chitose station.

This station is also transfer point to Tomamu, Obihiro and Kushiro too.

This is the gateway to Noboribetsu Onsen. It is 10 minutes away from Noboribetsu station by the local bus.

Lake Toya is 20 minute away from this station by the local bus.

Noboribetsu Onsen and Lake Toya are connected by the express bus too. If you take a train, you have to change train and local bus twice. The express bus is more convenient. Please see my trip report in the post below. I took this express bus in this trip from Noboribetsu Onsen to Lake Toya.

hokkaido train tour

This is the transfer point to Niseko and Kutchan. This is the north route between Sapporo and Hakodate. I will explain about this route later in this post.

Onuma-Koen station is the gateway to very popular tourist spot, Onuma Quasi National Park. This station is just located in the park and it is very very accessible. You can start walking from the station.

Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto is transfer point to the Hokkaido Shinkansen. You may find the detailed information in the post below:

hokkaido train tour

This is the busiest segment in Hokkaido. There are lots of the local and rapid trains running on this segment. If you travel on this segment, you may not have to check the timetable. Train runs every 10 to 15 minutes. Rapid Airport runs on this segment every 15 minutes between Sapporo and New Chitose Airport, and every 30 minutes between Otaru and New Chitose Airport. This is the fastest way to move between these cities.

hokkaido train tour

Otaru – Oshamambe route

hokkaido train tour

This segment was the part of primary line between Sapporo and Hakodate. Now only local train runs on this segment. There is no scheduled express train running. The train does not run very frequently. You must check the timetable before you visit this region. You can find the timetable on my PDF timetable:

Due to COVID-19, it may be operated on a schedule different from the normal timetable. Check the train schedule on Hyperdia. Hyperdia perfect guide, train timetable and route search engine

If you travel to Niseko, Kutchan station is the gateway.

There is no scheduled direct train from either Hakodate and Sapporo. And as I mentioned, the train does not run very frequently.

In summer peak season, the seasonal express train ran in the last few season. But the operation dates were very limited. Do not expect to take the express train on this segment.

If you travel from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport, you have to change trains at Otaru. If you travel from Hakodate or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, you have to change trains at Oshamambe. I traveled on this route. Please see my trip report:

hokkaido train tour

Sapporo and Asahikawa are two major cities in Hokkaido. The limited express trains run on this segment very very frequently. Especially the limited express Kamui and Lilac depart at the both end, Sapporo and Asahikawa every hour on the hour daytime.

hokkaido train tour

Access to Furano / Biei

hokkaido train tour

Furano is located in the middle of Hokkaido. You can access from Sapporo via Takikawa, Asahikawa and Shintoku.

In summer season, the limited express Furano Lavender Express takes you to Furano directly.

hokkaido train tour

But if you cannot take Furano Lavender Express, you have to change trains at Takikawa station . Takikawa station is located in the middle of Sapporo and Asahikawa.

hokkaido train tour

You can take the limited express Kamui or Lilac between Sapporo and Takikawa. However you have to take a local train between Takikawa and Furano. The local train does not run frequently. Please use hyperdia to find the timetable:

hokkaido train tour

Furano line connects Furano and Asahikawa. Biei, Bibaushi and Lavender Farm are located on this line.

Any express trains do not run on this line. But the local train runs much more frequently than Takikawa – Furano route. Even if you leave from Sapporo, this route is sometimes faster than Takikawa – Furano route. And in summer season, Furano Norokko train runs on this line. This is very popular and it is sometimes hard to find the seat.

hokkaido train tour

If you get Furano and/or Biei from Obihiro or Kushiro, Shintoku is the transfer point. However the train line between Shintoku and Furano is closed partially because the track was damaged by the rain storm a few years ago. Since then, the substitute bus service will take over the train service.

This segment may be closed permanently because of the low demand. JR Hokkaido and the local municipal governments have been discussing for the years to find the best solution In my opinion, the bus service will take over the train service near future.

At this point, the substitute bus is covered by the train pass, such as JR Pass , Hokkaido Rail Pass . But if the train line is closed and the local bus takes over it, the bus service will not be covered by any rail passes.

Sapporo – Kushiro route

hokkaido train tour

This is the primary route to get southern east part of Hokkaido. The Limited Express Super Tokachi and the Limited Express Super Ozora run on this segment. These trains run every one hour between Sapporo and Obihiro. And Super Ozora runs every two hours between Sapporo and Kushiro.

hokkaido train tour

Tomamu is located between Minami-Chitose and Shintoku. You can access from either side.

If you access to Tomamu from Furano, you have to take a substitute bus because this segment is closed as I mentioned above.

If you access to Tomamu from Asahikawa, the easiest route seems to be Asahikawa – Furano – Shintoku – Tomamu route. However in most cases, the easiest and the fastest route is Asahikawa – Sapporo – Minami-Chitose – Tomamu. The distance of this route is longer but the train runs faster and much more frequently.

Shintoku is the transfer point of the train to Furano. But as I mentioned above, the train operation is suspended between Shintoku and Higashi-Shikagoe. You have to take the substitute bus service between Shintoku and Higashi-Shikagoe.

This substitute bus operation will be the scheduled bus service in next few years. Because the demand of this segment between Furano and Shintoku is very low. JR Hokkaido want to close this line and this matter is in discussion with the municipalities in this region.

Kushiro is the biggest city in southeast region of Hokkaido. This station is the transfer point of train line to Abashiri and Nemuro. Kushiro is also known as the gateway to Kushiro Marsh and Lake Akan.

Kushiro is very attractive for foodies. Kushiro has the wide variety of fresh seafood and Zangi (deep fried chicken). There are lots of accommodation. You may stay in this city and make a trip to outside city.

Asahikawa – Abashiri route

This is the primary route to get eastern Hokkaido. Especially in winter time, Abashiri is very popular to see the drift ice. Abashiri is also close to Shiretoko peninsula. You will take this route on the way to Shiretoko.

The Limited Express Taisetsu connects Asahikawa and Abashiri directly. And also the Limited Express Okhotsk runs between Sapporo and Asahikawa directly. You can get Abashiri from Sapporo without changing trains at Asahikawa.

hokkaido train tour

Kamikawa is about 40 minutes away from Asahikawa by the limited express trains. This station is the gateway to Daisetsu mountains and Sounkyo gorge. The local bus departs from Kamikawa station. You may also take the bus from Asahikawa. But if you use JR Pass or Hokkaido Rail Pass, you may take the bus from Kamikawa to save your travel cost.

Abashiri is the transfer point to Senmo line. Senmo line connects Abashiri and Kushiro. Please see the chapter of Abashiri – Kushiro route below to find more information.

Abashiri – Kushiro route

hokkaido train tour

This route is called “Senmo line”. This is one of most scenic train lines in Japan. Because it runs along the coastline near Abashiri. And this line goes through Kushiro Marsh near Kushiro.

Kushiro Shitsugen Norokko Train takes you to Kushiro Marsh from Kushiro in summer time.

hokkaido train tour

In winter time, Ryuhyo Monogatari Train runs for the drift ice watching. And SL Fuyu no Shitsugen Train runs between Kushiro and Shibecha to see the winter scenery of Kushiro Marsh.

This is the gateway to Utoro in Shiretoko peninsula. The scheduled bus and sightseeing bus depart from this station for Utoro.

This is the nearest station to Lake Kussharo. The scheduled bus runs between this station and Lake Kussharo.

This is the gateway to Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. Lake Mashu is known as the second clearest lake in the world.

This station is located near Lake toro in Kushiro Marsh.

This station is located in the middle of Kushiro Marsh. The train runs in Kushiro Marsh. But you cannot see the wide view of Kushiro Marsh from the train. There is the viewpoint near Kushiro-Shitsugen station. I highly recommend you to drop by this station to see Kushiro Marsh.

Asahikawa – Wakkanai route

hokkaido train tour

This is the train route to the northernmost of Japan. The Limited Express Sarobetsu runs between Asahikawa and Wakkanai. And the Limited Express Soya departs from Sapporo for Wakkanai. You can get Wakkanai directly from Sapporo without changing the trains at Asahikawa.

hokkaido train tour

This is the northernmost station in all stations of Japan. This city is also departure port of the ferry to Rishiri island and Rebun island.

This is the train route to the easternmost place of Japan’s mainlands. Only local train runs on this line. And the local train does not run very frequently. Please check the timetable before you go.

Hi.. we will land at New Chitose Airport on 24th March 2020 and have booked our hotel at Otaru, Sapporo and Tomakomai.(30-31st March). We hope to go Nobobiretsu on 30th as we depart from Tomakomai on 31st March to the airport. Can we use the seihun 18 pass for these trips? Thank you F Abdul

' src=

Hi F Abdul,

Probably yes. Because the sales period in 2020 has not been announced yet. But usually it is sold in March and it can be used until April 10th,

Takeshi / JPRail.com

' src=

Hi Takeshi,

Me and my friends will be travelling to Hokkaido from 4/29~5/6 next year, and would like to purchase JR Hokkaido Pass for 5 days. We want to visit several regions: Sapporo, Hakodate, Otaru, Furano and Biei. Would you please recommend the best route for us if we want to visit those regions by train? Thank you.

Regards, Ivana

You have to divide three trips from Sapporo. 1. round trip to Hakodate 2. round trip to Otaru 3. round trip to Furano/Biei.

All three places are completely different direction. So you have to go back to Sapporo after these trips anyway. You can get Otaru as a day trip from Sapporo. But I recommend you to stay in Hakodate and Furano (or Biei). These places are too far to visit as day trip from Sapporo.

You will travel in super busy period which is called “Golden Week”. Please expect that the trains will be very busy.

Please share your thoughts on the intended itinerary I’ve created.

You helped me the first time I visited Japan in 2017 with the Kansai Pass, so your thoughts and input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Yes. You can use JR East South Hokkaido Rail Pass. You can use it for these following trips: Sapporo to Noboribetsu Toya to Hakodate Hakodate to Tokyo Tokyo to Katsuta round trip (the nearest JR station to Hitachi Seaside Park) Tokyo to Yokohama/Nikko Tokyo to Narita

Your trip plan looks good and no problem to make it.

Thanks for your feedback again Takeshi!

It’s greatly appreciated!

No worries, Karen.

Thank you for your informative posts. “If you access to Hokkaido by train, you will take Hokkaido Shinkansen to get Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. It is 30 minutes away from Hakodate by the rapid train.” Shouldn’t that be 20 minutes?

Hi Fenneke,

You are right. Thank you for correcting it.

' src=

Although I understand the economic reasons, I still find it sad that little by little, segments such as the last leg to Samani is discontinued. Hokkaido is a wonderful place, akin to another world, I love it. Thank you, Takeshi, this is a clear and comprehensive guide with magnificent pictures included. Harold Owen Evans, Georgia, USA

Thank you for your comment. Hokkaido had many more train lines before. I noticed that those lines would be closed near future but I could not take many lines. I should have visited there.

Many other lines will be closed near future. As you mentioned, Hidaka line to Samani, to Shin-Totsugawa. And when Hokkaido Shinkansen will open to Sapporo, Oshamambe – Otaru segment will be closed too.

Taking the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sapporo

January 8, 2019

Hokkaido Shinkansen, Hayabusa train

Japan is a wondrous, exotic land, full of iconic places, pop-culture galore, and a perfect marriage between the old and the new.

Among one of Japan’s most iconic symbols is the Shinkansen bullet train, an incredible piece of engineering and technology that links major cities in Japan in just a few hours. Throughout the years, Japan has been expanding and improving its railway system to cover the majority of each island and facilitate traveling all together.

That is why in March of 2016, the Hokkaido Shinkansen, linking Aomori on Japan’s main island of Honshu with Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido via the Seikan Tunnel, was inaugurated. Until then, access to Hokkaido was challenging, but now with only one transfer, you can get there faster. The Hokkaido Shinkansen will be extended to Sapporo, and it is scheduled to open by 2030.

Japan Rail Pass covers the new Hokkaido Shinkansen route , including the super fast Hayabusa train.   The JR Pass is really worth it if you are taking this route :  as a normal ticket would cost 23,120 yen for the round-trip.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen Line

Currently, two trains are operating on the Hokkaido line: Hayabusa and Hayate. The majority Hokkaido Shinkansen trains are Hayabusa , which run between Tokyo Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, and seat reservation is required.

The journey from Tokyo to Hakodate takes approximately 4 hours and 4 minutes. The Shinkansen Hayabusa goes all the way to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, located between Hakodate and Hokuto. Once you arrive, you will need to take the local Hakodate Liner to reach the city of Hakodate .

Hayate trains usually operate one return service per day during the morning and late evening between Morioka and Shin Hakodate and one return service per day between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate. Again, it is mandatory to book your seat before boarding the Hayate train, since there are no non-reserved cars . If all reserved seats have already been booked, standing tickets will be made available.

The new shinkansen stations also include Oku-Tsugaru-Imabetsu (in Honshu), and in Hokkaido, Kikonai Station.

Once in Shin Hakodate, the Hakodate Liner operates 16 shuttle services per day to reach Hakodate station. The Hakodate Liner connects Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station and Hakodate Station in just 15 minutes and links the shinkansen with all train lines with 16 round trips operating per day. Travel times are 15 to 22 minutes and ten return services are scheduled per day.

How to get to Hakodate

Once you get to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station, to get to Hakodate, the connection is easy thanks to the Hakodate Liner . Once you get to Hakodate, it is easy to discover the city with the shuttle bus or the streetcar.

How to get to Sapporo

It is very easy to get to Sapporo : once you get to Shin Hakodate station, you need to take the Ltd Express Super Hokuto or Express Hokuto (3h30). The shinkansen line addition from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo Station is scheduled to open in 2030.

From Sapporo, you can easily get to New-Chitose Airport taking a Rapid Airport Express via the JR Chitose line, which is also included in the JR Pass.

How to get to New-Chitose Airport

From Sapporo, you can easily get to New-Chitose  Sapporo : once you get to Shin Hakodate station, you need to take the Ltd Express Super Hokuto or Express Hokuto (3h30). The shinkansen line addition from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo Station is scheduled to open in 2030.

Super Hokuto trains

The Hokuto and Super Hokuto are limited express train services between Sapporo and Hakodate in Hokkaido operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). It takes The journey time of the Super Hokuto is approximately 3 hours 40 minutes, 10 minutes faster than that of the Hokuto .

Super Hokuto services started on 1 March 1994, and cut journey time by about 30 minutes due to the higher speeds through the many curves of the line between Sapporo and Hakodate.

Gran Class cars

The Hayabusa trains feature Gran Class cars – first-class travel that far exceeds that of the green class. The Gran Class involves the use of a special train car with ample seating room, as well as the constant attention of your host or hostess. Trains generally have one Gran Class car along with standard and green cars.

The train fare itself is covered by the Japan Rail Pass, but  holders must pay for an additional Gran Class charge , that is, the difference to the standard or Green Class ticket (depending on your pass). These charges vary slightly for a Hayabusa ride or for a Hayate ride from Shin-Aomori to Tokyo.

Future plans for the Hokkaido Shinkansen

The Hokkaido Shinkansen really helped bridge Tokyo and Hakodate. Before, it took 5hrs and 30mins from Tokyo to Hakodate, but on the Hokkaido Shinkansen it takes 4 hours and 2 minutes to reach Shin-Hakodate – Hokuto Station.

The goal for the Hokkaido Shinkansen is for it to reach Sapporo. The extension from   Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo is planned to open by March 2030. Tunneling work on the Murayama tunnel started in March 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2021. The 211.3 km extension will be approximately 76% in tunnels, including major tunnels such as Oshima, Teine, and Shiribeshi. Finally, when the section to Sapporo opens, the estimated travel time from Tokyo to Sapporo will be roughly 5 hours.

Having made the trip from a Tokyo to Hakodate 4 times in the last 18 months I can wholeheartedly recommend this means of travel, it is fast, comfortable, unbelievably punctual and with a JR pass extremely good value for money. Forget the plane the Shinkansen is the only way to travel throughout Japan if you want to enjoy the countryside.

The Shinkansen ride from Hakodate to Tokyo from is very comfortable (posting this while still on the bullet train, in fact). Didn’t even realise when we crossed between islands! No hot food on the train so pack a lot of snacks. The JR Pass is well worth it!

Best of Hokkaido

The Best of Hokkaido tour focuses on the northernmost of the main islands, Japan’s last frontier. Hokkaido is a natural wonderland of mountain ranges, deep caldera lakes, active volcanoes, numerous thermally-heated mineral springs and virgin forests. The attitudes of the inhabitants are akin to those of the pioneers of the American West, but still unmistakably Japanese.

However, about 50 years ago, a few cranes were found, and extensive efforts were made to bring them back from the brink of extinction. In 1944, a surprised wheat farmer found Showa-shin-zan growing out of his field instead of wheat, and it has been growing larger ever since then. We will also visit the nearby Lake Toya Volcanic Museum. Amazingly, when Usu-zan last erupted in 2000, no one was killed. But there was a lot of damage from the eruption, and much of it is preserved at the museum and illustrates the sheer power of geothermal activity and documents the volcano’s turbulent history. Buffet style breakfast and dinner at the ryokan included.

After breakfast, we travel to Hakodate. Hakodate was one of the first cities in Japan open to foreigners after the Meiji Restoration. Built in 1864 by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the shape of a five-pointed star, it was designed to trap attackers in a deadly crossfire. We will go to top of the Goryo-kaku tower next door to the fort, providing a view of the fort and the surrounding city. We will also visit the Moto-machi historic area. Overlooking the western bay at the foot of Mount Hakodate, there are numerous sloping streets lined with 19th century churches, consulates, shops and homes of the foreigners who first opened this area of Japan to commerce. In the evening, we take a cable car to the top of Mt. Hakodate, where we will enjoy a panoramic view of Hakodate’s night lights. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant included.

Each tour member receives a tour handbook. This handbook is full of tips and suggestions taken from our Japan experiences that allow you to better plan and prepare for your trip, and therefore enjoy your trip even more. The tips and suggestions included cover everything from how to save while exchanging money, what to pack, some basic Japanese-language tips, general etiquette do’s-and-don’ts, ryokan customs, etc.

  • Airfare is NOT included

The only change I suggest is the Tour Factors rating on the Best of Hokkaido web page. I think the Pace category merits three stars because we sometimes board multiple trains, buses and taxis on a tight schedule in one day to arrive at a hotel.

We had a great time and wonderful experiences. Like most other trips we took, we learned a lot of the local cultures and the unique geography and beautiful nature of the places. We also got to experience the different types of transportation in this trip, including car, bus, and train rides. The pace was good too. I only wish that I could speak some Japanese to enjoy more!

Koyo Express

Hokkaido is the first region of Japan where the autumn leaves arrive before spreading south, as it is the northernmost island of the archipelago. To better appreciate the colours, how about a train ride from Sapporo?

Mount Asahidake

A rail adventure

It's in the heart of Hokkaido that the koyo   season , autumn colored foliage, begins. From the beginning of September, the leaves start to change color and all of  Daisetsuzan   National Park,  with a total area of 220,000 hectares, is colored yellow, red and orange, to the delight of visiting nature lovers.

Read : Daisetsuzan National Park

Start your day in Sapporo: the JR limited express train to Asahikawa will take you into the wilderness in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Once there, take the bus to the Asahikawa ropeway (Sanroku station), which will raise you to 1,600 meters above sea level. It is here that the real adventure begins: on a hiking trail of about an hour, you can enjoy the view of the mountains of Daisetsuzan and visit the ponds Sugatami and Meoto.

Forests on Asahidake

Biei fields in autumn

A village with a thousand colors

From Asahikawa, a local train takes you to the village of Biei, a little further west of Daisetsuzan National Park. The flower season gives way to the harvest season. The forest around the blue pond Aoi ike is dyed in the colors of the earth and reveals a calm and relaxing atmosphere, without the tourists, often numerous in summer. The colorful Four Seasons Hill, Shikisai no oka, is also a place to enjoy the best views of the island.

For those who prefer to simply enjoy the view, a bus ride service is available and changes according to the season: from late September to early October, the Biei Bus View takes you to the Biei Hills (Tour of the hills) or enjoy the panorama of flowering fields and the blue pond (Flower fields and blue pond tour).

Adult price: 2,000 yen; Children's rate (up to 11 years old): 1,000 yen.

Finally, remember that if you travel from Sapporo to Biei and Furano , the Furano-Biei Rail Ticket allows you to travel unlimited for 4 days for 6,500 yen ($58).

How to Travel Through Europe by Train Like a Pro

Last Updated on June 8, 2023

Traveling through Europe by train is a wonderful experience that offers a unique and authentic way to explore the continent. It is a cost-effective and sustainable way to travel that gives you a chance to see the breathtaking scenery of Europe.

However, train travel can also be overwhelming for first-timers. That’s why we’ve put together this guide on traveling through Europe by train like a pro.

Make an Itinerary

The first step to traveling through Europe by train like a pro is to plan ahead. Research your destinations and create a rough itinerary of the places you want to visit, as well as the duration of your stay. You can use websites such as Rail Europe or Eurail to plan your train journeys and book tickets in advance. This can save you money, time, and heartache on your adventure!

Buy a Rail Pass

If you plan to take multiple train journeys during your trip, buying a rail pass is worth considering. A rail pass allows you to travel on most trains in Europe without purchasing individual tickets for each journey. Different types of rail passes are available, depending on the length of your trip and the countries you want to visit.

Utilize Nearby Luggage Storage

When traveling through Europe by train, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to store your luggage temporarily. This can happen if you arrive at your destination before your hotel check-in time or want to explore a city without carrying heavy bags.

Fortunately, many train stations in Europe offer luggage storage facilities. For example, if you’re spending the day in St. Pancras, simply look for luggage storage in St. Pancras . Now, you can explore the city with peace of mind — and no heavy bags weighing you down.

Choose Your Train

When traveling through Europe by train , you can take high-speed trains, regional trains, or overnight trains. High-speed trains, such as the Eurostar or TGV, are faster and more expensive than regional trains. However, they are a smart option for longer journeys or days you want to travel between two distant cities in a short amount of time.

Regional trains, on the other hand, are slower but cheaper. They are an option if you want to explore smaller towns and villages along your route. Overnight trains, such as the Nightjet, allow you to save time and money by combining transportation and accommodation.

One of the advantages of traveling through Europe by train is the ability to easily move from one place to another. However, this can be difficult if you are carrying a heavy suitcase. Therefore, it is important to pack light and only bring the essentials. A backpack or a small suitcase is ideal for train travel.

Arrive Early

You should arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before your train departure time. This allows you to find your platform, check the train timetable, and board the train stress-free. After all, when a train says it leaves at 10:00, you best believe it’ll be on the move promptly at 10:00.

Additionally, arriving early can give you time to grab a coffee or a snack from one of the many cafes at the train station.

Validate Your Ticket

If you have purchased individual train tickets, don’t forget to validate them before boarding the train. You can do this at the yellow validation machines located at the train station. Failure to validate your ticket can result in a fine if you are caught by a ticket inspector on the train.

Keep Your Ticket Handy

Once you have boarded the train, it is important to keep your ticket handy. Ticket inspectors may ask to see your ticket any time during the journey, so it is best to have it easily accessible. Additionally, some trains have a designated area for luggage storage, so be sure to keep your bags in the appropriate area.

Bring Your Own Food

While some trains have dining cars or food carts, it is always a good idea to bring your own food and snacks for the journey. This can save you money and ensure that you have something to eat if the train has no food options or limited options.

Enjoy the Scenery

Last but not least, one of the most important things to remember when traveling through Europe by train is to take the time to enjoy the scenery. Europe is home to some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and architecture, and traveling by train allows you to see it all from a unique perspective.

Happy Travels!

Traveling through Europe by train is a fantastic experience that offers a unique and authentic way to explore the continent. With these tips, you can travel like a pro and make the most of your journey. Remember to plan ahead, pack light, and most importantly, enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.

Amtrak Is Expanding Its Midwest Service — and Tickets Start at $41

The new Amtrak Borealis train will launch May 21 with afternoon departures from St. Paul and late morning departures from Chicago.

hokkaido train tour

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

Amtrak will launch a new train service later this month, expanding access between the Twin Cities and Chicago.

The new Amtrak Borealis train will launch May 21 with afternoon departures from St. Paul and late morning departures from Chicago, according to the rail company . The train will represent a second daily option to travel between the two major cities.

Tickets start at just $41 for coach fares.

“A second daily passenger rail service connecting St. Paul to Chicago via Milwaukee is a welcome addition to our transportation system, providing more choices and travel flexibility for passengers,” Nancy Daubenberger, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, said in a statement, adding it will “provide another safe, reliable transportation option.”

When it starts, the Borealis train will make the current stops on the Empire Builder line between St. Paul and Milwaukee as well as the stops on the Hiawatha line between Milwaukee and Chicago, according to Amtrak. The train will feature several stops in Wisconsin, including in the popular Wisconsin Dells .

The entire ride will take just under 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Each Borealis train will feature both coach and business class seats, a cafe car complete with regional items, and views of the Mississippi River between St. Paul and La Crosse, WI. The new service was sponsored by each of the states it crosses: Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, according to the rail company.

“This is a win for passenger rail expansion in America, and more importantly, it’s a win for a growing number of Americans who rely on passenger rail and benefit from it,” Federal Railroad Administrator Amit Bose said in the statement. “Investments in rail have long helped Midwesterners and the region’s economy, and this new service will mean additional access for people traveling between Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois while contributing to economic growth.”

Travelers heading on from Chicago will be able to get to their destinations quickly since Amtrak increased the speed limit last year along the Chicago to St. Louis corridor to as fast as 110 mph.

Monday Leaderboard: Brooks Koepka is ready to slow the Scottie Scheffler train

A dominant liv win and a heartbreaking pga tour loss headline this week's top golf stories.

Welcome to the Monday Leaderboard, where we run down the weekend’s top stories in the wonderful world of golf. Grab an Arnold Palmer, pull up a chair, and plot how you’re going to qualify for the U.S. Open …

1. Brooks Koepka is in major-winning form

Brooks Koepka won his fourth LIV Golf tournament this past weekend in Singapore, and he sure seems to be rounding into PGA Championship-defending form after an unspectacular T45 at the Masters. Koepka has won more LIV tournaments than anyone else in the young tour’s history, and while it’s easy to mock LIV — which generates far more headlines than fan interest — the simple fact is that Koepka is beating guys like Jon Rahm, Cam Smith and other elite pros when he wins these events.

And Koepka, when he’s in the hunt, is tough to beat. He has five majors, more than any active player not named Phil or Tiger. There was an eight-major stretch prior to the pandemic when he won three times, finished runner-up twice, and finished below seventh only once. That’s domination, and even if he’s not quite back to that level after injuries, he’s still a serious threat to Scottie Scheffler’s domination.

Koepka is interested in exactly one goal: winning majors. Everything else is prelude and training. He doesn’t bother with most of LIV’s trappings — he didn’t even bother to wear team gear at his Smash GC news conference , for instance — and he’s not much for golf’s airy green-cathedral nonsense. He knows exactly how many people are ranked above him on the career majors leaderboard, and that’s his focus.

Scheffler will be the odds-on favorite at the PGA Championship next week. If he stumbles, Koepka — who has three PGAs to Scheffler’s zero — will be right there to step over him.

2. A heartwarming — and heartbreaking — victory

The 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson won’t go down in history as anyone’s favorite tournament … well, except for Taylor Pendrith, who nabbed his first PGA Tour win thanks to a two-shot 72nd-hole swing. Unimaginative course, uninspiring field, awkward name, difficult position on the calendar … everything broke against the CJ Cup, and yet despite all that drama forced its way through. Pendrith let a lead slip away as Ben Kohles mounted a late charge, and Kohles held a one-shot lead on the 18th tee. But a wayward drive, a flubbed chip and a missed par putt cost Kohles dearly on the final hole, the easiest on the course.

Oh, my. 😳 Ben Kohles bogeys the final hole of the CJ CUP Byron Nelson and loses by one to Taylor Pendrith. pic.twitter.com/1am5YfVFV6 — Golf Digest (@GolfDigest) May 5, 2024

Pendrith stayed steady and birdied the par-5 to pull off the two-shot swing and claim his first career victory, which comes with an invitation to the 2024 PGA Championship and the 2025 Masters. Golf gives, and golf takes away.

On the plus side, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson did give us this indelible moment:

This fan's rocking the Jake Knapp flow 💇‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/46UVeVGmhR — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 4, 2024

3. LIV players’ major hopes

LIV players are now in the “find out” section of their decision to jump from the PGA Tour and join the upstart golf league; there’s more money, but fewer pathways to majors.

At the moment, eight players are eligible for the PGA Championship based on prior victories — Koepka and Phil Mickelson, for instance, have lifetime exemptions, while players like Cam Smith and Jon Rahm can trade on recent major victories. As for the Opens later this summer, most LIV players will need to qualify; nearly 40 have announced their plans to attempt to play their way into the U.S. Open and Open Championship.

One who isn’t: 2023 LIV champion Talor Gooch, who did not receive a special invitation into the Masters and isn’t inclined to put himself out there for the other majors, either. Gooch has insisted that the majors lack gravity without LIV players in the field; you can argue with that angle, and with Gooch’s decision not to even attempt to qualify, but he’s sticking to his guns.

4. Another teen prodigy finds PGA Tour success

Another week, another kid younger than your socks finding success on the PGA Tour. This time around, it’s 16-year-old Kris Kim, son of former LPGA player Ji-Hyun Suh. Kim made the cut at the CJ Cup, the youngest player to do so since Kyle Suppa in 2015. Kim finished at 65th after struggling on the weekend, but he’ll have shots like this one to remember:

Come for 16-year-old Kris Kim's near ace ... Stay for his parents' reaction 🥹 pic.twitter.com/grAS701Pfu — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 4, 2024

Golf’s a tricky game and there are many pitfalls on the way up the mountain, but Kim has a good head start. Plus, golf is now apparently the province of the young. We can expect a kindergartner to make a cut by November.

5. $pon$or exemption controver$y

Sponsor exemptions are the Gentleman’s C of the golf world, a handy perk doled out by tournament organizers to goose interest or, in some cases, reward colleagues. It’s how teen stars and non-golfers like John Smoltz and Steph Curry get invitations into tournaments. One player raising eyebrows at the number of sponsor exemptions he’s received: 227th-ranked Webb Simpson, who has played in multiple signature events this season on sponsor exemptions and is slated to play in another this weekend. Sponsor exemptions into the big-money signature events are valuable commodities, so there are questions as to why Simpson continues to receive them. One possible answer: Simpson is a member of the Tour’s Players Advisory Council and a significant figure in the ongoing schism in the golf world. Golf takes care of its own, regardless of how it might look to the outside world.

The Honorary Jordan Spieth Mulligan: Jordan Spieth

Look, Spieth may not be winning a whole lot of majors anymore, but he’s still golf’s agent of chaos, guaranteed to unleash something you’ve never seen before in pretty much every round he plays. Hence, we’ve named this section after him … and you’ll never guess who’s the first honoree.

A bounce ... off an elbow into the fairway?! 😲 @JordanSpieth gifted this fan a signed ball after the lucky kick. pic.twitter.com/zvCsUTzgWt — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 3, 2024

Yes, that’s Spieth himself, offering up a ball (and a tightly folded bill) to the fan who took an errant Spieth shot off the elbow. The fan’s deflection kicked the ball back into the fairway — good fortune for Spieth, but not good enough, as he missed the cut. At least that bruise lasted through the weekend.

Swing away and roll ‘em true this week, friends, and we’ll see you back here next Monday!
