The Green Dragon Hostel

“do not pass” the green dragon hostel.

In the original Lord of the Rings movie, Gandalf slams his wooden staff to the ground and yells to the Balrog, “You shall not pass!” Well….if you find yourself hiking in Georgia someday, you’d be smart to listen to Gandalf’s words and “ DO NOT PASS ” the Green Dragon Hostel in Hiawassee. It’s life changing!

Lord of the Rings and AT Inspired

The Green Dragon Hostel was born from their love of the Lord of the Rings movies and hiking the Appalachian Trail. They wanted to be around hikers. They wanted a place where backpackers from all over the world could meet and chat about their adventures on the trail.

As I wrote in my last post, Bill picked us up at Unicoi Gap. They will pick you up from Unicoi Gap to Dicks Creek and anywhere in between. We were hungry and Bill dropped us off at a diner, but he could have also stopped for fast food for us.

As Bill gave us a tour of the place, I couldn’t help but think I had stumbled into the classic movie “Lost Horizon” and found Shangri-La.

Yes, I’m a movie guy and therefore; a little biased with the whole LOTR theme, but what a beautiful oasis this place is for hikers. My first thought was, how can I retire here? 

Matt must have been thinking the same thing because he wouldn’t put down his lucky hiking stick that closely resembles Gandalf’s staff. 

 To his credit, he does look a little like a young Gandalf. His beard needs to kick it in gear, but they both love playing with fire and spouting out words of wisdom. Although, I don’t recall Gandalf having ripped pants revealing his boxers. Just saying!

I can’t say enough about my experience at this hidden paradise, so I’ll just write about it. Let’s start with my favorite pastime; sitting on the porch upstairs with a cup of coffee or a cold beverage, as I enjoyed the amazing view of the Georgia mountains after a long day of hiking. 

At all times of the day, you could find hikers hanging out up here socializing and enjoying the breathtaking views. Matt and Nate talking cars above.

After taking a shower and putting all my wet and dirty clothes in a wash sack, (they wash, dry and have them folded for you each night before you go to bed) I dove onto one of the bunk beds. It felt so good! Super comfortable, with curtains for privacy and outlets for charging my devices; I was in heaven.

At 3:30  Bill and Donna dropped us off at an outfitters and a market to resupply. I finally got a chance to see the famous “Little Debbie” cakes that I read about in “A Walk in the Woods.”

After that, they dropped us all off at a local restaurant to eat and drink. Picking us up when we were done!  Seriously! How can I retire here?

Slack packers

The next morning, after being served a hearty breakfast with Brennon, Nina and Matt, (Davey Crockett) I was ready to hit the trails. Although I’d miss second breakfast, I knew I’d be back for dinner. 

Two other older guys and I decided to slack pack it for a day or two.  The Green Dragon will lend you day packs to use while hiking the trail.  I love sleeping outdoors, but once in a while, it’s nice to not have to carry the weight and set up in the rain. 

There was a big storm coming into Georgia and it wasn’t just dirt clouds from an army of marching Orcs, it was rain nonstop for a week. We were ready to head out, but happily found out that Bill and Donna would let us slack pack as far as Neel, Tesnatee, Hog Pen, and north of Dicks Creek, Blue Ridge, Deep Gap, Mooney and Albert. Which means I can still knock out 10 easy miles a day, but be back for dinner each night at the Hostel. I love it! I ended up slack packing into North Carolina. It felt amazing to have crunched it up and down the Georgia mountains into another state.

Hi, my name is Kevin, and I’ve got “Georgia on My Mind.” That will be my only music reference. This die-hard movie guy will start the Appalachian Trail on April 25th. I will be a recently retired (as of April 23rd) middle school Special Ed teacher.When I’m not getting up to go to work, I’m getting up to hike some of the most beautiful trails in Marin County, California, and currently, the Sierra Nevada mountain range. My siblings are taking bets on how long I will last, but I will not let their pessimism deter me. Hey, if Frodo and Samwise can walk for 13 months to Mount Doom in bare feet, eating just bread, how hard can hiking to Mount Katahdin be, right?

Donna and Bill are 2 of the finest people you will ever meet. Both come from an education background and are as giving as anyone around. Once you meet them you’ll understand. I proud to have been a colleague but more proud to be their friend. It has been a long time dream of their’s to own a hostel and as expected a very successful and beautiful place. If you are hiking around the Hiawassee area stop by the Green Dragon. You’ll be glad you did.

Linda and I enjoyed our Grand Deluxe Trans Siberian Tour

This is just a note to say how much Linda and I enjoyed our Grand Deluxe Trans Siberian Tour Rail adventure with Travel all Russia. We were especially glad to have seen the subways in Moscow which were not on the original agenda, but that our guide made sure we saw. Also, the opening ceremony at Naadaam in Mongolia was not in the schedule, but we were delighted to have a front row seat. It was an outstanding show.

Small Group Trans-Siberian Journey summer 2016

Our journey to Russia was a great one. All of the guides were wonderful and everything was so well organized.

There are just a few things I'd suggest. I think you need to warn future travelers about the Chinese train. There were not two lower berths as we were told and since neither of us was able to climb to the top bunk, we had to take turns sleeping! Also, the train was disgustingly dirty.

Other than that, the other accommodations were fine. As far as the food, there was much too much fish and borscht.

The trains were clean, comfortable and always on time.

The hotels, though varied, were always welcoming and attractive. The restaurants, for the most part, served us well.

Our guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Once a guide could not join us because of a medical problem, and the next day another guide took us to two days' sites in one day.

Many thanks for arranging a most memorable Epic Trans-Siberian Adventure journey for us!
