Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city is also its most visited, with high-flyers jetting in for business—notably the headquarters for the UN are here, amongst others—as well as pleasure. With the Rhône to the side, Lake Geneva, and the surrounding snow-capped Alps, it has one the loveliest city settings in Europe. Trips can include exploring charming cobbled streets, luxury shopping, the Palace of Nations, museums, and onwards to some of the best ski resorts in Europe . Suitably, Geneva is home to an array of refined boltholes, grand dames, and notable hotel names that overlook Lac Léman, the Alps and the Jura. Here is our edit of the best hotels in Geneva, Switzerland.

Hotel d'Angleterre Geneva

Hotel d'Angleterre Geneva Arrow

As part of the Tollman family’s Red Carnation Collection, Hotel d'Angleterre offers a loveable one-of-a-kind combination of English charm and Swiss elegance. Built in 1872 in a prime spot facing the lake, for many years it operated as the smallest five-star in Geneva, with just 45 rooms—until the 2021 opening of the nearby Woodward, which has a mere 26. Nevertheless, the Angleterre still feels very intimate and clubby. Guests who have spent time at other Red Carnation properties will recognize familiar Tollman design tics: the theatrically draped curtains and shimmering silk wall coverings, the quarry-depleting quantities of marble and onyx in the bathrooms, and the colorful chandeliers. The Presidential Suite—the best for lake views —has welcomed many notable figures over the years. The Angleterre’s Windows restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. The afternoon tea is a particular highlight, living up to the Englishness implied by the hotel’s name, with its finger sandwiches, scones, and exceptional selection of teas.

Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues Geneva Arrow

Hôtel des Bergues is Geneva’s very first hotel, built in 1834 along the waterfront and transformed into a Four Seasons in 2005. The rooms are wonderfully opulent in a loosely neo-classical, Louis Philippe–inflected style, with lots of brocade and toile de Jouy in shades of Wedgwood blue and almond green. If that’s not your style, reserve one of the Loft Suites on the sixth floor that embrace a ‘contemporary Swiss chalet’ aesthetic. The lively Michelin-starred Il Lago restaurant sits on the ground floor while Japanese restaurant Izumi serves delicious sushi alfresco on the trendy rooftop. Last but certainly not least, the top floor’s Asian-inspired Spa Mont Blanc is one of the big draws for the hotel, which covers two floors and includes a decent-sized pool.

Beau-Rivage Genève Arrow

Elegantly posed behind the Rotonde du Mont-Blanc, this grand neoclassical-Italian-style building has operated as a hotel since 1865, originally run by the Mayer family and now more recently by the Casacubertas family. Rooms are deeply traditional—wall sconces, chandeliers, and gilt-frames. The most recent spate of renovation, which concluded in 2018, saw the addition of 17 rooms on the fifth and sixth floors, including half a dozen split-level ‘duplexes’ and a new Royal Suite, which really is pharaonic. The main fine-dining restaurant, Le Chat-Botté, opened in 1967 and remains a thriving local institution. Michelin -anointed chef Dominique Gauthier has been there for a quarter of a century, famous for his traditional French dishes, including frogs’ legs and foie gras. For a more intimate affair, La Terrasse Alpine served up cheese fondue in heated gondola cabins.

The Woodward Arrow

The Woodward is by turns wild and lavish, demure and delicate. The eclecticism that confronts you when you step in off the street—a deliberately dissonant jolt of crystal, marble, murals, gilded Victorian lacquer, midcentury modernism, and Macassar ebony—soon settles down, but that initial impression of fizz and drama lingers. Each of the 26 suites is decked out in glorious, richly textured style. The Guerlain Spa is a knockout . In addition to the spa itself, there is a 70-foot pool , two saunas, two steam rooms, a hot tub, a gym, and a cigar lounge. —Steve King

Les Armures

History buffs will love the location of Les Armures, set within a 17th century building in the center of the Old Town. Expect to be greeted by beams, wall sconces, and charming alcoves, while bedrooms blend the old with contemporary touches. For such a historic address the junior suite is surprisingly spacious and ideal for families with an optional sofa bed setup. The hotel is also home to the city’s oldest restaurant, serving up traditional Swiss fare including the must-have two-cheese fondue.

Hôtel Bristol Genève

Another grand dame on the lake, Hôtel Bristol dates back to 1896 and yet its decor points to the later Art Deco era. Expect rooms to be bold, with French designer Annie Zéau applying a unique contemporary Art Deco aesthetic via geometric carpets, botanical wallpaper, and bright pops of color. Jewel tones and botanical prints continue in The Côté Square, which changes its international menu every month to reflect a different country’s traditional cuisine.

InterContinental Genève

This is one to bookmark for the summer months. Much of the appeal of this central hotel—located near the Palace of Nations—lies outside. Rooms and suites offer varying picturesque views of Lake Geneva, Mont-Blanc, Jura mountains, or Geneva city. Book into the Residence Suite for views of it all. And then there are the surrounding lush gardens, with the verdant summer terrace Woods restaurant, as well as the outdoor pool surrounded by lush greenery and lined with lounges.

Where to stay in Geneva: 7 Best Areas

Where to stay in Geneva

Are you wondering where to stay in Geneva ? Check out our list of the top 7 places to stay in Geneva for all needs and budgets.

When people think Switzerland, Geneva, Switzerland’s second most-populous city , doesn’t immediately come to mind. But, Geneva is a sparkling gem in Switzerland’s crown in its own right, even if it doesn’t capture the popularity of most European cities.

Perhaps best known as a world-recognized center of diplomacy , Geneva is truly a global city that hosts more international organizations than anywhere else.

This recognition has earned Geneva the nickname “The Peace Capital.” It is also a world financial center and an extremely livable city, with more and more people of all ages moving there every year.

With a rich history and a stellar international reputation, Geneva is a can’t miss place to visit on your next journey to Switzerland.

Once you decide to stay in Geneva, you’ll need to start looking for accommodation . Because Geneva hosts so many international events, the city is a best-in-class example of hospitality.

Price, style and availability for hotels and hostels all change depending on the season you visit and how far in advance you book your trip, as reservations go quickly.

But, be prepared: Switzerland has one of the highest costs of living in Europe , and Geneva is no different. Expect to pay a good portion on accommodation alone.

Though you may see some great deals open up the longer you wait to book, it’s better to reserve your spot in advance so your trip is stress-free.

Table of Contents

7 Best Areas Where to Stay in Geneva

1. Old Town, the best area where to stay in Geneva

Old Town Geneva

When tourists visit Old Town Geneva, they are instantly transported to ancient Switzerland, greeted by richly historic, winding cobblestones streets and beautiful old buildings .

In other words, be prepared for a lesson in culture when staying in Old Town, as there is no shortage of things to see and do. Here, you’ll find quaint cafes and hearty restaurants next to stately buildings and adventure around every corner.

A can’t miss sight of Old Town, and perhaps of all of Geneva, is the Cathédrale St-Pierre , a world-famous relic. Founded in the 4th century, the Cathédrale St-Pierre was originally built as a Roman Catholic Church.

It currently sits at the highest point in Old Town and even houses the largest archeological site north of the Alps – but, be prepared for a steep climb to see the cathedral and its stunning panoramic views.

After climbing back down, check out the La Place du Bourg-de-Four , the oldest town square in Geneva and a Roman marketplace back in the day.

Now, it is a bustling epicenter of activity and a great place to shop or enjoy a cup of coffee – you can even enjoy delectable chocolates at Chocolates Tea Room while taking in the people watching.

You’ll also want to check out the Promenade de la Treille , a tranquil and beautiful promenade offering 360-degree views of all of Geneva.

Geneva also hosts incredible art museums and galleries, including The International Museum of the Reformatio n for historical pieces and La Galerie Insolite for contemporary art.

Old Town is arguably the most popular place to stay in Geneva, so expect high prices for accommodation here . In addition, many of the hotels here have a desirable quaint aesthetic and are popular for their centrality.

If you’re looking for some old-world charm and an easy walking distance to most everything the city has to offer, Old Town is a great place to stay in Geneva.

2. Paquis, where to stay in Geneva for nightlife

Paquis, Geneva

Derived from the French word “pâturage,” translating to “pasture,” Paquis was once miles and miles of green meadow on the outskirts of Geneva.

Though the area still retains its peace and tranquility, it has also grown into a lively cultural and nightlife scene , with amazing dining options, bars and clubs. It is also Geneva’s functioning Red Light District.

A little bit gritty and a whole lot of fun, Paquis is definitely a great place to stay for the on-the-go traveler looking for an immersive experience.

A great place to start a day in Paquis, especially during the summer, is at the , a popular artificial beach in Geneva. Here, you’ll catch sunbathers soaking some rays and swimmers taking a dip in the lake.

And, even when the colder months hit, you’ll still be able to enjoy the Bains from the saunas and Turkish baths nearby. You can also take a yellow taxi boat from here and see Lake Geneva up close.

If you want to stretch your legs, take a walk down the Paquis Lake Promenade . You’ll see joggers and rollerblades zipping by, as well as some beautiful flower gardens, monuments and art sculptures, all with stunning Lake Geneva as a backdrop.

Though once concurrent with a sleazy reputation, Paquis’ nightlife and cultural scene has rejuvenated in recent decades, offering some of the best dining and bars in Geneva .

One of the hottest streets to see and be seen is Rue de Berne . Kick up your heels at nightclub The Mambo and then, before you go to bed, check out Scandale , a bar right next to the train station great for grabbing a final cocktail or bite to eat.

Accommodation in Paquis is somewhat on a spectrum. On one end, you have luxury hotels overlooking the lake, including the world-famous Hotel President Wilson.

In the middle you have cheaper hotels great for a no-frills stay. In addition, Geneva’s two youth hostels are located in Paquis, which are great low-budget options for young travelers.

Though Geneva is an incredibly safe area, Paquis can get a bit seedy at night . So, if you plan on going out, always take a friend with you and arrange for a ride home ahead of time to avoid walking after dark.

This area, as you may have guessed, may not be the most-kid friendly compared to other options on this list.

3. Plainpalais, great organic shopping and kids activities

Best places to stay in Geneva: Plainpalais

Beautiful Plainpalais is a popular area with novice tourists and seasoned residents alike, known for its friendly atmosphere, walkable streets and community-oriented activities.

Here, between quaint, open air markets and shops is a proud cultural scene that surprisingly, was mentioned in Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Frankenstein . You can even catch a Zombie statue hailing the cameo in the Plainpalais skatepark.

But, beyond this spooky piece of trivia, Plainpalais has grown into a distinct area all its own that continues to grow.

Plaine de Plainpalais is an open, uniquely-shaped space in Plainpalais that serves as a great landmark to orient yourself in Geneva, as it is such a central location. And, it is a meeting place for people and businesses of all walks of life.

Plainpalais is perhaps best known for hosting t he biggest combination farmer’s and flea market in Geneva .

On Sundays (and in a smaller capacity during the week), aisles of fresh fruits, vegetables and specialty meats and cheeses line the Plaine, offered at great prices and great quality. There’s also small fast food stalls for a quick bite, representing various countries across the world.

The Plainpalais Flea Marke t is another great option for shopping, with second-hand items like books, toys and clothes discounted to low prices.

Plainpalais is also a great place where to stay in Geneva if you have kids .

The Plainpalais skatepark is a regular meeting-point for skaters and roller-bladers of all skill levels and there are several playgrounds on the Plaine.

For more family fun, touring carnivals and theme parks set up regularly in the Plaine during the year. And, check out the sprawling Université de Genève campus to really see Geneva’s world-class education in action.

For the weary adults, check out Rue de l’Ecole-de-Médecine , Plainpalais’ nightlife hotspot, once the kids go to sleep.

As Plainpalais is a popular area with visitors, specifically those traveling for business , hotels and accommodation here can be a bit on the pricier side . But, if you want stunning river views, easy access to the sights and a mix of lively and calm, Plainpalais is the place for you.

4. Carouge, cool neighborhood where to stay in Geneva

Carouge, Geneva

A walk in Carogue may make you think you’ve been whisked to the trendy boutiques and upscale vibrance of Lower Manhattan. So much so, that this area has been nicknamed “Greenwich Village,” and now retains the reputation as Geneva’s hippest suburb.

And, Carogue has an extremely unique history. The area previously belonged to the French and Italian and was modeled after the classic-Mediterranean style of Nice , giving it the distinct seaside flair and unique architecture you’ll see today.

Beloved by residents and tourists alike, Carogue, the former trading town now bohemian artisan mecca , is a great stop during a stay in Geneva, situated perfectly by the River Arve.

A stroll in Carouge will introduce you to artisans and craftsmen of all kinds. Check out glass-blowing shops, antique furniture stores, second-hand bookstores and much more on Rue St-Joseph and into Place du Marché , exploring as you go along.

If you’re looking for more retail goods, check out Centre Commercial de Carouge, which has a major toy store on the first floor for the kids to check out.

Carouge is bustling at any time of day, but during the afternoon, make sure to check out any one of the cafes, patisseries, boulangeries or eateries for a bite to eat.

And, there’s more than likely to be a festival or event to attend. For the athletes, Carouge is home to Piscine de la Fontenette , an Olympic-sized swimming pool with an adjacent water slide and diving board which can get especially crowded during the summer months.

For indoor activities, try the Théâtre de Carouge for popular films and the Musée de Carouge to learn more about Carouge’s history.

Once nightfall hits, it feels like you’re being transported to a romantic, dreamy evening in Tuscany. Carouge is becoming famous for its burgeoning cocktail scene , and you’ll be sure to find a bar or restaurant on Rue Vautier , a hotspot for young people and visiting tourists.

Bar du Nord is famous for its whiskey drinks and Club Chat Noir combines great drinks and live music. For a real fist-pumping experience, try Bypass, Geneva’s biggest club . To walk off your meal, take an evening stroll along the Arve river and reflect on the magic of Carouge.

Despite its hopping nightlife, Carouge is significantly more calm than other areas of Geneva and maintains a large residential population. So, you may find more apartments for rent or AirBnB-style accommodation here versus other areas.

Accommodation is less expensive here than in Old Town , but as the area grows more popular, its seen an increase in price. But, this family-friendly area is close to everything you’d want to see and offers great hotels.

5. Eaux Vives, best place to stay in Geneva for families

Where to stay in Geneva: Eaux Vives

Calm , eclectic and inviting Eaux Vives is another area people may forget when thinking of Geneva. But, this area is not one to be left out, and has really transformed from its location as Geneva’s harbor decades ago.

Eaux Vives successfully mixes urban and rural , giving you the impression you’re in a small city while also being surrounded by green spaces and playgrounds.

With no shortage of things to do, it’s not surprise that Eaux Vives is growing more popular with tourists, even when the locals would rather keep it a hidden gem.

Start a day in Eaux Vives by waking up with an incredible cup of coffee. Eaux Vives has several local cafes to choose from and friendly staff.

While strolling with your beverage, check out what is perhaps Geneva’s most famous landmark, the Jet D’Eau . Otherwise known as the Geneva Water Fountain and directly translated to “water jet,” this spectacular fountain is one of the tallest in the world and a symbol of the majestic strength of Geneva.

The Pierres du Niton (Neptune’s Stones) are also within eyesight here, and showcase remnants of the last Ice Age.

For more beautiful sights, stroll through the nearby Parc de la Grange , a former private garden with a beautiful rose display now open to all or the grassy Parc des Eaux-Vives.

Eaux-Vives is an incredible place to visit for anyone that has a sweet tooth or appreciates good food . Home to two delicious ice cream parlors and various dining options, Rue des Eaux-Vives offers several options for a sit-down dinner or a quick bite to eat.

If you feel like catching a post-dinner movie or just relaxing, check out Les Scala Cinema for a film or Bain Bleu for spa relaxation, rooftop views and a tasty cocktail.

Like Carouge, Eaux-Vives is more on the residential side and isn’t as bustling as other places on this list. Still, because it wouldn’t be Switzerland without the high prices for accommodation, the hotels in Eaux-Vives are still pricey.

Eaux-Vives is a great area where to stay in Geneva if you’re traveling with kids or just want a quiet getaway.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN EAUX VIVES

  • ($$$) Hôtel Résidence Parc des Eaux Vives

  • ($) Hotel Sagitta

6. Saint-Gervais et des Grottes, a proud history meets modern innovation

Best places to stay in Geneva

Nothing if not dynamic, complex, artsy and alternative, Saint-Gervais et des Grottes is a walking contradiction of a district. Home to artists and craftsmen of all trades, Saint-Gervais is a far cry from the white-collar professionals of Geneva’s financial center.

And, for good reason. The area and its residents have had to fight for its survival many a time, having faced demolition in the past. This spry, humble grit can still be seen the atmosphere of Saint-Gervais et des Grottes today.

As you walk through the narrow streets, you’ll be reminded of walking in a quaint little village, with original buildings, small shops and historic constructions all around you.

You may also seem some funny-shaped and colorful homes . Take it all in and prepare for an amazing day in this unique area.

Saint-Gervais et des Grottes is easy to reach. The Cornavin railway station is located at the center of the area and is close to the Mont-Blanc commercial and shopping area , a very popular spot with tourists.

If you walk down Rue de l’Industrie , you’ll see the remnants of an industrial hotspot, with old workshops and watchmaking warehouses all around, bearing witness to the hard-working past of Saint-Gervais et des Grottes.

But, one sight in the area you’ll never see anywhere else is a complex housing structure fondly known as the “Schtroumpf” Building , a building with asymmetrical volumes, eclectic colors and curved walls.

Its name calls on the fact that the building resembles the tiny mushrooms of a Smurf village.

Nightlife i n Les Grottes is as exciting as many other areas on this list, with small cafes and bars great for a casual night out.

Saint-Gervais et des Grottes has become a very popular spot in recent years, as tourists have flocked to see the area that residents have worked so hard to preserve.

Accommodation here isn’t cheap, but you’re sure to find great apartments or AirBnBs for rent at a good deal.

In addition, if you’re feeling fancy, the Ritz Carlton Hotel de la Paix is a close walk from here and offers stunning views of Lake Geneva for a pretty penny.

7. Airport area, where to stay in Geneva on a budget

Geneva Airport

Unlike some other cities, Geneva’s Airport, Genève Aéroport, is fairly close to the rest of the city. And, Swiss transport is best-in-class, simple and fast, so getting to the center of Geneva is a quick journey – but still budget for at least 6 hours if you have a layover.

In addition, make sure to check your bag before going through customers if you plan on leaving the airport.

As you step off the train, take a short walk to the Mont Blanc Bridge . This historic bridge spans Lake Geneva and the Rhone River and is a great way to take in the sights and some fresh air.

If you’re internationally-inclined, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum is only 1.5 miles from the airport and is a testament to the incredible humanitarian efforts of history.

You can also take a tour of the Palais de Nations , the home of Europe’s U.N. Office and hosting up to 25,000 delegates every year.

The Jardin Botanique – Villa le Chene is also a mere 2 miles from Geneva’s airport, so if you’re keen to see blossoming flowers and plants, an Alpine rock garden and even a critter or too, this is a great stop.

Because Geneva’s airport area sees thousands of travelers a day, the hotels and accommodation options here are wide and diverse .

There are many budget options if you’re hoping to save some money, and many hotels offer business services like internet desks, dry cleaning and transportation options.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN AIRPORT AREA

  • ($$) Crowne Plaza Geneva, an IHG Hotel
  • ($) Nash Airport Hotel
  • ($) ibis Styles Geneve Palexpo Aeroport

If you’re in Geneva for a business trip , staying near the airport is a great option, as the hospitality here is in a class of its own.

No matter where you decide to stay in Geneva , you can’t go wrong by staying in an area on this list. Each area offers a unique flair and cultural experience and you’ll be sure to find something you like. Come visit Geneva today and take in all this great city has to offer!

Where to Stay in Geneva (Best Places in 2024)

From the outside, Geneva may seem a little vanilla. Packed full of corporation headquarters, international trade and diplomatic hubs – it didn’t exactly scream “fun” to me.

However, I promise you. After you’ve scratched past the surface, you’ll find it’s full of flavour!

Located on the shores of the largest freshwater lake in Europe, Geneva is one of Switzerland’s main cities. From its historical streets and incredible wine to its action-packed watersports and skiing – Geneva is one of those cities that has a little something for everyone.

During my stay in Geneva, whilst exploring the different areas, I quite quickly noticed the diversity. From business hubs to hip, bohemian neighborhoods – each had a fiercely independent feel. As exciting as this is to explore, it also makes deciding where to stay in Geneva a daunting task.

The best area to stay in Geneva completely depends on you and what you want to get out of your trip. Luckily, I’ve created this ultimate guide with you in mind! I’ve compiled the top areas to stay depending on your travel style and budget.

So, let’s get down to business and find the best place in Geneva for you!

Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues | Best Luxury Hotel in Geneva

Four Seasons des bergues, Geneva Switzerland

Geneva’s most luxurious hotel in my opinion and the first hotel opened in all of Switzerland, back in 1834. You’ll have a great view from your room or suite. Whether you choose a view of the Geneva Lake or one of their other suites looking out to the gardens or the old town.

The Four Seasons also has a unique feature on the roof… an indoor pool with an infinity edge, a special underwater music system, plus incredible views of the Swiss Alps and Geneva’s old town city center.

City Hostel Geneva | Best Hostel in Geneva

City Hostel Geneva

The City Hotel was actually the first hostel in Geneva. It offers affordable private and dorm rooms with shared bathrooms as well as kitchen facilities. The hostel also provides laundry facilities, luggage storage, and free wifi.

Close to public transport, Lake Geneva and the United Nations, this is a great low budget option for your stay in Geneva.

Stylish Lakeside Home by the Jet d’Eau | Best Airbnb in Geneva

Stylish Lakeside Home by the Jet d'Eau, Geneva Switzerland

Located in the city center, walking distance from Lake Geneva & Jet d’eau, this tidy apartment has one bedroom but they’ll accommodate extras. Enjoy this newly renovated and bright 4th-floor home with spacious rooms.

Make the most of the fantastic location of this apartment, a few blocks from the Saint Pierre cathedral. Visit the Italian specialty shop next door on your way out and picnic in the Parc de la Grange before you take yourself on a walking tour of the wonders of Geneva.

Old Town, Geneva

The Old Town of Geneva is the historical part of the city, dating back almost 2000 years. It is one of the largest old towns in Europe, and it is a real pleasure to walk around its streets on a sunny afternoon.

Paquis, Geneva

Paquis is a neighbourhood located close to the main train station and bordered by the lake. It is the most diverse area in Geneva, which is reflected in the numerous world food outlets you can find around there.

Plainpalais, Geneva

Plainpalais

Plainpalais is the neighbourhood located around the university and is as a consequence very lively and affordable. It is also the main nightlife centre in Geneva.

Carouge Geneva

Originally, Carouge was a separate town designed by Italian architects on the outskirts of Geneva. As a result, even though it has now been fully integrated into the city, Carouge has a completely different feel and vibe than the rest of Geneva.

Eaux Vives, Geneva

The Eaux Vives neighbourhood is located next to the Old Town, on the lakeshore. It is easy to find as it is home to the Jet d’Eau, the famous water fountain on the lake.

Geneva is one of Switzerland’s most booming cities. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, it boasts stunning natural beauty, surrounded by water and mountains.

There are loads of great things to do in Geneva , so you want to make sure you’re staying in the right area to make the most of your trip! When you check into your hotel, I recommend asking for the Geneva transit card. This allows you to use public transportation (including the Old Town Shuttle) to get around the city like a local.

The heart of the city is its Old Town . It’s full of luxury hotels, art galleries, traditional Swiss restaurants, museums, and pretty fountains in the streets. There’s plenty to explore here, making it the best place to stay if you’re visiting for the first time.

Looking out from the Schilthorn over to the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau of the Swiss Alps, Interlaken, Switzerland.

If you’re traveling on a budget, Paquis is a good option. It’s conveniently located for public transport and offers the best value accommodation in Geneva.

Plainpalais is the best place to stay if you want to be close to the nightlife. The area is next to the main university and is filled with a lively population.

Carouge is a vibrant and quirky area home to hip cafes and trendy bars. It’s got a different feel to the rest of the city, and is worth a visit even if you don’t stay there!

Located close to the Old Town, Eaux Vives offers peace and quiet while remaining close to all Geneva’s main sights . This makes it an ideal base for families staying in the city.

Now, let’s take a look at each of these areas in more detail. I’ve included my top accommodation and activity picks in each, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

1. Old Town – Where to Stay in Geneva for Your First Time

The Old Town of Geneva is the historical part of the city, dating back almost 2000 years. It’s one of the largest old towns in Europe and is a real pleasure to walk around. This area is also home to Place du Bourg, Geneva’s oldest square, which is the perfect place to stop and take in the atmosphere.

Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of Geneva and where to stay.

How many days do you need in Geneva?

2-3 days is heaps. Geneva is compact, so you can probably boost swiftly through, depending on your travel style, budget, and total trip time. Located between the Swiss Alps and France, you could even use it as a base for other day trips.

What are the best hotels to stay in Geneva?

Luxury hotels baby! If this is in your budget, heck, even if it’s not, Geneva is renowned for luxury hotels so make sure you check a few out. With the highest concentration of five star hotels in the country, you can at least get a glimpse of the glamour. Personal faves are; – Four Seasons – The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix – Beau-Rivage Genève

Where to stay in Geneva on the lake?

Eaux Vives is the best neighborhood if you want to stay on the lakeshore. There is even a man-made beach, built recently to ‘respond to social trends’. Scroll up to see my accommodation recommendations.

Are there hostels to stay in Geneva?

Geneva is expensive, but you could save some serious cash by staying at  City Hostel Geneva ! If you’re traveling in a group, it could be worth checking some deals on  Airbnb .

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Earplugs

Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.

nomatic_laundry_bag

Hanging Laundry Bag

Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.

Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

What’s the best map for Old Town Geneva?

I suggest you use this map , to find cool and unusual things to do during your stay in Geneva. Of course you could use your smart phone and dawdle around the usual tourist joints. If you’re looking for some hidden, quirky entertainment then dig a little deeper… Seek and you shall find!

Are there areas to avoid when staying in Geneva?

Not really. Serious crime is notoriously low in Switzerland but do keep your wits about you, pick pocketing does happen in tourist hot spots. Geneva does have a medium risk for petty crime so travel safely .

Where’s best to stay in Geneva on a budget?

Parquis! With beautiful gardens to lounge in, it’s an epicenter of public transport so the rest of the city is super accessible and the cost of accom is noticeably lower here. It’s also home to Geneva’s OG hostel .

You don’t want that Swiss watch going walkabout, do you? Regardless of the contents of your luggage, everybody needs good travel insurance .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Geneva Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 17, 2023

View of the jet fountain and the waterfront in Geneva, Switzerland on a bright and sunny summer day with mountains in the distance

Surrounded by Alpine Lake, Geneva is an expensive but underrated city in Switzerland that boasts tons of outdoor activities, has a gorgeous lake to swim in, and is surrounded by towering scenic mountains to explore.

Most travelers to Switzerland usually just visit Geneva for a day and then move on since it’s not a budget-friendly city. But I think the city is worth more time than that so stay at least one night so you can take it all in.

Geneva is super cosmopolitan thanks to the number of international organizations here and there is actually a lot to see and do. Visit all the famous international buildings (one of the four major United Nations buildings is here), admire the historic architecture and castles, tour interesting museums, and spend some time on the lake.

Sure, Geneva is one of the country’s most expensive and luxurious destinations but there are ways to visit on a budget so I don’t think you should rush your visit unless you are short on time.

This travel guide to Geneva can help you plan a budget-friendly stay and ensure you make the most out of your time here without going broke!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Geneva

United Nations building with two rows of flags from around the world in front, in Geneva, Switzerland

1. Visit the museums

Geneva has over 40 museums. You can find museums about natural history, IT, art, glasswork, science, the Olympics, photography, and more. If you’re visiting a lot of museums, get a city pass so you can save money on admissions.

2. Explore the Cathédrale St. Pierre

If you’re interested in Gothic architecture, this 12th-century cathedral is spectacular. Climb the 157 steps in the tower to get a breathtaking view of the city and surrounding countryside. Inside, its stained glass windows date back to a 19th-century restoration. Entry to the cathedral is free and it costs 7 CHF to climb the towers.

3. Walk through the Jardin Anglais

This is a small garden at the lake where people like to spend their lunch break. Here you’ll find the famous Flower Clock, built to honor the watchmaking that’s so famous in Switzerland. Since the Flower Clock was made in 1955, it’s become one of the most visited attractions in Geneva.

4. Tour the United Nations

Originally built to house the League of Nations, the UN can be seen via tours that are given on weekdays (and Saturdays in the summer). You see the magnificent Assembly Hall, the Council Chamber, the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations room, and more. The tour is 1 hour and cost 15 CHF.

5. Visit the Jet d’Eau

This large fountain is the city’s most famous monument. Located where Lake Geneva empties into the Rhône, it is visible throughout the whole city and even when flying overhead. It pumps 500 liters of water per second up 140 meters (460 feet) in the air and is lit up at night in March, April, September, and October.

Other Things to See and Do in Geneva

1. attend the caves ouvertes.

The “Day of Open Wineries” is a fun summer festival where the wineries in the region open their doors and invite everyone to visit and participate in wine tastings. Geneva is the 3rd-largest wine region in Switzerland with around 90 wineries. Satigny has several wineries and is about an hour bus ride from Geneva. There are also wineries along Lake Geneva. You can rent a bike to explore and take part but if you are planning on sampling a lot of wine you may want to take the free shuttles instead!

2. Visit Mont-Salève

Located just outside of the city, Mont-Salève is a mountain known for its wide range of outdoor activities. Spend a day rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, or cross-country skiing in the winter. To get to the top, there is a well-marked trail that takes around two hours. From there, you can continue on to Grand Salève or just stop and admire the view. The cable car costs 8 CHF (12 CHF return). If you crave an adrenaline rush, you can do a tandem paraglide from the mountain for around 180 CHF.

3. See the Reformation Wall

Located on the grounds of the University of Geneva, this monument serves to commemorate the main leaders of the Protestant Reformation in Europe – John Calvin, Guillaume Farel, Théodore de Bèze, and John Knox. Around 22% of the country is Protestant and the university itself was actually founded by Calvin. The wall’s unveiling was timed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Calvin’s birth. Inaugurated in 1909, it was built into the old fortification walls of Geneva.

4. Explore Carouge

Across the River Arve is the town of Carouge. This town is believed to have been built by King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia and the Duke of Savoy in the 18th-century. Many of the buildings here have a strong Italian resemblance, and some locals refer to this area as “little Italy.” Stop by Valmandin for a coffee and a quick break from exploring. If you have a sweet tooth, Philippe Pascoët is the place to go for decadent chocolates.

5. Enjoy the summer festivals

Summer offers a wide range of outdoor concerts and festivals in the city. In June, Fête de la Musique is a three-day music festival with free nonstop concerts, parades, activities, and stalls selling tasty snacks. The Geneva Street Food Festival is a must for foodies and happens every summer. From late August to early September, the La Batie-Festival of Geneva is a 16-day contemporary music and theatrical festival. Just book your accommodation in advance if you’re visiting for a festival as places fill up fast.

6. Relax at the Bains de Paquis

This swimming pool was built in the 1930s and is still a popular place to get a massage and unwind. The pool is built beside the lake and includes a diving board. In summer, you can also enjoy the hammam (they have a hammam reserved for women only too). Baths are open daily and cost 10 CHF. In winter, the outdoor pool is closed, but you can still use the sauna, hammam, and Turkish bath for 20 CHF.

7. Visit Temple de St-Gervais

This Protestant church is built on the foundations of a 4th-century sanctuary as well as a 10th-century Romanesque church. In the 16th-century during the Reformation (a religious reform movement that separated from the Roman Catholic Church), it became a Protestant church. During the late 20th-century, excavations revealed the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple and the first proof of human habitation in Geneva. Take time to admire the architecture and the beautiful early 20th-century stained glass windows. Admission is free but dress respectfully as it is a place of worship.

8. Go on a food tour

Food tours are one of the best ways to discover a city and learn more about the local cuisine and its history. Local Flavours offers a chocolate and Old Town history tour. You learn about the origins and history of chocolate in Switzerland, see the historic town center, and sample chocolates by local artisans. The tour lasts 3 hours and tickets cost 95 CHF.

9. Take a free walking tour

I start all my visits to a new city with a free walking tour. It’s the best way to get the lay of the land and see the highlights on a budget. Free Walk Geneva offers a couple of free walking tours of the city. Tours are typically 2-2.5 hours in length and are led by a local guide with a passion for the city, its history, and culture. If you’re more interested in the UN, WHO, and the World Trade Organization, try the International Geneva tour. While these tours are free, always remember to tip the guide at the end.

10. Visit the Botanical Gardens and Conservatory

Geneva’s botanical gardens date back to the early 20th century but its botany traditions are much older. With more than16,000 different species of plants, trees, and shrubs, they take you through various different areas including some greenhouses, a rockery, an arboretum, and a winter garden. They actually track each plant from planting to introduction to a collection. The Herbarium has around 6,000,000 specimens making it one of the world’s largest collections of plants and fungi. Unfortunately, it’s not often to the public often but there are a few open days each year where you can visit.

Geneva Travel Costs

People walking and biking through a large plaza in Geneva, Switzerland

Hostel prices – Dorm rooms start around 36 CHF per night for a dorm with 6-8 beds. Private rooms start at 70 CHF per night (but expect to pay closer to 90 CHF). Free Wi-Fi is standard and breakfast is usually included as well.

For those traveling with a tent, there are a few campsites on the outskirts of Geneva. Prices start at 9 CHF for a basic plot without electricity.

Budget hotel prices – Budget hotels start around 76 CHF per night. Most hotels offer free breakfast and free Wi-Fi is standard.

On Airbnb, you can find private rooms for 65-85 CHF per night. You can rent entire homes (usually studio apartments) starting around 90 CHF per night, although there’s a lot more inventory starting at 140 CHF and up.

Average cost of food – With strong French, German, and Italian influences, Swiss cuisine is a mix of meat and potato-based dishes along with plenty of local cheeses. Popular dishes include veal and mushrooms, fondue (with bread or potatoes), rösti (fried grated potatoes), and quiche. Naturally, Swiss cheese and chocolate should not be missed either. When it comes to breakfast, muesli is a go-to healthy choice.

One of the greatest things about Geneva is its diverse cuisine since it is such a hub of international activity thanks to the UN and international organizations in the city. Cheaper places can be found near the university and along Boulevard de Saint-Georges. Bars and cafés are the cheapest food option and an inexpensive restaurant should cost 25 CHF.

If you want to splash out, a mid-range restaurant costs about 60 CHF for a 3-course meal.

For traditional Swiss food such as fondue, schnitzel, älpler makkaroni, raclette, and goulasch you can expect to pay anywhere from 20-40 CHF. Auberge de Saviese, or Le Gruyérien are two good spots for traditional food.

Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 15 CHF for a combo meal. A large pizza is 15-21 CHF.

Beer is around 7 CHF while a latte/cappuccino is around 5.5 CHF.

If you cook your meals, expect to pay 100-120 CHF per week for groceries. This gets you basic staples like pasta, vegetables, chicken, and other basic foodstuffs. The major supermarkets are Migros, COOP, and Spar. COOP is the most expensive.

Backpacking Geneva Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Geneva, my suggested budget is 95 CHF per day. This covers staying in a hostel dorm, cooking al of your meals, taking public transit, limiting your drinking, and doing most free activities like enjoying nature and taking walking tours.

A mid-range budget of about 205 CHF per day covers a private Airbnb, eating out for a few meals, enjoying a few drinks, taking the occasional taxi to get around, and doing more paid tours and activities like visiting museums and going skiing.

For a “luxury” budget of 410 CHF or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, rent a car or take more taxis, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you spend more, some days you spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in CHF.

Geneva Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Geneva is probably the most expensive city in the country. This is a town of international organizations and diplomats so you’re going to be hard pressed to find a lot of deals. Here are a few ways to keep your budget intact in Geneva:

  • Get the Geneva Pass – With options for 1-3 days, this pass provides free transportation as well as free entrance into Geneva’s many museums. If you buy it online, you get a 10% discount. A one-day pass is 21 CHF, a two-day pass is 30 CHF, a three-day pass is 36 CHF.
  • Stay with a local – Couchsurfing is a service that lets travelers stay with locals for free. It was a lifesaver that allowed me to keep my costs down the most. Since a lot of travelers use this service, make your requests for hosts early.
  • Use free local transportation – By booking accommodation in Geneva (hotel, youth hostel, or a campsite), you are entitled to receive a Geneva Transport Card for free. This card allows you to use any public transportation (buses, trams, trains, and yellow taxi-boats) for free during the length of your stay. Just ask for it upon arrival at reception.
  • Don’t drink – Alcohol is not cheap here so keep the beers if you’re on a budget. If you must drink, stick to hostel bars where you can enjoy 2-for-1 happy hours and cheap.
  • Cook your own food – It’s not glamorous, but cooking your own meals will save you a fortune here!
  • Ride a bike – You can find bicycles for rent at most hostels. This is a very, very small town with very little traffic. If there’s no snow on the ground, this is the perfect place to cruise around on your bike.
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.
  • Take a free walking tour – In the warmer months, Free Walk Geneva offers a budget-friendly way to see the main sights and connect with a local who can answer all your questions. Just be sure to tip!

Where To Stay in Geneva

There are only a couple of hostels in Geneva, so consider booking early if you’re visiting during the peak summer months. Here are my suggested places to stay in Geneva:

  • City Hostel
  • Nyon Hostel
  • Geneva Hostel
  • MEININGER Geneve Centre Charmilles

How to Get Around Geneva

Buildings along the waterfront in Geneva, Switzerland

Public Transportation – Bus, train, and boat travel within Geneva are included in the travel card you receive. Otherwise, it is 2 CHF for a 3-stop journey, 3 CHF for a one-hour ticket that covers the tram, bus, boat, and rail, 8 CHF for a pass valid from 9am to midnight, and 10 CHF for a 24-hour pass. If you arrive in Geneva by plane, you can get an 80-minute bus ticket to use from the airport to the city for free.

As mentioned above, when you book into a hostel, hotel, or campsite in Geneva, you are entitled to a travel card that provides free public transportation in the city.

Taxi – Taxis here are expensive, starting at 6 CHF and going up 3 CHF per kilometer. Geneva is small so skip the taxis to save your budget.

Ridesharing – Uber is available in Geneva and, while cheaper than taxis, really isn’t necessary since the city is small and public transportation goes everywhere.

Bike rental – Between April-October you can use bikes from Genève Roule for up to 4 hours for 9 CHF. It’s 14 CHF for a full-day bike rental.

When to Go to Geneva

The best time to visit Geneva is between June-October when the weather is warm enough for exploring on foot, beaches and patios are open, and open-air markets and music festivals are in full swing. During this time, temperatures average of 23°C (72°F). This is the busiest time to visit Geneva, so expect prices to be higher.

In summer, don’t miss the Geneva Street Food Festival, and the Fête de la Musique in June. In July, the Paléo Festival in nearby Nyon is a huge music festival with indie rock bands and performers from around the world. August 1st is Swiss National Day, and the perfect time for watching folklore performances, alphorn blowing, yodeling, fireworks, and more! The Geneva International Film Festival takes place at the end of October, and into November.

Be sure to book your accommodation early if you visit during a festival.

In winter, temperatures in Geneva are usually just below freezing. While the festival and events calendar slows down a bit, there is still plenty to do. In November and December, the Christmas market is open and filled with Swiss treats, handicrafts, and mulled wines. Fête de l’Escalade takes place in December and commemorates the city’s escape from capture in 1602 with a torchlight parade and period clothing.

How to Stay Safe in Geneva

Geneva is quite safe, and the risk of violent crime is very low. That being said, petty theft and pick-pocketing can occur in high-traffic areas. Be vigilant in areas such as Lake Geneva’s promenade, Plainpalais, Mont Blanc Bridge, Cornavin train station, and other crowded areas.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though the standard precautions apply (don’t leave your drink unattended at the bar, don’t walk home alone at night if intoxicated, etc.)

While scams here are rare, if you’re worried about getting ripped off you can read about common travel scams to avoid here.

If you plan on hiking or spending some time skiing in the mountains, pay careful attention to weather reports. Heed avalanche warnings, and stay off the trails if you’re told to do so.

If you experience an emergency, dial 117 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Geneva is safe for tourist , but as in any big city, you should always use common sense, be aware of surrounding, keep an eye on your bag in crowded area, airports, railway stations, and avoid walking in Paquis area alone at night.

The best areas to stay in Geneva for first-timers and tourists are Old Town, Pâquis, Plainpalais, Carouge, Eaux Vives, Saint-Jean Charmilles. These are popular and safe places in the city, offering plenty of hotel options for all budget travelers.

Cité – Old town is the overall best area to stay in Geneva for first time visitors due to its central location and proximity to major attractions like St. Peter’s Cathedral, Maison Tavel, Old Arsenal, and Treille Promenade. It also offers a wide range of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops.

If this is your first visit, I recommend spend at least three days in Geneva , which is enough to see main sights, enjoy local food and drink, and get the sense of the city. If you have more days, you can take day trip to Lausanne, Swiss Riviera, and Annecy.

Geneva is also one of the most expensive cities to travel to. Accommodation is one of the largest travel costs with an average hotel room from CHF 100 per night and the cheapest accommodation option is hostels.

But don’t worry there are wide range of accommodation options for you to choose from, and if you do some research before you go, you will save some money.

Geneva International Airport is well-connected to major cities in Europe and around the world. It is located just 4 km northwest of the city center, making it a convenient entry point for travelers.

From the airport, you can easily reach the city center by public transportation, taxi, or rental car. The airport has its own train station located at the Airport Shopping Center, only 5 minutes walk from the Airport Terminal.

It is a 7 minute train ride from the airport train station to the Gare Cornavin , the main train station and transport hub in Geneva city center, where you can take a tram or train to anywhere. The train runs every 12 to 20 minutes from early morning until midnight.

The central train station is located within a walkable distance to the city center, and it is faster than bus or taxi, but you can also use buses in front of the Airport Terminal to Gare Routiere central bus station in the city center.

You can rent a car at car rental agents on the ground level outside of baggage claim. The taxi cost average between 35-45 CHF, and many hotels offer free shuttle from/to the airport.

Once in the city center, you can easily explore on foot, bicycles, and by its efficient and extensive public transportation system, including trams, buses, and boats.

Where to stay in Geneva for first time: 4 Safe areas

Where to stay in Geneva for first time

Finding where to stay in Geneva as a first-time visitor can be a daunting task. That’s why, in today’s article, I will help you to find safe places to stay in Geneva for first-timers and tourists.

I’ll provide you with my recommendation for the best and safest areas to stay in Geneva, along with a helpful map and areas to avoid. I’ll also share where I stayed in Geneva and suggest some of the best hotels in Geneva for all budgets.

Geneva is the capital of the Canton of Geneva and is situated at the western tip of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), Switzerland. Geneva is often referred to as the Capital of Peace and is known as a key player in international politics and humanitarian efforts.

The city is a global hub for diplomacy, home to  various international organizations including the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The city is served by Geneva International Airport, a major transportation hub, facilitating access to the city for international travelers.

Is Geneva safe to visit?

Yes, Geneva is generally a safe city with a low rate of serious crime. But, like any urban area, there is mugging, bag snatching and pickpocketing, so it is essential to take care of your belongings and be aware of your surroundings, especially at the railway stations and crowded areas.

Additionally, there is also the risk of terrorist attacks and demonstrations, so it is recommended to stay alert in crowds, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities. In general, with sensible precautions, Geneva is a safe and attractive destination for tourists.

Where to stay in Geneva for the first time?

  • Quai du Mont-Blanc

The best and safest areas to stay in Geneva for first-timers and tourists are Old Town, Eaux Vives, Quai du Mont-Blanc, and Carouge. While Geneva is generally safe, it’s wise to follow general safety tips, like keeping an eye on your belongings and being cautious at night, as you would in any city.

Old Town is the most popular area to stay in Geneva for first-time visitors as it is the historic heart of Geneva. Staying here will put you in close proximity to landmarks like St. Pierre Cathedral, the Reformation Wall, and the Museum of Art and History.

The Old Town has the highest range of accommodation options for all budgets in all of these areas. I’m sure you will find something that suits your needs and preferences.

Eaux Vives is a trendy and lively neighbourhood situated along the lakefront next to the Old Town. It is a peaceful area where you can find Parc de la Grange and the famous Jet d’Eau Fountain. There aren’t many choices of accommodations in this area though.

Quai du Mont-Blanc is the area that runs along the shore of Lake Geneva and offers beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. It’s also home to many upscale hotels and restaurants, making it a desirable location for visitors.

Carouge is a great base for the local atmosphere while still having access to the city centre and its attraction. This area has a Mediterranean feel with its colourful buildings, lively squares, and a variety of boutiques and cafes.

While Geneva is generally a safe city, there are some areas to avoid and exercise high caution when visiting, especially at night such as Paquis, Plainpalais, and Cornavin. They are not dangerous but it is best to stay vigilant.

Paquis is a popular area with lots of hotels due to its proximity to the central train station and its lively nightlife but it has a reputation is prostitution and drug-related activities.

During my trip to Geneva, I stayed in the Old Town at the mid-range citizenM Geneva . This is a great base to do sightseeing and shopping. Also close to public transport (tram/bus and ferry station) and Lake Geneva. Number 10 bus to the airport is just across the road.

Below is a map of the popular areas in Geneva for first-time travelers. You can scroll down to view the live map.

Map of the safe areas to stay in Geneva first time

Let’s get into the details of the recommended areas to stay in Geneva, especially for first-time visitors. I’ll provide you with some suggestions for the best places to stay in each area, catering to every budget.

All hotels in Geneva have been carefully selected by me, with guest review scores of at least 8.0 or higher at the time I chose them. If you don’t like my suggestions (perhaps they don’t suit your budget or preferences), you can click the “MORE HOTEL DEALS” button where you can choose your own hotel.

About Geneva

Geneva is a global capital, without actually being a capital — it’s not the capital of Switzerland, but it is home to the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, the World Bank and the Red Cross, among others. So it’s cosmopolitan and wealthy. But for most of us those things come second to Geneva being chocolate-box picturesque, on the shores of beautiful Lake Geneva, across which you can see the Swiss Alps. But it’s the global capital bit that impacts Geneva’s hotel offering most. There’s certainly plenty of hotels, and plenty of rooms, but it is known for being luxurious and expensive. But the second part of this paragraph, the bit about the views, makes it well worth every franc.

The city of Geneva is beautiful too, and its Old Town is one of the largest in Europe: a national heritage site of cobbled alleys, hidden courtyards and elegant, diminutive squares. This is an amazing place for small cafes, bars and antique shops, quirky museums and wonderful architecture. And boutique hotels and petit five star grande dames. Spreading out from the Old Town are the luxurious chocolatiers and jewellers, and the high end boutiques and restaurants, but many people are really only passing through, heading for the mountains.

In the summer the lake itself becomes a primary destination, all year it buzzes with yellow taxi boats, but come summer it’s scattered with craft from dawn until dusk.

So there’s not really a low season for Geneva’s hotels, which is partly why this city has a reputation for being expensive. And also why our recommendations for the best places to stay in Geneva could be so useful. If you’re at peace with the idea of paying a bit more then we can recommend some very special hotels in Geneva, but we can also recommend a few great value places to stay in Geneva, some excellent family-friendly hotels , and even some where you can bring your pet along too!

But first we have a quick review of which part of town you might like to stay in. If you already know skip to our recommendations for the best places to stay in Geneva below.

Where to Stay? Which neighbourhood?

  • Geneva’s Old Town is large, so there’s an even greater wealth of attractions and sights than you might expect. And plenty of choice when it comes to hotels too. The Old Town is a mesmerising place for a stroll, an alfresco meal or coffee and a bit of casual boutique shopping, but you’ll probably do that whether you stay in the Old Town or not. The architecture and warren of alleyways makes for the sort of city break many of us love. Place du Bourg de Four is the main square, around the corner from the Saint Pierre Cathedral, and these are great landmarks to be close to.
  • We recommend Eaux Vives as one of the best places to stay in Geneva for families. It’s very central, right beside the Old Town and the lake, and it’s got the largest park in Geneva, the Parc de la Grange. We also love it for the eclectic collection of boutiques, including some fantastic 20th century vintage shops, which go really well with the area’s 20th century look.
  • Palais des Nations is another good choice for families, it’s peaceful, close to another large park and the botanical gardens, and the United Nations headquarters. Some of the large international hotel chains have their impressive Geneva outposts here, and you’re only a few tram stops from the Old Town.
  • Plainpalais is the part of town close to the university, so it’s got a lively, young vibe. It’s great if you want to go out of an evening. It’s also got a great flea market: Geneva’s largest. Plainpalais is also a good place to look for accommodation if you’re looking for something a bit more affordable.
  • Geneva isn’t known for being affordable, but if you’re looking for something less pricey the Paquis area, which is close to the main station and Palais des Nations, as well as the lake, is another good option. Paquis is also one of the most multicultural parts of Geneva, and that’s well reflected by the variety of cuisine you can find in the cafes, bars and restaurants here.
  • Carouge started off as a separate town on the outskirts of Geneva, and as the city grew it was engulfed, but despite that it still has its own look and feel. It was designed by Italian architects, which explains the look, but the feel probably comes from the cool crowd who now live here. Carouge is now the sort of place with artisan cafes and cool, new bars popping up all the time, and a number of galleries and artist studios, but it still has a fantastic farmer’s market too, so you can see why it’s a great place to live, and probably one of the best places to stay in Geneva if you want to try and experience the Geneva the locals do.

Don't forget that the city is a busy year-round destination, so if you want to be sure of a bed in one of the best places to stay in Geneva, get organised and book well ahead.

The Best Places to Stay in Geneva

For a lake view.

  • The Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues is a grande dame of Geneva, sitting elegantly against the waterfront. Its 115 rooms and suites range from classically elegant to palatial, decorated in a riot of brocade and toile de jouy in soft blues and greens, and the best of them have private balconies as well as incredible lake views. There’s a rooftop pool too, with a terrace, and another terrace associated with the bar, which is definitely a place to see and be seen.
  • The Hotel Restaurant du Parc des Eaux Vives is an elegant 16th century manor right beside the Parc de la Grange, on the opposite side from the Old Town, and has beautiful lake views you can enjoy through the trees of its beautifully manicured gardens. There are just seven suites, designed like mini-apartments. The hotel’s impressive Swiss restaurant is worth a visit even if you’re not staying here.

For a City Break

  • The Hôtel Longemalle is an elegant Belle Epoque building in a beautiful Old Town spot just a few blocks from the lake — the location is really unbeatable, especially when you consider the hotel’s roof terraces and the views from the top floors. There are 58 rooms and suites inside, decorated with a nod to the Baroque, with chandeliers hung from high ceilings, huge mirrors, mahogany woodwork, period furniture and some impressive murals. There’s no restaurant, but they do serve an impressive buffet breakfast on the terrace, or in the dining room.
  • The Hotel D'allèves is a charming, 46 room property close to the basilica, in the heart of Geneva. The building dates from the 18th century, and has plenty of charm and original features, but the decor is contemporary, with rooms in a variety of styles.
  • A hotel inspired by Eastern design isn’t going to suit everyone coming to Geneva, but we’re also recommending the Eastwest Hotel for its size and for its facilities. There’s a small gym and sauna and a fusion restaurant which spills out into a simple courtyard. There are just 41 rooms and suites.
  • The Hotel Tiffany is a chic and luxurious Art Nouveau property in a central spot, with 65 elegant rooms decorated in warm colours and adorned with contemporary art. The restaurant is well known, and well regarded, and the bar is glamorous.
  • 9Hotel Paquis is a smart, three star hotel in the Paquis area, close to the main station and the United Nations buildings, so it’s advertised as a business hotel, and certainly has lots of great facilities, but it’s quite stylish too, with luxurious bathrooms and great views from some of the rooms. The larger suites have their own kitchenettes too. And there’s an indoor pool and small spa.

For a romantic stay

  • The Hotel de la Cigogne is a a beautiful, beautifully appointed, family-owned hotel in the heart of the Old Town. Its 52 spacious rooms and suites are all individually decorated with carefully chosen antiques, and some really beautiful furniture and interesting art. The romantic restaurant is panelled with mahogany, to set the intimate, Belle Epoque tone.
  • Les Armures is better known for its restaurant, the Restaurant Les Armures, which like the hotel, is located in a fantastic Old Town spot right by the cathedral. The restaurant, which predates the hotel, is a local landmark, serving quintessentially Swiss cuisine — think raclettes and fondue galore. Upstairs are 32 rooms and suites, decorated with a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings and details. They’re not big, but there’s a warm atmosphere and the location is unbeatable.
  • The Hotel D’angleterre is an elegant five-star hotel in an enviable location by the lake, overlooking the Jet d’Eau from the opposite side of the water. From its many-windowed exterior you’d think this was a large hotel, but it has just 45 rooms and suites, individually, and opulently, decorated with all sorts of beautiful, and varied, antiques and interesting treasures. This is the sort of hotel which offers a range of dining choices, including private dining, and there’s a glamorous bar for the evenings, and afternoon tea for the afternoons. Luxurious and very memorable.

Geneva’s Best Family Friendly Hotels

  • Small and private feeling, with just three contemporary rooms, Le Jour et La Nuit B&B is a stylish spot outside the centre of Geneva. This is a good spot for families or groups, what with the communal kitchen, garden, and terrace with a barbecue, that makes it easy to feel at home. Though there are a number of good restaurants nearby so there’s no need to cook unless you want to.
  • The Edelweiss Hotel is a quintessentially Swiss hotel and restaurant, like a Swiss chalet transported to the centre of town, complete with fondue restaurant and nightly yodelling. Think wood-lined rooms, fireplaces, and long, alpine horns mounted to the walls. There are family rooms and babysitting services offered, and let’s be frank, your kids are probably going to love it.
  • Relatively close to the main train station, the Hotel Kipling is a bright, modern, 62 room hotel —with dashes of exotic influences to the decor. Some of the rooms have kitchenettes and Nespresso machines, and kids get breakfast for free. The hotel also arranges free use of public transport for guests, and you’re just eight minutes walk from the lake and the beach. It’s great value too.
  • La Réserve is an ultra-luxurious but family-friendly hotel in a beautiful landscaped park in Bellevue, along the lake from Geneva. There are 102 rooms and suites, with a warm and welcoming style, plus a choice of resort-style pools, a heavenly spa, tennis courts, a kid’s games room and plenty to do.

For great Value

  • Chez Maman Hotel and Restaurant is a 20th century inn in a hip part of town, close to shops and restaurants. There are only 11 rooms, all of them simply styled in a pale grey colour palette, with exposed beams on the ceiling, large windows and wood floors. There’s a garden too, with lovely places to sit and enjoy a tipple and tapas from the trendy bar.
  • The Auberge de Confignon is a gastronomic auberge tucked away in a village just above Geneva. The setting and mountain views are spectacular, but the food has the reputation. There are 14 simple, comfortable rooms.
  • Modern, stylish and affordable, La Cour des Augustins is nestled in between the 19th century architecture of Geneva’s historic centre, but inside it’s minimalist, with pop art adorned walls. There are 40 rooms and suites, family-sized ones too, and a spa.

Some of the Best Hotels Around Geneva

  • Domaine de Chateauvieux is a lovingly restored former winery in amongst the vineyards of the valleys surrounding Geneva. There’s plenty of rustic charm to the 12 rooms, and views of the Rhone River and the Jura Mountains. As well as having an impressive wine list, the restaurant has also been awarded two Michelin stars, and is known for its inventive cuisine.

Travel Information

  • Want to fly to Geneva?
  • Geneva Airport is just four kilometres from the centre of town and easily reached by bus, train, taxi or shuttle. And the train transfer is free to air passengers, and only takes about six minutes to the central station. A taxi will take you around 25minutes, depending on which of our recommendations for the best places to stay in Geneva you choose.
  • If you want to hire a car - which we advise if you’re staying in Geneva and you want to see more of the lake and the alps - we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars .
  • Lots of people travel through Geneva to get to local ski resorts, so winter is almost as busy here as summer, which, as with much of Europe, is the busiest time for visitors. The summers here by the lake are sunny and dry, spring is very pretty, but there are still overnight frosts in April. Autumn cools down quickly, but starts quite comfortably in September, and winter is cold and beautiful, what with the backdrop of snow-covered mountains.
