Strawberry Fields Central Park

strawberry field tours

This post will help you locate Strawberry Fields in Central Park, a.k.a., the John Lennon Memorial.

The area is shaded by elm trees and is punctuated by outcroppings of Manhattan schist.

Yoko Ono, in addition to helping with the plans, donated over a million dollars for the landscaping and maintenance of the area.

Strawberry Fields NYC

Strawberry Fields in New York City was named for the popular Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

The song was inspired by the childhood memories of John Lennon, who used to play in the garden of a Salvation Army children’s home called Strawberry Field.

This small, 2.5-acre section of the park draws millions of visitors annually and is a living memorial to singer, songwriter and peace activist John Lennon.

It was dedicated on October 9, 1985, in honor of what would have been John Lennon’s 45th birthday.

The location was chosen due to its proximity to Lennon’s NYC home, The Dakota Apartments, which are just across Central Park West.

Dakota Apartments and Strawberry Fields

There is a plaque embedded in one of the boulders along the pathway leading to the mosaic. It lists the 121 countries that endorse Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace.

There is no cost to visit the memorial and it's one of the most visited free attractions in NYC .

Both Strawberry Fields and the Imagine Mosaic are included in our free Central Park Audio Tour for your smartphone.

We cover Strawberry Fields in our pay-what-you-like Central Park walking tours or the Central Park Bike Tours .

The nearest subway stations are the B and C trains at 72 nd Street. The station exit is directly across the street from the entrance to Strawberry Fields and Central Park.

You could also arrive via the 1, 2, or 3 trains at 72 nd Street, which is approximately a 7-minute walk.

Please use this Google map link for directions to Strawberry Fields from anywhere in the NYC region.

How to get to Strawberry Fields Central Park

THE IMAGINE MOSAIC

One of the focal points of the park is the “ Imagine ” mosaic, another tribute to John Lennon.

This mosaic was done by Italian artists and was a gift from the city of Naples.

The inscription in the center of the mosaic, “Imagine,” is the title of what is arguably Lennon’s best-known solo work.

Strawberry Fields New York

Millions of people visit the memorial daily and the mosaic is decorated many days out of the year, with flowers, candles, and other items.

People often gather at the mosaic in honor of both Lennon’s birthday (October 9) and the anniversary of his death (December 8).

There is often singing until well into the night on these days.

Gary dos Santos was known for many years as The Mayor of Strawberry Fields. For almost twenty years he decorated the mosaic daily, usually using flowers to form a peace symbol.

His income came from visitor’s tips, and he greeted people with a monologue about who he was and some information on John Lennon.

He was often accompanied by both his girlfriend and his dog, Mary Jane.

Dos Santos passed away on November 25 th , 2013, and while many musicians gather at the memorial to play and entertain visitors, no one has become a permanent fixture the way Dos Santos was.

Just So You Know :

Strawberry Fields is a designated Quiet Zone of Central Park.

That means that rollerblading and biking are prohibited, along with dogs (on the lawns), and music may only be listened to with headphones. No sports may be played on the lawns.

Strawberry Fields

Strawberry Fields

The Strawberry Fields Central Park Memorial is located on 2.5 acres in Central Park between 71st and 74th Streets. It is dedicated to singer-songwriter, John Lennon, and opened on October 9th, 1995, on what would have been his 45th birthday.

This particular part of Central Park was chosen because John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono lived in the Dakota Apartments adjacent to this section of the park (Yoko Ono still lives in Dakota). It was at these apartments where John Lennon was shot dead outside this building.

The title of this memorial comes from the Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever”. The memorial section of the park is shaped like a teardrop and its upkeep is provided by a million-dollar endowment from Yoko Ono. There is a black and white circular tile mosaic in the center of the memorial with the words “Imagine” in the center. Nearby there is a bronze plaque that names over 120 countries that donated money for the upkeep and maintenance of the plants and flowers around the park as well the Strawberry Fields Garden of Peace. Visitors, please note that this area is designated as a “quiet zone.”

Strawberry fields.

During our stop at The Dakota, no tour would be complete without a visit to one of the city’s most peaceful and tranquil islands of calm, Strawberry Fields.

Located across the street from the scene of John Lennon’s untimely demise, Strawberry Fields is a beautiful 2.5 acre park located just inside of Central Park.

Strawberry Fields in Central Park

Opened on John Lennon’s 45th birthday, Oct.9, 1985, this idyllic oasis offers a calm respite from the rigors of Manhattan.

Named after the famous Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever” penned in 1967 by Lennon, this international garden of peace features the plantings of 121 nations. While many search in vain for strawberry plants here, the fact is that Strawberry Fields was the name of an orphanage in Liverpool where John spent a lot of time hanging out with other lads.

This tear-drop-shaped parcel of land is shaded by stately American elms that gently sway down curving paths amidst a profusion of shrubs, bountiful flowerbeds and isolated groves of trees. Beautifully maintained yet naturalistic, this free-flowing park landscape was designed by landscape architect Bruce Kelly. The site was chosen by John’s wife, Yoko Ono, as this was one of their favorite sections of the city.

Perhaps the most notable element in the park is the IMAGINE mosaic, a gift from the city of Naples. Fashioned by Italian craftsmen, this black-and-white design is based on a mosaic found in Pompeii. Named after the popular song written by Lennon, this is the only specific tribute made to the musician.

Most days one can find a remembrance left behind, whether in the form of flowers, flickering candles, a poem, sketches, or old photographs. And sometimes one can still partake of the gentle sounds of a Lennon song played from a nearby bench.

Customer Reviews

Great Walk in Central Park

"Chris was a terrific guide on our two-hour walking tour of Central Park. They keep the groups small, so it was easy to hear him and ask questions. He was very knowledgeable about the park and the surrounding area. He also had a great sense of humor - maybe because he is also a stand-up comedian at night. Previously we had never actually been IN Central Park - just around it often. We couldn't believe how removed from the city we felt and how peaceful and calm our walk was. I think walking is the best way to appreciate all the park has to offer."

Walking tour with Tom

"During our two-hour walking tour with super guide Tom we learned more about the history of the park than probably more than 80% of New Yorkers. The park is wonderful and would be enjoyable just walking by yourself. However, the historical information added by Tom made it extra special. Would highly recommend this leisurely walk of the southern part of Central Park."

Great Tour - Great Guide

"Took a two-hour walking tour of the southern half of Central Park. I was really lucky as I was the only person, so got a personal tour. Adam, my tour guide, was great. He supplemented the tour with photos on his I-pad which gave before and after images of the park. The route encompassed many interesting aspects of the park and was punctuated with loads of history. Highly recommended!"

And because the Bay Area has the perfect climate for all kinds of berries to thrive in, you’ll find many U Pick strawberry farms across Contra Costa, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties.

Why visit just one organic strawberry farm when you can use this list of the Bay Area’s best pick-your-own berries for a perfect day of visiting multiple farms with friends or your family?

Founded in 1983 by Jim Cochran, Swanton Berry Farm was the first organic strawberry farm in California.

Today, the farm is a prime spot for strawberry picking in Half Moon Bay .

It remains a beloved producer of farm-fresh goods distributed to local farmers’ markets throughout the central and northern California coast.

Swanton Berry Farm is open year-round, but u-picking is only available from April or May until around August . Visitors can buy already-packed strawberries or pick their own at the farm.

After the strawberry season, you can still enjoy the farm’s produce with their yummy jam, strawberry shortcake, and organic pies baked right on the property.

You can reach the farm by driving south from Half Moon Bay, then stopping just past Ano Nuevo State Park, and the farm’s entrance is on the left side.

During the organic strawberry picking season (from April to May), the farm operates only on the weekends.

Many guests swear by the size of the strawberries here as they are supposedly bigger than the berries at their sister farm stand in Davenport.

Call before visiting to ensure u-pick is available, as they adapt the open days to the amount of ripe fruit in the field.

  • 🍓U-Pick Fruits: Strawberries
  • 💎Other Offerings: Artichokes, pumpkins, and kiwis

  • ON-SITE AMENITIES: Some farms have in-house cafes where you can sample their baked goods and drinks.

Almost all the farms have public bathrooms, but a few don’t so call before you arrive.

What to Bring for Strawberry Picking in the Bay Area

picking strawberries in the bay area

Bring cash when you visit any farm. Some might accept credit cards, but bringing some cash with you is always a safe bet.

Farms also have other items available for sale, including homemade strawberry jams to other farm-fresh goods like honey, eggs, or herbs you might also like buying.

After all, purchasing products is the best way to support these amazing local farmers.

Your entire stay at the farm will most likely be under the sun, so make sure to lather up with plenty of this sunscreen before visiting the farm.

You may experience some of the famous Bay Area fog during your visit, but you will most likely spend the day under the sun.

Sunscreen might not be enough, especially if you are scheduled to pick strawberries in the heat of the summer.

Wear a sun hat to keep the sun out of your face while picking fruit.

  • BUCKET OR BASKET

Some farms sell buckets, while others charge for plastic bags. To save money, check the farm to see if you can bring your own bucket. Using your basket or bucket is also eco-friendly.

Some farms require that you use their containers for the purpose of weighing the fruit accurately.

If the You Pick Strawberry Farm you decide to visit is far from your home, pack an ice chest or cooler with you.

The ice chest can serve as your strawberry storage so that the fruits of your labor don’t bake in the car if you make a second stop at a farm.

Practical Tips for Strawberry Picking in the Bay Area

three strawberries attached to the plant

  • Red means ripe

Unlike bananas and other fruits that still ripen after harvest, berries don’t ripen after they’ve been picked .

Fortunately, it’s super easy to find ripe strawberries. Just skip the yellow and green ones, and look for red strawberries.

You’d be surprised how busy farms can be, especially during strawberry season.

If you want to pick strawberries, go to the farm early, as it will have fewer crowds as soon as the farm opens its gates.

Note that some farms only allow a limited amount of berries to harvest daily. Getting to the farm early also means you will enjoy first dibs on the ripest fruit.

  • Call to check in case reservations are needed

Some farms may require visitors to make reservations to ensure their strawberries are spread out to guests.

Check the farm websites for reservation forms and fill them out. If there’s no online reservation, simply call the farm and ask about reservations.

  • Dress appropriately

When visiting any farm, wear closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty as you will be walking in the soil-covered rows between the strawberry plants.

You should also wear comfortable clothes as you will need to be able to squat down to pick the berries.

Strawberry farms in the Bay Area can get a little chilly in the early morning and windy in the afternoon, so bring a layer just in case.

  • Dogs are not allowed on the fields

Most farms do not allow dogs to go fruit picking with you as people eat the strawberries right from the plants, and our four-legged friends are not the most hygienic.

Dogs LOVE strawberries but are also unaware of where they step, and they can damage the crops.

  • Be respectful of the property

Farm owners and crew are friendly and welcoming to guests.

There aren’t too many rules to follow, but basic etiquette dictates limiting your sampling of berries while on the field. If you touch a piece of fruit, take it. Also, don’t smoke while in the fields.

UC Davis Ends Strawberry Licensing Agreements With Eurosemillas

The university will continue to work with nurseries and growers in 20-plus affected international markets.

  • by Bill Kisliuk
  • May 21, 2024

strawberries

The University of California, Davis, a leader in the development of world-class strawberry varieties for the California and global markets, is terminating all strawberry licensing agreements with Eurosemillas S.A., which has been a master licensee for older UC Davis strawberry varieties in countries outside of the United States.

The decision to terminate the UC Davis Public Strawberry Breeding Program licensing agreements with Eurosemillas does not come lightly. The University of California provided due notice to Eurosemillas of the university’s position that Eurosemillas had defaulted on its agreements, and the university’s concerns were not addressed.

The university is taking steps to provide stability for nurseries and fruit growers during this transition period, and ensure continued access to older UC Davis strawberry varieties. Newer UC Davis strawberry varieties continue to be available throughout the world per licensing agreements with other partners, Fresa Fortaleza and Global Plant Genetics.

“The UC Davis Public Strawberry Breeding Program has been a huge success for consumers, growers, California’s agricultural economy and the global strawberry market,” said Helene Dillard, dean of the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “The step the university is taking today is necessary to support our growers and our program, and to ensure the scientific breakthroughs at UC Davis and resources provided by the state of California are cared for, managed and marketed properly.”

UC Davis holds active patents on 20 strawberry varieties, all of which have been licensed to nurseries to sell to strawberry growers.

The university directly licenses strawberry varieties to California nurseries, offering state strawberry growers exclusive access to new varieties for two years and reduced royalty rates to give them a competitive advantage. The university also directly licenses varieties elsewhere in the United States and Canada.

In markets outside North America, the university contracts with master licensees to work with nurseries, farmers and growers. International markets where UC Davis strawberry varieties are grown include the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay; China; Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Turkey; South Africa; Canada; New Zealand and Australia.

UC has been and will continue to be vigilant about supporting the UC Davis Public Strawberry Breeding Program and honoring its obligations to farmers and growers to ensure access to high-quality, affordable varieties in California and elsewhere. As a public research institution, UC diligently protects and promotes its intellectual property to maximize public value, support thriving agricultural economies and ensure reinvestment in university research and education.

About the UC Davis Public Strawberry Breeding Program

Strawberry varieties developed at UC Davis produce about 60% of all strawberries consumed worldwide.

Varieties developed at UC Davis have made California a leading producer, with the state growing more than 87% of North American strawberries.

The UC Davis Public Strawberry Breeding Program is funded primarily by revenue from licensing strawberry varieties. Licensing funds also support patent expenses, campus inventors, the UC Office of the President and UC Davis.

Annually, the University of California generally receives between $8 million and $9 million in licensing revenue from the strawberry breeding program.

UC Davis develops strawberry varieties for greater yield, disease resistance, flavor, adaptation to different growing conditions and other positive characteristics.

UC Davis breeders work collaboratively with industry leaders to produce fruit that meets the market demand and address the needs of growers.

The program also trains students and postdoctoral researchers to be leaders in this vital industry.

The Beatles' 'Love' closes July 6. Why Ringo Starr says 'it’s worth seeing' while you can

strawberry field tours

For 18 years, all Cirque du Soleil needed was "Love."

But in a few weeks, the kaleidoscopic fever dream known as “The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil” will go dark on the Las Vegas Strip.

No more skate ramps and curlicue airborne tricks to imbue “Help!” with the joviality to match the music (if not the lyrics).

No more graceful trapeze routines to the heart-fluttering “Something.”

No more venue-sized bedsheet to appear out of nowhere, flap over the heads of the audience and get sucked into the vortex of the stage while the mashup of “Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows” envelops your eardrums, inviting striking sensory overload.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The end of Cirque’s groundbreaking production – it was the first to feature all prerecorded music and fixate on a singular music act – is July 6 . A private performance will take place July 7, and considering the opening of “Love” on June 30, 2006 attracted Paul McCartney , Ringo Starr, Julian Lennon, Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison and Dhani Harrison among other VIPs, odds for prestigious sightings are high.

Endings are emotionally turbulent, and for the cast, crew, creative team and fans of “Love,” this finale triggers an ache.

“To this day when I hear a Beatles song, my heart goes directly to the show,” said Kati Renaud, senior artistic director at Cirque du Soleil who has worked with “Love” for the majority of its nearly two-decade run. “I see the scenes and the dancers and the choreography. (Original director and “Love” writer) Dominic (Champagne) would say, this is a rock ‘n’ roll poem and it’s this beautiful marriage of rock and poetry.”

Why is The Beatles’ ‘Love’ closing in Las Vegas?

Rumblings of the shuttering of “Love” started two summers ago when MGM Resorts International offloaded The Mirage – home to the show and its $100 million custom-built, sonically superior 2,013-seat theater – to Hard Rock International .

Changes typically accompany acquisitions and “Love,” never the top ticket seller among Cirque’s Las Vegas ecosystem of six shows despite its devoted base, was ripe for axing.

“The Hard Rock, you would think would keep the show (because of the music connection). But no,” said Beatles icon Ringo Starr in a recent interview with USA TODAY . “Honestly, we’ve had a good run.”

The transformation from The Mirage to Hard Rock will begin July 17, when the casino-resort closes. No reservations are being accepted after July 14. The Hard Rock Las Vegas, including a 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel tower, is expected to open in spring 2027.

Officials at the Hard Rock declined to comment on the closure of “Love” or future entertainment plans when contacted by USA TODAY.

The legacy of The Beatles’ ‘Love’

A Grammy Award-winning soundtrack of Beatles songs intricately knitted by Giles Martin is the spine of the colorfully chaotic production. Not only was “Love” the first Cirque show to utilize prerecorded music but it spawned other music-based Cirque productions.

“Viva Elvis” closed in 2012 at Aria Resort & Casino after a disappointing two-year run, but “Michael Jackson ONE,” with its spiffy choreography and another heady catalog, continues to thrive at Mandalay Bay after 11 years.

“Learning to produce a show with no live music was a new world for the artistic team of Cirque,” said Renaud. “This was definitely new territory for us and Giles played such an integral part in finding solutions and being such an advocate.”

Martin told USA TODAY in 2022 that when he first began work on the soundtrack to “Love” at Abbey Road Studios in the mid-2000s, “I was vilified by people there. They’re going ‘What is George Martin’s son doing, chopping up Beatles songs?’ The whole idea sounds ridiculous, especially if you’re a purist.”

But even the most devout Beatles fanatic had to acknowledge the magic of hearing some of the band’s most familiar pieces dissected and reconstructed for “Love,” starting with the chilling harmonizing on the opening “Because” to the snippets of “In My Life” and “Penny Lane” embedded in the psychedelic bubble-isciousness during “Strawberry Fields Forever” to the jaw-dropping mashup of “Drive My Car,” “The Word” and “What You’re Doing.”

In all, the show and soundtrack contain elements from 130 Beatles recordings.

Tweaks were continual throughout the show’s existence. A facelift took place in 2016 for its decade anniversary and the nearly 17-month pandemic-related shutdown allowed for some other modifications before "Love" reopened in August 2021.

The conclusion of the Cirque show also ends the only live production anywhere in the world licensed by The Beatles’ parent company, Apple Corps.

Is there a future for The Beatles’ ‘Love’?

A modified “Love,” perhaps as a touring production or at another permanent location, has been vaguely discussed, but nothing is imminent.

“To recreate something as it was created isn’t realistic, but to be inspired by it is definitely something Cirque thrives on ,” Renaud said. “Because of The Beatles’ music aspect of it, there is something quite popular and inviting in any discussions (about the show’s future).”

Starr also hopes that “Love” might live on in another form, but isn’t bullish.

“It may happen again. But I’m making this up – there are no rumors going on. But it’s worth seeing,” he said. “We did keep the business open all this time.”

The “Love” cast of 60 includes longtimers Jimmie Cervera (as the distinctively dome-topped Dr. Robert) and Eugen Brim (as the wild-haired Father McKenzie), who left the production in 2016 but returned in February to reprise his role until the show is buried along with its name, as Eleanor Rigby would appreciate.

They and other "Love" employees have been meeting with Cirque brass to try to find other places in the company to fit their unique talents, including auditions for the “Love” dancers to potentially slide into the “Michael Jackson ONE” team, said Renaud.

As for those who might still be uncertain about whether or not to catch the show as its final dates tick down, Renaud has some motivating words.

“Someone who knows a little about Cirque who doesn’t care for Beatles music will come and see it because it’s a classic Cirque experience,” she said. “For those who are maybe avid Beatles fans, they will be thrilled because of how Giles has remastered the music and will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek moments only Beatles fans will recognize. Either group will be touched emotionally.”
