P0500 Code(Speed Sensor), Issues Unresolved - Advice Appreciated...

Ive got a 96' 7.3 PS that is new to me - When I bought it the guy told me it had a new VSS (vehicle speed sensor) installed - It runs great, shifts great, until seemingly randomly, it revs up in rpms and wont shift (mostly in low gears) until it suddenly slams into gear (very hard shift) - overdrive light comes on flashing -stop and go traffic especially, and especially when I slow down without the brakes, and then go to accelerate - shut the vehicle off and restart - I then drove it 600 miles towing a load and it never did it once - Took it to our diesel mechanic, very reliable and good - pulled the code P0500 - bad vehicle speed sensor - He replaced and triple checked all the wiring, the VSS itself (brand new), and cleaned all the grounds well, pulled the cover on the rear diff and inspected the teeth... Still did it - He then installed a loaner PCM, known to be good (next diagnostic test before sending mine off to be rebuilt)- the code says it can only be the wiring/vss/pcm - picked it up yesterday with the loaner PCM and sure enough, after driving it for 20 minutes, same symptoms... If anyone has ever gone down this road or has advice, I'd appreciate it... New to diesels, spent almost 9k$ for the truck and I'm almost 4k$ into shop time (new rear disc brake kit, fuel pump, fluids checked and serviced, rear diff inspected and serviced, windshield replaced, new double u-joint on driveline) - Feeling discouraged... Mechanic said if this PCM loan doesn't fix it, he's out of ideas... Thanks in advance - C

I think the PCM gets input from the PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module ... PSOM gets input from VSS), so don't discount a problem with it. Cheers!

INdeed - Now that the wiring/VSS/and PCM have been addressed, how does one go about testing the PSOM??  

Might have to find a place to do that. If you do take it out, inspect the flexible "circuit board" on the back for irregularities. Cheers!

Don't forget that a wire that is broken inside the insulation is an intermittent connection. Did you trace the wires all the way from the VSS? Did you replace the vss pigtail in case it was broken inside? You replaced the VSS twice yet the problem remains. You replaced the PCM. Now chase the wiring and the PSOM.

22 years ago when I bought my truck, I replaced the speed sensor also. (On rear diff, I think.) I don't remember what code/symptom motivated this. But the problem turned out that my transmission needed to be rebuilt. One of the symptoms I do remember is the flashing OD light. That means the transmission has set a code. Good luck figuring it out and resolving it.  

Thanks for the info there Patrick... The truck is going back into the shop this morning to have the lonaer PCM removed and my old one re-installed... Mechanic, who has the best reputation in town for these trucks, says he's triple checked the wiring from the VSS forward, and all grounds... Ran into a buddy who's also pretty good with 7.3s and he said to check the wires ontop of the transmission; some heat guard that the wires run over and they can rub there - also said to check passenger side door wiring, where they pass through (inside the boot) - Have yet to do that, and pretty hard to get to those wires on the tranny to see what kind of shape they're in - anyone have any experience with these two potential problem makers?? Did I mention that it tends to happen after things heat up, or on a real hot day (which where we are in Alaska is maybe 70F) - Doesn't seem to happen from a cold start until about 15 or 20 minutes into driving...

Looking at the wires is a waste of time. A wire can break inside the insulation and cause problems. Are you stripping off ALL of the insulation to see if the wire is intact? You need to check the wires electrically to see if there is continuity from end to end and if there is a short to power or a short to ground.  

Good point, and sounds like a real pain! Vss to pcm is triple checked and confident it’s not the issue- however, latest update came yesterday when the mechanic called a trusted transmission shop in Anchorage and described the symptoms and the list done to it so far- the tranny shop said unequivocally, it is the PSOM- apparently they have seen this issue with the OBSs many times - it is currently being removed and will get sent off to Seattle for a rebuild (the PSOM)- will let you know how it goes in a week or two - Hoping all this is worth it for a good running, low mileage OBS...  

PSOM rebuilt and reinstalled, problem solved!

Could be anything - faulty board connection, a sloppy rebuild, or a non-PSOM problem. I suggest removing the PSOM yourself and inspect the 12-pin connector. If it looks alright, spray it with DeOxit D5 and re-assemble. Does the problem go away again? I found several YouTube videos on the PSOM. Maybe one of them will spark an idea. One video says that there are 3 cluster models: 92-93, 94-95, and 96-97; BUT the PSOM among all years is interchangeable. So you could probably score another PSOM at a junkyard at low cost. Or you can find them on eBay. I don't know, just throwing out ideas.  

Here's an interesting angle I found on YouTube. This guy had similar a problem to yours and fixed it by reducing the gap from the speed sensor to the differential tone ring to less than 1/1000". An oscilloscope might be a helpful diagnostic tool. Reducing the gap probably strengthened the speed sensor signal. Why was it weak to begin with? Wiring/connector fault? Bad sensor? Whatever it was, the stronger signal helped to overcome it. A scope could trace the signal and help you figure out where the signal is being degraded. To return to my previous comment, I would find every connector from the speed sensor to the PSOM and spray them all down with DeOxit D5. This might fix the whole problem.  

Update: One out of the 20 solders on the rebuild was faulty - Rebuilt the rebuild and all is working good - RESOLVED - Now on to the no crank issue (seperate, and will start seperate thread) - Thanks for all the help on here, great site...

my truck has an intermittent problem. occasionally when i first start it and drive the O/D light flashes and the speedo is dead. if i turn the key of and on again while moving the light goes off and the speedo jumps to life. i keep getting a P0500 VSS malfunction code. i have changed the differential sensor as well as the 2 on the transmission but the problem persists. the connections at the sensors seem to be clean and tight. i am to understand that i might have a bad wire or connection but i can't find anything wrong. does anybody know where the other end of the wire loom plugs in? i would assume it's toward the front somewhere. that's the only thing i haven't been able to check yet. somewhere i also read that low trans fluid could contribute to this problem but it's ok. would a trans service fix it? in reading the various forums i've come to understand that this problem is not uncommon in fact my excursion had the same issue but the differential sensor fixed it. thanks in advance for the help, john

Proper Diagnostic Routines....by someone that can find their a$$ with both hands. The speed signal comes from the ABS module. The module looks at the wheel speed sensors and outputs a vehicle speed on the SCP communications network. This is read by the instrument cluster, PCM, radio, Overhead Trip Computer and a couple of other things. Hope this helps.

OK, first i would like to thank those who offered assistance. now i will tell you what i found. all the components checked OK. somewhere i read that there could be a problem in the wiring between the speed sensor and wherever it goes at the front. i decided to start at the rear. logically that is where the wire is most exposed and has the most movement between the differential and the frame. i went to the junk yard and got the wire between the sensor and the frame rail. i cut it as close to the frame as space would allow and soldered the newer piece in, complete with shrink wrap of course. i cleared the 0500 code and went for a ride. problem solved. i then went to the workbench and stripped the cover off the wire loom and found that one of the wires had parted about a foot up from the plug. may have been hit by a rock or just got work hardened and broke from flexing up and down. i'm glad i have it fixed, it's been bothersome for years. i hope if anyone else has this issue this will help. john

That won't work on the PSD. Ford trucks have an OBD II port that is shaped a whole lot different than the one shown. Answered on my iPhone.  

P0500 Fix Here's another fix. My truck had no speedometer, the OD light was blinking and the ABS light was on. I hooked up a scanner with live data stream capabilities and saw that the VSS was reading when I was driving. I also noticed that the trailer tow package fuse in the engine compartment was blown. I replaced the fuse and checked the ground near the driver side headlamp in the engine compartment. I think this was the ground for the ABS. The ground was loose and I retightened it. I'm not sure if it was the fuse (I read in another post that the tow package fuse was giving them electrical faults) or the ground, but the speedometer started reading, the ABS light went off and the flashing OD light went away.

Guys, today I was trying to check fuses because my 4wd will not engage. Everything looked ok and I had to meet the wife for dinner so I put covers back on and took off. All of a sudden I have abs light on and no speedo. No clue where to start on this one. My truck is 06 f250 Tuscany with 93k miles. All of a sudden things are falling apart. Help. Should be 800-1800 ohms P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor A Description: Indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) detected an error in the vehicle speed information. Possible Causes: • Open in the VSS harness circuit • Short to GND in the VSS harness circuit • Short to PWR in the VSS harness circuit • Damaged wheel speed sensors • Damaged wheel speed sensor harness circuits • Damaged ABS module • Damaged PCM Diagnostic Aids: Monitor the VSS PID while driving the vehicle. This DTC is set when the PCM detects a sudden loss of vehicle speed signal over a period of time. If vehicle speed data is lost, check the source of the vehicle speed input.

I know the feeling, but I have to remind myself that nothing lasts forever. I love my truck, it was the worst 3 weeks waiting to get my studs and oem gaskets done.

Removing the battery cables will have no effect on custom tuning.  

Removed battery cables this weekend. No change! Finally found my voltmeter to check the ohm and viola - nothing! Looks like the sensor went bad. Now to replace - Does anyone have the item number for that sensor? I have seen sensors from $20 to $120 but none say they are the right number? Per an online search i found F85Z-2L373-AB. Is that correct? are there any others to cross reference? Thanks all  

This should be the correct part number. (DY-998 Vehicle Build Date before: 12/4/2005), (DY-1073 Vehicle Build Date after: 12/5/2005). I'm thinking that the DY-1073 replaced the DY-998.  

Ordered new VSS and installed. One of the easiest pieces to replace for sure. Still no change. Getting P0500 code with new sensor. Where do I go from here as far as troubleshooting this problem? thanks

Ok, were gonna have to start checking the wiring. I pretty sure the harness from the sensor goes to the ABS first then on to the ECM. I've heard of some folks finding broken wires inside the loom as they trace it to the ABS module. Lets start at the rear and work our way towards the front following the wires the whole way.  

Ok. Sounds like the hunt is on. Do I need to open up the wire protectors and then zip tie them back once I am done in that area? Haven't done this before so I want to be prepared. Yup, thats a good start, if you trace them all the way to the ABS you can then use a DMM (Digital Multi Meter) to check continuity of the wires from one location all the way to the other. Just a shot in the dark, but i'd say that youve got a broken wire somewhere, also check the VSS sensor just for s*** and giggles, I've read where some folks have had some bad new sensors.  

I did check it when I got it out of the box with my DMM and showed 0 ohms? I just assumed I was doing it wrong or that it was the correct reading. I do remember someone saying it should show about .8 ohms, Is that correct?  

Should be 800-1800 ohms.

any luck on finding a broken wire or getting your speedo to work?  

Sorry for no update in almost 12 months. I had a company car so the truck didnt get driven often, now I am changing jobs and it will be my daily driver and I still have the issue. No speedo and no boost over 16psi. ABS light stays on. I have inspected all wire looms and they look fine, I hate to open up the wires from end to end and expose every wire under the truck. I have continued to search for options. Maybe I need to check the ABS module - Where can I find that? Option 2 is to simply take it to a shop.

well li am glad to hear my truck is not the only one with this issue. been almost a year on mine since I did the head job and the issue came up right after. I changed the VSS and did nothing. I have not taken the time to check wires because I am not an electrical guy. I read somewhere about the ABS Control Module but that is unlikely the case I would think. I'd like to know if you found anything. I did locate the other day on the driver front side just under the ABS module a 4-pin connector that is not hooked to anything. but I haven't located it's mate yet.  

You need a good scanner in order to get the informaton from the sensors on the front wheel hubs. You could also get that info if one of those got bad. Get a brake shop to scan your truck with a ABS scanner and check the live data from the two front hub sensors. You should get the same information from both of them. Be careful because if the ABS light is on, the ABS system will not engage and you could slip under some wet conditions.  

Thanks Jorge; I know a lot of mechanics but I don't know any that have a scanner for ABS. of the many issues that keep popping up I'm hoping this solves a few of them. up to and including lag and not a lot of power. this truck has turned into the Bane of my existence even tho I like it, it drives me crazy.
