M5 traffic released after emergency repairs in Somerset

The problem was reported heading southbound at around 10.30am

All traffic was stopped on the M5 in Somerset this morning (February 16). There was reportedly a "traffic problem" on the southbound carriageway.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, all vehicles were stopped near junction 25 for Taunton at around 10.30am. The problem was solved and traffic returned to normal by 11am.

Inrix said: "Traffic easing, emergency carriageway repairs earlier on M5 Southbound at J25 A358 (Taunton). All traffic was previously held whilst repairs were made to the carriageway, but all lanes have now reopened."

Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

Live M5 and traffic updates as AA warns of Friday travel spike linked to shopping and school holidays

A lot of extra traffic could be on West Country roads later today

There is a warning of a traffic spike today (Friday, December 15) linked to schools breaking up for Christmas - although pupils and students in Gloucestershire don't start their festive holiday until next week. The AA says the end of the term for some schools could see families head out on pre-Christmas treats later in the afternoon and early evening.

Schools in Bristol, Somerset, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire all break up today. This could put added pressure on the M5 in the West Country and The Midlands and also the M4 and major A-roads.

The AA said it was "expecting a spike in evening traffic on Friday, December 15 with a majority of schools locking up for the holidays and parents extending the school run home by taking the kids out for an early Christmas treat or a visit to Santa’s Grotto. Heavy traffic is predicted around shopping malls and retail parks where drivers can expect to see a spike in traffic between 4pm and 7pm."

Hundred-mile journey of post highlights sea litter

A footpath signpost that washed up on the shores of a beach has called into question the state of pollution in our waterways.

The post, belonging to Shropshire Council, was recovered by local resident Mark Bellew on Weston-super-Mare's main beach on 9 April.

As Shropshire is land-locked, it's presumed the post floated the 100 mile (160km) distance down the River Severn.

The traceable post is an indication of how far litter can travel to the sea.

Mr Bellew first spotted the signpost tossing around in the waves during Storm Pierrick, which pummelled the South West with torrential rain and winds reaching 65mph (104 km/h).

The Environmental Agency (EA) said the combination of spring tides and gale force winds caused "potentially record high tides across the south coast" .

"I like to wander along the beach and look at what gets washed up by the tide," said Mr Bellew, who lives in Locking village.

"Normally there's nothing particularly interesting or recognisable - seaweed, plastic bottles, and small bits of driftwood - but on this occasion, and normally after a storm, is when the larger or more interesting items arrive."

Mr Bellew said along with the signpost, there was also a fully inflated tyre, a metal beer keg and other plastic debris churning around in the water.

Debbie Apted is a volunteer with Cleaner Coastlines, a litter-picking and anti-pollution campaign group in Weston-super-Mare.

"We can't usually establish a source for the litter and debris we find on the beach, but this one was rather obvious," she said.

"We can do all the beach cleans we want, but it goes to show how important it is for people living inland to look after their communities and waterways too," Ms Apted continued.

"This is a prime example of where something has gone into the river in Shropshire and has ended up down on our beach, and so could a lot of plastic, or any other rubbish, as it floats its way down to the estuary and eventually into the Atlantic. That's where it will all end up."

Torrential rain and strong winds can carry macro plastics including plastic bags, bottles, food wrappers and other waste into drains and rivers which then act as conveyor belts, dumping between 1.15 and 2.27 million metric tons of plastic into the ocean each year, according to the EA.

Plastic accumulation in the ocean is not only harmful to marine ecosystems but can also threaten human health, food safety and quality, coastal tourism, and contribute to climate change.

"Choking our rivers and seas, plastic leaches into every corner of the environment," said Josh Harris from Surfers Against Sewage, an organisation campaigning for a cleaner ocean.

"Our communities work tirelessly to eradicate single-use plastic from where they live, to clean up our blue and green spaces, and to educate the next generation of ocean activists.

"All of our waterways are linked, and that's why we take our campaigning inland, from mountain streams all the way out to the sea.

"Connected by our waterways, we're all in this together," he added.

M5 delays after lane closed by crash in Somerset

There were delays heading northbound this morning (April 15)

A lane was closed on the M5 following a crash in Somerset this morning (April 15). The collision led to delays on the northbound carriageway.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, the crash took place at junction 24 for Bridgwater at around 10.15am. The lane reopened and traffic returned to normal by 12pm. It was first reported at around 10.15am.

Inrix says: "Traffic easing, earlier accident on M5 Northbound at J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South). Lane three (of three) was closed."
