Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Scroll through to see all of our favorite walking shoes, or jump straight to the category you're looking for below.

Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. They come in a host of color options, from black to brown leather to snakeskin.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Former Traveler editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker : “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

adidas travel shoes

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

adidas travel shoes

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

adidas travel shoes

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

adidas travel shoes

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

adidas travel shoes

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Birdies Starling flat

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

adidas travel shoes

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox.

The Best Travel Shoes, According to Globetrotters

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.0

Whether you’re hitting the slopes in Aspen in the winter or escaping to a faraway beach in the summer (or winter), getting out of town requires the right gear. That of course includes the stuff you’ll need when you get wherever you’re going, but just as important are the things you’ll use in transit — because everyone knows that getting there is half the battle. In our ongoing search for the best travel gear (see what our editors can’t get on an airplane without , and our roundup of the best rolling luggage ), one item that’s always top of mind is a good pair of shoes to travel in — as in, ones that can withstand both airplanes and cobblestones, and are nice-looking enough to wear straight from the plane, or a day on the streets, to dinner. So we asked some people who get around a lot — including travel writers, photographers, tour guides, globetrotters, and other frequent fliers — about their favorites. Read on for their 28 picks, which include sandals, flats, sneakers, and boots. Quick shopping note: A lot of these shoes come in both men’s and women’s, or in unisex, sizes.

Best sneakers for travel

ADIDAS Women’s Cloudfoam Racer

Travel blogger Annette Richmond calls these Adidas Cloudfoam Racers her “go-tos” because they are “super lightweight and breathable,” which makes them perfect to wear on a flight or walking around a new city, she says. “I pair them with leggings or shorts for an athleisure look that’s perfect for hiking, sightseeing, or a travel day.”

Allbirds Men’s Wool Runners

For another lightweight, easy-to-put-on pair of sneakers, Grant Nyquist, the director of adventure at the Outbound Collective , recommends “Allbirds, hands down.” Wearing these makes airport security a breeze, he promises, and like the Adidas pair above, the Allbirds can be worn with most anything — including slacks. Plus, you can even wear them sockless because the wool wicks away any unwanted moisture. “For the price, the quality, and the style, nothing comes close,” Nyquist says.

New Balance Men's 990V4 Running Shoe

Strategist columnist and cool person Chris Black wears a pair of crisp, gray New Balance 990 v4s to complete his “respectable but still comfortable” airport ensemble. His advice: “Honestly, just keep your toes covered and you already look better than half of the airport population.”

Adidas Alphaboost Parley Shoes

If you are the sort of person who needs to fit in a workout while on vacation and would prefer not to pack two pairs of shoes, this Adidas pair works equally well on the streets or a treadmill, according to Ben Pundole, the editor-in-chief of travel magazine A Hotel Life . Their super-lightweight mesh upper allows feet to breathe during speed training, while still looking cool enough to pass for streetwear. Plus, they’re a part of Adidas’s Parley collection, which means they’re made using recycled plastic found in the ocean.

No Bull Project Dark Grey Gum Trainers

Matt Smith, a co-founder of bespoke luxury travel company Black Tomato , told us he prides himself on being a highly efficient traveler who very rarely checks a bag. That’s why he loves No Bull trainers, which he says are “ like four pairs of shoes” in one. (No Bull trainers took the runner-up spot on our lists of status gym sneakers for both men and women . ) Like Pundole’s favorite Adidas pair, Smith says these are comfortable enough to fly in, durable enough to work out in, and have a design that’s sleek enough to bridge the gap between going out to dinner with clients or taking meetings at the office.

Cole Haan GrandPrø Rally Laser Cut Sneaker

For a slightly less sporty sneaker, Tom Marchant — another co-founder of Black Tomato — suggests this handsome leather pair from Cole Haan, which he says are always a safe bet for travel since they’re designed for comfort and flexibility. “They’re incredibly breathable,” he explains, adding “they’re ideal for exploring a bustling metropolis by foot or gearing up for a long haul flight .”

Filling Pieces Low Curve Iceman Trimix 2.0 Sneakers

“The Filling Pieces shoes are the most comfortable I’ve ever encountered and incredibly durable,” according to David Prior, the founder of travel club PRIOR . The keys to a good traveling shoe , he says, are being able to get it on and off quickly, and for it to still feel comfortable when your feet inevitably swell while in the air. “They also need to be presentable enough when you’re getting off the plane and need to go straight into something,” Prior adds, noting that his favorite pair from Filling Pieces meets his criteria for ease of use and comfort, but still look super stylish with their fun colors and chunkier sole.

best travel shoes

“I’m an active traveler, so I know I need footwear that will be comfortable, lightweight, and good-looking,” says Kristin Finton, a category merchandising manager for footwear at REI . She likes this Altra pair for its “versatility” and “understated” style, noting the sneakers are great for walking all day or a quick run in an urban destination. “I love the fit, and they’re a huge REI customer favorite,” Finton adds. Adventure travel consultant Matt Schonwald — who also leads guide trips 100 days out of the year — is another proponent of Altra Footwear, but prefers its “trail-worthy” Altra Lone Peak RSM sneakers as his go-to travel pair.

Salomon Sense Ride Sneakers

If you are planning your upcoming trip to commune with nature, Finton suggests the Salomon Sense Ride sneakers. She wore them to hike and run along a river trail in north Vancouver and she says the grip made her feel secure: “I was especially pleasantly surprised that the grip held over larger wet boulders.” She also wore the same shoe to explore Runyon Canyon, which she describes as being a “super-hardpack, dry, sandy,” trail. “I thought I was going to go down because everyone was slipping on the sand layer, but nope — I felt secure, cushioned.” And as a bonus, she loves the “techy cool” look of the bright color and quick laces.

Vivobarefoot Primus Swimrun FG Mesh

For beach adventures, Josiah Q. Roe , the director of media company Granite & Light (which focuses on outdoor adventure and travel experiences), loves these mesh sneakers from Vivobarefoot, which he wore while on a trip to Roatán. “Hiking, swimming , scrambling over rocks and sharp coral: They crushed it and weigh next to nothing.”

Common Projects Achilles Grained Leather Sneakers

They may cost as much as some plane tickets, but according to Flight 001 co-founder John Sencion, you will not find a more stylish travel shoe (that’s also comfy) than the Achilles sneakers from status brand Common Projects. “From the jetway to the boardroom or the beach , this shoe has the broadest style spectrum than any other shoe,” Sencion says, adding that he’s felt as comfortable wearing them to a meeting at the company’s Tokyo office as he has to the beach in Tulum.

best travel shoes

For a less expensive travel shoe that’s just as good-looking, Mike Arnot, the founder of luggage company Owen & Fred , suggests Greats. “I see tourists wearing Crocs , and a few pilots wearing black Danskos ,” he says. “No. Just, no. I wear a pair of Greats,” which, Arnot adds, he’s been complimented on more than once at an airport — including by some hard-to-impress TSA agents.

Best slip-ons for travel

Sanuk Vagabond Slip-on Sneaker

For a recent two-week stint in Cusco, Peru, Schonwald told us he packed these and another pair of running shoes . But he barely used the running shoes, he said, because the Sanuk slip-ons were so comfortable for walking around town. In addition to being good for sightseeing on foot, he says these easily transition into beachwear if you’re going somewhere that’s part city, part sand. They also pack up well, he adds.

Women’s Lucky Brand Emmie Flats

Foods of New York Tours creative director Am Bandolik only takes one pair of shoes with her when she travels: the Emmie flats from Lucky Brand, which she’s worn “over the concrete of NYC and the cobblestones of Rome.” She loves that they are casual, but still feel feminine and stylish. Plus, they’re foldable, so it is “easy to fit a few colors — your basic black or brown and a fun color — in your suitcase without going over the weight limits on your bags.”

Clarks Women’s Kinzie Light Skimmer

In our roundup of the most comfortable shoes (according to people who stand all day), flight attendant Crystal Roseberry told us about her favorite comfy flats from Clarks, which she wears during long shifts in the air because they are “well made and cute, provide good support, and last forever.”

best travel shoes

Abra Boero, the founder and creative director of Off Season Rockaway , calls Sabahs “the ultimate travel shoe,” because they not only slip on and off with complete ease, but are suitable for so many different climates. “I wear the same pair to the beach that I wear in the winter with wool socks .” Their supple leather molds to your foot, making them super comfortable even after a long flight, and the unfussy design keeps them very lightweight, she promises.

Best boots for travel

A New Day Women's Chelsea Rain Boots

If you’re headed someplace known for rainy days, these weatherproof Chelsea-style rain boots are the ones that travel blogger and photographer Samantha O’Brochta relies on. She says they’re “extremely comfortable” and an “easy way to rock a cute pair of shoes that also double as something useful against inclement weather.” Plus, they cost a fraction of the price of a pair of Blundstones.

White Mountain Women's Santiago Ankle Boot

Richmond says that most people “think orthopedic or ugly” whenever she says the words “comfortable shoe,” but assures that these boots are neither. “White Mountains are comfortable shoes with style.” The ankle boots rise a bit lower on the leg than a Chelsea boot, and have a stacked heel that makes them great on trips where you might need to dress up a bit, she says. The heel isn’t too high, though — just enough to give you extra inches without killing your feet, according to Richmond.

Tod’s Short Suede Ankle Boot

“I don’t consider myself a big shopper, so finding one pair of shoes I can count on time and time again is essential, especially when traveling,” says James Merrett, the third co-founder of Black Tomato . During the winter months , he loves these boots from Tod’s, which offer more protection from the colder elements, but “most importantly don’t make you look like a tourist” due to their more “modern aesthetic.”

Clarks Desert Boots, Oak Suede

For a similar style of boot that costs a lot less, you might consider Clarks Desert Boots — a favorite style of Black , Strategist senior editor Anthony Rotunno , designer Andy Spade , and actress Frieda Pinto . In addition to looking nice enough to wear just about anywhere, the boots are also comfortable. As Pinto put it, “I feel like I can walk a  million miles in them .”

Women’s Ecco Skyler Wedge Booties

Skogg is a fan of these Ecco Wedge Booties for trips in colder weather . “They really held up during my trips to Iceland and Greenland and are lightweight for packing,” she explains. But, most importantly, “They are really comfortable to withstand an entire day of pavement wanderings,” she says.

Danner Mountain Light Cascade Boots

“If you’re looking for one boot to rule them all, the vintage styling of the Danner Mountain Light is iconic, and the one-piece leather design makes for a sturdy boot that can handle anything from a casual walk around Telluride to a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail,” says mountain climber Zina Bougri. (These also happen to be the boots that Reese Witherspoon wore in the movie Wild .) Once these babies mold to your feet, you’ll have a pair of boots to adventure in for years to come,” promises Bougri. She adds that the boots should be completely comfortable within a month. To best break them in, Bougri recommends wearing them around the house for a few days (even just while watching TV for a few hours at a time), then go on a few short hikes.

Danner Mountain 600 4.5” Hiking Boots

Alex Howard, the editor of Lonely Planet magazine , is also a fan of Danner boots, which he wore on a recent research trip to Alaska. “I’m a light packer, so I need a pair of shoes that can do double duty on trips where I’ll be spending as much time on the trails as I do in the city.” He says that these worked great as lightweight, waterproof hiking boots, while still being stylish enough to wear while checking out the craft-brewery scene in Anchorage. “Other hiking shoes are function over form, but these Danner boots have trendy leather uppers and red accents with all the support and ruggedness of proper trail boots.”

For another pair of “town-to-trail” boots, REI category merchandising manager Tad Summersett likes the Agent Evo from Asolo. Like the Danner boots above, Summersett says these are “super versatile — stout enough to help support while carrying a pack between towns, but stylish enough to not look out of place in the pub that afternoon.”

Best sandals for travel

Birkenstock Arizona Sandals

“I never leave home without my Birkenstocks ,” says Ariel Kaye, CEO and founder of Parachute . “They are classic and fit me like a glove.” Kaye adds that she while also tosses a pair of her Philip Lim mule loafers in her suitcase to “add sophistication for a business meeting” or for dinner with friends, the Birkenstocks remain the “staple” that she slips on almost every single day when traveling from home.

Women's Chaco Z/1 Classic

National Geographic explorer Erika Skogg says she is a huge fan of Chacos because “you can wear them with a casual dress, take them hiking , go for long city strolls, or hang out around the campfire.” Plus, they’re weatherproof and last forever: “The only time I’ve ever had to buy a new pair is when I somehow left one sandal in a hotel room in Reykjavik.” While they may seem like a shoe that would only work in sunny locales, Skogg recommends throwing a pair of wool socks under them if the temperature dips.

Teva Original Universal Sandals (Women's)

Rose Annis, a strategist and writer for CNN’s Great Big Story, wasn’t sure if she could pull off her “ugly cute” Teva sandals. But after buying them, she fell in love. “They are incredibly comfortable, don’t rub or cause blisters, are waterproof, and I feel like the thick, sole makes them look kind of fashion-y.” Annis has worn them to explore everywhere from Oman to the Everglades and even threw them on in L.A. with a silk jumpsuit. Teva sandals were also a favorite of Strategist staffers this past summer, with both managing editor Maxine Builder and Rotunno picking up new pairs (and Rotunno using an old pair to hike the Great Wall of China).

Adidas Adilette CF+ Logo Slide Sandal

“I personally always bring a pair of Adidas foam sliders on my long-haul flights,” says Brian Kelly , the founder of travel website The Points Guy . In addition to being easy to slip on when he needs to run to the bathroom mid-flight, he says the slides are “ultra-comfortable and my ultimate lounging shoes when hanging at a resort or going to the beach.”

A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

The thermoregulating material is sustainably sourced using regenerative agriculture and carbon-reducing practices; it also makes for a cozy, itch-free fit around your foot. These lace-up sneakers are especially useful for cool weather vacations, but the similar Allbirds Tree Runners are a great lighter option for warm climates.

My Allbirds Wool Runners are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. They require zero breaking in and look great with a bunch of different outfits. I've worn them through multiple airports and to tour around big cities all day. They are like walking on a cloud, and I never have any foot pain! You can wear them with or without socks, and they are machine-washable, which is the cherry on top. – Nicola Wood , Senior Editor

Price: $98 or less

Merrell Moab 3 (men's) in olive against white background.

Courtesy of Merrell

What makes them stand out: These shoes have received plenty of accolades for being durable hiking shoes, especially because they're designed to handle rugged terrain. The Merrell Moab 3 has laces, webbing and a mesh lining all made from recycled materials. The rubber heel and toe cap are designed to protect your feet, while the outsole gives you traction and the Merrell Air Cushion technology absorbs impact. Extra ankle support provides stability when you're navigating uneven terrain. What's more, the contouring footbed offers maximum comfort and the leather on these shoes is gold-rated (which means it's been responsibly sourced; the designation is the highest rating from the Leather Working Group).

I can't emphasize enough how comfortable these shoes are. I've brought them on several trips, including a few weeks in New Zealand, and while I love them for hikes, I just as often find myself putting them on to go for a casual walk in the city. I also love that even though they're lace-up, I can pretty much always just slip them on without using my hands. – Catriona Kendall, Editor

Some Chacos, such as the ZX/2 and Z/2 styles, have a toe loop for a bit more support, while the ZX/1 and Z/1 sandals do not have one. Another consideration is how much cushioning you want: Unlike the Classic options, the Cloud styles are equipped with cushioning.

I've had my pair of ZX/1 Cloud Chacos for years and they're my favorite hiking sandal. They're durable, comfortable and stylish, and they're especially handy when water-based activities are involved. For example, my Chacos were perfect for walking along the rocky bottoms of the cenotes (swimming holes) I explored on a recent trip to Mexico. – Leilani Osmundson , Senior Digital Producer

Choose from several different colors for the stripes on the sides of these white shoes.

I panic-bought these white sneakers to go with various outfits before a trip to Europe. Even though I had no time to break them in, they were instantly comfortable. These white sneakers lasted for miles as I walked all around London for days, and they matched well with everything. The exterior is easily wipeable whenever they get a little dirty. I couldn't believe how immediately comfortable they were and how I got no blisters or sore feet as I wore them on my trip. They're now one of my go-to everyday shoes as well for running errands. – Erin Evans

Frequently Asked Questions

No matter where in the world you want to go, your travels will likely involve some amount of walking as you explore new cities and natural wonders.

"The dirty little secret of travel, especially air travel, is the true amount of walking involved just getting to the destination," says board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, of Paragon Podiatry . "For instance, airports are cavernously large, and it's not unusual to walk a mile or more just to get to the gate after spending what can seem like an eternity in a long security line."

If you don't bring the right footwear, walking can become painful, limiting what you're able to do on your vacation.

"Investing in high-quality shoes ensures durability, support, and overall foot health during your travels," says Maggie Trevillion, founder of Callen Olive, a luxury leg and foot skincare brand, and podiatrist at Walk This Way Podiatry . "Quality shoes are designed to withstand the rigors of exploration, offering better cushioning, stability and traction. They can help prevent foot fatigue, blisters and other discomforts, allowing you to explore your destination with confidence and gusto."

Quality walking shoes are important for more than just your feet, too: "Wearing proper walking shoes with adequate cushioning and support helps to distribute the body's weight evenly, reducing the strain on our feet, ankles, knees and hips," according to Daniel Pledger, podiatrist and founder of ePodiatrists .

When weighing your options, Trevillion recommends looking for the following features:

  • Comfort , including cushioning and arch support
  • Breathable and durable material , with features like sturdy outsoles
  • Lightweight build , for easy packing
  • Traction , with rubber or multidirectional lug soles to give you a good grip
  • Versatility , so you can use one pair of shoes in different environments

Pledger emphasizes the importance of arch support in your walking shoes. "This helps to maintain the natural alignment of the foot and reduces the risk of arch-related problems like plantar fasciitis," he says. He also recommends a well-cushioned midsole to absorb the impact as you walk; a supportive heel counter for stability; and a flexible outsole, which will allow for natural foot movement.

Follow your instincts as you try on shoes. "The shoe that feels most comfortable in the store is probably the best shoe, whatever style that may be," Isaacson says. "And if it's not comfortable in the store it's not going to magically conform to the foot in the bag on the way home."

With so many shoe brands on the market, your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and foot characteristics. There is no one shoe that will work for every foot.

Pledger's patients, for example, offer consistent positive feedback for shoes from New Balance, ECCO and Merrell. Even still, "I would caution against blindly following brand recommendations without trying on the shoes and assessing their fit and feel," Pledger says.

Trevillion also recommends ECCO and New Balance, adding that KEEN and Salomon also have great options for challenging terrain. These brands are all praised by travelers worldwide, but don't be discouraged if the shoes that work for others just don't fit your shoe preferences. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to wear them, so try out different options if you need to and discover what features suit you best.

When searching for your perfect walking shoe, look at the following:

  • Outsole: This is the bottom of the shoe that will have direct contact with the surface you are walking on. It should be flexible and shock-absorbing. A sturdier outsole will provide more stability for a variety of pavements.
  • Insole: This is the interior bottom of the shoe. You'll want a comfortable fabric to prevent your foot from rubbing, as well as cushioning and support.
  • Midsole: This is the area inside the shoe where the arch of your foot rests. Having a strong foundation here is key for foot alignment and proper support.
  • Upper: This refers to the fabric and construction of the portion of the shoe that will cover the top and sides of your foot. The fabric type will determine breathability, durability and if it will repel water.
  • Heel cup: This is the area where your heel sits inside the shoe. It should be secure for walking and may have additional cushioning for shock absorption.

Best travel shoes — fashionable & comfortable shoes for traveling.

The ultimate guide to the best travel shoes that are both stylish and comfortable.

Packing , Product Reviews

adidas travel shoes

Picking the correct travel shoes is one of the most important (and most frustrating) parts of traveling to Europe. I still struggle with it—but don’t worry because in this guide I help you choose the best shoes for traveling.

UPDATE : I’ve also included my travel footwear recommendations for both women and men.

Quick Tips For Picking Comfortable Shoes For Travel

adidas travel shoes

Between living in NYC and spending a lot of time exploring Europe, I know first-hand that comfortable shoes make traveling much more enjoyable. You’ll easily walk 5-10 miles a day when exploring a city… even spending a few hours at a museum can be killer on your feet.

So treat your feet well.

Here are a few things to consider when evaluating your shoes:

  • Comfort Beats Fashion (Always) : It doesn’t matter how cute your shoes are — if they’re uncomfortable, they’re staying at home. One bad blister or an aching foot can truly ruin your day.
  • Quality socks will help prevent blisters, stop odor, and keep your feet comfortable. For more information about socks, be sure to read about our favorite socks for travel .
  • Support & Insoles: Every foot is different so we’ve found that adding a nice pair of insoles can make shoes, flats, and boots much more comfortable.
  • For example — A pair of flats isn’t appropriate for trekking through Iceland, and a pair of heavy-duty mountaineering boots probably is overkill for walking the streets of Paris.
  • Break In Your Shoes: BREAK IN YOUR SHOES! A lot of people forget this critical step because even the most comfortable shoes can cause blisters during the first couple of wearings. We recommend wearing your shoes for a couple of weeks before your trip.
  • Versatile Shoes: Depending on your travel style, you’ll want to limit the number of shoes you bring. We rarely travel with more than two pairs so make sure your shoes look good in a variety of settings.

Tips for Buying Shoes Online

Best travel shoes - A complete guide to the most comfortable shoes for travel.

Buying shoes online can be a bit tricky since all brands seem to fit a little differently. I almost exclusively order shoes from Zappos if I’m buying them online—they give you free delivery (which is often one or two-day shipping) and free returns.

If you’re not sure which size to buy, I suggest buying two sizes and then returning the pair that doesn’t fit. Zappos gives you a pre-paid return label and will refund your money within about 7 days—they make the process super easy.

The Best Travel Shoes By Category

To make things easier, I’ve divided this guide into sneakers, walking shoes, boots, sandals, flats, etc. — each section has footwear recommendations for both men and women. Feel free to jump around as needed.

The Best Sporty Casual Sneakers For Travel

Yes, you can wear sneakers when you travel without looking like a “tourist”. In fact, a cool-looking pair of sneakers is our preferred travel shoe in most cases. Luckily, there are a ton of fashionable options available these days but here are a few of our favorites.

Note: Some of the more “minimalist” shoes will benefit from the addition of insoles.

Women’s Casual Sneakers For Travel

adidas travel shoes

Ecco also makes a lot of cute, sturdy, & comfortable sneakers. The Ecco Soft VII is a great city shoe.

Allbirds - Best travel shoes

We’re really digging Allbirds shoes for travel. They’re sneakers but they’re made of wool — which sounds kind of weird but it actually works well. These shoes are super comfortable and you can wear them without socks (one of the benefits of wool is odor prevention). They are crazy lightweight so they’re easy to pack away. They come in multiple colors and cost $95. Available via Allbirds .

Allbirds multiple new shoe lines — I’m a fan of the Tree Runners and Tree Dashers because are made of eucalyptus pulp instead of wool so they’re a bit breezier than the Wool Runners.

Read our Allbirds Review if you want more information.

adidas travel shoes

We were recently in Madrid and we saw a ton of European men and women wearing Adidas Superstars . They were seriously everywhere. Zappos has multiple styles and colors — plus they’re fairly affordable.

adidas travel shoes

We’ve also noticed a huge rise in the popularity of New Balance shoes throughout Europe — we’ve seen everything from neutral to super bright colors. We’ve loved New Balance shoes for a long time so we’re happy they’re now popular in Europe.

A classic choice is the New Balance 574 because it comes in multiple colors and strikes that balance of being fashionable, sporty, and comfortable. For maximum comfort, consider any New Balance that features their Fresh Foam soles. Check out Zappos to see the various color options.

And of course, there is Nike — which is always a popular shoe choice for being fashionable and comfortable.

best travel shoes - casual sneakers

BENSIMON sneakers are a very popular and fashionable casual sneaker in France. You’ll see tons of trendy Parisians wearing them during the summer. They are available in dozens of colors and styles, but it can be a little difficult to find the full range of styles and colors in the US.

We don’t think you can have them shipped outside France from their website, but there are a few retailers who carry them in the US.

However, Superga  and Keds both make shoes in a very similar style (pictured above) — so they’re a great alternative that’s also easy to find.

best travel shoes - speary shoes

Sperry Top-Siders look great with shorts, capris, skirts, and jeans, making them super versatile. They are a good option for the spring or summer.

best travel shoes - puma women

Puma produces a number of sporty, yet fashionable, sneakers that are great for travel. Their styles are always changing, so you’ll want to check out all the different styles they have on Zappos .

best travel shoes - casual sneakers

Converse Chuck Taylor’s are ultra trendy in Europe right now and they make a cheap and shabby chic option. The Chucks 2 have good arch support but the normal Chucks are known for being pretty flat.

If you don’t like Chuck Taylor’s, there are many other similar style shoes available — for example,  Onitsuka Tiger by Asics  and  Vans .

best travel shoes - Tom's Shoes

Everyone knows about TOMS shoes, and they are great shoes for travel because they are comfortable, lightweight, and cute. These are great options for urban travel during the spring and summer. They’re not the most rugged shoes so they’re better suited for shorter periods of wear.

Men’s Casual Sneakers For Travel

best travel shoes - casual mens

Just about every athletic shoe brand has a line of casual sneakers — especially leather shoes that look good during the day and at night. Check out Nike , New Balance , Puma , and Adidas .

adidas travel shoes

We have also seen multiple Europeans wearing Adidas Ultra Boost — these seem to be the “it” shoes right now. A ton of people sing the praises of Adidas Ultra Boost for being the most comfortable shoes they’ve ever worn.

We also love their classic Adidas Originals and Superstar sneakers as they’ll never go out of style.

adidas travel shoes

We’re really digging Allbirds shoes for travel. They’re sneakers but they’re made of wool — which sounds kind of weird but it actually works well. These shoes are super comfortable and you can wear them without socks (one of the benefits of wool is odor prevention). And they are crazy lightweight so they’re easy to pack away. They come in multiple colors and cost $95. Available via Allbirds .

Allbirds has greatly expanded its shoe offerings to include shoes made of eucalyptus pulp instead of wool so they’re a bit breezier than their wool shoes — check them out here .

We’ve written a more in-depth  Allbirds Review  if you want to learn more.

adidas travel shoes

New Balance is another great brand that you’ll see all over Europe. We’ve been wearing them for years so it’s nice to see Europeans discovering them as well.

We’re big fans of the New Balance Classics because they have great retro style, but still offer the comfort of a running shoe. I’ve seen similar shoes in many stores and boutiques in Paris and Barcelona so you’ll see plenty of Europeans wearing these.

Athletic Walking & Running Shoes For Travel

Full-on athletic running/walking shoes will likely be the most comfortable option for exploring the streets of Europe. These might not be the most fashionable option but we’ve started noticing a lot more Europeans starting to wear them.

Women’s Athletic Shoes for Travel

adidas travel shoes

Hokas have become the undisputed “most comfortable” shoes on the market and they get rave reviews. Yes, they’re a bit ugly but even the most fashionable celebrities are wearing them so Hokas are on trend.

Hoka makes many models but we recommend the Hoka Clifton , Hoka Bondi , Hoka Rinkon , and the Hoka Arahi as they all make great travel shoe options. Check out Amazon for the full selection.

best travel shoes - brooks

One of the best-rated running shoes is the Brooks Ghost . These will not win any points for fashion, but they will keep your feet happy. In fact, all Brooks shoes get excellent comfort ratings.

best travel shoes - running shoes

If you’re looking for a comfortable athletic shoe that has a bit of a lower profile, check out the  Nike Free , New Balance Arishi , Adidas Running , and Adidas Originals series . All of these are sporty and fashionable.

adidas travel shoes

The Allbirds Tree Dashers 2 is the most advanced running shoe offered by Allbirds so it offers the brand’s most support and the greatest amount of cushioning. They’re super comfortable and they come in multiple colors.

Men’s Athletic Shoes

best travel shoes - nike

When it comes to nice-looking athletic shoes, Nike is hard to beat. We recommend the  Nike Air Pegasus , Nike Air Max , and Nike Free .

adidas travel shoes

Brooks is known for making crazy comfortable shoes and their Ghosts are universally loved for their comfort.

Waterproof Trekking/Hiking Shoes For Travel

Trekking/hiking shoes look a bit like beefed-up athletic running shoes and they’re designed for long hikes. This style of hiking shoe is a popular choice for many travelers because they offer a lot of support, they are generally lightweight, and most are waterproof/weather resistant — which is a huge plus.

Unfortunately, it is pretty tough to find a “fashionable” pair, but these are probably your best all-around option if you travel during the snowy/rainy months or if you plan on spending a lot of time in the countryside.

NOTE: Weather-resistant shoes (as opposed to “waterproof”) should be sufficient for most travelers.

Women’s Waterproof/Weather Resistant Hiking Shoes For Travel

best travel shoes - New Balance trail runners

Ok, these Fresh Foam Gobi V2 – Protect Pack from New Balance are technically “trail runners” but they’re highly water-resistant and nice looking. We could totally rock these in Europe.

best travel shoes - Keen hiking shoes

Keen is another brand known for being comfortable. These Keen Presidio shoes get rave reviews for their mix of hiking shoe durability and sneaker looks. Plus, they are waterproof, so this is a good option if you want a rugged shoe that is suitable for city travel. I also like the Keen Utility Detroit  and Keen Arroyo II because they get excellent reviews for comfort, but they do have a more utilitarian look.

best travel shoes - Merrell

Merrell is a great brand as well. Their Moab line of shoes and boots come in multiple styles — including many waterproof options. We also like the  Merrell Siren Hex Q2 Waterproof , and the  Merrell All Out Blaze 2 Waterproof . Merrell makes a ton of shoes so check out their page on Zappos to see them all.

Men’s Waterproof/Weather Resistant Hiking Shoes

best travel shoes - waterproof hikers

We’ve always been big fans of New Balance . We think they make some of the most fashionable rugged and waterproof hiking shoes — so you won’t look out of place while exploring the city. The  910v3 GORE-TEX is a waterproof athletic trail running shoe that we are digging. We also like the Fresh Foam Gobi V2 – Protect Pack (which is technically only “water-resistant” but it should handle rainy days without much issue).

adidas travel shoes

The Nike Shield line of sneakers are water-resistant so they’re a nice option if you want sneakers that can be worn in the rain but still look cool.

best travel shoes - Merrell hikers

Merrell makes a wide range of comfortable hiking shoes, and many of them are waterproof — which is nice if you travel to rainy climates. The Merrell Moab Waterproof and the Moab Vent (a great summer option) get top marks for comfort and support. The Merrell Chameleon 4 is a low-profile option that is comfortable and sturdy but still looks decent in an urban environment.

best travel shoes - Keen mens

Keen makes some of the most comfortable and durable hiking shoes. The Keen Austin is waterproof, supportive, and it has a decent style. The Keen Arroyo II , Targhee II , and the Keen Voyageur are three other comfortable options that are a bit more utilitarian.

Hiking Boots For Travel

Hiking boots will offer good support and will keep your feet comfortable on long walks, but they might be overkill for most city travel since they are heavy and bulky. Most travelers would be better off using lightweight hiking shoes but boots might be a good idea if you’re traveling in the winter or if you like the boot aesthetic.

Women’s Hiking Boots For Travel

best travel shoes - hiking boots womens

The  Vasque Sundowner GTX   and the Danner Jag both combine old-school style and comfort.

adidas travel shoes

These Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Amped boots get a lot of love and they’re affordable.

Men’s Hiking Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - mens hiking boots

Timberland White Ledge Mid Waterproof  is a nice-looking boot that will serve you well in the winter. The  Merrell Moab Mid GORE-TEX® XCR  is a little more “outdoorsy” but it gets good reviews for comfort. The Danner Jags and the Danner Mountain 600 are two classic hiking boots with old-school style.

adidas travel shoes

The Adidas Terrex Free Hiker is a cross between a running shoe and a hiking boot. Loving all these new hybrids. We actually discovered these from an Instagram ad… and we might buy a pair (technology is scary!). Check them out on Zappos .

Teva Arrowood 2 Mid WP

We’re digging these Teva Arrowood 2 Mid WP boots . They have sneaker styling and comfort but the functionality of waterproof boots. Check them out on Zappos .

Casual Boots For Travel

Casual boots are nice because they are more fashionable than sneakers/athletic shoes, but they are often still comfortable. We prefer dark leather (since it will hide dirt stains well — especially in the winter), but suede can be perfectly fine in the summer.

Make sure you break in your boots for 2-3 weeks before your trip since boots require a longer break-in period.

Women’s Casual Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - clarks boots

The Clarks Desert Boots  are a nice lightweight and fashionable option that works well for the summer and looks great with skinny jeans. These are best suited for the summer since they’re not waterproof. I’d also recommend using an insole.

best travel shoes - chelsea boots

Chelsea boots are another great style of boot for travel because they are super easy to take off — which is great at airports. And they look cool, too. We think these Blunderstone BL585 and  Frye Chelsea boots look great and they get good reviews, but there are plenty of other styles/brands available .

Villa Waterproof Bootie

Blondo receives rave reviews for their boots — and many of them are waterproof so they’re great for rainy weather. They’re also fashionable if you’re trying to dress up your outfit. We’re digging their Villa Waterproof Bootie .

Men’s Casual Boots for Travel

best travel shoes - casual boots

Clarks Desert Boots  have been a classic boot for over 40 years and they’re still just as cool as ever — plus they come in multiple colors. We like these Cole Haan Chukka boots  and  Timberland Davis Square Plain Toe Chukka   because they’re both fashionable and comfortable. Borne also makes these slightly “dressy” Nigel Boots which are super comfortable.

best travel shoes - blunderstone boots

Another nice travel boot is the  Blundstone BL550 . These leather boots are comfortable, stylish, and rugged. The BL550 doesn’t have laces, so they are super easy to put on/remove, which is incredibly nice if you’re going to be flying a lot. Blundstone makes a lot of different models, so I suggest searching for other styles.

Best Travel Flats

Flats are a great option for city travel because they are lightweight, comfortable, and can be casual or dressy. Black or brown is the most practical color choice. Many flats don’t provide a lot of support, so it is advisable to add an insole to help improve comfort.

best travel shoes clarks flats

Clarks is known for being well-made, comfortable, and cute. They have a ton of different styles and colors

best travel shoes - Borne flats

Born makes a lot of cute and conformable flats. The Born Julianne  is one of their most popular models because they look great, provide decent arch support, and come in multiple colors. Born also has many other styles of flats that come in cool metallic or snakeskin finishes.

best travel shoes - Cole Haan flats

If fashion is a top priority, these Cole Haan flats might be the perfect flat since they’re known for providing a lot of extra cushioning. They have multiple colors available, but we would stick with the patent leather options.

best travel shoes - merrell flats

Merrell is known for making great hiking shoes, but they do make a few more stylish flats.

Travel Sandals

Sandals are great in warm weather and there are multiple styles available — from dressy to sporty. Unsurprisingly, the “fancier” sandals tend to have less support than the sporty versions — so keep that in mind.

Best travel shoes - Chaco sandals

Chaco is known for making some of the best hiking sandals. You won’t find these on the runway, but if you want excellent support these might be your best bet — whether you’re doing off-road hiking or exploring Europe’s cobblestone streets.

best travel shoes - Crocs sandals

It might sound strange, but Crocs actually makes a few pairs of nice-looking sandals. The Crocs Sexi Flip is chic, minimalist, and comfortable and the  Isabella T-Strap also gets a lot of love. Plus, they weigh just a few ounces so they will hardly add any weight to your bag.

best travel shoes - birk sandals

Birkenstocks are the quintessential “comfortable” sandal. They make multiple models so look around to see if any look good to you.

best travel shoes - Naut sandals

Naot is another brand that’s famous for making super comfortable sandals.

Insoles for Travel

travel shoes - insoles

Insoles are a great way to make your shoes much more comfortable. Some of the best are from Superfeet , Sorbothane , Spenco , and Sole , but there are plenty of other brands.

Clarks : Founded in 1825, Clarks is an English shoe brand that is known for making quality shoes, boots, and sandals. Blondo : Blondo’s biggest claim to fame is for their fashionable waterproof leather boots — which is something that’s actually fairly difficult to find. Take a look at their full catalog on Zappos .

adidas travel shoes

Blundstone : Blundstone is known for making super comfortable and durable waterproof boots for both men and women. Check out their full catalog on Zappos .

adidas travel shoes

Keen : Keen has traditionally been an outdoors footwear company that made quality but kinda ugly footwear… but they’ve started to make more casual and stylish options (without losing their outdoorsy performance). View their full catalog on Zappos .

Allbirds : Allbirds have exploded in popularity and they’ve been dubbed the “world’s most comfortable shoes.” While we’re not so sure about that claim, we can confirm that these are comfy. Plus, they’re super lightweight so they make a great “second pair” of shoes that can you easily pack into your bag.

adidas travel shoes

UGGS : We were pleasantly surprised to find that UGGS actually makes some very comfortable and stylish footwear. They’re worth checking out. See their full catalog on Zappos .

adidas travel shoes

Adidas : Adidas will never go out of style and you’ll see people of all ages rocking them all over Europe. We prefer sticking to their classic/retro options since they’re the most versatile but you do you. See their full catalog on Zappos .

adidas travel shoes

Nike : You’ll also see people rocking their Nikes all across Europe. I know that I do. That said, we recommend sticking with their retro or fashion-forward sneakers instead of their overly “athletic” shoes. I prefer buying my Nike shoes directly from Nike .

New Balance | Travel Shoes

New Balance : New Balance essentially makes two types of shoes — dorky dad/grandpa shoes and ultra-cool colorful shoes. Stick with the cool ones and you’ll fit right in with the other fashion-forward Europeans. See their full catalog on Zappos .

Foot Care Advice for Travellers

Sometimes, even with the best shoes, your feet will get a bit sore and banged up after walking for hours on end. So here are a few things you might want to pack in case your tootsies need a little extra TLC.

  • Blister Bandages: We always throw in a few blister bandages into our toiletry kit. These things can be a lifesaver. Check out Amazon for various options.
  • Quality Socks: We mentioned it before but nice socks make a world of difference. We prefer wool or wool/synthetic blends. Bombas and SmartWool Run Ultralight make great socks for all seasons—especially their merino wool options.
  • Foot Powder: Putting on a little footpowder before you head out each day will drastically reduce sweat and odor. Check Amazon as there are multiple options out there.
  • O’Keeffe’s Foot Cream: Pamper your feet — especially if you wear sandals often. O’Keeffe’s is the best-rated option on Amazon .
  • Keep Nails Trimmed: Long nails can cause a lot of toe pain so pack a pair of nail clippers.
  • Switch Up Shoes: We prefer to have a day-on-day-off wearing schedule with our shoes when we’re putting a lot of miles on shoes.

North Face Hedgehog

  • Weight:  1 lb. 14 oz.
  • Waterproof?:  Yes
  • Hiking Shoe?:  Yes

For my overall top pick regarding the best travel shoes for men, meet The North Face Hedgehog 3 hiking shoes . If ever there was one single shoe to pack along for just about any adventure, the North Face Hedge Hogs are where it’s at.

The outside material of the Hedgehogs features polyurethane-coated leather uppers and a waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex membrane that does a good job of keeping your feet protected from water penetration.

For chaffing management and control, the abrasion-resistant, breathable textile mesh lining virtually eliminates unwanted movement and rubbing.

For a versatile, lightweight, tough waterproof shoe that is up for any adventure that you are, The North Face Hedgehog 3 shoes are a sure bet.

Even better is the price tag. For $135.00 you can score a truly excellent pair of waterproof hiking shoes without breaking the bank. These have got to be the best shoes for backpacking!

Our team rated these as their best waterproof shoes for travel because they seem to just cover all areas you’d want in a travel shoe. They were super impressed by how well these shoes kept water out whilst also being really breathable and felt they worked well in most non-extreme climates. They also loved how light they felt to carry around and also thought for technical shoes they looked pretty cool too.

  • Affordable.
  • Super Comfortable.
  • Very Versatile/packs easily for long-term travel.
  • Limited Ankle Support.
  • Reports of long break-in time.
  • Not a proper waterproof hiking boot.

Best Waterproof Shoes (Lightweight) for Men and Women

Loom Waterproof Sneakers

  • Price:  $99 USD (sale price)
  • Weight:  N/A
  • Waterproof?:  Yes
  • Hiking Shoe?:  Approach shoe / light hiking shoe

Finally – a lightweight travel shoe that can keep your feet dry without all of the bulk. Like me, you had probably never heard of Loom Footwear before reading this – but let me tell you – their new Waterproof Sneaker is a great option for backpackers traveling to most destinations.

Obviously, if you submerge the shoes completely in a river they will get wet – but the good thing about the Loom Sneakers is that they dry fast. In your average rain storm or puddle splash, the shoes will keep your feet dry. I especially recommend these travel trainers for hot-weather regions like South East Asia or Central America. The breathability factor is huge. You don’t your feet to be more sweaty than they have to be.

The temperature regulation technology uses merino wool to keep your feel cool, while also serving as an anti-microbial agent. This translates into less stinky feet over time, which is something every traveler (myself included) can use some help with. On the other hand, they might be a bit cold if you’re looking for shoes for backpacking Europe in winter.

For the price, build construction, and minimalist look you’d be hard pressed to find a more versatile waterproof travel shoe.

If you’re looking for lightweight waterproof shoes for traveling then our team felt you couldn’t go wrong with the Looms. Our team loved these minimalist travel shoes and felt they were the most stylish on the list as well as being the lowest profile and lightest. They loved that these shoes just looked like regular trainers but offered great functionality for the traveller.

Check out the women’s Loom Waterproof Sneaker .

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Made with merino wool!
  • Shock absorbing soles
  • Not  ultra  durable
  • Not intended for long distance hiking

Most Versatile Travel Shoe (Men and Women)

La Sportiva TX4

  • Price: $159.00
  • Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz (0.5 kg)
  • Waterproof?:  No
  • Hiking Shoe?:  Hiking and Approach shoe

Hiking, walking, scrambling, standing, moving. This is the ultimate durable, versatile movement shoe.

The La Sportiva TX4 is technically what’s called an “approach shoe”. Originally designed for backcountry climbers who need the all-in-one movement shoe, which is the ideal travel shoe.

Vibram rubber lines the bottom of the shoe. What does that even mean? Think of the rubber that comes standard on the bottom of climbing shoes. In most places general hiking shoes/boots will lose traction, the Vibram rubber allows you to commit to that delicate step without concern.

The wide fit of these shoes is also perfect for those of us out there rocking our Frodo feet in the wild! This is also great for climbers looking for shoes that have a bit more give than your average pair of rock shoes.

Our team reckon these are the best shoes for backpacking Europe due to their lightweight construction and versatile usage. They are comfortable pounding the pavements of Paris whilst also being able to hold their own on the trails of the alps. They’re also a good shout for the best travel hiking shoes with their super grippy sole and the team loved how functional there are on the trails.

Hey ladies! Interested in making this purchase for yourself? Thankfully La Sportiva makes the TX4 Approach Shoes for women too.

  • Vibram rubber for additional grip
  • Durable leather uppers
  • Laces seem to break easily

Best Travel Shoe For Scrambling (Men)

adidas travel shoes

  • Price: $159.99
  • Weight: 1 lb. 3.9 oz.

Embark on your next mountain adventure with confidence, equipped with the Black Diamond Mission LT 2 approach shoes. These shoes, unlike other standard hiking shoes, are meant for more technical hikes and scrambles. These bad boys got me up the slick rock of Mt. Kinabalu on Borneo with ease and that’s exactly where they excel.

Constructed with durable, abrasion-resistant materials sourced responsibly, every component of these shoes reflects Black Diamond’s dedication to reducing our environmental impact without compromising on quality. This way when you’re out and about enjoying the mountains, you know you’re not contributing to their destruction too.

The Mission LT 2 doesn’t compromise when it comes to comfort either with a lined and gusseted tongue providing extra padding and support. Black Diamond goes further still when it comes to innovation by infusing the molded EVA midsole with Bloom algae foam to both add incredible comfort underfoot and once again reduce the environmental impact of these shoes. Boom!

What makes them ideal for backpackers above anything else though is just how lightweight they are without compromising on durability. They also feature several webbing loops so you can easily clip them onto your climbing harness or backpack.

  • Super lightweight and comfortable
  • BlackLabel-Mountain sticky rubber
  • Durable and hardwearing
  • Toebox is a little roomy for some technical scrambles

Best Hiking Shoes (Men)

Merrell Moab 3 - best travel shoes

  • Price: $140.00
  • Weight:  2 lbs. 1 oz.

The Merrell Moab 3 WP Low hiking shoes are also some of the best travel shoes for men on the market. Why? I really appreciate their versatility, comfort, and waterproofness.

I have been using some version of the Merrell Moab (either the Moab 3 WP low or the  Merrell Moab 2 Mid WP ) shoes for many years now and I have always been pleased by their performance.

On any given adventure, you never know when you might set off into the jungle, desert, or the mountains. With the Moab 3 WP low hiking shoes, you will be ready to take on most outdoor activities with confidence. They are also supremely comfortable for walking around cities too.

They feature waterproof breathable membranes that protect your feet from wet weather. The breathable mesh lining in the interior of the shoe allows for ventilation.

For comfort, the Moab 3 Wp low shoes come equipped with Merrell air cushion technology in the heels which absorbs shock and adds to stability/balance.

Like the North face Hedge Hogs featured above, the Merrel Moab 2 WP low hiking shoes are some of my favorite hiking shoes for men out there.

The Moab 3 low also comes in a non-waterproof version .

Our team rated these as their top packable hiking shoes due to just how well they performed on the trails and mountains. Merrell is a pretty trusted brand amongst our team when it comes to hiking shoes and they felt the Moab 3 really lived up to the quality they would expect. The only qualm our team had was that these shoes did look a little geeky.

For even more hiking-related awesomeness, check out my in-depth review of the best hiking boots to take traveling here .

  • Well-cushioned/padded
  • Not intended for technical terrain.
  • Wide shape not for everyone.

Best Shoes for Backpacking in Hot Climates (Men)

Adidas Terrex Swift best travel shoes

  • Price:  $135.00
  • Weight:  1 lb. 8 oz.

In recent years, Adidas has expanded into a whole new line of adventure footwear. The  Adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX shoes are ultralight, waterproof, attractive, and designed to crush warm-climate travels.

Now I say that these shoes are best for backpacking South East Asia , but really they are perfect in any warm region of the world.

From my experience, I only wore actual shoes about 50% of the time I was backpacking around South East Asia. That said, when the time came to do some trekking, visit cities, or head to the jungle, I absolutely needed a decent pair to throw on.

A big advantage is that the Terrek Swift R2 GTX shoes is that they are light and super flexible. If you are only carrying a 40 liter backpack , you can easily strap them to the outside or if you don’t have a ton of stuff, even fit them inside the backpack.

Of course, the Gore-Tex lining will keep your shoes waterproof and breathable for the days where you head out into the mountains and jungle.

All said, the Adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX shoes will keep your feet happy while you are backpacking your way around the warmer parts of our planet.

Our team loved that Adidas made some pretty cool-looking travel shoes that buck the trend when it comes to nerdy-looking shoes. They were also pleasantly surprised to find that these travel shoes were also really durable and super functional too. Having teamed up with Gore-tex they effectively kept their feet dry and comfortable and they found the sole mega grippy on slick rock too.

  • Can have a narrow fit.
  • Limited ankle-support
  • Not suitable for high-level trekking.

Best Walking Shoes for Travel (Men)

Vasque Satoru

  • Price: $99.00   –   $149.99 $149.99
  • Weight: 1 lb. 65 oz.

If you are not a super keen hiker, but still want to have the best walking shoes for travel and a bit of light hiking, the Vasque Satoru Trail LT Low  shoes make for a good balance.

If you have ever done even a little bit of backpacking abroad before, you know that you often walk. Like, a lot. Having the best walking shoes for travel—the Vasque Satoru Trail LT Low — will help your feet stay comfortable during all day sight seeing escapades.

Whilst not a shoe I would recommend for long distance hikes, the Vasque Satoru Trail LT Low is certainly up to the challenge of walking around cities and even extended day hikes.

I really like that the Grand Traverse shoes were meant to take a beating. The come equipped with Vibram Ibex soles which are molded with two grippy rubber compounds—Idrogrip for wet-rock traction and Megagrip for maintaining balance. I’m into that; you will be too.

For the best walking shoes for travel, look no further than the Vasque Satoru Trail LT Low.

Our team loved features such as the protected rubber toe box that added to the durability of these shoes when it came to taking them on rough terrain. They also loved how soft and comfortable these shoes felt right out of the box with virtually no break in time.

  • Excellent traction for balance and grip.
  • Well-cushioned/padded.
  • Lightweight/Ideal for city walks.
  • Not intended for ultra-technical terrain.
  • Not waterproof
  • Some users have reported a narrow fit.

Overall Best Travel Shoes for Women

Salomon XA Travel Shoe

  • Price: $160.00
  • Weight:  1 lb. 7.2 oz

Well it is about time I cover the best traveling shoes for women in this review! Since, I am a dude, I have reached out to a few trusted female travel experts/friends of mine who have provided me with more than enough feedback to present you this my top picks for the best travel shoes for women.

First up on my list is my top choice for the best overall travel shoes for women: the  Salomon XA PRO 3D V9 GORE-TEX   hiking shoes .

For long, tiring days of travel the Ortholite sock liners combine a specific Ortholite foam with the contoured EVA heel cups for enhanced heel support and cushioning. Furthermore, they were sculpted specifically for women’s feet with the intention of preventing slippage and chaffing after prolonged use.

To deal with some of life’s wild cards, the mud guards and integrated rubber toe caps provide durable protection from roots and rocks. These boots also come with Gore-Tex protection to keep your feet dry and happy.

For adventurous ladies seeking fully-functional, versatile travel shoes that will cover your bases from the city to the mountains, the Salomon XA PRO 3D V9 GORE-TEX hiking shoes are an excellent choice.

Our team were big fans of these shoes and loved them for several different reasons. They felt they hit the holy grail of keeping their feet dry and comfortable whilst being super light and portable. To add to that they also felt these shoes looked really cool and loved the different colourways they came in.

Th check out the cheaper, non-waterproof women’s Salomon X Ultra 2 Low hiking shoes here .

  • Great breathability for warm weather adventures.
  • Solid traction and grip for rocky trails.
  • Lightweight/Packable/Functional.
  • Limited ankle-support.
  • Some users have experienced a rigid fit,
  • Not a lot of color selection options.

Top Travel Shoes for Hiking (Women)

Keen Targhee III best travel shoes

  • Price:  $144.95
  • Weight:  1 lb. 12.4 oz.

For the best women’s shoes for hiking, my top pick are the  KEEN  Targhee III Mid WP boots .

Evolving from the beloved Targhee 2 model, the new Targhee III has received a few improvements that make these kickass boots even sweeter. The Targhee III Mid WP shoes are now leaner, tougher, and grittier for an even better hiking performance.

First off, the KEEN DRY waterproof breathable membranes keep feet dry while allowing perspiration to dissipate. Despite what society might tell you, ladies are just as prone to stinky, sweaty feet as men. To combat this the Targhee III shoes feature Cleansport NXT treatment to combat foot-funk odor.

The Targhee III provide great ankle support, traction, waterproof protection, breathability, and style points; it is easy to see why they are the best women’s shoes for hiking. Plus they are durable and can handle plenty of the inherent abuse any given backpacking journey will bring. Enjoy…

Our team felt that for those who want something more specific to hiking then these were a great option. Though there were bulkier than some of the lower-profile shoes, they felt they were still super lightweight being only a few ounces heavier than many of the smaller shoes on our list. For the extra size, they were really impressed by their performance on the trails when it came to being waterproof, durable and offering extra ankle support.

FYI I am not sure why these boots are so expensive on Amazon. Check out the KEEN website for the latest deals.

  • Great for a variety of outdoor terrain.
  • Some users have experienced a poor fit,
  • Not as lightweight as other travel footwear.
  • Bulky for long-term travel.

Best Shoes for Backpacking in Hot Climates (Women)

Merrell Moab 3 best travel shoes

  • Weight:  1 lb. 12 oz.

The Women’s Merrell Moab 3 Gore-tex shoes have made it back on my list, this time for the women’s model. The women’s Merrell Moab 3 WP offer up the same awesome features as the men’s version, with female-specific tweaks to crush your travels like a pro.

Again, the Moab 3 WP shoes are not only good for a South East Asia backpacking trip – they kickass in most 3-season conditions! However, they perform exceptionally well in warm climates.

They feature great shock absorption, waterproof protection, ventilation qualities, and a low, sleek cut that won’t crowd you backpack too much when not in use.

For women backpacking in hot/wet climates, the Moab 3 WP are great because they really do breathe, are light, and can provide for an excellent hiking experience in the cities, jungles/mountains of Colombia or Thailand (or where ever the jungle may be).

When backpacking in South America or South East Asia, you’ll probably find yourself in sandals a lot of the time. That said, you will absolutely want to have an awesome pair of shoes for traveling, like the Moab 3 WP model. With these, you’ll tackle any and all adventure opportunities that may come up.

Our team felt that these shoes looked pretty cool for Merrell’s which can sometimes look a little on the geeky side. There’s no doubt when it comes to Merrell’s that you get superb quality and our team was not let down when it came to this pair. But a stand-out feature for them was how comfortable they felt from the get-go and how well they fit.

  • Waterproof (see cons)
  • Great stability and toughness in a lightweight package
  • Not the most stylish

Best Walking Shoes for Travel (Women)

Oboz Sawtooth X best travel shoes

  • Price:  $110.00
  • Weight:  1 lb. 11.6 oz.

Like I said before, us backpackers spend a TON of time just walking around. I am going to invent a statistic here, but I don’t think it is to hard a stretch to say that over the course of a 3-month trip, you probably will walk well over 80 miles (at 5-10 miles/week)!

For that, you’ll need the best walking shoes for travel even if you are not into hiking much. Enter the  Oboz Sawtooth X Low Cut  shoes.

Like any good walking shoes for travel, cushion and support are very important. The supportive BFit deluxe insoles are engineered for fitting and comfort. Also, the dual-density EVA midsoles and nylon shanks provide cushioning and ankle support. The ankle support is not as good as a higher cut shoe, but the Oboz Sawtooth Low model provides decent support all the same.

When considering all your daily walking needs, you can’t go wrong with the Oboz Sawooth Low hiking shoes. Even better – when the opportunity to do a couple of day hikes presents itself, you’ll be ready. Very ready.

Our team loved the fit of the Oboz shoes including their roomy toe box and wider profile size which they felt was quite rare in Women’s footwear. The larger footbox also made them much more comfortable when it came to hiking on tough terrain. Another feature for comfort and functionality was the additional arch support which made them feel much more suitable for longer hikes.

For women travelers, the Oboz Sawooth X Low shoes are the best walking shoes for travel on my list. Get stoked!

  • Lightweight
  • Great traction, cushion, and comfort.
  • Very packable.
  • Not waterproof.
  • Not the best long-distance hiking shoe.
  • Narrow fit isn’t good for wide feet.

adidas travel shoes

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

Best Travel Shoes Comparison Table

Now that you have seen my top picks for the best travel shoes, we will further explore the factors that go into buying the right pair.

Depending on the type of backpacking adventure you plan on embarking on, you’ll need the best shoes for the job – a pair that can meet the demands of your own preference and plans.

Let’s now examine some of the important things to consider when buying your next pair of shoes to take backpacking…

Shoe Performance

Above all else, the best travel shoes should have the necessary performance and be able to meet your needs. If you plan on going to New Zealand or Nepal and doing heaps of hiking, you’ll most likely need a sturdy pair of hiking boots. Backpacking Europe on your itinerary? You’ll need the best walking shoes for traveling around Paris, Rome, and wherever else.

Point being, you’ll need realistic expectations for your shoes. Many experienced travelers have a favorite pair of shoes for traveling that they buy over and over again. For me, it is the  Merrell Moab 3 WP Low  hiking shoes. I love them, and can’t get enough.

Be honest with your self and go with shoes that leave the door open for a wide range of adventures. Some do lean towards better performance in different categories but all of the top shoes on my list are versatile. Finding the right balance of performance is crucial and they key to long term happiness on any backpacking adventure.

top travel shoes

Shoe Comfort

After dialing in what type of performance you are seeking in a travel shoe, comfort is an obvious close second.

Most shoes these days are blessed with plenty of cushion and padding but the exact fit each pair offers varies wildly. Some tend to be narrow, while others are meant for wider feet. The lighter the shoes, the likelier it is to have less padding.

Top Comfort Tip : Consider buying a full size (or at least a half size) larger than you normally wear. The purpose of doing this is to allow room for your feet to swell over the course of a busy day. In the hiking boots world, it is standard practice to go a size up.

For the first half of my adult life, I wore a size 10. Now, whether I am buying shoes for traveling or hiking, I always go with size 11. My feet never feel cramped and they also don’t feel loose or too big.

Everybody’s feet are different, so maybe go a half a size bigger at first and go from there.

top travel shoes

Shoe Weight

Weight it typically tied to both performance and comfort. You’ll want your travel footwear to be relatively lightweight because, when not in use, they will be inside your backpack. The last thing you want is super heavy, bulky travel boots cramping your style.

If you are traveling around South East Asia or another warm part of the world, I recommend going as light as possible. The reality is you’ll probably only be wearing shoes for half the time anyway when visiting hot climates.

A higher performing hiking/travel boot will of course weigh more. Don’t go for ultralight flimsy shoes if your backpacking trip will revolve around lots of hiking. The good news is that all of the hiking shoes on my list are lightweight and will serve you well whether you’re trekking or in town.

Even a midweight models like the women’s  KEEN Targhee III Mid WP  hiking shoes only weigh 1 lb. 12.4 oz. per pair! If that isn’t a great weight to performance ration I don’t know what is.

Shoe Packability

Countless beaches, cities, jungles, forests, train stations, airports, hostels, Airbnbs, small towns, and everywhere in between. These are the places you are likely to haul your rucksack to on any given backpacking trip. In order to have your travel shoe choice integrate seamlessly into your backpacking gear kit, you’ll need them to match what your packing system.

What I mean is, if you are an ultra minimalist traveler (or at least trying to be) you don’t need me to tell you that buying massive travel boots, that you have no hope of actually fitting in your 30 liter backpack, is a bad idea.

When not in use you’ll need a spot to store your shoes. For long term travelers, going with something lightweight, flexible, and versatile is the obvious way to go.

In terms of packability, the  North Face Hedgehog Fastpack GTXs  are a great example of what we like. They will serve you well in a variety of situations without bogging you down with a burden in your backpack.

Waterproof Shoes

Going with waterproof shoes is a personal choice. Some people say that waterproof materials tend to have poor breathability, which then causes your socks to get more sweaty faster. For these people, sweaty feet is apparently an issue.

For me personally, I don’t notice much of difference in terms of breathability. My feet just sweat and it is a fact of life I live with while traveling or doing anything else. I prefer to have waterproof shoes because I also do lots of trekking and sometimes have to cross a river. In the end, sweaty feet are better than soaking feet.

Waterproof shoes also tend to be more expensive and weigh more. That said, they are freaking awesome to have when conditions turn wet, even in a city. You will have noticed that a majority of the shoes on my list are indeed waterproof.

The good news is that if you are not so keen to have waterproof shoes, most models featured in this review have cheaper, non-waterproof alternatives. These are basically the same exact travel shoe minus the Gore-Tex.

Breaking in Your Traveling Boots

I don’t know how many times I have heard backpackers say “Ahh these shoes are so damn uncomfortable!” Usually, they are talking about shoes they have just put on out of the box.

For most hiking boots, YOU NEED TO BREAK THEM IN. This isn’t always true for lightweight/flimsy shoes but the break-in period should certainly be on your radar.

Indeed, some shoes for traveling may straight-up feel uncomfortable, even after breaking them in. In that case, clearly the shoes are not meant for you. The good news is that a lot of retailers, like REI, have an awesome exchange policy. You can take the shoes back even after you have worn them should they not fit right.

Point being, you need to break in your shoes before traveling to achieve the right fit. It is as simply as that.

If you plan on going on a backpacking trip, take a few weeks to break in your shoes. Wear them every day or go on a few small walks and see how they feel. That way, you can avoid many problems and the inevitable disappointment that will result from wearing shoes that were not properly broken in and/or do not fit right.

After saying all that I have about breaking in your shoes, I’ll add this: the  Merrell Moab 3 WP Low  hiking shoes have always felt great right out of the box for me. I can pop them on my feet right after receiving them and head up a mountain with no problems. But again, everyone is different and I certainly would not assume other shoes will be the same.

Costs and Budgets

Most of the shoes featured in this travel shoe guide are neither super cheap nor super expensive. For non-technical, high-performing shoes, you’ll probably end up spending between $120 – $160 for a good pair and even less if they are not waterproof.

High-quality shoes for traveling just cost money. Not lots of money, but enough for you to notice and expect great things from them.

Just ask Mimi over at Atlas Heart about her new Tieks shoes: she hesitated to buy them at first because of the pricetage but has since gotten more than enough use of them to justify the price.

Of course, you can find a cheap pair of backpacking shoes for $30. If you just want something to cover your bare feet and nothing else, going with a budget pair of shoes for traveling might work for you… for a while.

Don’t be surprised when they start falling apart on you within a couple of weeks though.

I’ll end with this: if you spend the money on quality, high performing shoes for travel, you can assume that you will be reaping the associated benefits. Having the right pair that fit great and feel comfortable day after day is so damn crucial that I will repeat it again.

In my opinion, investing in a quality pair of backpacking shoes the first time around is always the way to go.

Bonus Tips for Using Your New Pair of Shoes

Here are a couple of extra words of advice for getting the most out of your traveling shoes!

  • If your pair of hiking boots look a little beat-up, don’t throw them out immediately. Try fixing them yourself first or take them to a cobbler. I’ve seen shoe repairmen work wonders.
  • Don’t wear boots to an American airport – it’s a nightmare getting those suckers on and off.
  • Attach your boots to your backpack using a carabiner. If you have a small pair of traveling shoes, stick them in the water bottle pouch.
  • Avoid submerging non-waterproof shoes in water because it can take hours for them to dry. Take them off before crossing deep rivers or streams.
  • Socks are almost just as important as shoes! Get a good heavy pair if you’re trekking in colder climates and a light pair for hotter ones. If either has the ability to wick away moisture, great! If you only use sandals, we suggest traveling to Germany then.
  • No matter what shoes you choose for travel, pack a pair of sandals with you as well. Just remember that they aren’t meant for every activity.

best hiking boots for the money

In order to put these shoes through their paces, we grabbed a pair of each one, shoved them on our well-worn feet and gave them a good old test, er, walk! To give each pair a proper chance we were sure to walk at least 5km in each pair before judging them.

We also sent pairs out to several team members dotted around the world in heaps of different climates, time zones, seasons and environments just to be sure we covered all bases.

Comfort and Support

A wise man once said, “you never truly know a pair of shoes until you’ve walked a kilometre in them ” or some-shizz along those lines!  Basically, trying on a pair of shoes in a shop is one thing, but seeing how they actually perform on the trails is another. This is when you really get a feel for their breathability, comfort, fit and support!

Breathability and Waterproofing

While testing these shoes out we paid close attention to how well they kept out rain, dew and moisture whilst at the same time giving equal weight to how well they breathed. No one wants swamp foot whilst travelling, so any pair found leaking or holding excess moisture was banished from our list!

For this one, we first paid attention to how light or heavy they feel to wear. Light shoes make traversing the trails that much easier on the legs so that’s always a bonus. But for travel shoes we naturally wanted them to be as light as possible when thrown in or attached to our bags. We took into consideration the intended use of each pair, hiking-specific shoes would be a little heavier for example, and judged whether we felt the weight was justified for each pair.

One of the core tenants of how good a piece of hiking footwear is how grippy it is! But we’re talking all-purpose travel shoes here, so we judged each pair on its versatility in terms of being good for both hikes and city travel too depending on the specifications of each shoe.

Again, this is something you can only really get a feel for by putting yourself in a slippy situation and seeing how well your shoes deal with it … so that’s what we did!

Quality and Durability

When we looked at these shoes we paid close attention to the materials used, the quality of the seam sewing, how well glued the eyelets are and of course the soles. Obviously, when it came to durability this is where testing them out over a few months came in so we could really see how each pair held up.

I got the Blondos after another recommendation here years ago & are still the best travel boot! I’ve put so many miles on them they had to be re-heeled but still look good. They’ve held up & instead of replacing I added new colors to my closet.

Cathie Milone

One of the most difficult things to pack are shoes. I always need to eliminate a few pairs and get down to 3. Airplane shoes that are comfortable are a must Liked the suggestions for the slip ones that will work on the plane , sightseeing and casual/dressy enough for dinner

Debby Bradford

I love my Skechers Go Walk. They were great on the airplane and they were also great all over the UK, Portugal, France, the Queen Mary 2 on our Transatlantic back to the USA, then throughout New York! After four and a half months of travel they still look great too.

Betsy Alonzo

I’ve purchased the Blondo boots for an upcoming trip and may have to try the Taos sneakers. I’ve spent a fortune based on your awesome recommendations. 😊

Gloria Mata Luedecke

I purchased the Ecco Flowt Strap Sandal when Nordstrom had them on sale. I think I won twice by buying a comfortable, less expensive sandal for my trip to Isla Mujeres Mexico. I took your advice and bought them and I’ve been so happy I did. Your suggestions do work. Thank you.

Ann Howell

These are GREAT shoe suggestions. I’m gonna follow up for my trip to Hawaii in November!

Adithy Nagarajan

I got the Blondo Villa Waterproof Boots in black on your recommendation and they were the perfect shoe in Italy in March. Thanks!

Renee Schroder

I read through this article, but ultimately ended up with Kizik Vegas shoes. They have laces, but slip right on and off. No need to bend over and tie. Perfect for going through airport security. Walked an average of 20,000 steps a day for 2 weeks and not one issue. Highly recommend.

Margaret Zimmer

I personally like Ecco tennis shoes, comfortable and if you need to move fast to catch a flight, they are great!

Gina Corea

I love my Vionic flip flops, the best for plantar fasciitis!

Joanna

Your blog is my go to find most comfortable travel shoes. I have purchased Teva’s off your recommendation and loved. Looking at the Blondo loafer for fall that made this post!

Cara Davis

I have several pairs of Skechers Go Walk shoes, and they are super comfy for my bunions!

Susan

This post will help me so much! Thanks for the great information.

Deborah Johnson-Blake

This article came in handy. I am literally packing for a five day women’s leadership conference, and desperately determining which shoes I will pack and how many. LOL The ballerina flat is my favorite, even though I am up short snatcher, I love the red Lucky Brand flats and avoid heels as much as possible. But I would say the black Allbirds Tree Flats are the best for me. The stretchy comfort that moves as my feet move is phenomenal.

D Wilde

I e been a fan of this site for years now. Great resource for recommendations and feedback.

Katie Walker

Thankful for such great info!

Emily

This is always the struggle for me. Thanks!

M.A. Ricci

I love all the suggestions! I’m a Vionic girl myself. The one thing I ask people to think about is when wearing flip-flops or other open sandals on a flight is to wash your feet and clean/sanitize your shoes when you arrive at your destination; there’s a lot of dirt, grime and germs out there!

Anna Zaks

Very helpful, thank you!

Tanja Cleary

I wore All Birds sneakers as they were the bulkiest of what I packed but very very light and easy to get on and off as needed. My intention was to use them for the flight and maybe on land once or twice as I had also packed the Vionic Kirra sandal. I found the all birds so comfortable that they became my work horse in places I knew had hills combined with cobblestones etc like Santorini, Sorrento, and Dubrovnik. They were fabulous!

Sarah Brack

My feet swell on long flights but I’ve never tried wearing flip flops. I love all my FitFlops so even with (toeless) compression socks, that’ll be what I try next. Great suggestion.

Kimberly Bolton

Exactly the info I was looking for!

Michelle Bussell

Thank you for these recommendations for travel shoes on long-haul flights! It’s hard to know what to choose when you are a newbie. Your suggestions help put my mind at ease. Thank you!

Sherry Patterson

Been following for years now and love all the amazing take always and suggestions. Finally got some Blondos and love them

Amy Kaspari

Just purchased the Blondo Villa waterproof booties for November river cruise in Europe!

Angela Carmen

Love your shoe articles. There is nothing better than comfortable shoes for travel and style.

Amy Dudley

Vionic is absolutely the best brand of shoe for anyone with arch support needs!!! I’ve loved every sandal I’ve tried!

We Asked Flight Attendants to Reveal the Shoes They Wear on Long Travel Days — Here, 11 Comfy Picks From $30

The travel professionals have spoken.

Travel + Leisure

This morning I hoofed it from the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park down to my new hotel, NH Collection New York Madison Avenue . I dropped off my luggage, then I walked west to the Neil Simon Theatre to pick up my tickets for MJ The Musical before strolling east on 42nd Street to get to Summit One Vanderbilt where I enjoyed a bird’s eye view of the Big Apple (where I’ll probably log another 10,000 steps before noon tomorrow). Still, I wasn’t worried about my feet. I treat them to flight attendant-approved footwear .

Why are flight attendants the next best thing to podiatrists in my book? They’re on their feet all day. Yesterday, I flew Qantas’ 16-hour flight from Auckland to JFK. I never saw any of the flight attendants sitting or even leaning against the lavatory. They were always standing or walking, and more importantly, doing it with gusto. Their secret? It isn’t Red Bull (I’ve guzzled gallons and have never grown a single feather let alone wings). It’s their shoes.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, airlines don’t give flight attendants footwear with their uniforms. Instead, flight attendants have to use trial and error to find the comfiest, cutest shoes that adhere to their airlines’ dress codes. But thanks to word-of-mouth — flight attendants love to share best practices — they usually succeed. The result? Walking a mile in their shoes isn’t painful, it’s actually pleasant. I recently polled several flight attendants to see which pair(s) they wear for travel, both for work and leisure, and below are the results.

Hoka Bondi 8 Sneakers

“They feel like walking on a yoga mat,” Favian Flores, a flight attendant for United, told me. He packs these APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association)-approved shoes because “consolidation is key” and he likes being able to wear them for sightseeing as well as for workouts. His bonus tip? “Opt for a white or off-white color to match all your outfits.” On Zappos, they come in 23 colors and have more than 2,700 five-star ratings. “I noticed many nurses wearing Hoka,” wrote one shopper who spent two weeks visiting her mom. “My feet had been hurting, so I gave them a try…and loved them. Just returned from a two-week vacation, walking much more than normal, and my feet feel great.”

NAOT Footwear Women's Argus Sneaker

Meanwhile, Katie Storck, a Southwest flight attendant for more than a decade, told me not even a pair of Louboutins can get between her and her favorite sneakers. “They’re easy and quick to remove as well as being super comfortable for walking through airports and breathable to keep on your feet for long flights.” Despite the lace-up look, they’re slip-on and the knit fabric means they’re slightly stretchy, which comes in handy when your feet swell. The removable footbed “molds to the shape” of your foot, and the padded cups keep your heels from hurting. While they’re relatively new and only have one rating (albeit five stars) so far, NAOT has been in business since 1942.

Dansko Women's Professional Clog Slip-on

Jennifer Vincenzo McLucas’ mom didn’t retire from her flight attendant career until she was 76. These shoes were one of the reasons she lasted so long. “Her crewmates would be cranking about their aching feet, and she — at often twice their age — would be tootling right along.” Dansko’s “anti-fatigue rocker bottom” helps with stability, and the reinforced toe box is great for durability. Currently, they come in dozens of colors and styles. I had a fun felt confetti back in college and wore them all over New York City where I went to school. More than 70 percent of this clog’s ratings are perfect five-star ratings with most coming from professionals who work on their feet. “These shoes served me well in medical school,” said one shopper . “When I’m traveling, I have noticed that I prefer to wear these rather than tennis shoes. On the airplane, my feet swell and I constantly have to fiddle with my shoelaces to readjust. These shoes are great during security screening, fast to take off, fast to put on.”

Franco Sarto Women's Bocca Slip-on Loafer

After 35 years of service, Delta flight attendant Hermann Ortiz can confidently say that rubber soles are the way to go. And Ortiz loves a slip-on. This particular pair of Italian-designed loafers for women features a reasonable 1-inch heel, a rounded toe, and 100 percent leather. It’s available in 11 colors and has nearly 3,000 five-star ratings. “I’ve been a flight attendant for over 20 years and these are the only shoes that don’t kill my feet after working 14-plus-hour nights on the plane,” wrote a flight attendant .

ECCO Men's New Jersey Slip-on Loafer

Personally, Ortiz sports these slip-on ECCO loafers. “My flights are long haul, usually between 9 to 17 hours, so comfort is important,” he told me. They’re made with full-grain leather, the heel is 1.25 inches, and they have Ortiz’s favorite: rubber soles. Many of the more than 2,000 five-star ratings come from professionals who work on their feet all day. “These got me through three trade shows over three weekends in a row,” recalled one satisfied shopper who says they’re their “go-to” shoes for traveling because, in addition to being comfortable, “they look classy enough to wear with a suit, or to dress down with a pair of jeans.”

Clarks Men's Whiddon Step Loafer

When it comes to dress shoes, Flores doesn’t sugarcoat it. “They can often be uncomfortable,” he admitted before telling me that he prefers Clarks when he’s working. “They are affordable, durable, and the slip-on design without laces makes them incredibly convenient for traveling.” Available in four colors, they all feature Clarks’ removable signature OrthoLite footbed which minimizes shock impact and wicks away moisture. They have more than 1,000 five-star ratings including this five-star review by another flight attendant who wears them daily praising their “ perfect fit .”

Soda Top Shoes Jaber Ankle Boot

When it came to choosing a career, Allison Uno chose to follow in her flight attendant mom’s footsteps. She’s been servicing Hawaiian Airlines travelers for nearly 20 years now, and she has lots of opinions when it comes to footwear. When she wears pants while traveling, she prefers a pair of boots like these faux leather ankle boots with a nice chunky heel. They’re surprisingly lightweight for being so sturdy and having a 2.5-inch heel. Choose from nine colors, and know that because they’re slip-on, they’re perfect for going through TSA. Many of the 2,300 five-star ratings refer to a short break-in period, and they’re overwhelmingly positive. “Day two: I got 20,000 steps and could have kept going,” reads a review titled “ Cute and durable .”

Dream Pairs Women's Chunky Heel Knee-high and Up Boots

In the winter, you’ll find Storck rocking this look. “The chunk heel makes them comfortable for long days of work and travel,” she told me before confessing that she also wears them off the job. This particular pair has a 2.5-inch heel and features a soft, faux-fur lining and insole. The zipper makes them easy to put on and take off. They’re currently available in seven colors, and more than a few of the nearly 3,500 five-star ratings come from flight attendants. “Comfortable and classy,” described one flight attendant who appreciates all the compliments they get on these shoes. “These really are a dream pair of boots,” they said.

LifeStride Women's Rozz Mary Jane Pumps

Come summertime, Storck is usually sporting these best-selling (they have more than 3,600 five-star ratings) Mary Jane pumps from LifeStride. “The block heels help increase the surface area your foot is applying pressure to and makes them comfortable enough to be on your feet for hours,” she explained to me. By far her favorite heels, they feature a 2-inch heel, faux leather upper, rounded toe, and adjustable buckle strap. Plus, they come in both medium and wide widths in three colors. “I can wear these for a three-day trip at work and not have pain or foot fatigue like so many other shoes,” wrote one flight attendant who says they’re also her favorite after trying “literally dozens and dozens of different kinds of shoes.”

Clarks Women's Emslie Lulin Pump

When Uno wears her uniform, which includes a knee-length skirt, she opts for these practical 100-percent Mary Jane pumps. They’re made of leather and include Clarks’ signature “impact-absorbing OrthoLite footbed.” With a 2.16-inch heel, they make your legs look longer and give you added height, but they’re not so tall you risk twisting your ankle. Many of their 1,100 five-star ratings come from flight attendants. “Love these,” wrote a flight attendant in training , who said, “Now everyone from my class has ordered a pair, too.”

Rockport Women's Total Motion 75mm Pointed-toe Pumps

Siobhan Grogan, a flight attendant for JetBlue, has tried her fair share of Clarks and Naturalizers (two brands beloved by flight attendants) before ending on this 3-inch pair of heels which she told me “hit spot on.” More specifically, she said, “I have high arches, and I can walk through airports in these shoes and on the aircraft all day, sometimes 12 hours, and these heels are the best” On Amazon, they come in 20 different colors and materials including leather, suede, and faux snakeskin. Many of the 530 five-star ratings praise the removable padded insole. “It’s like walking in my slippers,” summed up one flight attendant who describes themself as a “self-proclaimed full-time fashionista.”

A beloved trainer that's been part of the core adidas lineup for over seven decades. There's a reason the adidas Originals Samba shoes have continued to make an impact on culture and fashion after all of these years. The adidas Originals Samba shoes aren't super technical, and they aren't incredibly flashy either. That's where the beauty of the adidas Originals Samba sneakers lie. They're simply a minimalist classic, which means they're versatile and can flow with you through different looks, different days and different modes. The adidas Sambas were first introduced as an indoor soccer shoe, but they've gone on to cover expansive ground — from music venues to fashion runways to the streets all over the world. You'll always recognize the adidas Originals Samba shoes, since the T-toe design makes them unmistakable. There's also the rubber gumsole, which has been around since 1950. That gumsole was originally made for stability in icy conditions back in the day, and it continues to keep you grounded as you move through the city. Another signature marker? The serrated 3-Stripes. When something works, you don't always need to change it — something proven with the adidas Originals Samba shoes.

What can change on the adidas Originals Samba shoes, though, are the colors and materials. You can find adidas Originals Samba shoes in suede or leather, and done up in a variety of colors that can range from mellow and muted to bold and vibrant. You'll find trainers that flash that Samba lettering to really make the style known. Though with all the classic adidas details, there's really no question of what they are. If skateboarding is your thing, then there are the adidas Originals Samba shoes that were made for board control and increased durability and stability as you cruise and flow. There's no limit to options, so browse through the selection of adidas Originals Samba shoes and discover the one that feels right.
