Relive the highs and lows of classic car competition at Tour Auto 2023

alfa tour auto

Think of it as France’s Mille Miglia, or Panamericana, a gruelling long-distance rally designed to push driver, co-driver, and car to their absolute limits. Now think of it being held back in 1899, when even the idea of an automobile was in its complete infancy. Back then, over a century ago, the event was known as the Tour de France Automobile. It may have changed slightly since those humble beginnings, but competitors in the Tour Auto 2023 do follow the same route as those pioneers way back when, and you’ll be pleased to know it’s one heck of a journey!

A Racer’s Perspective on the 2014 Tour Auto (2 of 2)

alfa tour auto

Story by Frédéric Brun, Photography by Rémi Dargegen for Petrolicious

To me, the primary difference between us and the red Ferrari 250GT SWB team behind us, on the Tour Auto Optic2000, is that nobody would tell them, “Fantastic! That was my father’s first car!”

Of course, we would have preferred to hear about boys growing up in the back seats of Aston Martin DB 2/4s or Lancia Aurelias during the 1950s and ‘60s, but the most frequent car on French post-war roads was a tiny four-door: the Renault 4CV.

Despite the fantastic range of dream cars participating in this fantastic French tour, our little blue 4CV was still very popular. Organized by Patrick and Sylviane Peter beginning in 1992 as a retrospective of the Tour de France automobile, first held in 1899, the Tour Auto Optic2000 is an annual rally open to cars that originally competed between 1950 and the late ‘70s. For those who love sports and competition cars, this one is of the world’s most amazing road rallies: an open sky, beauty, speed, and a wonderful soundtrack crossing wonderful French landscapes, historic cities, castles and, of course, the tracks at Dijon-Prenois or Le Castellet.

alfa tour auto

With the modest 750cc engine mounted in the rear—thanks to Mr. Porsche, war prisoner in France in the late ‘40s, as the legend says and Renault’s engineers contest completely—was not really a competition car. But for young enthusiasts, around 1950, the Renault 4CV was the cheapest way to build a speed machine. Renault refused to sell competition versions, the R 1063, so enthusiasts would buy a simple R 1062 sport and transform it into a desirable 1063 version, with a bigger carburetor, a four speed gearbox, a camshaft with more overlap, or various upgraded elements.

Which is exactly what Mr. Adrien Maeght and his fellow mechanic Mr. Jean Gamot did in 1953 with our 2014 Tour Auto 4CV. With the amusing-to-drive Renault, those two gentlemen-drivers participated in premier road rallies between 1953 and 1955, like the 1953 Tour de Belgique (finishing 2nd, just after René Hugonet’s 4CV), 1953 and ‘54 Neige & Glace rally, a glorious snow race, and 1954 Mille Miglia. As Adrien–the world famous art collector, dealer, and former owner of the Cannes vintage car museum–where his 4CV was exhibited since 1978 until the museum closed ten years ago–agreed to lend Mr. François-Jean Daehn and me that iconic car, we decided to comtest the Tour Auto in our way, just to celebrate the Maeght & Gamot experience and as a testimony of a French passion for automotive pleasures. That’s how we decided that everything in the car must be “Made in France.” With the help of Renault, Monsieur Magazine, and Crooner Radio, we convinced French brands to join the project. From tools by Facom, leather jackets by Chapal, silk ties by Hermes, made-to-measure blazers by Smuggler and fine driver’s moccasins by JM Weston (both hand made in Limoges): everything was French, even our Navarre cigars!

But, in fact, we must admit that François-Jean and I would never have imagined the success of our blue, French car with number one on the bonnet. Why number one? Not because it was the oldest. An oh-so elegant green Jaguar XK120, driven by famous French enthusiast Etienne Raynaud and his brother Guillaume “Ray” Raynaud was from 1950, but certainly because the staff wanted us to be on time at night for the traditional Lanson’s champagne glass.

alfa tour auto

On many occasions, people came, passing brilliant Alfa Romeos, hypnotic Cobras or the marvelous number two racing OSCA from Argentina, just to ask us about the Renault, and, every time, beginning or concluding with the following, “I had one” or “that was my first car.” The Renault 4CV remains a star in France, carrying family memories and a very communicative popular happiness. And, if by any chance, we needed any advice or a mechanic’s help, there were always one or two people that knew the car perfectly!

On the road, the car is also rather idiosyncratic. It sits close to the road because of the thin wheels and tires, and needs to build momentum to carry on. The engine, delivering a soft and haunting sewing-machine melody, is brave, especially when climbing a hill. I must confess that our best moments were during a speed session on a closed road. Just as if we were competing in a world championship rally race, we were wearing gloves and helmets, stopwatch in hand. The engine roared and the noise was fantastic as the car strained. Somehow in unison, both my co-pilot and I looked at the dashboard at the same moment. The speed was close to… twenty mph! And so we had a good, memorable laugh.

As most of the competition can imagine, finishing the Tour Auto in Marseille, we didn’t had spent the same week as them. Of course, we ran the same kilometers, took part in all the special sections of the race, even on the track. Nevertheless, we had a different experience. For us there was no fight for victory or glory, we just enjoyed a fantastic road, the high springtime sun on France’s most beautiful landscapes, and a lot of smiles. It was just like the ‘50s. We’d open the rear bonnet to refresh the engine after a climb or tune the carburetor beside the road, and each morning we checked the sparkplugs, all the while with a feeling of timeless sensations, pleasures, and habits. Perhaps, thanks to our relative slowness, we have had much more fun than the others, frantically racing on “their” Tour Auto. So we realized with happiness that for a 4cv driver, in 1953, France must have seemed a very large country.

Absolute enthusiasts!!! Awesome car. A great way to do the Tour Auto, I hope to do it that way in the next few years sometime, enjoying the scenery and being retro in my 50’s Lancia Aurelia B20S Nardi.

Jerome

Dear Frederic Congratulation for this remarquable tale of the Tour Auto I hope you don’t mind if I molest your modesty but your forgot to mention that you were by far the most elegant (I would venture dandy) team in the Tour, and quite good drivers as well. I have a sweet and sour memory of the 4cv rushing just behind us at full speed in a hill climb race in the Jura. See you soon Jérôme

Dado

Name of your jacket please? Great article, btw!

Matthew Lange

It will a jacket by Chapal but I don’t know which one http://www.chapal.fr/

FyB

Thank you! Our fantastic “A1” leather jackets are made in France by Chapal http://www.chapal.fr/CHAPAL/index1.html Enjoy… Sincerely yours FyB

JB21

Thanks for another great article! While I enjoy 500hp sports cars as much as the next person, I often feel that automobiles today have become too fast too easy for their own good. But then, I guess the world just moves faster nowadays.

The Tour Auto is on my bucket list. While I dream of doing it in a Group IV spec Daytona, I reckon I would have just as much fun in ‘La Motte de Buerre’ 🙂 Great story Frédéric and great pics Rémi.

I’m sure, dear Matthew, that you perfectly know the origins of that nick-name “la motte de beurre” (“piece of butter”). Because Renaul gave, as a war damage, a large stock of sand colour paint, coming from… the Afrikakorps! Best, FyB

Gonzalo

I am restoring a 4CV (we have four really)! And I am very excited to read the article and look the pics! Thanks petrolicius.

Yoav Gilad

Let us know how it turns out!

Well, I am writing a blog with the advances of the restoration, unfortunately we proceed very slowly!

Dustin Rittle

This was a good finish to a already good article. Plenty of great pictures to go around. I don’t think most people would give a 4cv a second look but the one in this article is simply very stunning.

2022 alfa romeo giulia front exterior

Select a year

  • Lows Skimpy interior storage bins, snug rear seat, firm ride.
  • Verdict The Giulia isn't perfect, but it's one of the most fun-to-drive sedans out there.

What's New for 2022?

Last year's Ti Sport trim has been renamed Veloce for 2022, and a host of new standard features can be found throughout the Giulia lineup. Its infotainment system now benefits from standard navigation and a wireless phone charger, while an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front and rear heated seats, and an air-quality system round out the changes to the convenience features. Newly standard driver-assistance tech includes blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, and front and rear parking sensors.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia starts at $44,945 and goes up to $50,185 depending on the trim and options.

Since the Giulia's best trait is its crisp driving dynamics, we'd double down and go with the mid-range Ti model and spec the Performance package, which includes an active suspension and a mechanical limited-slip rear differential. Both elevate the Giulia's handling dynamics. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and we'd stick with that, but all-wheel drive is available and adds $2000 to the bottom line.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Giulia's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 280 horsepower, sounds intoxicating, and feels gutsy when driven hard. The Giulia pulls away from stoplights with zeal while singing soaring Italian arias. Our rear-wheel-drive test car's 5.7-second zero-to-60-mph time and an all-wheel-drive model's time of 5.5 seconds places the Giulia mid-pack in its segment in our acceleration testing; the Audi A4 did it in 5.2 seconds and the four-cylinder BMW 330i managed 5.4 seconds despite that both cars have less horsepower than the Alfa. All Giulias come with a drive-mode selector with three unique settings: Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency—cleverly making the acronym DNA—each of which alters the car's transmission, engine management, and steering feel. Agile and lively at all times, the Giulia is a driving enthusiast's sports sedan. The front tires are very responsive to driver inputs and speak clearly to the driver through the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Body roll is well controlled, and in hard corners the Giulia remains flat and predictable. It's easy to drive quickly and aggressively, but it's equally comfortable when driven sedately.

2022 alfa romeo giulia side exterior

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Among its turbocharged four-cylinder rivals, the Giulia has competitive fuel-efficiency numbers from the EPA, just shy of class leading. Rear-wheel drive models are rated at 24 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. All-wheel-drive models see a slight deficit at 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, but that's common in this class. In our real-world highway fuel-economy test, our rear-wheel-drive Ti test vehicle nearly delivered on its EPA number with a 32-mpg result. For more information about the Giulia's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior of the Giulia features soft-touch plastics, fine leather, and either textured metallic or genuine wood trimmings. It's an elegantly styled cabin, with a wide, sweeping dashboard that acts as a visor to shade the integrated infotainment screen from the sun. The seats are comfortable and well bolstered, especially the optional sport seats. Pack your sunnies, though: The Giulia's sun visors are laughably small and ineffective when driving head-on into the sun. The Giulia managed to fit five of our carry-on cases inside its trunk; with its rear seats folded, it managed 14, lagging segment leaders by one carry-on.

2022 alfa romeo giulia interior dash

Infotainment and Connectivity

All Giulias feature Alfa Romeo's 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system tucked in between the dashtop and the central climate-control vents. Three USB ports, an auxiliary input jack, in-dash navigation, and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity are all standard. The infotainment interface is relatively intuitive and offers customization options, but we found the navigation to be occasionally slow to update at crucial times during turn-by-turn directions and several of the on-screen icons are small and difficult to activate while driving. In addition to touchscreen commands, users can also interact with the system using an auxiliary rotary knob controller on the center console. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard and a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system is optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Alfa has included several driver-assistance features as standard, but those seeking more advanced semi-autonomous tech will find it requires an option package. For more information about the Giulia's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Warranty coverage may be an important issue to keep in mind when buying an Alfa Romeo ; the brand's reputation for reliability is among the worst in the business. Alfa Romeo's warranty coverage follows the same convention as most of its rivals, although Jaguar bucks the trend here with lengthier warranties. Giulia owners are treated to complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first year, but the 3-series offers better value here.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for one year or 10,000 miles

2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Competizione Sedan Exterior

2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Review

alfa tour auto

  • Strong turbocharged engines
  • Abundant features on base trim
  • High performance of the Quadrifoglio model
  • Rear seat space is tight for the class
  • Trunk space is adequate but awkward to access
  • Not as refined or as well finished as the top contenders in the segment

What's new

  • New headlight design
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster replaces previous analog gauges
  • Quadrifoglio trim gets a mechanical limited-slip rear differential instead of previous torque-vectoring unit
  • Part of the first Giulia generation introduced in 2017

Maybe you never liked the mainstream. Perhaps, in high school, you shunned football for rock climbing. You're eccentric. And you're passionate. Then you should give the Alfa Romeo Giulia a long, hard look. It's a luxury sedan that trades on its stunning good looks and lust-inducing performance. It makes willing sacrifices to space and practicality in service of beauty and driving pleasure. It's Italian. And it eschews the comparative stoicism of its Germanic rivals in favor of heart-on-sleeve driving focus.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.27 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: mild updates, same focus.

Despite a mild refresh for 2024 — new headlights and taillights and a new 12.3-inch digital instrument display — the Giulia remains largely the same curvy, quick and involving sport sedan it's been since its 2017 debut. With a 280-horsepower base engine, the Giulia is as rapid as it is pretty. The eight-speed automatic gearbox snaps off upshifts with bolt-action precision, while the meaty steering wheel transmits granular-levels of road information into the driver's hands. If your sport sedan has to be the kind that annoys your in-laws and makes the neighbors jealous then the Giulia is probably right up your alley. Just know that the driving glory and striking looks are accompanied by lagging tech and imperfect comfort. But these are petty complaints if you've come to the Giulia for its strengths. Read our Expert Rating for all the details.

Competitors to consider

There's an abundance of personalities in the small luxury class and most of them are solid choices. Among the best: Audi's A4, BMW's 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz's C-Class. And if you're looking outside Germany, you should also consider the Lexus IS 350 and Genesis G70.

Performance

Fuel economy, which giulia does edmunds recommend.

We suggest going with the Sprint trim, which comes well outfitted with heated front and rear seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charging pad. If performance is important, step up to the Veloce trim, which adds 19-inch wheels and a limited-slip differential.

Alfa Romeo Giulia vs. BMW 3 Series

BMW's 3 Series has so much in common with the Giulia that, on paper, they may seem identical. Both offer a turbocharged 2.0-liter base engine linked to a shiftable eight-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive. The BMW has a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, but that doesn't translate into meaningfully more interior space. The Giulia is the more powerful of the two and that gave it a slightly quicker 0-60 mph time in our testing. But the 3 Series counters with better fuel economy — both in the real world and according to the EPA.

Alfa Romeo Giulia vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

This is not a case of the impassive German vs. the emotional Italian. While the Giulia may be the more passion-inducing of the two, Mercedes' C-Class is far from a boring car. Its stunning interior, class-leading tech, and large, quiet cabin give it a level of luxury and refinement not present in the Giulia. But what the Benz offers in amenities it lacks in pure driving pleasure. Both of these cars are quick, yet if you're in the small luxury sedan class for a car that makes you want to brake late and grab a handful of gears, the Giulia is the better choice.

Alfa Romeo Giulia vs. Audi A4

Put simply, the A4 is a more practical car than the Giulia. It's bigger inside, offers a more family-friendly ride, is easier to climb in and out of, and is impeccably finished. Like the Giulia, it's getting long in the tooth relative to other competitors, but it's aging well. It supplies fewer thrills than the Giulia, however. The steering, in particular, lacks the Giulia's precision and feedback. Pick the A4 if you're after the safe choice. Go with the Giulia if you're after a love affair.

2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia First Impressions

alfa tour auto

The 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia is a small and stylish luxury sedan that injects some Italian flair into a segment dominated by cars from Germany. The Giulia was introduced in 2017, though it's undergone a handful of updates since then, with things like updated driver aids and a revised infotainment system. Alfa Romeo has revealed an updated 2024 Giulia overseas, and while nothing official has been announced, these updates could make their way to U.S.-bound Giulias for the 2024 model year.

In other markets, the 2024 Giulia receives some small but notable changes. The headlights have been redesigned, with LED lights that resemble those on the new Alfa Romeo Tonale crossover SUV. It's more than just style, as the headlights are adaptive and can adjust the beam on the fly to avoid shining into oncoming traffic. (Adaptive headlights were recently cleared by regulators for use on U.S. roads.) Inside, the Giulia gets a new digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch digital display. We've found the Giulia's tech to be a bit middling in the past, so we hope the update can add some polish to the in-car tech.

Fundamentally, the Giulia should remain the same stylish, sporty sedan it's been since it debuted. The Giulia has never been the most luxurious or comfortable car in its class, but a strong lineup of turbocharged engines — especially the most potent one used in the high-performance Quadrifoglio trim — and sharp handling make it engaging and fun to drive. But the competition is stiff, especially with all-new or newly updated rivals like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

It's possible we'll see updates to the Giulia for 2024 that should help keep it from withering on the vine.

According to the eligibility rules, any car having participated in the Tour de France Automobile between 1951 and 1973 (plus some exceptions), is admitted. The year featuring after the model is the year of its participation in the event. The same type from another year is accepted.

The fame of the event has always been attracting major car manufacturers but also many small workshops looking for sporting success. These cars are from popular cars at the time such as the Citroën 2CV or the Renault 4CV, to the most desired Ferraris via race prototypes.

100 YEARS, GONE IN A FLASH

Over a century of Italian passion and superior performance comes together in the 2024 Giulia Quadrifoglio, the most powerful sport sedan in our century-long history.

alfa tour auto

THE FINAL LAP

As we continue to accelerate new levels of performance with cutting-edge electrification, 2024 marks the last opportunity to get a Giulia Quadrifoglio with internal combustion engine technology. The last gas-powered Quadrifoglio models for North America will exit the Cassino plant in June 2024. Get yours before they are gone.

GIULIA QUADRIFOGLIO LIMITED ANNIVERSARY EDITION GIULIA QUADRIFOGLIO LIMITED ANNIVERSARY EDITION A GRAND CULMINATION

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Quadrifoglio, Alfa Romeo is excited to announce the limited Giulia Quadrifoglio 100th Anniversary Edition. Available Fall 2023, this is a vehicle whose empowered performance and exquisite design pay tribute to our century-long legacy of excellence. With features like leather and Alcantara ® -trimmed bucket seats featuring gold accent stitching and special 100th-anniversary badging, this is a worthy celebration of a monumental birthday. And, with only 100 vehicles available worldwide , it’s a must-have ride for the ultimate Alfa collector.

PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCE A TRIUMPH OF SPEED AND SPIRIT

Beneath the hood of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sits our 2.9L Twin-Turbocharged V6 engine, delivering a top speed of 191-mph—making it one of the fastest five-passenger vehicles on the planet .

DYNAMIC POWER DISTRIBUTION

Mechanical limited slip differential technology within the Giulia Quadrifoglio distributes power to each wheel by leveraging clutches in the rear differential. As power transfers from the wheels to the ground with efficiency, the vehicle reaches optimal performance and precision.

EIGHT-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The eight-speed automatic transmission at the heart of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio accounts for driver behavior, temperature, grade and stability control—providing quick acceleration response and optimized efficiency in nearly every driving situation.

Engage the exclusive Race Mode on the Class-Exclusive DNA Drive Mode Selector and let your heart go from 0 to 60 instantly. The drive mode activates the overboost function while disabling traction and stability control, freeing the suspension, exhaust, steering and gearshift to take you on the ride of your life.

DNA PRO DRIVE MODE SELECTOR

Effortlessly switch to the drive mode that suits you—whether it’s the responsive handling and forceful throttle of Dynamic Mode, the everyday utility of Natural Mode or the fuel consumption of Advanced Efficiency Mode.

DESIGN DESIGN SHATTERING THE MOLD

The aggressive profile of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is merciless as it stares you down. Track-inspired carbon fiber accents and distinct design details remind drivers that our racing roots run deep.

alfa tour auto

CARBON FIBER DRIVESHAFT

The lightweight strength, speed and durability of carbon fiber has long been a trademark of auto racing. The 2024 Giulia Quadrifoglio leverages carbon fiber in its driveshaft. It’s lighter weight than steel, boosting responsiveness and pushing the vehicle toward an optimal power-to-weight ratio.

alfa tour auto

CLASS-EXCLUSIVE ACTIVE AERO FRONT SPLITTER

The Giulia Quadrifoglio remains the only sedan on earth equipped with an active aero front splitter with two electric powered actuators, which increases the downforce being applied to the front to help achieve prime aerodynamics. When the vehicle reaches higher speeds, the front splitter starts controlling the air flow going under the vehicle to help reinforce stability, grip and overall performance.

alfa tour auto

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION

The Giulia Quadrifoglio handles expertly thanks to its independent suspension system. With the aid of adaptive damping technology, each wheel can move vertically independent of the others so the tires can remain in full contact with the road surface. The result is optimized performance that helps to improve ride quality for everyone involved.

alfa tour auto

50/50 WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION

A near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution is achieved in the 2024 Giulia Quadrifoglio with the careful placement and use of lightweight materials like carbon fiber. The almost evenly distributed weight across the front and rear axles allows for maximum responsiveness and enhanced handling.

alfa tour auto

HEART OF CARBON

Nothing comes close to our race-inspired interior cabin—a tribute to the enduring performance standards set by Alfa Romeo . The backplate of our available Sparco® Racing Front Seats frames are crafted entirely out of carbon fiber, the standard for performance-enhancing race materials. Beneath a layer of elegant leather trim, the steering wheel, door panel inlays and center console all feature carbon fiber trim.

  • Among the most beautiful Alfa Romeo designs to come from the pen of Ercole Spada
  • One of an estimated 217 examples of the highly coveted Sprint Zagato—a lightweight competition version of the Giulietta
  • A prolific hill climb entrant in 1960s Italian competition; accompanied by multiple entry sheets and matching event photos
  • History file contains copies of period Automobile Club d’Italia documentation

Weighing in at just 770 kilograms and revealed at the 1961 Geneva International Motor Show, the SZ was a competition-ready take on the Giulietta. It was designed with lightweight aluminium bodywork designed by Ercole Spada of Zagato. The beautifully proportioned and rounded coupé shell was small even by the standards of its two-door Giulietta Sprint sister model, following closely Spada’s vision for an agile and nimble sports car. The first models were made in December 1959 with production continuing into 1962, with an estimated 217 examples of the minimalist berlinetta falling into the hands of amateur racers and hill climb enthusiasts alike.

The example offered here, chassis “00124”, was confirmed by Alfa Romeo Museo Storico to have been completed by the factory on 27 January 1961, finished in Azzuro. The diminutive sports car was registered under the licence plate “SP 23123” while belonging to the gentleman driver and former AC Milan president, Mr Albino Buticchi.

Just a few short months into his ownership, the Alfa Romeo SZ was tested at the top level of competition, with Buticchi partnering Nicola Camilli under race number 27 to take on the 1961 Mille Miglia over 27 and 28 May—albeit through the informal “rally” format at road-legal speeds following the final no-holds-barred race in 1957. Buticchi then entered the Alfa Romeo in the Monza GT Grand Prix on 29 June, finishing 6th overall after completing 55 laps. The car was later driven by Buticchi in the 1961 Pescara 4 Hours, finishing 9th overall. The Italian driver’s final outing before selling the car was at the 1961 Pontedecimo-Giovi, finishing 1st in the 1,150 cc to 1,300 cc class.

In October 1961, ownership was transferred to Mr Carlo Cremascoli, who re-registered the car as “SV 35813” before embarking on a succession of hill climb entries. Between April 1962 and September 1963, Mr Cremascoli entered 12 events including Cesena Sestiere, Castell’ Arquato-Vernasca, Bobbio-Penice, Coppa Renzo Cantoni, and more—the full race list can be viewed in the car’s accompanying history file. In 1985, the Alfa Romeo was sold again, and re-registered in the region of Imperia, Italy.

Now finished in red over a black leather interior, with its period-correct Borrani Bi-Metal wheels, this Giulietta SZ offers irresistible 1960s Alfa Romeo charm complete with enviable competition history and continuous, documented ownership history. The peppy performance and excellent road manners of this delightful and rare racer would make it just as at home on early morning Sunday drives as it would in the many historic motorsport classes for which it is eligible—not least the forthcoming Tour Auto 2023, organised to celebrate Zagato.
