Asian Tour announces major investment with addition of 10 new marquee events

The new events will be played annually across Asia, the Middle East and Europe and will join established Asian Tour tournaments to comprise a 25-event season from 2022; Greg Norman appointed CEO of LIV Golf Investments as announcement is made

Greg Norman

The Asian Tour schedule is set for a major revamp next year with the addition of a series of 10 new marquee events.

The new tournaments will be staged annually over the next 10 years with a commitment of over $200m (£145.4m) to support playing opportunities and prize funds from a newly-formed company, LIV Golf Investments, backed by the Private Investment Fund which operates on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia.

The events will be played across Asia, the Middle East and Europe and will join established Asian Tour tournaments to comprise a 25-event season from 2022.

There are plans to attract an international field of headline talent to the new events through an open eligibility category regardless of Tour affiliation so opportunities are available to the broadest cross section of players.

Former world No 1 Greg Norman has been appointed as CEO of LIV Golf Investments and he said: "This is only the beginning.

"LIV Golf Investments has secured a major capital commitment that will be used to create additive new opportunities across worldwide professional golf. We will be a cooperative and respectful supporter of the game at every level, and today's announcement alongside the Asian Tour is the first example of that.

"I have been a staunch supporter and believer in playing and developing golf in Asia for more than four decades. The Asian Tour is a sleeping giant and we share ambition to grow the series and unlock what we believe is significant untapped potential.

Asian Development Tour kick starts 2024 with All Thailand Golf Tour tie up

asian tour development

In advance of its full schedule announcement for 2024, the Asian Development Tour (ADT) is delighted to confirm the return of the ADT–All Thailand Partnership Trophy and the Singha Laguna Phuket Open next season.

This comes in tandem with the All Thailand Golf Tour (ATGT) releasing its full schedule – that confirmed both tournaments will be jointly-sanctioned by the two prospering circuits.

The ADT–All Thailand Partnership Trophy, won by Thailand’s Kosuke Hamamoto in July, will be staged from May 2-5, and offer total prize money of THB3million (approximately US$86,690). The venue will be confirmed later.

The following week, from May 9-12, the Singha Laguna Phuket Open will be hosted by Laguna Golf Phuket (pictured) – an Asian Tour Destinations member – where the purse will be THB4million (approximately US$115,590). Indonesia’s rising star Naraajie Ramadhanputra raised the trophy in May.

Ken Kudo , Associate Director, Partnerships, Asian Tour said: “As we finalise details for the 2024 season, we are thrilled to be able confirm that the ADT–All Thailand Partnership Trophy and the Singha Laguna Phuket Open will be back.

“Both events were extremely successful and popular this year and will once again be important stops for our membership in the new season. The fact that we are able to announce this so soon is a reflection of the strong relationship we have with our long-standing partner the All Thailand Golf Tour. More news on our calendar will be revealed in due course.”

Both tournaments will feature a Monday qualifier, which are open to ADT members, and will see a maximum of 12 players qualify. A total of 60 places are available for ADT players in each tournament, which will boast starting fields of 144 players. They will be broadcast live on local television.

The 2023 ADT season came to a memorable conclusion at the beginning of this month when Thailand’s Denwit Booribonsub won the Aramco Invitational.

That allowed him to top the ADT Order of Merit and secure his Asian Tour card for 2024, something that the top-10 on Merit list are all rewarded with.

Remarkably, just two weeks later Denwit went on the claim the Saudi Open presented by Public Investment Fund – the final event of the Asian Tour’s season. It is the first time that a player achieved that double and was another example of the myriad of opportunities offered by the ADT – the Asian Tour’s burgeoning feeder circuit. This year it featured 12 events offering lucrative overall prize money of US$1.38million.

The new year is expected to see an increase in the number of events as well as greater prize money.

Asian Development Tour to conclude 2022 season with USD200,000 Taifong Open

asian tour development

Making a welcome return to the schedule after a three-year hiatus, the Taifong Open in Chinese Taipei will act as the decisive, final event of the 2022 Asian Development Tour (ADT).

To be staged at Taifong Golf Club in Changhua county on December 22-25, the tournament will see a 25% increase in its prize fund to USD200,000, making it the joint richest event on the ADT. When the tournament was last staged on the ADT at the end of 2019, the purse was USD160,000.

The leading 10 players, not otherwise exempted, on the final 2022 ADT Order of Merit following the conclusion of the Taifong Open will earn their Asian Tour cards for the 2023 season.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour, said: “Given that the Taifong Open will once more bring down the curtain on the ADT season, it’s a fabulous development that we’ll have a significant rise in prize money.

“With Asian Tour cards on the line and so much at stake, it’s fitting that the Taifong Open will offer the equal highest purse on the Tour, reflecting the importance of the week.”

In the 2019 event, Thailand's Donlaphatchai Niyomchon emerged triumphant in what was the sixth year in succession that the Taifong Open had been part of the ADT. Previous winners of the Taifong Open were local star Chan Shih-chang (2018 and 2014); Thai Pannakorn Uthaipas (2017); American Johannes Veerman (2016) and Thai Rattanon Wannasrichan (2015).

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai currently tops the ADT Order of Merit with three victories this season, earning him a battlefield promotion to the Asian Tour for the remainder of this season.

The 2022 ADT season boasts a total of 15 events with three remaining: the Selangor Masters (November 23-26, Seri Selangor Golf Club, Malaysia), Saudi Open (December 8-10, Riyadh Golf Club, Saudi Arabia) and Taifong Open (December 22-25, Taifong Golf Club, Chinese Taipei).

Golf Saudi Welcomes Asian Development Tour

asian tour development

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: History will be made next week when the Asian Development Tour (ADT) comes to Saudi Arabia for the first time.

To be held at the Golf Saudi-managed Riyadh Golf Club, the US$200,000 PIF Saudi Open will take place from December 8-10, featuring players from the ADT as well as professionals and amateurs in the Middle East and North Africa who are registered with a golf club.

The fact that the PIF Saudi Open is being played on the ADT for the first time is a sign of strengthening ties between the Asian Tour and Golf Saudi.

As part of a 10-year partnership that Golf Saudi has entered into with the Asian Tour, the US$5 million PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers has become the opening event on the Asian Tour’s annual calendar.

The PIF Saudi Open will also see the participation of a raft of up-and-coming players from the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab countries, in addition to members of Saudi Arabia’s National Team, who have gone from strength to strength in recent years, as part of Golf Saudi’s wider Mass Participation programme to grow golf in the Kingdom.

“All of us at both the Saudi Golf Federation and Golf Saudi are incredibly excited about next week’s seventh edition of the PIF Saudi Open. Each year we host the tournament, it gets bigger and better,” said Majed Al Sorour , Deputy Chairman and CEO of the Saudi Golf Federation and Golf Saudi, an Executive Member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation.

“I am especially proud how each edition provides Saudi and Arab golf players the opportunity to participate in a top tier competition in their home country and be able to not only develop their skill levels, but also to test themselves and go head-to-head against players from different countries in the Middle East, North Africa and now the Asian Development Tour in a competitive environment.”

Managed by Golf Saudi and playing to a par of 72, Riyadh Golf Club is 20 minutes from Riyadh. The course, opened in 2005, is known for its undulating terrain, wide fairways and manicured greens.

Al Sorour said: “By hosting tournaments such as the PIF Saudi Open, we hope to encourage and facilitate greater uptake in the game and offer our elite golfers the chance to compete against the very best.

“So, thanks must go to our strategic partners the Asian Tour for helping us to achieve that aim, as their involvement will mean the strongest player field in the PIF Saudi Open’s history.”

The tournament will witness the participation of the most prominent Saudi players, including the first and only Saudi professional player Othman Almulla , along with other National Team players: Abdulrahman Al-Mansour , Faisal Salhab and Saud Al Sharif .

A lot will be at stake for those players as the PIF Saudi Open also represents a qualification opportunity for the 2023 PIF Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers, which will be held in February.

The PIF Saudi Open is part of a series of events that Golf Saudi holds annually to raise awareness of the game in the Kingdom as well as developing home-grown talent.

By holding such events, Golf Saudi is looking to increase the number of golfers throughout the Kingdom within all age groups and demographics. By working with other sports federations and the Ministry of Sport, Golf Saudi – the commercial development arm of the Saudi Golf Federation – is looking to underline the wider benefit of sports participation more generally as part of Saudi Arabia’s progress towards its Vision 2030 goals to improve its citizens quality of life.

Meanwhile, the ADT has been a springboard to the Asian Tour for dozens of players, including reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Kim Joo-hyung of Korea and American John Catlin , a four-time winner on the Asian Tour.

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
