Great tour!

Our guide Andres was wonderful and full of knowledge on the Barragan sites we visited. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Mexico City with an interest in art and architecture.

A great opportunity to see inside a private property. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable on the architect, the property and related aspects of the government/social context.

We took the Southern Barragan Tour yesterday. Like the Northern Barragan Tour was 3 days ago, this was excellent. Paulina provided an architect + interior designer's professional insight, interpreting at Capuchins and guiding at Pedregal and Gilardi. She directed our fantastic lunch experience, and she and driver Juanito stayed late while we ordered takeout from the same place, then drove us to our next Airbnb. Juanito kept our 3 bags of soft luggage safe all day in the trunk of the charming convertible Beetle. Paulina introduced us to and debriefed us on the sites while driving, and even squeezed in two art gallery visits enroute to Casa Gilardi. Very professional all round.

one of the highlights of our trip to mexico city. great insight into barragan's architecture, martin was a wonderful guide

We actually did Barragan Northern and Southern Tours. The buildings needed the excellent explanation of the tour guides enroute to and at the sites, because the buildiings have been adjusted in some ways, to survive. We also benefitted enormously from their logistical planning- transport, access, lunch.. And we were inspired by the other couples' questions and discussions with the guides and us. We prefer shared tours.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the City Neighborhoods tour. Louis was a wonderful guide for the day, full of interesting and relevant info on city history and the current challenges the city is facing. CDMX is huge and congested and our driver “the other Louis” piloted us to both the southern and northern reaches of the city, where we toured some wonderful neighborhoods on a busy Saturday, walked through numerous vibrant markets and several museums and had lunch at a great taqueria. It was a fun day, and the three additional tour guests in our VW bus helped create a lively congenial tour.

Mexico City’s VW Beetle Bugs have been superseded by new – and improved – taxi services

VW Beetle Taxi Green in Mexico City

For decades, yellow-colored VW Beetle Bugs were an icon of Mexico City’s street landscape.  Then, in the 1990s, as part of an ecology-drive, the capital’s government ordered cabbies to have their vehicle engines altered so that they would run on unleaded gasoline, and to repaint them from yellow to green and white.

Some years later, as part of a program to modernize taxi services in the capital and reduce taxi crime, laws were passed forcing Mexico City’s cabbies to operate only four-door cars. Financial incentives were put in place to encourage those drivers who operated the VW Beetles to upgrade, and all new taxi licenses were only issued to owners of four-door vehicles.  They also changed the color scheme to white, with a red stripe surround.

Throughout the period of transition, some green and white VW Beetles remained operational.  However, officials announced that the last of old Beetle taxi licenses would expire by the end of 2012, and would not be renewed.

With the passing of an era, those who have known Mexico City for decades might take a moment to reminisce about the ‘old days’, when all street cabs were VW Beetles: with the front passenger seat removed, leaving only the bench seat at the back for passengers, and the open space in front for baggage, or even additional passengers—at the taxi driver’s discretion.  Beetles were never the safest of taxis to travel in, but were an experience to behold, nonetheless.

The last two decades has witnessed significant transformation in the taxi landscape across Mexico City.

“ Sitio ” (taxi rank) cabs have always had four doors, even in the old days, but they were more expensive and travelers back then hailed a ‘ Vocho ’ when they could find one. Today, all cabs are the more comfortable four-door sedans, whether they are tied to a Sitio , or roaming the streets seeking passing trade.

The color scheme has also changed again — twice — since the green beetle-bugs were phased out: street cabs were first painted in a distinct burgundy and gold (and, in a bid to stamp-out taxi-related crime, the city took extensive measures to re-license all taxi vehicles and carefully vet drivers before re-issuing driver permits during this period) and then in late 2014 officials announced a new color scheme for cabs in the capital: white and pink .

Along with the change of vehicles and their livery colors has come changes in the way people hire their taxi ride.  While street cabs remain plentiful, very affordable and convenient for ad-hoc trips, increasing numbers of people today phone a taxi company and have a cab pick them up from home and even if they are at out, or from work. More recently, App-Cab services (like Uber and Cabify) — which use a smartphone App to deliver taxis on-demand — have become increasingly popular, especially among the middle-class youth, working professionals, and women.

Fares for cabs arranged by phone and Uber are generally higher than using roaming street cabs, but are still affordable.  The growth of taxi cab firms and the advent of universal cell phone and smartphone usage has made it possible to easily arrange ‘cabs on demand’, which is not only safer, but actually more convenient.

While some may lament the final passing of Vocho cabs in Mexico City, the reality is that taxi travel in the capital has improved enormously over the last decade.  Taxis are more plentiful, more comfortable, safer, and the extensive choice of taxi firms arranging cabs ‘on demand’ by telephone  or by App has created a very healthy and competitive market for cab travel here.  Add to this, Mexico City continues to offer residents and visitors some of the lowest fares for taxi travel in any capital city.

Cab drivers in the provinces continue to operate using a plethora of different vehicles (including VW Beetles) and it’s likely that the Bugs will continue to ply the streets of colonial cities like Taxco until they can no longer be physically repaired, or until state legislators take action to retire them, as Mexico City has.

The bug is endangered in most parts of the world.

But in the northern hills of Mexico City, the Volkswagen Beetle lives on.

This is Vocholandia, the home of surviving Vochos.

In This Mexican Neighborhood, Locals Say ¡Viva el Beetle!

A northern community in Mexico City cannot give up on the famous 1960s hippie-favorite Volkswagen.

By Zolan Kanno-Youngs

Photographs and Video by Marian Carrasquero

Reporting from Mexico City

Rusted and stripped of their right seat, the cars parked in queues rounding street corners serve as the unofficial taxi in the hillside neighborhoods in Cuautepec in Mexico’s capital. The curvy symbol of the 1960s hippie era is admired — even decorated and named — by residents who say the car represents their resilience and work ethic.

They can be spotted throughout Mexico City, but they swarm the vibrant streets in Cuautepec, where Beetles can be heard climbing steep hills past residents relaxing on their roofs and dogs standing guard on balconies.

One of the Cuautepec’s many mechanics is usually just a couple blocks away. The smell of car exhaust fumes fills the streets as yellow, green, red and purple Beetles buzz by one another at intersections.

The front of a vintage Beetle with a license plate that reads 227-WFG.

“It is not a standard car like any other,” said Yolanda Ocampo, 45, as she admired her graying 1982 Beetle parked outside the pharmacy where she works. The brake pedal can be stiff, but owning the Beetle means “your car is tough.”

“We love the Vochos so much,” she added.

There are competing theories for the car’s beloved nickname, “Vocho.” Some say it is derived from the Spanish word for bug, “bicho,” and combined the first two letters of Volkswagen. Others say it is just a shortened slang version of Volkswagen.

Though the German Classic Beetle was officially discontinued in 2003, the classic Beetle has long been a source of pride for Mexico, and specifically Cuautepec. Originally designed for Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, Volkswagen sold hundreds of thousands of Beetles in the 1960s as the car became an emblem of anti-establishment counterculture.

Eventually, Volkswagen stopped imports to the United States when it could not keep pace with crash test and emission standards. The company began to farm out production to other countries. In 1964, it opened a factory in Puebla, Mexico, where it produced Beetles until 2003, and continued to build the sleeker New Beetles until 2019, when Volkswagen ended the bug’s reign entirely.

In Cuautepec, most of the cars on the road are still the classic models.

“The good ones are the old ones,” said Eduardo Jiménez León, whose son gifted him a Beetle previously used as a taxi.

For residents like Mr. Jiménez León, 73, the Vocho’s popularity is a matter of practicality. The Beetle’s engine is in the back rather than the front, making it easier to drive up Cuautepec’s steep hills. The cars marked with green and white paint are still used as unofficial taxis in the neighborhood. Many visitors who choose to take a gondola lift to the top of the city’s northern hills elect to ride back down in a Vocho for a more retro transport.

“They say that it drives even just on the pure smell of gasoline,” said Uriel Mondragón, a local mechanic who said 40 percent of his customers own a Beetle. “It is not like a new car. This car does not run out of gas.”

For others, owning a Beetle is more about what the car represents.

In Cuautepec, the car has tied generations of families together, often passed down from parent to child.

“Our beloved Vocho has become part of the Mexican folklore thanks to its unique personality, quality, and reliability,” Álea M. Lozada, a spokeswoman for Volkswagen in Mexico, said in a statement. “It is a honor to be the last plant in which this iconic model was assembled.”

Each Beetle in the neighborhood has its own personality and name; owners post their car’s moniker at the top of windshields or on its side. On a recent trip to Cuautepec, one Beetle was named Ashley. Miranda chugged along a couple blocks away. Another had “New York” spray-painted along its side.

Custom designs and decorations are also coveted in the Vocho community.

A taxi driver drove a Vocho with fake 100,000 dollar bills pasted on one side. Another had a Scooby-Doo doll installed on his trunk. Stars adorned the windshield of another Beetle.

Ms. Ocampo said she prefers driving her Beetle more than her brand-new SEAT Ibiza car, a supermini. For her, owning a Vocho is a way to push back on gender stereotypes that were prevalent in her home when she was growing up. She often heard men in Cuautepec questioning whether women could handle the Beetle.

“How is it possible for a woman to drive a Volkswagen because of the heavy steering wheel?” Ms. Ocampo recalled people asking. But now, “if there is a Volkswagen they are not astonished, right? So the truth is that I am proud to drive a Volkswagen.”

But since the Beetle is no longer in production, it can be hard to find the right parts when repairs are needed.

As a result, the cars are often made up of mismatching colored parts. One Beetle might have a green hood, a blue passenger door and a yellow trunk — signs of past repair jobs and an effort to match the vibrant houses in the neighborhood.

Beetlemania is not limited to the Vocholandia neighborhood.

Berenzain Amaya, a tattoo artist at Octattoo Studio in another part of Mexico City, says he has inked the car on at least 10 die-hard Vocho fans.

“It’s hard to explain because if you’re from another country and see this German car, it’s kind of weird, but I think Mexico is a weird place,” Mr. Amaya said. “There’s a lot of things that aren’t too common to see in other countries. This is part of the culture.”

The cars have been a part of Mario Gamboa’s family for decades. Along with his brother, Alejandro, Mr. Gamboa, 45, runs a repair shop in Mexico City, Grillos Racing, which predominantly serves owners of Beetles. But Mr. Gamboa and his brother also outfit the cars with more powerful engines and shiny, new exteriors for drag racing events in the city.

It was a family tradition started by their parents, who in their mid-60s still race Beetles.

The family owns 15 Beetles altogether. Mr. Gamboa himself owns seven. On a recent afternoon, the brothers said they were getting ready to show off at a car show for the best of the best Beetles.

He has been attached to the Beetle since he was a child.

“All the people in Mexico learn to drive in a Volkswagen,” Mr. Gamboa said. “All the families have a Volkswagen. If you don’t have a Volkswagen, then maybe your uncle or your cousin or your grandma does.”

Great tour of Mexico City with a knowledgeable guide - fun and we learned a ton!

The tour gave us a great overview of Mexico City -- the neighborhoods, the architecture, and more. Andres was a wonderful tour guide -- he's an experienced architect who tailored the tour for me and my daughter - so we both got what we wanted. the VW van was adorable, comfortable, and fun. Definintely recommend it!

Our experience with Barragán was amazing. The in-depth knowledge we got can only be offered by such a team. I can totally recommend visit la Cuadra and the Torres de Satélite this way!

Paulina and Luis were knowledgeable, flexible, warm and kind. We laughed a lot and had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend them.

beetle tour mexico city

Andres and Luis were fantastic. It was certainly our best day in Mexico City. Driving around Mexico in a classic VW is unparalleled. Highly recommend this tour to anyone, especially with an interest in architecture and art.

Miguel is not only an amazing guide and a true Barragan-nerd but also an architect himself and an architectural professor. This is the reason that his full-day tour covers the past but also contemporary projects. Even his tour is great scheduled he adjusts on the groups demand. The VW beetle and his charismatic driver Louis will drive you in style :)

A tour I would recommend to anyone who is interested in the work of Luis Barragán. I was picked up from my hotel by a very smiley driver and Paulina, my guide who is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The tour felt very tailored to me as I am not an architect so I wasn’t too interested in the technicalities of the buildings but more the general design and ideas/inspiration behind them. We had the entire Cuadra San Cristobál to ourselves - I felt very lucky to be able to see it in peace and quiet.

The 2024 MLB Mexico City Series: Everything You Need To Know

From how to watch to which teams are playing, here is a rundown of every key detail about the 2024 MLB World Tour: Mexico City Series.

General view of Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium where the players of the Diablos Rojos de Mexico baseball team train.

The 2024 MLB season opened in Seoul, South Korea , where the Dodgers and Padres split a two-game set at the Gocheok Sky Dome. This coming weekend, the Astros and Rockies will meet at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú (Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium) in Mexico City, Mexico for the second international series of the regular season.

The Houston Astros have gotten off to a rough start in 2024, with a 7-19 record that has them in last place in the AL West. The Colorado Rockies have an identical 7-19 record, although their poor performance hardly counts as a surprise.

Here is a rundown of everything you need to know about the second annual MLB World Tour: Mexico City Series.

What Happened in the Last Mexico City Series?

The first Mexico City Series was scheduled to be played between the Diamondbacks and Padres in April 2020 but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ad – content continues below

Three years later, the first regular season MLB series in Mexico City finally took place, with the Padres sweeping the Giants in two games.

Thanks to the high altitude of Mexico City, Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú proved to be a true hitter’s paradise. The two teams combined to slug 15 home runs over two games.

Who Is Playing in the 2024 Mexico City Series?

The Astros and Rockies will face off in the 2024 Mexico City Series. The Rockies will be the official home team for both games, which is somewhat surprising considering Houston is significantly closer than Denver to Mexico City.

Mexico City and Houston are both in the Central Time Zone, whereas Denver is in the Mountain Time Zone. However, because Mexico City does not observe daylight savings, it is currently the same time in Mexico City and Denver, while Houston is an hour ahead.

The Rockies might also feel more at home than the Astros given the high altitude of Mexico City. Mexico City is 7,350 feet above sea level, while Denver is 5,280 feet above sea level. The highest point in Houston is about 150 feet above sea level.

When Does the Mexico City Series Start?

After traveling to Mexico, both teams will have an off day on Friday. The first game of the series begins at 4:05 p.m. local time on Saturday, April 27 while the second game kicks off at 2:05 p.m. local time on Sunday, April 28.

Here is the complete schedule for the series:

Where Will the Series Take Place?

For the second year in a row, the teams will face off at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City. It is the home stadium of the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League.

While this will be the second MLB regular season series in Mexico City, it will be the seventh regular season series played in Mexico. The five previous series took place at the Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico in 1996, 1999, 2018, and twice in 2019.

Players To Keep an Eye On

Unfortunately, Astros starter José Urquidy has been on the injured list with a forearm strain all season and won’t be able to pitch in the series. The right-hander was born in Mazatlán, Mexico – not particularly close to Mexico City, but still, it would have been nice if Urquidy had the chance to pitch in his home country. He appeared in two games for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic last year.

That’s how it’s done 🔥 José Urquidy and Team Mexico are heading to Miami for the WBC Quarterfinals! pic.twitter.com/MWPmdjXtBV — Houston Astros (@astros) March 15, 2023

Astros players to watch in the Mexico City Series include Jose Altuve , who is making a case for his second MVP with a strong start to the season; Yordan Alvarez , whose incredible strength could play up in such a hitter-friendly environment; 2024 breakout sensation Ronel Blanco , who is set to start the first game of the series; and All-Star left-hander Framber Valdez , who will return from the injured list to start on Sunday.

As for the Rockies, Nolan Jones is a name to watch as the promising young outfielder tries to bust out of his early-season slump. Jones has the raw power to put on a show at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú.

The Rockies will send Cal Quantrill to the mound in the first game of the series. Austin Gomber will take on Valdez in a lefty-on-lefty matchup for game two. Both Rockies hurlers are still seeking their first wins of the season.

How To Watch the MLB Mexico City Series

The first game of the Mexico City Series will air on each team’s regular broadcaster: Space City Home Network for the Astros and the Rockies.tv in-market streaming service for the Rockies. Out-of-market fans can watch as usual on MLB.tv.

ESPN will air a national broadcast of the second game.

How to buy madonna tickets for 2024 tour.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Madonna is wrapping up her current concert tour over the next few days with a trilogy of shows in Mexico City. Prices have been climbing over recent days, so you'll have to be sharp if you want to buy Madonna tickets for these dates while you can for the The Celebration Tour.

Before she takes her final bow of the Celebration Tour concert series in April 2024, Madonna will have performed 52 shows across 27 cities in the US, Canada, and Mexico. While many dates earlier in the tour were available for under $100, these final dates will cost you at least $245 at the time of writing. Still, it's a few grand cheaper than the Swifties have been paying this year.

  • More events: Olivia Rodrigo tickets | Taylor Swift tickets | Adele tickets | Rolling Stones tickets

With the concert series being a retrospective celebration of her iconic career, The Celebration Tour's setlist unsurprisingly includes plenty of Madonna's timeless hits. Songs like "Like a Prayer," "Vogue," "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," and "Like a Virgin" have been performed across various dates on her tour.

We've got you covered if you're still looking for tickets to Madonna's Celebration Tour. Here's our breakdown of Madonna's remaining 2024 tour schedule, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket prices. You can also browse the available tickets for sale on StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Madonna 2024 tour schedule

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

How to buy tickets for Madonna's 2024 concert tour

Madonna tickets have been on sale for a while now, so all original ones via Ticketmaster are long gone.

However, Madonna tickets are still available through verified resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

How much do Madonna tickets cost?

The price for standard original tickets to Madonna's 2024 tour varies depending on date, location, and demand. For example, concert dates in major cities like New York City tend to be more expensive.

Standard original tickets still available on Ticketmaster a few weeks ago  were comparable to prices on verified resale platforms. However, the remaining original tickets have all been snapped up though, so resale vendors are your only hope now.

The Celebration Tour originally had VIP tickets available for premium prices. Madonna's 2024 concert series had The Immaculate VIP Package, Iconic VIP Package), You Can Dance Premium Ticket Package, and Where's The Party Premium Ticket Package. The prices for original tickets for each package on Ticketmaster started at $1,750, $895, $545, and $475, respectively.

Who is opening for Madonna's tour?

Madonna has not announced any additional opening acts for her 2024 concert dates. However, the artist is joined by Bob the Drag Queen, a special guest in each of her shows, who helps introduce the concert and interacts with Madonna as the emcee.

Madonna's 2024 tour began with the international leg in Europe, so the only remaining concerts in The Celebration Tour outside the United States are in Mexico.

In April, she'll have five performances in Mexico City, where she'll take her final bow of The Celebration Tour on April 26.

If you’re unfamiliar, the popular Internet star first found fame with a 2017 viral clip, in which she and her friend hilariously got lost on a hill, dubbing them “Las Perdidas” on social media due to their amusing reaction to the dangerous situation. She then became the first openly trans woman to win a Mexican reality TV show last year!

M Is for Mexico: Madonna Justifies Her Love for Frida Kahlo, Brings Celeb Guests Onstage at Mexico City Concert

Madonna is performing a series of five concerts in Mexico City this week as part of her Celebration Tour, an occasion that the Queen of Pop has taken to reiterate her love for Mexican culture and one of its most iconic figures: the famous painter Frida Kahlo.

"As you know, I have a great history, a long history with Mexico," the superstar said Saturday night at the Palacio de los Deportes during her performance of "Burning Up," according to La Razón . "When I was a girl, I discovered Frida Kahlo. I went to the only museum that existed in Detroit, and there were Diego Rivera murals everywhere, but to be honest, I was more interested in a small picture in a corner, of a beautiful woman with her hair gathered in braids and intense eyes."

Previously, Madonna met with the Kahlo family on Thursday at their home in the city neighborhood of El Pedregal, and wrote an emotional dedication in the guest book expressing she was inspired by the iconic painter, who she considers to be her "soul mate," reported Mexican newspaper Reforma .

Just as she's been doing at different stops on her tour, the Material Girl has had special guests in Mexico during the performance of "Vogue" to judge a handful of dancers in a dance competition. On Saturday, at the first of her shows at the Palacio de los Deportes, she had Mexican comedian Guillermo Rodriguez, known as Jimmy Kimmel's sidekick on ABC's late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live!

"When you go to a Madonna concert and she CALLS YOU UP ON STAGE!!!," says a shared post from Rodriguez and Kimmel on Instagram with a video of the moment in the show.

The second guest was Cuban actor Alberto Guerra, who lives in Mexico. He shared the moment on his social media, along with some snapshots to immortalize the moment. "Thank you Madonna, for giving me the memory of a night that will live forever in my heart," the actor wrote in English on Instagram .

On Tuesday (April 23), the surprise guest was Mexican influencer Wendy Guevara, a trans actress who won Televisa's reality show La Casa de los Famosos in 2023, and who was greeted with cheers from the audience when she got onstage. "And a dream come true," Guevara captioned a photo of her with Madonna on Instagram.

Madonna's final performances in Mexico City are on Wednesday and Friday. It's unknown if she will have more guests at press time.
