Back on the Road: Ben Shapiro to Kick Off Fall Lecture Tour at UMich

Leftists, beware-your safe spaces won’t be safe while Ben Shapiro is on campus at the University of Michigan on Tuesday, November 15.

As part of Young America’s Foundation’s Fred and Lynda Allen Lecture Series, the lively lecture will be held at 7:00 PM in the Rackham Auditorium. Free tickets will become available soon.

His most recent lecture, which took place at Iowa State University last semester, drew more than 2,500 students, and hundreds had to be turned away due to fire code.

For nearly a decade, Shapiro has worked exclusively with Young America’s Foundation, speaking on more than 60 campuses and reaching audiences of hundreds of millions online.. Shapiro has been YAF’s most requested speaker for years, and students frequently cite the opportunity to bring him to campus as one of the highlights of their college years.

Would you pay $300 to meet Ben Shapiro?

The conservative pundit and others will take the stage at a legendary nashville venue next month. tickets, however, aren’t cheap.

Upcoming performances at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, include the Gatlin Brothers, Clint Black and the Indigo Girls — and Ben Shapiro.

One of these things is not like the others.

The usual performers at the Ryman are world-famous musicians. Shapiro is a conservative pundit, podcaster and author.

But the Daily Wire, the company that Shapiro co-owns, is betting that people will pay upward of $77 to watch lively banter between Shapiro and other conservative media personalities, and that others will pay more than $300 to meet them.

The Oct. 12 event is called “Backstage Live at the Ryman” and it’s a live version of a regular roundtable discussion between Shapiro and his Daily Wire colleagues. The lineup at the Oct. 12 event in Nashville will also feature Matt Walsh, Michael Knowles, Candace Owens, Andrew Klavan and Jeremy Boreing.

It’s unknown if Shapiro and company can rock the house like singer Boz Scaggs, who performs at the Ryman the night before, but it’s a bold move by a conservative media company that previously announced its intention to expand into entertainment.

Earlier this year, Boreing, the Daily Wire’s CEO and co-founder, told Axios that there’s a need for entertainment for conservatives that is made by people who respect their values. A previous Daily Wire Backstage Event, staged virtually in January, attracted more than 300,000 viewers, Axios reported. That event featured the debut of a film, an action thriller about a high school student who takes on four shooters.

And the company is working with Gina Carano , formerly of the Disney+ show “The Mandalorian,” on a movie that’s been called a “ revenge thriller ” and will begin filming in October in Utah, Tennessee and Montana.

In announcing the expansion into entertainment, Shapiro said that while conservatives will occasionally engage in a skirmish of the culture war, they largely live within the same culture of the left. When it comes to entertainment, that leaves them the choice of tuning out altogether or finding alternatives, he wrote.

“The problem is that Republicans won’t win anybody over by simply disengaging. We need those who aren’t political to engage with a different sort of content: content that is edgy and entertaining and awesome, but that doesn’t actively work to undermine the very values that have made this country exceptional. We need to give people options.”

In branching out into entertainment like Carano’s new film project, Shapiro said the Daily Wire will produce content “that won’t mock your values.”

“Now it’s time to fight back in the culture — it’s time to blow up the Death Star that is the left-wing monopoly on entertainment, and to provide a replacement for your dollars, so that you’re not paying the people who want to see your values disappear,” he wrote.

It’s unclear if the Daily Wire team will take their show on the road. (The company recently moved from Los Angeles to Nashville.) By the end of Friday, the first day of ticket sales, the company tweeted that “a small amount” of tickets remained.

Frontmen should be fun. Obnoxious, pretentious, eccentric… yes, all good words when it comes to the face of your favorite rock band. So when singer Matty Healy introduces the 1975 as “the greatest band on the planet,” or gnaws on a slab of raw meat or mimics masturbation more than once in one concert, at least he’s giving you something to talk about.

The retro flair of “Looking for Somebody (To Love)” and disco bliss of “Happiness” kicked the concert off with a punch, but it’s the new album’s slower moments that work best live. “When We Are Together,” an acoustic ballad that dubs Central Park “SeaWorld for trees,” was perfectly loose, and shoegazy slow-burner “About You” sounded monumental, spotlighting backup singer Polly Money and saxophonist John Waugh.

It’s worth noting that on this tour, Healy’s voice sounds stronger than ever. Meanwhile, bassist Ross MacDonald, drummer George Daniel and guitarist Adam Hann are steady and often stoic, serving as needed foils to the unpredictable frontman, who slinks around the stage, huffing on cigarettes and taking swigs from a flask.

Midway through the show, the band exited the stage as Healy sat down on the couch, put on an oxygen mask and rubbed his crotch. The singer then fell to his knees in front of one of the television sets, which broadcast shots of Ben Shapiro, Mark Zuckerberg, Kamala Harris, Bored Ape NFTs, Liz Truss, Vladimir Putin and Logan Paul. It got weirder, as Healy began chewing on a raw meat shank and doing push-ups until, finally, he climbed into the TV and disappeared.

Whether the interlude was pure nonsense or an avant-garde presentation of toxic masculinity seems irrelevant to even Healy himself, who went on to apologize for the “black pill performance art” and acknowledge that the show might be a “hard sell” to those who aren’t already big fans of the 1975.

Nonetheless, the band returned to the stage moments later in black suits and launched into an explosive “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know),” kicking off a second act full of the 1975’s greatest hits. There was “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You),” “Sex” and “Give Yourself a Try,” but, notably, no “Chocolate.” During “The Sound,” Healy enthusiastically commanded the Garden to “fucking jump,” and a huge percentage of the arena’s 20,000 audience members happily obliged.

The show was so tightly choreographed that even Healy’s usual between-song banter was limited, bar apologizing for “touching my dick” to fans who came with their parents, and proclaiming, “If I was Kanye, I wouldn’t have said any of that stuff.”

The disgraced rapper was evoked elsewhere in the show, too. His name was dropped in a “Love It If We Made It” lyric that references a Donald Trump tweet. His signature autotuned ranting style was emulated in a particularly charged version of “I Like America & America Likes Me,” which Healy delivered like a sermon, at least 30 feet above the crowd. And the dangerous effect of the rapper’s recent comments was displayed on the TVs, which showed footage of the neo-Nazis who hung antisemitic banners over L.A.’s 405 freeway last month.

But despite the vague political messaging and elaborate staging, the most exhilarating part of the show was the songs. Healy and Co. are no strangers to stunts, theatrics and moments designed for Twitter virality, but if there’s one thing the 1975 won’t let you forget, it’s that they’re one hell of a live band.

Ben Shapiro’s Book Club got me interested in reading again. I picked up George Orwells 1984 last week and will either watch Ben's episode or read a chapter and watch a summary so I have a better understanding of what I’m reading. Definitely worth the time.

Ben Shapiro is one of the brilliant thinkers of our times. His book club is excellent. Of course Leon Uris’s Exodus is one of my all time favorite books I’ve read—I’ve read it at least 3 times now. It was fun to re-read it and listen to Ben’s astute analysis while overlooking the skyline of Jerusalem.
