Years ago when I posted about a trip with my mom, I received a nasty message from another traveler shaming me for being a “grown man traveling with mom.” Whatever for him. It’s not something to be ashamed of.

I remember our first trip together, which was also her first trip abroad. In the middle of our cable car ride in Hong Kong, my mom shed tears. She tried to hide it, but she was obviously crying. When asked, she said she just never expected she would be able to travel overseas.

You see, my mom grew up in a dirt poor family. She only finished 6th Grade because there were seven children in the family and my grandparents couldn’t afford to send all of them to high school. Someone needed to stay at home and help them work. Unfortunately for my mom, it was her. She’s always valued education, but there was nothing she could do. When she started building a family, she promised herself one thing: that she would do everything to make sure all her children get a college degree .

I am the youngest. Me graduating from college meant finally fulfilling a promise she made to herself a long time ago. She had never traveled very far, so I promised myself that when I started earning well, I would take her somewhere she had never been before every year . That Hong Kong trip when she cried onboard a cable car was our first. We had been to other places since.

My mom is a senior citizen. Traveling with a senior parent is completely different. Their physical condition calls for a plan that is different from when I’m traveling alone or with friends. My mom, for example, although still in good shape doesn’t have that much stamina required for walking long hours or climbing several flights of stairs. Their convenience and comfort become of utmost importance.

We asked the members of our Facebook Group what they think are the best Asian destinations for senior citizens, and these 10 emerged as the top picks!

(Please note that this isn’t based on any official study, just opinions and personal experiences of the members of our FB Group. We don’t necessarily agree with the order. Members are mostly from the Philippines and other ASEAN nations.)

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Singapore

Many of Singapore’s tourist spots lie close to each other: Gardens by the Bay is just next to Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion stands just across the Esplanade area. And even if you must take public transportation, Singapore’s taxi, train, and bus systems are all efficient and comfortable, that commuting isn’t going to be stressful most of the time.

My mom loves theme parks because she never had a chance to enjoy them when she was a kid, and Singapore has more than its share of these parks. Universal Studios Singapore alone can take up an entire day of your itinerary.

Security is also not a problem. Although you still have to be careful (anywhere), you don’t need to be extra-paranoid about safety or your belongings in SG unlike in other destinations in Asia.

2. Osaka, Japan

Seniors make up a big fraction of the Japanese population, so naturally its major cities are senior-friendly. The elderly are always given priority. Getting around isn’t difficult. You’ll find elevators at every train station, dedicated seats on every train car, wheelchair ramps at most establishments, and attractions that cater specifically to them. And Osaka is a great primer for the country. It offers many things that the Japanese culture is known for without the insanity of Tokyo. It’s less crowded, less complicated, less crazy.

Osaka’s strategic location enables easy access to Kyoto and Nara too, which means they don’t need to endure long hours to explore tourist favorites in other cities.

Safety is not an issue. Locals are friendly that someone will be lending a helping hand if something happens. And if your senior loved ones have spent most of their lives in the tropics, Osaka will provide a refreshing change in atmosphere that they will surely remember. 3. Hong Kong

There’s a reason I chose Hong Kong as my first choice for my first overseas trip with my mom — convenience. Flights to HK are cheap, comfortable accommodations are plenty, the climate is pleasant, and its major tourist sites are all easily accessible. Seniors also enjoy discounts on a lot of things like octopus card and admission fees for attractions.

Around half of the buses in Hong Kong are equipped with wheelchair lifts. The trains are also comfortable, with dedicated seats for the elderly. Most attractions are also family-friendly, from Disneyland Hong Kong to Ngong Ping 360 to Victoria Peak.

4. Taipei, Taiwan

Taiwan has been gaining popularity over the past few years as an excellent tourist destination, and one of the questions we get the most is: Is it senior-friendly?

Yes, it is. In fact, Taiwan is committed to being more age-friendly and consciously moving to becoming the best destination for the elderly (and retirees), with the government investing almost NT$2 billion in the medical equipment industry alone.

Taipei’s railway system isn’t as crowded as its counterparts in other East Asian countries. Most of its attractions like its shrines, museums, and parks take little effort to be enjoyed. Elephant Mountain may not be appropriate, but they can climb to the viewing deck of Taipei 101 itself to get a wonderful view.

5. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul is one of the most age-friendly cities in the world. According to the World Health Organization, the city government started their 2020 Master Plan for the Aged Society in 2012 and joined the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) in 2013.

Every subway station in Seoul is equipped with elevators and escalators and a map where they are specifically located so you may choose exactly which section of the train to enter. And its extensive and expansive network means there’s a train station nearby almost wherever you are in the city. If not, you can count on the bus, which is also very pleasant and comfortable. Exploring the city’s historic core isn’t an uphill battle either.

Seoul’s winter can be a bit too harsh, which may be a problem to some, but there are a lot of indoor attractions too. Just make sure they’re adequately covered and minimize the time outside.

6. Boracay, Philippines

Boracay is small. The island’s key attractions and other points of interest are just a short walk or a short ride away. And because it’s heavily commercialized, you’ll find almost anything you’ll ever need without leaving the island. Its wide selection of hotels means it’s easy to find something that would fit your needs. It’s also pretty accessible. If you’re flying straight to Caticlan, it only takes a 10-minute boat ride to reach Boracay.

7. Tokyo, Japan

As of 2010, Tokyo is home to over 13 million residents and over 2.6 million of those (20%) belong to the aged population (65 years old and up). This means it is now close to becoming a “super-aged society.” No wonder why Tokyo is one of the most age-friendly destinations in the world!

Just like in Seoul and Osaka, train stations have elevators, escalators, and wheelchair ramps. All trains have seats specially for the elderly. There are also attractions that cater specifically to them. For example, Sugamo, a shopping street, is known as the Harajuku for the elderly.

Macau has a lot of things going for it. Many of its key tourist spots are within walking distance of each other. The Ruins of St. Paul’s stand beside the Monte Fort, which is just a stroll from Senado Square. Hotel attractions are mostly indoors and these hotels are clustered together! The Venetian is across the City of Dreams, Wynn is next to Grand Lisboa. Macau’s map is also dotted and shaded by several picturesque parks where the local elderly population spend a few of their hours to relax.

9. Palawan, Philippines

Palawan’s top three destinations — El Nido, Coron, and Puerto Princesa — are great for the adventurous and the physically fit. But they can also be easily enjoyed by seniors. In El Nido, most beaches (Seven Commando, Helicopter Island, Simizu, etc) can be reached via a boat ride and don’t require trekking. In Coron, Calauit Safari Park and Maquinit Hot Springs can offer comfortable, unforgettable moments. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is also relatively sweat-free.

10. Bohol, Philippines

Bohol’s usual Countryside Tour is an unhurried hop-on-hop-off activity, meaning all you need is just hop off of your rented van and voila, you’re already at the site. Although it can still get a bit tiring, it isn’t that physical. The Baclayon Church, Man-made Forest, and Loboc River Cruise can all be done effortlessly. The Chocolate Hills demands a bit more effort, but it’s still nowhere near grueling. Even the island-hopping tours from Panglao are also very comfortable.

Hello, interesting read.We have travelled everywhere in Asia some countries multiple times Thailand, Bali, South Korea, Sri Lanka, India etc.we are based in Manila and of course have travelled extensively throughout the Philippines. we are both aged 71 years but don’t have any particular ” special needs”. we use whatever transport is available and only occasionally book ahead.We prefer to use my wife’s uncanny ability to find budget accommodation upon arrival.Middle of the night being the exception.We don’t sit still,it works for us.Go Seniors!!

A very good read. It made me remember my first trip alone with my dad who was 61 at that time. Last October we went to HongKong as well and had a ride with the cable car too. He really cherished the scenery during the ride. I just wished I have spent time preparing him for this travel. He wasn’t able to go around the 2nd and last day due to gout. :( So guys make sure to bring medicine. I hope I can relive those moments with him. That was our last trip na pala :(

1. My mom loves HK more only because of the weather. Naiinitan kasi sya sa SG, haha. Budget-wise, HK is a lot cheaper. But SG is easier to explore.

2. For PWDs, the best destinations are in Japan. Japanese cities like Tokyo and Osaka are very considerate sa mga PWDs. Elevators at every station and yung culture dun really respects and gives way to PWD. Ang mahal lang talaga ng Japan kasi. Sa Pinas, ang top of mind ko ay Puerto Princesa. Madali lang kasi i-tour ang Puerto princesa and super organized ng mga tours dun so hindi mahihirapan. :)

Did you prepare docs like authenticated affidavit of support & undertaking? What’s the immigration process like? I’m planning to take my Mom on a vacation in Taipei. Hi Mics, my mom isn’t retired yet and meron syang tindahan sa palengke, so nung first time, I asked her to bring yung business registration niya. Pero di hinanap or tiningnan.

Nung third time, mas mahigpit yung Immigration Officer, talagang tinatanong sya kung ano trabaho niya etc. Pero my mom answered naman confidently. Di na rin tiningnan yung mga dala naming papers.

If your mom is unemployed now or retired, I’d still suggest na dala ka ng affidavit of support to be sure. Better have it but not need it than need it but not have it.

My parents are with me anywhere I go, We traveled together, yes, its a challenge to travel for they are not able to walk as much, as they want. We fly and I drove them (rent a car). The first time my parents fly International, my mother told me, she pinch herself if she was dreaming or not. Now that my father has medical issue, its not easy anymore to travel long distance. But I am checking a cruise that is Dialysis on a Sea Cruise, where medical team are on board to take care of some patients on dialysis who are traveling. I am also on my early senior like my parents, I still want to travel and some parts of Asia. Youngster and seniors, great to travel and start from our country, if international is a problem specially if visa is a concern. Travel light too.:). By the way, your website is very informative. Napa Valley, California

When road tripping with retirees, be aware that a few too many hours packed together in tight quarters might cause everyone to become a little testy. Luckily, after arriving in Napa Valley, a bottle (or three) of Cabernet from the nearest winery you come across will soothe everyone’s nerves.

In fact, the hills and golden fields of Napa Valley are home to nearly 1,000 wineries, which you can explore by tour bus, train or even a private chartered limousine if you’re looking to drink in style. Montreal, Canada

If it’s your parents’ dream to visit Europe, but the distance and/or cost makes it impossible, look no further than Montreal. Once they’re strolling along the cobblestone streets, your mother and father will soon forget (or just not care) that they’re not in France.

Montreal also has excellent public transportation, meaning you can park the rental car or forget the taxi fare. But after exiting the subway, the city is best seen on foot. Historically referred to as an “oasis,” Palm Springs is graced with warm weather and frequented by celebrities. If you grow tired of the pool or lavish hotel brunches, hot springs and spas are in abundance. Moreover, most businesses are catered to seniors, so any one of the excellent restaurants downtown will likely be quiet and free of long waits, but without feeling like an old folks’ home.

Edinburgh, Scotland

For those with parents who prioritize history when choosing where to travel, the UK’s medieval city of Edinburgh has all the offerings of other European capitals, but without the elbow-to-elbow tourist traffic and astronomical high-season hotel rates.

The city’s most popular destination is Edinburgh Castle — its grandiose stone walls are visible from nearly every neighborhood. Moreover, museums, ancient ruins and architectural masterpieces are in abundance here.

If your parents grow tired of climbing castle steps, Edinburgh is also home to a few different whiskey distilleries, as well as popular Victoria Street, perfect for a shopping spree.

Plus, if you’re in need of some alone time, you can send your parents off for tea and head toward the city’s massive public park — The Meadows — for a jog, walk or nap.

Granada, Spain

Bar Harbor, Maine

If your parents are hoping to get in touch with nature, think about Bar Harbor. Full of rocky shores and pine-covered mountains, Bar Harbor is adjacent to Acadia National Park, which is comprised of more than 47,000 acres that run along the Atlantic Coast. While most swaths of wilderness this size require at least a moderate level of physical fitness, Acadia can be accessed with a single day pass via bus, trolley or boat, all of which leave from town.

It’s also possible to do a little wildlife watching without walking too far — the park is home to bears, moose, seals, whales and seabirds. Plus, upon return to Bar Harbor, there’s plenty of whimsical shops to explore and restaurants to try. Ask for recommendations if you like, but any local will tell you to try to the rich and buttery lobster.

Sicily, Italy

For any seasoned traveler, it’s probably no surprise that Italy graces this list twice. From the food, wine and diverse landscapes to the architecture, museums and shopping, Italy is a go-to destination for travelers young and old.

The island of Sicily, located at the southern tip of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea, is a particularly smart choice for those seeking both sun and substance. Depending on mom and dad’s mood, you could conceivably laze on the beach all day picking at plates of grilled swordfish, freshly made ricotta and tomatoes the color of Chianti wine. Or, if everyone is feeling adventurous, lace up your walking shoes and explore the abundant historical sites, which include ornate Catholic cathedrals, Greek temples, baroque palaces and Arab domes.

Sicily requires a bit more effort to get to than, say, Rome or Florence, but if your parents are up to it, this island won’t disappoint.

Jerusalem, Israel

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. 2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. August is the vacation month for many Europeans, so crowds on the streets of Paris and London start thinning. Since you have the luxury of leisure, instead of a hectic tour of 10 cities in 10 days, pick one spectacular location and savor the sights. Linger in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy a less demanding itinerary.

Closer to home, golfers and anglers will find the mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England abound with the top-rated greens, fast-moving streams, and quaint little towns.

September: Water Temperatures Are Ideal, Crowds Have Checked Out

September may be the perfect month to head to the beach, as temperatures, crowds, and lodging prices all tend to start dropping around this time of year. Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

October brings harvest season, Octoberfest merriment, and dozens of other reasons to get out of the recliner. Check your local newspaper for all the Fall events in your area or enjoy a vacation filled with crisp autumn sights, sounds, and smells.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Senior Safety Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to tell your innkeeper or hotel concierge your itinerary. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Keep a cell phone on you at all times, along with your hotel and family contact information.

Parents, like the rest of us, often act differently while on vacation. Traveling with one or both parents during their Golden Years can be a rewarding way to see a different side of them and to re-connect. It is also a good way to spend time together while also indulging your travel bug. Maybe you have traveled with your parents many times, but never traveled abroad with them. Maybe you have not traveled with them since childhood. Maybe this is the first trip you have ever taken together. Whether this is your first time traveling with an elderly parent, or your tenth, paying attention to the special needs of elderly travelers can help the trip go more smoothly. Pre-departure preparation can pay off. Here are some tips that sprang from recent travels in the Yucatan with my 79-year-old diabetic mother.

Choose Your Destination and Type of Trip Carefully

With an elderly parent, you may want to leave the backpack at home (unless you have one of those rare parents who run marathons into her nineties). Once you have come to terms with this fact, you can move to the next step: deciding what kind of travel you would like to do. It is no sin to choose a tour — it is sometimes the easiest way to navigate a country in which you do not speak the language, especially with a travel companion whose needs may be different from your own. Unfortunately, package tours do not provide much local flavor, and can also be strenuous (early morning wake up calls, lots of sites packed into one day, etc.) One way to stay independent is to mix things up by booking your hotels separately from other travel logistics. This takes planning. Having a wish list of sites and cities that you would like to visit helps. Once there, you can choose from local tours or local guides, who can be just as knowledgeable as those provided by tour companies. Such planning still leaves you with the option of going it alone when you feel like it.

The age, mobility, and health status of your elderly traveling partner might also impact which country you visit, and during what time of year. Climate extremes can exact heavier tolls on us as we age, so visiting a jungle during the hottest, rainiest season may not be the best idea. Likewise, journeying to Russia during the dead of winter may not be the wisest choice. Another consideration is that as people age, so do their immune systems, so this may be an important consideration while choosing which country to visit. You may still choose those countries with a plethora of endemic infectious diseases (e.g. India), but it is helpful to do so in the full knowledge of the possible effects on your elderly travel partner.  

Reserve Accommodations in Advance

If you are the type of person who prefers to wait until arrival to find your hotel, you might want to adjust your routine. Booking a hotel in advance can help decrease the overall stress of the trip. Keep in mind that seniors, even when in the best of shape, may have limited mobility compared to younger travelers. Booking a hotel in advance avoids rushing around in an unknown city with an elderly travel partner whose exercise tolerance may be different from your own. Going straight from the airport to your lodging allows you both to rest after the flight, which can be a huge relief.

Seniors sometimes take longer to recover from air travel and to adjust to changes in time zones, so it is often helpful to schedule relaxing one or two nights in a hotel at your arrival destination to recover from the flight. At the end of the trip, it is also a good idea to schedule a few nights of rest and relaxation in a central location before heading home. This is just as much for you as for your elderly companion. If you functioned as the tour director and coordinator, you might need this R&R before heading back to busy schedules at home.

Dropping extra cash to stay at a safe, clean hotel close to the main attractions can also make a big difference in the enjoyment of your trip. Likewise, booking separate rooms can help insure a restful night for you both, which pays off big the next day (well rested travelers are less cranky travelers). 

Budget Considerations 

Budgeting extra money for conveniences in which you might not normally indulge is also important. For example, public transportation can be difficult for many seniors to access. Subway stairs can be tough on aged knees and hips. Waiting for buses in the hot sun (or cold wind) can exact a heavier toll on seniors than on younger travelers. Paying extra money for a cab ride can make you both happier. If you plan on visiting more than one city, renting a car can be easier on your elderly travel companion than taking local transport. Keep in mind, though, that you may end up being the driver, navigator, and porter. So be prepared for this added stress, as well as that of driving in a foreign country. 

If you are the type of person who saves money by eating one meal a day, keep in mind that this routine might not be so easy for an elderly parent. Budgeting money for regular meals at reputable restaurants (which could mean foregoing street food) will keep you both healthy and happy.  

Spending money on tourist guides, who know the terrain better than you, can minimize the risk of getting lost, as well as the added exertion and stress this can cause. Local guides can also be a fountain of regional knowledge, as well as a social outlet. Let’s face it, two people traveling together eventually run out of things to say. A local guide can provide welcome comic relief. 

Health Issues When Traveling with a Senior

Before you go, make sure that you both visit the doctor. Depending on where you plan to travel, you may need vaccinations or other prophylactic measures, such as an immunoglobulin shot. If your parent has any health conditions, your doctor can provide advice on how to stay healthy during the trip. Your doctor will also be able to prescribe medications: antimalarials or other antibiotics that may be needed should either of you become sick. 

Remember to pack your own over-the-counter first aid and health items: hand wipes or hand sanitizers, Tylenol or aspirin, Pepto-Bismol, stool softeners for constipation, sleep aids, band aids and alcohol wipes (especially if you are traveling in a tropical climate). If you or your elderly travel companion takes prescription medication, remember to pack it in your carry on and not in your checked bag. With the medications in hand there is no risk of missed doses if your bags get lost or the flight is delayed. If your parent is diabetic, be prepared to plan your trip around meal times in order to avoid low blood sugar levels. When site seeing, make sure you bring snacks and water with you in case of a dip in blood sugar.

Adjust Your Expectations and Slow Your Pace for an Elder Parent

If you are the type of person who whizzes around a city and sees 10 sites in a single day, you may have to ratchet down your expectations as well as your energy level. Elderly travelers usually do not move as fast as younger ones. Planning to visit one or (at most) two sites per day is more realistic. Adjusting your expectations can help avoid frustration. 

There are some advantages to going at a slower pace. How many times have you returned from those whirlwind vacations feeling exhausted and in need of another vacation? Going more slowly can help you relax and make the trip less stressful. Spending more time in one place also often allows you to better appreciate the destination, the aesthetics, and the atmosphere. So you did not get to the Tuileries before closing. But you stood before the Mona Lisa for a half an hour, rather than rushing past like you normally might. 

Likewise, lingering over meals in many countries is not just for the elderly — it is part of the culture. So do what the locals do: if your elderly companion wants to spend half the day eating, then it is an opportunity to get to know the gastronomy of the country, or to chat with the waiters and other diners. If your elderly companion wants a siesta in the middle of the day, it might be a good idea for you, too. Likewise, taking a break on a park bench is a great way to get to know local life. In Merída, my mother and I sat on a park bench and watched a wedding party gather. We witnessed the excited chatter of the party as they waited for the bride’s arrival, who showed up last and bravely walked into the church and toward her future. We would have missed the procession were it not for the fact that my mother needed to take a break on a bench near the church. 

So this might not be the trip in which you see everything on the tourist map. By slowing your pace to that of your elderly companion’s you might see even more than you would if you rushed around. 

Plan Time for Your Own Rest and Relaxation

Be aware that you might end up being the caretaker, the tour guide, the navigator, and the translator (if you speak the local language and your companion does not). This is especially true if you have traveled more widely than your elderly parent. All this can boil down to a world of worry and stress. After all, you do not want anything to happen to your beloved companion, and you certainly do not want to feel to blame for it. If you do not want to be a nervous wreck by the end of the trip, be sure to schedule time for yourself. Whether it is a few hours wandering in the souk , or half a day on the beach, everyone needs time to unwind, including you. Scheduling such time allows you and your companion to have space away from each other. We all need our space, even in the best of parent-child relationships. Realizing that and requesting it before frustration builds can be the salvation of a trip, and make it more enjoyable for both of you.

A Final Word on a Traveling with a Parent

While planning your trip you may discover other, more individualized considerations. These depend on your chosen destination, length of trip, time of year, personal parent-child relationship, and the medical or physical limitations of your elderly parent. Taking time before the trip to think about specific considerations and to talk about them with your traveling companion can help you prepare for the unexpected. A little preparation can help make the trip a cherished memory for you both.

What an adventure. Absolutely amazing. Everything was meticulously organised from start to finish by our agent Long Pham. Our private airport transfers all worked perfectly. Our hotels were great. Each was thoughtfully and strategically chosen, to be in the best locations for each of our destinations. The activities were well organised and all of them were exciting, fascinating and interesting. If adventure is your thing, rather than just sitting on the beach, then this holiday is for you. Long Pham was constantly on hand via WhatsApp checking everything was going to plan and available to answer all our questions and make suggestions. My advice is get a eSIM which works in all the locations we visited in South East Asia. We used Holafly. This means you’ll have internet access everywhere which is makes a big difference. One thing to note is my wife is a celiac and cannot eat wheat. Knowledge of such a condition isn’t great in South East Asia so if you have a similar condition, take translated explanations in the native tongues to show waiters and waitresses. It was a great adventure and we loved every minute of it.

This is not a group adventure. Check to see how many people are on your trip; especially if you are travelling solo or enjoy meeting fellow travelers. Caucasus Explorer - Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan

Overall enjoyed the tour immensely. The hotels were great and the trip was a great overall value! Some suggestions would be one less day in Armenia and one extra day in Azerbaijan. The Armenia activities were mostly churches. It would have been nice to have more variety in activities there. Natalie the guide in Tbilisi was fantastic as was Zack the guide on the second day in Azerbaijan. Both were upbeat, dynamic and helpful above and beyond what was necessary. The main issue on our tour was lack of leadership from the young lady Margarita who accompanied us from place to place. She made no effort to unite the group and was easily upset when asked any questions or for clarification. She did no introductions and it was up to all the individual members to introduce themselves throughout the first few days. She complained alot, was defensive throughout the trip and did not seem happy to be there. She did not provide the leadership this group deserved.

Top Senior-Friendly Destinations in Southeast Asia

“Baby boomers” – today’s traveling seniors – practically discovered Southeast Asia travel for the West. Boomers discovered Bali’s surfing. Boomers opened up Indochina. And boomers invented the backpacker hostels that now crop up at every top Southeast Asia city.

Now that boomers are retired with spending money to spare, they’re coming back to Southeast Asia in droves. But they’re not traveling the way that they did when they were younger – these days, they’re looking for different things. And now as before, the region still delivers what they want.

What do these traveling seniors look for in a travel destination – and how does Southeast Asia deliver?

Authenticity. “[Traveling seniors] tend to be well-traveled, and so they seek travel opportunities that go beyond the standard tour stops,” explains Nancy Parode, About.com’s resident Expert for Senior Travel .”They’re looking for unique places and for ways to really connect with the local culture, whether that be by taking off-the-main-path journeys, volunteering or staying for longer than a week in a single destination.”

Southeast Asia is full of destinations that allow travelers to tap directly into the local culture, but not all cultures are created equal. Travelers looking for that cultural connection should visit Cambodia , where they’ll find no shortage of village homestays, ancient temples, and art performances around the countryside; or Indonesia , a sprawling country where it seems every island (almost 10,000 in all) has its own, unique culture to enjoy.

Value. Getting the most bang for their buck is essential for traveling seniors – “not necessarily because they have super-small travel budgets, but because they want to keep traveling as long as they possibly can,” Nancy explains. “In the case of the seniors who grew up during the Great Depression, frugality has always been important to them.”

While low cost travel has always been the hallmark of Southeast Asia (no wonder it’s a backpacker’s haven!), senior travelers have found that the region delivers its greatest value via medical tourism and as a retirement destination.

The Philippines has become one of Southeast Asia’s top retirement destinations – over 27,000 foreign retirees from 107 countries (as of 2013) have taken advantage of the country’s Special Resident Retirees Visa to enjoy their golden years at a comfortable cost. Malaysia , on the other hand, has leveraged its relatively low medical costs become a regional leader in medical tourism , with the number of medical tourists breaching the 1 million mark in 2013.

Safety and sanitation. “Seniors heading to Southeast Asia are concerned about keeping themselves safe and protecting their travel documents and money,” Nancy says. Food safety is also paramount: “Some senior travelers are very adventurous when it comes to food, but others worry about what they’ll eat once they are at their destination – in Southeast Asia or elsewhere – and whether the drinking water is safe.”

Singapore has solved the food safety problem in one fell swoop, by efficiently regulating their street food vendors. The country’s famous “hawker centers” number about 113 government owned places and at least twice as many privately owned ones; all of them undergo the strictest scrutiny from inspectors, but that has not seemed to prevent the hawkers from producing some of the most delicious food in the region.

More and more places in Southeast Asia hit the sweet spot in more than one of the values enumerated above.

Thailand , for example, delivers plenty where value, authenticity and safety are concerned. Once the sole preserve of the young backpacker, Thailand has become something of a must-see for seniors , given the country’s wide range of accommodations, easy-to-reach tourist destinations ranging from jungle to beach to temple, and spectacular street food scene.

Vietnam has historically appealed to war veteran senior travelers, but this country’s appeal has expanded thanks to the rapid development of its beaches, historical sites and natural wonders (the world’s largest cave is in Vietnam – and is unsurprisingly booked solid for the next two years).

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. Well look no further, we have compiled all the best family-friendly countries to visit that are safe, fun, easy, and kid-friendly. Places that are great for children of any age including toddlers or babies too!

Which country is best for a family vacation?

All these are the best travel places to take kids – we should know since we’ve taken our kids to ALL of these countries for our family vacations! Most of these destinations were on our 1 year trip around the world , but these could easily be vacations or extended travel places to take the kids. There are all great places to visit with kids!

1. Cambodia

One of the best international travel destinations for families is Cambodia. Siem Reap is a fantastic place to explore with kids and the people of Cambodia love kids and help families feel comfortable and safe. The easiest way to travel to Cambodia is through the airport with your family. By far one of the best countries to visit with family!

2. South Africa

South Africa is one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit with family. The country has so much to offer from kid-friendly African safaris or city escapes in Cape Town . We spent over 3 weeks in this country and it is one of our favourite countries in the world.

Without a doubt, Vietnam is one of the most family-friendly countries to visit. Vietnam was the first Southeast Asian country that we took the kids to and was genuinely impressed with how much the people and the travel industry cater to kids.

We spent 4 weeks travelling all over Vietnam with some of the best highlights in Hoi An, Halong Bay, Hanoi and Phu Quoc. All of the places in Vietnam are kid-friendly. We felt safe and found it very easy to travel around this country. Vietnam is one of the best countries to travel with kids and you’ll be sure to enjoy your family vacation here.

Vietnam would be a great place to take toddlers and babies too!

Croatia is a dream destination for families. All kinds of fun activities for the kids to do, with plenty of beach days, swimming, hiking, and exploring waterfalls. Kids love taking the ferries out to the other islands and snorkelling in the clear blue water. Croatia is one of the best places to travel with kids!

I would suggest it is one of the best European countries to visit with kids, they love the food, sunshine and really easy for the kids to have a good time. As well, most people speak English which can make it easy for North Americans to visit and feel comfortable. For all these great reasons, Croatia is one of the best countries to travel to with family.

When we booked Malta to take our kids to we had no idea what to expect nor did we know anyone that had taken their kids there. But, we absolutely loved Malta with our kids and highly recommend it for families.

Located south of Italy it offers great weather, clear blue water and a unique amount of history with the location between Europe and Africa. So you can have beach days with your family and also get a big dose of history and culture. Be sure to go visit the island of Gozo too. It is one of the best family holiday destinations in the world and a place that is undiscovered by many! We love Malta and truly think it is one of best countries to travel to with kids.

6. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a great country to take kids to. We loved taking our kids to Prague and think it is one of the best cities to visit with kids. There are tons of playgrounds and parks to take the kids to in the heart of the city. They have kid-centric activities and fun things for the kids to do in the city.

The Czech Republic can also be a great country that you can pair with other close countries to visit with the family. We did a 10-day trip through the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria to see all these amazing family-friendly countries. The Czech Republic is one the best countries for kids and offers so much for all kids to enjoy.

7. United Kingdom

If you are new to travelling in Europe, the United Kingdom is an easy country to try first for your first international family vacation. The easiest part is that everything is in English, including menus, signs, taxi drivers and any other communication you need.

It’s also a great place to introduce kids to that are new to travelling. London has some very cool things to do including the Making of Harry Potter Studio which is always a hit with kids.

8. United Arab of Emirates

The United Arab of Emirates may not have been on your radar and it wasn’t necessarily for us either. But, when planning our travel we found out that Dubai is a central hub for many flights so why not make a stopover in this country to check it out.

Dubai has tons of things to do with kids, more than I ever expected and they love families travelling in the country. We also felt extremely safe and impressed by how kid-friendly everything was. Plus, one of the best things to do in the UAE is to go on a desert safari which we highly recommend. Abu Dhabi is a very fun city for kids too and should be on your list.

If your family is looking for a beach destination that is carefree and easy then Jamaica is a great place to visit with your kids. There are so many great all-inclusive that offer great family options for lazy days by the pool and building sandcastles on the beach. Many of the resorts in Jamaica are easy holidays with kids that offer kids clubs and babysitting services for babies and toddlers.

The ocean is amazing in Jamacia and the sand is remarkable. A perfect Caribbean family getaway.

10. Australia

Australia is one of the best travel places for kids. What kid doesn’t want to see kangaroos, koala bears and go snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef? Australia is a large country so chances are unless you are going to move there for a while you will not even see a good portion of it. So you’ll have to choose which area you are going to go see with your family.

We highly recommend the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island , Sydney and the Great Ocean Road for a 1-month vacation in Australia . So much to see and do in Australia that is fantastic for families to visit and one of the most kid friendly countries in the world.

11. Hungary

Hungary is a great country to take the kids to. Budapest is a fun and easy city to take the kids to with fun places to see such as Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda hill castle funicular and a river cruise on the Danube River. Try taking train rides through the country or renting a car to get to see the countryside and stop in new places along the way.

12. Thailand

Thailand is a dream destination for families to go to. It is extremely easy and safe travel with your kids in Thailand. They have more tourism and international visitors than many other southeast Asian countries so they are really good at making travellers feel comfortable.

So many amazing temples to visit in Bangkok and beach life on Phuket Island are some of our recommendations.

13. New Zealand

The best way to visit New Zealand with your family is with a campervan or on a road trip to be able to visit both the North and South Islands. New Zealand offers so many diverse places to see on the islands and great for any families that love the outdoors.

After travelling in New Zealand for 1 month there are still places that we did not discover so our advice is to try to see it all but enjoy the places you do get to see with the family. Some of the kid’s highlights of New Zealand are Hobbiton, Lake Wanaka and the Waitomo caves.

Canada has so much to offer and depending on where you go in the country you’ll have all different experiences. From mountains in British Columbia to the prairies , or french life in Quebec, or the Maritimes. There is a diverse amount of places to visit that are unique in their own way.

Canada can also be a great family trip if you are wanting to see the snow and all the winter wonderlands including Banff , Big White or Whistler.

15. Austria

A country that has so much history and culture for the kids to truly appreciate what they learn in all the textbooks in their classrooms. Have some new experience with the family by taking them to the Opera or a grand palace in Vienna .

16. Singapore

Singapore can be a great entry into southeast Asia for families. It is a mix of western and eastern worlds with a mix of so many other cultures it lets you get a dose of culture in this small country. Kids will love places like Universal Studios and waterparks, and still enjoy the amazing world of street food that is infused in this country. Singapore is definitely one of the countries for a family vacation that you should check off your list!

17. Malaysia

Malaysia is a great place to visit with the kids. Langkawi island is a great place that offers a beach escape for families which is less touristic and off the beaten path for family travellers but all the conveniences for resort life.

On our 1-year world trip, Langkawi was where we decided to go for our “vacation” from travelling. It is one of the easiest countries to visit with children since the culture embraces kids, babies, toddlers and any small kids.

France is a great country to take your kids to. I visited France many times when I was a kid and had no concerns or worries about taking our kids there. But, I would highly recommend either driving yourself through the countryside or checking out other places than the major hub of Paris. We loved our time in Biarritz where we enjoyed the French life and visited where the French go on vacation. France is the best country to travel with kids if you are looking for a bit of cultural change but still some westernized influences, it’s very easy to travel to with kids.

19. Indonesia

Indonesia is a great place for families to vacation. This country can be a cost-effective Southeast Asian country to visit and spend a significant amount of time in. Kids love to discover places in Bali like the rice terraces and Ubud Monkey Forrest. Indonesia is one of the most kid-friendly countries to visit and love having kids visit their country.

Mexico is a great country to take kids for an easy trip when children are small. There are beach vacation resorts for families that are fun for everyone with pools, beaches, great food and kids clubs. So if you are looking for a beach vacation that is easy many places in Mexico can offer some great places.

We recommend places like Mayan Riviera, Nuevo Vallarta or Puerto Vallarta. It is where to travel with kids for a great first trip with kids.

Spain is a fantastic place to travel to with kids. We will definitely be spending more time in Spain over the next few years to discover more. Great food, great culture and warm weather are the perfect matches for families who love to travel. This is the reason why Spain is one of the best countries for a family vacation and to enjoy some great family time.

22. Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a great country that is still off the beaten path for many families who travel. But, with that come a more cost-effective way to travel with cheaper rates on hotels, food and activities. Sofia Bulgaria is also a flight hub to easily have a few day layovers for a quick family trip. Bulgaria is a great option and one of the best countries to travel with family for a more budget-friendly option.

What kid doesn’t like pasta and pizza? The food in Italy will make it a hit for sure with the kids. But, sprinkled in between great food are some cool places to check out for kids. Rome is a great place to take the kids for a world of history for them to learn from. Venice, Alfami coast and Cinque Terra are some great places too for kids to love. It’s a top destination for families for a reason and one of the best countries to visit with kids.

Cuba is a great Caribbean destination that is kid-friendly which some of the softest and whitest sand we’ve seen in the world. Beach life suits baby and toddler travel with easy nap times and a slow pace of life while on vacation here. Cuba is amazingly one of the best countries to visit with family in tow.

Havana, Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria are great spot to check out and a super family friendly countries to visit.

25. South Polynesian (Vanuatu & New Caledonia)

The South Polynesian islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia are some of the most beautiful places on earth. An easy way to visit these destinations with kids is with a cruise. We recommend a South Polynesian cruise to have the balance for kids to go check out many different islands but have the fun of a cruise ship.

If you are looking for the best country for family vacation, the South Polynesian doesn’t get much more dreamier and funner for kids.

26. Dominican Republic

Bonus! A country that we needed to share is the Dominican Republic. This country is one of the best places to travel with toddlers. White sands, clear blue water and family-friendly resorts make this a great family destination for families with little ones. It is a great kid-friendly country to visit with your family.

Ron Goldman's father and Alan Dershowitz react to O.J. Simpson's death

The death of O.J. Simpson drew immediate reaction around the country Thursday, renewing public interest in his era-defining 1995 murder trial — and reviving painful memories for the families who were close to the events.

Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, capping off what legal analysts described at the time as the "trial of the century."

Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, told NBC News that the news of Simpson's death only further underscored his grief for his son, who was found stabbed to death outside Brown Simpson's home in Los Angeles on June 12, 1994.

"The only thing I have to say is, it’s just further reminder of Ron being gone all these years," Fred Goldman said in a phone interview. "It’s no great loss to the world. It’s a further reminder of Ron’s being gone."

In a subsequent statement sent to reporters, Fred Goldman and his daughter, Kim, said they were experiencing a "mixed bag of complicated emotions."

"We will continue to advocate for the rights of all victims and survivors, ensuring our voices are heard both within and beyond the courtroom," the Goldmans said in part. "Thank you for keeping our family, and most importantly Ron, in your hearts for the last 30 years."

Alan Dershowitz, the prominent lawyer who served as an adviser on Simpson's legal "Dream Team" alongside Johnnie Cochran and F. Lee Bailey, told NBC News that he was saddened to learn that his onetime client had died.

"I knew he was very sick, so I'm upset that he died," Dershowitz said. "I got to know him fairly well during the trial. It was one of the most divisive trials in American history along racial lines. He'll always be remembered for the Bronco chase, for the glove and for the moment of acquittal."

Simpson, 76, died of cancer, according to a statement from his family that was posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," the family said. "He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Simpson's team of lawyers also included his friend Robert Kardashian, the late husband of reality television mogul Kris Jenner. The former Olympian and media personality Caitlyn Jenner, who was later married to Kris Jenner until their divorce in 2015, tweeted just two words in response to the news of Simpson's death: "Good Riddance."

Marcia Clark, a former Los Angeles deputy district attorney who was the lead prosecutor in the Simpson murder case, released a short statement: "I send my condolences to Mr. Simpson's family."

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Keith Zlomsowitch — Brown Simpson's ex-boyfriend — said Simpson's death was a "relief." Zlomsowitch served as a pallbearer at her funeral.

"I think finally some sort of justice has been served, that he’s been taken from the earth," Zlomsowitch said. "So it doesn’t bring Nicole back. But it means he can no longer be who he is in this world."

Bob Costas, the sports broadcaster who worked with Simpson for years at NBC Sports covering the NFL, said he leaves behind “a complicated legacy, to put it mildly.”

“I can’t think of anyone historical or someone that we may have known where the first chapter and the second chapter of their lives are such a stark contrast … revered and then reviled,” Costas said on NBC’s “TODAY” show Friday. 

In the decades before he earned national infamy as a murder trial defendant, Simpson was best known as a decorated football star and sometime actor, appearing in "The Naked Gun" movie franchise.

The Buffalo Bills, the team Simpson spent most of his NFL career with, did not immediately post a comment on his death, but a fan account published a photo of him on Instagram.
