You have one long weekend and a suitcase full of wanderlust. Whether you want to escape the commotion for the mountains or leave your quiet town for the action of a buzzing metropolis, here are 18 U.S. cities—ranging from Colorado ghost towns to coastal cultural hubs—where three or four days is just enough. 5 Unexpected, but Totally Worthwhile, American Wine Trips

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Visit in the fall for a game at the Big House or in the summer to explore the renowned city art fair . Either way, Ann Arbor is so much more than your average college town. Get your nature fix by exploring the arboretum , nosh on some Cuban-inspired street food at Frita Batidos and embark on a scavenger hunt for the tiny fairy doors built into buildings and trees around the city.

Where to stay: Stay right on campus at the Inn at the League , a university building with lots of charm.

Asbury Park, New Jersey

This funky resort town is experiencing a major resurgence at the moment. In the summer, start your morning with sunrise yoga on the Asbury Hotel’s Baronet roof space, and then head to the famous Asbury Park Beach before you do dinner and movie back on the Baronet. Want a night out? The city has a surprisingly robust LGBTQ scene (check out Paradise for a drag show) and rock music culture (the Stone Pony, aka the birthplace of “The Boss,” is a must).

Where to stay: Stay in a former Salvation Army building turned hip hotel, The Asbury Hotel .

Asheville, North Carolina

This southern city dropped in the Blue Mountains is a breathtaking little enclave for artists and hippies. Peruse the River Arts District to find something unique for over the mantel, and replenish at funky eateries like The Admiral (which transforms into a dance party post-dinner). Hike the three-mile Pisgah Trail for the best views of the city and wind down with a beer (there are more breweries in Asheville per capita than in any other U.S. city).

Where to stay: Instead of merely visiting the famous Biltmore House , why not stay there?

Bozeman, Montana

This cowboy town is seeing lots of development in a very short amount of time; but locals are committed to maintaining its original character. The outcome? Plenty of buildings dating back to the 1890s, galleries, shops, restaurants and coffee shops ( lots of coffee shops) to peruse. Meander around Main Street’s independent book shops, and then splurge on a pair of custom kicks from Carter’s Boots . And if you want to get your Ansel Adams on, take a photography workshop at F11Photo (just don’t forget to pack your camera when you hike Drinking Horse Mountain ).

Where to stay: Designed to help you get the most out of southern Montana, The LARK is all about bringing old and new Bozeman together.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Beer lovers may flock to Asheville or Seattle, but Cincinnati is a treasure trove of brews. In fact, it’s home to more than 40 breweries with its very own beer trail: The Brewery Heritage Trail. Once you get your buzz going, make sure to save ample time for the Over-the-Rhine district, one of the largest, most in-tact urban historic districts in the U.S. Oh, and it’s got some really great food, too.

Where to stay: Right across the Ohio River is the waterfront  Hotel Covington . Sure, it’s technically in Covington, Kentucky, but its rates will make the short trek so worth it.

Charleston, South Carolina

With its waterfront promenades, iconic architecture and cobblestone streets, this seaport city is brimming with things to do over a long weekend—and much of it involves food. Make sure to make a fancy dinner reservation at FIG, Husk or the Charleston Grill. And no trip to Charleston would be complete without a visit to nearby Boone Hall Plantation—where countless movies have been filmed. And if you have extra time on your hands, island hop to Kiawah Island, where you’ll undoubtedly stumble upon your own private beach.

Where to stay:  Charleston is all about elegance. So do it up in style at the Belmond Charleston Place .

Columbia, South Carolina

If Charleston is Marcia Brady, Columbia is Jan. But that’s fine by us. As Soda City experiences its urban revival, we’re fine keeping this best-kept secret to ourselves. With old gems like the Robert Mills House & Gardens and Lula Drake , a cozy, historic wine bar, this super-walkable, charming city feels like a small-town getaway within a big city.

Where to stay: The brand-new Aloft Columbia Downtown is walking distance to everything.

Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

One word: antiquing. From estate sales to flea markets and barn-inspired stores that would make Chip and Joanna Gaines’ hearts flutter, a weekend in Litchfield means discovering hidden gems. Need a break from the dust? Take to the skies and get a bird’s-eye view of it all from a hot-air balloon .

Where to stay: The 18 luxury cottages at Winvian Farm each have their own unique spin—like a whimsical-chic tree house, a refurbished helicopter and a nautical lighthouse.

Louisville, Kentucky

Even if you don’t make it there for the famed Kentucky Derby, there’s so much do in Bourbon County, including, of course, the Urban Bourbon Trail , where you can spend a buzzy afternoon hopping between distilleries. Of course, there’s also baseball, bluegrass and mint juleps (c’mon, you have to have one here).

Where to stay: Art lovers: You must try the 21c Museum Hotel in downtown Louisville.

Nashville, Tennessee

From honky-tonk bars up and down Broadway to the Grand Ole Opry , there’s really no escaping live music when you’re in Nashville. If you want real-deal country, head to Robert’s Western World. Want to spot the next big thing? Make sure you get to the 90-person venue at Bluebird Café early. Bring home an epic keepsake from Hatch Show Print , the letterpress design shop known for its iconic posters.

Where to stay: For some straight-up Southern hospitality, The Hermitage is a must (they’ll even walk your dog for you).

Your Guide to Nashville, Tennessee

Palm Springs, California

Desert sunsets, mountain views and perfect weather—it’s no wonder this SoCal city has been an old Hollywood escape for years. Sip on a martini at Johannes and be transported back to the 1950s, take an architecture tour of the mid-century modern homes and, most importantly, enjoy the weather poolside.

Where to stay: The hotel scene in Palm Springs is legendary, and the Saguaro Hotel is a fresh take on a classic, replete with lots of bright color, a pool and mountain views.

Petaluma, California

The sleepy town across the Golden Gate is a wonderful little reprieve from the hustle and bustle of SF. Book a walkabout in the olive tree fields at McEvoy Ranch (save time for an olive oil tasting!); eat duck confit cassoulet at The Drawing Board and follow it up with a cocktail at Barber Cellars , Petaluma’s first tasting room for small-production, single-vineyard wines. Mmm .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philly may be stoked in history, but it’s currently booming, and no, we’re not just talking cheesesteaks or the Liberty Bell (although, hey, nothing wrong with either). The thriving food scene sates even the snootiest East Coast foodies. (OK, we’re looking at you, New Yorkers.) From classics like the tomato pie at Marchiano’s Bakery to newbies like Danlu, a smart-looking Taiwanese street food restaurant, there’s no shortage of interesting things to taste or do. Book your rezzies accordingly.

Where to stay:  Aloft Philadelphia Downtown blends the city’s rich history with contemporary vibes.

Portland, Oregon

The dream of the ’90s is alive in Portland! Well, at least according Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. But it’s time you checked out this hipster paradise for yourself. Feast on craft coffee, cider, doughnuts and all the farm-to-table cuisine you can stand in line for (we kid, we kid). Beyond the city’s quirky culture, you’ll also have to make time to explore the beautiful Pacific Northwest landscape.

Where to stay: Get the best of both worlds at the River’s Edge Hotel , right at the junction of downtown Portland and the tranquil Willamette Valley.

San Antonio, Texas

While all the bachelorette parties are heading to Austin, you should make way to this riverside city (even if all you recall about this Texas town from history class is “Remember the Alamo!”). Start with the River Walk . It may be touristy, but we’re suckers for the water taxis that let you hop between food, drink and shopping. There’s also the Pearl District , the 1881 brewery turned sprawling development that’s become a trendy hot spot with live music, farmers markets and so much more. And of course, nothing beats a picturesque picnic in Hill Country.

Where to stay: For rooftop pool and complimentary Electra cruiser bikes, you should most definitely stay at Hotel Emma .

Santa Fe, New Mexico

It’s the city where art meets nature. Hike amid the aspen trees (which turn a gorgeous orange come fall) and meander through the city’s countless galleries, sculpture gardens and artisan turquoise shops. If you’re a fan of George R.R. Martin, or the avant-garde, you must take time for Meow Wolf , the multilevel interactive art museum filled with VR, audio engineering and a strong dose of mystery.

Where to stay: For a historic and iconic getaway, try the Inn and Spa at Loretto .

Sonoma, California

Sure, there’s lots to do in this glorious West Coast region. But we all know why you’re here: wine. Sip your way through the city at tasting rooms like La Crema or the 140-year-old cellars at Simi . Make sure to make time for—drumroll, please—more wine at Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards , where you can drink wine and play croquet on the courts.

St. Petersburg-clearwater, Florida

From New York City to Los Angeles and from Miami to Seattle, the United States is blessed to have a number of diverse cities waiting to be explored. We all know that Americans have very limited vacation time so we want to share a collaborative guide on the best cities to visit in the USA for an amazing weekend. Weekend travel is something we thrive on and we are constantly encouraging people we know to utilize their weekends more productively. Do you realize just how much you can see in 48 hours?

We are delighted to collaborate with some of the best experts in the travel industry as we look at 20 awesome cities across the United States. I am sure you already have a favorite US city in mind and of course, a guide to the best cities in the States wouldn’t be the same without the likes of NYC and Boston. However, what about some of the lesser-known cities that you may not have considered visiting?

Hopefully, after reading this guide, you will be inspired to add some of these urban areas to your travel plans in the near future.

Let’s start with our own contribution to this post and undoubtedly our favorite city in the United States (and possibly the world!) – the one and only ultimate 24-hour destination, NEW YORK CITY!

• New York City

It’s not called the ultimate 24-hour city of the world for nothing and we can well and truly attest that a weekend in New York City is an amazing experience! We have been fortunate to take several trips to the Big Apple for a weekend (or long weekend) and this is ample time to explore the beautiful borough of Manhattan.

Of course, you could quite easily spend much more time…as long as you have a large enough wallet to handle the retail therapy you will likely experience at some point along 5th Avenue!

Whether you are visiting New York City for the first time to explore the infamous attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Central Park, or you are returning as a frequent visitor, the Big Apple will never cease to amaze you!

Sure, it’s not for everyone and there will always be critics of this city but honestly, it’s one of those iconic cities around the world you just have to experience for yourselves. Don’t ever let anyone judge NYC for you!

Great weather, huge events, and amazing food continue to bring people from all around the world to visit Austin. At the center of the city is the largest state capitol in the US and is worth a visit, especially if you take a free guided tour.

Leaving the capital and heading south will take you to Austin’s well know 6th Street. Here you with find bar after bar, many with live bands playing, contributing to Austin’s reputation as the live music capital of the world.

If you come in the summer time, it may take some effort to stay cool. You can stay downtown and swim in the naturally fed Barton Springs Pool, find one of the many other swimming holes or you can go Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.

You can not leave Austin without stuffing yourself full of brisket and tacos. There are plenty of BBQ options. If you don’t mind waiting hours in line there is the legendary Franklin’s BBQ . For a shorter line, you can make your way to La Barbecue . To experience an authentic, Texas countryside feeling and all you can eat options, a trip to The Salt Lick in Driftwood is worth the drive. To help you understand what the fuss about tacos is, make your way to Torchy’s and try a few. Don’t forget the queso!

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best cities in the USA, a small and lively city with so much to do. This Carolina mountain town is a cool pocket of Bohemia nestled amongst more traditionally “southern” communities.

Asheville is known for its arts, its mountains, and increasingly, its breweries. With so many breweries per capita and an endless supply of amazing cuisine, it’s the finest spot to enjoy southern-style grits and BBQ and kick back with a refreshing local beer. And don’t forget all the delicious coffee shops.

When traveling in Asheville, don’t forget to visit the sprawling Biltmore Estate mansion (America’s largest private home) and hike to some waterfalls along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway.

The epitome of romantic beauty and southern charm, Savannah is a city that packs enough layers to entertain any traveler.

Whether you want to stroll Jones Street and the classic squares to admire the incredible architecture and dripping Spanish moss, or eat your heart out at delectable restaurants like The Olde Pink House and Mrs. Wilkes, or even learn about Savannah’s seedy history via a ghost tour or trip to Bonaventure Cemetery, there is something in the city for everyone.

Everyone should put a visit to the Lonestar State at the top of their list and Dallas (along with Fort Worth) is the perfect place to start. There is so much to pack into a weekend break, with visits to museums and the gorgeous Dallas Arboretum , beautiful outdoor adventures on lakes and hikes, stadium tours, wildlife encounters – and not forgetting a bit of the wild west, there really is something for everyone.

Minneapolis

Minneapolis is nicknamed the “Mini-apple” because it has more theater seats per capita than any other U.S. city next to New York.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area is called the Twin Cities by locals, and in addition to the abundance of live theater, you will find world-class museums, award-winning restaurants, an ever growing list of breweries, countless parks, and lakes, and iconic live music venues such as First Avenue.

In the summer, hop in a kayak and paddle down the Mississippi River or along the Chain of Lakes, visit the famous Spoon and Cherry Sculpture, catch an outdoor movie in one of the many parks, or ride a bike along the Greenway, a peaceful bike trail that runs through the city. When the weather starts getting cold, go cross-country skiing, marvel at ice sculptures during the Winter Carnival or ice skate on one of a frozen lake.

Also, don’t forget to try the signature “Jucy Lucy”, a tasty burger with melted cheese on the inside. No matter the season, the Twin Cities always has something fun on the calendar!

Just kidding, there is way more to experience in this part of Minnesota but for those looking for a little retail therapy, it’s definitely THE place to go!

San Diego is definitely one of the best cities in the USA. With its stunning sunsets over the bay and perfect weather, you can’t go wrong with a visit to this southern Californian city. San Diego has something for everyone, from history to natural beauty, and all within walking distance.

The top attraction is the picturesque Balboa Park, home to museums, the world famous San Diego Zoo, various gardens, and it even has free Wi-Fi throughout. Love walking tours? Head to the park’s tourist office to join one of their great free walking tours of the park.

Other highlights include Seaport Village, home to shops and restaurants along the bay, Coronado Island, and the charming Gaslamp Quarter, home to historic Victorian buildings full of shops and restaurants.

I also suggest taking the 2-Day Trolley Tour & Seal Tour combo which is a great way to orient yourself to the city. The Trolley Tour portion takes you on a historic trolley and covers everything from the downtown to Coronado Island. And the Seal Tour portion takes you out onto the water to learn more of the city’s rich history, plus see a plethora of sea lions.

• San Francisco

Three days is the perfect amount of time to enjoy San Francisco, California. You can visit a few of the tourist sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of the Arts, and Alcatraz. Plus you’ll have time to explore deeper into what makes the city.

Walk the neighborhoods like Haight-Asbury, the Mission, Hayes Valley, and Marina. Take in one of the urban hikes through Golden Gate Park or the Presidio. Eat your way through all the ethnic food you can find across the neighborhoods, a foodie favorite is Little Italy (North Beach).

Take in a show at the Filmore or the Orpheum. Enjoy craft cocktails in spots like Bourbon and Branch, a speakeasy, or at one of the sky high bars up on Nob Hill. Visit museums like the Museum of Modern Art that just reopened or The Walt Disney Family Museum.

Make a few plans over your weekend but above everything, my favorite thing to do in San Francisco is to just walk and get distracted by all the great places there are to explore.

There’s no better way to spend a weekend than by visiting Tampa Bay. The best part is you get to experience three cities in one during your stay. The combo of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater are sure to make your trip one of the best ever!

One reason your next trip should be to Tampa Bay is because of the beaches. St. Petersburg and Clearwater have some of the best beaches in the USA. From water biking to kayaking to laying on the beach, whatever water activity you’re dreaming of, you can do it here.

Entertainment is nonstop and the Tampa Riverwalk is 2.4-miles of excitement. With playgrounds, splash parks, art, music, museums, and more along the path, there’s more than enough to occupy everyone. Speaking of entertainment, make sure not to miss out on the world-renowned amusement park, Busch Gardens Tampa, which has some of America’s best roller coasters, shows, animal encounters and so much more.

And before you head home, take a walk through the late 1800’s in the National Historic Landmark District of Ybor City and buy some Cuban cigars for your drive home!

Boston’s winters can be brutal, so spring is when the city comes alive. There are plenty of warm-weather activities to entertain weekend visitors – from seeing the historic sites along the 2.5-mile long Freedom Trail to checking out a Red Sox game at Fenway Park to taking a leisurely boat ride around Boston Harbor.

And no spring trip to Boston is complete without spending time strolling through the Boston Common and Public Garden.

If it rains, you can explore one of the world-class museums like the Museum of Science or Museum of Fine Arts or pay a visit to one of the many local breweries – Samuel Adams is the oldest and most popular.

If you want to watch the annual running of the Boston Marathon in person, then plan your visit for the third weekend in April (Just be sure to book your hotel room far in advance!).

Nashville is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway in the US. Nashville has it all – some of the best music in the country, an amazing food scene, gorgeous and adventurous outdoor opportunities as well as a spectacular selection of art, unique shopping and much more!

A weekend is not enough time to visit this wonderful city and see it all – I’ve lived here my whole life and am still finding new places and things to do but here are some of my favorite things to suggest for a first timer’s visit to my hometown:

Hike around Radnor Lake

Just a little south of downtown, Radnor Lake State Park sits nestled in between several residential neighborhoods. If you didn’t know it was there, you would never even guess.

Radnor is highly beloved by locals and on a gorgeous day, you’ll have to even fight for a parking spot. There are some trails from easy beginner to difficult located in the park but if you’re looking for something just quick to experience Radnor, do the lake trail – it just circles the lake and is mostly flat. Radnor is also great for avid bird watchers.

Explore 12South Neighborhood

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Nashville is 12South and it has so much to offer. If you’re hungry, try popsicles at Las Paletas, cupcakes from the cupcake ATM at Sprinkles, donuts from Five Daughters, Bartaco and Burger Up. If you’re thirsty, try The Filling Station and Ember’s Ski Lodge for spirits or Frothy Monkey for coffee.

If you want to get outside, head down to Sevier Park and have a picnic! If your main goal is shopping, 12South has tons of unique shops like Draper James, Imogene + Willie and White’s Mercantile.

Go Honky Tonkin’

While it is definitely more touristy than my other suggestions, I always say everyone needs to experience Lower Broad at least one time in their life. The lights, the country music pouring out of every open bar door, the cowboy boots – it’s all so cliche but if you can accept and get past that, it’s so much fun too.

Make sure to check out Acme Feed + Seed while you’re down there – a four-story honky-tonk, restaurant, and bar!

• New Orleans

Gorgeous architecture reminiscing of European capitals, delicious food with French, Spanish and African origins, and the best jazz music in the country – New Orleans has it all! You can make a day-by-day plan and visit as many attractions as you can, or simply arrive in the French Quarter, walk the streets in no particular direction and marvel at the balconies and galleries covered with hanging fern.

The French Quarter is the most popular place among tourists, so it’s a good idea to explore the rest of the city which is less crowded but just as beautiful. The Garden District is great for long walks under oak trees and exploring the fascinating historic houses in NOLA (you can even find some celebrity homes). Lafayette Cemetery will give you some quiet time and a look into New Orleans’ historic past if you take a guided tour.

In case you have an extra half a day, rent a car and drive to Oak Alley, one of the most beautiful plantations in the South. It takes only an hour to get there, but the views are well worth it! (Alternatively, book a tour of Oak Alley with one of New Orleans tour operators. Then you won’t have to worry about transport).

Lastly, but most importantly, try local cuisine! New Orleans has amazing foods like beignets, gumbo, and muffulettas that you won’t be able to try anywhere else in the world.

Portland is currently one of the hottest city to visit! Portland is well known for the beer, coffee, and abundance of food carts. Whether you like food, hiking, or drinking beer, you’ll feel right at home in Portland. Start your day with some Stumptown coffee and brunch from one of the specialty spots in Portland (Jam or Mothers Bistro is a good place to start). Stroll along the waterfront, hang out at Powell’s Bookstore or take a hike through Forest Park.

The best thing about Portland is all the beautiful scenery you can find within a couple hours. Portland is the perfect starting point for a scenic drive around Oregon. A road trip through the state is the perfect way to spend your time in Portland.

From Portland, head east for 30 miles to marvelous Multnomah Falls, with plenty of options if you like to hike, including one of our favorites Angels Rest, and gorgeous views of Columbia River Gorge. Continue southeast to Bend, where you will find Smith Rock State Park, one of the seven wonders of Oregon, and the mecca for rock-climbing (and hiking).

Don’t forget to cross over to the west side of the state to drive along the US-101 and see all the beauty the Oregon Coast has to offer. Head back to Portland, and end the day with more great food and beers because there’s plenty of both in Portland!

• Washington DC

Washington DC is an amazing city with a list of must-sees and should-dos that would keep you entertained for months. Of course, there are the monuments and memorials, museums, Congress and the White House. That alone can keep you busy for a week.

But there are so many more hidden spots that are worth checking out and fun things to do in Washington DC and here are a few ideas:

• Take a stroll at the National Arboretum, a beautiful park that showcases traditional gardens from around the world. They have a bonsai exhibit, an Asian Valley and an Azalea forest.
• Check out some of the fun neighborhoods, like Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Eastern Market, or Columbia Heights. You’ll find amazing restaurants, little parks, fun shops and boutiques.
• Eat! You’ll find restaurants for every ethnic food your heart desires, no matter how obscure. Be adventurous and eat your way around the world.

Washington DC is blessed to have a myriad of free attractions around the Mall and clearly, there are a lot of other reasons why we should be considering a visit here in the near future.

Ask any Chicagoan for our must-see sights, and we’ll tell you to you to hit the neighborhoods. All of the diverse neighborhoods are home to delicious food, unique shops and spots you won’t find anywhere else. Here’s a sampling of the best Chicago neighborhoods worth exploring during a weekend getaway:

Pilsen – Pilsen was a Ukrainian and German enclave that is now largely Latino, boasting some of the best tiny taco joints you’ll find. For the adventurous, Birrerria de Octolan has tasty fixings for goat tacos at very reasonable prices ($12 once fed four of us!). Try Modern Cooperative for mid-century modern furniture or visit the free National Museum of Mexican Art’s ever-changing collection.

Andersonville –  This Swedish domain has lots of shopping and great eats. I’m in love with Hopleaf’s endless beer list and mussels with frites, as well as the indie market, Anderson Galleria. Great theater resides with the Neo-Futurists and the pH Comedy Theater.

Devon Avenue – A long and diverse street, you’ll see strong Indian, Orthodox Jewish, Russian and Assyrian populations. I start off at Viceroy of India’s reasonable buffet and never miss perusing Resham’s gorgeous textiles, Sukhadia’s Indian candy with nut flavors, and the array of jewelry and clothing shops down Devon.

Wherever you venture, test out the local spots and quirky shops in the neighborhoods, and you’ll find the real Chicago every time.

Anyone who visits Miami Beach will certainly fall in love with the vibrant latin culture, gorgeous beaches, and delicious food options. Whether you’re making a quick stop here before embarking on a cruise, checking out one of the popular music festivals in Miami, or heading down here for a Winter Escape, you will never find a shortage of things to do in Miami.

Besides lounging on the beach and enjoying the Florida sun, make sure you visit the artistic district of Wynwood to explore its unbelievable street graffiti and “hipster”.

• Los Angeles

Forget the Hollywood visions of Los Angeles that have filled your head. Instead, explore LA through its burgeoning art scene located downtown (DTLA). The once gritty streets are bursting at the seams with hip hotels, an abundance of independent shops, cafes and hidden bars and of course art everywhere you turn.

Settle in at the Ace Hotel (or The Standard) for a trendy vibe offering visitors a slice of “LA cooldom,” before venturing out on a graffiti art tour in LA’s most exciting neighborhood, the Arts District.

Next head over to the beautiful Broad Museum showcasing some of the best contemporary art including the mesmerizing Infinity Mirror Room.

Take a peek at Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall and downtown’s community square, Grand Park. With a fountain to cool down in, playgrounds and lots of room to spread out, weekends often bring the crowds for craft shows, concerts and more.

Head to this world-class city on the Pacific North-West coast of America and find a city with lots to offer visitors.

Arriving in Seattle on the clipper from Victoria in Canada means one thing – a fantastic sea-view of its most iconic structure – the Space Needle Heading to the top of the Space Needle at 605 feet tall ensures great views of the city as well as Mt Rainier, Puget Sound and the surrounding Olympic and Cascades mountain ranges. It must surely be a must-see on any visit to the city.

Take a stroll around Pike Place Market – possibly Seattle’s most iconic attraction – and wander the fruit and vegetable stalls. Stop and admire the beautiful flowers for sale and browse the many shops. Choose from the many eateries on offer or sip a coffee at the original Starbucks and people-watch.

Don’t forget to stop by the famous gum wall whilst at the market…it is certainly different! In 2015, 2350 pounds of gum was removed from Post Alley but the gum quickly returned!

For visitors seeking something more than the hustle and bustle of the city head to Discovery Park or Seward Park for a stroll and experience the wonderful forests and local wildlife.

If you are looking for a city that epitomizes a vast array of neighborhoods that combine to create a perfect urban environment, look no further than the Gateway City, also known as St. Louis! Located along the Mississippi River, St. Louis is an iconic location given the history as being renowned as the “Gateway to the West.”

A visit to St. Louis today offers an opportunity for visitors to experience the amazing Gateway Arch which is perhaps one of the most iconic attractions throughout the central United States. For those of you that love to attend a ball game, the St. Louis Cardinals are one of the most avidly followed MLB teams and Busch Stadium is certainly worth a visit.

St. Louis is home to Anheuser-Busch and a free brewery tour is definitely worthwhile. Perhaps you prefer a local craft brewery experience and we can highly recommend visiting Schlafly Craft Brewery.

• Oklahoma City

Visiting Oklahoma City for the first time, I have to admit we had very little expectations. However, when we left OKC following an amazing weekend, we realized that this is well and truly an underrated city that deserves to be on everyone’s radar.

Whether you are intrigued by the myriad of trendy neighborhoods throughout the city or perhaps want to head a little further afield to experience the amazing Pops 66 Soda Ranch in nearby Arcadia, Oklahoma City is well worth visiting for a few days.

Downtown Oklahoma City has been transformed into a thriving neighborhood, particularly the Bricktown District where you can hop on a water taxi and take a relaxing cruise around the canal system to appreciate some of the finer attractions around the city.

Sample some of the finest cuisine here or venture to one of the other neighborhoods such as the Midtown or Plaza districts and an eclectic blend of cuisine awaits. I’m sure many of you associate Oklahoma City with cowboys and western movies. Why not head over to The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum to really appreciate the history of this culture throughout Oklahoma?

We spent the perfect weekend in Oklahoma City and we hope that you will consider adding this to your upcoming travel plans sooner rather than later!

If you are looking for the best cities to visit in the USA, I think it’s fair to say we have a pretty awesome list to choose from here! USA is home to a variety of iconic cities but there are also a number of lesser known gems that are well worth experiencing. The likes of Savannah, Asheville and Oklahoma City may not have been the first cities you would think about visiting but as you can see, there are plenty of reasons why these should be on all of our radars.

8.  Salt Lake City, UT

No matter where you are in Salt Lake City, the snowcapped Rocky Mountains are never out of sight. They tower over the uber-clean city, a stunning landscape fit for a painting. And while Salt Lake is well-known for its Mormon heritage, there's more to the scene here than meets the eye. Restaurants range from the fine-dining favorite Log Haven to a healthy variety of ethnic and international restaurants. And while alcohol isn't as readily available here as in some cities, it's much easier to find than you think, including at the White Horse  downtown. Start at the Hotel Erwin’s rooftop in Venice for an expansive view of the whole city, then explore everything from the ocean to the mountains as you crisscross L.A. County. Expect its famous traffic to slow you down as you head to Malibu for a surfing session; make a pit stop at the Getty Museum , then step in the stars’ footprints at TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood . Blow your shopping budget on Rodeo Drive , then head south to Anaheim to pilot the Millenium Falcon at Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge universe.

11.  Nashville, TN

Honky-tonks and museums might not seem to go together, but their marriage in Nashville is a strong one indeed. For some drinking and dancing, head straight for Broadway, where Legend’s Corner , Nudie’s , and Tootsie’s have been serving up country, blues, and whiskey forever. You can start early (10am) and go late into the night (3am) in Music City—if you’ve got the fortitude, of course. Is day drinking not your idea of vacation fun? Start with the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum  and move on to the museums devoted to Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash ; all are right downtown and terrific. See Historic RCA Studio B , where Elvis made countless records, and drive out to the Bluebird Cafe and the Grand Ole Opry . One of America’s most beautiful cities, stately Washington, D.C. just keeps getting better. The National Mall is truly majestic, with the Capitol building glowing at one end, the Lincoln Memorial at the other, and various Smithsonian museums lining each side. See them all (take a look at our list of the best museums in D.C . for a start), but plan to spend extra time at the new(ish) National Museum of African American History & Culture . Beyond politics, monuments and museums, D.C. boats some cool, emerging neighborhoods like the Wharf (eat at Officina or Del Mar de Fabio Trabocchi ) and Southeast, where the Nationals play baseball and craft beer rules at Bluejacket nearby. For a small-town vibe in a big city, St. Louis is the place to be. Settled by Europeans in 1764, this 'Gateway to the West' has long been the center of America. A few musts while in town: a visit to the famous (and giant) Gateway Arch , a walk through the National Blues Museum , and a stop at BB’s Jazz Blues and Soups . The Best Weekend Getaways in the U.S. for a Quick Escape

Air travel has been tricky at best over the last couple of years, so many people have turned back to the classic American getaway: a road trip . It’s an ideal way to explore your own backyard on a whim for a memorable vacation, either this summer or later this year.

We took five of the country’s major hubs and found four weekend getaway ideas for each, all easily accessible detours. Read on for our picks for the best weekend getaways around the U.S., along with tips for where to stay and what to do while you're there

From Los Angeles

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs, California

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Dive deeper into the history of this style via a three-hour tour with architectural historian and author Michael Stern , which includes the chance to visit private homes. Among the countless hotels decked out in midcentury-modern stylings for an overnight, the Parker Palm Springs remains the standout—a riot of color and witty touches from designer Jonathan Adler.

Paso Robles, California

Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. And even if San Diego has 24/7 beach weather, don’t forget: This is the Christmas Capital of America .

From Chicago

Southwest Michigan

Saugatuck and its surroundings in Southwest Michigan have recently attracted newcomers due to a focus on the state’s extraordinary produce (Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity). Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Cave Point in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

Boonsboro, Maryland

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? Nowhere better to overnight than Inn Boonsboro , owned by novelist Nora Roberts, where each of the eight rooms is named after a fictional couple like The Princess Bride’s Westley and Buttercup.

Alexandria, Virginia

It might only be a 20-minute drive away—or shorter, if you hop on the metro—but this historic town still feels like a getaway and consistently ranks among the top five small cities in the country in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

​​Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

In this post, I’ll share the very best places to visit for a weekend getaway in the USA that can be explored in just a short amount of time.

Best US Weekend Getaways

New York must be the most popular weekend getaway in the US.

As the most populated city in the entire United States, it’s easy to understand that New York City is a must-see.

From the shining lights of Times Square to the towering skyscrapers in Manhattan, it’s recognizable from anywhere.

Start your visit wandering down the streets of Times Square and enjoy all of the shopping. You can even stop into iconic stores such as Hershey’s Chocolate World and M&M’s World.

Have a picnic in Central Park, visit the iconic Empire State Building, and learn about the history of 9/11 at the memorial.

Of course if this weekend trip is your first time in New York you can’t miss the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. And stop to take a picture of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

No matter what you do in NYC though, it’s a great way to spend a weekend!

2. Stillwater, Minnesota

Many people overlook Minnesota when planning a vacation, but it really should be visited more! The small town of Stillwater makes for a perfect place to escape to.

It’s located on the banks of the St. Croix River and offers visitors a chance to explore Minnesota’s first official town.

Wander along the sidewalk that follows the river and enjoy the views of boats passing under the Stillwater Lift Bridge.

Main Street in Stillwater also offers a lot to visitors, from delicious restaurants to adorable local shops.

Stop into the Tilted Tiki for a unique bite to eat, and then grab dessert at Minnesota Nice Cream. I really love stopping at MN Nice Cream because they have such unique desserts. My favorite is the Fun Cone, which has fruity pebbles!

Stillwater is also home to a huge variety of boutique hotels and bed and breakfasts for your stay. The Water Street Inn is one of the best, and it features a rooftop restaurant to dine at.

3. San Diego, California

Known for its location along the coast of Southern California and its idyllic beaches, San Diego makes a great weekend getaway for the entire family.

There are plenty of beaches to relax on and soak up the warm California sun. Even during the winter months, San Diego is still pretty warm!

Being located right on the border with Mexico, you can also enjoy some fantastic Mexican food here. Old Town is a good area for that, and a nice place to learn more about the city’s history.

And with famous destinations like the San Diego Zoo and LEGOLAND California, your kids will also have a blast!

For nature lovers, escape to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which offers nice hiking trails with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and its rugged coastline.

4. Bayfield, Wisconsin

If you want to escape some of the crowds of larger cities, pay a visit to Bayfield, Wisconsin for your US weekend getaway.

This charming small town sits on the shoreline of Lake Superior and boasts some of the most beautiful views of the largest freshwater lake.

One of the best things to do here is explore Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This stunning stretch of land features views of sandstone cliffs and caves that line the shore.

You can hike along the shore and take in the views, or get on the water in a kayak and wander into the caves. This can either be done with a guide or by yourself.

And if kayaking isn’t your thing you can also book a boat tour that takes you from Bayfield to the Apostle Islands.

Bayfield makes for the perfect escape for travelers who love the outdoors.

5. Nashville, Tennessee

Are you a music lover? Then Nashville, Tennessee, the Music City, is going to be the best place for you! A getaway here guarantees a vibrant and unforgettable experience!

Enjoy the music scene at iconic places like the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Or make a stop at some of the bars and live music venues to enjoy live music. Ole Red and Honky Tonk Central are two of the best places on Broadway that have live music often.

Broadway Street is one of the best places to just wander and dip into the bars, restaurants, and venues that line the street.

6. Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minnesota isn’t just a land of snow and ice, it has plenty of fun activities for travelers also! In the sister city to St. Paul, Minneapolis, you can explore all sorts of fun things.

Spend time on the lakes, as Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes . Bde Maka Ska and Lake Nokomis are two local favorites.

Make a stop at the Mall of America for some shopping and see the city’s art scene at the Minneapolis Institute of Art or the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

For history buffs , stop in the many museums, like the Mill City Museum. Then spend some time wandering downtown and visiting places like First Avenue.

Also in Downtown, there are many great places to eat near the University of Minnesota , and Dinkytown offers a unique feel for visitors.

I lived 30 minutes from Minneapolis and one of my favorite places to go was Minnehaha Falls because it allows you to escape into nature without leaving the city. I also really love Theodore Wirth Regional Park.

7. Chicago, Illinois

As the largest city in the Midwest, and often listed as one of the most beautiful cities in the US , Chicago is worth seeing.

Known for its tasty food, great music scene, and architecture , Chicago is easy to add to your bucket list.

Start your time off in Millenium Park and snap a picture or two in front of the giant Bean sculpture. Then head over to Willis Tower to walk over the thrilling Skydeck. Below, you’ll see the massive city through a glass floor.

Chicago is well known for its deep-dish pizza , so be sure to try a slice or two. Going on a food tour is a great way to experience the food scene like a local.

Chicago is also located on the shores of Lake Michigan, so you can visit Navy Pier and enjoy views of the Great Lake.

8. Branson, Missouri

Known as the ‘Live Entertainment Capital of the World,’ Branson is a fantastic weekend getaway for those who love live shows.

There are over 100 shows happening in Branson at a time, played in over 20 theaters. Everything from comedy to live music and even unique groups like the Blue Man Group. Nearly everyone will find a show they love.

Along with the performances, you can also enjoy things like Silver Dollar City, an amusement park, the Titanic Museum, and the Hollywood Wax Museum.

Dolly Parton’s Stampede is another popular attraction for dinner and a show.

9. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is one of the most well-known cities in the United States and makes for a fun weekend getaway in the US.

Spend some time wandering down the Las Vegas Strip, bouncing in and out of casinos, and checking out all of the delicious places to eat.

Head on over to Fremont Street for a whole new experience of things like listening to live music and watching people soar overhead on a zip line.

After the sun has gone down, head back to the Strip and watch the Bellagio Water Show at Fountains of Bellagio.

10. Zion National Park, Utah

For nature lovers, Zion National Park is the perfect spot to escape for a weekend. Plus, it’s only 2 hours outside of Las Vegas.

Zion has stunning natural features that are must-sees. From the bright red cliffs of Angels Landing to the towering canyon walls of the Narrows, you’ll feel like you’re on another planet.

Embark on a few hikes, such as the two I named above, which are some of the most famous hikes in the country.

During my recent visit to Zion, I learned that if you’re going to hike the Narrows, you should go as early as possible to avoid crowds! Nevertheless, it’s a phenomenal hike and is one of my favorites!

Or just take a ride on the park shuttle to enjoy the views. You can also drive through the park, as long as it isn’t on the main road, and stop at many of the viewpoints on your own.

11. Seattle, Washington

Seattle is a beautiful city located on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest. It’s well known for having fantastic views of mountains and being the Rainy City.

While in Seattle, be sure to see the famous Space Needle. Either view it from the ground or ride the elevator to the top and see aerial views of Seattle.

A great way to enjoy the nature around you is to go whale watching. Orcas and humpbacks migrate through the Sound, and you can spot them from tour boats.

Also, visit the Pike Place Market and grab a cup of coffee at the Original Starbucks while you’re in Seattle!

12. Miami, Florida

If you’re in need of a tropical beach vacation for your USA weekend getaway, Miami is the perfect destination for you!

Miami is well known for its warm, sunny weather and its vibrant nightlife . It’s also the gateway to the beautiful Florida Keys.

Spend some time relaxing on the beach in Miami, particularly Miami Beach. Here you’ll find towering palm trees and soft, white sand.

At night, head out to the many bars and venues that have live music and experience the parties that never end in Miami. The nightlife is one of its most famous features!

If you have time, make a trip down the Florida Keys and try out snorkeling or scuba diving to spot some tropical marine life.

13. Bar Harbor, Maine

A unique national park in New England is Acadia National Park, which is easily explored in just a few short days, with the small town of Bar Harbor as your base.

Start off your visit on Cadillac Mountain, where you can be one of the first people in the country to see the sunrise. You will need a permit for this!

Then head down for some hiking. The Beehive Trail and the Jordan Pond Path are two of the best. You can also walk along the Ocean Path, which leads you right along the coastline.

Be sure to see the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and grab a popover at Jordan Pond House. Then head into Bar Harbor to wander Main Street, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the adorable small town.

If you have time, head over to Ellsworth and stop at Momo’s Cheesecakes. It was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Maine!

14. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Located on a peninsula of Massachusetts on Cape Cod Bay, Cape Cod is a fantastic place for a weekend getaway in the US.

This small area is well known for its beautiful sandy coastline. It’s home to small fishing villages, lighthouses, and has a long historic background. Cape Cod is where the Mayflower made its first landing back in the 1600s.

Today, you can spend time exploring the Cape Cod National Seashore, go whale watching off the coast, and wander through the museums.

A few of the most famous ones include the Sandwich Glass Museum, the Pilgrim Monument, and Provincetown Museum.

15. Jackson, Wyoming

As the gateway to Grand Teton National Park , it’s no wonder why Jackson, Wyoming has become so popular.

Surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Teton range and having plenty of fun activities for the entire family, Jackson makes for a perfect escape from real life.

Start your time off by attending a show at the Jackson Hole Playhouse, then dip into a few of the many Old Western-themed shops.

If you’re visiting in winter, hit the slopes at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. And during the summer months, head into Grand Teton National Park.

Go for a hike in the park and keep an eye out for wildlife such as moose and bears. You might even see a moose wandering the streets of Jackson!

16. San Francisco, California

The city of San Francisco is famous for many things, from the Golden Gate Bridge to the island of Alcatraz.

A weekend trip to San Francisco will be filled with all sorts of fun adventures, for everyone from city goers to nature lovers.

For city goers, visit the viewpoint of the Golden Gate Bridge, visit Chinatown, and wander the coast at Pier 39. I can also highly recommend booking a tour to see Alcatraz.

For those who prefer to be in nature, head up to Point Reyes National Seashore. This stunning coastline has hikes along the ocean and offers the chance to spot whales. There’s also a lighthouse here to see.

My favorite hike in Point Reyes was the Chimney Rock Trail! It has some of the most beautiful views of the coastline and we saw quite a few whales in the distance.

17. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Located just over an hour’s drive north of Denver, Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most famous parks in the country.

Drive along Trail Ridge Road from Estes Park to Grand Lake and stop at the many viewpoints of the Rocky Mountains.

Hikes can be found everywhere you look, with the most popular being along Bear Lake Road. Here you can find trails that lead to several alpine lakes and waterfalls.

While you’re in the area, explore some of Estes Park, the small town outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. Small shops and restaurants line the streets and make for an adorable mountain town.

18. Portland, Oregon

Known by many nicknames, Portland, Oregon is one of the best places in the PNW for a short getaway.

Portland has so many great ways to get outdoors and embrace the outdoorsyness of the Pacific Northwest. From Washington Park to the Portland Japanese Garden, there are many ways to enjoy nature.

Enjoy the fascinating views of Mount Hood in the distance, and maybe even take a day trip out to Oregon’s tallest mountain.

Other fun activities include checking out Powell’s City of Books, wandering around Tom McCall Waterfront Park (especially during spring for cherry blossoms!), and attending the Portland Saturday Market.

I lived in Portland for 6 months and loved visiting the unique McMenamin restaurants. My favorite was the McMenamins St. Johns Theater & Pub.

You can easily spend a weekend here in Portland for a great time for the whole family.

19. Moab, Utah

If you’re looking for a great outdoorsy city to visit for a weekend getaway , then Moab is perfect for you!

As the gateway to Arches National Park, Moab offers the chance to explore one of Utah’s 5 national parks .

Arches is home to over 2,000 named arches as well as many more pinnacles, balanced rocks, and more. The park provides visitors with plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with these arches on hiking trails.

A few of the most popular ones are Delicate Arch, the Windows, and Landscape Arch.

You can also check out Dead Horse Point State Park, which is just 40 minutes away, and Corona Arch.

Other adventures in Moab include skydiving, river rafting , and riding ATVs through the desert.

From the beaches of Miami to the lighthouses of New England, there is no shortage of variety when looking for unique East Coast weekend getaways, and we adore them all.

While covering everywhere worth visiting on the US East Coast is a project for a lifetime (we’re constantly adding places to our wish list!), when it comes to cities on the East Coast to visit, there are some that consistently rank among the best.

For this guide, we’ve focused (with one exception), on East Coast cities with a population of over 100,000 people.

We love small American towns and beautiful beaches as much as the next road trippers, but we’ll save those for another post.

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit on the East Coast.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

No, not Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this weekend getaway on the East Coast, you absolutely can.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a quick weekend trip?

Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately!

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

• The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
• The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

• Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
• Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

• CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
• Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

• Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
• StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

• The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
• Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

• Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
• The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
• Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

• Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
• The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Atlanta–and Georgia overall–are hotspots for filming movies and TV shows ranging from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things.

There are plenty of filming location tours available that are ready to help you find both iconic and hidden locations!

• Epicurean Atlanta, Autograph Collection : Luxury travelers consider staying at the Epicurean Atlanta, Autograph Collection, which is such a beautiful, unique property that it’s worth it to see the terrace.

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Away from its iconic theme parks, though, there is still plenty to do in Central Florida!

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

• The Delaney Hotel : For a stay in Downtown Orlando this is the best pick for your hotel. Rooms are clean and classic and the hotel is a short walk to Church Street Station.
• Caribe Royale : If you are looking for a resort close to Disney, this is the one. There is a fabulous pool and poolside bar, and a shuttle service to the Disney ticket office.

Washington, DC, was named The New York Times' No. 1 place to travel in 2020, making it a top weekend trip destination.

The capital of the United States, Washington, DC, was ranked first on The New York Times' list of " 52 Places to Go in 2020 ." 

The city can make for a weekend trip full of possibility, as it's home to historic landmarks and memorials, world-famous museums, and some of the nation's best cuisine.

DC's Metro makes it easy to explore the city's various neighborhoods, from Georgetown to Foggy Bottom. The DC Metro was named the   nation's best transit system   in 2016 by financial services firm SmartAsset,   which used Census Bureau data to determine the winner.

A three-day trip to DC offers more than visiting national monuments — it also leaves time to explore the outskirts of the city, such as the   colonial homes of Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia .

Cincinnati, Ohio, is a vibrant, underrated city in the Midwest that's full of culture.

Cincinnati is known for its cultural institutions, including the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Cincinnati Zoo.

The Greater Cincinnati area is also unique because it's home to some of the region's most historic religious sites and houses of worship — from the   Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption , which opened in 1837, to   Plum Street Temple , a Jewish synagogue known for its detailed architecture.  

The city also has a vibrant local brewery scene, and its food claim-to-fame is a classic: Skyline Chili, a traditional Midwestern take on chili dogs.

For a seaside trip that's off the beaten path, look into Friday Harbor on Washington state's San Juan Islands.

TripAdvisor called Friday Harbor, a fishing village on the San Juan Islands, one of the top 20 weekend trips to take in the US.

For fans of water-side activities like dolphin- and whale-watching, lighthouse tours, and quiet days by the beach, Friday Harbor could be worth a look. Travelers can even plan a trip in time for the   San Juan Islands' Lavender Festival,   which looks like an attraction straight from the lavender fields of Southern France.

Nashville is full of music and legendary local eats: the recipe for a memorable weekend journey.

In all kinds of weather, Nashville is a place where there's always something to do, listen to, and eat, which makes it worthy of exploring for a weekend.

The city is not technically the home of country music, but it's known as Music City and is quintessentially filled with sounds of country and blues. It's also where many American country stars have gotten their start in the music industry. 

Nashville's Downtown is one of its most popular districts, and   Broadway is a bustling spot filled with the city's most iconic bars and eateries.

Portland, Oregon, was named the No. 1 city in the US for foodies in 2019, and it's also known for its coffee culture.

Out of the 182 US cities featured in the study in 2019, Portland was ranked the 13th most affordable for foodies. It's also known for its high volume of craft breweries and wineries — having the second most per capita among US cities. It's also   renowned for its coffee scene.

Matthew Kepnes of   travel blog Nomadic Matt   wrote of Portland: "Here you'll find an impressive food truck scene, cool bespoke bars and cocktail lounges, a craft beer scene that's religion to residents, relaxing parks (including a peaceful Japanese garden), a vibrant art scene, and hiking in the nearby mountains."

Temecula, California, is considered an under-the-radar version of Napa Valley, and its wineries and hot-air balloon tours make it an ideal weekend destination.

Located in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego, Temecula is similar to Napa Valley in that it's home to state-of-the-art wineries, but it's less crowded than Napa, according to   TripAdvisor. 

Temecula's   Old Town district   has storefronts and architecture that date back to the late-1880s, making it a unique place to roam, shop, and eat.

The city is also known for its hot-air balloon tours, according to TripAdvisor, which are a picturesque way to see the city on a weekend trip.

St. Petersburg, Florida, is home to award-winning beaches and an impressive Salvador Dalí art museum.

St. Petersburg, Florida, is known for its idyllic beaches, but the Gulf Coast city also has a vibrant arts and culture scene.

Art-enthusiasts can spend hours at   The Dalí Museum   in St. Petersburg, which is   the only museum in the US that's dedicated solely to collections from the surrealist artist.   St. Pete is also home to a   collection of blown-glass sculptures   by famous glass artist Dale Chihuly.

As for a day at the beach, Clearwater Beach is the city's most famous —   it was named the best beach in America for 2018 and 2019   — but many locals swear by   Pass-A-Grille Beach , which is located in a smaller, historic district of St. Petersburg.

A weekend spent in Estes Park, Colorado, is an ideal way to explore the Rocky Mountains.

Estes Park is known as a base for the Rocky Mountain National Park , and is home to some of America's best spots for hiking, rafting, climbing, and   taking scenic drives.

TripAdvisor called Estes Park one of its best   long weekend trips   because of its proximity to the mountains. But Estes Park also has other things to do aside from exploring the Rockies, including visiting its   local breweries and wineries .

Charleston, South Carolina, is a coastal city known for its colorful streets, historic architecture, and coastal charm.

Charleston was named   Southern Living's best city in the South for 2019 , and it made it onto   TripAdvisor's travelers' choice list for 2019's top 25 US destinations.

"The city feels a bit like it's suspended in time, thanks to its antebellum architecture and surrounding plantation landscapes," as described by TripAdvisor's travelers' choice rankings.

From the colorful buildings that make up   Rainbow Row , a famous street of pastel-painted houses, to the city's   Battery , which is full of antebellum-style homes, there's no shortage of things to see and explore during a weekend in Charleston.

Flagstaff, Arizona, is the state's best-kept secret, according to Travel Channel host Samantha Brown.

Flagstaff is the highest-elevated point of Route 66 in Arizona, and as Travel Channel host Samantha Brown writes,   the Southwestern city makes for a memorable weekend trip.

"At an   elevation of 7,000 feet , smack-dab in the world's largest ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff has it all," she wrote.

"It's not as popular as Phoenix or Sedona, but trust me: it's easy to fall in love with Flagstaff," Brown continued.

Flagstaff has 117 miles of bike lanes , making it accessible for travelers, especially avid-bikers, to enjoy the outdoors and explore the city. It's also within driving distance to the Grand Canyon, and history-enthusiasts will love its Route 66-charm, historic motels, and welcoming city center.

Memphis, Tennessee, is home to Civil Rights Movement landmarks and must-see spots for music-enthusiasts.

Memphis is home to the   National Civil Rights Museum , which was built on what was once the Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.,'s 1968 assassination.

The city, which is   often described as the birthplace of blues , also has tons to explore on the musical front, from Beale Street — which makes a lyric cameo in the song "Walking In Memphis" by Marc Cohn — to Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley.

Portland, Maine, is known for its lighthouse views and fresh seafood, but there's more to explore than lobster rolls.

Portland exudes the coastal feel of America's Northeast. Its   Harbor Fish Market is a local landmark , the city offers tons of historic tours, and its   Old Port waterfront district   — namely Commercial Street, one of the city's most iconic streets — is full of shops and restaurants to explore.

Chicago is filled with public art, renowned architecture, and bucket-list food items.

Located on Lake Michigan, a few days spent in Chicago can offer a taste of what the diverse Midwestern city has to offer.

From Navy Pier, the location of the city's beloved Ferris wheel, to   Millennium Park, which is home to the Cloud Gate   (the mirrored, bean-shaped structure pictured above) and other eye-catching public art installations — Chicago is full of places to explore. 

Chicago's theatre scene also affords opportunities to see Broadway shows, and the city's various neighborhoods, from German Village to the Loop, each have their own unique feel.

Asheville, North Carolina, makes for a weekend trip with something for everyone, from hiking through the Great Smoky Mountains to exploring the Biltmore estate.

Nomadic Matt   called Asheville the Portland, Oregon, of the North Carolina mountain region.

"Asheville is Portland in the North Carolina mountains: full of tasty craft beer, food, and hipsters," the blogger wrote.

Aside from its scenic mountain views, Asheville is home to the   Biltmore Mansion , the former estate of the Vanderbilt family built in the late 1890s. Today, visitors can take tours of the ornate residence and gardens. The trendy mountain city also has a plethora of farm-to-table eateries.

San Antonio, Texas, is a mix of old and new in America's West.

TripAdvisor experts have called San Antonio, Texas, one of the most   romantic weekend trips   in the US, and   US News ranked it one of its top places to visit in the state.

San Antonio is a mix of old and new. It is perhaps best-known for   the Alamo , which used to be a Spanish mission and fortress and dates back centuries. One of its most bustling modern spots is its 15-mile River Walk, which is   lined with restaurants and shops   and naturally attracts visitors to the city.

The Texas city also has tons of outdoor places to explore, like a   popular zoo   and a   colorful botanical garden.

The Best Car-Free US Cities For A Weekend Break

There's no denying that the US is the spiritual home of the road trip, and the country's cities are famously spread out and geared more towards cars than pedestrians. But don't think that means you can't spend a weekend in an awesome American city without four wheels. These 26 destinations offer walkable downtowns, excellent public transport and plenty of cycle paths for short weekend breaks without the car.

Salem, Massachusetts

A hub for history buffs, there's plenty to experience in Salem without a car. Known for its connection with the notorious witch trials of the 17th century, Salem was also one of the most significant seaports on the East Coast. Start your exploration at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, before perusing the Charter Street Historic District and the Salem Witch Village – all within easy reach of downtown. Don't miss out on visiting The Witch House: once the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, it's the only structure remaining in the city that has a direct connection to the trials.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

The capital of New Mexico might look like a sleepy mountain town, but it has lots going on – and you won't need a car to see it all. There are 14 museums, more than 250 galleries and 10 different art markets, so culture vultures will feel right at home. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and Museum of International Folk Art should be top of your must-visit list. For those looking to enjoy the city's easy connections to the outdoors, the River Trail stretches along the scenic Santa Fe river while the Rail Trail extends from the Railyard to the outskirts of the city.

Portland, Maine

Not to be confused with Portland, Oregon (more on that later), Portland, Maine is known as a very bike-friendly city. There's an extensive network of cycle lanes alongside a reliable and efficient public transport system, while the downtown and waterfront areas are easy to explore on foot. Don't miss the Portland Museum of Art or the city's famous seafood – benefitting from its Atlantic coast location, Portland is renowned for boasting some of the country's best food tours.

Chicago, Illinois

An extensive public transport system and several pedestrianized areas, like the famously photogenic Riverwalk, make Chicago very easy to visit without wheels. The 'L' train system connects many of the city's neighborhoods while lots of its top attractions, from the Art Institute to the Millennium Park, are within walking distance of each other in the downtown area known as the Loop. The city's top sights are well-connected so you'll be able to cover a lot of ground in a long weekend.

New York City, New York

Notorious for traffic, New York City is not only good to visit without a car, it's probably better. The extensive subway system can whisk travelers to any of its many neighborhoods and the city's most popular areas are very walkable once you're there. It's also home to one of America's most famous pedestrian infrastructure projects, the High Line, a one-and-a-half-mile-long (2.4km) elevated walkway running through the west of Manhattan. Many of New York's most iconic attractions, like the Empire State Building, Times Square and Central Park, are within walking distance of each other, though you may need more than a weekend to see them all.

Asheville, North Carolina

There are attractions just outside Asheville, like the Blue Ridge Parkway, that are hard to explore car-free, but there's plenty to keep you occupied in town. The downtown is packed with galleries, artists' studios and a thriving restaurant and craft beer scene for which the city is rightly well-known. Conveniently, a vintage trolley service connects important areas of downtown and beyond, including the Omni Grove Park Inn, River Arts District and Historic Biltmore Village (you can buy tickets from the visitor center). To explore the Biltmore Estate, there's also a  shuttle service that you can book by phone.

St Augustine, Florida

One of America's oldest cities, St Augustine is brimming with historic attractions that can comfortably be explored in a couple of days. The small Old City is a charming jumble of narrow streets and buildings more than 200 years old, and it's perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll along the Riverwalk, explore Westminster Street with its independent shops and restaurants or go shopping at the Providence Place Mall, before marveling at the WaterFire art installation on Providence River.

Miami Beach, Florida

For a balance between the buzz of the city and the tranquility of the beach, look no further than Miami Beach . With its walkable streets, free trolley service , bike-friendly infrastructure and famous water taxis, there are so many ways you can immerse yourself in the city's attractions without a car. Stroll along the postcard-perfect Ocean Drive, take in the Art Deco Historic District and explore South Beach. The city has also implemented a bike-sharing program called Citi Bike  that allows visitors to rent bikes for short-term use.

Sedona, Arizona

You might wish to spend some time wandering Sedona's Main Street, dipping into shops, restaurants and art galleries, but there's no denying that the reason most tourists come here is to see Red Rock State Park. If you're after an active weekend there are countless hiking and biking trails that lead straight out from the city so you can experience this unique landscape up close. You'll find plenty of bike rentals along Main Street, and, once back from the great outdoors, you can indulge in a spa with natural vortexes to soothe your aching muscles.

Savannah, Georgia

From lines of moss-draped oak trees to historic mansions, Savannah's delights are best experienced at a slower pace, so leave the car behind and embrace a weekend of leisurely strolls along pedestrian-friendly streets. The Historic District is the heart of the city and features 22 walkable squares, renowned for a blend of charming architectural styles ranging from Georgian to Italianate to Gothic Revival. Other top attractions, like Forsyth Park (pictured), City Market and the Owens-Thomas House can be reached on foot or via a hop-on hop-off trolley .

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston's iconic two-and-a-half-mile (4km) Freedom Trail is an excellent starting point for a car-free weekend, spanning no fewer than 17 historic monuments and finishing at the city's holocaust memorial. The city's compact downtown and well-planned streets mean that key neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and Back Bay are easy to navigate on foot, while the waterfront is also easy to explore thanks to the Boston Harborwalk. Bike-sharing schemes like Bluebikes are perfect for exploring the city at your own pace.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Although Las Vegas's desert climate doesn't make wandering particularly pleasant, many of the Strip's hotels are connected via airconditioned walkways, and there's even a free tram service connecting the Bellagio, Vdara, Park MGM and ARIA hotels, plus two more connecting the Mirage, Luxor, Excalibur, Treasure Island and Mandalay Bay hotels. There are also the Deuce (paid) and Downtown Loop (free) bus services, connecting cultural attractions in Vegas's downtown to the glitz and glamor of the Strip.

Aspen, Colorado

This picturesque mountain town might be better known as a ski resort, but it attracts year-round visitors for hikes through lush summer meadows and leaf-peeping in fall. It's all easily done without wheels as its downtown area is extremely compact, and  free local shuttles connect the city center with nearby neighborhoods and recreational areas. Numerous hiking and biking trails stretch out from Aspen into the wilderness, while Maroon Bells, one of the most photographed mountain ranges in North America, can be accessed via a short shuttle ride . 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Whether you're looking to immerse yourself in American history, explore culinary delights or visit cultural institutions, Philadelphia is perfect for a weekend break. Hire an Indego bike and see the city from one of its many bike lanes, or explore the small area that houses Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Philadelphia Museum of Art on foot. Finish up by walking the Schuylkill River Trail – a scenic pathway that stretches along the Schuylkill River and offers glorious views over the city's skyline.

Washington DC

The nation's capital and its many attractions likely need no introduction. From the Smithsonian Museums to the trendy streets of Dupont Circle, there's plenty to see and do in DC, and bike sharing schemes and 'Circulator' bus routes make exploring the sprawling city a lot easier. DC is also a much greener city than many would expect, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to amp up your step count.

Charleston, South Carolina

Famous for its horse-drawn carriages, Charleston is perfect for a car-free weekend. Its historic downtown is incredibly compact and must-see landmarks like Rainbow Row (a line of vibrantly colored historic houses) are pedestrian-friendly. There's also a free downtown trolley service that connects key points of interest, and there are plenty of bike rental shops that can help you make the most of Charleston's tree-lined streets, waterfront parks and beaches. While here, don't miss out on a carriage ride or a free walking tour  to learn more about the history of South Carolina's largest city.

Nashville, Tennessee

Trade in four wheels for two to explore the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Broadway and the city's many honky-tonk bars. Nashville has made significant efforts to become a cycle-friendly city in recent years, with dedicated bike lanes and paths as well as a bike-sharing program called BCycle. Looking to explore beyond the city limits? MTA operates the Music City Star (officially the WeGo Star), a commuter train that connects downtown Nashville with many neighboring communities.

Key West, Florida

Granted, to get to Key West you'll probably need a car (although there are Greyhound services from Miami and Orlando), but once there you won't need to worry about having a set of wheels. Duval Street, the heart of Key West, is extremely walkable and the city itself, located on an island, measures around two by four miles (3.2km by 6.4km). If you don't fancy walking everywhere, there's a free Duval Loop bus service that operates along all the key stops, but you probably won't want to be on land anyway. Key West is renowned for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as kayaking and sunset cruises.

San Francisco, California

Although you might do more hiking than walking in San Francisco due to its steep streets and hills, it's still a great city to see on foot or by bike. It's best here to explore the walkable neighborhoods one at a time, and then use the city's impressive public transport network to travel between them. Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, Chinatown and the Mission District all make for an excellent stroll. Although conquering the up-and-down city is a challenge on two wheels, the city's bike-sharing schemes are great for exploring the Golden Gate Bridge and the adjacent Golden Gate Park.

Seattle, Washington

For a city of such size the bike-friendly Seattle is surprisingly welcoming to car-free travelers. Many of the city's top attractions, including Pike Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum and the skyline-piercing Space Needle are within easy walking distance of one another. There's also a reliable and extensive public transport network including buses, light rail and streetcars. A visit to Seattle is also not complete without a scenic ferry ride in Puget Sound or a harbor cruise.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

One of the most bike-friendly cities in the US, it's easy to get around Minneapolis on a rented bike – there's a vast network of dedicated cycle lanes and many bike shops offering short-term rentals. Once you've explored the pedestrian-friendly attractions in downtown, including Mill City Museum, the Guthrie Theater and the Sculpture Garden, hop on the light rail connecting the heart of the city to America's most impressive shopping destination, the Mall of America. Home to three professional sports teams, covering MLB, NBA and NFL, you shouldn't miss out on a classic American game-day experience either.

New Orleans, Louisiana

It is actively advised to leave your car behind when exploring  the Big Easy , and make the most of the city's famous streetcar system. It connects key areas like the Riverfront and the French Quarter, while the St Charles Avenue Streetcar in particular provides a scenic, tree-lined trip past stunning historic mansions. Beyond the streetcars, the RTA's Jazzy Pass gives visitors unlimited access to the city's public transport, while numerous bike paths stretch along the Mississippi River and through City Park. Don't miss out on a riverboat cruise either for a shifting panorama of the city skyline.

San Antonio, Texas

One of San Antonio's key attractions is called the River Walk, so you know you can expect a pedestrian-friendly weekend here. This must-visit stretch is the beating heart of the city, with restaurants, shops and riverboat cruises which sail down the San Antonio River. The walkable downtown also offers up plenty of intriguing sights, perhaps the most famous being the Alamo, a symbol of Texas and a reminder of the area's rich history. Other neighborhoods, within easy reach thanks to a reliable public transport system, continue to spin the thread of the state's history, from Mission San Jose to the King William Historic District.

Portland, Oregon

Oregon's Portland is renowned for its sustainability commitments, and its extensive public transport network, bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly streets all play a part. Start your exploration with a visit to Powell's City of Books, a hotspot for literature lovers that spans an entire city block, before journeying to nearby attractions like the Portland Art Museum and the Pearl District. Make sure to visit the Portland Saturday Market too, widely recognized as the largest continuously operating open-air arts and crafts market in the US. Once you've scratched the cultural itch, quench your thirst with a visit to one of the city's many highly regarded craft breweries.

Denver, Colorado

Boasting a rich cultural scene with attractions to spare, Denver is perfectly placed for weekend breaks, especially for car-less travelers. The 16th Street Mall is a mile-long pedestrian-friendly promenade through the heart of downtown, lined with more than 250 stores, restaurants and bars. Alternatively, hire bikes from BCycle and strike out into the suburbs, or take in the city's leafy parks along the Cherry Creek Trail and the South Platte River Trail.

I've been to all 50 states. Here are the 10 I think everyone should visit at least once.

• Over the past decade, I've traveled solo to all 50 US states and most major US national parks.
• Although I've found beauty in every state, there are some that I want to visit over and over again.
• I love traveling to places like New Mexico, Montana, New Hampshire, and Arizona.

Over the past decade, I've successfully visited all 50 US states solo. I've even made it to most of the major US national parks along the way. Because of this journey, I'm often asked which states I'd recommend to travelers.

Although most international travelers gravitate toward states like Florida and New York , I've found fantastic beauty and history in every state.

However, these are the 10 states I always return to.

New Mexico boasts a surprising variety of stunning landscapes.

New Mexico is always at the top of my list when recommending US states. Nicknamed " the land of enchantment ," it lives up to its moniker — and then some.

Those who haven't visited New Mexico may think of the state as a mostly barren desert, but it's actually the diverse landscapes that keep me coming back.

From the otherworldly dunes of White Sands National Park to the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains, there's beauty to be found around every corner.

Outside the natural beauty, the state is chock full of history, art, food, wine, and culture.

Montana is a must-visit state for any outdoor enthusiast.

With its vast open spaces, majestic mountains, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, Montana is a must-visit state for any outdoor enthusiast.

The state is home to the breathtaking Glacier National Park and parts of Yellowstone National Park . The sky is vast and open, the mountains are towering, and the lack of development makes me feel like I'm entering another world entirely.

California is full of diverse landscapes and experiences.

Every time I visit California , I feel like I'm entering a completely different reality.

The sheer size and diversity of the state are impressive, and it has gorgeous beaches, cities, forests, deserts, mountains, and even volcanoes.

I love road-tripping up the coast, visiting Yosemite National Park, taking a boat to the Channel Islands, and wine tasting in places like Napa and Sonoma.

There's no place quite like the Maine coast.

There's so much to love about Maine, but my favorite part of the state is the coast. With jagged and dramatic cliffs, lighthouses, and lobster shacks, visiting the Maine coast is an unforgettable experience.

It's easy to find peace in the state that sees the first sunrise of the year and is home to Acadia National Park, which is one of the country's most popular national parks.

I love to road trip up the coast, stopping in beautiful towns like Kennebunkport, Bar Harbour, and Lubec.

I've returned to West Virginia multiple times.

While it may not get as much attention as some of the other states on this list, I've returned to West Virginia multiple times since my first visit.

The state's natural beauty is stunning, from New River Gorge National Park to ample lush forests, underground caverns, historic small towns, and over 200 waterfalls .

Wisconsin is home to beautiful scenery and great dining options.

Wisconsin has so much more than first meets the eye, from the natural beauty of the Apostle Islands and the 15,000 lakes in the state to the classic cheese curds, breweries, and wineries that dot the landscape.

I love spending time along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, dining at one of the state's famous supper clubs, and exploring the many Wisconsin state parks.

As my home state, Colorado will always hold a special place in my heart.

I couldn't write a list like this without including my home state of Colorado. The state has so much to offer, from beautiful views to fun activities.

On the Front Range, I enjoy hiking in Boulder and exploring Cheyenne Cañon. I like to spend the night at the The Broadmoor hotel in Colorado Springs before heading over to Great Sand Dunes National Park.

In the Rockies, I love driving Independence Pass to Aspen, as well as exploring the underrated Grand Mesa, which is the biggest flat-top mountain in the world . I also enjoy taking road trips to the charming mountain towns of Telluride, Buena Vista, and Steamboat Springs.

No matter where you find yourself in Colorado, there's no shortage of incredible natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Utah is home to five major national parks.

Utah is a state that you have to see to believe. With five major national parks, 46 state parks, 15 ski resorts, and hidden gems at every turn — you'll never get bored here.

I love visiting Moab to hike in Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park before heading south to Bryce Canyon National Park, Kodachrome Basin State Park, and Zion National Park .

I also love making stops in Park City and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

New Hampshire boasts some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast.

The Northeast is famous for fall foliage, but I can't help but think that New Hampshire is sometimes overshadowed by its neighbors, Maine and Vermont.

I was stunned by its natural beauty during my first trip to the state. From the White Mountains to Franconia Notch State Park, the state boasts some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast.

Arizona is the perfect escape for adventure and relaxation.

Arizona is well known for the Grand Canyon, but the state has much more to offer. From Flagstaff's high-altitude forests to Sedona's iconic red rocks, Arizona's diversity is surprising and worth a trip.

I love hiking among the cacti in Sedona or Scottsdale before heading to one of the many resorts to jump in a pool or hit the spa — the perfect escape for adventure and relaxation.

These are the 10 best places in the U.S. to raise a family—California didn't make the top 10

If you're looking for the best place in the U.S. to raise your family, consider moving to Illinois or Pennsylvania.

Both states contain several towns that ranked highly on a recent report from Niche assessing the nation's top family-friendly locales. The two states combined were home to seven of the top 10 places to raise a family in America.

To rank each location in terms of how much it would appeal to a family, the platform used data from the U.S. Census, Department of Education and FBI. It assessed factors including the quality of public schools in the area, cost of living, family amenities such as parks, libraries and cultural activities as well as walkability.

Other factors taken into account include:

• Crime rates
• Ethnic, generational and economic diversity
• Percentage of households with children
• Percentage of residents age 17 and under

Chesterbrook, Penn. took the top spot on Niche's list, thanks in part to the Philadelphia suburb's highly-rated public school system.

It has been one of Niche's best places to live in the U.S. for several years. Niche gave it almost all A's across the board in categories like housing, nightlife, diversity and family amenities.

The median listing home price in Chesterbrook was $355,000 in February 2024, trending down 4% year over year, according to Realtor.com . The median rent for an apartment in the suburb is $2,173, with the average size being around 950 sq. ft., according to RentCafe .

Long Grove, ranked as the No. 2 best place to raise a family, according to Niche.

The Chicago suburb scored A's in categories like public schools, housing, and being good for families. It got a B in nightlife and a B- in diversity.

"Living in Long Grove offers residents a rural feel, and most residents own their homes," the report reads.

The suburb is northwest of Chicago, about an hour from downtown, and known for its historic charm.

Long Grove has strict building ordinances to preserve its look, including rules about its sidewalks, fences and residential street lights.

The town's website says Long Grove is "designed with a philosophy of preserving nature."

Long Grove's average home value is $808,847, up 7.9% over the past year, according to Zillow .

2 Ohio cities among Top 50 Best Places to Live in U.S., according to Money.com

The famous Yellow Spring -- located within Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yellow Springs is one of two Ohio cities, along with Cincinnati, that made Money.com's Top 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. 2024 list, which was released Monday.

Two cities in Ohio are among the best in the United States to live in, according to a new report from Money.com.

Both Cincinnati and Yellow Springs, Ohio, are among Money.com’s Top 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. 2024 list, which was released Monday. The list “celebrates cities and towns where a thriving economy meets affordability, diversity and an exceptional quality of life.”

Money.com compiled its Best Places to Live in the U.S. list based on a range of metrics, including average housing costs, quality of public schools, percentage of residents in poverty, health of the local job market and more. The 50 cities were grouped into five categories: Culture hubs, hidden gems, new boomtowns, not just college towns and suburbs with a soul. Cincinnati was grouped into the culture hub category, while Yellow Springs fell under the category of suburbs with a soul.

Three Ohio cities make Top 50 Best College Towns in America list

Cincinnati, with a population of 309,513, boasts a median home listing price of $259,900 – well below the U.S. median of $415,500, according to Realtor.com – and has an unemployment rate of 2.8%, below the national average of 3.9%.

“The development of Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood is one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in America,” Money.com writes in its report.

“The redevelopment of OTR is just one small part of Cincinnati’s visionary city planning , which is based on the concept of ‘modernization without suburbanization’ and has steered revitalization efforts in a rust belt town that recently snapped a six-decade streak of population loss. Nationally-ranked hospitals and universities, Fortune 500 companies like Kroger and Procter & Gamble, relatively low taxes and affordable home prices only add to the city’s cachet.”

Yellow Springs, with a much smaller population of 3,697, has a much higher median home listing price of $434,500, but a similar unemployment rate at 2.7%. Located about 30 minutes northeast of Dayton, the town of Yellow Springs has a “commitment to inclusivity” and “is a great place to raise a family,” according to Money.com.

The town is awash with natural beauty, too, thanks to a smattering of local parks, bike trails and a 1,000-acre nature preserve located right next door.”

Yellow Springs was also one of two Ohio towns, along with Cleveland, named to Forbes Advisor’s Top 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024 list , which was released in February.

 We’re down to less than a week until the total solar eclipse of 2024 . Unless you’ve been in a coma for the last few months, you are bound to have heard about the biggest celestial thing to hit North Texas since the cast of Dallas came to town. The big question on everyone’s mind in our neck of the woods is where to watch this once-in-a-lifetime solar happening.

Sure, you could just walk out into your front yard and look up (with your certified eclipse glasses, of course), but an event this big deserves to be celebrated big. With that in mind, we’ve created a Watch Party Super List featuring of some of the best parties and gathering places to catch the eclipse in the North Texas area.

Here are just a few highlights.

THE SUN, THE MOON AND YOU: TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE VIEWING AT THE COTTON BOWL Where: Cotton Bowl Stadium at Fair Park – 3750 The Midway, Dallas When: April 8, doors open at 8:30 a.m., the event starts at 9:30 a.m. Cost: Free, but you must register for tickets

This event at Cotton Bowl Stadium features astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, along with PBS series Ready, Jet, Go! Additional experts from NOAA, NSF, and NASA talk about the eclipse, space weather, and why we study the sun. The actual eclipse doesn't happen until around 12:30 p.m. but gates open at 8:30 a.m., so come early and visit booths and exhibits, which include hands-on activities and take-home giveaways from various STEM organizations. Solar eclipse glasses are provided and food is available for purchase. 

SOLAR-BRATION AT UTA Where: UT Arlington Planetarium Mall, 700 Planetarium Place, Arlington When: April 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: Free

Join the UTA campus in watching and celebrating the total eclipse on Monday, April 8. There are several events and activities planned leading up to the big event including the special presentation, "Total Eclipse of the Heart: How Solar Eclipses struck fear and wonder into the hearts of people for thousands of years" and an exhibition featuring over 500 years of eclipse history from Special Collections.  

SOLAR ECLIPSE WATCH PARTY AT MEOW WOLF Where : Meow Wolf – 3000 Grapevine Mills Pkwy, Suite 253, Grapevine When: April 8, noon to 3 p.m. Cost: $25-$50

Spend the day (and the temporary night) with the interdimensional beings at Meow Wolf. From noon to 3 p.m., step outside, grab a pair of protective eclipse glasses, and watch this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. Guests can also take part in activities like cyanotype paper crafting sessions, shadow puppetry, and space-age face painting. The party also includes galactic-themed food and beverages.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Where to See the Solar Eclipse: The 15 Best Cities to Watch the Event

If you’re a fan of astronomy or otherwise interested in unique natural phenomenons, you may be wondering where to see the solar eclipse today—or if the big event will be visible from your home. Today, a number of cities throughout Mexico , the United States, and Canada will experience brief moments of dawn- or dusk-like darkness right in the middle of the day. Officially described as a total solar eclipse, the occurrence happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and blocks the entirety of sun’s face.

Because it’s not something that happens everyday, the marvel has been prompting locals and travelers alike to scope out the best viewing locations, but fear not if you don’t have your spot figured out yet. Todays’s eclipse will travel along a wide, densely populated path. NASA estimated that 31.6 million people live in an area that will see the total solar eclipse and another 150 million are within 200 miles of it. What’s more, there won’t be another total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044, according to NASA , making it all the more important to catch this one.

For most of the United States, the eclipse won’t happen until the afternoon, meaning there’s still time to figure out how you’ll watch it. Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the upcoming event, including the 13 best cities to see the eclipse.

What is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

How do you safely watch the total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How long will the 2024 solar eclipse last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

How to read maps showing the 2024 solar eclipse

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where to see the solar eclipse

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mazatlán, Mexico

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreón, Mexico

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for 4 minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Texas Hill Country

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Dallas, Texas

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is among the most densely populated places from which the eclipse will be visible. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 51 seconds and begin at 1:40 p.m. The city has put together a list of ideal places within the city to watch the event, including the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Museum of Art, and White Rock Lake Park.

Russellville, Arkansas

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience 4 minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale, Illinois

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience 4 minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Bloomington, Indiana

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m.

Indianapolis, Indiana

They don’t call Indianapolis the crossroads of America for no reason: The state capital is at the intersection of four major US highways, Interstate 65, Interstate 69, Interstate 70, and Interstate 74. This means it’s a relatively accessible location for those in surrounding areas and among the best places to travel to for the solar eclipse. Here, totality will last for about 3 minutes and 47 seconds and start at 3:06 p.m. NASA is hosting an event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will have experts on-hand to answer all questions about the eclipse. The city has also suggested White River State Park as an ideal solar eclipse viewing location, where a number of food trucks, local vendors, and other activations will be set up.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m., which will last for just under 4 minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for 3 minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York, will see 3 minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Region, Ontario

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Burlington, Vermont

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience 3 minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton, Maine

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

How will weather impact visibility?

Geographically, the cities listed above represent the best places to see the 2024 solar. However, weather will play a major role in just how well those on the ground will be able to see the phenomenon. It goes without saying that cloudy conditions or rain will impact visibility and make it harder to see the eclipse. Currently, meteorologist are forecasting worse conditions in the south-central United States, which could affect those in Texas and Arkansas. Those in the Midwest and northeast have better odds, where conditions are presently forecasted to be sunny and with clear skies.

What will I see during the solar eclipse if my city isn’t along the path of totality?

Though not every city will see a total solar eclipse, most of the United States will see at least a partial eclipse. For example, as NASA’s map shows, Seattle, which is one of the furthest metropolises from the eclipse’s path will still see about 20% of the sun covered by the moon. Here, peak coverage will happen around 11:29 a.m. On the south side of the country, Miami, which is also quite far from the eclipse’s path, will see 46.2% of the sun covered around 3:01 p.m.

On the other hand, cities which are not along the path of totality but are very close will see a greater percentage of the sun covered. St. Louis, for example, which is just outside the path of totality, will see the moon covering 99.1% of the sun during peak totality, which will happen at 2 p.m. For detailed information about your city, see NASA’s interactive eclipse map .

Can I watch the 2024 solar eclipse virtually?

If you won’t be within the path of totality, a number of organizations are live streaming the monumental event (This may also come in handy if a city experiences cloudy weather or rain on eclipse day). To start, NASA is offering live broadcasts in both English and Spanish and live streams from telescopes that will capture the eclipse as it moves across the country. Scientific American will capture the event with jets that have been converted into flying telescopes to chase the eclipse, offering a view that one simply can’t find on the ground.

ABC News and National Geographic are also teaming up to produce “Eclipse Across America,” a live special hosted by David Muir and Linsey Davis. Coverage starts at 2:00 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+, Hulu and Network Social Media Platforms and will broadcast from 10 cities along the path of totality, including Mazatlán, Mexico; Russelville, Arkansas; and Houlton, Maine.

Full hotels, emergency plans: Cities along eclipse path brace for chaos

Tens of thousands of stargazers will crowd downtown Dallas to witness April's total solar eclipse . Campground lodging and local hotels are nearly sold out in Erie, Pennsylvania. Indianapolis is hosting one of the largest watch parties in the nation alongside the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

And many hotel rooms and vacation rentals on the path are either sold out or listed at sky-high prices.

City officials along the eclipse's path of totality – a narrow stretch of land across the U.S. where people could see the moon block the sun's surface – are counting down the days until visitors flock to their towns and jam roads to see the rare natural phenomenon, they told USA TODAY.

Several city officials told USA TODAY that they've been planning for years for the massive crowds that are set to descend on the towns. And they're anticipating a chaotic weekend.

"We're expecting thousands and thousands of visitors on the shores of Lake Erie – between 56,000 and 200,000 visitors – which is an unprecedented amount," said Robert Lee, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania town.

Officials in Erie are even encouraging people to stay a few extra days after the eclipse to avoid gridlock traffic .

People who visit places along the path of totality could see the moon block the face of the sun, if the sky is clear . Visitors can expect crowded watch parties, congested roads and public safety officials to be present.

Why it's so interesting: What's the big deal about the April 2024 total solar eclipse?

Hotels, rentals: 'Gearing up to welcome the influx of sky gazers'

Hotels, short-term vacation rentals and campgrounds along the path of totality are expensive and selling quickly.

"We’ve never heard of anything like this where there are people coming in from all over the country. This is pretty unique – Hotels are almost sold out," said Shalissa Perry, the chief marketing officer for Downtown Dallas.

The packed hotels are especially unique because it's rare for rooms to sell out on Sunday and Monday evenings, said Chris Gahl, the executive vice president of Visit Indy.

"The event is on Monday and it allows for hotels to fill up on Sunday night and Monday night which is great from an economic standpoint," he said.

Short-term vacation rentals are seeing a spike in both renters and lodgers. Data from the vacation rental company Airbnb shows rentals in Austin, Dallas, Indianapolis and Montreal are filling up the fastest in the U.S.

"North American cities lying in the path of totality are gearing up to welcome the influx of sky gazers," reads a recent news release from the company.

Massive crowds make for massive traffic jams, and city officials said they've been working for years to help ease the coming gridlock.

Many town officials on the path of totality consulted city leaders who were on the path of totality during the 2017 total eclipse to inform their planning for this year's event, they told USA TODAY.

"We have been researching, studying and planning for the total solar eclipse for the last two years," Gahl said.

Travelers to the eclipse's path of totality can especially expect hours of traffic after the spectacle in the sky concludes. Many people will be trying to exit at once, according to an analysis of the 2017 solar eclipse from Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication.

Congestion during the last solar eclipse on big interstates and rural backroads lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to the analysis. The analysis's author Jonathan Upchurch said most sky gazers traveled to the path of totality by car.

Transportation departments in several states are warning people about road safety precautions ahead of the event. Texas state officials, for example,  are warning drivers  to be alert for a slew of pedestrians on the roads and telling drivers they should not wear eclipse glasses , which block out most light, while driving.

"There will be a lot of people coming in from different areas," said Travis Houston, an interim director for Dallas's Office of Emergency Management team. Dallas police and fire departments are also prepared for emergencies or crime that could come with the large crowds, Houston said.

People who live on the path of totality can sky gaze from their backyards to avoid traffic and driving hazards, Houston said.
