5 Years Ago: Glenn Frey Plays His Last Show With Eagles
Although no one knew it at the time, the two-year History of the Eagles tour served as a farewell trek for co-founder Glenn Frey , who played his last public show with the group on July 29, 2015, in Bossier City, La.
The tour, which shared a name with the band's official documentary , started July 6, 2013, in Louisville, Ky. By delving into their extensive catalog of tunes, the career-spanning performances gave Eagles a chance to reflect upon on their journey from backup band to multi-platinum artists.
After reuniting in the early '90s, the group released only one full-length collection of new material, the 2007 double LP Long Road Out of Eden , so its concerts tended to be fairly focused on the greatest hits, regardless of whatever tour Eagles happened to be on. But the History of the Eagles trek was an even more deliberately retrospective affair, offering fans a lengthy sampling of songs and stories spanning their first 20 years.
To that end, the band adopted a different stage presentation for the tour, starting the sets with Frey and Don Henley on a pair of stools for acoustic versions of the early songs "Saturday Night" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning" — the latter featuring lead vocals by former member Bernie Leadon, who rejoined for the tour. Slowly joined by the remaining Eagles, the co-founders delivered a set that usually included a pair of encores and nearly 30 songs.
The extensive trek ran for more than 140 dates and included stops in 12 countries. Over two sets, two encores and 27 songs, the Eagles celebrated their long legacy in what would be their final public performance with Frey. (You can see the set list for the show below.) Two days later, the group would assemble for a private show at a St. Louis-area high school. The short set was part of a birthday celebration for a private donor, with only 300 fans in attendance.
And then it was over. Frey died on Jan. 18, 2016 , following battles with rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. “The guy played through pain for several years,” Henley recalled of Frey during a 2018 interview. “He hid it very well. I could see it in his fingers. His rheumatoid arthritis made his fingers swollen and bent. It was difficult for him many years. But like an old football player, he would get himself taped up and go out there on the field and play the game, so he hid it very well. But he was very uncomfortable for a long time.”
Even though Henley admitted the band was "breaking up from the day the Eagles got together," he never envisioned his final moments onstage with Frey playing out the way they did. "When that tour ended, we just thought we would take a two- or three-month break, then we would probably tour some more the following year. Then the tragedy happened in October. That’s really when Glenn fell ill. That’s when the pneumonia struck. So, you never know what’s going to happen in this life. It’s full of unexpected events.”
Frey's life and legacy was celebrated at the 2016 Grammy Awards, when the remaining Eagles members joined Jackson Browne for an emotional rendition of "Take It Easy." At that time, Henley declared the Eagles were done , calling the Grammy performance their "final farewell."
But, as Henley himself admitted, life it full of unexpected events. Despite initial trepidation , Eagles decided to press forward without Frey, filling the void by bringing in Frey's son , Deacon, in 2017.
“The only way it felt justified to me was to have family blood in the band,” Henley explained to Rolling Stone in 2017. “And I have to hand it to Deacon. He had done some gigs with his father – private parties, in front of maybe 200 people. To go from that to 50,000 people is extraordinary. I don’t know many people who could have done that without freaking out.”
Country singer Vince Gill was also brought into the group, helping Eagles continue in the wake of their co-founder's death. Ever resilient, the band launched a North American tour in 2018, followed by performances in Europe and Australia in 2019. A 2020 residence in Las Vegas had been planned before the coronavirus pandemic brought live music to a halt.
Even as Eagles push forward, their fallen bandmate remains close to their hearts. “Glenn was the one who started it all,” Henley noted . “It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But I will be grateful every day that he was in my life.”

‘History of the Eagles’ tour rolls back the clock at Royal Farms Arena
“The History of the Eagles” tour, which recently flew into Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena, lived up to its name, as the band took the soldout crowd on a journey beginning with the band’s humble beginnings 44 years ago to the present.
The show, which spanned 27 songs and nearly than three and a half hours, took the crowd on a walk through time, opening with founders Don Henley and Glenn Frey sitting next to each other on stools, playing “Saturday Night” with their acoustic guitars.
Guitarist/banjo player Bernie Leadon, bassist Timothy B. Schmidt and lead guitarist Joe Walsh all joined the stage in ensuing songs, making the group whole – or at least as whole as it has been since it fired Don Felder in 2001 and bassit Randy Meisner quit in 1977 due to health reasons. It’s unclear if the absence of Felder, who wrote the guitar music for Hotel California, which blossomed into one of the most recognizable songs of all time, impacted the show. Veteran studio guitarist Steuart Smith played Felder’s solos as he has been doing for the past several shows – and even co-wrote some of the music on “East of Eden,” album.
Would Felder’s energy have added to a performance in which Henley, Frey, Schmidt, Walsh and Leadon did a lot of playing while standing still? Would Felder have said something derogatory about Henley and Frey like he did years ago, ultimately landing the sides in court and nearly a fist fight on stage.
We’ll never know. But we know this: the crowd, which was as white and as old as a Tea Party rally, never chanted his name as they watched Frey and Henley turn back the clock for one more stroll down memory lane.
The Eagles’ first set exemplified their more mellow, early-1970s days, which was highlighted by “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Witchy Woman,” “Doolin-Dalton,” “Already Gone” and the band’s first No. 1 hit, “The Best of My Love.”
The crowd rarely stood during any of the first set. The Eagles were the Eagles. Relying on a steady diet of vocal harmonies, 12-string acoustic guitars that defined their signature sound, the band kept the stage show minimal. There were no lasers or explosions, just the same red, blue and yellow lights the children of the 70s grew up looking at roller rinks.
Even the video screen that served as a backdrop to the stage was bland, spending more time showing pictures of farmland than vintage footage of the band that’s sold more than 150 million albums and cranked out five No. 1 albums.
The “History of the Eagles” was taught more like a class than a concert during the set, which featured band members telling funny stories and playing songs as the crowd sang along to hits like “Lyin’ Eyes,” “One of These Nights” and “Take it to the Limit,” without the piercing high notes that Meisner provided for his signature song.
The band took an intermission “to go to the bathroom,” Frey said.
They returned a different band.
In the same manner that their clean and quietly polished style needed a retooling in the late 70s, the second set brought out the band’s grittier side, thanks to a heavy dose of Walsh. The legendary loose cannon, party animal, tongue-in-cheek presidential candidate who joined the band in 1975 took control of the set with his distinctly nasal vocals on “Pretty Maids All In a Row” and “In The City”
The peal of his slide guitar solos and voice-enhanced wah wah chords brought the fans to their feet for a hard-rocking show.
Walsh had the distinction of being the only member to perform any of his prior band material during the show, cutting loose on “Life’s Been Good,” perhaps the best song of the night. He also pulled out a couple of James Gang classics “Funk 49” which was preceded by a comical trading of guitar riffs with Frey, and “Rocky Mountain Way” that found its way into the band’s second encore.
The band played their biggest hit “Hotel California” as a first encore, then after a brief departure, played “Take it Easy,” “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Desperado.”
When it was over, the men held hands and took a bow, as the crowd roared their gratitude for making everyone feel young again, even for just one night.

REVIEW: Eagles, Melbourne, February 22, 2015
by Paul Cashmere on February 23, 2015
in Live , News
The History of the Eagles is a completely different experience for fans who saw the last two tours.
I had always considered Eagles a band with two phases, pre-Joe Walsh and post-Joe Walsh, but the show made me aware of a middle section I wasn’t quite thinking off…the Bill Syzmczyk factor.
A little history … The Eagles original band of Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner created the first two albums ‘Eagles’ (1972) and ‘Desperado’ (1973). In 1974, the band expanded to a five piece with the addition of Don Felder on two tracks of ‘On The Border’ before he became a fully-fledged member for the next record ‘One Of These Night’ (1975). While Meisner’s contribution was acknowledged in the show, the Felder name went unspoken despite his contribution to one of the band’s most famous songs ‘Hotel California’ suggesting the Frey/Felder feud (as portrayed in the History of the Eagles DVD documentary) continues.
Leadon left after the fourth record ‘One Of These Nights’ and was replaced by Joe Walsh for the next album ‘Hotel California’ (1976). It became the Eagles masterpiece and the potent ‘Life In The Fast Lane’, one of the finest pieces of rock in the 70s, is perfectly placed to end the second set.
Randy Meisner left after ‘Hotel California’ and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit. Schmit performed on ‘The Long Run’, the band’s final album of the original era, then they broke up for a 15-year hiatus. “It wasn’t funny at the time,” he said at last night’s show. It did generate one of the band’s best-known ballads ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’, Timothy’s finest contribution to the band.
Bernie Leadon’s addition to this line-up makes this show special. This tour is his first time as an Eagle with Schmit and Walsh so fans are also being treated to a unique combination. After the show starts with just Henley and Frey performing an early Eagles song ‘Saturday Night’, Leadon comes on to sing ‘Train Leaves Here This Morning’, a song he wrote in 1968 with Gene Clark from The Byrds for their album ‘The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark’. It is the oldest song in this set effectively making it ‘The Big Bang Theory’ of the Eagles current set.
The History of the Eagles is mostly a chronological musical journey with set one dedicated to the first four albums and set two to final years of ‘Hotel California’ and ‘The Long Run’. This was the Joe Walsh, Timothy B Schmit era for the band and Joe and Timothy collectively take up six songs in the set.
Part two starts with Joe’s ‘Hotel California’ ballad ‘Pretty Maids All In A Row’ but during this section we are also treated to his epic ‘Life’s Been Good’, from his solo record ‘But Seriously Folks’. The song was kind of an Eagles song anyway. Frey, Henley and Randy Meisner all sang on the studio version. Joe’s helmet-cam comes out once again for this one. The helmet-cam was introduced for the Farewell 1 tour of 2004 and kept in the show ever since.
Bernie returns for the final encore featuring their first hit ‘Take It Easy’, Joe’s solo ‘Ricky Mountain Way’ and Don’s outstanding showcase number ‘Desperado’.
The History of the Eagles is a totally different experience to the previous Australian tours of 2004 and 2010. This is one show the fans will appreciate for both its musical excellence and informative background.
I did miss Glenn’s jokes. “my first wife Plaintiff” and “the credit card” lines will just have to be resurrected for the next tour.

The Last Show Of Glenn Frey With Eagles – Watch
History of the Eagles tour, 2015 - Front Row Rock / Youtube
No one could ever have prepared Eagles fans what was to be founding member Glenn Frey’s final show with the band. This was during the 2-year History of the Eagles tour, where Frey played his final public appearance with the band on July 29, 2015, in Bossier City, Louisiana.
The tour started on July 6, 2013, in Louisville, Kentucky which had the band dish out tracks from their extensive run in the music scene, from when they were once a backing act to becoming the main attraction on stage. The Eagles’ reunion in the early ’90s churned out a single new album in the form of 2007’s Long Road out of Eden, in which the following tours were given the greatest hits treatment for the concert setlists. In History of The Eagles, however, the band dug through rare and early cuts from the first 20 years of their career.
This meant a new concert format, starting with Frey and Don Henley doing acoustic versions of early songs while the other members slowly join them as the show progressed. This was the usual affair, featuring a pair of encores and around 30 songs performed. The tour lasted over 140 dates and had stops in 12 countries, including their final show with Frey.
The founding Eagle passed away on January 18, 2016, after an extensive struggle against rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, and ulcerative colitis. “The guy played through pain for several years. He hid it very well. I could see it in his fingers. His rheumatoid arthritis made his fingers swollen and bent. It was difficult for him many years. But like an old football player, he would get himself taped up and go out there on the field and play the game, so he hid it very well. But he was very uncomfortable for a long time,” Henley said of Frey in a 2018 interview.
Henley knew that the band was destined to break up from the day they got together, but he didn’t anticipate how Frey would exit the scene the way things played out. “When that tour ended, we just thought we would take a two- or three-month break, then we would probably tour some more the following year. Then the tragedy happened in October. That’s really when Glenn fell ill. That’s when the pneumonia struck. So, you never know what’s going to happen in this life. It’s full of unexpected events,” he said.
The band supposedly called it quits after the 2016 Grammys, but went back on the road and brought in Frey’s son, Deacon, to stand in his place. “The only way it felt justified to me was to have family blood in the band. And I have to hand it to Deacon. He had done some gigs with his father – private parties, in front of maybe 200 people. To go from that to 50,000 people is extraordinary. I don’t know many people who could have done that without freaking out,” Henley shared in a 2017 Rolling Stone interview.
Henley cherishes Frey’s memories long after his departure, saying, “Glenn was the one who started it all. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But I will be grateful every day that he was in my life.”

But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle,” the band continued in its announcement, noting that the farewell run is still in the planning stages, with more dates to be announced at a later time. “We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round… The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”
For the six new dates added between Jan. 19 and March 13 next year, pre-sale starts on Wednesday, Nov. 1, and general on-sale is Friday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. local time.

Ice Cube, Jamey Johnson added to Ohio State Fair's concert lineup
Rapper-actor Ice Cube, who has appeared in more than 40 films, and country singer Jamey Johnson, who co-wrote the Trace Adkins' hit "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," are the final acts added to the concert lineup at the Ohio State Fair.
Ice Cube, who performed at the fair in 2022 , is to return at 7 p.m. July 30, with tickets costing $52 and $62. Johnson, along with special guest Southhall, appear at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 and ticket prices are $38 and $48. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com/OhioStateFair .
Those who sign up to receive the Ohio State Fair e-newsletter can get access to the Ohio State Fair presale starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday and ending at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
Ice Cube (born O'Shea Jackson) is known for his early contributions to gangsta rap's popularity, which include his brief stint as lead rapper with the controversial group N.W.A., featuring Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. A monetary dispute led to his leaving the trio in 1989 and launching a successful solo career.

The rapper turned to acting in 1991, making his debut as Doughboy in John Singleton's influential "Boyz N the Hood." Since then, the 54-year-old has appeared in such movies as the "Friday" and "Barbershop" franchises, the family comedies "Are We There Yet?" and "Are We Done Yet?" and the critically acclaimed black comedy war film "Three Kings" with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. He also has co-written, directed and produced numerous other films.
Ice Cube was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A in 2016 and his oldest son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., portrayed him in the 2015 biopic "Straight Outta Compton."
Country singer-songwriter Johnson left college and the marching band at Jacksonville State University after two years and began playing bars in the Montgomery, Alabama, area while serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. By 2000, he had relocated to Nashville to pursue music full-time.
In addition to his own releases, which include such singles as "The Dollar," which reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot Country chart, and "In Color," which peaked at No. 9, 48-year-old Johnson has co-written hits for other artists. Among them are "Give It Away," George Strait's 51st No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and two more songs for Adkins, including the No. 1 hit, "Ladies Love Country Boys."

The Eagles struck first, just 1:20 into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Perreault passed the puck to the right side to classmate Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) , who brought it into the offensive zone. Leonard then found Smith on the back side for the quick shot that tucked in just under the crossbar for his 24th goal of the season.
