Here are 8 big tours skipping Indianapolis.

taylor tours indiana

Editor's note: Taylor Swift is not skipping Indianapolis . She announced in August that she will be coming to Lucas Oil Stadium for three nights in 2024 .

Taylor Swift, fresh off a highly anticipated album release and a victory lap as the first artist in history to occupy all 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 chart , announced a U.S. stadium tour on Tuesday.

Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium was not on the list.

According to touring industry insider Pollstar , Indianapolis hosted several top-grossing tours in the first half of 2022: Elton John (currently third on the worldwide list), Morgan Wallen (fifth), Eric Church (sixth) and the Eagles (seventh).

Eras Tour: Indiana man jailed on charges of stalking and threatening Taylor Swift, concertgoers

But the big-show outlook for late 2022 and all of 2023 is beginning to look bleak, with the recent announcement of Shania Twain's planned July 15 show at Ruoff a welcome outlier. Another major test could come any day now, with Beyoncé expected to tour her latest album, Renaissance, in 2023.

While Swift is arguably the biggest name planning to skip Indy, she is not the only one.

Here are a few other anticipated tours apparently flying over Indianapolis, with the caveat that tours can and often do add cities along the way.

Taylor Swift

UPDATE: Taylor Swift is coming to Indianapolis: Everything we know so far

The freshest gut punch is also the biggest. Her sold-out 2018 Reputation Tour made a pilgrimage to the home of the Colts, but the Eras Tour as currently constructed will not.

It looks like Indy Swifties' closest option will be Cincinnati, where Muna and Gracie Abrams will open for Swift on July 1. The Midwestern portion also includes two Chicago shows (June 2-3), a Detroit stop (June 10), Minneapolis (June 24) and Kansas City (July 8). There's also a Nashville show on May 6.

The coastal swings offer top-tier opening acts, if you're willing to travel, with Haim on the West Coast, Phoebe Bridgers on the East and Paramore (!!!!) opening the tour's launch in Glendale, Arizona.

I wouldn't abandon all hope. This is not yet a yearlong mega-tour, so there may be dates added.

We were part of the initial Reputation Tour announcement in 2017, though.

Taylor Swift's 2018 tour: 4 ways Swift aced her stadium challenge in Indianapolis

Bruce Springsteen

I could go either way on this one. On the one hand, yes, he's an absolute icon. On the other, I won't have to take out a second mortgage to afford a ticket .

The Boss will visit Kansas City on Feb. 18, St. Paul on March 5, Milwaukee on March 7, Columbus on March 9, Detroit on March 29 then swing back to Ohio (and only Ohio) for a show at the other FieldHouse in Cleveland on April 5.

Rough for Indy, but also what did Chicago do? Obviously, a lot goes into the logistics of planning a tour, but I'd take that personally, Chicago.

Indianapolis concerts: Shania Twain announces Indianapolis stop on first tour in nearly five years

The 2023 North American leg of the +–=÷x Tour will visit Detroit (July 15), Nashville (July 22), Chicago (July 29), Kansas City (Aug. 5) and Minneapolis (Aug. 12) before finishing on the West Coast.

Indy was on the first North American leg of Sheeran's last tour in 2017.

I don't have a deep leaning on this. I'm sure he's great. His songs are catchy. Moving on.

Billie Eilish

This was earlier this year, but I was devastated to see Happier Than Ever, The World Tour stop in Omaha and Louisville but not Indianapolis. I crossed a lot of artists off my list this year, but Eilish's is one of the big names still left.

The tour ended in September, so this one is a clean miss.

Harry Styles

Love on Tour will end up stretching across three years and four continents. But with North American dates set to wrap up this month before Latin American, Oceanic and European legs, it looks like Indianapolis is not in the cards.

Our best shot was actually last year, when he swung through St. Paul, Detroit, Chicago and Nashville. He bopped back to Chicago last month as part of a second leg of mini-residencies in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

I'm jealous of anyone who saw him, particularly in 2022. This was his year.

Kendrick Lamar

The Big Steppers Tour was probably the biggest hip-hop tour of the year, but the North American leg came and went without an Indianapolis show. It moved through most of the larger and similar-sized Midwestern cities in August. There could always be some U.S. dates added as he returns home from Europe and Oceania at the end of this year.

IndyStar shares something with Lamar and no other artist on this list: Both have won the Pulitzer Prize in the last five years. There's some local pub quiz trivia gold for anyone who wants it.

Bad Bunny was Pollstar's highest grossing act in the first half of 2022, and it was not close. His tour reportedly earned $120.1 million, nearly $50 million more than the second-place Genesis (which also skipped Indianapolis on its Midwestern swing).

The aptly named World's Hottest Tour had one stop in the region, Soldier Field in Chicago, as it moved through many of the biggest venues in the country before starting an equally massive Latin American swing last month.

Muse/Arctic Monkeys

These two are personal lamentations — big tours, but a notch below the others on the list.

Both bands are, for my money, the best touring rock bands of the last 20 years. I've seen each three times in that span, as well as probably 200-300 other groups. They're also my favorite bands of all-time. I strive to be objective as I can in these matters, but ultimately, saying one show is better than another is largely subjective. Take all of this into account.

Arctic Monkeys announced the North American leg of their tour last month, and almost immediately added extra Minneapolis, Toronto, Nashville, Colorado and Los Angeles dates due to demand. A lot could change before it begins in August. You can't play Pine Knob Music Theatre in suburban Detroit then skip Ruoff. That has to be a rule.

I'm less optimistic that Muse could somehow fit us into the Will of the People Tour (great name, much better than just math symbols). The North American cluster begins in January, and it looks like the closest stop is Feb. 25 in Chicago.

My second son is due pretty much exactly on that date, but labor takes forever, right? A three- or four-hour drive. Yeah, I can make it.

Taylor Swift will be performing in Indiana – here's how to attend

Taylor swift is set to perform in indianapolis, but how likely are you to get tickets, by fiona hurless • published august 10, 2023 • updated on august 10, 2023 at 7:55 am.

Taylor Swift recently announced additional Eras Tour dates for U.S. and Canada – and she’s performing less than four hours from the Chicago area.

The star’s tour was set to end this past week, but will pick up in Nov. 2024 with three shows each in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis. Swift also announced six shows in Toronto a year from this fall.

Watch NBC Chicago local news and weather for free 24/7

Not only has the demand for tickets to Swift's tour broken records – it’s broken parts of Ticketmaster’s website. Over 3.5 million people pre-registered for TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan, marking the registration as the largest in history.

So how can you see Swift perform in Indiana? Similar to past shows, getting tickets to Swift's newly added shows involves a lengthy process with Ticketmaster. Although presale has closed, fans who registered still have a long road ahead of them before they can secure tickets.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

Tickets go on sale for the Indianapolis show starting Friday, and while some fans have received access codes to the sale, even more are still on the waitlist.

So what to do if you received an email? The access code does not guarantee access to tickets, but instead provides you access to join the Verified Fan Onsale where tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis.

While it's not impossible to get off the waitlist for Swift's shows, it is incredibly unlikely seeing as the shows typically sell out. The presale has officially closed, but fans will have the chance to purchase tickets for the Indiana show starting at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11.

Indianapolis stop on Taylor Swift’s Eras tour expected to boost city’s economy

I NDIANAPOLIS — Taylor Swift’s newest double album “The Tortured Poet’s Department: The Anthology” was released on Friday – causing Swifties across Central Indiana and throughout the world to dive deep into the album’s 31 new songs.

In the midst of this new music, many Swift fans are curious about how she will implement these new tracks into her iconic Eras tour, which will stop in Central Indiana later this year.

In early November, Swift will end the United States leg of her Eras tour in 2024 with three shows at Lucas Oil Stadium from Nov. 1-3. Gracie Abrams is expected to open all three shows in Indianapolis.

This comes after the record-breaking tour, which began in March 2023, crisscrossed the United States and the world, performing for millions of fans. The tour stemmed its own concert film, currently streaming on Disney+.

Ever since the Indianapolis shows were announced, Mark Mayer, a clinical associate professor at the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis for Indiana University, said that the city has been preparing for the Eras Tour as one of the biggest concert and tourism events ever seen in the history of Indianapolis.

“Like we’re talking toward that scale of the Super Bowl, which is unprecedented. Now, with the album drop, it creates even more excitement for that,” he said. “This is something that has been one of the most successful tours ever, potentially by some metrics, the most successful tour and it’s coming to Indianapolis for three nights.”

The city of Indianapolis hosted Super Bowl 46 at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2012. Officials said at the time that the event helped provide a boost to the economy and helped alter the city’s reputation.

Mayer said Indianapolis has proven itself as a prime host city, through hosting various sporting events and conventions. Three concerts on the level of the Eras Tour could bring significant direct and indirect economic impact to the city of Indianapolis, as well as central Indiana as a whole.

“You look at Indianapolis having three nights, look at some of the effects in other cities, comparable sized cities, a little bit bigger cities, we’re talking about 10’s of millions of dollars in economic impact direct and then you’ve got some indirect economic impact as well,” he said.

During normal concerts and events, statistics from the U.S. Travel Association show that for every $100 spent on tickets to an event, individuals are going to have $300 in other expenses, including hotel accommodations, food and other purchases.

But with Swift, and particularly three Eras Tour stops in Indianapolis, Mayer said it’s a whole new ballgame.

“Swiftonomics is its own term,” he said. “Taylor Swift’s tour has had an appreciable impact on the U.S. economy in the scale of billions of dollars and that’s pretty incredible,” he said. “…You’re talking tens of millions of dollars per show. We’ve got three and that’s just the direct.”

The shows also have an indirect impact on the city’s economy, having fans consider Indianapolis for other big events and concerts, and leading more people to come to Indianapolis for tourism as a whole.

Ultimately, Mayer thinks that bringing the Eras tour to Indianapolis legitimizes it in a way, making it a must-stop city for tours of this scale.

“I’m really happy for Indianapolis that this is coming here,” he said. “I think it’s just such a win for the city. I look forward to hosting another great event just like we did with the Super Bowl.”

Tickets are currently not available for sale on Swift’s website. More information can be found here .

Lawmakers set to tackle ‘funflation’ as Taylor Swift tour puts spotlight on growing entertainment costs

(CNN) - Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” which dropped on Friday, became the most-streamed album on its first day across Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music.

The superstar continues to break record after record. Last summer’s “Eras” tour was the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Swift’s live success, along with Beyonce’s blockbuster tour, jolted the entire U.S. economy, but fans willing to shell out big bucks to be a part of the magic were plagued by ticketing troubles and inflation.

“This is a significant amount of spending that people are still funneling towards entertainment and concerts,” said Elizabeth Renter, data analyst for NerdWallet.

The phenomenon of “funflation” is raising red flags in Washington.

The U.S. Justice Department is planning to sue Live Nation & Entertainment, the country’s largest concert promoter and parent company of Ticketmaster, for breaking America’s antitrust laws, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal that cited anonymous sources familiar with the DOJ’s plans.

“It’s impossible for a consumer to tell what’s going into these ticket prices,” said Kase Wickman, Vanity Fair contributor. “It’s really frustrating on the consumer side and also feels unfair.”

For its part, Ticketmaster has defended its practices, arguing before Congress last year that it doesn’t set ticket prices or determine how many seats go up for sale.

“Pricing and distribution strategies are determined by the artists and their teams. Service fees, even if they’re called ticketing fees, are retained mainly by the venues,” said Joe Berchtold, president and CFO of Live Nation & Entertainment.

Yet, despite consumer anger over exorbitant fees when buying online, the concert-going craze isn’t over.

“People have rethought how they prioritize what they spend their money on and that we’re going to see continued spending on experiences rather than just stuff,” Renter said.
