HIGHEST ALTITUDE

A lot of trekkers do the Bhrigu Lake trek for the lake is steeped in mythology. This trek lies in Himachal Pradesh, around 20 km north of Manali and can be accessed from Gulaba.

It is known as the place where the famous saint Maharishi Bhrigu sat in deep meditation. However, we believe the lake is not the only thing the trek has to offer. You must do the Bhrigu Lake trek for its  grasslands .

To enter an alpine meadow in our country, one has to often spend at least a day or two trekking within the tree line. We are talking about two or three days of hard ascent. This is because most alpine meadows start at around 11,000 ft above the treeline.

However, on this trek, you are in the meadows within the first 10 minutes of this trek! Imagine having meadows such as these right in your backyard. No wonder we go gaga over landscapes that are seen in places like Switzerland.

The meadows on the Bhrigu Lake trek stretch far and wide – almost like an endless carpet. Wild horses gallop around you. The grazing sheep look up when you come out of the treeline, almost as if to greet you.

From these grassy knolls, you will see the mountains of Pir Panjal  and  Dhauladhar  dominating the skyline.

This is your garden in the sky. In July, you'll see the meadows covered with a blanket of snow, from August to September , they will be at their lushest green. You’ll spot wildflowers everywhere.

The meadows change texture, shape, and colour but stay with you all along the trek – right until Bhrigu Lake. This is what makes the trek special. Getting a chance to be in such alpine meadows all along a trek is a rare opportunity.

This  four-day trek  gives you a good idea of what Himalayan treks offer –  meadows, glacial lakes and mountain views . Even though it is a short trek, it climbs to the daunting altitude of 14,000 ft so you experience the thrill of a climb as well.

With its easy access from Manali, it is a great trek to do for  beginners or families  looking to explore the wilderness.

Arjun Majumdar, Founder, CEO

bhrigu lake trek distance

Here is Arjun Majumdar, Founder and CEO of Indiahikes talking about the Bhrigu Lake trek. Arjun is an entrepreneur by profession and a trekker by passion, Arjun started Indiahikes in 2008 with a vision to explore and document new trails, solve problems in the mountains and implement sustainable ways of trekking.

What I Like and Don't Like About the Bhrigu Lake Trek

What I Like About the Bhirgu Lake Trek

1 . The rolling, textured grasslands of Bhrigu Lake

Here, the grasslands stretched in lovely undulating green dunes as far as the eye could see; perhaps even beyond. It was special.

I hadn’t seen something like this: the meadows changed texture and colour with every altitude gained. What started as a short, bright, but coarse carpet turned a rich, succulent green as we climbed.

At one point we stopped for a short snack break. I took off my shoes and felt the velvet touch of the immaculate lushness under my feet. The moist softness and the deeply aromatic smell still stay with me.

2 . The commanding views from Rola Kholi

I loved walking through the cauldron that is called Rola Kholi. We did not stop there and pitched our tent on a ledge jutting out from the walls of the cauldron. I could not have asked for a more commanding view of the mountains of the Pir Panjal range.

Early in the morning, I walked up the gently sloping banks around Rola Kholi. The sun lit up the grassland in bright yellowish streaks and cotton wool clouds hung in the air below me.

In front of Mt Hanuman Tibba, Ladaki Peak, and Friendship Peak, the summits of Lahaul stretched out. It was just us and the abundance of a teeming, flourishing grassland. I had underrated the trek.

3 . Reflection of mountains in Bhrigu Lake from a high point

When I climbed a bit higher over the banks of the Bhrigu lake, I saw the mountain ranges reflected on the waters of the lake. Clouds hung below us and we were almost looking at the lake as it hung out of the air. We were at 14,000 feet. I couldn’t believe we were that high!

4 . Stunning green valley on the other side

We were early to the lake, so we went beyond, towards Pandurupa. It is not too far, perhaps half an hour on the other side.

I had fallen in love with the trek, but I should have waited.

The other side was equally stunning. A wide green valley stretched below us. Green grassy mountainsides rise out of the valley and a line of forest way down below. I wish we could trek this side too. But I knew the trail was long and winding. We couldn’t camp in between. Reluctantly, we made our way back to the lake.

I had not expected much out of the Bhrigu lake trek. I didn’t think a trek right out of Manali could be so grand. I wish I was not so full of my image set. Bhrigu Lake is one of the best grassland treks that I have done in my life.

What I Don't Like About the Bhirgu Lake Trek

1 . Bhrigu Lake is less appealing

The lake didn’t appeal to me much. It was a bit of a downer after the exhilaration of the climb and the stunning scenery around.

I expected the lake to be larger, with a grassy bank around it. There wasn’t. It had a muddy bank. A few local folks were even taking a dip in its water. That killed the setting. Perhaps my overfed imagination expected too much.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Bhrigu Lake

The Story of Bhrigu Lake

bhrigu lake trek distance

Maharishi Bhrigu, who was one of the famous Saptarishis, sat and meditated beside the Bhrigu Lake.

The setting of the lake, resting between two high-altitude ridges, does seem perfect for silence and inward reflection. Moreover, from here you can see the grand Himalayan ranges too. Right in front of you, there are Pir Pinjal and Dhauladhar ranges . Also, major peaks such as  Indrasen, Deo Tibba, and Hanuman Tibba stand majestically before you.

It is believed that the sacred meditations of Maharishi Bhrigu have purified the lake and the space around it. This is a holy lake for the locals, and to protect its sanctity, camping close to the lake is prohibited.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

bhrigu lake trek distance

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

bhrigu lake trek distance

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

bhrigu lake trek distance

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

bhrigu lake trek distance

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

bhrigu lake trek distance

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

How-Bhrigu-Lake-Looks-On-Day-1

Our journey starts at Manali, on the Rohtang pass road towards the beautiful mountain hamlet of Gulaba. Gulaba is located on the way to Rohtang Pass, on the Leh-Manali Highway. Please note Transportation from Manali to Gulaba and return is not included. En route, we will pass three mountain hamlets, Kolang, Palchan, and Kothi and the route becomes more and more picturesque as we drive ahead. The Gulaba village is nestled amidst snow-capped mountains, with the Beas River flowing by, adding more opulence to its beauty. After a hearty lunch at the village, we will begin our trek to Gulaba Meadows, our camping spot for the night. It’s a short trek of about 1.5 hrs and a fairly easy trek through grasslands and forest lines.  The natural landscape of this village attracts a lot of tourists every year and  Gulaba is also popular as an adventure sports destination with opportunities for large numbers of activities like skiing, paragliding, trekking, and snow scooter riding. The views from Gulaba are nothing short of magical and utterly peaceful. From our camps in the meadow, you can witness a beautiful sunset and stargaze under the scintillating sky at night, experiencing the serenity and tranquillity of the mountains.

Gulaba to Rola Kholi

  • Altitude: Rola Kholi 3,800m/12,500ft
  • Altitude Gain: 400m/ 1350ft
  • Trek Distance:  6 km (4 hr approx.)
  • Steep ascent for first 1.5 hr of the trek followed by a gradual descent to the campsite, via Kolang Nallah
  • The trail passes through virgin forests of Silver Oak, Cedar, and Birch trees
  • Get views of Manali and Solang Valley
  • Peaks spotted: Mt. Hanuman Tibba and Seven Sister peaks
  • Hot lunch at campsite
  • Carry enough water from Gulaba Camp
  • Stay in tents.

Today we will trek from Gulaba to Rola Kholi, our next campsite, situated at an altitude of 12,500 ft. The trek distance is approximately 6 km and it takes about 3 to 4 hrs to complete the trek. The climb is going to be a little steep, so we recommend carrying enough water and light snacks so that you can energize yourself while trekking through the trail. The trek makes its way up the mountains through covers of conifers. You will walk under the shade of Pine, Oak, Birches, and Cedar for the first few miles of the trek, some prominent trees of the Himalayan region, before you catch the sight of beautiful blue mountains through the forest and a rolling meadow in front of you as the forest slowly ebbs away.

How-Bhrigu-Lake-Looks-On-Day-2

As the forest ends, and the meadows begin, you will witness a vast expanse of lush green grasslands. This is the part where the shepherds dwell with their cattle. You may spot flocks of sheep or horses galloping about or grazing in the grasslands during the summer months. Mud huts line the meadows.

As we start heading south the mighty Mt. Hanuman Tibba appears towering over the meadow with the Seven Sisters peak right below it seated in the Beas Kund Valley below.  This trek also offers a spectacular cloud experience. The clouds here are pretty dramatic as well. They keep popping up as you walk through the meadows and once you reach Rola Kholi you can observe these clouds down below.

As we move further south, we will enter into another forest cover. The trail follows a rugged terrain of meadows once again. This is the most challenging part of today’s trek as the path becomes steeper and narrower right before entering Rola Kholi. Soon, you will enter Rola Kholi, your camping spot for the night. Rola Kholi is another grazing ground at the base of the Bhrigu Lake, so you may spot cattle here as well. Chor Nallah flows by our campsite, your running source of water. Camping here is an amazing experience as at night the sky breaks into a galaxy of zillion stars.

Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake back to Rola Kholi

  • Altitude: Bhrigu Lake at 4,250m/14,000 ft
  • Trek Distance: 10 km (8 hrs approx.)
  • Start early in the morning
  • Trek along with the bhrigu Lake stream
  • Steep ascent for about 5 km till Bhrigu Lake
  • Peaks spotted: Indrasen, Deo Tibba, and Hanuman Tibba
  • Mixed terrain, rocky and snowy
  • Packed lunch provided on way and hot snacks at campsite

Today, we will trek to Bhrigu Lake and you will experience a great change in the landscape from the last two days. Starting early in the morning, we will have to cover a distance of 10 km in about 7 to 8 hours.  The trek is moderate and starts with a stony trail followed by a steep initial ascent followed by a slight descent, walk on levelled ground for a couple of minutes, and makes a final steep ascent to the lake.

How-Bhrigu-Lake-Looks-On-Day-3

While we have left the green meadows behind, the scenery unfolding in front of you is no less captivating and you begin to experience the cool mountain climate as you continue to trek up towards the Lake. Till June, the trail is usually covered with snow and in July, the snow in the lower reaches begins to melt, turning the trail to brown and green.  During the early monsoon months of Mid-July to Mid-August, the valley turns lush green due to the rains. The Lake is located between two ridges and becomes visible as we cross the last leg of our trek through large boulders. We recommend going slowly in this part and following the trek leaders instructions as the boulders are slippery and accidents happen all the time. Also, the Lake is usually covered in fog so it can be a little tricky to find the route so follow the advice of our team. On a clear day, you can spot the Pir Panjal and the Dhauladhar range from the lake and also spot major peaks like Deo Tibba, Indrasen, and Hanuman Tibba standing tall in front of you.  From the ridge surrounding the lake, you can also get a bird’s eye view of Solang Valley.

An interesting fact about the Bhrigu Lake is that it never completely freezes whether it is summer or winter and the locals attribute this phenomenon to Sage Bhrigu of the ancient times, after whom the lake is named. After spending some time at the Lake, enjoying its scenic beauty, we will retrace our steps back to Rola Kholi and spend another night at the campsite under the stars.

Rola Kholi to Gulaba trek & drive to Manali

  • OTrek Distance: 7 km ( 3 hr approx.)
  • Drive to Manali, 22 km, approx one and half hours
  • Mostly descending trek and easy grade
  • Carry 2-litre water from Rola Kholi
  • Reach Manali by 2pm to 3pm

Today’s trek is an easy one, as we make our way back from Rola Kholi campsite to Gulaba, retracing the same meadows and forests that we came up from. The descent is steep but not very difficult as you are always on the meadows. The down trek is expected to take 2 to 3 hours as you descend to the Gulaba village once again. It is one of the best grassland treks taking you up close to the alpine meadows and will leave you speechless with its beauty.

Note: There is another return route to Manali via Vashist village and Pandu Ropa from Bhrigu lake, but we find this path more sustainable and relaxing and offers a more soothing scenery. Gulaba situated at an altitude of 10,370 ft is a much better exit and less tiring for your legs as compared to Vaishist at an elevation of 7,000 ft.

How To Reach

It is essential for everyone to arrive at Manali (11:00 am).

Once you have reached the assembly point of the trek in Manali, TTH will manage the rest of your travel arrangements, if you have opted for TTH's pick-up service, you can select this option during the booking process by adding it as an add-on.

Options

1.  Take overnight bus to Manali from Delhi or Chandigarh, taking a bus from Chandigarh is the most ideal option.

-Chandigarh to Manali Bus: 10 hours.

-Delhi to Manali Bus: 14 hours is hectic and takes more time.

We always recommend going for the govt. Buses over the private ones outside the bus station as based on the experience we have found that there are very high chances of delay involved with private buses. Also, govt. Buses are always more reliable. Whichever bus you choose, just make sure to reach Manali at 10 am.

3. You can take a flight to Bhuntar Airport (but we would not recommend it because of the high prices of the flight and very high chances of cancellations), Manali is just a couple of hours away and you can easily get a bus or a private taxi till there. If you do plan to come via Bhuntar, make sure to reach at least a day before the trek starts.

4. You can even come via train, Pathankot railway station is from where you can get direct buses to Kullu/Kasol that is 300 km from there and would take an overnight journey. Even in this case, reach a day before at Manali.

If you prefer to travel independently, you can either take a government bus or book a private cab. Your trek coordinator will provide guidance on how to arrange for the bus or cab booking.

Arrive in Manali by 6:00 pm.

The designated drop-off point is Manali Gov bus stand.

Please consider planning your subsequent travel arrangements after 8:00 pm.

TTH offers comfortable transportation through Tempo Traveler, Bolero, or equivalent vehicles. If you wish to upgrade your mode of transportation, please contact your trek coordinator for further assistance.

These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Drive from Manali (2050 M) to Gulaba (3,000M)  and trek from Gulaba to Rola Kholi (3,810M)  (Click to View GPS data)

Distance: 23 kms drive + 7 kms trek

Duration: 2 hours + 6 hours

Drive from Manali to Gulaba

Manali, the populous tourist town is the starting point for many treks in Himachal Pradesh like Beas Kund, Bhrigu Lake, and Hampta Pass. Manali main bus terminus is the assembly point where all trekkers are expected to arrive before 9 AM. We will do a quick headcount and start driving towards Gulaba. The drive from Manali to Gulaba is a fascinating journey. The 23 km to Gulaba should take us 2 hours to cover.

As soon as we start from Manali, for the first 20 minutes the roads will take you through the cultural lanes of Himachali tradition. Look out for the old heritage buildings, vibrant attires of the natives, and small flea markets on the corner of the streets. We can pick up some souvenirs at the end of the trip. As we pass through the huge metallic bridges to cross the Beas river, small twinkling stars will pop up and keep us company when the sun rays reflect on the mighty Beas river.

45 minutes into the drive, the Beas River will disappear behind us and we will enter into the famous Rohtang Pass. The road will divert to our right from the Rohtang Pass and enter into the Kullu district. Lush green and golden apple trees will wave their branches to welcome us on both sides of the roads. Once we cover a distance of 15 km, our vehicle will cross through fresh cotton clouds. It will cleanse our mind, body, and soul. During the monsoon season, we can witness the monsoon clouds joining together and making doodles in the sky. Keep your eyes peeled for the valiant hosts of Gulaba – The Vultures. They patrol the sky to keep us in check.

After 21 km, we will cross a government check post. They will take a headcount, check the necessary documents and allow us to go ahead. In 2 more km, we will reach the starting point of the trail – Gulaba.

Gulaba (3,000M) to Rola Kholi (3,810M)

Distance:  7 km

Duration: 6 Hours

The trail for the Bhrigu Lake trek begins from Gulaba. We will cross the road and start walking at around 11 AM. The water source for the day is small mountain streams between every 3 km and the terrain comprises of steep ascents and no descents.

In the beginning, for the first 30 minutes, the trails will be covered with dense oak trees, pine trees, Himalayan Birch, and shrubs. The mystic woods, moist leaves, and the hums of the insects will create a groovy song to keep us entertained. We jump, move and groove with the beat. The pathway will bend and twist like a snake and lead us through some water mist created from the monsoon clouds. (White-outs are a common factor in monsoon treks)

At the end of 2 km, the forest line ends and captivating grasslands take over the landscape. The rolling meadows extend for 5 km till Rola Kholi. Usually, it takes more time and a long distance to reach any Himalayan grassland from the base point of a trek. But on the Bhrigu Lake trek, it just takes 2 km and 30 minutes.

3 kms into the journey, the first water stream appears. We can fill our bottles and settle for lunch there. To make our journey more colourful, the terrain from the lunch point is completely covered with wildflowers. If we get lucky we can find some dry Dandelion flowers. Make a wish and blow it.

The sparkling colours of the flowers on the grassland fluctuate with different shades for the next 2 km. If we stop here and look back, we get a glimpse of the stunning Solang Valley and Beas Kund Valley. Once we cover a distance of 6 km in 5 hours, the pathway gets steeper and ascends towards the high ground. After finishing 7 km in 6 hours we reach a plain land near a big mountain stream. Thais is our Campsite for the day – Rola Kholi. Rola Kholi is a natural podium to stand and observe the stars and star dust in the night and witness the magnificence of Seven Sister Peaks, Deo Tibba, Solang Valley, Hanuman Tibba, and Beas Kund Valley in the day. The spectacles are bound to stay with us forever.

Rola Kholi (3,810M) to Bhrigu Lake (4267 M)  (Click to View GPS data)

Distance: 5 kms

Duration: 4 hours

Today, the terrain and the trails continue with challenging ascents and are covered in scree, boulders, and broken rocks. There are few water sources, so carry enough bottles to support yourself.

We leave our camp around 9 AM and carry packed lunch with us. We cross the stream next to the campsite and start ascending. Just 10 minutes after the first ascent, the land opens up to a huge boulder and a wider skyline. From this spot, we can get a clean and panoramic view of the Seven Sister peaks, Deo Tibba, Solang Valley, Hanuman Tibba, and Beas Kund Valley. The grasslands from the boulder point come under the shepherd’s domain. For the next 2 kilometres, we can see many horses and cows grazing over the fresh grass covered in dewdrops.

The green tinge of the grassland dilutes and disappears at the end of 2 km. A mix of wild grey and light brown colours take over the landscape. The nature of the trail completely changes here. Be prepared to cross over boulders, narrow ascents filled with scree and rocky pathways. It is best to be with the group and follow the instructions of your trek leader while trekking through these trails. Because of frequent whiteouts, people tend to lose their way and get stuck in-between the rocks.

After covering a distance of 4 km, the trails incline towards a 30-degree ascent for another 1 km. Look down for the small flowers that sneak out and flash their bling through the cracks of the boulders. It’s a masterpiece in the mountains. Finally, at the end of 1 km, we reach a high ground with a fabulous view of Bhrigu Lake. Bhrigu Lake is a beautiful marvel which changes its colour according to season. During monsoon and summer, it changes from olive green to emerald green. During the winters it completely gets frozen and turns into pearl white colour. We stop for lunch near the lake, spend some quality time there and start heading back towards the campsite in Rola Kholi.

Rola Kholi (3,810M)  to Gulaba (3,000M)  (Click to View GPS data)

Distance: 7 kms

After dismantling the campsite and packing everything, we leave Rola Kholi at around 8 AM and reach Gulaba by 12 PM. The trail for today is less demanding with easy descents. A dedicated vehicle will pick us up from Gulaba and drop us back at Manali bus terminus around 2 PM. If you are traveling by flight, it is advisable to stay for the night, rest, and leave the next day. Manali roadways are prone to heavy traffic because of tourist attractions.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

Bhrigu Lake Trek – How to Plan your Trip Safely

bhrigu lake trek

Bhrigu lake trek is counted among the best short treks in all of Himachal. Lasting for a total of 3 days from Manali, it takes you through some amazing grasslands and a beautiful landscape. If you were going to be in Manali anytime soon and thinking of adding some trekking to your trip, the trek to Bhrigu Lake will be a perfect candidate to be included in the itinerary.

As the name suggests, the trek starts from Manali and ends at the Bhrigu Lake, after a total hike of 24 kilometers, spread over 3 to 4 days. Most people finish it in 3 days as I did. But if you wanted it to be more relaxed and with better acclimatization, you can also complete it in 4 days.

There are several travel companies available online and in Manali as well who arrange this trek. But if you wanted to, you can attempt it on your own as well. The trail is well marked, except for the winter season, and easy to navigate. During the trekking season, you will also find a lot of other hikers and can always seek help if traveling solo.

The difficulty level of the trek is beginner to intermediate and it can be attempted even by people who have little to no prior trekking experience. All that you need is a decent level of fitness. How can you plan your trip is what we will be discussing in this article.

Bhrigu Lake (or Brighu Lake) is a lake located at an altitude of 4,300 meters (14,100 ft) near Manali. The lake is named after Maharishi Bhrigu. As per the mythology, the sage used to meditate near the lake due to which, it is also considered sacred. Legend has it that the water of the lake never freezes completely even though the area around it gets buried under several feet of snow each year.

The lake is located on the various trek routes of the region. The most popular of all however is the trek from Manali to the lake itself.

How to reach Bhrigu Lake

In order to get to Bhrigu Lake, you will first have to reach Manali. This is really the easiest part of the journey. Manali is among the most visited hill stations of our country and remains connected by a motorable road for all 12 months.

If you were coming by your own car or motorcycle, starting from Delhi, the route will be as mentioned below.

Delhi – Panipat – Ambala – Rajpura – Roopar/Roopnagar – Kiratpur Sahib – Swarghat – Bilaspur – Sundar Nagar – Mandi – Kullu – Manali

From Delhi, it will take you about 14 hours to complete the journey. From Chandigarh, the travel time will be between 8 to 10 hours.

There are regular buses available for Manali from every major city nearby. You can either board a state-run bus like HRTC or HPTDC or book with a private tour company.

If you were coming from Delhi, you can easily find a Bus from ISBT Delhi. Private travel companies have their own pick-up points, something that you will need to check with them. Just do a Google search and you will get a long list of buses for Manali that you can book online as well.

The nearest airport to Bhrigu Lake is at Bhuntar, about 50 kilometers away from Manali. You can get a taxi to Manali from the airport itself. Catching a flight to this airport however is not recommended because it is not that well connected and flights often get canceled due to bad weather.

A better way hence will be to book a flight to Chandigarh airport and then book a taxi for Manali from there.

The nearest railway station, as well, is in Chandigarh . It is a major railhead and you will have no trouble finding a train that can drop you at Chandigarh.

Bhrigu Lake Trek Itinerary

After you have arrived in Manali, the only way to reach Bhrigu Lake is on foot. The itinerary for the trek will be as mentioned below.

  • Day 1: Drive from Manali to Gulaba. Trek to Rola Kholi.
  • Day 2: Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake and Return.
  • Day 3: Trek from Rola Kholi to Gulaba. Drive back to Manali.

A more relaxed version of this plan can be as mentioned below.

  • Day 1: Drive from Manali to Gulaba. Trek to Jonker Thach.
  • Day 2: Trek to Rola Kholi. Camp at Rola Kholi for the night.
  • Day 3: Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake and Return.
  • Day 4: Trek from Rola Kholi to Gulaba. Drive back to Manali.

The majority of the trekkers will attempt and complete the trek in 3 days because it is easily doable. But if you had an additional day in hand and wanted to spend more time in the lush green meadows, you can opt for the 4-day plan as well.

Any time that you spend in reaching to Manali and then getting back will be in addition to these days. For example, if you were coming from Delhi, the trek will become a 5 days affair.

A more detailed version of the itinerary is as mentioned below.

Manali to Gulaba to Rola Kholi – Day 1

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, I would assume that you arrived in Manali a day before and are now ready to move on to the Rola Kholi campsite. If you were traveling by Bus, a good way to plan would be to board the overnight bus for Manali. This way, you will reach Manali early in the morning and can be on your way to Rola Kholi right from the bus stand.

Either way, your first destination will be the small village of Gulaba, about 22 kilometers from Manali. If you booked your trek with a tour company, they will arrange the transport; and will pick you from either the hotel or the bus stand. If you were traveling on your own, there is an hourly bus from Manali to Gulaba that you can board. If not a bus, you can also opt for a shared taxi.

Gulaba to Jonker Thach / Rola Kholi

The trek begins near the Gulaba check post. You will walk through a dense forest and will arrive at Jonker Thach in about an hour and a half. The word ‘Thach’ means ‘a meadow’. So the name of the place actually is Jonker Meadow. It is a good camping ground and you can stay here for the night if you were planning the trek in 4 days.

bhrigu lake trek

My advice however would be that you continue to Rola Kholi, another grassland about 5 kilometers ahead of Jonker Thach. The hike is not that difficult except for a steep ascent just after Jonker Thach. The rest of the walk is through a scenic grazing ground used by the local shepherd. You will get a clear and beautiful view of the Hanuman Tibba and Seven Sisters peak throughout the trail.

From the Gulaba check post, it will take you about 4-5 hours to reach Rola Kholi, walking a distance of 7 kilometers. You will camp here for the night near a water stream called Chor Nallah. The gain in altitude will be from 2,050 meters (6,726 ft) to 3,830 meters (12,560 ft) at Rola Kholi.

You will cross a few water streams on the way where you can refill your water bottle. At the campsite, Chor Nallah will be your source of water.

Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake to Rola Kholi – Day 2

You must start early on this day as you have a lot of ground to cover and an uphill walk to handle. Except for a short level walk in between, most of the hike to the lake is a steep uphill climb. Depending on your fitness level and speed, it can take you anywhere between 4-5 hours to reach the lake from the campsite.

The gain in altitude will be from 3,830 meters (12,560 ft) at Rola Kholi to 4,270 meters (14,010 ft) at the lake. On the way, you will get a mesmerizing view of prominent peaks like Indrasen, Deo Tibba, and Hanuman Tibba. Arrive at the lake, spend some time and start on your way back on the same trail.

Your return hike will be all downhill so will take you less time. In total, the trekking distance will be 10 kilometers in both ways and can take 7-8 hours.

Rola Kholi to Gulaba to Manali – Day 3

The return journey to Manali is a fairly easy one. The walk will be all downhill to Gulaba from where you will drive back to Manali. You can stay for the night in Manali. A couple of other quiet and beautiful places are Kothi Village and Solang Valley where you can go on Day 3.

If you were short on time, you can in fact be on your way back home. I traveled back from Rola Kholi to the Manali bus stand and found an evening bus for Delhi. I slept in the Bus on my way back home and was in Delhi by 8 AM the next day.

winter trek to bhrigu lake

Best Time for Bhrigu Lake Trek

Bhrigu Lake remains open for only 4-5 months a year. Owing to its high altitude, the lake, and the trek remains buried under snow well until April and cannot be attempted. The route opens sometime in May and even then, you will find a lot of snow on the trail. After four months of summer and monsoon, it starts to snow here again in October.

Hence the limited time when you can visit Bhrigu Lake is from June to September. It can be attempted in May and October as well but it will entirely depend on the weather. The trek remains closed from November to April.

Even in this short span of time, the months of June and September are the best time to visit Bhrigu Lake. In July and August, it rains heavily in and around Manali which can definitely raise some safety concerns. So a safer time will be to go either before monsoon or after.

You can hire a personal guide and try to go for a winter trek but then you are just walking through the hills in the snow. There will be no lake to see really expect for white snow all around.

Personally, I will recommend visiting in September. All the rains would have brought the flora of the entire region to life. The grasslands, natural springs, meadows, waterfalls together would present a sight to behold. The mountains would appear as if they have just been washed clean and covered with a carpet of green.

Bhrigu Lake Weather

As you probably would have guessed by now, the weather at Bhrigu Lake remains cold throughout the year. The change is observed only between May to October as the season progresses. For the rest of the time, it is white all around. Let me explain month by month.

Bhrigu Lake in May

The opening and accessibility of the lake in May entirely depend on the weather. If you want to attempt it in May, make sure you check the weather conditions, speak to the local guides, prepare well, and make an informed decision. If you were able to make it to the lake in May, you will find it completely frozen still.

Bhrigu Lake Trek in June

The picture I posted above of the lake was taken towards the end of June. The trek opens up sometime in June and even then, there will be snow all the way till Rola Kholi. The lake will still be partially frozen. The average day temperature will be around 15° C. But in the night, it will still fall down close to 0° C.

Bhrigu Lake in July and August

The snow starts to melt in June and is mostly gone by July. This is when the green of the meadows and the blue of the lake really emerges. But this is also when the monsoon season in the valley arrives. If you must attempt the trek in the monsoon season, do it in the earlier part of the month. The average temperature will range between 5° to 15° C. Expect heavy rains in the entire region, sometimes enough to throw a wrench in your plans.

bhrigu lake

Bhrigu Lake Trek in Spetember

This in my opinion is the best time to go. The monsoon will be all gone but would, leaving behind plenty of greenery and beautiful vistas. It will however continue to get colder as the month will progress. With every passing week, there will be a significant drop in the average. During the night, it will surely come down to 0° C and even in the day, it will rarely cross 10° C.

Bhrigu Lake in October

Depending on the weather, the trek closes in October as the region starts to receive snow again. Before planning a trip at this time, please call ahead and inquire about the weather conditions.

Bhrigu Lake Trek Difficulty

Bhrigu Lake is considered as a beginner level trek. So the difficulty level is from easy to moderate. As long as you have a decent level of fitness, this can even be your first ever trek. There are some steep climbs involved but most of the trek is a steady and gradual uphill walk.

How to know if you are fit enough to attempt it? If you are able to walk / job 7-8 kilometers in an hour, you are good to go. If you have not been working out for a while and have been sitting idle, it would be wise to practice some long-distance walking before heading out to Manali.

  • Electricity – No
  • Mobile Network – Not available after Rola Kholi
  • ATM – The last one is in Manali
  • Stay – Tented Accommodation

Traveling with these people is surely an insanely enthralling experience. This is my second backpacking trip with these people and the way I had imagined backpacking to be has been fulfilled by them and they have given me surely more. The best thing about travelling with these people is that you understand the true meaning of travelling and experience it very closely. You are given great freedom but at the same time taking care of. You participate in the process of backpacking. You have a trip leader with you but he acts more like a friend as the days pass by! We attended the hornbill festival and did a wonderful trek to Dzukuo valley in Nagaland with the leadership of this group. You break the boundaries of yourself when you travel like a true traveller and that is possible with these people.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

I had an amazing trek with Trekmunk to Sandakphu November and December 2019. From the first moment of inquiry about the trek and all my questions were answered clearly and on time thanks to Dheeraj who managed to facilitate the trek quite well with his communication. Our guide Arpan was very experienced, calm, patient and very helpful to each trekker's needs in the group. He facilitated to find and hire a porter for me once I needed one although we were in the middle of the trail. He also arranged emergency transportation when I had to cut the trek and go back home for an urgent matter. I really enjoyed their service and I would like to repeat the same trek or try other treks with them again.

I had the best time of my life at Sandakhphu Phalut trek arranged by Trekmunk. Literally I felt like I was in heaven and I was soo very happy. I will recommend everyone to opt for Trekmunk. I was a solo woman traveler and was a bit worried, but things went very smoothly and I enjoyed it a lot. I miss my fellow trekkers too. I am very satisfied with their arrangements.

Chadar trek is considered to be one of the most difficult and dangerous treks, which requires a lot of skilled trek leaders, a perfect guide and a strong team of porters. I choose Trekmunk for Chadar and they proved they are a perfect team. Highly skilled trek leaders, professional skiers, gave us details on how to walk on slippery ice. Professionally trained and certified with wilderness medication programs always ready to take your care in any condition and travelers themselves. One will enjoy their company, their travel stories and their way of leading a trek. Cheers to team Trekmunk.

lake0

For someone who is visiting Manali, this trek is totality highly recommended one. Travelling like a tourist is one thing and if you are one, then we would request you shed your inhibitions and take this life-changing and transforming journey with the Himalayan Frontiers.

Today we will be going on one such journey to Brighu Lake.

A challenging yet rewarding trek to this beautiful location is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. This trek offers different shades of nature during a different time of the year.

From lush green flora in the spring to snow-covered peaks and frozen lake in winters and open meadows and beautiful brown leaves in autumn, one can never get enough of the beauty.

So while you are sitting behind your desk let us take you into a virtual tour to this beautiful two-nights and one day trek.

Brighu Lake Itinerary

While many other tours and travels present in the vicinity of Manali begin their trek from Gulaba, we believe in providing our travellers with the complete experience by starting from Kulang.

We start the day from our campsite situated in Old Manali, where we expect our trekkers to reach between 9 am to 10 am. After loading all the luggage we head to Kulang and start hiking for our Moridugh base camp. This first leg of the trek takes approximately 4 to 5 hours where we walk through the old British forest route.

The beauty of this range lies in its century-old maple trees and mighty parallel peaks. After reaching Moridugh, our travellers are greeted with warm food and friendly locals who work with us. Our cordial staff welcomes you with evening snacks and tea. Needless to mention that the sunset view from our campsite is also one of the major highlights of this trek.

We wake up early morning freshen up, our staff is all prepped up to serve breakfast and tea. We aim to leave the campsite at 7 am so we get ample time to enjoy, rest and walk at our own pace to Brighu lake. The trek generally takes 5-6 hours. This day we gain height and witness magic of nature. The landscapes vary from season to season but remain mesmerising during all time of the year.

On the way to Brighu Lake, we get the best views of Dhauladhar Range, Hanuman Tibba (the highest peak in Dhauladhar Range at height of 5928 mt), Manali Peak and friendship peak. Once at Brighu, we allow our trekkers to unwind, relax and have their lunch (we bring back our leftovers and disposables with us) and click a ton of photos for their Instagram.

On this day, we let our travellers be at ease and to wake up at their own pace. By this day we guarantee that you will be sad to leave our campsite and our friendly staff who will win your heart in no time.

But like all good things, this trek to Brighu Lake comes to an end too and we make our way back from the mountains post a good tea and filling breakfast.

We make sure to provide end to end comfortable services to our clients. Therefore, our driver picks you up at Kulang village and drops you off to Manali.
