The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is the starting point for experiencing the World War 2 Valor In The Pacific National Monument. Pearl Harbor tour-goers can watch a film about the attack on Pearl Harbor, browse informative displays, and learn about the events that led to the US entering WWII. There are also snack areas and food vendors available.

The USS Arizona Memorial is where visitors can honor and reflect on the heroes of the Day of Infamy and pay tribute to the sailors and marines killed on December 7, 1941. The memorial is built over the remains of the USS Arizona Battleship, and visitors can read the names of the 1,177 individuals who lost their lives. There is also an oil leak, known as the Black Tears, on the surface of the sunken remains facing the USS Missouri.

The USS Missouri is the last battleship built by the US Navy, finished in 1944. It earned 11 Battle Stars during its tour of duty. Visitors can walk the decks to learn about its history and stand on the spot where Japan surrendered, marking the end of WWII.

The USS Bowfin Submarine , also known as the Pearl Harbor Avenger,  was launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the Pearl Harbor Attack. The sub resupplied troops and provided medical assistance during combat. Visitors can tour it and see artifacts from other submarines, including a collection of sub-launched missiles.

We got to explore many of the scenic views of Oahu on this tour. Nelson was a phenomenal guide and helped us capture many fantastic photos to remember our time here. He also made sure our entire family was in many great photos as well! This was a great way to start our trip in Hawaii Tammy M.

Tired of seeing my overexposed or underexposed pictures in Yelp? Took Blue Hawaii Photo Tours to try to improve my picture taking. Sunrise tours pickups start at 530am. Wife and I are in our mid 60s, and need all the beauty rest we can get. So signed up for the 5 hour sunset tour, at $80 per person. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Tour director Marie drives a clean late model 12 passenger luxury van, arriving 7 minutes after the 2pm pickup time. Only 1 other couple to pick up, as rain forecast. Maximum of 7 people on tours, and no kids. No dealing with a child with a temper tantrum. Tell that to the 71 year old everyone knows! Van stops at Koko Head, and Halona Blowhole. No takers for recreating the "From Here to Eternity" scene, although if the wife wasn't here, I would have volunteered with Marie! Just kidding. Further stops at Mokapu Point, and Nuuanu Pali Lookout, scene of a famous battle between ancient Hawaiian warrior tribes, and warriors pushed off the cliff. Also saw the forbidden "Staircase to Heaven" trail along the ridge of the mountains. In depth narration by Marie on the history and cultural aspects of Hawaiian life. Commentary on the different animal and bird species. Did you know that you can hunt wild boar anytime, but must use a bow and arrow? At each stop, Marie individually helped each of us improve our photography though the understanding of High Dynamic Range imaging, exposure compensation, and white balance. The pictures in this review from my Moto G5 plus smart phone, not from my more sophisticated Nikon 16 megapixel 20 zoom pocket camera. One spot was next to a stripped motor scooter, with both tires missing. We kept a close lookout on our van when we got out. Rough neighborhood! Final stop was at Diamond Head Beach, to watch sunset. Narrow access road with parking for single vehicles only. No bus would be able to get out of that limited access way! Wife liked the tour so much, we signed up two days later for the Circle Island tour. Four people from the rained out Friday tour joined us. Marie will cancel a trip if it is raining too much of the day, while buses go in a monsoon.. Saw shooting areas for the current Hawaii 5-0, Koko railroad trail, Gilligan's Island, Magnum PI house, polo clubs. Stops at Turtle Bay, North Shore surf beaches. Among other spots. We were fortunate not to get the fourth row in the back, where you feel every bump, and can have your head hit the ceiling when going over a pothole! We've taken the great circle tour on a 48 passenger bus for $100, but this was much better even at $150. Discount for repeat customers. You get individual attention, and go to out of the way places no bus can go. Marie made Hawaii a safer place, as tour took yours truly, one Driving While Asian guy, off the road for two days!

Darin was a perfect tour guide! We were picked up promptly at 9am at our hotel in a very clean/comfortable van with chilled water bottles waiting for us. We booked a private tour of Pearl Harbor, which Darin is extremely knowledgeable on. Thank goodness because we had some great questions! Our tickets were ready to go, and we were escorted to the boarding area at the correct time to see USS Arizona, Bowfin, and museum. The Missouri was closed, but we would have had time to see it too (at our 'not messing around' pace). Darin checked in by text, and we met back up with him for lunch. Darin planned lunch for us, a great place 5 mins away called '608'. Beautiful, overlooking the sailboats, and the food was perfect. We had a 3:50p flight to catch to Maui. Darin dropped us at the airport, and we could not have planned it better. This is as easy as it gets. The price included our USS Arizona tickets, and extra fee for airport drop off - it was a win-win.

Photo of Shaylyn W.

We did the waterfall swim 5 hour and it was great. Darin our tour guide was full of info about the island and knew the best spots not overly touristy! He was so friendly and helpful. To see the real beauty of the north shore highly recommend!

If you want a guide to show you a lot of the amazing things to see and do on Oahu....look no further. Marie offers a plethora of photo tour options and hands on photography tips, be it a high dollar camera or a cell phone, my wife did the cell phone and learned some cool stuff and I lugged around a Rebel T3i and thoroughly enjoyed our adventure. We got to see a lot of beautiful places and Marie was full of historical facts. Most tours consist of 5 to 8 people, no small children...older big ones like me are acceptable. The sunrise plus island tour was spectacular and the group of shutterbugs we travelled with were extremely friendly. Every tour is different due to weather, the time of year, etc. We got to take pics of a giant green sea turtle that was basking in the sunlight on...Turtle beach. We took a phot tour from another company last year and it was very good, but this was our favorite....good job Marie, thanks for showing us Oahu. Another part of the tour I really liked was stopping at a food trailer park on North Shore...can you say garlic shrimp? There were lots of trucks...foodie paradise. Marie needs to do a foodie tour...sign us up!

My hobby is photography but with my limited skills, I decided to book a photo tour while we vacationed in Oahu last June of 2015. I came across Blue Hawaii photo tours without knowing anything prior about them, but it was a great experience for me. The owner, Marie Turner is goes above and beyond any photo tour I came across. She is not only been traveling around the globe, but she has so much knowledge and willing to share in whatever capacity. I have learned things on my camera that I never knew was available and they will help me tremendously going forward, and I am deeply appreciated with her instructions as well as her kindness.

I booked the Sunrise Plus Island Tour and had a wonderful time! Bonnie was such a delight and took us to so many great spots and I learned some new photo tricks along the way. The tour was definitely the highlight of my Oahu trip! If you are looking for an informative trip with some breathtaking views and interesting attractions book a tour for yourself!

Five star tour all the way! I joined Marie and a couple others for the sunrise photo tour. Marie picked me up at my hotel at 5:15am and we were at the beach in time for sunrise. Marie provided tripods, photography tips, and lots of information about the island. Not only did she help me with my camera photography (we worked on HDR shots, aperture priority mode shots and one waterfall scene playing with shutter speeds). No matter what level of photography you are at, Marie spends one on one time with each person on the tour so you can get the help that you need. She also showed me a few tricks with my camera flash and Iphone HDR for later use. This was a phenomenal morning and I would not only recommend this tour and company, but I would also excitedly go on another one of their tours myself! Thank you Blue Hawaii Photo Tours!!! Bravo.

Playing with shutter speeds at the waterfall. Marie even provided bug spray for anyone who needed...she has thought of it all!

One of the best tour trips I've ever taken. I and my hubby went on the sunrise tour, which started at 5:30 AM. Our guide Marie was an expert about the history of Hawaii and unique areas to explore that are off the beaten path of most tours. She is also a professional photographer. Her help and expertise in learning how to photograph sets this tour apart. In a few short hours, Marie helped me understand how to use an app for my iPhone to adjust for black/white balance, shutter speed, color temperature, etc. Marie also educated other more experienced photographers on the trip as well. I took some great shots, and I'm really thrilled that I have some new skills.

Touring Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor, a history lesson and memorial service all in one

HONOLULU – Nearly 1.7 million people toured Pearl Harbor last year, making it one of Hawaii’s most-visited destinations.

But don’t call it a tourist attraction, said actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who narrates a powerful self-guided audio tour of the site.

“It’s a national cemetery,” she said.

She advised us to “be mindful of where you are” on the five-minute boat ride over to the USS Arizona, where more than 900 U.S. soldiers remain entombed under the water nearly 83 years after the surprise attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

But I don’t think any of us needed the reminder.

The National Park Service opened Pearl Harbor National Memorial in 1962, 21 years after the attack, which immediately thrust a reluctant United States into World War II.

It is somber, deeply emotional experience, a history lesson and memorial service all in one.

The entire site spans 21 acres, spread across land and sea. My husband and I spent three and a half hours there on our recent two-week tour of Hawaii, with another 90 minutes at the nearby Battleship Missouri Memorial. And we could have stayed much longer.

I thought I had a broad understanding of what happened here in 1941, but I learned a lot during my hours-long tour.

The Arizona is the centerpiece experience, but there is much more to explore, including two terrific museums, a short orientation film and a series of outdoor viewing areas with signage that help to explain more than what happened here, but also how and why.

And nearby, there are several other related sites including the USS Bowfin, a World War II-era submarine; the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, with dozens of military aircraft on display; and the USS Missouri Memorial, where World War II came to an end with the signing of the Japanese surrender in September 1945.

Touring the USS Arizona Memorial

The centerpiece of the park is a small white structure erected in the water atop the USS Arizona, the battleship that sunk within minutes of being hit by Japanese bombers shortly after 8 a.m. on that sunny Sunday.

Accessible only by boat, the Arizona Memorial, 184 feet long, straddles the sunken hull of the battleship without touching it.

The middle section of the memorial includes openings in the floor overlooking the Arizona. And at the far end: a marble wall listing all 1,177 names of those killed on the ship.

The Arizona is still leaking oil --- about 2 quarts a day, according to the Park Service. “To remove the oil would be to desecrate the tomb,” said Curtis. “Many of the survivors think of the oil droplets as the tears of their comrades.”

Peter Preis, son of the late Alfred Preis, who designed the memorial, described the architecture of the structure this way: The memorial sags in the center, expressing initial defeat, and then it swings up gently, symbolizing ultimate victory. “The overall effect is serenity, not sadness,” he explains in the audio guide.

Visitors are given about 15 minutes on the memorial, which is just enough time to see and process it all.

Note: Admission to Pearl Harbor National Memorial is free, although a $1 fee is assessed when making an advanced reservation for the boat ride over to the Arizona memorial. Reservations are available eight weeks in advance and often fill up quickly. Standby admission is available on some days.

On the day of our visit, which was Super Bowl Sunday, everybody in the standby line was able to get over to see the Arizona, but I was told that is not always the case.

Exploring the museums

Pearl Harbor’s two side-by-side museums, the Road to War Museum and the Attack Museum, are small but insightful, filled with artifacts and exhibits that provide both context and consequences for what happened in the years and months leading up to the attack as well as the period after.

Among the items on display:

* A first draft of President Franklin Roosevelt’s address to Congress on Dec. 7, which made famous the phrase “a date which will live in infamy.” The speech originally included “a date which will live in world history”; but “world history” is crossed out and “infamy” is written in instead.

* A clock from Chaplain Thomas Kirkpatrick’s Arizona stateroom, stopped at 8:05, the time the ship exploded, killing Kirkpatrick and more than 1,000 others. The clock was recovered in 1942.

* A U.S. government-issued gas mask, which residents were required to wear in Honolulu after the attack.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor is often described as a surprise attack, but it wasn’t a complete surprise to everyone.

A report in March 1941, dubbed the Martin-Bellinger Report, warned of the likelihood of a surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor and recommended daily air patrols. But because of shortages of aircraft and personnel, patrols were limited to times when “intelligence indicates that a surface raid is probable,” according to a museum exhibit.

On Dec. 7, at 6:30 a.m., American troops sunk a Japanese midget submarine trying to enter the harbor. And at about 7 a.m., operators at Opana Radar Station on the north side of Oahu spotted a large fleet of planes headed to the island. However, the planes were “assumed to be our own,” according to the exhibit.

They weren’t. “The detection of the mobile radar at Opana remains one of the great ‘what if’ questions surrounding Pearl Harbor,” reads one exhibit.

After about two hours of fighting, the attack was over. Total casualties: More than 2,400 Americans killed, almost half of whom were on the Arizona.

Curtis, on the audio guide, said the Japanese hoped the attack would demoralize the United States.

Instead, she said, “The attack did something Japan had not counted on – it united America.”

Touring the USS Missouri

Pearl Harbor is still an active naval base, consolidated with Hickam Air Force Base in 2010. Visitors to the USS Missouri Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum must take a free shuttle from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to access the sites.

The USS Missouri was not at Pearl Harbor during the attack in late 1941. In fact, it was still under construction in New York City, launched in late 1944 and sent to Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Its main claim to fame during World War II came on Sept. 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay, when the Japanese officially surrendered on the ship’s deck, ending World War II. A photo on a ship wall marks the spot where Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and others gathered to sign the Instrument of Surrender.

“This is the exact spot where World War II ended,” said guide Duke Acenas. “It took 23 minutes to end more than six years of bloody conflict.”

The Missouri, sent to Korea in 1953, was decommissioned in 1955. In the mid-1980s, President Ronald Reagan recommissioned the Missouri, which was sent to the Persian Gulf War in 1990.

It has been opened to the public as a history museum since 1999.

Visitors can tour the deck as well as the lower levels, including living quarters, mess halls, machine room – the ship even had a doughnut shop.

The Missouri is docked along Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row, bow to bow with the sunken Arizona.

Said Acenas, “They sit here as a symbol of peace for everyone around the world.”
