Art Rock n Roll at its best, BODEGA are the Shiny New Models on the Broken Equipment tour in Leeds

I’ve been wanting to see this band for around 3 years, ever since Spotify threw Jack in Titanic onto my ‘weekly discovery’ playlist, it has remained a most played track for 2 years. The thought that a corporate machine using mathematical algorithms would dictate such a creative gesture would most likely be abhorrent to Ben Hozie and Nikki Belfiglio , their anti device and corporation stance might crumble at the thought of it happening. Nevertheless, my attendance at this gig and the purchase of their latest album Broken Equipment is down to that one flicker of a computer’s 1 s and Os .

Tonight at the Brudenell in Leeds they redefined Art Rock, although it’s really impossible to pigeonhole this NYC band into any genre, Hozie would even say “We are really just a rock’n’roll band” which is as real as him also saying “This is the best night of the tour”, do you believe it?, do they say that every night?.

The setlist is a mahoosive 27 songs and includes a Bob Dylan cover of Slow Train there are traces of emotional singing, along with the more distinctive shoutathons set to the drumbeat of Tai Lee and Nikki Belfiglio. I only see Lee ’s shocking red hair bobbing up and down behind the cymbals as I’m camped in front of Nikki , slightly mesmerised by her persona, and also due to the fact that there’s no space to move in the sold out Brudenell. I have for company a strange man to my left who just haphazardly decides to bang Ho zie ’s on stage monitor with his hand in time to the chorus.

My favourite track of the new album is thrown out at 2 nd in the setlist. The monumental Statuette on the Console (which should be played loud wherever you are now), features Nikki on main vocals, and its the best song the Ramones never wrote, relentless in its math rock strumming and drumbeat.

Whilst Belfiglio is animated, drumming, wild expression dancing and the odd bit of sample play, Hozie prefers the step forward step back approach, guitarist Dan Ryan is pulling all kinds of shapes on this small stage and bass player ‘The Professor’ Adam See prefers to just nod his head and offer the occasional prophetic statements like “This gig is a straight A”.

“ Any Requests?” Hozie asks, someone shouts “Play the hits” which brings a wry smile, “What Hits?…Oh you mean this one” and Jack In Titanic is launched. Crowd singing along and even some bouncing up and down. Elsewhere other highlights were Doers , NYC ( disambiguation ), How did this happen? and I am not a Cinephile but really the whole set had to be watched and I’m now regretting not catching more than one night on this run .

The closest you might get to a comparison would be a young Talking Heads/LCD Soundsystem/B52’s and a sprinkling of Lou Reed, but to be honest, just don’t bother trying – get this band in your life and don’t wait for a machine to do it for you .

NEW ALBUM INCOMING FROM BODEGA

Nyc’s bodega return today with news of their signing to chrysalis (laura marling, liz phair) and that their third album, “our brand could be yr life”, is coming april 12th..

The band also share their thrilling new single, “Tarkovski”, debuted by Steve Lamacq on his new BBC 6 Music show yesterday evening, and already fast becoming a live favourite after appearing in the set during their last UK tour. It acts as a first taster of their upcoming LP, an ever-ambitious, fiercely playful record that widens their sonic palette ever further, offering up a cohesive, moreish set of songs that are both stylistically diverse and irresistibly anthemic.

Ben Hozie, joint lead vocalist of BODEGA had the following to say about the themes behind their new single:

“‘Tarkovski’ is a pun on the famous Russian director and skiing; I was enamoured by his book “Sculpting in Time” but found that many of his professed rules and guidelines for filmmaking were broken by his own filmmaking practices. Theory never really gets at what you want and applying theory to the chaotic practice of art making (while still useful and essential) is like skiing down a wild slope.”

The new single is accompanied by a visually arresting music video, directed by Luca Balser and starring Nikki’s mother. It quotes the climactic candle-carrying sequence in Tarkovsky’s 1983 feature-length ‘Nostalghia’ but quickly veers from studied long takes into punchy pop vogueing: theory never gets at what you really want.

In addition, a B-side to the single, “Adaptation of the Truth About Marie”, is available now exclusively from BODEGA’s  Bandcamp .

The band’s third and greatest LP yet, ​​​”Our Brand Could Be Yr Life”, is a full ‘remake’ of Ben and Nikki’s old band BODEGA BAY’s sole LP which was a self-released 33 track album from 2015.

They approached this project like how a director might ‘remake’ one of their old films which meant writing a number of new songs and developing old ideas in new directions. It is a concept album about the current corporate mentality of underground/indie rock, where the band simultaneously desecrate and celebrate a certain indie rock cannon, hoping to redeem its’ ‘fall from grace’ like foolish missionaries who inherited a stained formal tradition that needs to change in order to become meaningful again.

The album will be available on digital, CD and a silver coloured vinyl paired with a 20 page lyric booklet. Rough Trade will also have an exclusive run of 100 lino prints, handmade, numbered and signed by the band’s own Nikki Belfiglio.

Fontaines D.C. announce huge 2024 UK and Ireland headline tour 

The dates come ahead of their upcoming album ‘Romance’

Fontaines D.C. have announced details of a huge UK and Ireland tour, set to kick off later this year. Find ticket details below.

Announced today (Friday, April 19), the new dates arrive in celebration of the band’s upcoming album, ‘Romance’ .

Grian Chatten and co. shared news of their fourth LP earlier this week, dropping the pummelling new single ‘Starburster’ and confirming that it will be arriving later this August.

Produced by James Ford ( Arctic Monkeys , Foals , Depeche Mode ), the release will mark the follow-up to 2022’s acclaimed ‘ Skinty Fia ‘ and will be shared via XL Recordings. Visit here to pre-order it.

The new tour dates are set to take place across the latter half of 2024, and kick off on November 20 with an opening night at The Halls venue in Wolverhampton. From there, the tour will continue with a gig at Alexandra Palace in London two days later.

Shows in Cardiff, Plymouth, Nottingham and Manchester are lined up for the remainder of the month, and the final three shows will take place during the first week of December.

The December shows include a gig at First Direct Arena in Leeds (3), Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena (4), and finally, a stop at the 3Arena in Dublin on December 6.

Support for all dates will come from Sorry , and DIIV will also be joining the Irish band for the gig at Alexandra Palace.

Tickets go on sale next Friday (April 26) at 10am and will be available here . Fans who pre-order the album by 3pm on April 23 will also have access to pre-sale tickets. Check out a full list of new tour dates below.

The 9-date tour through November and December will follow a summer of extensive festival shows for Fontaines D.C., which includes performances at Glastonbury , Reading & Leeds , Fuji Rock, Pukkelpop Festival, and more.

The announcement of ‘Romance’ also came with the release of lead single, ‘Starburster’ – a song inspired by frontman Grian Chatten suffering a panic attack and accompanied by a sinister and cinematic video directed by Aube Perrie ( Megan Thee Stallion , Harry Styles , The Hives ).

Reviewing the track, NME noted how the band had “taken a perfect left turn” , adding: “Leaning on the Massive Attack trip-hop noir vibes first hinted at on ‘Skinty Fia’’s title track, ‘Starburster’ is a pensive art-rock beast that fuses elements of electronica and hip-hop more akin to their fellow striking countrymen (and recent collaborators ) KNEECAP .

“Bravado meets psychedelia as the frontman says he’s ‘over harder than a turned up challenger’ and ‘the pig on the Chinese calendar’.” it added. “The video, too – a fever dream of blood, animals and a cast of misfits trying to find their way – further supports their referencing of Shygirl and Sega Bodega as key inspirations.”

Speaking about the title of the album, bassist Conor Deegan said: “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as ‘ Dogrel ‘. The second album (‘ A Hero’s Death ‘) is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

He added: “This record is about deciding what’s fantasy – the tangible world, or where you go in your mind. What represents reality more? That feels almost spiritual for us.”

Since their third album, ‘Skinty Fia’, Fontaines D.C. have also covered Nick Drake’s ‘Cello Song’ for a compilation album .

In December, the band teamed up with Massive Attack and Young Fathers to announce the release of a limited edition 12” single to support Médecins Sans Frontières in their relief efforts in Gaza. The ‘Ceasefire’ EP will arrive on June 1.

Brooklyn's Bodega puts on art punk party in Pittsburgh concert

The lyrical content for Brooklyn’s Bodega may be serious — the absurdity of modern life, consumerism, technology, identity and more — but the messages are wrapped up in catchy, post-punk nuggets.

In their show Wednesday at Club Cafe on Pittsburgh’s South Side, Bodega showcased their newest album, “Our Band Could Be Yr Life” — named in a nod to Michael Azerrad’s book chronicling underground rock bands, “Our Band Could Be Your Life.”

Singer Nikki Belfiglio was front and center, keeping time on a hi-hat, dancing and engaging the crowd, while guitarist/singer Ben Hozie rocked a giant furry hat to her right. Joined by guitarist Dan Ryan, stand-up percussionist Adam Shumski and bassist Tim Bliss (who pulled double duty fronting opener Big Bliss), Bodega delivered a fun, art punk party to Pittsburgh.

When a member of the crowd asked if they’d be playing “new” music or “new, new” music, Hozie joked that they’d be playing “nu” metal, delivering the first two notes of Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff” before playing “Dedicated to the Dedicated.”

Other highlights included “ATM,” “Cultural Consumer III,” “Gyrate” and “City Is Taken,” as well as a variety of songs that would have fit right in alongside a B-52s, Talking Heads or Ramones show.

To mark the last night with Big Bliss, both bands crammed on to the stage for a cover of Wire’s “Mannequin,” with the jam almost a tour tradition, according to Belfiglio.

“If you don’t, you’re out of DIY,” she joked. “A tragedy, I know.”

New York City’s Big Bliss — the project of brothers Tim and Cory Race — delivered a post-punk set peppered with songs from 2023’s “Vital Return,” like “Solace” and closer “Tell Me When You’re Ready,” as well as a song released just last week, “You’re A Man.”
