Funk Ensemble Brooklyn Funk Essentials Release New Single “How Happy” | WATCH NEW VIDEO!

brooklyn funk essentials tour 2023

BROOKLYN FUNK ESSENTIALS ‘How Happy’ New single & video out today

(January 18, 2023) New York, NY — The cult funk ensemble Brooklyn Funk Essentials have returned to chase the January blues away with the release today of joyous, new R&B-disco-funk jam ‘How Happy’ , to follow up on the success of last year’s singles ‘Scream!’ and ‘AA Side Single’.

‘How Happy’ once again features the legendary, inimitable Alison Limerick on vocals and is released ahead of the group’s hotly anticipated seventh studio album ‘Intuition’, which will come out in Spring 2023 on Dorado Records, the original label who first signed Brooklyn Funk Essentials in 1994.

‘How Happy’ is accompanied by an effervescent video, featuring Alison Limerick, BFE founder and bassist Lati Kronlund and the entire BFE lineup (singer/guitarist/co-writer Desmond Foster, drummer Hux Flux, Kristoffer Wallman on keys and Ebba Asman on trombone/vocals), performing and vibing together in the studio.

The uplifting bop shares the joy and connection from the early days of meeting someone, the uncontrollable butterflies and romantic fantasy of ultimately being together. Originally written, yet unreleased, in the early ’90s, ‘How Happy’ was a distinctive, boogie-funk groove inspired by The S.O.S Band, Jennifer Lara and Grace Jones. For the new album, the track developed further into a mid-tempo, R&B-disco stomp with the addition of the band’s signature horns and strings for good measure.

BFE received a huge welcome when they returned in summer 2022 to release new material and tour Europe. Of the first single ‘Scream!’, Jazz FM said “I’m a little bit addicted to it” and “Here is a tune that we’re all loving, it’s just so good”, and Blues & Soul called it “A stonking cut of Afro Funk blessedness”. The follow up ‘AA Side Single’ was equally well received, Jazz FM said “It sounds particularly good on a Friday!” and Blues & Soul called it “A funk behemoth”.

Across a career that stretches 28 years and six albums, BFE have established themselves as an audacious project, fusing soul, hip hop, spoken word, jazz, Latin and of course, funk. The band have built up a loyal international cult following on every continent since inception in 1993 by iconic producer Arthur Baker and bassist Lati Kronlund. BFE was born out of New York’s buzzing hip hop, jazz and slam poetry scenes in the early 90s, rotating some of the finest musicians, DJs, poets, rappers and singers. BFE’s celebrated debut album ‘Cool & Steady & Easy’ (Dorado/RCA 1995) scored an underground hit with the version of Pharoah Sanders’ ‘The Creator Has a Master Plan’, while tracks like ‘Take The L Train’ and ‘Big Apple Boogaloo’ became DJ favorites.

BFE released ‘Funk Ain’t Ova’ on Dorado Records in 2015 and during touring the band were joined by UK soul singer Alison Limerick, for whom Lati Kronlund had originally written and produced the stone-cold classic house anthem ‘Where Love Lives’ in the early 90s. Limerick took over as the band’s lead singer in 2016 and eventually became co-writer.

Madonna asks judge to toss lawsuit over late concert start time: "Fans got just what they paid for"

April 4, 2024 / 8:40 PM EDT / CBS News

Madonna's attorneys on Thursday filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit against the pop superstar for starting a concert two hours late, arguing the plaintiffs didn't demonstrate any clear injuries, court documents show.

Plaintiffs Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden filed the lawsuit earlier this year after attending one of Madonna's global  Celebration Tour  shows in Brooklyn in December, alleging they were "misled" by the 8:30 p.m. advertised start time.

They also sued Barclays Center and Live Nation for "wanton exercise in false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices."

The plaintiffs argued they wouldn't have purchased tickets if they'd known the concert was going to start at 10:30 p.m. They also claimed the show's end time of about 1 a.m. possibly inconvenienced or injured concertgoers as a result of limited transportation options and being forced to stay up later than planned.

Madonna's lawyers argued that concerts rarely start on time, and that hers in particular are well known for their late starts. They also pointed out that Hadden posted on Facebook the day after that concert that he had "never missed a Madonna Tour" and that he later told CNN he had "been to every Madonna tour since 1985," making it clear the late start time couldn't have come as a surprise, the motion read.

According to the court documents, Hadden also praised the show on Facebook, calling it "[i]ncredible, as always!"

Madonna

"Mr. Hadden's press interviews at best suggest he may be irritated that one of his favorite acts takes the stage later than he would prefer," the lawyers said, arguing that this was not sufficient grounds for a claim of injury.

Madonna's lawyers also alleged there was no proof the late start time injured any concertgoers, including the plaintiffs, who they argued stayed to watch the whole show instead of leaving early.

"Fans got just what they paid for: a full-length, high-quality show by the Queen of Pop," Madonna's lawyers said.

January's lawsuit wasn't the first time fans tried to take action over Madonna's late start time. In 2019, a Florida fan  sued over Madonna's delayed start  in Miami Beach.

"There's something that you all need to understand," Madonna told her fans during a Las Vegas concert in 2019. "And that is, that a  queen is never late ."

Monophonics will play a show with soul belter Lee Fields at the Paradise.

For those partial to music rooted in vintage soul and its allied forms, next week will seem like Christmas. On Tuesday, Seth Applebaum and his Ghost Funk Orchestra hit town, nine members strong, on a twin bill with Marco Benevento at Brighton Music Hall. Two nights later, West Coast band Monophonics play just down the street at the Paradise. They’re also on a twin bill, with traditionalist Lee Fields — ”arguably the best soul singer alive,” according to the mavens at his current label, Daptone Records. In between, on Wednesday, four-piece funk and soul-jazz powerhouse the New Mastersounds bring their ferocious live show to the Sinclair in Cambridge. Friday will be a day to rest and recover.

During a recent Zoom call, Applebaum characterizes the Ghost Funk Orchestra sound as jazz-funk, although he qualifies his answer: “It gets harder and harder with every release, because I keep trying to touch different genres and try new things. But at the core of it, it’s the jazz side of me. It all starts with jazz.”

He started GFO as a “basement recording project,” playing drums, guitar, bass, “everything that I know how to play.” It is essentially still that, he says; he still writes the songs, and then records them until he runs out of instruments that he knows how to play, at which point he turns to the assistance of other musicians, which expands the scope of the music in a big way. He took to posting the results on Bandcamp, and eventually, after being nudged by listeners, Ghost Funk Orchestra began performing live.

The band’s new record, “A Trip to the Moon,” certainly exudes a cinematic, big-band jazz-funk sound. Indeed, the record comes across as a soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist. It revolves around a loose concept involving a woman whose astronaut partner has just left her to travel to the moon; back on Earth, she’s wondering what will become of her and the man who has blasted off into space.

The concept was inspired by Applebaum’s discovery that recordings of astronaut communications on various Apollo space flights — most notably, the epochal Apollo 11 — were in the public domain. The self-described “space nerd” began listening, and the recordings became the catalyst for “A Trip to the Moon” and a vital element of it as well.

“I think I was about halfway through the songs that ended up being the album when I discovered the NASA recordings,” Applebaum says. He started playing around with sequencing the tracks he had already made and interspersing clips from the NASA recordings in between each of the songs. “It made a weird kind of sense, even though the songs that the clips were tying together had not been overtly space themed until that point. Now they just added this interesting context, and once I decided that they were going to be the glue on the record, it helped inform me writing the remaining songs.”

Ghost Funk Orchestra's Seth Applebaum looked to the moon for inspiration for his latest project.

The whole that resulted — music that is by turns slinky, ethereal, or explosive, with vocalists Romi Hanoch and Megan Mancini giving voice to the woman left behind, joined to interstitial recordings that convey everything from the astronauts’ deadpan humor to sheer wonder at what they’re witnessing — is singular and striking.

Tuesday’s show is the first on the band’s tour. Naturally, they’ll be playing songs from the new album, but Applebaum hasn’t yet decided whether the audience will also hear the Apollo transmissions. “It’s very possible,” he says. “I would just have to figure out the best way to do it.”

As it happens, the latest Monophonics album, “Sage Motel,” is also organized around a concept of sorts. Kelly Finnigan, the band’s frontman and songwriter, indicates during a Zoom conversation that its source was something connected to mundane rather than celestial travel: a motel that he regularly drove by in Oakland.

“I would see this motel off the freeway, and it just really stuck in my head,” he says. “When we start writing songs for a new record, we usually start just writing music, kicking around ideas. I like to try and challenge myself, and instead of something about just, you know, guy and girl, I wanted to have another character, and the character was the motel.”

That idea framed the record; each of the songs is a story that’s happening in one of the motel’s rooms. The album is bookended by two instrumentals, “Check In” and “Check Out”; in between, each song opens a door on depictions of love’s complications, of affairs coming and going (starting with the title track, which involves a relationship between a strait-laced man and a prostitute that likely won’t end well).

The band even extended the concept beyond the songs, setting up a web page (now expired) for the motel, as well as an Instagram page (still active), and a room reservation phone number, which plays a snippet from one of the songs when called. The band’s characteristic psychedelic-soul sound takes on a slower, moodier vibe throughout the record, which seems to fit the subject matter.

“Motels are crossroads for people,” observes Finnigan, “they’re intersections for people traveling, whether for work or for personal reasons. They might be picking up and moving, they might be a broken relationship, they might be searching for love. It’s just representative, if you think about all the people that are in motels and hotels, and what each of their stories are. Obviously, everybody can hear the record as they want and interpret it as they want, but that’s kind of the guide.”
