brunei day tour from miri

As one of the most popular destinations in Sarawak, Miri forms a gateway to the famous Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park. Miri used to be a bit of a cowboy village in the past, where people mainly came in search of oil. It is said that Malaysia’s petroleum industry once started in Miri. Years later however, Miri grew out to be a modern city though still a bit overshadowed by the neighboring oil state of Brunei (Miri was granted city status in 2005). The city is home to a population of about 300,000 people, and this makes it the second biggest city of Sarawak behind Kuching.

Brunei is one of the countries on the island of Borneo, in 2 distinct sections surrounded by Malaysia and the South China Sea. It’s known for its beaches and biodiverse rainforest, much of it protected within reserves. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is home to the opulent Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosque and its 29 golden domes. The capital’s massive Istana Nurul Iman palace is the residence of Brunei’s ruling sultan.

Niah National Park’s main claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilization in the region. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found at Niah, making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. In 1958, a discovery was made which confirmed Niah’s place as a site of major archaeological significance. Harrison and his team unearthed a skull which was estimated to be 40,000 years old.

After that, you will visit Kampung Ayer, the world's largest stilt settlement that houses over 30,000 residents, earning the nickname "Venice of the East".

Brunei is home to the world's largest residential palace at the Istana Nurul Iman. It boasts 1,788 rooms, a 5000-guest banquet hall, and a mosque that can fit 1,500 worshippers. Your tour ends with a visit to Jerudong Park, one of Southeast Asia's largest and most expensive amusement parks.

Brunei To Miri, Malaysia: Driving Across The Border Made Easy

Not everyone has had the opportunity to get into a car and hop across a border. Since India is such a huge country, the concept is still quite novel to us. That being said, driving across the border from Brunei to Miri in Malaysia invariably raised a lot of questions. What should we do to prepare for it? Is it easy or does it take a lot of leg work? Is it worth it?

So we asked around and it turned out that a lot of people used their weekends to drive across from Brunei to Miri. Needless to say, we soon joined their ranks. Since we managed to find out an adequate amount of information, I thought I would put it together in a post so that anyone else searching for it wouldn’t have to look far.

How do you get from brunei to miri, sarawak.

Let’s deal with the logistics of travel from Brunei to Miri Sarawak aka the Borneo part of Malaysia. You can choose one of two options. If you live close to or in Bandar then you could choose a flight but this is expensive!

Or you could choose to go by road which is what most of the locals do. Since Brunei is such a small country, it is easy to pop across the border in a day.

As a tourist if you choose to go by road you would have to hire a driver or catch a bus. Note that the buses are infrequent so you would have to plan in advance. We had our own rental since we were staying in Brunei for an extended duration. This article talks about how you can take your car or rental across the border from Brunei to Miri.

Can You Drive Across The Brunei-Malaysia Border?

Yes! You can! The only thing is that you do need to have a few documents ready before you do. One you do it for the first time and have everything in order, the subsequent trips become easier and easier.

In fact, the route is so simple that from the second time around, you probably won’t require to use maps for directions. Note that the documents that are required to cross the border between Brunei to Miri are the same that are required at other check posts along Brunei border with Malaysia.

Documents To Keep Ready

Like I mentioned before, there are a couple of documents that you will need to have ready when you cross the border. Remember that this is just like crossing customs in an international terminal of an airport. Only here, you drive through which I have to admit is really cool! Let’s take a look at the documents that you need to have.

Passport And Visas

Crossing the border from Brunei to Miri means that you are exiting the country and you need to carry your passport with you. The visa really depends on the country that you are from because each Malaysia has different visa rules for every country. As Indians we had to apply for a visa in advance.

We chose to get the e-visa which came in a couple of days and did not require us heading to an embassy and submitting our passports. Check and see which option is the best for you. The same goes for people who are crossing over from Malaysia to Brunei via the border. In this case, it is the visa to Brunei that you will have to look at.

Documents For The Car

Ordinarily crossing into a country means just looking at your own documents. In this case however you need to register your car because you are taking it across the border. Luckily it isn’t expensive. In fact, it is free!

All you need to do is head to the official website  and enter the details. Print the final form and carry it with you. If you are travelling in a rental car, make sure that you carry the rental agreement in addition to your car insurance copy.

Best Time To Cross The Brunei-Malaysia Border

One of the things that you really have to keep in mind is what time you are crossing the Brunei-Malaysia border when heading to Miri. This is because at certain times the rush at the border crossing can be insane and you can take as long as 3 hours to cross. In fact, despite everything, we got stuck for an hour and a half on our way back.

Friday evenings apparently are really busy and so are Sunday evenings. We chose to head across early morning on a Saturday and we didn’t have to wait too long to get across. In fact, a lot of people say that Saturday is the best day to choose.

One very important reason to keep the border crossing in mind is if you are thinking of catching a flight out of the Miri airport. I know it sounds strange but many flights are cheaper from Miri and people who stay in Kuala Belait and Seria often choose to use that airport.

The border timings are from 6 am to 12 am which is something else that you may want to keep in mind.

Crossing From Brunei To Miri: The Process At The Border

Crossing the border from Brunei to Miri is remarkably simple. As you reach the check post in Brunei, you will find that the cars queue. If they don’t consider yourself extremely lucky. A toll booth is your first sign that you are close to the border. Every car pas B$3 to cross over.

Register The Car Crossing Out Of Brunei

The first booth is to scan the printed receipt you got for your car. You don’t even have to get out of the car. Don’t laminate it because the plastic doesn’t allow the paper to scan properly.

Brunei Customs

With that done you then head to the customs counter. Here, your passport is stamped as you exit the country. Again, you don’t need to step out of the car. Just hand over the passports of everyone in the car. It is stamped and handed back.

Once the customs at Brunei is done, there is a small section where you can catch a bite to eat or visit the restrooms if required.

Register The Car Entering Malaysia

Here Shawn had to get down, fill a form and was given a printed receipt for the car. The receipt is valid for 3 months and you just get it stamped every time you cross. Note that this receipt is linked to your passport and if you drive a rental car, you should not hand it over to the rental company.

Malaysia Customs

The last part of the process is clearing the Malaysian customs. All you need to do is produce your visa and passport, get your entrance stamped and you are done.

That is how easy it is to cross from Brunei to Miri, Malaysia via car. In fact, I would say that the only stressful thing of the entire experience is if you get stuck in peak hour queues. It took us an hour and a half when getting back on Sunday evening, but I have heard that it can get even worse so plan accordingly.

Miri To Brunei By Tour

You can do the whole thing in reverse. If you aren’t confident about driving across the border and exploring Brunei then think about taking a tour from Miri to Brunei. This way you can explore Brunei in a day. Yes! A whole new country!

Brunei is pretty small. Sure it has some really cool natural forests . If you really want to hit the highlights then all you have to do is visit Bandar! That can easily be done in a day trip. You’ll also get to visit the Empire Country Club which is the most luxurious spot in Brunei!

Let’s not forget about Kampong Ayer and Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque!

Sarawak travel itinerary

I recently returned from a nine-day, eight-night holiday in Northern Sarawak, and here is our Sarawak travel guide.

This article is the summary of the itinerary.  Besides, we wrote separate blog posts about Miri, Mulu Cave, Niah Caves, Bario, and Brunei, which you can read for more detailed information with the link provided in the respective section. We also created videos at each location, which you can watch on YouTube by following the link at the end of each blog post. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive guide with written and visual details to plan your trip to this region.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the specifics of our journey.

How did we plan our Sarawak travel itinerary?

We planned our trip in March earlier this year when we were aimlessly wandering at the Matta Fair held in Kuala Lumpur. Initially, we considered taking a holiday in Sarawak, including Kuching and Miri. However, we ended up at Brighton Travel & Tour’s booth, which specializes in inbound Sarawak travel. Wilson, the owner, informed us that the distance between Kuching and Miri is too far, and the places worth visiting are scattered.

brunei day tour from miri

Wilson showed us a map of Sarawak and suggested that we focus on Northern Sarawak this time. He recommended that we make another trip to Kuching and the surrounding areas on a separate occasion. After some discussion, we agreed to a bespoke itinerary that included Miri, Mulu, Niah, Bario, and Brunei.

Dear cave at Mulu Caves

Bario was particularly intriguing to us as Wilson mentioned that the food, scenery, and the Kelabit culture were all exceptional. However, getting there proved challenging due to the airport’s short airstrip. Only MasWings’ Twin Otter plane with a capacity of 18 passengers would be allowed to land at Bario airport. Additionally, only nine passengers were permitted to board the flight according to the present regulation. He had to secure our return air tickets before our finalized itinerary.

Beautiful sscneary at Bario

Below is the itinerary for our recent holiday. This itinerary summarizes all the places we visited, including a day trip to Brunei. We scheduled only a few activities daily and took time to rest and relax in the hotel.

Day 1- Miri city tour

  • Arrival at Miri
  • Malaysia’s 1st oil well, the Grand Old Lady, located at Canada Hill.
  • Tua Pek Kong Temple
  • Local Handicraft & Souvenir Centre
  • Miri City Hall
  • Coco Cabana
  • Transfer to Imperial Hotel

Miri Waterfront (10)-01s

We flew from Kuala Lumpur and arrived in Miri by noon. We were excited to explore Miri City with our guide, Andy. He took us to all the places according to our itinerary, and we had a great time.

The weather was sunny, and we particularly enjoyed visiting Tamu Khas and Canada Hill. If you plan on doing a city tour, I recommend wearing a hat or cap and applying sunscreen as needed.

Try tarap at Tamu

The highlight of the day was watching the sunset at Coco Cabana. The temperature had cooled down, and there was a nice breeze. This beachfront spot offers an unobstructed view of the sunset over the sea, which is truly beautiful.

Day 2 – One-day tour in Brunei

  • Pick up at the hotel and head to Bandar Seri Begawan.
  • Photo stop at The Billionth Barrel Monument
  • Visit the Empire Hotel of Brunei
  • Royal Regalia, which houses the Coronation and Silver Jubilee Chariot
  • Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which is one of the most magnificent mosques in South East Asia
  • Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge
  • Jame Asr Mosque, which is Brunei’s National Mosque and Brunei Museum
  • Photo stop at Kampong Ayer, the “Venice of The East”
  • Transfer back to Miri

Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque (75)-01s

Our Sarawak travel itinerary includes a detour to Brunei on the second day of our trip.  Although it’s advisable to stay overnight, we opted for a day trip due to our tight schedule. We started early in the morning to make the most of our time.

Billionth Barrel Monument (5)-01

Our focus in Brunei was mainly on the grandeur of the buildings and the breathtaking mosque. We also visited the museum to learn about the royal family’s history. However, the most fascinating part of the trip was visiting the water village. We would love to hear what caught your attention the most during your visit to Brunei!

Kampong Ayer

Day 3- Exploring Bario

  • Transfer to Miri Airport – arrival at Bario – transfer to local homestay for check-in.
  • Visit the ‘salt spring’ to witness the Kelabit way of producing mountain salt.
  • Tosari Farm, Pa’ Ukat, Bario
  • Transfer back to homestay with a cultural performance by the Kelapit people.

brunei day tour from miri

During our third day of the holiday, we headed towards Bario, the most captivating part of the trip.

Boarding the small Twin Otter plane, which had only 18 seats, was an experience. However, only nine passengers could board at a time due to aviation regulations. The flight was at a low altitude, providing us with a breathtaking view of the mountains and the sea of clouds. The airport was a simple building with a single runway, and all the processes, ranging from ticketing to luggage claims, were handled manually.

Twin Otter plane

Aside from the flight experience, the cultural performance was the highlight of our day. Usually, I am not a fan of cultural performances, but the performers invited us to dance and play games as if we were part of their family.

dinner-and-dance-91-01S

They didn’t treat us like guests or tourists, which created a magical atmosphere that allowed us to feel at ease and immerse ourselves in the cultural performance.

Day 4- Visiting the longhouse

  • Twin Pioneer Wreck, Bario
  • Pa’Ramapuh Waterfall
  • Visit Bario Asal Lembaa Long House

visit village (24)-01s, Sarawak travel guide

We woke up early at Nancy Harris Guesthouse and were greeted by stunning views of paddy fields, misty mountains, and the constant crowing of roosters. Since we had free time in the morning, we took the opportunity to capture some aerial shots with our drone. We took photographs of the scenic surroundings, especially the Twin Pioneer Wreck, located right next to our guesthouse.

Later, we decided to go on a hike to Pa’Ramapuh Waterfall. It took us over an hour to reach, but the breathtaking views and peaceful surroundings made it worth it. We were the only ones there and enjoyed the tranquility.

Waterfalls-123-01s

The highlight of our trip to Baro was the visit to the longhouse. Our guesthouse owner, Nancy, took us to meet her relatives who lived in the longhouse. She explained their culture and practices and patiently answered all our questions. They also showed us their original kitchen, which they have used for decades.

Day 5 – Met a Kelapit lady with long earlobes

  • Street food at the town center
  • Visit Kampung Arur Dalan at the foothill of Bario’s famous Prayer Mountain.
  • Transfer to Bario Airport – Arrival Miri – Lunch – Check in at Imperial Hotel

Kelabit lady with long earlobes, Sarawak travel guide

Today, we planned to return to Miri by flight. However, before leaving, we decided to explore the town center and indulge in local delicacies like the famous Bario laksa. Later, we headed to Kampung Arur Dalan, near the renowned Prayer Mountain. Due to time constraints, we couldn’t hike up the mountain, so we took a stroll around the village with some friendly locals.

visit-village-25-01s, Sarawak travel guide

Although we didn’t encounter many Kelabit ladies with long earlobes, we were fortunate to meet one who was delighted to take some pictures with us.

The rest of the day was spent traveling back to Miri and relaxing for the evening.

Check out our article:  Bario- best things to do at Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak.

Day 6- Exploring Niah Cave

  • Pick up at Hotel – Niah National Park
  • Registration at Park Headquarters
  • Proceed with an 800m walk to the Trader’s Cave, Great Cave, and Moon Cave, Painting Cave.
  • Local ethnic lunch to be served in the longhouse
  • Walk back to the Park Headquarters on the same plank walk
  • Peliau Beach
  • Transfer back to the Hotel.

Trader Cave

Today is ideal to explore the famous Niah Cave, about an hour’s drive from Miri. We explored the Traders Cave, Great Cave, Gan Kira, and Painting Cave during our visit.

The most awe-inspiring sight we witnessed was the sunlight shining through a hole in the large chamber at the Great Cave. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the magnificent scene if you are there at the right time.

Moon Cave, Sarawak travel guide

The Painting Cave is a sight to behold, and we were so captivated by its beauty that we took numerous photos of the paintings inside. It is fenced off to preserve the paintings, but fortunately, I captured some fantastic shots and video clips.

For lunch, we enjoy a delicious meal at the longhouse with an Iban family.

Iban longhouse

Afterward, we headed to Peliau Beach to witness a mesmerizing sunset scene.

Day 7 – Exploring Mulu Caves

  • Check out from Hotel – Transfer to Miri Airport
  • Departure to Mulu – Transfer to Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa
  • Proceed for a plank walk to reach Lang’s & Deer Cave
  • After exploring the caves, proceed to the bat observatory to observe the magnificent bat exodus
  • Return journey on the same plank walk to Park Headquarters – Transfer back to accommodation for dinner and overnight

on the way to Lang cave

I’ve just realized that this Sarawak travel itinerary has so many flights in such a short time. We’re boarding planes three times a week, from large Boeing 737s to small Twin Otters.

This morning, we went to the airport again and headed to Mulu, where we’ll stay for two nights. Today, we visited Langs and Deer caves. We particularly loved Langs Cave’s rock formations and Deer Cave’s incredible water curtain.

water curtain in Dear Cave, Sarawak travel guide

It was drizzling in the evening when we observed the bats, but fortunately, it wasn’t a downpour. The bats still emerged from the cave in flocks, forming various patterns.

Day 8- Exploring Mulu Caves

  • After breakfast, proceed by longboat to Batu Bungan – Penan Settlement to observe the culture & lifestyles of the Penan tribe. There is also various selection of handicrafts on display for sale.
  • Continue the journey by longboat to Wind Cave & Clearwater Cave.
  • Lunch at Mulu Cafe
  • Proceed back to the resort for dinner and overnight

Wind Cave, Sarawak travel guide

Our Sarawak travel is coming to an end, as we will be flying back to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Today, we visited the Penan Handicraft Center to buy some handmade items and learn how to use the blowpipe.

After that, we traveled upstream along the river to explore the Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Visiting these caves brought back memories of when I was here twenty years ago. I vividly recall the underground river, but the rest of the cave eludes me.

Day 9- Return Home

Sarawak travel guide

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Mulu Airport for your flight departure back to Miri.

We ended our Sarawak travel, which included visiting Miri, Bario, Mulu, and Niah and crossing the border for a day trip in Brunei. We thank Wilson from Brighten Travel and Tours for arranging this wonderful trip. We plan to return to Sarawak before the end of the year and explore Kuching and its surroundings.

We hope this Sarawak travel guide will help you plan your trip there. Until then, keep exploring, discovering, and enjoying nature and culture.
