2023 PGA Tour schedule: The LIV money question, majors, key dates and changes

The 2023 PGA Tour schedule features 44 regular-season events and $428.6 million in official prize money, the PGA announced Monday. Another $145 million is available in bonuses.

The schedule includes six out of eight invitationals (the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, Players Championship and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play) with significantly increased prize money.

As previously announced, the FedExCup Playoffs will include a smaller field than in years past. For the first round, 70 players will earn a start at the St. Jude Championship, then 50 players will advance to the BMW Championship and 30 to the TOUR Championship.

The 2023 schedule marks the last before the Tour transitions to a calendar-year season beginning in 2024.

The changes come shortly about LIV Golf announced an expansion to 14 tournaments, with $405 million available in prize money, for 2023.

Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 PGA Tour schedule.

When are the majors?

Did any tournaments get a bad draw.

Organizers for the Travelers Championships, Rocket Mortgage Classic and John Deere Classic might be chasing player commitments in Hunger Games-style campaigns next spring. Those three events, in order from late June through early July, follow a stretch of play beginning in early May going from the Wells Fargo Championship to the Byron Nelson to the PGA Championship (Oak Hill) to the Charles Schwab to the Memorial to the Canadian Open to the U.S. Open (Los Angeles Country Club). All those are desirable starts and, in theory, more highly regarded than the Travelers, Rocket Mortgage or John Deere.

And immediately followed that Travelers-RMC-John Deere stretch? It’s the Scottish Open and and the Open Championship (Royal Liverpool).

How many events of those three squeezed-in tournament starts are high-profile players reasonably make? It’s easy to imagine some guys skipping two of them.

Of the three, though, the Rocket Mortgage faces an entirely separate issue. The tournament drew the Fourth of July slot on the calendar. As any Michigander will tell you, the southeast quadrant of the state often looks like an empty parking lot on the holiday weekend. The Rocket Mortgage previously landed on the Fourth of July in both 2020 and 2021. In 2020, no spectators were permitted, so it was moot. (But even still, that field included only 20 of the top 100 players in the world .) In 2021, attendance numbers dropped off from the inaugural event in 2019 (June 27-30). So, now, in 2023, the Rocket Mortgage will not only have to navigate a crowded window for players, but also a tough calendar for its locals.

Why did the money increase so much?

The gut reaction is, “Oh, LIV Golf arrived and suddenly the PGA Tour is opening up the purse strings. Hypocrisy!!”

Well, yeah, it’s not remotely that simple. Was the PGA Tour forced to bulk up prize money in response to LIV? Absolutely. No choice.

The fact is, though, purse increases were coming regardless. Would they have been to this extent? Would the eight invitationals increase their purses to range from $15 to $25 million? We don’t know. However, when the tour signed its new nine-year, $7 billion media rights agreement with CBS Sports, NBC Sports and ESPN back in March 2020, it wasn’t scheduled to go into effect until 2022 and wouldn’t have been reflected in 2021-22 season numbers. Now that the tour has arrived at the 2022-23 slate, the numbers are spiking. This was coming, LIV or no LIV.

The 2022-23 PGA TOUR schedule is here. • Condensed #FedExCup Playoffs fields (From 125/70/30 to 70/50/30) • Elevated purses for invitationals ($15 to $25 million) • Bonus pools increase to $145 million overall More details below ⬇️ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 1, 2022

As far as the bonus pool goes, $145 million is available in 2022-23. The breakdown: $75 million for the FedEx Cup, $20 million for the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 and $50 million for the Player Impact Program.

All told, the purses money available for non-majors in 2022-23 comes to a total pot of $428.6 million, not including bonus money. That’s an increase of $68.3 million in non-major purses from 2022 to 2023.

Is extra money actually going to make a difference?

Good question. Probably not.

LIV Golf’s money cannon still dwarfs what the PGA Tour is offering. Even more, if the Saudi Public Investment Fund wants to put up another $2 billion into this asset to throw more outrageous figures at players — hey, would Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth or Justin Thomas or Jon Rahm turn down $500 million? How about $750 million? A billion? Point is, if the PIF wants to make that kind of money available and LIV organizers want to put forth those kind of offers, they can do it and there’s nothing the PGA Tour can do to compete with those sums.

Does more tour money makes it easier for those who say no to LIV to feel reasonably sensible? Maybe. But at the end of the day, the only reason anyone is staying on the PGA Tour instead of defecting to LIV is because they’re already wealthy and that’s where they want to play.

Why did the number of players who make the postseason shrink?

A few reasons, but most interesting to me is this 1) adds some drama of more established players potentially falling outside the top 70 and having to compete to retain their tour status and 2) adds some legitimate meaning to those events in the fall series for fans. Whereas there was little reason to flip over from football in previous years, now there’s at least a reason to check in.

Best week on the tour?

Pga tour releases 2023 fall schedule, where players will battle for status.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

The PGA Tour unveiled its reimagined fall schedule on Wednesday with many of the same stops but a dramatically adjusted focus.

The fall will feature seven events, down from nine last year, beginning two weeks after the Tour Championship:

  • Sept. 14-17: Fortinet Championship
  • Oct. 5-8: Sanderson Farms Championship
  • Oct. 12-15: Shriners Children’s Open
  • Oct. 19-22: Zozo Championship (Japan)
  • Nov. 2-5: World Wide Technology Championship
  • Nov. 9-12: Butterfield Bermuda Championship
  • Nov. 16-19: RSM Classic

Gone from the fall schedule are the CJ Cup and the Houston Open, the latter of which, according to various reports, is moving to the regular Tour schedule.

The fall will primarily provide players who finish 51 st and beyond on the previous season’s FedExCup points list a chance to improve their status for the next year and provide a pathway into designated events. Points earned through the regular season and playoff events will carry over into what is being called FedExCup Fall.

Players who finish Nos. 51-70 in points upon the conclusion of the previous season – after the regular season and playoffs – will have full status for the next season. But their play in the fall could lead to extra opportunities. Nos. 51-60 in FedExCup points after the fall series concludes will earn spots into the first two designated events (following the Sentry TOC) of the new season.

Those who finish between Nos. 71-125 in the previous season will need to play the fall events to maintain their status for the next season. Nos. 126 and above can also play their ways in during the fall, with 125 still being the fully exempt cutoff.

Players who finish the season in the top 50 can play in the fall as well. They will not earn any FedExCup points, because their positions are already locked for the upcoming year, but can still claim everything else – money, OWGR points, exemptions, improved eligibility through a win.

A victory in the fall will be worth 500 FedExCup points and will earn a player a spot in Maui the following year, as well as an invitation to the Masters. But, unlike in wraparound seasons, fall points will not carry over into the new year.

Starting next year, the designated events will be limited-field (70-80 players), no-cut tournaments. Those events (not counting the four majors and The Players) are the three “player-hosted” invitationals (Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial), the Sentry Tournament of Champions and four other events still to be determined.

The fields for each of those eight events will include:

  • Top 50 from the prior season’s FEC points list
  • Top 10 from the current year’s FEC points list (not otherwise eligible)
  • Top 5 from the current year’s FEC points list through each “swing” (not otherwise eligible)
  • Additional qualifiers (tournament winners, top 30 OWGR, four sponsor exemptions; top 10 from fall get into the first two post-Sentry designated events)

A “swing” is what the Tour considers consecutive full-field events between designated events. The Tour anticipates two to three full-field events to be contested in a row, in which the top 5 FEC points earners (not otherwise eligible) during that section would qualify for the next designated event.

Gordon sargent will defer his pga tour card, return to vanderbilt for senior season, share this article.

Professional golf is going to have to wait a bit longer to see one of the game’s premier amateur players take his next step.

Gordon Sargent announced Thursday he was returning to Vanderbilt for his senior year. The news may come as a surprise to some, considering Sargent has a PGA Tour card secured thanks to PGA Tour University Accelerated, but he’ll defer his status until next summer, meaning the amateur game gets another year with one of its best players.

“It’s been an honor to represent this university alongside my teammates and coaches, and I look forward to continuing to compete – and further my education – at this amazing place that has given so much to me,” Sargent said in a release. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me on this journey, and I’m excited for this final chapter at Vanderbilt.”

Sargent, from Birmingham, Alabama, is one of the game’s longest hitters with his astounding speed. He earned the final of 20 points in the PGA Tour U Accelerated program in the fall when he was on the United States team at the World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi.

As of now, Sargent is the only player who has earned 20 points via PGA Tour U Accelerated since the program was introduced two years ago .

Sargent, No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, won the NCAA individual championship as a freshman and went 4-0 at the Walker Cup last fall at St. Andrews. He also earned low amateur honors at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

This year, Sargent has one win, coming in his latest start at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The 2023-23 Golfweek Player of the Year has posted four top-five finishes during the 2023-24 season and holds a scoring average of 69.92 through eight collegiate tournaments.

By deferring his PGA Tour card, Sargent will be able to take it following the 2025 NCAA Championship. He will have full status through 2026 once he turns professional.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Third-round tee times have been released for the Masters. Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau will play in Saturday’s final group at 2:45 p.m. ET.

Scottie Scheffler, who’s tied for the lead with Homa and DeChambeau, will tee off 10 minutes earlier alongside Nicolai Højgaard, the Dane who was the youngest player in last year’s Ryder Cup and closed 2023 by winning the DP World Tour Championship. Scheffler is seeking his second Masters win in the last three years. He recently won his second consecutive PLAYERS Championship.

Cameron Davis, a member of the 2022 International Presidents Cup Team, will tee off alongside Collin Morikawa in the third-to-last group. They’ll be preceded by Ludvig Åberg and Matthieu Pavon, the Frenchman who won this year’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Other notable groups include:

  • Tiger Woods, Tyrrell Hatton (12:45 p.m. Eastern). The five-time Masters champion Woods has set the record with his 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National, and he now seeks a climb up the leaderboard for a chance to match Jack Nicklaus' record six green jackets come Sunday. Woods trails the lead by seven strokes into Saturday.
  • Patrick Cantlay, Neal Shipley (a) (12:15 p.m.) Ohio State's Shipley has secured low amateur honors as the only of five amateurs in the field to make the cut. He'll play alongside world No. 7 Cantlay, who is still seeking his first major title. Cantlay is eight off the lead, with Shipley nine back.
  • Akshay Bhatia, Shane Lowry (12:05 p.m.) Fresh off a victory at last week's Valero Texas Open that secured his first Masters berth, Bhatia kept the good times rolling with rounds of 72-75 to make the cut with three strokes to spare. He'll play alongside a popular Irishman in Lowry, also nine off the lead into the weekend.
  • Sahith Theegala, Phil Mickelson (11:25 a.m.). Perhaps two of golf's most creative shotmakers and California natives, both enter the weekend at 4-over 146, trailing the lead by 10 strokes. Theegala finished ninth last year in his Masters debut; Mickelson is a three-time Masters champion.
  • Joaquin Niemann, Min Woo Lee (11:05 a.m.). The effervescent Lee has quickly become one of the game's more colorful characters, and he carded 74-74 to make the cut despite a broken finger that he suffered in a gym accident less than two weeks ago. Lee and Niemann both trail the lead by 10 into Saturday.
  • Rory McIlroy, Camilo Villegas (10:55 a.m.). Many eyes will be on McIlroy early Saturday, which he'll begin 10 strokes back, as he seeks to make a heroic run toward his first green jacket, which would complete the career Grand Slam. He'll play alongside a popular Colombian in Villegas, who won last fall's Butterfield Bermuda Championship to earn his first Masters berth since 2015.

Here are the full tee times for Saturday's third round:

2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the corales puntacana championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

alex-noren-pga-usatsi.jpg

The seventh PGA Tour iteration of the Corales Puntacana Championship will begin on Thursday at Corales Golf Club in the Dominican Republic. The first two years of the event were played as Web.com Tour tournaments, but it was elevated to the PGA Tour beginning in 2018. Defending champion Matt Wallace is not in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship field, but Nicolai Hojgaard is returning after a runner-up finish last year. Hojgaard turned heads at the Masters last week when he was briefly tied for the lead in the third round.

However, Alex Noren is the 12-1 favorite in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds, followed by Hojgaard (14-1) and Billy Horschel (20-1). There are only four golfers listed inside of 30-1 on the PGA odds board, so are there any longshots you should target with your 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship bets? Before locking in your 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Corales Puntacana Championship 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship: Noren, who is the favorite has finished inside the top 20 in four straight PGA tournaments, struggles this week and barely cracks the top five. Noren played in his first PGA Tour event in 2008, and he has played in 171 PGA tournaments overall. However, he is still seeking his first victory, so it is difficult to justify his position as the favorite on the odds board this week.

Noren has struggled with his driver this season, ranked outside the top 100 in total driving and driving distance. He also sits outside the top 150 on the PGA Tour in putting average and one-putt percentage, so he would need to make drastic improvements during all four rounds this week. While this is a weaker field due to the RBC Heritage, the model has identified better golfers to back in the Dominican Republic.

Another surprise: Victor Perez, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The Frenchman finished inside the top 15 at the PGA Championship last year before making the cut at the Open Championship during a successful 2023 season.

Perez has seven professional wins, including three on the European Tour, and he is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory. The 31-year-old finished T3 in the Puerto Rico Open last month before cracking the top 20 at the Texas Children's Houston Open. He has proven he can beat up on weak fields and he ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage (71.8), making him an excellent longshot pick this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship picks

The model is also targeting five other golfers with odds of 30-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
