Want to join fellow Canadian nurses working in the USA?

Travel nursing from Canada to the US is easier than you might think. At Aya Healthcare, we handle the paperwork so you can focus on what you do best: taking care of patients. We’ll take care of everything else.

And we mean EVERYTHING! We don’t think coming to the USA should cost you a lot of time or money. That’s why we offer this concierge service to make things as easy as possible.

Become a Canadian Nurse Working in the USA

International travel nursing can be intimidating. That’s why we walk you through each step of the process.

What’s the timeline for travel nursing from Canada? The short answer is around six months (with Aya). That’s around half the time it would take you to do it on your own or go through other Canadian travel nursing agencies. Our experts walk you through the process and review your paperwork for errors before you submit. We get you there faster by removing the barriers that slow your application.

As a Canadian nurse moving to the USA, here’s what you’ll need:

VisaScreen certification through CGFNS

CGFNS evaluates your education/credentials and verifies that you can work in the US by granting the VisaScreen certification. If you qualify for our licensure project (see right) we'll reimburse your $540 application fee once you start working. And more good news ... we can take care of the following requirements simultaneously. Again, the ENTIRE process should only take six months.

US State License

You’ve applied for VisaScreen certification. Great job! Now you need a US state license (we’ll pay for this too if you qualify). This can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to be issued. Again, we can work on your license while you’re waiting for your VisaScreen certification.

Book a travel nursing job!

Now, you’re ready to go. Because you’re smart, you’re working with an experienced Canadian travel nursing agency. As we say in the US, “this isn’t our first rodeo.” We have deep relationships with facilities across the country. We know which healthcare facilities will book you with some of the paperwork pending.

Border crossing documentation

Congrats! You got a job and it’s time to join your fellow Canadian travel nurses in the USA! We’ll walk you through what you need to bring. Gather that documentation and cross the border within 10 days of your contract start date. Request TN Status (AKA the TN Visa for Canadian nurses) at the border. Again, we’ll help with this!

Apply for a US Social Security Number

Once you’re in the US, it’s time to apply for your social security number. This number allows you to work in any state. You should get your social security card in the mail in 4-8 weeks. This won’t affect your timeline. You can work at certain facilities while waiting for your social security card.

(Offices are currently closed due to COVID-19. This doesn't affect your ability to work.)

If any of this sounds complicated, don’t worry! We send you detailed instructions for each step of the process, track the status of your application and provide updates along the way. We have an expert licensing team dedicated to Canadian nurses. They can answer questions and provide guidance. Contact them anytime!

Start Travel Nursing in the US Today!

Here’s what it takes to qualify for Aya’s licensing project:

  • RN degree from a Canadian nursing program
  • At least 2 years of experience in your specialty
  • Proof you passed the NCLEX

If you don't fit these criteria, don't be discouraged. Get in touch with us, we're still happy to help any way we can.

Aya Healthcare is the preferred supplier at multiple facilities in North Carolina, New York, Minnesota, Washington and Texas. We can get you licensed quickly in those states. While you’re working your first contract (which will likely last 13 weeks or longer) we’ll help you get licensed in any state of your choosing!

We have a deep understanding of the units we staff and of fluctuations in census across the country. Essentially, we know when facilities will need RNs. We can book you assignments months in advance and ensure the units you choose are a good fit for your skill set and personality. These career planning services are just part of the package you get with Aya Healthcare.

Aya is your travel insurance policy.

International travel nursing opens the door to many wonderful experiences, but anytime you travel you may encounter bumps in the road. Things happen. When they do, we’ll be there.

We have 9,000+ open RN assignments across the country. (If you ever have an assignment cancelled, we’ll find you another #JobSecurity!) If you miss your flight and get stranded at the airport, if you have a clinical issue on the job, if you’re sick and can’t make a shift … never fear. We’ll be here. 24/7. We’ll send you an emergency contact number so you can reach us at all hours of the day or night.

Don’t want to go it alone? No problem. Bring a friend (or friends). If you ever get lonely as a Canadian nurse working in the USA, refer someone! With our smooth, easy process for getting you ready to work stateside, feel free to entice as many Canadian RNs as you’d like to join you on your journey.

Pretty easy if you stick with us. We’ll walk you through the process and make sure everything goes smoothly. We have an expert team who’ve helped hundreds of Canadian nurses working in the USA. They can help you too.

In general, you’ll make more as a travel nurse in the United States than as a permanent nurse in Canada. Pay depends on where you go: states and specialties pay differently. Your recruiter (we’ll assign you one when you apply) can help you maximize your pay!

Good question! That’s up to you. You can either choose housing that we provide or take a housing stipend and find a place on your own. If you prefer the stipend, our housing team can provide you with resources that should make your search easy and, dare we say, enjoyable?

We’d love to! We bet we’ve answered a lot of your questions higher up on this page. But, if you have a question that isn’t answered on this page or would just like to talk things through, contact us and we’ll be in touch.

Aya Healthcare will provide your TN letter if you book an assignment with us. Travel nursing in the US here you come!

We might be biased, but we think you’ve found us. 😊 Check out our reviews if you’re looking for external corroboration that we’re one of the best travel nursing agencies for Canadian nurses.

You’ll have an entire Aya support team to help with each step of your journey. Your recruiter is your first point of contact (he or she is your guru, your guide.) We’ll also assign you housing , payroll and licensing experts — plus a travel experience specialist to make sure you’re happy with everything, down to the tiniest details of your assignment.

There are many reasons Canadian nurses work in the USA. Some are looking to expand their clinical skill set by working in new facilities, others want to travel to new and exciting places and some are looking to make great money. Some want all the above! Whatever your reasons for international travel nursing, we’re more than happy to help.

Challenges of Travel Nursing in Canada

Travel nursing is an exciting career that allows healthcare professionals to explore different cities and regions while providing essential care. However, like any job, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. In this blog section, we will explore some of the challenges that travel nurses may face in Canada.

A. Frequent relocations and adjusting to new environments

  • Travel nurses are constantly on the move, relocating to different healthcare facilities in various cities or provinces.
  • Each new location brings with it the need to adapt to a different work environment and familiarize oneself with new policies and procedures.
  • These frequent relocations can be mentally and emotionally draining, as nurses have to constantly adjust to new surroundings, making new friends, and establishing a support network.

B. Limited job security and stability

  • Travel nursing contracts usually have a fixed duration, ranging from a few weeks to several months.
  • Once a contract ends, nurses may face uncertainty and have to look for a new assignment.
  • This lack of job security can be stressful, especially if nurses have financial obligations or are the primary earners in their families.

C. Potential lack of support from colleagues and familiarity

  • Travel nurses may not have the same level of rapport with colleagues and may miss the familiar faces and comfort of working in a long-term position.
  • This lack of support and familiarity can affect the overall work experience and make it harder to cope with the demands of the job.

It’s important for travel nurses to remember that challenges are a part of any job, and they can be overcome with the right mindset and support. By focusing on the positives and embracing the adventure, travel nursing in Canada can be an incredibly rewarding career choice.

In short, the challenges faced by travel nurses in Canada include frequent relocations, limited job security, and potential lack of support. However, by taking proactive steps and maintaining a positive attitude, travel nurses can navigate these challenges and thrive in their careers.

“I'm very happy I decided to take a contract with Northern Med! The staff that I have interacted with have all been so kind and they really do care and make an effort to check in with you. Whenever issues came up, they were quick to address the situation. I loved Nova Scotia so much that I actually extended my contract! "I remember always being told my full-time line was the end goal as a new nurse, yet I still felt there had to be more out there for me."

“One year ago, I took a leap of faith. I remember always being told my full-time line was the end goal as a new nurse, yet I still felt there had to be more out there for me. I quit my line, gave away my belongings, signed my first contract and haven’t looked back since. Life has always been good to me, but this season of full-time travel nursing has been unparalleled. Big thanks to NMC for being such a supportive agency and for proving that a fulfilling career and a beautiful adventurous life should exist simultaneously. We don’t need a vacation from a life like this.”

How to Become a Travel Nurse in Canada

The travel nursing industry is growing yearly, and it's a great way to gain experience in your field. Not only do you get to see new places, but you also meet new people along the way who share your interests.

Travel nursing is a great opportunity for nurses and other healthcare professionals to work in different places and experience new cultures. This can be especially helpful if you're thinking of relocating or getting away from negative situations.

Canada has a reputation as a leader in healthcare innovation, so it's no surprise that many travel nurses are interested in working there.

What is a Travel Nurse?

A travel nurse is a registered nurse that travels from one facility to another for work. Although the occupation of a travel nurse is not new, its popularity has increased in recent years due to the growing need for qualified nurses and reduced funding for healthcare facilities.

Being called a travel nurse is not just a nickname; being able to fly from place to place is one of their most important job requirements!

canada travel nurse

What Do Travel Nurses do?

Travel nursing is an exciting career that allows you to work in different healthcare facilities and communities across the country for a period of time. You’ll be part of a team that assists patients with their medical needs, from providing care at hospitals to performing home visits.

Travel nurses are responsible for their own expenses during travel such as transportation and housing, but they also receive an hourly wage while on assignment.

The wages can vary depending on what region they’re employed in, so it's important to research this information before starting your travel nursing career.

How do you become a travel nurse in Canada?

If you're considering travel nursing as a way to earn extra income, it's important to understand the job market and the types of travel nurses available. The Canadian healthcare industry is growing rapidly and there are many opportunities for those who want to become a nurse with benefits.

Travel nurses can work in many different areas of Canada, including Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec. According to nurseavenue.com (2021), "Most Canadian travel nursing assignments require that you have a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree from an accredited North American college or university. Travel nurses must obtain a license for the province in which they plan to work, which means passing an exam and paying the required fee.

How much do travel nurses make in Canada?

The salary you earn as a travel nurse varies depending on where you are, but it can be higher than what local nurses make. The career outlook is good and the work environment is rewarding in itself. How Can International Nurses Become A RN Or PRN In Ontario?

Travel nurses in Canada earn a higher salary than their counterparts in the United States. According to travel.com (2023), the average travel nurse's salary in Canada is $105,404 per year or $54.05 per hour . Entry-level positions start at $81,715 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $133,508 per year. Highest Paying Cities For Nurses In Canada

The amount depends on your location and experience level:

  • Nurses with less than two years of experience can expect to make between $40-45 per hour (CAD).
  • Nurses with three to five years of experience can expect between $55-60 per hour (CAD).
  • Nurses who have worked for more than five years can earn up to $70 per hour (CAD).

Is travel nursing hard?

Travel nursing is challenging and exciting. You'll travel across the country or around the world while taking care of patients' healthcare needs. Along with that challenge comes a reward: travel nurses often make six figures in their first year on the job!

Travel nursing is a great way to see the world, earn good money, and meet new people. This is a great opportunity for people who are interested in travel nursing. It's also a great opportunity for people who want to work in Canada. But if you don't like either of those things, then this isn't going to be the best fit for you. Additionally, if you don't have the right personality, you may want to look into other careers.

travel nursing

How many hours do travel nurses work a day?

Travel nurses work 24-hour shifts, but the length of their shifts varies depending on the hospital and location.

40 hours per week are commonly worked by travel nurses in one of the following shift patterns:

  • 5 x 8-hour shifts
  • 4 x 10-hour shifts
  • 3 x 12-hour shifts

Travel nurses are typically on call during their time off but not always; so it's important to ask your recruiter what you can expect before accepting or declining any job offers. This can help ensure that you're not surprised by unexpected requirements during your travels! Keep in mind that hours and shifts will constantly vary based on the policies of their employer because travel nurses will work at multiple different hospitals throughout the course of their careers. Travel nurses need to be adaptable and willing to adjust.

Land your first travel nurse job today.

Send your resume to as many agencies as possible.

This may seem obvious, but it's important to remember that there are many more travel nursing agencies than there are jobs, so be sure to send out your resume and cover letter in such a way that doesn't cost any money (email is free). You will have a better chance of getting a job if you apply for more positions at once, rather than waiting around for one specific position. A diligent traveller can send out 10 applications per day!

Be patient; it takes time to get a job

You're going to have to wait a while before you hear back from any of the companies who have accepted your application—and even longer before you land an assignment! Most travel nurses say that it takes several months before they receive their first assignment offer from an agency or hospital; however, this does not mean that all hope is lost if things don't work out right away—the average length of time between submitting an application and being hired is three months! So relax and keep sending those resumes until something happens! You'll eventually find success if you keep working hard enough (and long enough).

Be flexible with regard to assignments' start dates If possible

Especially early on in your career as a travel nurse, be willing to accept short-term assignments anywhere in the world! This will help expand everyone's horizons while simultaneously improving our understanding of other cultures through direct interactions with foreign nationals whose perspectives might differ greatly from ours here at home...And who knows? An assignment could turn into something much longer-lasting than expected!

If you’re looking to become a travel nurse, the first step is to fill out our free application. We have hundreds of jobs available across Canada and are always looking for new and experienced nurses who want to work on the go. If this sounds like you, then go ahead and get started!

No-poaching clause means travel nurses can't accept jobs in N.L.

Union president says some agency nurses have been contractually prohibited from accepting permanent jobs.

A woman wearing a floral patterned shirt and black sweater stands in an office space. There are two posters on the wall, both advertising education for registered nurses.

Social Sharing

The Registered Nurses' Union of Newfoundland and Labrador is appalled that the provincial government included a clause in private-agency nursing contracts preventing some nurses from staying and working in the province's public health-care system.

President Yvette Coffey said she became aware of the issue when a nurse who was employed by a private agency inquired about taking a permanent, full-time position in the public system.

"He was not allowed to take a position in Newfoundland and Labrador for upwards of 12 months after he finished his contract with the private agency," Coffey said.

After some investigation, the union discovered that were are four or five agency contracts that all have limitations between 6-12 months denying a nurse the ability to take a job in Newfoundland and Labrador's public health-care system.

One private agency's contract requires a nurse to be disconnected from a private agency for more than a year before they can work in Newfoundland and Labrador. If breached, the province pays a hefty fine.

"If one of those nurses comes and takes a job in their public health-care system, we — as a government — have to pay between $5,000 or a or full year's salary [to the private company]," Coffey said.

A blurred image of patients in a hospital waiting room.

Coffey said there is no logical rationale for restrictions that she said "handcuffs" the province from hiring nurses and nurse practitioners.

"It's appalling," she said.

When COVID-19 was raging, Coffey said she was involved in conversations with the province to bring more travel nurses here.

"I was told at that meeting that there was a clause in the contract that would prevent the agency from poaching our nurses out of the public sector, and also from poaching our graduates, our new nursing graduates, for up to a year. Nobody told me that it was also reciprocal with the company, and that we could not hire their agency nurses into our publicly funded health-care system."

Coffey noted that the province is working to recruit nurses from India, Ireland, the Philippines, but has restricted itself from hiring the people who are already here and ready to work.

Protecting the work force

Debbie Molloy, vice-president of N.L. Health Services, said when the contracts with private nursing agencies were signed peak-pandemic, the health authority's hands were tied.

"We do have contracts with a number of different agencies and they have what's called a non solicitation clause," she said.

"It actually protects us because agencies cannot hire either nurses who work with us within the province, or we actually extended that to also be students who are graduating."

Molloy said the clause is meant to ensure that N.L. Health Services maintains a healthy workforce, and that public sector workers are not recruited by private agencies.

A middle-aged, bald man in a suit and a tie stands in the foyer of an office in the west block of the confederation building in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Health Minister Tom Osborne said the contracts were drawn up and agreed upon between the health authority and private agencies, and that the health authority did the right thing by including the non-solicitation clause.

"If there wasn't some level of protection, we could potentially lose far more nurses to other provinces than we would gain," he said.

"If there wasn't a protection built into the contract to ensure that agencies did not recruit our nurses to work as agency nurses in their same position, in the same hospital, for the same community — they would drain our workforce."

Osborne said the number of nurses bound by the clause is low.

"We will be doing what we can to try and work with the agency to have them released, but that remains to be seen," he said.

According to Molloy, as of March 18 there are 357 private agency nurses working in Newfoundland and Labrador, down from 373 in February, and less than 20 of them are working in the metro St. John's area.

Many travel nurses opt for temporary assignments because of the autonomy and opportunities − not just the big boost in pay

Two people wearing personal protective equipment look at a smartphone.

Travel nurses take short-term contracts that can require long commutes or temporarily living away from home. Time and again, they have to get used to new co-workers, new protocols and new workplaces.

So why would staff nurses quit their stable jobs to become travel nurses?

Well, for one, they get bigger paychecks . But U.S. nurses have other rationales besides making more money, according to a study I conducted .

To do this research, I interviewed 27 registered nurses based in different places.

Many of the people I interviewed disclosed that they left permanent positions to combat burnout. Although they welcomed the bump in pay, travel nursing also gave them the autonomy to decide when and where to work. That autonomy allowed them to pursue personal and professional interests that were meaningful to them, and it made some of the other hassles, such as long commutes, worth it.

On top of earning more money, travel nursing “gives you an opportunity to explore different areas,” said a nurse I’ll call Cynthia, because research rules require anonymity. “When you actually live there for three months, it gives you a chance to really immerse yourself in the area and really get to know not just the touristy stuff, but really hang out with the locals and really be exposed to that area.”

Other study participants said they enjoyed the novelty and educational opportunities.

“You don’t get bored or stuck in a routine,” Michelle said. “You’re always trying to learn new policies at the new hospital that you’re in, learning about the new doctors, nursing staff, new ways of doing things, where things are located. That helps keep me from feeling burned out so quickly.”

Said Patricia: “I want to see how other operating rooms across the country do things and how they do things differently. I do learn a lot of things going from place to place.”

Man in scrubs looks out the window with some trepidation in his eyes.

Why it matters

A growing number of U.S. nurses were obtaining temporary assignments before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

But travel nursing became much more widespread in 2020, when hospitals were scrambling to keep their staffing levels high enough as millions of Americans were becoming infected with the coronavirus, straining capacity in many communities.

While compensation varies widely, the median pay of registered nurses in 2022 was US$81,220 , about 35% less than the $110,000 that registered nurses who traveled earned .

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel nurses could earn an even bigger premium . Many were paid twice as much as staff nurses.

Once the number of Americans with severe symptoms fell, that premium declined too . But there are still over 1.7 million travel nurses in the U.S. Hiring them is one of the main ways that hospitals cope with a long-term shortage of nurses .

But nurses with permanent jobs can get aggravated by this arrangement when they learn how much more travel nurses earn for doing the same work, as I found through another research project .

What other research is being done

Research supports a widely reported trend: More Americans have temporary jobs and freelance employment than in the past.

While travel nurses can help hospitals, nursing homes and doctors’ offices meet staffing needs, there are signs that patients don’t always fare as well with their care.

And a Canadian study found that when hospitals let staff nurses work part time and offer other alternative arrangements, their retention rates may rise .
