With your kids on summer vacation and your eye on Cancun, it’s common for people to wonder—is July a good time to go to Cancun in Mexico ?

July isn’t a bad time to go to Cancun per se, but it depends on the type of trip you want. Traveling to Cancun in July involves higher chances of rain (and hurricanes), seaweed, and sweltering hot weather.

The flip side is that you won’t have to squeeze your beach family beach towels between those of strangers, given that fewer people travel that time of year. Accommodation is also often more economical.

So, we’ll explore whether July is a good time to travel to Cancun from every angle to help you better determine whether it’s the best-fit destination for your family’s summer vacation.

July in Cancun: The Low Season

Although the tacos are just as delicious and the locals are just as friendly that time of year, several factors contribute to people avoiding Cancun in July. They include:

• Potential for a hurricane

We don’t want to make you feel like it’s all doom and gloom based on this list, though. Instead, there are some advantages to visiting Cancun in July. They include:

• Avoiding excessive crowds
• Lower hotel prices
• Whale sharks and sea turtles present

Of course, some families also love sweltering hot tropical climates and see this as a positive aspect.

All About Cancun’s Weather in July

Before we delve into the nitty-gritty of Cancun’s weather in July, we want to lead with this disclaimer—historical weather patterns are helpful, but there are plenty of weather anomalies that deviate from them. 

So, take what we share below as a guide, and prepare you and your family to be flexible to work your trip around the weather.

Since August 1st is historically the hottest day of the year in Cancun, you’ll experience some of the warmest weather this beach city has, especially if you travel towards the end of July.

The average high temperature is about 89 °F. It isn’t uncommon for highs to reach the low 90s, although highs above 93 °F are uncommon.

As for lows, you can reserve your jacket for use only in air-conditioned buildings, for the average low in July is 77 °F. In some cases, the temperature can drop as low as 73 °F, making it feel relatively cool. Other times, it doesn’t even break into the 70s for lows.

Generally speaking, the earlier in July you travel, the lower the highs and lows will be. But it’s all relative—July in Cancun is tank top and flip flop weather all the way.

The ocean won’t offer you much respite from the heat if you decide to take a dip to cool off. You can expect the water temperature to be between 83 and 84 °F in July.

But we doubt you’d want to swim in the ocean anyway, given the abundance of seaweed in July. We’ll talk more about Cancun’s seaweed issue shortly. But for now, know that your hotel’s pool will likely offer a more comfortable swimming experience for you and your kids.

Are you ready to hear Cancun’s humidity levels in June? The average is 100%. That’s right—the dew point is essentially saturated the entire month, meaning that you can expect to fill sticky and muggy from the moment you step outside.

So, we recommend planning your family activities in the morning and late afternoons to work around high temperatures and humidity. That way, you can grab lunch and a nap during the hottest part of the day.

You can expect a mix of sun and clouds, barring a hurricane, during your time in Cancun, and provided you stay more than a few days, you’ll notice more weather fluctuations. 

The amount of overcast or mostly cloudy skies ranges from 78% to 74%, with the nominally lower percentage being towards the end of July. In fact, July is one of the cloudiest months in Cancun on average, with June 29th having the highest amount of clouds and February 24th being the clearest. 

Despite these “gloomy” numbers, it’s common to have at least partial sun for a portion of most days in July. Yes, washout rainy days happen in Cancun during that time of year. But more often than not, you’ll still have opportunities to work on your tan.

Along similar lines, the length of daylight time in Cancun will decrease throughout July. 

You’ll lose an average of 36 seconds of daylight per day, which adds up to four minutes and 13 seconds per week. The good news is that even on the shortest sunlight day of the month (July 31st), you’ll still get to enjoy 13 hours and 6 minutes of daylight.

Despite July being a month with more cloud cover than most other parts of the year in Cancun, the amount of rain this region experiences decreases as the month progresses.

For example, the 31-day accumulation average on July 1st is 4.2 inches. By the time July 28th rolls around, that number drops by nearly one inch to 3.3 inches.

So, what does that mean for your family? The later in July you travel, the higher the chance of encountering less total rainfall. Of course, a hurricane would throw off these numbers completely, so that’s worth keeping in mind.

High winds aren’t typically a big issue in Cancun in July (minus the presence of a hurricane). On the contrary, most tourists would appreciate more than the 7.3 – 6.7 mile per hour average range they encounter.

You can feel the most amount of wind at the beach; walking around inland can feel suffocatingly still wind-wise, given that the tall buildings in Cancun’s Hotel Zone block the breeze.

Yes, Cancun gets hurricanes in July, so this is something you and your family should mentally prepare for before booking your trip.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1st – November 30th. The good news is that Cancun tends to not receive as many direct hurricane hits as some Caribbean islands, and the greatest chance of hurricanes increases starting in August. 

Nevertheless, hurricanes are a real possibility in July, both as direct or indirect hits. So, it’s important to explain to your kids that there’s a chance a hurricane could cause you not to take your trip, or you might have to depart early once you arrive.

The good news is that since Cancun is a relatively young city, it has many new buildings with architecture designed to withstand strong winds. Nevertheless, spending your vacation in a hotel room isn’t fun or feasible, depending on the storm’s strength.

One way to help lessen the burden of changing your travel plans at the last minute is to book an airline that doesn’t charge fees to change your flight. Southwest is an excellent example, and they offer multiple daily flights out of the Cancun International Airport. 

Yes, mosquitoes abound in Cancun in July. The good news is that you likely won’t feel them if you’re close to the water on the beach because of the breeze. But even sitting in an open-air restaurant set back from the beach can cause your body to turn into a feeding ground.

So, make sure to pack some bug spray. If you forget to do so, no worries—you can buy it at one of the many pharmacies in Cancun. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock on high-demand tourist items like these.

Yes, we said it—there’s a significant downside to visiting Cancun in July aside from the potential for a run-in with a hurricane. Sargassum is a seaweed that arrives in Cancun, and at the beaches of many places from Florida to Caribbean islands, from May to October.

Sargassum covers nearly every square inch of the shore’s surface. Although it smells like rotting eggs and makes swimming nearly impossible at the height of its season, the good news is that it isn’t harmful to human health.

In fact, this floating habitat serves its purpose in the marine world because it provides a home and food for sea life. 

Unfortunately, sargassum blooms are more rampant than they used to be due to agricultural runoff and rising ocean temperatures. The result is nearly unmanageable amounts of seaweed that pile up as much as multiple feet high on the shore.

So, if you choose to visit Cancun in July, we recommend checking with your hotel to see if they have a sargassum management strategy. Many hotels, especially those within Cancun’s Hotel Zone, regularly comb the beaches with rakes, wheelbarrows, and sometimes even bulldozers to keep the area in front of their beach looking as pristine as possible.

Things To Do in Cancun in July

If you’re wondering, “Is July a good time to go to Cancun for unique activities?” the answer is yes. Below are some family-friendly activities you can partake in at that time of year.

Cancun isn’t only a popular spot for humans; sea turtles also love it. In fact, its beaches are the nesting site for four of the eight sea turtle species in the world. 

Sea turtles begin nesting on Cancun’s beaches in May. Since the incubation period is six to eight weeks, the month of July is when you have the chance to start watching sea turtles hatch.

Most sea turtles hatch at night , given that it protects them from land-based predators like seagulls. However, we recommend checking with your hotel to see if they can offer you any leads on where you can potentially watch sea turtles hatch. 

The chances of getting so lucky are low, though. So, you’re likely better off having your kids look for sea turtle tracks early in the morning, as momma sea turtles still arrive on Cancun’s shores in July to lay their eggs.

If hearing the words “whale shark” gives you visions of a massive marine creature with gigantic teeth ready to turn your kids into a snack, only the massive part is correct. Whale sharks are a type of fish , not a shark.

These beautiful and peaceful creatures can grow over 40 feet long, filling their stomachs with krill through their filter-feeding ways.

It just so happens that July falls in the heart of the whale shark season for Cancun, where you can snorkel or dive with them as they migrate. You’ll need to sign up for a tour, as whale sharks don’t come too close to shore.

From there, the boat will take you to prime whale shark swimming spots. You’ll need to be ready to make a quick entry into the water from the boat, for your guide will tell you when a whale shark is passing, and you should get in the water to see it.

What better way to cool off in the hot weather than by taking your kids to a theme park? You’ll get to choose from several water parks, many of which sit on a breathtakingly beautiful part of the Caribbean coast.

Vacations abroad are a fantastic learning opportunity for children, as they can observe and learn about a different culture. But knowing about not-so-kid-friendly events you should steer clear of is equally important.

So, below are two popular events that take place in the Cancun region in July.

Every year the nearby Island of Isla Mujeres celebrates whale shark season with a festival. It only takes 30 minutes by ferry to reach Isla Mujeres from Cancun. From there, you’ll get to learn about whale sharks, sample local street food, and your kids can partake in many kid-friendly activities. 

Cancun is a party city, so it’s hard to find a month when there isn’t a festivity of some sort going on. It just so happens that Destination X offers that party vibe in July, with this five-day festival taking place in the nightlife area of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. Loud music and beach parties day and night abound during the festival.

If you decide that traveling to Cancun in July isn’t the right fit for your family and you’d rather travel during the best time of year, plan your trip anywhere from December to April.

These months fall during the high season. So, although there will be many more tourists present, the chances of rain are lower, you don’t have to worry about hurricanes, sargassum will be non-existent, and you can expect lots of sunshine.

Alternatively, you can plan your trip during the shoulder months of May or November. The mass crowds of tourists subside during this time as the weather undergoes a transition period. 

You can expect some rain, although you might get away with none. Sargassum is also less of a problem since it’s just starting its growth cycle in May. By the time November rolls around, you likely will only see scraps of old sargassum remaining.

That said, everyone has their own definition of the “best” time of year to visit Cancun. So, we encourage you and your family to consider everything we discussed here and decide for yourselves what the best month is for you.

January in Cancun

January is high season in Mexico, and it’s definitely not the best time if you’re to travel to Cancun if you’re looking for cheap prices and a quiet getaway.

This is peak season, but it is the best time to visit Cancun if you’re looking for some of the best weather.

The weather in January is absolutely glorious because it’s neither too hot nor too cold.

This is winter, but temperatures still average around 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) and the Caribbean water is still marvelously warm. 

This is the dry season too, and the skies will be clear and there’s little chance of any rain.

It’s a good time for snorkeling and diving as the water is clear, and there’s little run off to make things murky.

On land, take advantage of the cool weather to get out and explore the Mayan sites in the usually humid jungles of Quintana Roo. 

February in Cancun

Temperatures rise slightly in February, but not on a huge scale, making this a great month weather-wise to be in Cancun. 

Again, this is still high season, however, it’s much, much quieter compared to January.

Hotel prices won’t be much cheaper but you’ll have more space to yourself at tourist attractions after the holiday rush is left behind in January.

There are clear skies and little rain, so February makes for a great time to get out to the Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza or Tulum , which will be pleasant to stroll around for most of the day given the lack of humidity. 

Jump into the water for some great snorkeling or diving. If you’re feeling adventurous, then this is Bull Shark breeding season and you can get up and close with these beautiful sharks in the waters off the coast of Cancun throughout February. 

March in Cancun

March is the beginning of the end of the high season, and while it can be a good time to visit many of the historic and cultural sites where the crowds will be thinner, Cancun itself can be raucous at certain times. 

That’s because it’s Spring Break and Cancun is one of the most popular getaways.

Avoid the Spring Break hot spots though and you’ll find plenty of quiet places to visit still.

The weather is excellent in March, with clear skies, and temperatures averaging just under 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

It’s the driest month of the year, so take advantage of this and hit the coast to scuba dive or snorkel in clear waters, especially as this is the last month when you can see the Bull Shark breeding frenzies. 

April in Cancun

April is the last month of the high season, and you can expect the crowds to thin out in lots of places – although avoid the Easter break if that falls in April and again, watch out for Spring Break too. 

Temperatures are on the rise in April, and this is the last month where you’re guaranteed dry weather, so take advantage of this and get diving or exploring the cenotes and Mayan ruins. After April, things begin to not only get hotter but more humid too. 

Enjoy the last of the excellent weather and enjoy potentially lower prices and quieter beaches too with a visit to Cancun in April. 

May in Cancun

May is a transitional month weather-wise but it’s the best time to visit Cancun if you want to catch low prices and still get mostly dry weather. 

The temperatures are on the rise now as summer approaches and you can expect it to be at least 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) especially towards the end of the month.

Be prepared for a few showers though and pack a raincoat when you’re out exploring. Any storms though won’t last too long in May. 

You can get great end of season resort and flight deals so if you’re on a budget this is a fantastic time to plan a holiday and to escape the crowds too. 

June in Cancun

June is when the rainy season begins in Cancun, however, it’s not the worst month for rain, and it’s still a good time to visit. 

It tends to be quieter this time of year and you can get low season prices and beat the crowds too. 

Remember though, that temperatures are rising and that it’s starting to get more and more humid too.

While the Mayan sites might be quieter you’ll also need to get there early to avoid the worst of the heat, and walking around all day in the tropics will be a sweaty affair, to say the least.

July in Cancun

July is also a rainy month, and weather-wise, it’s much more humid in July than in June. 

It’s a great time to spend swimming though, because the water in the Caribbean is outrageously warm through July, although visibility if you’re planning on snorkeling or diving declines due to run-off from the land.

It’s also a good time to visit the cenotes as they offer a wonderfully cooling experience with cold clear water to enjoy. 

August in Cancun

August is again hot and humid so you’ll want to spend most of your time at the beach if you can.

Luckily this is low season so prices for hotels and resorts can be a steal, making this the best time to visit Cancun if you’re on a budget. 

Importantly, this is prime time for whale sharks along the coast, as they are here in huge numbers feeding in the Caribbean waters.

You can snorkel or dive with these beautiful fish in warm waters, and they are so large that the lower visibility won’t stop you from seeing them.

August is technically hurricane season in the Caribbean, although these are rare in Cancun. Just stay informed of the weather when you are in the area and keep safe. 

September in Cancun

September is still low season in Cancun, and it’s also still hurricane season, so keep safe and keep informed. 

Temperatures are cooling down though as the height of summer is over and things will start to get slightly drier, just be prepared for a few big storms. 

September is the last month to catch whale sharks along the coast, so head to Isla Mujeres for the best chance to see these huge fish in their natural environment. 

As this is low season, you can get excellent deals on flights and resorts, and you’ll still be able to enjoy the mostly great weather, just pack a raincoat. 

October in Cancun

October sees falling temperatures and Lower levels of humidity, and it can be the best time to visit Cancun before the high season starts again.

You might see the odd large storm and this is the last month of the hurricane season, but it’s worth the risks for the lower costs.

Things are quiet in October and the whale sharks have left, but it’s a great month for just relaxing on the beaches and enjoying the warm weather.

At the end of October, you can even experience the Day of the Dead festival, which begins on Halloween.

November in Cancun

November is the transitional month before the dry season and peak season truly begins in December.

If you’re looking for some autumnal sunshine and to escape colder weather elsewhere then this is the best time to visit Cancun.

Temperatures are falling, of course, compared to summer but it’s still hot, with highs in the late twenties.

Things are quiet compared to the rush that’s about to begin in December and over the festive period. 

December in Cancun

December is one of the busiest times to be in Mexico, and if you want a quiet holiday or getaway then this is not the best time to visit Cancun.

If, however, you are searching for winter sunshine and a hot destination where you can spend Christmas on the beach, then this is the time to visit.

Prices are not cheap in December though, as this is peak season, and many resorts and hotels can be booked out.

Prepare to pay a premium for the luxury of spending Christmas and New Year in Cancun, but if budget isn’t an issue, then you’ll be treated to glorious weather.

Cancun in January

January in Cancun means warm and sunny days and cooler nights with little to no rain. Temperatures typically reach a balmy 80°+, making January prime time to hit the beach. You will also find that the water is calm and a vibrant blue, though a little chilly for some. Thanks to cool ocean temperatures, you won’t have to worry about seaweed in Cancun in January.

Visiting Cancun in early January puts you among the Christmas Break visitors who want to soak up the sunshine before returning home to colder weather. You can expect large crowds as this is peak season , and you will also find steep prices at Cancun hotels and Cancun all inclusive resorts .

The biggest festival in Cancun in January is El Dia De Los Reyes or King’s Day. This festival is celebrated on January 6th and marks the 12th day of Christmas. This is when families traditionally exchange presents and eat oval shaped sweet bread.

Cancun in February

February is a fantastic time to visit Cancun, as you’re between the Christmas and Spring Break crowds. The weather is phenomenal, with bright sunny days and cooler evenings. February can be pretty humid, but the water is cool and refreshing during this month. Seaweed isn’t likely to be a problem in Canun in February. The Caribbean waters are clear, making February optimal for snorkeling and diving.

Keep in mind there are still many tourists in Cancun in February. Make sure you book activities as soon as possible and arrive at the beach early for the best spot because this is still considered peak season.

February in Cancun brings great events. During this month, you can celebrate Candlemas Day (Día de Candelaria), Constitution Day, Valentine’s Day, and the LIV Golf Mayakoba Tournament ! Celebrate Valentine’s Day with friends or your significant other at an amazing beach club, or one of Cancun’s fantastic restaurants . Just make sure you book well in advance because reservations fill up fast!

Constitution Day is the first Monday in February and is a national holiday that commemorates the 1917 approval of the Constitution of Mexico. You can find parades and festivities organized throughout Cancun.

Cancun in March

March brings the Spring Break crowds to the Caribbean, and Cancun is home to some of the largest parties in the world during Spring Break. If you want to avoid crowds, March is not the best month to visit Cancun. Resorts are brimming with college kids having the time of their lives. Huge parties line the beach constantly during this time of the year.

March is a great time to visit Cancun in terms of weather, however, and you can find warm temperatures, low humidity, and about 9 hours of sunshine each day. Daytime temperatures are typically in the low 80s, with nighttime temperatures in the low 70s. As the water temperatures warm during March in Cancun, seaweed will begin to emerge. 

On March 19, 2024, the Spring Equinox takes place. This is the perfect time for a visit to the famous Mayan historical site Chichen Itza! There are plenty of amazing tours of Chichen Itza if you don’t want to explore the Mayan ruins alone.

Cancun in April

April is the beginning of shoulder season in Cancun, which means the crowds start to thin out. While Cancun won’t be completely empty, it’s less packed than in March during Spring Break. You’ll also find that prices drop, making securing reasonable accommodation rates easier.

Cancun in April means amazing weather with hot days and a low chance of rain. With temperatures in the high 80s during the day and dipping into the mid 70s at night, you can enjoy evening strolls on the beach in pure bliss. This is an excellent time of year to hit the beautiful beaches of Cancun as the water is warm and pleasant. However, April in Cancun means you will begin seeing more seaweed on the beaches.  Area attractions won’t have long waits, and there is minimal risk of rain to spoil your Cancun adventures.

Cancun’s Anniversary falls in April and is celebrated with music, exhibits, parades, and other festivities. The deeply sacred Semana Santa , or the Catholic Holy Week of Easter, is also generally celebrated during April. You can expect street decorations, parades, and various religious observances. If you are planning to visit Cancun during the Easter holiday make sure to book accommodations early.

The celebration of El Dia del Nino, or Children’s Day, falls on April 30th. Kids are off school, and there are special discounts at many local Cancun attractions.

  ISLAND LIFE TRAVEL TIP : SEAWEED SEASON IS APRIL TO AUGUST

Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, during these months we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool  area for swimming or spending some time on the islands of  Cozumel  or  Isla Mujeres  which are largely protected from the seaweed.

Cancun in May

May is a truly magical time in Cancun and one of the best times to visit for a unique experience. Not only is the weather perfect, but this is the top time to spot wildlife in the area. At the end of the month, you can watch in awe as nesting sea turtles begin to appear on nearby beaches. This is also when whale sharks start to migrate near Cancun as well. The best way to experience this time of year is by snorkeling. You can usually see these stunning animals in their natural habitat during May, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Keep in mind that s eaweed will begin to be more prevalent in Cancun in May.

May in Cancun is typically one of the hotter months, with daytime temperatures in the 90s. The air is often warm and humid, with nights dipping into the mid 70s.   Keep in mind that some restaurants and local businesses close in May. Visiting Cancun during May is a good choice if you are looking for a slower pace of travel.

While Americans may think Cinco de Mayo is the star of the show in May, celebrations in Mexico are small and few. You might find the occasional bar deal or resort party, but it’s not as big as it is in the United States. Music lovers can head over to nearby Isla Mujeres to relax and listen to music in tropical paradise at Island Fest.

Cancun in June

Cancun hurricane season begins in early June and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Cancun are very low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Cancun can still cause inclement weather. Most days in June are still sunny and beautiful, but there is an increased chance of showers and humidity as summer approaches. June is also when whale shark numbers peak! Make sure to check water visibility because seaweed in Cancun typically peaks in June. Most beachfront hotels and resorts clear the beaches of seaweed daily, but there may still be seaweed in the water. Consider visiting Cozumel , which is largely protected from the seaweed and remains clear. 

June brings warmer temperatures to Cancun, with highs in the mid 90s and lows in the high 70s. Since June also marks the end of the school year, you can find many teenagers celebrating the completion of academics. If you’re looking for fewer crowds, great hotel deals, and a relaxed atmosphere, then June is a great time to visit.

June brings Dia de la Marina , Mexico’s Navy Day, celebrated with parades and fireworks on June 1st. With the water visibility being fantastic in June, this is also a great time to take a Whale Shark tour .

Cancun in July

July is a special time to visit Cancun as this is the month when you can witness baby sea turtles set off for the ocean. It’s an incredible sight to see in person as these little creatures wander towards the water for the first time. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities to get up close and personal with the baby turtles. Otherwise, you can watch from a distance on the beach.

July is low season, and you can get great deals on accommodations and flights. However, if you visit Cancun in July, be prepared for sporadic rain and some hot and humid days. Temperatures are typically in the mid-90s, with lows dipping to the high 70s. Afternoon rains often occur during July as well. The water is at its warmest during this month, but y ou will find seaweed on most beaches in Cancun in July. Beachfront hotels and resorts clear the beaches of seaweed daily, but there may still be seaweed in the water. Consider visiting Cozumel , which is largely protected from the seaweed and remains clear. 

Cancun in August

Cancun is enchanting during August when it comes to wildlife. The warm water brings more sea turtle nesting, whale sharks in pods, and sea turtle babies continue to make their way to the ocean. However, regarding the weather, August isn’t the best month to visit Cancun. August is peak seaweed season in Cancun, and it’s a good idea to avoid the most affected beaches such as Las Perlas, Playa Coral, and Chacmool. Many beachfront hotels and resorts clear the beaches of seaweed daily, but there may still be seaweed in the water. Consider visiting Cozumel , which is largely protected from the seaweed and remains clear. 

August tends to be rainy and unbelievably humid in Cancun, so crowds are sparse during this time of year. That means there is plenty of room at local attractions, resorts, and restaurants. Since August is the low season, prices will be reasonable, but you must confirm that any tours you are considering are running.

Cancun in September

After a long and hot Cancun summer, September is when things begin to cool off. This is your last chance to catch whale sharks, as they will migrate by the end of the month. You are likely to see some sea turtles wandering around, especially down in Akumal . While you will still experience a high volume of seaweed in Cancun in September, the beaches are cleared as often as possible. In fact, beachfront hotels and resorts clear the beaches of seaweed daily, but there may still be seaweed in the water. Consider visiting Cozumel , which is largely protected from the seaweed and remains clear. 

With temperatures dropping into the high 80s during the day and mid 70s at night, the weather is a bit hazy in September. You can find some of the best deals on hotels , all inclusive resorts and tours during this month, as it’s the rainiest month of the year. However, for those looking to visit Cancun without the crowds, September is the prime time to take advantage of these great deals and you should still have some sunny days mixed in there.

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated in September, with festivities beginning in downtown Cancun around September 15. You can expect incredible food, mariachi bands, and tequila in full force while locals celebrate until late. At 11 PM, you can experience El Grito or the call for independence. Fireworks and fun follow this. Mexican Independence Day is September 16 and is commemorated by massive parades.

Cancun in October

Budget travelers will love Cancun in October with cooler weather, few tourists, and inexpensive accommodations. During October, it’s still warm enough to hit the beach and the summer rain showers ease up towards the end of the month. October in Cancun brings an end to the seaweed season, and you will notice that the beaches begin to clear. T he lack of tourists means you can enjoy the white sand beaches, Mayan ruins, and tours without the crowds!

While rain is still present in Cancun in October, the temperatures remain tropical, with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 70s throughout the month. If you plan on visiting Cancun in October, pack a Halloween costume, as there are plenty of spooky festivities to celebrate the holiday. Keep in mind there are very few places to purchase a costume in Cancun.

If you love music, you may want to check out Cancun’s Jazz Festival in late October at the Moon Palace Resort . The festival offers live performances from jazz musicians from around the world.

Cancun in November

The shoulder season returns in November, making it less rainy and bringing more tourists to Cancun than in the previous months. Sunny days return, but crowds are relatively thin before the holiday season brings the masses to the Yucatan. Late November is an ideal beach time and the beaches are clear of seaweed, making this the perfect time to soak up the sun. It also offers the opportunity to visit the ruins and other Cancun attractions without the threat of heat or rain showers.

November brings near perfect weather to Cancun every single day. You will find highs in the low to mid 80s and lows in the low 70s. This also makes November a great time to snorkel, as water visibility is clear.

Travelers are drawn to Cancun in November for the Day of the Dead, or Dia de Los Muertos , celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. This unique holiday is when respect is paid to ancestors and those who have passed away. The celebrations include offerings, sugar skulls, and decorating family altars to guide spirits home. These traditional experiences are put on in different parks around town, followed by plenty of parties in the Hotel Zone in true Cancun fashion.

Cancun in December

December brings the true return of Cancun’s high season. While the beginning of December is chill in Cancun, tourists flock to this tropical paradise to escape cold winter temperatures and celebrate the holidays. You can expect crowded resorts, beaches, restaurants, and much warmer weather if you’re coming from the northern United States.

If you dream of celebrating Christmas on the beach in Cancun, book your accommodations and flights in advance, as thousands of others have the same idea. 📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro , It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof ! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV  which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest  Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.

Cancun in July: the weather and best activities for your holiday

Steeped in a rich tapestry of culture and history, and boasting some of the most picturesque beaches in the world, Cancun is the crown jewel of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It's a vibrant city that seamlessly blends the charm of the ancient Mayan civilization with the contemporary allure of high-end resorts and delectable Mexican cuisine.

As to whether July is a good time to visit, the answer largely depends on your tolerance for heat and a certain degree of unpredictability with the weather. While it's indeed hot and falls within the hurricane season, the crowds are less, and the deals are more attractive.

Overview of Cancun's Climate

Cancun enjoys a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures throughout the year. The annual average temperature hovers around 27C (80.6F), offering year-round summer conditions. The year can generally be divided into two primary seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October, which also coincides with the hurricane season.

July in Cancun is certainly on the hotter side. The average maximum daytime temperature typically sits around 34C (93.2F), while the average minimum nighttime temperature drops to a still balmy 26C (78.8F). It is worth noting that the humidity can make it feel hotter than it is, and air conditioning becomes a treasured commodity.

July is a sun-soaked month with long daylight hours that allow you to make the most of your holiday. The city gets an average of 13 hours of daylight per day, with the sun rising around 6 am and setting close to 7:30 pm. Despite the occasional shower, days are predominantly sunny with an average of 7 to 8 hours of sunshine per day.

Rain is a frequent visitor in Cancun during July, but it tends to be in the form of short, heavy showers rather than all-day drizzles. The average rainfall for the month is about 112mm, with approximately 11 rainy days in total. As you'd expect from the tropical climate, the humidity levels are high, averaging around 77%.

As for the turquoise-blue waters that lap Cancun's pristine shores, they remain delightfully warm even in July. Sea temperatures typically hover around 28C (82.4F), offering perfect conditions for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. These inviting waters make even the hottest days more bearable and offer a delightful respite from the heat.

Despite being in the midst of the hurricane season, July in Cancun remains a favoured destination for tourists from around the world. As you traverse the city, you'll notice a lively atmosphere pervading the streets, the resorts, and the sandy beaches. It's a prime time for travellers, especially those seeking to savour the vibrant Mexican summer. However, it's not as crowded as the December to April peak season when the weather is a tad more predictable.

In terms of costs, visiting Cancun in July can offer a more affordable experience compared to the peak season. While it's not the cheapest time to visit—that honour goes to the months of September and October—it's definitely less pricey than the winter months when the prices tend to skyrocket. You're likely to find hotels and rental rooms at moderate rates during this time. Many establishments offer deals and discounted packages to attract tourists during this off-peak period, so savvy travellers can certainly find bargains to be had.

While families with young children may have reservations due to the uncertain weather, July can still be a delightful time to visit with a bit of careful planning. There's a wealth of indoor attractions for those sudden rainstorms, including interactive aquariums, numerous museums, and expansive shopping malls. Additionally, the warm sea waters offer excellent conditions for swimming and other water activities for children of all ages.

Interestingly, a majority of the tourists visiting Cancun in July hail from North America, with a significant proportion from the United States and Canada. This is largely due to the summer holidays in these countries, which offer families an opportunity to travel abroad. European travellers also contribute to the tourist numbers, albeit in slightly lesser numbers.

Clothes to pack for July in Cancun

Packing for Cancun in July is quite straightforward. The key is to pack light, breathable clothing to comfortably handle the high temperatures and occasional rain showers. Swimwear is essential, of course, for enjoying Cancun's beautiful beaches and water activities. Don't forget to pack a good sun hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect you from the strong Mexican sun. Comfortable footwear is also a must, particularly if you're planning to explore Mayan ruins or indulge in hiking activities.

In the daytime, stick to T-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses. They will keep you cool in the hot and humid weather. At night, you may want to carry a light jacket or shawl, especially if you're planning on waterfront dining as it can get a bit breezy. However, the nights in Cancun during July remain quite warm, so heavier clothing is generally not needed.

The best months to visit Cancun

If you're looking for the ideal time to visit Cancun, the months from December to April are arguably the best. The weather during these months is near-perfect, with very little rainfall and plenty of sunshine. The average temperature ranges from a pleasant 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, providing an excellent climate for beach activities and sightseeing. Additionally, this period avoids the hurricane season, offering more predictability for your travel plans.

The worst months to visit Cancun

If possible, try to avoid visiting Cancun during September and October. These months are the peak of the hurricane season, and the region experiences the highest rainfall during this period. While you may find the cheapest rates for accommodation, the unpredictable weather may limit outdoor activities and sightseeing. Therefore, unless you're a fan of heavy tropical rains or intend to enjoy the indoor amenities of your hotel mostly, it's better to choose other months for your visit.

Fantastic activities for Cancun during July

1. Visit the Mayan Ruins : Cancun is the gateway to the ancient Mayan world, and a trip to the region would be incomplete without a visit to these historical sites. The Tulum and Coba ruins, located just a couple of hours away from Cancun, are spectacular sites that transport you back in time. While Tulum impresses with its cliffside location overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Coba entices with its lofty pyramid that you can climb for a stunning view of the surrounding jungle.

2. Experience the Xcaret Park : The eco-archaeological park of Xcaret offers a unique combination of natural and cultural attractions. With its underground rivers, stunning lagoons, and animal habitats, it's an incredible place to experience Cancun's rich biodiversity. Meanwhile, the park's replicas of Mayan villages and traditional Mexican haciendas provide a peek into the area's cultural heritage.

3. Dive in the Great Mesoamerican Reef : The warm sea temperatures in July are perfect for exploring Cancun's underwater wonders. As the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the Great Mesoamerican Reef offers incredible opportunities for diving and snorkelling. Nice, France: July is a splendid time to visit this gorgeous jewel on the French Riviera. Nice bathes in glorious sunshine, with temperatures around 27C (80F), perfect for lounging on pebbled beaches or exploring the vibrant Old Town. The azure waters of the Mediterranean are welcomingly warm, and the city is alive with the buzz of summer festivities, including the famous Nice Jazz Festival.

Cancun Itinerary at a Glance

This Cancun itinerary is packed with things to do because I thought you may want to make the most of it during your stay in Cancun.

However, you can switch around the day or switch a day out with a day basking in the sun, especially if you are in an All-inclusive hotel on the beach, by all means! You are on vacation it shouldn’t feel like work!😂

Day 1 – Cancun highlights: Isla Blanca – El Meco – Mercado 23 – Playa Delfines – El Rey – La Isla (sunset)

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula: Chichen Itza – Valladolid – Cenote

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry): Isla Mujeres

Day 4 – Tulum bound: Tulum Archeological Site – Tulum Beach – Cenote

Day 5 – Cancun backyard: Cancun Cenote near Puerto Morelos + Lunch on the beach, relax in your hotel

Day 6 – Playa del Carmen day: Xpu-ha beach + Cenote + Playa del Carmen

Day 1 – cancun highlights.

On your first day in Cancun, you either want to spend all day in your spectacular all-inclusive hotel on the beach or you can’t wait to explore and see as much as possible of Cancun.

Either way, I think a day trip itinerary in Cancun would be perfect. I have included the top Cancun sites for a day packed with things to do but you can skip some of them if you don’t feel like doing everything.

It would be ideal if you had a car so it would be much easier to move around. As I mentioned before along the Cancun Hotel Zone you can take the R1 or R2 buses but to get to Mercado 23 or Isla Blanca it gets complicated.

If you don’t have your own car, ask your hotel for a recommended taxi driver.

8.30 am – Isla Blanca

start your day with one of the most spectacular and off-the-beaten-path beaches of Cancun, Isla Blanca .

Keep in mind that there is nothing there, so we won’t stay too long so that you can explore more of Cancun. Also, you would get there early morning so the sun is not too strong. Regardless, remember to bring:

• sunscreen, hat, water, and towels

10.30 am – El Meco archeological site

Situated on the way to Isla Blanca you can stop by on the way back. It won’t take long to visit as it’s very small but definitely worth it. The ancient Mayan ruins are surrounded by a lush tropical jungle home to birds, squirrels and iguanas among others. You may be able to see a family of the funny Coaties hanging around.

12.30 pm – Mercado 23

On the way back to the hotel zone you can make a detour and check out Mercado 23 where the locals hang out. This is a real authentic market where you can find local produce and all sorts of food. You can try the local restaurant for some authentic Mexican tacos, quesadillas, or tortas (Mexican Sandwiches)

14.00 pm – El Rey

El Rey is another small but interesting ancient ruin located right by the beach in Cancun opposite to Playa Delfines.

15 pm – Playa Delfines and Cancun colorful sign

Playa Delfines is one of the most popular attractions in Cancun together with the colorful Cancun sign located right on the lookout terrace, with the spectacular turquoise Caribbean sea as a backdrop.

Playa Delfines is an equipped public beach where you can find bathrooms and showers, sunbeds and shades for rent. Before rushing to the beach make sure you take a minute to enjoy the view from the lookout terrace.

When I was younger and I just arrived in Cancun, I used to get there at 6 am to take surf lessons. I was happily surprised to find out that the surf school is still there and there are actually more surf schools in Cancun now.

Although this area is not the best surfing spot in Mexico you can still find good waves and take classes if you want to learn. Check out Good vibes surf school as well.

Otherwise, you can just take nice walks on the beach and relax after a long morning exploring Cancun

5 pm – Plaza La Isla

I love hanging out in Plaza La Isla around sunset times, window shopping, or maybe even shopping, and stopping by the Nichupte lagoon to watch the sun setting over the Cancun skyline.

Keep in mind that the sun sets around 6 to 630 in winter and 7.30 in the summer.

After sunset, you can decide whether to go back to the hotel and get dressed for dinner or, just stay out for dinner in Plaza la Isla since there are many delicious restaurants to choose from.

✔️ Relax on the beach in one of the all-inclusive hotels – If you chose among the spectacular Cancun All-inclusive resorts I suppose you want to spend at least one day in the resort enjoying the beautiful If you are not staying in a resort on the beach, worry not.

Many hotels offer a day pass option, where you can pay a fee that usually includes lunch and drinks and the use of beach beds and hotel facilities.

✔️ Join a tour on the Nichupte’ Lagoon – The Nichupte’ Lagoon is a spectacular huge body of water that separates Cancun Downtown from the Hotel Zone. It’s home to a wealth of wildlife and a great place to practice all sorts of watersports.

There are different tours that take you to explore the Nichupte lagoon. Here are my favorite ones:

👉 Sunset boat tour – One is a 4-hour tour at sunset by a small fisherman boat cruising around the mangroves spotting the wildlife and watching the sunset that you can drive yourself. Another one, more eco-friendly and fun, in my opinion, is kayaking either at sunrise or sunset. ↳ BOOK IT HERE

👉 Kayaking in the Nichupte’ lagoon – this is more ecological but requires some work on your end 😜. Kayaking is not easy but doable. The Nichupte’ lagoon doesn’t have strong currents so you should be ok even if you don’t have a lot of experience. They have tours at sunrise and sunset, both amazing. BOOK IT HERE

✔️ Go scuba-diving – If you are a certified diver you cannot miss the chance to dive here. Scuba diving in Cancun is a great experience ad a choice among many different dive sites, including a shipwreck and the MUSA underwater museum, among others.

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula

On day 2, my suggestion is to explore the cradle of the Mayan heritage in the heart of Yucatan and visit one of the 7 wonders and UNESCO World Heritage site Chichen Itza.

8.30 am Chichen Itza – The majestic site is definitely a must if you have never seen it before. Include El Castillo (the largest pyramid) the thousands column, the observatory, the ball game field, and the sacred cenote, among others.

If you don’t go on an organized tour you should hire one of the certified guides that you will find at the entrance of the site.

Try to get there by 8.30/9 am to avoid the crowd.

12.00 Valladolid – at only 45 minute drive from Chichen Itza you will find the pretty colonial town of Valladolid. It’s worth taking a walk around the iconic plaza and walk along the Calzada de los Frailes to the Convent.

Along that road, you will find some local restaurants where you can have your lunch. There are many vegan and vegetarian options as well. Although Valladolid is a popular tourist destination, it conserves the old town’s charm.

3.30 pm – You can either visit the cenote Zaci which is located only 2 blocks from the main square, or you can explore further many different hidden cenotes around Valladolid. In this guide, you can find some amazing suggestions.

For this day, the best option is to rent a car and drive around at your own pace. This way you will manage to skip the lines and enjoy the day in peace and tranquillity.

If renting a car is not an option for you, there are many amazing organized tours, which include transportation, a guide, and a stop at a cenote and Valladolid.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 2

If you have been to Chichen Itza already, I would suggest checking out Coba archeological site. It’s only 2 hours drive from Cancun if you take the internal road, skipping Tulum.

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry)

If you are staying 3 days in Cancun you cannot miss a boat tour – Your 3 day Cancun Itinerary couldn’t end better than with a boat tour to Isla Mujeres. After two days spent exploring the cultural stuff and the magic of the Yucatan peninsula, on day 3 of your Cancun itinerary, we are going to take it easy and relax.

Isla Mujeres is a pretty Mexican island located just 30 minutes ferry ride off the Cancun coast.

There are different ways to visit Isla Mujeres , here they are:

► Spend a couple of days on the island

This is ideal if you have plenty of time ad want to relax on the north beach or in a luxury boutique hotel in Isla Mujeres. There are quite a few options available. You can check out my post about Cancun vs Isla Mujeres to see which destination is the right fit for you.

► Take the ferry and explore Isla Mujeres on your own

Enjoy a quick ferry ride while you admire the spectacular turquoise waters of the Caribbean sea. Those colors only are worth the trip.

The ferry lives from different locations, one in Puerto Juarez , and other locations in the hotel zone such as Playa Tortuga and Playa Caracol . Check out the rates and schedule on the Ultramar ferry site

Once you get to Isla Mujeres you can rent a golf cart and explore the island, which is only 5 km long and bask in the beautiful playa norte, the perfect place where to swim and enjoy the crystal clear calm waters.

► Join a catamaran tour

The other option is to join a catamaran tour which usually includes a snorkeling stop, lunch, and some free time in Isla Mujeres.

Day 4 – Tulum bound (4-day Cancun Itinerary)

Your 4-day Cancun itinerary ends with Tulum, an unmissable spot on the Riviera Maya. Located about 95 km from Cancun on the Riviera Maya, Tulum is one of the trendiest beach destinations in Mexico.

Europeans usually prefer staying in Tulum rather than Cancun but they are both great destinations, just different.

If you are based in Cancun you can visit Tulum on a day trip either by car or choosing one of the existing tours.

If you go on your own I would visit first the Tulum archeological site before it gets crowded and hot, and then you can hit the beach for some swimming time and lunch in one of the Tulum Beach Club.

I love Posada Margherita and Cinco Tulum.

Then you can visit one of the Cenote near Tulum and on the way back to Cancun you can stop by the spectacular Xpu-ha Beach or Yalku-lagoon , near Akumal beach one main attractions in the area.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 4

This 4-day Cancun itinerary is well-packed with all the major highlights in Cancun and the surroundings but you may also want to consider just chilling for one day and enjoying your resort facilities or one of the stunning Cancun Beach Clubs.

Day 5 – Cancun backyard

I like to call Puerto Morelos Cancun Backyard as the pretty underrated town is located only 30 minutes drive from Cancun Cancun.

Here you can check out some of the Cenotes of the Ruta Puuc, take a boat tour to the coral reefs from the beach, and eat in one of the seafood restaurants on the beach. My favorite one is El Merkadito.

You can rent a car and easily get there on your own or, you can join some of the organized tours available.

Day 6 – Playa del Carmen day

On day 6 of our Cancun Itinerary, we’ll head out to check out some spectacular beaches on the Riviera Maya, and some cenotes and we’ll stop by the vibrant beach town of Playa del Carmen.

It’s advisable to rent a car for better comfort but this itinerary is definitely doable by bus.

First stop: Cenotes on the Riviera Maya – Leave Cancun around 8 am – if you want to take the bus, get to the ADO station and hop on the Playa Express mini vans right opposite the ADO entrance or the ones on the other side of the Av. Tulum.

They will take you to Playa del Carmen, and from there you will hop on one of the minivans that go to Tulum and stop at Cenote Azul.

Right there you have so many cenotes options to choose from or you can see them all. It’s cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino, Cenote Eden, and the Cenote park Chikin-ha . They are all close to each other and close to where the van will drop you off.

PRO TIP – Mind that the ADO bus doesn’t stop there. You need to get the minivan (colectivo or combi) and ask the driver to drop you off at Cenote Azul.

2nd Stop – Xpu-ha Beach – After enjoying the cenotes you can go back to the main road ( federal highway) and wait for the next COMBI to arrive. Hail at them and they will stop. Tell the driver to drop you off at Xpuha beach. it’s just 6 km from Cenote Azul.

You will have to cross the road, so be careful because cars and trucks travel at a very high speed. And then you have to walk for about 600 mt to reach on a dirt road to reach the spectacular Xpuha beach.

There you will find restaurants and beach chairs for rent or you can walk a little further north if you want to stay more isolated from the crowd.

3rd stop – Playa del Carmen – when you are tired of the beach or maybe you think you had enough sun, you head back on the main road where you catch your minivan in the direction of Playa Del Carmen.

There you can take a stroll on the famous Quinta Avenida, sit in one of the trendy bars for an aperitif and you can even wait for dinner in one of the local restaurants. La Cueva del Chango is one of them and the top rate on TripAdvisor is “The traveler table” ( I have never tried that but it has excellent reviews).

Or you can just head back to Cancun either by combi or ADO bus or of course your car if you rented it.

Day 7 – Long day out (7-day Cancun Itinerary)

If you were lucky enough to complete the full 7-day Cancun Itinerary, on your last day you can either relax on the beach or add one more exciting adventure to your vacation.

My first choice would be to visit the Protected Natural Reserve of Rio Lagartos + Las Coloradas and the ancient Mayan ruins of Ek Balam, one of my favorites.

If you have a car rental and go on your own make sure you contact Will , the best tour guide in Rio Lagartos, he’s a biologist and a photographer and is from there, passionate about his hometown and its spectacular nature.

A certified tour guide will take you around the spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its diversity of landscapes, flora, and fauna.

After seeing the hidden gem of Muyil Mayan Ruins, you will walk through mangroves and tropical vegetation until you reach your boat to navigate the ancient canals used by the Mayas in the pre Hispanic times.

Things to do in Cancun at night

What I love about Cancun is that it has everything for anyone and if you are a party lover you can also find many opportunities and places to dance the night away.

The Coco Bongo is an institution to see great performances and dance in between. Otherwise other places are Mandala and the Hip Hop Nightclub experience among others.

What if you are not a party person? (like me) Well, there are many other things we can do at night, besides a lovely dinner in one of the fine Cancun restaurants or in one of the on-site restaurants of your hotel. Here below some ideas.

Travel to Cancun: know before you go

Before diving into the itinerary details I thought I should share some important information that you should know before traveling to Cancun . So here you go.

How many days do I need in Cancun?

If you are wondering how many days are enough in Cancun , the short answer is it depends on how many days you have available and what you want to do with your time.

Some people prefer to have a base for the entire travel time and do small day trips, others prefer to rent a car and spend the night close to the attraction they are visiting.

There is no right or wrong here. It all boils down to what you feel like doing and what sort of vacation you want to have.

I would say two days are enough to explore Cancun and do some of the tours, but if you want to stay longer, I assure you, you won’t get bored. It’s a promise.

How to get to Cancun?

Whether you are flying from another country or from any other city in Mexico, Cancun international airport is the closest and most convenient airport to fly into.

Cancun is one of the most trafficked airports in Mexico after Mexico city which means that you have a lot of great connections with the major hubs from the United States and Europe with the best chance to find great deals.

I suggest you should check on n  Expedia for flight or package deals as they always have the latest offers.

How to get around Cancun?

If you are wondering, there is Uber in Cancun, but it’s complicated . Even though the law finally approved the car-shared services a few years ago, many taxi drivers didn’t approve of it and showed their disagreement with violent actions.

However, the taxi association decided to meet the UBER car share company halfway and now some taxi drivers have also joined. However, you can use it in the Hotel Zone or in the proximity of a taxi stand. 

How to get Cancun International Airport to your hotel

There are many ways to get to your hotel from Cancun airport. The easiest way, and my favorite one, is a door-to-door private shuttle service offered by Cancun Airport Transportation because it’s all about comfort and convenience. Cancun Airport Transportation staff speak English, are reliable, and professional, and provide a minimum waiting time service!

Public transportation

The public transportation options within the Cancun area are not very convenient unless you stay in the Hotel Zone, in which case you could hop on and off the R1 and R2 public buses for approximately 10 MXN.

To travel around the Yucatan Peninsula (Day 2 and Day 4 of your Cancun itinerary) you can use the ADO buses or the minivans (colectivos), when possible.

Sometimes, I love to join tours when they combine different attractions and destinations that would be impossible to visit by bus in one day simply because there aren’t enough connections or because buses don’t even get there.

Tours are also the best option for water-related activities, such as snorkeling or scuba diving in Cancun , which is amazing.

Also if you have little time and want to see as much as possible, tours are great and you also have a knowledgeable tour guide that will share useful historical and cultural data.

Car Rentals

However, my favorite way to explore Cancun and Mexico overall, is by renting a car, because you have the freedom to make your own itinerary, change it when you want, and drive at your own pace.

To find the best rental car deal I recommend the Discover Cars platform where you can compare different car rentals and then pick the one you like the most, for price and conditions. (Read the full Discover Cars review) .

If you want to use a local car rental, instead, I often use MexrentaCar . Their customer service leaves a lot of room for improvement, but every now and then they offer great deals and full insurance.

Driving in Cancun is quite easy although it may take some time to get the hang of it, just like when you rent a car in any foreign country.

Travel Insurance

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Cancun? Yes, you do. I actually purchase my travel insurance everywhere I go just to have peace of mind, one of the most important aspects of my travels.

If you ask me I have two recommended sites, one is  SafetyWings , which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

The other one is the Travel Insurance master  site which will help you find the perfect insurance for you.

You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

Where to stay in Cancun

While planning your Cancun itinerary you may need to decide where to stay in Cancun.

Luckily for you, there are many different options, whether you want to stay right on the beach or in town, from all-inclusive resorts to affordable hostels , small hotels, or apartments.

Is Cancun safe?

The short answer is yes, Cancun is relatively safe to travel to and to get out of your resort and explore. There is a crime in Cancun and there have been quite a few unpleasant episodes. The positive part of it is that those were all drug and cartel-related and if you stay away from that, you should not have any issues.

However make sure you don’t do silly things that may put your life in danger, be aware of your surrounding, and if you go out at night avoid dark isolated streets and keep an eye on your drink. Also, don’t get wasted, please!

Cancun is also a great solo female traveler destination but make sure you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, avoiding shady areas, especially at night, including walking on the beach alone at night, which is not recommended.

Among other things you should watch out for are, mosquitos (use repellent), strong currents in the sea, sunstrokes, and tap water (don’t drink it).

Use a refillable water bottle instead and fill it up in your hotel or restaurant and always take it with you. More about it later in this post.

The best time to travel to Cancun

It’s always a good time to travel to Cancun, it just depends on what you are looking for. Here I am sharing some information on Cancun seasons and the best time to travel to Cancun depending on different factors. Then you can head to my detailed guide (like here) for more specific information.

Cancun by season in a nutshell

June – October – (summer)  – Cancun wet season – more chance of rain (and hurricanes) and higher temperatures. Sargasso will most likely show up in these months. The Sea is warmer and Hotel prices are lower.

December through April (winter)  – Cancun dry season – Winter is also called the dry season when the weather cools down a bit and the sky is blue and sunny. The water temperature is cooler as well though, but it’s less likely to rain.

For this reason, it’s also called High Season and you will find the highest hotel prices in Cancun and anywhere in Mexico actually. It’s also the most crowded, hence the higher prices.

Whether you are a spring breaker or you want to avoid spring breakers, keep in mind that March and April are usually the months when you will find parties all over the place and packed hotels that welcome this kind of tourism.

Shoulder season (spring)- from after Easter through the beginning of June – That is my favorite season when you can find great deals, there are no big crowds and it’s not so hot and humid yet.

Shoulder season (fall) – mid-September – November  – During this shoulder season you will find more risk of rain and hurricane until the end of October. it’s really hot and humid until the end of October when it’s starting to get better. The sargassum is leaving the Mexican Caribbean coasts. The water temperature is still pleasant.

Cancun Itinerary: final thoughts

Everything you need to know before visiting Cancún

If my frequent travels to Cancún have taught me anything, it's that paradise will throw you a curveball from time to time.

Among the setbacks, I've experienced a costly car break-in, brazen price gouging and a debilitating bout of sickness with dengue fever, an ordeal that still makes my joints ache just thinking about it. But every time I found myself in need of help, the good folks in Cancún have stepped up big-time, and that's no small thing.

While some first-time visitors never leave the touristy, high-gloss hotel zone – which I get, the stunning resort offers pillow-soft Caribbean beaches – you’ll kick yourself later if you overlook the Centro, a bustling downtown.

This is where you can mingle with locals in the neighborhood cantinas and barter at traditional markets. Visit one atmospheric taco joint and you’ll be glad you made the effort. 

With that in mind, here are nine essential tips to make your Cancún trip run as smooth as possible.

1. Stay alert but don't let the clickbait headlines spook you

Despite all the grim news about Mexico 's drug-related violence, Cancún and the wider Yucatán Peninsula are generally considered safe.

Granted, you should never treat the crime problem lightly, but drug gangs rarely target tourists, especially if you avoid illicit activities.

That said, it's important to keep a close watch on your drink in bars and nightclubs. There have been reports of some tourists getting their drinks spiked with so-called date rape drugs. You should also avoid withdrawing money from ATMs at night, and never carry large amounts of cash.

2. Monitor hurricane season and seaweed surges

Cancún's hurricane season runs from June to November, and over the years the city has seen powerful storms cause devastating damage. Always check the latest weather forecast before you board a plane.

Also, keep a close eye on sargassum seaweed surges ( sargazo in Spanish), which can turn Cancún's turquoise waters brown. These blooms leave mounds of smelly, decomposing macroalgae carpeted across otherwise white sands. An influx of seaweed makes swimming and sunbathing downright unpleasant.

If it happens when you're in Cancún, consider doing less beach time and splash around in hotel pools and cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) instead.

The invasive surges occur intermittently, usually from March to August, but they can be unpredictable. The NGO  Red de Monitoreo de Sargazo posts daily updates on beach conditions in Cancún and the nearby Riviera Maya .

3. Tip generously and haggle respectfully

Keep in mind that many Cancún service workers (namely restaurant and hotel employees) depend on tips to supplement miserable wages. In restaurants, leave a 15% gratuity if the service is not already included.

Remember to check the bill carefully, though – some unscrupulous establishments have been known to tack on a "service fee" in the hope that customers unknowingly leave an additional tip.

For airport and hotel porters, tip about M$25 a bag, while for tour guides give an extra 10–20% of the cost of the outing, or perhaps a bit more for full-day excursions. Gas station attendants typically get about M$5 to M$10.

Bartenders, baristas and taxi drivers generally do not expect tips but always welcome them. It's acceptable to haggle with the market and street vendors to a certain degree, but remember that they're just trying to make a living.

4. Don't forget to pack ID, bug spray and casual clothing

To rent a car, you'll need to show a passport, driver's license and credit card. Mexican law requires you to have liability coverage, known in Spanish as daños a terceros .

Citizens from the US, Canada and EU countries, as well as residents from dozens of other nations, do not need visas to enter Mexico as tourists.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes and the sun, pack biodegradable insect repellent, long-sleeve shirts and a pair of pants. You'll definitely need the bug spray when visiting during the muggy wet season from May through October.

Even if you have repellent or sunscreen of the biodegradable variety, do not use them while swimming or snorkeling in fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs and cenotes. Loose-fitting clothes that dry quickly will serve you well for water activities and rainy days.

5. Explore the surrounding countryside

You can usually find plenty of things to do in the hotel zone and downtown Cancún but try to squeeze in at least one trip to see a different side of the Yucatán Peninsula. Seven to 10 days should give you ample time to tour Cancún and beyond.

Venture south to check out ancient ruins, jungle-set swimming holes and small fishing towns along the Riviera Maya, or head east on a day trip to  Valladolid , a colonial city with a rich Maya history.

Alternatively, the nearby islands of  Isla Mujeres and  Isla Holbox provide blissful nature escapes for snorkeling, diving and kayaking adventures.

6. Carry cash and bring a credit and/or debit card

Even though most places in Cancún accept major credit cards, it's always useful to carry some cash, especially in the smaller surrounding towns and islands.

Many hotels, and even some restaurants, accept US dollars, but they normally offer an unfavorable currency exchange rate.

The ubiquitous ATMs accept foreign debit cards but expect to get dinged with international transaction fees for withdrawals.

The same goes for many retail purchases as well. Some major credit cards won't charge such fees, giving you the most bang for your buck. Cancún's ATMs dispense Mexican pesos.

7. All-inclusive resorts are great, but you're missing Cancún's food scene

The hotel zone is home to most of Cancún's all-inclusive hotels, though high-end resorts are also cropping up in Punta Sam and along the sublime  Isla Blanca peninsula, north of downtown.

The all-inclusive experience ranges from luxurious adults-only setups with above-and-beyond service (personal butlers and all) to slightly more affordable family-friendly accommodations.

If you're looking for a safe, self-contained environment with multiple restaurants, bottomless drinks, easy beach access, alluring outdoor pools, and kid-focused activities, book an all-inclusive.

If you prefer the resort experience without the meals and booze, some places offer room-only rates. This pushes you to get out and dive into Cancún's diverse culinary and nightlife scene. Budget travelers will find more options downtown, where hostels and mid-range digs abound.

8. Rideshare services are available in Cancún

The app-based transportation service Uber operates in Cancún, but due to a long-running dispute by taxi union members, drivers and their passengers have faced harassment and, in some cases, attacks.

If you decide to use Uber, do so at your own risk. Do not order a car from the airport, bus station, ferry terminals, or other points where rival taxis may be watching.

For the most affordable transportation from the airport, look for the red ADO bus , which runs frequently from the airport terminals to downtown Cancún's first-class bus terminal. However, if you're staying in the hotel zone, you're better off taking a shuttle or cab.

9. Don't drink the water, and try street food with caution

Cancún's tap water is generally not safe to drink unless you know it's filtered (agua filtrada) . The same goes for drinks prepared with ice; when in doubt go without. Bottled or purified (purificada) water is your best bet to stay hydrated, and you'll need plenty of it to avoid heat exhaustion.

Eating street food can be somewhat dicey in Cancún, but it's a tantalizing risk that many visitors are willing to take.

July is considered high season in Cancun so you will find the city quite lively. Although July is one of the months with the highest probability of rain, this is not always the case, so it doesn't have to put a damper on your plans.

As one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, Cancun welcomes visitors at any time of the year, as it enjoys a semi-tropical climate. That said, the city is also known for its vibrant nightlife and idyllic beaches . But there are many other things to do in Cancun in July that you shouldn't overlook.

To help you plan your Cancun vacation , I've compiled this article with everything that awaits you in this Riviera Maya city during the month of July. I'll tell you all about it below.

1. Don't miss the Virgen del Carmen festivities

In mid-July, Cancun celebrates the festivities in honor of the patron saint of Playa del Carmen, the Virgen del Carmen. Take advantage of the fact that you are in Cancun during the month of July to get to know and experience this colorful tradition first hand.

It is a perfect opportunity to taste the typical Mexican food due to the wide offer available. There are also parades through the streets, games and parties in bars and restaurants throughout the area.

These are days when the streets are filled with people in a festive spirit. In fact, there are almost 10 days of celebration, with free concerts, art exhibitions, attractions and, of course, the processions with the image of the Virgen del Carmen . According to some beliefs, in the Mayan Haab calendar, the year begins on July 26th of each year. July 25 (The Day Out of Time), was the time to consider the year that had passed and the lessons that had been learned.

Although this idea is believed to be erroneous, there are many festivities celebrated in Cancun during these days to commemorate the Mayan New Year. If you visit Cancun during these July days, take some of the tours and excursions to some of the main archaeological sites in the region , as you will be able to attend the festive rituals.

3. Swim with whale sharks in Cancun

If you want to see whale sharks in Cancun, the best month of the year is July. In addition, you will be able to see other marine life, such as sea turtles and even dolphins .

Whale sharks are not dangerous, but you will be surprised by their enormous size. They are the largest fish in the sea, with a length of between 12 and 15 meters (40 and 50 feet) .

The whale shark season in Cancun runs from May 17 to September 17, but the best time to see them in Cancun is in July and August . In fact, a festival is held in Isla Mujeres between June and July with many activities.

The main objective is to make visitors and locals aware of the challenges this animal faces to survive, as well as to highlight its relevance to the local ecosystem .

The entire coast of the Riviera Maya is dotted with cenotes. Some are open air and surrounded by vegetation, while others are part of vast cave systems and subway rivers , where you can dive or snorkel on a guided tour.

There are about 6000 cenotes in Yucatán. Near Puerto Morelos is the Cenotes Route where you will find Cenote Sol y Luna, Cenote Verde Lucero, Cenote Zapote and Cenote La Noria. Cenote Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are near the ruins of Tulum . There is usually a small fee to enter and you can rent life jackets and snorkeling masks.

The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are located about 2.5 hours from Cancun, but it's a visit you can't miss, no matter what time of the year you travel. In July, the ruins are highly recommended, as the weather is good and makes the visit more comfortable and enjoyable.

The ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza, famous for its pyramid ruins, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World .

If it rains during your trip to Cancun in July, you can take advantage of that day to visit indoor places. The city offers plenty of options for when it rains . One of the best visits you can make is to the Mayan Museum of Cancun.

It is one of the most important art and anthropology museums in the city, with almost 400 exhibits to learn more about the Mayan culture.

This ancient empire was one of the most advanced of its time , so a visit to this museum is a good way to learn more about its history and culture.

8. Take a refreshing visit to the Underwater Museum

Another visit you can make in July if it rains is to the Museo Subacuático , or MUSA. It is an underwater art museum located between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. It has more than 500 sculptures that were designed and installed to encourage coral growth and replenish the habitat of tropical marine life .

9. Get close to the sea turtles

The beaches surrounding the Riviera Maya are some of the best places in the world to see sea turtles. You will see the giant leatherback turtles (the largest turtle in the world), although the most common are loggerhead, green and hawksbill.

From May to October, female sea turtles come ashore every night to dig nests and lay dozens of eggs each. The eggs hatch and the hatchlings swim out to sea between July and December.

In Cancun, resorts participate in sea turtle conservation efforts , and allow guests to participate or observe all stages, including collecting the eggs in a protective enclosure.

10. Enjoy an excursion to the Mayan ruins of Tulum

Excursions to Tulum from Cancun are among the most popular in the area. July, being a quieter month, is a good time to visit the area without rushing. These excursions offer a unique getaway where you will find a little bit of everything: cenotes, Mayan ruins and paradisiacal beaches .

As for temperatures, July temperatures hover around 31 or 32°C in Cancun. When the sun sets, temperatures in Cancun drop, but not much. Nighttime temperatures in Cancun average 26 or 27°C, although the humidity is also not usually as high as during the day.

The Usual Suspects  

It's no surprise that London is the most searched city for American travelers this year.

\America's love affair with the UK capital shows no signs of abating, and for good reason.  

London is a brilliant destination and home to some of the best museums and art galleries in the world. It also boasts a rich cultural heritage, fascinating historical attractions, and incredible architecture.

London is a diverse and welcoming city where tourists can be amazed by the huge variety of things to see and do.  

What's more, the shared language between the UK and the U.S. makes it an incredibly easy vacation destination for American travelers, particularly those making their first overseas trip. 

London is followed in 2 nd place by its near-neighbor Paris, the city of love, which is also a perennially popular destination for U.S. travelers.

Paris is regularly listed as the number one bucket list destination for American tourists.

The popularity of Paris this year is also being bolstered as it is the host city for the Olympic Games this summer.

Paris is preparing for an estimated 15 million visitors to arrive for the games this summer, an incredible number given the city's population of 12.4 million.  

Unless you already have tickets or are a huge sports fan, Paris is best avoided between July and August this year.

But Tokyo's unique cultural experiences, diverse range of activities, and position in modern pop culture mean that people just can't get enough of it right now.

Some of the must-visit attractions in the country include the Meiji Jingu Shrine, strolling around Ueno Park, or exploring the electronic wonderland of Akihabara.  

If Tokyo is on your must-visit list, then the good news is that there's never been a better time to visit Japan than as a U.S. traveler.

The yen has dropped to a 34-year low against the dollar.  

Tokyo has a reputation for being one of the world's most expensive cities but the weak value of the Yen means that goods, services, attractions and even hotel stays are cheaper than they have been for a long time.  

In 4 th place is Rome and in 5 th place is New York. A spot that is much closer to home if the idea of flying half way across the world doesn't appeal to you.  

An Unexpected Drop  

Perhaps another surprise is that Cancun has dropped into 6 th place on the list.

America is by far the most popular country of origin among international air passengers to Mexico in general and Cancun in particular. 4.2 million Americans visited the region in 2023.  

As long as there is still sand on the beaches, Americans will continue to head to Cancun in their droves. The number of air links between the two countries are considerable and flights tend to be affordable too.  

So why has the city dropped to be the 6 th most popular for American travelers when it was in 2 nd place last year? One thought is that some American tourists feel anxious about visiting Mexico right now due to reports of crime and warnings from the U.S. government.  

In response to these concerns, the Mexican authorities have increased police and military presence in the city.

And crime rates in Cancun remain low, making it one of the safest resort cities in Mexico.
