Cannes Cruise Port – Everything You Need To Know

Are you headed towards Cannes Cruise Port on your Mediterranean cruise and need some help planning your day? Then I got you covered!

The Cannes Cruise Ship Port is quite special – since it mostly services via tender boats. I have just returned from my cruise to Cannes, and I know all about it.

To help you get an overview of the port, the city, and the possible shore excursions, I have created this ultimate guide for you!

Let’s get to it!

Distance Tender Quay – Le Sequet (Old Town): 500 m (7 min)

Distance Tender Quay – La Croisette: 1000 m (15 min)

The Cannes cruise port is located in the city of Cannes, on the French Riviera. It’s situated in the heart of the city, near the famous Promenade de la Croisette.

The port is used by smaller cruise ships and luxury yachts, as larger ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the port.

The tender quays are only a couple of steps away from the town center and are filled with restaurants, cafés, and shops.

map showing the location of the cannes cruise port and where tender boats dock

If you just want a quick overview of what you can expect on your shore day at Cannes, you are in the right spot. Here are a couple of ideas on how to fill your day in Cannes:

  • Explore Cannes by foot with a walking tour (no transportation needed, free)
  • Take the ferry to Saint Marguerite Island ( around USD 18 pp)
  • Go to Monaco (train, rental car, or organized tour)
  • Go to Saint Tropez (ferry, organized tour)
  • Go to Nice (train, car, organized tour)
  • Tour the French Riviera

How you choose to spend your day in Cannes is up to your preferences and how much time you have. If the shore day is short, I would opt for a walking tour of Cannes or to see the Island of Saint Marguerite. On a longer day, I would personally book a tour of the French Riviera to see all the highlights.

This is a very popular option to spend a day from the Cannes Cruise Port. I have written a designated post about my preferred route of walking through Cannes.

Essentially, I suggest the following stops:

  • Eglisé Notre Dame d’Esperance
  • Marche Forvillé
  • Lunch at Rue Saint Antoine
  • IGY Vieux Port de Cannes
  • Palais des Festivals et des Congrès
  • La Croisette de Cannes

This was the option I chose on my first cruise stop to Cannes, and we were super happy with the itinerary. It took us about 4 hours to complete. This option is completely free.

The ferry to Saint Marguerite Island (Île Sainte-Marguerite) departs from the port of Cannes. It takes off right next to the tender boat quay.

The journey takes about 15 minutes. Prices vary depending on the season, but a round-trip ticket is typically around €18 for adults and €10 for children.

Once on the island, you can explore the Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned.

The island is also known for its beautiful nature , with marked trails for walking and spots for picnicking. The clear waters around the island are great for swimming and snorkeling.

Monaco is a stunning country with the beautiful city of Monte Carlo right next to France. You might know it from the Formula 1 race or the fancy casinos. To get from Cannes to Monaco, you have several options:

Train: The most convenient way is to take a train from Cannes to Monaco. The journey takes about an hour, and trains run frequently throughout the day. The train station in Monaco is Monaco-Monte Carlo.

Rental Car: If you’re driving, take the A8 motorway. The drive takes about an hour, depending on traffic. Monte Carlo is not known for its amazing parking, so I wouldn’t do that.

Private Transfer or Organized Tour: this is my preferred option, the tour provider will make sure that you are back in time for the ship to leave.

saint tropez street with colorful houses and lots of pink flowers along the way one of the best day trips from cannes cruise port

Saint-Tropez is famous for several reasons, and you should definitely consider visiting from Cannes cruise port.

Saint-Tropez is known for its stunning beaches, particularly Pampelonne Beach , which is lined with trendy beach clubs and restaurants. The town is also famous for its upscale lifestyle, full of fancy clubs, restaurants, and boutiques.

But the town has still retained its old-world charm with its picturesque old port, cobblestone streets, and pastel-colored houses.

The easiest way to go to Saint Tropez is with a ferry . It takes about 2.5 hours from Cannes cruise port. Alternatively, you can book a shore excursion that will take you there.

To visit Nice from Cannes for a day trip, you can take a train, which is the most convenient option. The journey takes around 30 minutes.

Once in Nice, stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais , a picturesque walkway along the Mediterranean coast. Explore the colorful Old Town (Vieux Nice) with its narrow streets, cute little markets, and charming cafes.

Don’t miss the chance to climb Castle Hill for some awesome views of the city and the sea. If you have the time, you can check out the Matisse Museum or the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

stunning view from nice viewpoint over the old post with lots of yachts and some beautiful houses in the harbor

If you can’t decide between all those fabulous options, I suggest you book a guided day tour through the French Riviera. You’ll visit villages like Eze or Villefranche, which are super cute as well.

There are lots of awesome, cruise-friendly tours out there that combine the loveliest spots of the French Riviera from Cannes Cruise Port.

This is slightly more expensive , but if you are not on a budget , I would suggest this option for sure. That way, you get to make the most out of your day on the French Riviera.

This post sums up your options from Cannes Cruise Port. As we have learned, this is a tender port, so you’ll end up right in the middle of the old port.

From there, you can either explore the charming town of Cannes on foot or book one of the guided day trips to Monaco, Nice, Saint Tropez, or Eze I suggested.

Of course, you can also organize these tours yourself. I would kinda advise against that, you don’t want to miss your cruise ship in the evening.

I hope you enjoy Cannes Cruise Ship Port as much as I did. Not sure if you’ll love it? Find out if Cannes is Worth Visiting. An Honest Review

Sightseeing:

Located on the world-famous Côte d'Azur, this resort town boasts an impressive collection of museums and art galleries, botanical gardens, Gothic-style churches and a theater district that hosts the renowned international film festival. Those less interested in the arts can check out the casinos, discos, and nightclubs that make nightlife in Cannes legendary. Sandy Mediterranean beaches draw sunbathers from all of Europe, and the shimmering blue waters fill with sailboats in the summer. It's no wonder Cannes is known as the "star" of the French Riviera.

Cannes can easily be explored on foot. Just west of the Vieux Port is the oldest part of town, Le Suquet, an area with narrow streets with shops, restaurants, a medieval church, and a 12th-century castle, which now houses the Musée de la Castre.

The thing where the action is, lies in the opposite direction: the palm tree-lined Boulevard de la Croisette: eastwards from the Palais des Festivals (the Cannes Film Festival in may) with luxury hotels, casinos and marinas full with expensive yachts. Just have a drink at one of the many cafés and restaurants here and watch the beautiful people who as always come to Cannes.

Covered Market (Marché Forville) For a spectacular eating and viewing food experience, no other market in Cannes beats this for scale and variety. The market itself is at the west end of rue Meynardiers, one of the Cote's best gourmand streets.

1. Cannes City Sightseeing

The renowned Promenade de la Croisette (also known as Boulevard de la Croisette or La Croisette ) is the famous waterfront boulevard that extends 2 km along the city’s coastline.

The boulevard is home to the prestigious Palais des Festivals et des Congrès , a convention center that hosts the Cannes Film Festival, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and the NRJ Music Award.

The famous La Croisette is also home to luxurious hotels (such as Carlton, Majestic, JW Marriott Cannes and Martinez), upscale restaurants and expensive shops that stretch along the road and overlook a beautiful sandy beach.

Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

Besides the glittering La Croisette, Cannes also has its old town named Le Suquet , home to climbing cobbled streets and a medieval town vibe.

Le Suquet is the original fishermen’s residential area with very old houses, some of them more than 400 years old. This area is pedestrianized and packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops centered around Rue Saint Antoine and Rue de Suquet.

The old town is hilly and there are the remains of the medieval castle of the monks of Lérins at the top, known as Château de la Castre . The medieval castle is located on Place de la Castre from where you can enjoy the outstanding views of the city and the Bay of Cannes.

It also houses le Musée de la Castre (aka Musée des explorations du monde) in its iconic tower that you can also climb (109 steps) and admire the 360-degree view of Cannes. T

he museum features collections from five continents including primitive arts of Himalaya-Tibet, Oceania, musical instruments of the world (Africa, Asia, Oceania and America), pre-Columbian America and Mediterranean antiquities and also orientalist paintings and objects from the 19 th century.

Next to La Castre, you’ll also find Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance , a historic stone church dating from the 1600s. The area around the castle is absolutely beautiful and if you want to capture the best photos of Cannes – this is the perfect spot!

Cannes, French Riviera

At the bottom of Le Suquet, you’ll also find Marché Forville , an indoor market that sells flowers and fresh local produce where you can indulge in typically French food and enjoy the local vibe.

Cannes also boasts a beautiful sandy Croisette Beach that lines the Boulevard de la Croisette, where you’ll find beach facilities, eateries and cafes. The main beach (Croisette) is located on your right side upon exiting the Old Port, while on the left side you’ll find another less crowded public beach ( Plage du Midi ).

When exploring Cannes, keep in mind that La Croisette is flat and easy to handle, while Le Suquet is cobbled and challenging to climb for people with walking difficulties. It takes only 10 minutes to reach the castle from the Old Port, however, it’s all uphill and there are dozens of staircases to manage.

The gorgeous city of Nice is located 35 km/22 miles (a 45-minute drive) east of Cannes. With its beautiful Promenade des Anglais , Place Masséna , the old town ( Old Nice ) and numerous landmarks, squares, markets, eateries and shops, Nice boasts a Mediterranean vibe and is one of the most visited cities on the French Riviera. It consists of several administrative areas including Monaco City and Monte Carlo, the two most famous destinations of incredible wealth and beauty.

Monaco City sits on “The Rock”, a 62-meter (203 ft) rock overlooking the Port Hercules and the Mediterranean Sea. This is where all major tourist attractions are located, including the Prince’s Palace , Immaculate Conception Cathedral , Oceanographic Museum , St Martins Garden and others.

Monte Carlo , with its iconic Monte Carlo Casino, lies a few kilometers further and attracts gamblers, tourists, rich and famous from all around the world. Read more in detail about Monaco and Monte Carlo in Villefranche (Nice) Cruise Port Guide (+ get useful, practical info and tips)

With its fortified old town, star-shaped Fort Carré , Port Vauban marina with its luxury superyachts and forested Cap d’Antibes peninsula, Antibes ranks among the top-visited destinations on Côte d’Azur.

5. Saint Paul de Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a charming medieval village located 28 km/17 miles (a 1-hour drive) from Cannes cruise port. The hilltop village has long been a favorite place of notable artists, writers, painters and poets who used to come here and seek inspiration.

Today, the village is known for its numerous art galleries and museums (such as the iconic Fondation Maeght ), the 17-century Saint Charles-Saint Claude chapel , historic buildings and cobbled streets filled with traditional eateries, cafes and souvenir shops.

8. Îles de Lérins

The Lérins Islands are an archipelago that consists of four islands off the coast of Cannes, located a 15-minute ferry ride from Quai Laubeuf in Cannes Old Port. The Île Sainte-Marguerite (Saint Margaret Island) and the Île Saint-Honorat (Saint Honorat Island) are the two largest ones, while the other two are uninhabited.

Saint Margaret is the largest island famous for its Fort Royal , the imposing 17th-century fortress with prison cells in one of which the mysterious “Man with the Iron Mask” was held in the same century. Fort Royal nowadays houses Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea) featuring items recovered from ancient Roman and Saracen shipwrecks.

Saint Honorat is the second-largest island and is known for the  Abbey of Lérins and the 15th-century fortified monastery where you can buy various monastic goods, including wine and olive oil produced on the island.

The ferries to Lérins Islands usually depart hourly from Cannes harbour. If you decide to visit the islands, I highly suggest you ask for more information at the tourist information office in the port.

Cannes Cruise Port Guide Info

A paradise for the rich and famous, home to the Cannes Film Festival and the world’s most luxurious hotels, yachts, and restaurants, Cannes is one of the most prestigious cities on the French Côte d'Azur and an attractive Mediterranean cruise port.  The port of Cannes is small and can accommodate only smaller ships. Large cruise ships normally anchor in the bay and tender boats are used to transfer the cruise passengers ashore. Tender boats dock at Quai Max Laubeuf, from where you can easily reach the main historical highlights as well as the glamorous Promenade de la Croisette – a waterfront avenue where the world-famous Palais des Festivals is located.

The Cannes Film Festival is taking place in this magnificent, modern building that also houses a convention center. Besides the Palais des Festivals, the promenade is filled with luxurious 5-star hotels, high-class designer stores, expensive restaurants, casinos, and extravagant yachts. There are two beaches near the port: upon exiting the port area, turn left and you’ll spot a lovely sandy beach - Plage du Midi, a relaxing place ideal for families. On your right side, after you pass the marina you’ll reach Croisette Beach, a long public beach with a white strip of sand and crystal clear water, as well as a few private beach areas.

A medieval tower of the castle houses Musée de la Castre, an art and ethnography museum well worth visiting if you want to soak up some history and culture of this part of France. If you walk a bit further, you’ll reach the Church of Our Lady of Esperance – the 16th century stone church featuring a beautiful clock-tower.

Both the castle and the church are located in the park where you can walk around and admire the wonderful views of the Bay of Cannes.  This quarter is very old and features four centuries-old houses, a market, and ancient streets full of restaurants and cafes, among which Rue du Suquet and Rue du Suquet are the most visited ones. Guide Fred was a very knowledgeable tour guide, and as he is a Monagasque and currently lives in Nice, was perfect for the history and locale. Eze is a UNESCO preserved old medieval village with great views. Quite hilly and moderately difficult walk from parking site. Gardens at top beautiful with great view, but a little pricey as separate entrance. Fragonard perfume factory store visit of little interest to me but wife enjoyed it. - Short ride from Eze to Monaco, again well-informed by guide Fred, who knew all the shortcuts and exactly how much time to spend in each location; all times were appropriate. We drove all over Monte Carlo, including the entire Formula I race course. Beautiful views - old city of monte Carlo by Prine's palace are quite touristy. Casino, shopping, hotels, etc. were interesting. Overall great 1/2 day cruise excursion in a clean, well-air conditioned Mercedes van. Pick up at Villefranche port parking lot. Would recommend highly. Read more Written September 28, 2022

How to Get to Cannes from the Cruise Port

Cannes Cruise Port is located in the old port (Vieux Port), near the city center and the famous Boulevard de la Croisette. Most cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender their passengers ashore to the quay, where you will find the Cannes cruise terminal. Above all, you should plan ahead and try to get on a tender in advance of when you want to get on land!

Tip: Register for one of the earliest tender times for the easiest and most crowd-free experience.

To get to the town, you have the option of walking or taking a taxi. You can find the taxi stand in front of the terminal building. Additionally, there is also a local bus service that costs one euro. You can also explore the city by trolley (Le Train du Cinema), which stops at La Croisette, the closest stop to the Cannes cruise port terminal.

In my opinion, the BEST way to see Cannes is with a walking tour. I LOVE walking tours. You join a group, get escorted around, and hear about all the sights. What to do Riviera hosts a “free walking tour” Tuesday to Sunday at 10:30 a.m. I’ve taken this awesome tour and learned so much about the history and the culture of Cannes. I cannot recommend it enough! Book ahead!

Cannes also has a Petit Train but it does not offer much and does not have the best reviews.

Wander down the Boulevard de la Croisette

One of the first things you should do in Cannes is to stroll along the Boulevard de la Croisette! This is the iconic promenade that curves along the seafront. The Croisette is lined with palm trees, elegant boutiques, chic cafes, and prestigious hotels, such as the Carlton, the Majestic, and the JW Marriott. You’ll definitely want a photo here!

You can admire the views of the Mediterranean Sea, the sandy beaches, and the yachts in the marina. You can also spot some of the famous landmarks of Cannes, such as the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the film festival is held.

Also see the Casino Barrière (although located on Rue du Maréchal Foch), where you can try your luck at the games.

Experience the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès is the heart of the Cannes Film Festival, the world’s most prestigious cinema event. It takes place every May. The Palais is a modern building that hosts screenings, ceremonies, conferences, and exhibitions throughout the year.

You can visit the Palais and see the famous red carpet, the auditoriums, the press rooms, and the star dressing rooms. You can also take a photo with the handprints of celebrities on the Chemin des Étoiles, or join a guided tour to learn more about the history and secrets of the festival.

Explore the charm of Le Suquet (Old Town)

Le Suquet is the old quarter of Cannes, located on a hill overlooking the bay. It is the original site of the town, dating back to Roman times. Le Suquet has a medieval atmosphere, with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and quaint shops and restaurants. To me, the neighborhood seemed like such a contrast too the “new” glamorous Cannes.

You can visit the Musée de la Castre, a 12th-century castle that houses an art collection and offers panoramic views from its tower. I highly recommend going up there!

You can also see the Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance, a 16th-century church with a Gothic bell tower and beautiful stained-glass windows.

Cannes Cruise Port - Le Suquet

Visit the vibrant Marché Forville

If you want to experience the local culture and cuisine of Cannes, you should visit the Marché Forville, the main market of the city. The market is located near the old quarter of Le Suquet, at the foot of a hill overlooking the bay. It offers a range of fresh and quality products, such as fruits, vegetables, cheese, bread, meat, fish, and flowers.

You can also sample some of the local delicacies, such as socca (a chickpea pancake), pissaladière (an onion and anchovy tart), tapenade (an olive paste), or ravioli Niçois (stuffed pasta with cheese and spinach). The market is open every day from 7:30 am to 1 pm, except on Mondays when it becomes a flea market.

French food is so fresh delicious – make sure to pick up at least a snack while in port. My recommendation is truffle cheese!

Discover the beauty of Lérins Islands

The Lérins Islands are a group of four islands off the coast of Cannes, but only two of them, Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, are open to visitors.

Sainte-Marguerite is the largest island. Is has a pine forest, sandy beaches, and a royal fort that may have housed the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask. The island also has a museum that displays archaeological and historical exhibits.

Saint-Honorat is the smallest island, where monks have lived for over 16 centuries. The island has a monastery, a church, and several chapels, as well as an ancient fortress. The monks also produce wine and liqueurs from the island’s vineyards and plants. The Lérins Islands are a beautiful and peaceful destination that offers a contrast to the busy city of Cannes.

Cruise lines, like Virgin Voyages, offer excursions around the Lérins Islands , as well.

Where to Eat and Drink in Cannes

I’ve compiled a list of some of the top restaurants. If you’d rather eat onboard, keep scrolling to the next section!

Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barrière

This stunning seaside spot is both a beach club and a chic restaurant, turning up the elegant atmosphere in the evening. If you go for sunset, you’ll watch the incredible view from your table, and you can walk along the sand.

Sunset photo from Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barrière in Cannes

The food is based in meats and seafood, and the menu changes seasonally. The service is impeccable, and food is fresh, so this is a must-eat on a beautiful evening or for lunch on the beach.

La Palme d’Or

On the first floor of the Hotel Martinez in Cannes, you can find La Palme d’Or, a two-star Michelin restaurant that serves sophisticated and inventive cuisine. The chef, Christian Sinicropi, creates dishes that are both tasty and artistic, using ingredients that are fresh and local.

The restaurant is named after the Palme d’Or award, which is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, and its dishes are inspired by the Mediterranean and the golden palm symbol. You can admire the views of the bay, the decor, and the service, which are all elegant and refined. La Palme d’Or is a favorite spot for celebrities and film enthusiasts, but it is also very pricey and needs a booking.

Astoux et Brun

If you are looking for a seafood restaurant in Cannes, you might want to try Astoux et Brun. It is a family business that started in 1953 and is situated near the old port and the Palais du Festival. Astoux et Brun is a warm and lively place, where you can savor the authentic flavor of Mediterranean cuisine.

You can sit on the terrace and enjoy the view of the sea while tasting fresh and quality seafood, such as oysters, lobsters, mussels, and fish, that are bought from the local market. You have a choice of dishes, such as seafood platters, grilled fish, bouillabaisse, or paella.

L’éponyme d’Éric

If you are looking for a fine dining experience in Cannes, you might want to visit L’éponyme d’Éric. It’s owned and managed by the chef Éric Houard. He creates exquisite dishes, inspired by his Corsican roots and Mediterranean cuisine.

You can taste some of Houard’s specialties, such as foie gras, lamb, duck, or fish, served with fresh and seasonal vegetables. You can also indulge in some of his homemade desserts, such as tiramisu, crème brûlée, or chocolate cake. L’éponyme d’Éric is a friendly and cozy place, where you can savor a tasty and generous meal.

Le Roof

Le Roof is a rooftop lounge bar and restaurant at the Five Seas Hotel with an incredible panoramic view. It’s near the Palais des Festivals in Cannes Relax in the pool, enjoy cocktails and champagnes, listen to lounge music, and try the creative dishes and finger food of chef Lori Moreau. Le Roof is open daily from noon to midnight, and you can book a table online or by phone.

More to Explore  While Visiting Cannes Cruise Port

Relax on la croisette beach  .

La Croisette Beach is the most famous and popular beach in Cannes, located along the Boulevard de la Croisette. It is a long and wide sandy beach, with clear and calm water. You can sunbathe, swim, or play some beach games.

You can also rent a sunbed, a parasol, or a towel from one of the many private beach clubs, such as the Carlton, the Majestic, or the Martinez. Look up rates in advance – these beach clubs get pricey during peak season.

Enjoy some food and drinks from their restaurants and bars. La Croisette Beach is a great place to enjoy the sun and the sea, but it can also be very crowded and expensive.

La Croisette, a must at Cannes Cruise Port

Admire yachts at Port Pierre Canto

Port Pierre Canto is the second port of Cannes, dedicated to sailing and yachting activities. It is located between the Croisette and the Bay of Cannes. You’ll see some of the most luxurious and impressive yachts in the world.

You can admire the yachts from the quay, or take a boat tour to see them up close. You can also visit the Yacht Club de Cannes, which organizes regattas and events throughout the year. Port Pierre Canto is a place where you can enjoy the glamour and elegance of Cannes, as well as the beauty of the sea.

Shop for Unique Finds

If you’ve forgotten anything for your trip and need to run into a mainstream store, Rue d’Antibes is your best bet for any of your ports. It has 800 stores on the stretch. There are more stores close by – many familiar brands like Zara and Sephora for your needs. Rue d’Antibes is the busiest street in Cannes!

One of the best places to shop for unique finds is Rue Meynadier, a pedestrian street that runs parallel to Rue d’Antibes. Here you will find a mix of local shops, delicatessens, and specialty stores that sell everything from cheese and wine to perfume and jewelry.

You can also browse through the stalls of the flea market that takes place every Monday at the Marché Forville, where you can find vintage clothing, books, records, and other treasures.

If you are looking for more upscale and designer shopping, head to the Boulevard de la Croisette. Here you’ll find all the major French luxury brands, as well as famous names such as Gucci, Armani, and Prada. This is the place to splurge on some high-end fashion or accessories, or just window shop and admire the glamorous displays!

For art lovers, Cannes has several galleries and museums that showcase local and international artists. You can visit the Galerie de Cannes, which features contemporary paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Galerie Hurtebize specializes in modern and abstract art.

You can also check out the Musée de la Castre, a museum of world explorations that displays paintings, ceramics, musical instruments, and ethnographic objects from various cultures and periods.

Experience Musée de la Castre

Musée de la Castre is a museum located in the old town of Cannes, inside the former castle of the monks of Lérins. It was opened in 1877. Musée de la Castre idisplays a collection of paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, and ethnographic objects from various cultures and periods.

You can also climb the 109 steps of the medieval tower, which offers a breathtaking view of the city, the bay, and the islands.

See the Painted Walls

Walk around Cannes and see the many beautiful murals. The most famous is the Cannes Cinema painted wall.
