Set Your Sights on Local Wildlife

Speaking of birds, you can also see rockhopper penguins when you look down on Hornos Island's beaches, and you may see an albatross when you look up. Search for humpback whales when you look down off the dock, ideally during lulls when the water is not so rough. Then, try to spot sea lions lazing on the rocks — their mousy color often camouflages them — or consider bringing binoculars if you hope to be able to see king crabs from afar. Searching for wildlife is one of the best things to do in Cape Horn, Chile.

Cape Horn and Drake Passage

Thanks to its location—on one of the southernmost points in South America—Cape Horn has played a major role in navigational history. The Strait of Magellan to the north was discovered first, but that route’s narrow width was challenging to navigate. Cape Horn, discovered by the Dutch in 1615, became the primary route for trade ships traveling from Europe or the east side of the Americas to the American West Coast.  Cape Horn marks the entrance to the Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans meet. Until the Panama Canal opened in 1914, this was one of the planet’s major shipping routes. Strong winds, currents, waves and icebergs made the passage fairly treacherous in the days of sailing ships. Even today, “rounding the Horn” remains a challenge for the many yacht races that pass through its icy waters. Hornos, the island where Cape Horn is located, may look desolate and treeless, but it’s home to a vast number of gulls and other seabirds.

As a woman preparing for this voyage, you’ll want to ensure that your packing list is not only practical but also stylish and versatile. From the sun-soaked beaches of Rio de Janeiro to the rugged beauty of Patagonia, South America offers a range of environments to explore, each with its unique clothing and accessory requirements.

In this packing guide, I’ll take you through the essentials you need to pack to stay comfortable, look fabulous, and make the most of your South American cruise around Cape Horn. I’ll provide you with expert tips and insights to help you pack smartly for this once-in-a-lifetime journey. To prepare you for this adventure, I will highlight the most important considerations when packing for your once-in-a-lifetime trip. In my article, How to Prepare for a Cruise Around South America and Cape Horn I provide an in-depth breakdown of what you can expect on a cruise of this type. So, there are no unrealistic expectations of what you will find in the following paragraphs, I should make it clear that this is not going to be a guide to an Instagrammable wardrobe. This packing list for your South American sailing is a practical how-to guide.

You will still look cute in photos but I’m not going to tell you to pack flowy dresses you will wear once. No cutesy hats. You won’t be packing 15 pairs of shoes or different sunglasses for every day. But since the age of cruisers to South America tends to skew older, you probably aren’t so young that you’re concerned with the Insta-worthy shots. Ah, the beauty of being a bit older and wiser!!

What to Know Before Packing for Your South American Cruise

Probably the most important thing you should know is that most South American Cruises are scheduled for the southern hemisphere’s summer month, beginning in November through early March. This makes a South American cruise ideal for those in the Northern Hemisphere who want to escape the cold winter weather.

Pack for All Four Seasons

However, despite it being summer in South America you are going to need some winter attire because it gets quite chilly at the “End of the World.” But no worries, it won’t be cold the entire time. On this cruise, you get to experience all four seasons throughout your sailing. This is one of the things that makes packing so challenging.

You should expect the daytime South American temperature to range from the upper 80s and 90s in Buenos Aires and as low as the 30s when sailing through the Strait of Magellan. This being the situation, you will need everything from swimsuits, sunscreen, and sandals to hats, scarves, and mittens.

Packing for Formal Nights on a South American Cruise

Most South American Cruises around the Horn are 10 days to 2 weeks. On a cruise of this length, you can expect two formal nights. This means you will need two outfits that fit the occasion. But formal nights are nowhere near as buttoned-up as it once was when sailing. This is good news in terms of packing.

What to Wear on Excursions

Excursions in the ports of call range from city walks involving museums and cultural sites to trekking on glaciers and kayaking. Expect to do walking in a variety of conditions including uneven cobblestone streets and hiking trails. But don’t fret. One good sturdy pair of walking shoes will do the job for most conditions.

How to Pack Light for Your Cruise Around the Horn

One challenge I have found when packing for any cruise is they often depart from cooler climates to a warmer destination. On this cruise you can expect just the opposite, you’ll go from warm to cold and back to warm again.  These weather extremes make packing for a Cape Horn cruise especially difficult. No worries as I’m here to help. But let me be candid: you will likely need something larger than a carry-on. And if you don’t, then you should be writing this post.

Pack Versatile Pieces

The key to packing light for a cruise is layering and clothes that do double duty. That means packing sleeveless or short-sleeved knit tops. They are great for warm days and can act as a base layer when you arrive at those cooler destinations. Plus, if you have the right pieces you can dress them up for dressier occasions like dinner in the main dining room or the club at night.

Also, typically, they are packable and require little or no ironing. If they do need some attention, usually hanging them in the bathroom while showering will steam out most of the wrinkles. If you need more, a spritz with a bit of Downy Wrinkle reducer.

Skirts Rather than Shorts

I recommend packing skirts rather than shorts as they are super versatile. Wear them instead of shorts on hot days then pair them with leggings on cold days on land and nights on the ship. The right skirt will take you from day to night and even double as formal attire. Pair a black skirt with a simple top and pretty accessories to dress it up for the evening. (More about accessorizing in a moment.)

While the picture above was not taken on a cruise this is something I might pack for a South American cruise. It’s a simple blouse that takes up almost no space in the suitcase, a plain black skirt that I can wear day or night, and black leggings underneath. All of these items can do double duty and that’s key. The skirt and the leggings can be worn independently giving you more options.

Opt for Neutral Colors

My second trick for minimizing the weight of my luggage is choosing neutral colors so you can mix and match. I try to stick to grey, black, white, and tan bottoms. But if you are like me, you probably like to have a splash of color too. I typically bring brightly colored tops and choose colorful accessories.

Stick to Classic Pieces

I love cardigans because they add warmth and can usually be casual or dressy. Take a style tip from Audrey Hepburn, pair a classic cardigan with pearls and you can’t go wrong.

You can never go wrong with classics. Dress it up or keep it casual.

Pack a couple of scarves/pashmina. One to wear around your neck on those cold days (mornings in particular) and as a sarong over your swimsuit. Another to throw over your shoulders on a formal night. 

What to Wear in the Evening on a South America Cruise

Another challenge often encountered when packing for a Cape Horn cruise, but especially the longer ones is preparing for formal nights. If you are anything like me, it’s not so much about dressing up for dinner and photos as it is packing and lugging formal attire.

Keep to the Basics for Formal Nights

After, seven cruises I can say I have gotten better about this. Fortunately, formal wear doesn’t necessarily mean evening gowns and tuxes anymore (unless you are on a high-end luxury cruise). This helps a lot. These days a smart black skirt and a black sheath dress will be plenty. With the right coordinating pieces and accessories, you’re ready for the two formal nights on these longer cruises.

Limit Your Jewelry

I only bring a few pieces of jewelry on a cruise. A string of pearls and earrings are so elegant and can dress up any outfit. I also pack a few 36 to 40-inch beaded necklaces and a shortener enhancer clasp to twist and shorten the strands.

For a less formal evening, pair a skirt with a simple top and pretty accessories to dress it up. This will easily take you from dinner to a show or dancing and the casino.

What to Wear For Warm Weather

How to dress during sea days and warm weather.

For the first few days of your Cape Horn cruise, you won’t need much more than your swimsuit, a hat to shield your face from the sun, and some sunscreen during your at-sea days. For shore excursions, you are going to want to dress appropriately for the activity you have planned.

Capris and skirts typically make more sense than shorts for packing light since they tend to be more versatile. One of the benefits of capris and skirts is they can often be dressed up a bit more than shorts. Of course, skirts and capris may not be practical for all excursions so you will need to consider this. For those ports of call, shorts, jeans, leggings, and yoga pants are a better bet.

For warm days and excursions pack a few tank tops or tees (I’m in the process of converting to all-wool tees for their all-season wearability, durability, and eco-conscious fibers). Using my packing list you will have options that work for any excursion.

What to Pack for Cold Weather Around the Horn

I’ve already told you that you are going to have some cold days. You will need to pack for this. And as much as you will be tempted, try to avoid packing bulky clothes. Here are the must-haves

• Wool socks (I like Woolie Boolie or SmartWool )
• Gloves or mittens
• Hat and/or ear warmers
• Base layers, under other clothes, I like Cuddl Duds and SmartWool products.
• Fleece, a sweatshirt, or a pullover sweater
• Jacket (I like puffer jackets)

Base layers are critical for cold weather. They should be thin and made of a wicking fabric (something I’ve come to appreciate as a cyclist) such as wool or polyester blend. Both fabrics are extremely packable, and warm when worn with a heavier top layer. Also, because they are thick enough not to be seen through, you can get away with wearing them as a top with yoga pants on transitional days.

This super versatile wool top will be your go-to item throughout your cruise and beyond. It’s sure to become a favorite in your wardrobe.

I’ve already suggested packing cardigan sweaters. You are going to need them when you make your way around the Horn and even in Ushuaia. If you want to save the cardigan for evenings, then you may want to pack a fleece, a sweatshirt, or a pullover sweater. This depends upon your aesthetic and the space in your suitcase.

Packable Puffer Jacket

Leave the heavy coat at home. This compact, lightweight puffer will keep you warm without the bulk.

Finally, you are going to need a jacket of some kind. I’m a fan of puffer jackets that can be rolled up and packed without taking up much space. But you are going to want to make sure that your jacket is warm and will block the cold wind. It gets chilly standing out on the ship’s deck as you travel around the Horn and through the Chilean Fjords oohing and aahing at the glaciers and penguin colonies. Of course, you don’t need to stand outside but for me, it was part of the experience.

What Shoes Should I Pack for My South America Cruise?

This is something I always struggle with but don’t go crazy with shoes. At most, you will need three pairs and you will be wearing one of them.

Wear the Sneaker/Tennies

Wear a pair of sneakers. You will want them for excursions and by wearing them you will not be using up valuable space in your luggage. Although this is a Patagonian cruise, you will not be doing serious hiking unless you are on a true adventure cruise, so there is no need to pack them.

Pack a Versatile Slide-on Sandal

For the warmer weather, on deck, and even dinner, I recommend a slide-on sandal with a low or wedge heel . I find them to be versatile and comfortable. You can wear them with dresses, shorts, pants, and swimwear. Also, if you have the right brand, you can wear them for sightseeing. I like Aerosoles or LifeStride.

Dress Shoes for Evenings

As for dressier shoes, ballet flats are probably more practical but I like to have a pair of shoes with heels. While Ballet flats can be dressed up, I like heels for formal nights. They make me feel more put together.

What to Pack in Your Cruise Carry-on Bag

If you are coming from the Northern Hemisphere you have probably endured a long flight and will want to have the ability to clean up a bit when you get on board. After boarding the ship, it could be several hours before your luggage arrives at your cabin. Typically, it gets to your cabin by 8 P.M. But you will want to pack a small bag that will go to your stateroom with you when you arrive.

For a carry-on, I suggest a small backpack. It is something that you can use throughout your trip. It can be used to tote camera equipment on excursions. And, it’s also handy for carrying the layers of clothing you strip off as the day wears on and the temperatures rise.

Your carry-on luggage list should be short. Here are a few necessities you will want in your carry-on.

• Toothbrush and paste
• The one cosmetic item you can’t live without
• Swim Cover-up
• One casual outfit
• Any valuables (jewelry, camera, laptop, etc)
• Important medication

You don’t need a lot in your bag but you will want some basic toiletries such as deodorant as well as a toothbrush and paste to freshen up. Don’t bother with soaps and shampoos. You will have those in your stateroom.

As women, we usually have some form of cosmetics we don’t go out without. For me that is mascara. If you have one of those items, toss it in your bag. It won’t take up much space. If you absolutely must have some color try something compact like e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi Stick, For Eyes, Lips & Cheeks .

Give yourself a little refresh after what is sure to be a long travel day.

It should be hot when you arrive and you may want to have your swimsuit and a cover-up. Dinner that first night will be casual. Many people opt for the buffet, therefore there is no need for any special attire. Even if you choose the main dining room you are not expected to dress up. Maybe pack a clean shirt and shorts or a skirt.

If you have brought any valuables such as laptops, cameras, or jewelry you want to be sure to carry them onto the ship.

Also, be sure to have any medication you may need. On rare occasions, luggage gets misplaced and doesn’t find its way to your stateroom until the following day. I’ve personally never had this experience but I’ve heard of it happening.

What Not to Pack for a South American Cruise

Leave the valuable jewelry at home.

Avoid packing a lot of valuable jewelry. It’s just something to worry about losing or having stolen. Also, if you bring jewelry of value, you may want to consider only wearing it on the ship. I was warned about the security of the gold necklace I had around my neck during a walking tour in Valparaiso Chile.

Skip the Hiking Boots

Don’t pack your hiking boots. You won’t need them unless you are doing pre- or post-trip activities where they are necessary. The excursions in port are not significant enough to warrant them. Sneakers will be just fine. If you do have activities planned that will require them, I recommend wearing them so they do not take up valuable real estate in your luggage.

Pass on the Gear

Also, there is no need to pack gear for excursions such as waterproof clothing for kayaking or spikes for walking on glaciers. Necessary, activity-specific gear will be provided by your tour operator.

Remember: Ships Have Laundry Service

A final note about packing for your South American cruise adventure: don’t forget you have laundry service available to you on the ship. However, you may want to avoid it as much as possible as it can get costly.  However, there are usually one or two days when the cruise line offers a special deal for laundry service. Typically, it is a flat rate for as much as you can stuff in a bag. This is when you will want to use it.

And, although a dry cleaning service is available to you as well, try to pack clothes that will not require pressing. Knits are typically the best for this.

I am unable to download the South American cruise packing list after signing up for newsletter.

I have tried twice to get the printable packing list but still do not have it. Is it listed it in another place? It seems like a S. American cruise requires warm and cold clothes. We will be sailing in late December and early January…

Cape Horn Expedition Cruise. The Straits of Magellan, Beagle Channel and Cape Horn are important and highly significant geographic and historical landmarks in the southern tip of the South American continent. Buenos Aires

This fabulous city is renowned for its sophistication, although travelers expecting a more 'South American' experience are sometimes disappointed with its European feel. Argentina is one Latin American country where Europeans and North Americans can feel at ease and travel relatively inconspicuously. An interest in soccer and some nimble foot skills may be all you need to feel like a local.

Home to almost 50% of the nation's population, Montevideo is a modern metropolis with a historical old town dating back to colonial times. Surrounding the whole city lies an uninterrupted stretch of white sandy beach. Highlights include Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) with its 18th century buildings, the vibrant Mercado del Puerto, and the bustling commercial activity of Avenida 18 de Julio and its cultural offerings (theatres, museums and art galleries)

Puerto Madryn

Located on the eastern coast of the Province of Chubut, Puerto Madryn overlooks the blue waters of the Golfo Nuevo, where wind is music and silence accompanies the language of birds. At present, the population is approximately of 50.000 inhabitants. The urban area is surrounded by hills and dunes. Its long coast boulevard, its wide paved streets, and its beautiful avenue turn Puerto Madryn into a modern progressive city. During the day, the visitor will feel obliged to walk along the coast avenue to observe the facilities of the port and the serene waters of the gulf. The transparency of the calm deep waters and its varied fauna make it an ideal place for subaquatic sports fans, among them lovers of scuba diving. Because of that Puerto Madryn is considered the Argentine capital of subaquatic activities.

Stanley/Falklands

Stanley is a picturesque town of about 1700 people. Brightly colored wriggly-tin roofs contrast strikingly with the grays and browns of the surrounding hills. The town is named after Lord Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies 1841 - 1844. He ordered the main settlement to be removed from Port Louis to the Port Jackson area and Governor Richard Clement Moody completed the move and took up official residence in Stanley on the 15th July 1844. Your first point of call should be the newly completed Jetty Center - situated just off the Public Jetty, this is where you'll get all the information you'll need on what to do, how to get about and where to stay. For anyone interested in history, a visit to Stanley will be a rich and rewarding experience. A maritime history trail around the harbor leads you to famous wrecks. Old stone cottages mingle with wriggly-tin houses - there are the amazing Jubilee Villas - a piece of British Victorian suburbia in the South Atlantic and the Chelsea Pensioners houses in Pioneer row (brought here in the late 1840's). There are also more recent reminders of the conflict in 1982 - Stanley may be small but it is filled with interest. Your visit would not be complete without a visit to the museum in Holdfast Road (so called because it was here on the 14th June 1982 that Maj. Gen. Sir Jeremy Moore ordered his troops to 'hold fast' until he had negotiated the Argentine surrender. The museum is packed with a huge variety of exhibits ranging from an 1896 Symphonium to whalebones. The stated objective of the museum is to present a taste of the many aspects of the Falklands' rich and varied history including Domestic, Maritime, Social, Military and Natural History - it is not to be missed!

Cape Horn is the southernmost point of South America. It is located in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The cape was first rounded on January 26, 1616 by a Dutch expedition of Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire. They named it Kaap Hoorn after the city of Hoorn, Schouten's birthplace. The spanish name of the place is a degeneration of the dutch: Cabo de Hornos. Cape Horn is famous for the weather conditions that made it difficult to round in the days of sailing ships. Even so, the open waters of the Drake Passage south of the Cape meant plenty of sea room for maneuvering, while the narrow Strait of Magellan through the Tierra del Fuego islands could be a slow and tortuous passage. The area of the Cape is in Chile. A family lives at a small station maintained by the government, consisting of a main house, utility building, chapel, and lighthouse. A short distance off there is a large sculpture featuring the silhouette of an albatross. The terrain is entirely treeless, although quite lush due to the frequent precipitation.

Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, on the shores of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mounts. It is the capital of the Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and Southern Atlantic Islands Province, and its superlative location allows you to enjoy sea, mountains and forests at the same time. Besides, it is a great place for shopping: the whole island is a tax free zone, thus you can find lots of imported goods along with regional products.

Punta Arenas

This is Patagonia's largest and most commercially important city. Located on the western side of the Strait of Magellan with a superb port and the only large airport in the area, it is the major hub for boat transport through the strait and research vessels on their way to or from Antarctica. For the visitor, Punta Arenas is better known as the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, 400 kilometers to the northwest. This unique town grew up on wool and international shipping before the Panama Canal opened. In the late 19th century, huge fortunes made by sheep farming left the city with distinguished mansions, some of them now museums and other monuments. Summer cruise ships from Punta Arenas travel to Antarctica, where Chile claims a sector of the icebound continent. You can also begin a scenic ferry cruise through the Chilean fjords from Puerto Natales, sailing north to Puerto Montt, in the southern mainland lake region.

Amalia Glacier

Amalia Glacier is more dramatic than Pio XI, but getting to and from Pio is by far more interesting and beautiful. Seas continue calm, sky partly cloudy but otherwise fair with no rain.

Puerto Montt

This is the capital city of the Lakes Region X, the last city in its longitudinal valley. Puerto Montt was founded in 1853 by Vicente Perez Rosales as part of the policy of settling the area promoted by the government of the time. A year before, the first German immigrants to the country had arrived in the area, and the city, along with Valdivia and Osorno, retains much of their influence. The bay of Puerto Montt extends over the northern part of the Seno de Reloncavi, with a view of the distant Corcovado and Michinmahuida volcanoes. The central business and service section of the city lies around Manuel Irrazabal Square, with a nice view of the sea, and the Cathedral located north of the square. From the square westwards is the John Paul II Museum, which commemorates the visit of His Holiness the Pope in 1987, as well as housing articles from the culture of the indigenous peoples and the German settlers. Further on rise the harbor works and the Handicrafts Fair, where a variety of characteristic articles produced by local artists can be seen and purchased. At the end of the street is the Caleta Angelmo, famous for its fair and traditional restaurants, especially those where every sort of fish and seafood, in particular the local "curanto," can be sampled. Along the same coast road eastwards of the city is Pelluco Beach, with its beautiful residences, very good restaurants, discotheques, and pubs.

San Antonio/Chile

San Antonio Port is the most important port of Chile and is located in the central zone of the country, it is the nearest port to the metropolis , Santiago. Its influence area is formed by central Chile and Mendoza province of Argentina. San Antonio Port has the four Gantry cranes existing in the South American Pacific Coast. Besides, it has modern equipment for the transference of cargo and portage: two Gottwald cranes , two Demag cranes, one Level Luffing crane especialized in solid bulk transference, 14 reach stacker cranes and 12 units specialized in the portage of containers. A great advantage of San Antonio Port is its strategic location and excellent access ways: its linked with the capital of the country (only 100 km away), by the Sol Highway, a high speed and double tracks highway. Through De La Fruta Road is linked with the central and south zone of the country . Likewise, it has roads that link San Antonio Port with the surrounding cities of the province of Mendoza Argentina (458 km away). All these factors make that San Antonio Port be the N°1 port of the country: is the N°1 in cargo throughput (9.3 million tons the year 2002), N°1 in liner services callings and farming bulks transference, and also is the leader in transshipment and coastal navigation.

5 Day - Patagonian Explorer USH-PUQ

Embarkation

PM : Check in at the Australis travel center at 409 San Martín Ave. in downtown Ushuaia between 10:00 and 17:00 on the day of your cruise departure. Board at 18:00.

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night we traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentine into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as we turn into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Nassau Bay & Cape Horn National Park

AM : By early morning, the ship is cruising across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn. Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition -- and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland -- Cape Horn is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic, and was often referred to as the "End of the Earth." The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument.

PM : Sailing back across Nassau Bay, we anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on the HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station -- which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area -- passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooden mountain behind the bay. On all of these you will be strolling through an enchanted Magellan forest of lengas, coigües, canelos, ferns, and other endemic fauna to reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum – letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers – an ancient mariner tradition revived by Australis.

Pia Glacier & Porter Glacier

AM : In the morning we will navigate the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel to enter and disembark in Pia Fjord. We will take a short hike to a lookout from where we can see Pia Glacier extending from the top of the mountain range all the way down to the sea.

PM : In the afternoon and aboard our Zodiac boats, we will sail between high rocky walls until we reach Porter Glacier. We will stop to observe its colors, listen to its sounds and if we are lucky, even witness some calving. We will stay here for a moment to discuss this incredible ice mass and take some photographs before returning on board.

Agostini Sound, Águila Glacier & Cóndor Glacier

AM : Early in the morning, we will sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound. From there it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range -- some of them reaching the water. This morning, we will disembark and go for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier. We will reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views.

PM : In the afternoon, we will approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac -- and hopefully see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.

Disembarkation

AM : After an overnight cruise that takes us back into the Strait of Magellan, we anchor off Magdalena Island, which lies about halfway between Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. At the break of dawn, weather permitting, we go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. Many other bird species are also found on the island. In September and April -- when the penguins dwell elsewhere -- this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to observe South American sea lions. After a short sail south along the strait, disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for around 11:30 AM.

5 Day - Fjords of Tierra del Fuego PUQ-USH

PM : Check in at 1398 Costanera del Estrecho Ave. (Arturo Prat Port) between 13:00 and 17:00. Board at 18:00.

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the remotest corners of planet Earth. During the night we cross the Strait of Magellan and enter the labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonian. The twinkling lights of Punta Arenas gradually fade into the distance as we enter the Whiteside Canal between Darwin Island and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Ainsworth Bay & Tuckers Islets

AM : By dawn the ship is sailing up Admiralty Sound (Seno Almirantazgo), a spectacular offshoot of the Strait of Magellan that stretches nearly halfway across Tierra del Fuego. The snowcapped peaks of Karukinka Natural Park stretch along the north side of the sound, while the south shore is defined by the deep fjords and broad bays of Alberto de Agostini National Park. We go ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals which can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Two guided excursions are available: one is along the edge of a stream, peat bog and beaver habitat to a waterfall-and-moss-covered rock face tucked deep inside a pristine sub-polar forest; the other is a more strenuous hike along the crest of a glacial moraine. Both afford views of Marinelli Glacier and the Darwin Mountains. Leaving Ainsworth Bay behind, we sail west along the sound to the Tucker Islets.

PM : After lunch, we board the Zodiacs again for a close-up view of the Magellan penguins that inhabit the tiny islands. More than 4,000 penguins use Tucker as a place to nest, give birth and nurture their chicks. Many other bird species also frequent the area including king cormorants, oystercatchers, Chilean skuas, kelp geese, dolphin gulls, eagles and even the occasional Andean condor. In September and April -- when the penguins live elsewhere -- this excursion is replaced by a short walk to a glacier at nearby stunning Brookes Bay.

Pia Glacier & Glacier Alley

AM : Overnight we sail around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, Stella Australis tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a shore excursion to Pia Glacier. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier. No one knows for certain how the hulking mass of snow and ice got its feminine moniker, but one theory says it was named for Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), daughter of the Italian king.

PM : Back onboard the ship, we continue east along the Beagle Channel through an area called Glacier Alley. Living up to its name, the passage features a number of impressive tidewater glaciers flowing down from the Darwin Mountains and Darwin Ice Sheet on the north shore. Most of them named after European countries -- Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

Wulaia Bay & Cape Horn

AM: The following morning we sail into Argentine waters and dock in Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city. Disembarkation is scheduled at 8:00. You have almost a full day to explore Ushuaia which was founded in 1884 and was one of the original points of contact between the indigenous Yámana and European cultures. The city's name derives from the Yámana word for ‘penetrating bay.’ With around 65,000 inhabitants, Ushuaia is the second largest city in Tierra del Fuego (after Rio Grande) and is surrounded by the Southernmost Andes peaks. Among its highlights is the Prison at the End of the World, a former penitentiary that is now a maritime museum that features an Antarctic collection and memorial to those once incarcerated there. The city is also good for shopping (especially locally made chocolate) or hanging out in its many cafes.

PM: Passengers are required to be back onboard Ventus Australis at 17:30. After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew to new passengers joining the cruise, the ship departs for more adventures in Tierra del Fuego. During the night we traverse the Beagle Channel, cross back into Chilean territorial waters, and turn into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Spot Penguins

Another animal you can’t miss seeing during a cruise around Cape Horn is the Magellanic penguin. Named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, these penguins are some of the largest of their kind and typically have two black stripes running down their stomachs. Over one million Magellanic penguins live in Patagonia, making it more than likely that you’ll see some of these flightless birds during your journey.

Cape Horn is named after the city of Hoorn, the birthplace of explorer Willem Corneliszoon Schouten, who was the first man to sail through Cape Horn in 1616. During the ensuing centuries, the passageway became a popular shipping route, since it was the only way ships were able to travel from Europe to the Far East and back, until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. Cape Horn was once considered one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world, and it is believed that over 10,000 seafarers lost their lives attempting to cross it. The Cape Horn Monument shaped like an albatross on Isla Hornos is dedicated to those who lost their lives off the coast of Cape Horn.
