Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, and if you've ever lounged on one of the island's gorgeous beaches with a fruit-filled rum punch in hand, it's easy to understand why. It helps that Jamaica is extremely accessible. You can fly there (direct from New York City in four hours, at that), but many prefer the experience of island hopping via a Caribbean cruise.

The major cruise ports of Jamaica are Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and Kingston. On the northeastern coast, there's also Port Antonio, which isn't suitable for most large ships but attracts boutique cruise lines and private yachts.

Whether you're interested in discovering pirate history, hiking through the rain forest to see waterfalls, or searching for the best jerk chicken on the island, you're bound to find a cruise itinerary that suits you. Here are some of the best Jamaica-inclusive Caribbean cruises .

Viking Ocean Cruises, Panama Canal and Central America; 15 Days

A round trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this cruise stops in seven countries. The ship sails the Caribbean for two days before making its first stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where cruise-goers can plan to hike the rain forest, visit Dunn's River Falls, or ride a bamboo raft down the Great River, among other excursions. The cruise offers activities for foodies, thrill seekers, history buffs, and beach bums.

After departing Montego Bay, the ship sails the Caribbean and Panama Canal for two days before making its next stop at Colón, Panama, for an optional visit to Indigenous villages or a walk around the colorful city. The following stops — Puerto Limón, Costa Rica ; Roatán, off the coast of Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel , Mexico — showcase the Caribbean's lushest landscapes, ancient Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, and lively towns.

Between ports, a historian teaches about pirates and treasure hunters, pre-Columbian civilizations, and the Age of Discovery aboard the 930-guest Viking Mars . When you aren't attending a lecture, you can indulge in a treatment at the Nordic spa, catch a live performance in the theater, order a martini at the 1940s-inspired bar, or partake in Waffle Hour in the Explorers' Lounge.

Carnival Cruise Line, Western Caribbean; 5 Days

This cruise aboard the Carnival Sunrise departs from Miami for a day at sea before arriving in Grand Cayman. On the island, you can visit a rum cake factory or go snorkeling. After leaving the Cayman Islands , the ship moves on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where excursions include swimming with dolphins, river tubing, zip lining, and horseback riding along the shore. The ship then spends another day at sea before arriving back in Miami.

Onboard dining options include a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, Guy's (as in Guy Fieri's) Burger Joint, a barbecue spot, a cantina, and a sushi joint. Adults can find a quiet spot in the 21-and-up Serenity Retreat, or they can get together in a pub, lounge, or piano bar.

For kids, Seuss at Sea provides a character parade, interactive story time, themed breakfasts, and crafting sessions. Meanwhile, Camp Ocean offers supervised activities like games, songs, dancing, movies, video games, and kids-only meals.

Oceania Cruises, Classic Panama Canal; 11 Days

Travel from Panama City to Miami on Oceania Cruises' Sirena , stopping along the South American coast along the way. The first stop after a day of sailing through the Panama Canal is Cartagena, Colombia , where cruise-goers can hop off the ship to see mansions and a historic fort. The following day is dedicated to Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city.

The ship then visits Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curacao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire, before turning its bow to the north, toward Florida. After a day of sailing the Caribbean, Sirena drops anchor at Port Antonio, Jamaica, the gateway to Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. Guests get a chance to hike, swim, and explore the town square for a day before embarking on another long sail — this time on the Atlantic. A day trip in Nassau, Bahamas , is the perfect penultimate stop before you reach your final destination, Miami.

During days at sea, Sirena keeps up to 648 guests entertained with a pool, theater, casino, and spa, as well as a wide variety of restaurants and an afternoon tea tradition.

Royal Caribbean International, Western Caribbean and Perfect Day; 6 Nights

This cruise leaves Orlando and, after a day at sea, stops in Labadee, Haiti, where activities range from riding a toboggan-style roller coaster to zip lining over the ocean. From there, the ship travels to Falmouth, Jamaica, located between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, for options like horseback riding, river tubing, hiking to a waterfall, and high tea at the historical Good Hope Estate.

After it departs Jamaica, the ship again spends the day at sea. Between ports, travelers can enjoy the spa, fitness center, live performances, kids' activities, and a variety of restaurants aboard the Mariner of the Seas . Following the cruising day is a stop at Royal Caribbean's private CocoCay in the Bahamas. Fill your "Perfect Day" chasing adventure at Thrill Waterpark, where you can ride down North America's tallest waterslide, or relaxing in an overwater cabana at Coco Beach Club. The cay is also home to Chill Island, a beach "neighborhood" where you'll find quiet relaxation, cabana rentals, and restaurants. The next morning, the ship arrives back in Orlando.

Disney Cruise Line, Western Caribbean Cruise; 7 Nights

Consider taking a tour of the Kennedy Space Center before boarding the Disney Fantasy in Cape Canaveral. The first full day of this cruise is spent at sea, but pools, a spa, kids' clubs, restaurants, games, and entertainment provide much to do on the way to Cozumel. Upon arrival in Mexico, guests get the chance to snorkel or dive among coral reefs, shop for handmade souvenirs, and relax on the beach.

The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where you can explore botanic gardens, swim at Seven Mile Beach, or visit the town's shops and restaurants. In Falmouth, Jamaica, the next day, optional activities include a zip-line adventure, waterfall hike, catamaran cruise, horseback ride, or dolphin encounter. The next day at sea is a time to enjoy the ship's amenities while cruising to Disney Castaway Cay.

On this private island reserved for Disney Cruise Line guests, there is a water play area, white-sand beach, walking trails, snorkeling lagoon, boat rentals, teen hideout, and adults-only Serenity Bay. After departing Castaway Cay, the ship cruises overnight to arrive back at Port Canaveral the following day.

Celebrity Cruises, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Mexico; 6 Nights

Departing from Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Reflection spends the first day at sea, giving guests the opportunity to relax in the spa, pool, and solarium. Cozumel is the first stop; the island's coral reef is ideal for snorkeling and diving, while deep-sea fishing is also an option. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can ferry to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, shop for local-made souvenirs, or dine on fresh seafood and Mexican specialties.

The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where guests can shop, go on a catamaran cruise, snorkel, or sample the island's cuisine, including conch. From there, the ship heads to Falmouth, Jamaica. Aside from touring the historic town, there's a wide range of activities: take a trip to the Green Grotto Caves and Dunn's River Falls, ride a horse along the beach, swim with dolphins, or go tubing or zip lining. The next day is spent at sea, with time to enjoy the ship's restaurants, casino, cocktail lounges, and entertainment, before arriving back at Fort Lauderdale the following morning.

MSC Cruises, Western Caribbean; 14 Nights

MSC Divina 's 14-night Western Caribbean itinerary varies slightly from sailing to sailing, but one sample schedule goes as follows: After departing from Miami, the first stop is Nassau, Bahamas, where guests might like to kick off their two-week vacation with a VIP cabana experience on Blue Lagoon Island. The following day, Divina sails to the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a private destination with beachside spa treatments, snorkeling and diving opportunities, and an outdoor food court. The ship then returns to Miami for a day before continuing to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

In Ocho Rios, you can swim in the sparkling Iris Blue Hole or climb to the top of Konoko Falls. Another day at sea follows, during which guests can enjoy this modern, elegant ship with a casino, a spa, kids' and teens' clubs, restaurants, and bars. The next stop is Cartagena, a UNESCO World Heritage site with cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings, followed by Colón, Panama. As you weigh your options in paradise, we’re sure you’ll be drawn to two island nations that have a special hold on visitors’ imaginations: the Bahamas and Jamaica . Yet since we’re equally drawn to the two countries’ stunning beaches, perfect weather and lively nightlife, recommending one over the other is above our pay grade.

Enter a pair of passionately partisan writers, here to make the case for why each of their picks makes the better choice. Seconds out, it's Jamaica vs the Bahamas.

It really is better in the Bahamas – here’s why

Born-and-bred Miami native Jackie Gutierrez-Jones has traveled extensively in the nearby Bahamas, and once lived there part-time for several years.

Growing up in Miami , the Caribbean was my backyard. Since road trips to other states required hours and hours of driving (not to mention extraordinary amounts of patience), there was no reason not to catch a quick ferry or flight over twinkling turquoise ocean waters to experience an island paradise in as little as 45 minutes. I’ll take “Island Hopping” for a budget $200.

Each of those islands became a tropical playground for me, where the sun – ever closer to the equator – would bake the impossibly clear salt water onto my skin and into my hair. This was a tingling, crunchy, warmth that I longed to bottle up and take with me everywhere. And no islands quite captivated me like the Bahamas. Indeed, no other destination. When my husband’s career path brought me to the island as an adult for six months out of the year, I found it heart-wrenching every time I had to leave.

I hear you – yes, you in the back, sipping a Red Stripe. “But, but, but… Jamaica!” And I can’t knock those mountain views, waterfall hikes and languid afternoons nursing a hangover with a pile of Jamaican patties. There’s also a lit nightlife scene, set to homegrown reggae sounds and dancehall. I’ll give you that.

And while it’s great Jamaica boasts 49 different islands, can we talk about the Bahamas’ more than 3000 islands, cays and inlets, some 30 of them inhabited ? You can spend a week hopping from island to island, taking in some of the most crystalline waters you’ve ever seen in your life (oh, hi, Exumas ), and barely scratch the surface.

All that island hopping works up an appetite . Luckily, the Bahamas boasts a roster of celebrity chefs that would make Michelin blush: Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Marcus Samuelsson, Daniel Boulud, Nobu Matsuhisa, Jose Andres and other culinary stars want to feed you – and well. If you’re not the fancy type, follow your nose to the conch shacks in Bimini or the Fish Fry in Nassau – and try to convince me that the fried fish and conch salad there doesn’t stand far above any other island’s offerings. And don’t forget to chase it all down with a bottle of our local beer, Kalik (pronounced “klick”).

Do any of Jamaica’s islands boast a 154-acre resort devoted to the lost city of Atlantis ? One where you can swim with sharks, play a little blackjack and throw yourself down a 200ft body slide in the course of one afternoon? I think not. If diving and snorkeling tickle your fancy, the waters surrounding Bahamian islands edge out anything you’ll find in Jamaica. The sea is clearer, and the stunning reefs attract some of the brightest, most visually stunning marine life in the entire Caribbean.

Think of planning your trip around Junkanoo (December 26 and January 1). It’s like Brazil’s Carnival or New Orleans’ Mardi Gras – only with the colors turned up to 11 (on a scale of 10). Two more words: sky juice. If you know, you know. And I’ve already said too much.

It’s Jamaica or nowhere

A born Jamaican, Heidi Hanna is a passionate adventurer on her home island, often off exploring with her husband and two children. Though she has lived in other countries, Jamaica will always be home to her.

Close your eyes, and imagine that dream island vacation. You might conjure up several destinations – but nowhere else is “no weh nuh betta than yard.” As a Jamaican who has traveled all over the world and explored the nooks and crannies of her home country, I couldn’t agree with this beloved local saying more.

The Bahamas has beautiful beaches, sure – but if your list of island vacation must-haves includes more than just stunning sand and surf, then I’m afraid the Bahamas is already edged out. Once you get a taste of the irie Jamaican lifestyle, you will keep coming back for more.

If you’re a consummate beach bum, you’re in luck. Visit the famous Seven Mile Beach in Negril for amazing sunsets, Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay for crystal-clear water and powdery white sand, and Frenchman’s Cove in Portland, a jungle paradise where the ocean meets the river.

But why not travel deeper into the interior of the country? Go hiking and camping in the lush Blue Mountains , where you can escape the hot Caribbean temperatures and take in amazing views. Spend a few hours floating down the Rio Grande , relaxing on your bamboo raft as you dip your feet into the cool river water and sip an ice-cold Red Stripe. There are also enough majestic waterfalls to keep you exploring the island for years. (Hey you, over there in the Bahamas: how’s beach day going…again?)

Feel your body swaying? That’s the sweet sound of reggae music – and if nature is the heart of our country, music is the soul. It’s a big Jamaican export, yes – but it was born here, and sounds better here. Picture yourself sitting on a bar stool with a rum punch in hand, watching the sun go down and jammin’ to some sweet Bob Marley vibes. No nightclubs needed. I bet your friends in the Bahamas are nursing a Kalik and wishing they were singing along to One Love in Jamaica right now.

If you like to party, come down for Sumfest , the largest music festival in the Caribbean, to dance the night away with Grammy-winning artists like Sean Paul, Koffee, Shaggy, Buju Banton and others. Expect very late nights – maybe with just enough time to enjoy a morning cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee before you lie out on the morning sun. (Guess who’s going to the beach again today?)

The Bahamas might entice you with Michelin-starred restaurants and tasty conch – but Jamaica will win over your heart (or at least your stomach) with its celebrated street food . (Does it even count as a trip to Jamaica if you don’t eat something jerked?) Simple eateries are where you get to eat the best local food and interact with real Jamaicans over pan chicken, curried goat, peppered shrimp, ackee and saltfish (our national dish), roast breadfruit, pepper-pot soup, escovitch fish…you get the idea.

Jamaica just feels right, doesn’t it? You know you’ve made the right choice. Now, open your eyes…

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

• The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

• Passport card
• State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
• Government-issued birth certificate
• Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
• American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

• Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
• Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

• Voter registration cards
• Social Security cards
• Baptismal papers
• Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.
