Experience Mexico protected

Mexico’s culture is a draw for UK, European and American tourists alike. With its mixture of indigenous and Hispanic history, its incredible coastlines and its striking monuments, Mexico gives visitors a land of intrigue, mystery and adventure. So whether you’re going to swim its phosphorescent lagoons or take in the wrestling in Mexico City, make sure you take good travel insurance with you.

Protect what matters when you go with good travel insurance

Healthcare for brits in mexico.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCD) travel advice for Mexico warns that medical facilities may not immediately agree to treat you under the terms of your medical travel insurance , so it’s advisable to have accessible funds to pay for any medical care you might need. If you are in this situation, you may still be able to make a claim on your travel insurance for a refund of costs incurred, so make sure you maintain all documents you receive as part of your treatment and request an itemised list of payments.

Zika virus has been reported in Mexico, as well as other dangerous mosquito-borne infections and viruses. Taking care to avoid being bitten is important, and there are a few simple steps you can follow to minimise the risk of insect bites .

Food and drink can pose a risk to your health as well. While most food is considered safe, do not eat anything that has not been properly cooked, has been left out for any length of time or is raw. Only drink boiled or bottled water and use this when brushing your teeth as well. Avoid taking ice in your drinks. If you haven’t bought bottled water from a supermarket, check that the seal isn’t broken and that it appears completely clear and free of particles.

Some of Mexico is at a high altitude, including Mexico City. This can make you feel a bit unwell if you’re unused to it, and Travel Health Pro have a guide for altitude sickness and what to do if the altitude affects you.

Travel risks in Mexico

Most journeys that British tourists make to Mexico are trouble-free but there are places where ongoing situations can be dangerous for visitors. Certain areas in the North of the country and at the border with the US have seen significant violence due to the trade in illegal drugs, and such areas could be unsafe for British visitors.

Mexico is also prone to a number of natural disasters that it’s worth preparing for. Hurricanes and earthquakes are both possible. Hurricanes normally occur between June and November and, while they mainly affect coastal areas, they can also travel large distances inland. Hurricanes may also contribute to other, more localised disasters like landslides and flooding.

Earthquakes also occasionally occur, and tremors are common. Earthquakes can cause fires and buildings collapse, so make sure you know whether the area you’re visiting is prone to earthquakes and what to do if one happens. There are apps that can warn you about oncoming shakes.

Things to bear in mind

Tourist destinations in Mexico receive extra protection and security from the state and generally considered safe, however danger can’t be entirely ruled out and it’s important to remain vigilant against the sort of crime that you would in anywhere new.

Always keep your eye on your drinks and don’t accept drinks bought for you by strangers. Avoid travelling alone, especially at night. Make sure that belongings are securely stored, for instance in room safes, and  make sure items are protected when you go to the beach . We have a guide on how to avoid scams while on holiday  which can help, especially if you’re in crowded areas.

It’s recommended not to leave the tourist areas you are visiting, and if you travel around, to do so as part of an organised group. Try not to wear visible jewellery or carry expensive-looking equipment, and avoid using public cashpoints if possible.

Entry requirements

You don't need a visa to visit Mexico as a tourist, but you may for other types of visit. You'll be asked to fill in an immigration form when you arrive, and it's vital to keep hold of this as you will be asked to provide it when you leave. Check the entry requirements for Mexico according to the FCDO .

You can get a Forma Migratoria Múltiple - like a visa but not quite the same thing - online but your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Mexico.

Do I need travel insurance for Mexico?

It isn’t compulsory to have travel insurance for a visit to Mexico, but it is advisable and can give you reassurance against the unexpected when you go.

For one thing, it will cover the costs of any emergency medical treatment if you fall ill or are injured while you’re away, as well as repatriation if you need to be flown home. It's important for instance, to make sure you have cover for Covid-19 related disruptions while you're on holiday.

Choose a quality travel insurance policy with the right level of cover and it will also protect you against travel delays and disruption, having to cancel or cut short your trip for reasons out of your control, or belongings that are lost, damaged or stolen – like your passport or luggage.

Am I covered for activities in Mexico?

Many of Mexico’s tourist destinations offer loads of outdoor and adventure sports. Before you take part in the activities on offer, make sure you’re covered for it. Things that you might not consider dangerous may be considered risky by insurers. It’s therefore important to read your policy thoroughly before booking yourself into something.

If you find something you absolutely have to get involved in and you’re not covered, speak to your insurer. Some provide add-ons for adventure sports where the cover goes further, but you need to make sure to purchase any add-ons prior to going away. If you take your policy document with you, you can check your cover if you feel like being spontaneous.

Remember that healthcare in Mexico isn’t free, and medical cover would be necessary if you were to get hurt or fall ill. Check whether your insurer can pay your medical expenses for you or whether you will need to pay upfront and be reimbursed at a later date.

Is Mexico in Caribbean for travel insurance?

The southeast coast of Mexico may be brushed by the clear blue waters of the Caribbean Sea but whether it’s classed as part of the Caribbean for travel insurance purposes depends on the provider.

Some insurers group Mexico, the USA, Canada and other destinations in and around the Americas together in a single ‘worldwide’ group for the purposes of providing cover. At Post Office, for instance, Mexico is classed as part of this worldwide group.

Always check the latest travel advice

Before you travel, check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice  for your destination, as travelling against this advice may invalidate your travel insurance.

Travel Insurance for Mexico

travel insurance mexico uk

Mexico is well-known for allowing tourists to explore the tropical beaches of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and the enchanting Mayan Port City Ruins along with many more natural and man-made wonders. In Mexico, you can expect to visit a country teeming with culture in the forms of big cities, smaller towns, and more secluded areas, suitable for almost any tourist looking for a getaway.

For many people who visit Mexico, the adventure starts when they walk around the vibrant city or go on a day trip to one of the smaller towns, to truly be at one with the culture. The streets are home to beautiful murals to enjoy, and if you want to explore another side of Mexico, the country has some beautiful mountains that are open for hiking as well.

A trip to Mexico can be whatever you make it, with warm weather for most of the year and friendly locals to welcome you to the country, what more could you ask for? One of the most talked about aspects of Mexico is their cuisine, the vibrant street food markets offer the favourite classic dishes you’d expect, such as tacos and enchiladas, that are bursting with all the right flavours.

Mexico is a paradise to those that visit, this is highlighted by the beautiful and unusual marine life that lives on this country’s shorelines. You may be lucky enough to see grey whales along the Baja coast if the conditions are right. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous with your tourist activities, you can even get up close and personal with the marine life and cage-dive into the ocean.

Mexico’s official language is Spanish. But, on your travels you will find that most of the locals speak English. However, in some of the smaller towns and cities, you may find that they don’t speak English well or at all, so try to learn some basic Spanish if you are planning on travelling to more rural areas of Mexico. Before you travel, be sure to change your currency to Mexican peso.

No matter what plans you have whilst visiting Mexico, it is important to take out travel insurance for Mexico to protect yourself against many unforeseen eventualities.

Below is some more information about our products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

While travel insurance isn’t a legal requirement, you should still view it as an essential part of your trip. Most visits to Mexico are trouble-free, however, travel insurance can help to protect you when the unexpected happens.

Currently in Mexico, there are some difficulties with crossing land-borders due to the large number of migrants moving throughout the country and beyond. It is advised to regularly check with local authorities or tour operators before attempting to cross borders into or out of Mexico.

Furthermore, there have been some issues in Mexico that are crime and security related. Whilst travelling around Mexico, be sure to remain vigilant and safe against possible criminal activities, such as robbery, assault, or vehicle hijacking. Please follow the advice of local authorities when you are abroad.

UK health authorities have also classified Mexico as having a potential risk transmitting the Zika virus. To learn more, please visit the National Travel Health Network and Centre Website.

The types of weather can include the hurricane season (June-November), tropical storms, and more, which can easily affect travel plans if they occur.

Do I Need Travel Insurance For Mexico?

There is no requirement to have travel insurance for Mexico but there are plenty of good reasons you should. Chief among them is if you are injured or taken ill in Mexico then the cost of medical treatment could be significant.

If you have to be returned home – or repatriated – then it is a long way to travel, especially if you are bed-bound and in need of medical equipment.

Then there are other smaller benefits of travel insurance like help if you miss your flight or it is delayed.

Travel Insurance For Mexico

Not all Mexico travel insurance policies are created equal. In fact, there are plenty that are designed to sell you a cheap product that doesn’t actually cover that much.

When looking for Mexico travel insurance look out for these important features:

  • Delay and missed departure cover – in case events out of your control (such as extreme weather) cause you to miss your plane.
  • Travel abandonment cover
  • Cover for lost and stolen baggage.
  • Cover for the loss or theft of your passport.
  • Personal liability cover.
  • Cover for medical expenses
  • Cover for your repatriation to the UK if needed
  • Cover for cancelling or curtailing your holiday in an emergency.

Is Mexico covered in worldwide insurance?

Yes. Most travel insurance policies offer European cover, Worldwide excluding the USA, and including the USA. Of course some insurers will vary so you should make sure you are getting the right travel insurance for Mexico when you apply.

The reason for this difference is the relative cost of medical bills wherever you travel.

European medical systems tend to be very similar. However, the USA stands out for its particularly expensive medical care. For that reason insurers have to charge more because the costs of claims in the US tends to be higher than most other places.

While this may vary between insurers, Mexico is typically regarded as being part of the USA for travel insurance purposes.

With Emerald Life travel insurance, our Mexico travel insurance does require you to select worldwide including the USA.

Mexico Travel Insurance

Mexico is an exciting and vibrant country, full of interest for the overseas traveller. Whether it’s the beautiful sandy beaches and warm crystal clear waters, the fascinating Mayan ruins or the exciting cities that are of interest, Mexico offers something for everyone. There are, however, a couple of possible eventualities that must be covered with travel insurance when visiting this destination.

Medical Travel Insurance

Firstly it is essential to ensure adequate medical travel insurance cover. Mexico has no reciprocal agreements with other countries when it comes to health care services and without the proper cover, any illness or injury could become very expensive. If you are already covered by a private health care plan, some of these do offer cover for overseas travel, although this is can be somewhat limited.

Cover for Theft

Mexico is relatively safe but minor thefts are likely to happen, so besides keeping that laptop, camera or mobile device safely secured at all times, ensure you are covered in case of loss or theft. Also ensure that you have cover for your luggage and other personal items, in case of loss, either in transit or at your lodgings. However, it is worth checking your household insurance policy as you may find you are already covered for this.

Ensure that you are adequately covered so as not to lose out on your hard-earned cash while enjoying your holiday in Mexico.

Interesting facts about Mexico

  • The poinsettia, a vivid red-and-green plant favoured by grannies at Christmas, originally comes from Mexico. It’s named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first US minister to Mexico, who first brought it home in 1825 – maybe for his gran.
  • Mexico City was built on top of a big lake. You’d think that wouldn’t make great foundations for a city – and you’d be right. The city’s water is drawn from underground, causing it to sink by 20cm a year – much faster than Venice!
  • Chihuahua, Mexico’s largest state, gives its name to one of the world’s smallest breeds of dog. Pots depicting Chihuahua-like dogs were found in Mexico from 300 BC, when hairless dogs were eaten at feasts.
  • Warm up your vocal chords and brush up your lyrics before attempting to sing the Mexican national anthem! You could be fined if you get it wrong, as singer Guadalupe Madrigal was when she messed up the words before a soccer match in 2004.
  • Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, is still spoken by 1.5 million people in Mexico. Dozens of Nahuatl words are used in everyday English, including tomato, chocolate, avocado, guacamole, cocoa, chilli and shack. Spot the odd one out.
  • In Mexico they were smashing up piñatas – suspended containers full of goodies – at birthdays long before the Spanish turned up. The Aztecs did it to celebrate the birth of the god Huitzilopochtli, with song, dance – and a few dozen sacrifices!
  • Mexicans love to hoist big flags up in town squares. A giant national flag 34.3m x 60m across was run up a 100m flagpole in Piedras Negras on 2 December 2011 – the largest flag ever flown from a pole. It happened to be right next to the US border.

Do I need travel insurance for Mexico?

What are the different types of mexican travel insurance, which credit cards offer travel insurance, where can you purchase more coverage, final thoughts on buying travel insurance for mexico.

Planning a trip to Mexico? The country has a lot to offer to globetrotters: breathtaking beaches, flavorful food, and striking sights. Plus, it’s easy to get to with nonstop flights from many U.S. hubs.

Once you’ve booked your ticket, you might be wondering if you should buy travel insurance for your Mexico trip. Here's a look at whether Mexico travel insurance is required, what credit cards offer trip coverage and where else you can buy a policy if you need additional protections.

If you’re a frequent traveler, something going wrong on your travels isn't a matter of if, but a matter of when. You could experience an overnight delay, your bag might not make it to your destination or your rental car may no longer be where you parked it.

Because traveling is anything but perfect, you might consider purchasing a travel insurance policy for a variety of reasons, including:

To protect the upfront costs in case of a cancellation or a delay.

To protect yourself from a costly bill in case of an emergency medical situation.

Although travel insurance isn’t required for Mexico, many people still choose to purchase it. You’ll want to take a look at the overall trip and expenses while you consider your options .

For example, are you renting a car for a self-drive adventure? You might consider a policy that includes rental accident coverage . Is the cruise you booked out of Cozumel setting sail the day you arrive? You might want to have missed-connection coverage. Will you be traveling to Cancun during hurricane season? Look for a plan that covers inclement weather .

Travel insurance coverage ranges from basic to extended and the limits vary. You will typically find the following types of insurance and coverage in a comprehensive travel insurance plan.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides coverage for death or losing a limb, sight, hearing or speech as a result of an accident.

Baggage delay reimburses the cost of essential items paid for in the first few days of not receiving your checked bag.

Baggage loss reimburses the cost of your suitcase and belongings should a checked bag become lost, stolen or damaged.

Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation insurance provides coverage for transportation to the nearest medical facility or your home country (including the transport of remains).

Rental car collision damage waiver offers insurance against damage or theft of a rental car.

Trip cancellation reimburses prepaid nonrefundable costs if you must cancel a trip for an unforeseen covered reason, such as illness or a natural disaster (note that this doesn’t provide Cancel For Any Reason coverage).

Trip delay covers transportation, meals and lodging should your common carrier be delayed or you can’t return home because of quarantine.

Trip interruption reimburses you for unused, nonrefundable costs if the trip has to be cut short for a covered reason and you must return home.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth it?

Before you decide to buy independent travel insurance for Mexico, check to see if you already have coverage provided as a benefit of one of your travel credit cards . With most cards, the coverage limits are typically lower than on a comprehensive plan, but it’s better than nothing.

The following cards provide coverage against trip delay, baggage delay or loss, travel accidents, and rental car collision damage:

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

The Platinum Card® from American Express .

United℠ Explorer Card .

Terms apply.

If you hold one of the cards above, or perhaps a different credit card, familiarize yourself with the benefits guide. You might be pleasantly surprised to know that several items of a comprehensive travel insurance plan are included as long as you pay for the trip with that credit card.

One of the most valuable perks is collision damage insurance for a rental car. However — and we can’t stress this enough — beware that the rental car collision damage waiver included with the cards above doesn’t cover the liability insurance that car rental companies in Mexico require.

You might be surprised to arrive at the rental car counter after having reserved an inexpensive vehicle only to be hit with an astronomical fee on top of the bill. Before you yell at the agent, know that the charge is legitimate as this coverage is required by law. Either obtain the required coverage before arriving in Mexico or pay for a liability plan from the rental company .

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Although trip insurance that comes with travel rewards credit cards is good to have, you might notice that some of the coverage limits aren’t particularly high. If you feel like you need better travel insurance for Mexico, consider investing in a comprehensive independent policy.

Travel insurance marketplaces, like InsureMyTrip, Squaremouth orTravelGuard can help you find trip coverage, compare quotes and narrow down a plan for your needs and at your price point. Travel insurance providers include AXA Assistance, Battleface, GoReady, IMG , Seven Corners , Trawick International, Nationwide and more.

Depending on the plan, you can get coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, baggage delay or loss, rental car collision damage waiver, emergency medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage. You might even get COVID-19 coverage with some plans, so make sure to read over each plan’s terms carefully.

With travel insurance marketplace tools, you can filter quote results based on what you want the policy to cover, including coronavirus pandemic, quarantine extension or pre-existing conditions .

It’s worth noting that general travel insurance doesn’t cover extreme sports like scuba diving, so if you plan on diving in the cenotes of Yucatan Peninsula or at Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, consider purchasing scuba diving insurance from DiveAssure, Divers Alert Network or World Nomads .

» Learn more: Airline travel insurance versus independent travel insurance

Travel insurance can help put your mind at ease in case something goes wrong on your trip. Although you don’t have to buy travel insurance for Mexico, you might give the idea a second thought as you never know what can happen abroad. Luckily, many credit cards provide some basic coverage, and if you need more protection, you can always purchase a comprehensive plan that fits your needs.

From delicious food to sandy beaches to historic sites, there’s something for every traveler in Mexico. But before you zip up your suitcase, you’ll want to make sure your trip is protected.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at options for Mexico travel insurance, requirements for traveling to Mexico, and offer destination-specific travel tips so you can have a safe and relaxing experience.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Mexico?

Insurance is not a requirement to visit Mexico; however, it is a smart idea to have! Let’s take a closer look at the reasons why you should buy insurance before your trip to Mexico.

Should You Buy Travel Insurance for Mexico?

It’s always a smart decision to buy travel insurance before your trip, especially if you’re traveling to another country like Mexico. It’s impossible to anticipate every potential mishap. The coverage you purchase can protect you — your money, your health, your belongings — when the unexpected happens.

Explain why purchasing travel insurance is recommended, even if the country readers are visiting does not require it for entry.

Mexico Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Seven Corners offers a variety of plans that meet most travelers’ needs. Coverage options can differ depending on the plan you choose, the specific benefits and add-ons you select, and your state or country of residency. Below are some travel insurance benefits found in many of Seven Corners plans to help protect you during your trip to Mexico.

Trip Cancellation

Seven Corners could reimburse you for the prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses you insured if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason. Covered reasons can include triggers such as an illness that prevents you from traveling or inclement weather, like a hurricane, that makes it impossible to get to your destination.

For the flexibility to cancel your trip for any reason, not just those listed in your plan document, consider adding optional Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage .

Trip Interruption

An interruption often means you ended your trip and returned home early, but it can also include needing to start your trip late. If you need to interrupt your trip for a covered reason, you could be reimbursed for unused prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses. This benefit also covers the expense of additional transportation.

For more flexibility to interrupt your trip and still be reimbursed, consider adding optional Interruption for Any Reason (IFAR) coverage . This allows you to interrupt your trip for any reason, not just the covered reasons listed in your plan document. Examples include feeling unsafe at your destination and deciding to return home or move to your next destination early or simply changing your mind about travel so you end your trip early.

This benefit can cover expenses resulting from a delay, whether you’re headed to Mexico or coming home or even if you’re delayed in the middle of your trip. To be reimbursed, the delay must be caused by a covered reason, such as a flight delay lasting the required amount of time.

Lost or Delayed Baggage

Seven Corners will reimburse you to replace necessary personal belongings if your baggage is delayed by your airline or other common carrier on your way to Mexico. Necessary personal items include things like clothing or toiletries so that you can continue on your trip.

If your baggage is lost, delayed, damaged, or stolen during your trip, your travel insurance could pay to replace or repair the insured items

For both lost and delayed baggage, it’s important to remember that some items such as laptops and jewelry may not be covered, and your luggage must be delayed for the length of time stated in the plan before you are eligible for reimbursement.

  • Travel Medical

Travel medical insurance can cover expenses for medical treatment if you get sick or hurt during your trip. This is particularly important for travelers whose domestic health insurance does not provide coverage overseas.

Seven Corners Trip Protection plans provide coverage for Emergency Accident and Sickness as well as Emergency Dental expenses. We also provide a variety of travel medical plans with robust medical coverage for both U.S. and international residents.

Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation

If you get sick or hurt during your trip to Mexico and adequate care is not available, Seven Corners will arrange an emergency medical evacuation to a medical facility that can provide treatment if it is deemed medically necessary. We will also arrange your return home so you can continue recovering.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

This Seven Corners benefit provides coverage for loss of life or limb resulting from an injury caused by an accident during your trip to Mexico.

In some Mexican states, there are high amounts of crime and kidnapping. This Mexico Travel Advisory can tell you if the area you’re considering visiting has an especially high amount of crime.

It’s important to be aware of common scams that target tourists in Mexico so you can avoid them. Card-skimming is prevalent throughout Mexico, so try to pay with cash when possible. When you do withdraw cash, use well-lit ATMs in populated areas. Be careful when getting in a taxi, as there are a growing number of fake taxi drivers. If possible, ask your hotel to book you an authorized taxi. When getting in the car, ensure the driver is licensed and that their face matches the photo on the license.

What is the weather like in Mexico?

Mexico is a vast country, stretching over 750,000 square miles. As such, the weather varies by region. Throughout Mexico, there is a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season runs from May through November, and the dry season from December through April.

Gulf Coast: Weather in the Gulf Coast is hot and humid, with lots of rain in the summer months. July is the hottest and wettest month of the year. The annual average temperature is 77 degrees.

Southern Mexico: The southern regions of Mexico which include Oaxaca and Chiapas tend to get the most rain. This weather in the valleys and coastal plains can be exceptionally hot, while the weather in cities of higher altitudes is cooler.

Yucatan Peninsula: The Yucatan Peninsula is a popular cruise destination, with its port city of Cancun. Temperatures stay warm and consistent throughout the year with an average of 78 degrees annually.

Heading south of the border? Consider getting travel insurance before you pack your bags. Even though Mexico is a nearby destination with direct flights for many Americans, it’s still international travel, and you may benefit from a travel insurance policy that can protect your nonrefundable travel booking costs and offer medical support.

Although travel insurance can add to the cost of travel, it offers peace of mind and can safeguard you against unforeseen circumstances that pop up during your trip. A comprehensive travel insurance policy can provide financial protection for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected travel disruptions.

Read on to learn why Mexico travel insurance is often a good idea, how much you’ll pay, what’s covered, and how to find the best policies.

The 5 Best Travel Insurance Policies for Mexico

The best travel insurance for Mexico should offer the coverage you need at a reasonable price. We’ve run the numbers for policy scenarios based on age, coverage, and activities so you can get an idea of what Mexico travel insurance policies look like.

Consider these travel insurance policies for your trip to Mexico:

Snapping up cheap travel insurance is fairly easy for young travelers, as insurance companies tend to offer favorable rates for young adults. We were quoted just $16 for a 25-year-old visiting Mexico . This Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection ExactCare Lite plan offers relatively low trip cancellation coverage of up to $500 and up to $750 for trip cancellation. Still, it has $10,000 in secondary medical and $100,000 in medical evacuation benefits.

While seniors don’t get to take advantage of ultra-cheap travel insurance, Nationwide’s Essential plan offers good coverage at a reasonable price. For $93.95, a 65-year-old visiting Mexico can get trip cancellation coverage up to $2,500 and trip interruption coverage up to $3,125 . Primary medical coverage offers up to $75,000 in benefits, and there’s also $250,000 in medical evacuation benefits.

CFAR allows you to get reimbursed for nonrefundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip for any reason. Battleface’s Discovery Plan was quoted to us for $104.21 with up to $2,500 in CFAR trip cancellation coverage for a 45-year-old visiting Mexico. While it excels in trip cancellation coverage, this policy has no trip interruption coverage. Secondary medical benefits are up to $100,000, and medical evacuation coverage offers up to $500,000.

If you’re planning adventurous activities in Mexico, you need a travel insurance policy for adventure tours that will cover you even if you get hurt. Travel insurance is worth it when you have significant nonrefundable travel expenses or concerns about the cost of medical care or evacuation at your destination . It’s also helpful if you might need travel assistance .

You might not be too worried about losing nonrefundable travel expenses if you’ve booked cheap travel deals to Mexico or if your bookings are fully refundable. But if you’ve booked costly Mexico travel plans that you can’t get refunded, travel insurance can give you flexibility and peace of mind if those plans change.

Even though Mexico is just across the border, you shouldn’t plan on your U.S.-based health insurance to offer coverage while you travel to Mexico. Travel insurance generally offers emergency medical coverage that can alleviate financial concerns if you get sick or hurt while in Mexico. That’s helpful if you pick up Montezuma’s revenge or mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria or Zika virus .

For more serious concerns, medical evacuation coverage can get you to qualified medical care or bring you home. The availability of medical care in Mexico varies depending on where you’re visiting, so it could be a great distance to reach a medical facility equipped to treat you. Medical evacuations can be costly, and most travel insurance policies offer 6-figure benefits if you need them.

Cruise travel insurance can be beneficial if you’re planning a cruise to Mexico. Cruise travel tends to be unforgiving with refunds, and you could lose your deposit or more. Generally, cruise lines don’t offer refunds if you cancel within 14 or 30 days before your cruise. But if you have cruise travel insurance , you could get a refund.

While trip cancellation, trip interruption, and medical coverage are the primary benefits of most travel insurance policies for Mexico, travel assistance services can help you when you need it most. Generally, travel insurance assistance hotlines can help with medical referrals, emergency prescription replacement assistance, emergency cash, roadside assistance, travel rebooking, and more.

Expect to pay 5% to 10% of your total trip cost for comprehensive travel insurance for Mexico. For a $2,500 trip, for example, that’s $125 to $250. That generally includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage for at least the cost of your trip, emergency medical and evacuation coverage, and 24-hour travel assistance . However, your travel insurance costs can vary depending on factors that influence policy costs, including:

  • Additional features such as CFAR
  • Coverage options
  • Deductibles and limits
  • Travel destination
  • Traveler age
  • Trip duration

What Mexico Travel Insurance Covers

Travel insurance coverage depends on the policy you select, but you can generally expect comprehensive travel insurance for Mexico to include:

  • 24/7 Travel Assistance: Whether you need help finding help in a medical emergency, need replacement credit cards or identification, or have to rebook travel, support is available from travel insurance hotlines.
  • Emergency Medical: Travel insurance generally offers financial support for medical emergencies with primary or secondary medical insurance.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Travel insurance can pay for costly emergency medical evacuations if you’re seriously ill or injured and need to be moved for medical care.
  • Lost or Delayed Baggage: Baggage protection offers coverage if your baggage is lost, stolen, damaged, or delayed and you need to buy replacement items.
  • Rental Car Damage: Some travel insurance policies can provide reimbursement if your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen while you’re on a covered trip.
  • Trip Cancellation: You can cancel your trip for covered reasons and get reimbursed for nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Trip Interruption: While traveling, trip interruption coverage can offer refunds for nonrefundable travel expenses if you need to cut your travel short.

With many options for travel insurance, you can customize your travel insurance for Mexico and choose as little or as much coverage as you need . Additional coverage options may include adventure sports or CFAR coverage, which allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and receive partial reimbursement.

CFAR coverage can be especially helpful if you’re traveling during hurricane season and want to be able to cancel your trip if there’s a chance of a storm hitting during your travel dates.

These coverages can add to your travel insurance policy’s cost, so if you’re hoping to get cheap Mexico travel insurance, limiting your policy to primarily trip cancellation and medical coverage may be helpful.

If you’re visiting an area of Mexico with travel advisories for crime and kidnapping , you might consider a kidnapping insurance policy . This type of policy, commonly known as kidnap, ransom, or extortion insurance, is more common for business travel than personal. It can pay a ransom if you’re kidnapped while traveling. Kidnapping coverage is generally not covered by comprehensive travel insurance, so you need a separate policy if you want this type of coverage.

As you shop for Mexico travel insurance policies, consider these important factors that can affect your experience, costs, and coverage:

  • Cancellation Timeframe: Verify the cancellation window, which is how long before your trip you need to cancel it to receive full reimbursement.
  • Cost: It’s a good idea to get multiple quotes from insurance companies to compare prices and coverage before choosing a policy.
  • Coverage Availability: Check the policy’s coverage to make sure it has all of the coverage areas you want, such as trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, and emergency medical treatment and evacuation. Also, look for additional coverage options such as adventure sports and CFAR.
  • Coverage Limits: Understand how much you’ll be reimbursed in specific situations, such as canceling your trip or needing emergency medical coverage.
  • Customer Reviews: Read travel insurance reviews before you purchase your policy to find out how other customers have rated their experience with the provider.
  • Eligibility: Check the fine print to make sure you and your trip are eligible for travel coverage depending on criteria such as age, trip duration, and preexisting conditions.
  • Natural Disasters: Mexico is prone to hurricanes, so make sure your trip cancellation and interruption coverage applies to natural disasters.
  • Policy Limitations: Travel insurance isn’t a blank check, so you should know what’s excluded and how much is covered. For example, a policy might not cover canceling your trip for work reasons, or medical coverage might not apply if you’re injured doing adventure sports.

You might travel to Mexico with a pet, as most pets don’t require a health certificate to enter Mexico . However, travel insurance policies rarely extend to pets, so you’re not covered if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to pet health, and pet medical expenses aren’t covered either. It’s best to get a pet health insurance policy that works internationally if you’re concerned about travel insurance coverage for your pet.

You may have the opportunity to purchase travel insurance when you book your travel, or you can shop independently for Mexico travel insurance.

Travel agents, airlines, and online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia and Booking.com may give you the option to buy travel insurance at booking. These travel insurance policies are generally offered by third-party travel insurance companies working with the travel company.

But before you buy travel insurance at booking, it’s a good idea to compare directly with travel insurance companies . You can do so by visiting the travel insurance company websites or using a travel insurance comparison engine such as Squaremouth , where you can get travel insurance quotes from multiple travel insurance companies simultaneously.

Just don’t wait too long to buy your policy: it’s best to buy travel insurance within 2 weeks of making your first trip payment so you can make the most of your coverage.

Also, consider whether you have travel insurance coverage from another source, such as your credit card. Many travel credit cards, such as Chase Sapphire Reserve ® and The Platinum Card ® from American Express , offer travel insurance benefits. Depending on your benefits, you could get coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, baggage delay or loss, rental car damage, medical treatment, medical evacuation, and more from your credit card. Just be sure to check policy limitations and exclusions and consider getting a travel insurance policy if your credit card’s coverage isn’t enough.

Best travel insurance UK 2024 guide

travel insurance mexico uk

We all deserve a break now and then. And the last thing you want to think of when booking your holiday is something going wrong. But it’s better to be prepared than caught off guard. That’s why you should always consider travel insurance when going on a trip.

But how can you find the best travel insurance policy for your needs? Read our guide below to find out more.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects you financially if your trip away doesn’t go as planned and you incur unexpected expenses for delays, losses or medical treatment.

All travellers can benefit from travel insurance. But travel insurance is particularly important if you are going on an independent trip without a tour operator, because if something goes wrong, you will have no other help.

There are three main types of travel insurance:

  • Single-trip cover: this is the most typical form of travel insurance, covering you for a one-off trip or holiday. There will be a time limit on the cover that can range anywhere between one month and 365 days
  • Annual multi-trip cover: this allows you to make multiple trips, or have multiple holidays, in a 12-month period, all under the same travel insurance policy. There may be a cap on how long each individual trip can be
  • Long stay, or backpacker, cover: this is normally used for around the world trips, gap years, and longer cruises, and can last for up to 18 months

To find the best UK travel insurance, compare policies before you go to ensure you get the right coverage for you and the specific trip you’re planning.

How to find the best travel insurance policy

icons8-scales-96

When comparing policies to find the best travel insurance for your trip, you should consider:

  • Type of cover you need
  • Excess (how much you’ll be expected to pay out yourself before the policy will cover you)
  • Amount of medical coverage, and why pre-existing conditions aren’t included
  • Limit on baggage claims
  • Coverage for specific sports and activities
  • Any potential rewards and discounts
  • Add-ons, such as gadget insurance

Best travel insurance deals and discounts

Looking for the best travel insurance deals from the best travel insurance companies? In most cases, the easiest way to find the best travel insurance deals is to use a comparison website. Travel insurance comparison websites let you compare costs and coverage side by side to find the best UK travel insurance.

The four main comparison websites – Moneysupermarket, Comparethemarket, Confused.com and GoCompare – also often have certain deals and discounts when you buy travel insurance from them, offering some of the best travel insurance deals on the market.

Moneysupermarket : Find the same deal for less, and it will price match and give you a choice of a £20 gift card. Only on annual travel insurance.

Comparethemarket : Two for one cinema tickets with Meerkat Movies and savings at restaurants when you dine out or order pizza in with Meerkat Meals, as well as 25 per cent off coffee and pastries at Caffè Nero every day of the week through the Meerkat app.

(In November 2023, Confused.com and GoCompare had no deals or discounts for travel insurance).

Price is obviously a big consideration when you are looking for the best travel insurance – you’ve probably already spent a lot on your holiday. But you may be able to get much better coverage for just a few pounds extra, so it’s worth scrolling down the comparison site’s list of providers before buying.

Medical costs abroad will undoubtedly be the biggest expense you face if you fall ill abroad, so don’t scrimp on those.

Then think about your next biggest expense (probably cancellation/interruption of your trip) and make sure that you have high-value coverage for that.

If you find you can get much higher coverage (the maximum amount you can claim per type of claim, such as medical or baggage) for not very much more money, go for the slightly more expensive option.

Going direct

Comparison sites won’t always find you the cheapest deals, however. For example, Direct Line offers some of the best travel insurance with Covid cover and is not on comparison websites.

Some of the best travel insurance companies also offer discounts for buying directly from them, as follows:

Bundled coverage options

When looking for the best travel insurance for your holiday, it can make sense to buy a bundle of coverage under one policy.

Comparison websites will often offer add-on gadget cover, winter sports cover or cruise cover all under the one policy. If you need that extra cover, it is typically cheaper to buy your travel insurance this way rather than as separate policies.

What is covered by travel insurance?

The best travel insurance companies will offer you comprehensive coverage across all types of claims. It’s easy to compare the best travel insurance deals using a comparison website.

Medical coverage

This covers you for medical expenses you incur if you become ill or have an accident while away. The best UK travel insurance will have a high level of medical coverage.

For example, medical coverage will pay for any necessary treatment if you come down with severe food poisoning or you fall through a window and have to be taken to hospital in an ambulance.

  • Avoid hefty bills or debt for medical assistance outside the UK
  • Access better treatment – for example, at private vs public hospitals
  • Often, as long as you declare existing conditions or pending treatment or tests, you are covered if you fall ill during your trip (check policy exclusions)
  • Even the best travel insurance companies will likely charge you more if you have a pre-existing medical condition
  • You might have to pay part or all your medical expenses first, then claim on the policy afterwards
  • Even the best travel insurance companies do not cover events that happen after you have consumed alcohol excessively or taken recreational drugs or other substances

Trip cancellation/interruption

This insurance pays out the cost of your missed trip if you have to cancel or cut your holiday short due to unforeseen circumstances.

For example, cancellation insurance would normally pay out if you broke your leg just before you were due to travel and had to cancel your trip.

Interruption insurance would cover you if you had to come home early for certain reasons beyond your control – for example, if the area you were staying in was engulfed in wildfires.

  • Money you would have lost on pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses is paid to you under the policy
  • It can be especially valuable if the trip you are planning is very expensive, as this is money you would lose if you couldn’t go
  • You’ll usually only be covered if your trip is cancelled or cut short for specific reasons listed in your policy
  • You usually won’t be covered if you miss your flight because you are held by customs or cancel because of a work issue or a pre-existing medical condition that is not covered

Baggage cover

This insurance covers the cost of replacing your luggage if it is lost or stolen.

For example, if an airline loses your luggage in transit or your suitcase is stolen from your hostel while you’re away, you can make a claim for the cost of replacing its contents.

You may also be able to claim for costs related to baggage delay if the airline temporarily misplaced your baggage.

  • You can claim for the actual cash value of your belongings or the cost of replacing them (whichever is less)
  • High-value items, such as jewellery or sports equipment, can be very expensive to replace without travel insurance
  • Standard policies usually place per item and total limits on claims.
  • If you are taking very expensive items away, check your policy carefully to ensure that you’re covered (and potentially get a separate policy)
  • Some items could be covered by your home insurance policy, so check your policy carefully to see what is any isn’t. It’s also important to note that, should a lost item be covered by both policies, you can only claim once; an attempt to claim twice would be considered fraud

Personal liability

This insurance covers you if you are held responsible for harming another person or damaging their property.

For example, it covers you in situations where you cause serious damage to your holiday accommodation or accidentally stumble into someone else, causing them to need medical treatment.

  • The cost of defending yourself in a legal case or repairing/replacing damage could be extremely costly without travel insurance
  • Your travel insurance company will take over dealing with a foreign legal system
  • You’re covered for the cost of any compensation (up to certain limits)

Limits:

  • Not all travel insurance provides personal liability as standard
  • Policies may exclude personal liability while you partake in adventure activities
  • Claims related to you committing a crime or damage by wilful negligence won’t be covered
  • You likely will not be covered if you admit liability or make an offer to pay before talking to your insurer

Finding the best travel insurance with Covid cover

Looking for the best travel insurance with Covid cover? Many travel insurance policies now include cancellation cover for reasons related to Covid. This often applies within two weeks of being due to travel, according to the Association of British Insurers, but individual policies can vary.

To make a claim, insurers often require proof in the form of a medically approved positive Covid test. A lateral flow test or self-diagnosis is usually not accepted.

What Covid-related cover to look for

The best travel insurance with Covid cover should include the following:

  • Cover if you can’t start your trip because you tested positive for Covid before travelling
  • Cover if you or family members cannot return home because you/they test positive for Covid during the holiday
  • Cover for additional costs, such as alternative flights, accommodation and Covid tests
  • Cover if you cannot reach your final destination during transit due to Covid-19

Travel insurance providers with comprehensive Covid cover

Looking for the best travel insurance providers with Covid cover? Most travel insurance policies now offer some kind of Covid cover, but Churchill, Direct Line, M&S and Aviva have some of the most comprehensive offerings, with cover for cancellations and expenses related to Covid.

Tips for selecting the best UK travel insurance packages

Need some help picking the best UK travel insurance packages to make sure that you get the best travel insurance deals? Here are some tips for picking the best policy features for you.

Coverage limits

When looking for the best travel insurance companies to go with, check coverage limits. These are the maximum amounts your travel insurer will pay if you need to claim. You’ll see when you compare travel insurance policies that coverage limits vary for each type of claim and between policies.

The government-backed MoneyHelper website recommends that the best UK travel insurance should have the following minimum coverage for each type of claim:

  • Medical: £1m or more for travel to Europe and £2m or more for the US
  • Cancellation/interruption: £2,000 or more
  • Missed departure: £500 or more
  • Delay: £200 or more
  • Baggage cover: £1,500 or more
  • Personal liability cover: £2 million or more

Deductibles/excess

Deductibles, also known as the excess, is the amount you have to pay out of your own pocket before your travel insurance will start paying for your claim.

You have to make a trade-off when it comes to choosing the excess and the best travel insurance policy for you.

The lower the excess on a travel insurance policy, the better for you if you have to claim because you will have less to pay from your own pocket (or, more often, deducted from your claim).

But lower excess travel insurance policies are more expensive because the insurer knows it has more to pay out if you claim. Higher excess policies are cheaper, but you’ll have more deducted from your claim.

An exclusion on a travel insurance policy is an event the policy will not cover you for.

Common exclusions on a standard travel insurance policy may not be obvious. According to the ABTA – The Travel Association, these include:

  • Incidents that occur after drinking too much alcohol or taking drugs
  • Theft of unattended possessions
  • Sports, extreme sports and activities such as skiing, white water rafting and bungee jumping
  • Medical treatment resulting from existing medical conditions you have not declared or conditions preventable by vaccine or advisable medication, such as antimalarials
  • Medical costs if you stay abroad after your doctor says you are fit to return to the UK
  • Strikes and industrial action if it was known when you booked your trip
  • Rescheduled flights where the airline has cancelled and then rescheduled your flight
  • Travel to destinations where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel

To get the best travel insurance deals, one way around some of these exclusions is to buy add-ons for adventure activities. In addition, make sure to declare all pre-existing conditions and keep an eye out for any travel disruptions before you book.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or medical conditions you have and are aware of before you travel.

Travel insurance companies will ask you to disclose any pre-existing conditions. If you use a comparison website, it will be among the first questions you’re asked before it shows you quotes. It’s important to be honest.

Some travel insurance companies, but not all, will offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions, while others will offer cover but exclude any claims arising from that medical condition. This will depend on the person being covered and the medical condition.

Most price comparison websites include an option to show insurers who do offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, so that would be a good place to start.

The following are likely to be considered pre-existing conditions you should disclose, according to the government-backed MoneyHelper website:

  • A condition where you are on a list for an operation
  • A condition where you are waiting for test results
  • Anything you have been to the doctor about in the last year, including minor things
  • Any serious conditions you’ve ever had – for example, cancer, heart trouble, respiratory problems or a mental health breakdown

A good tip for everyone, but especially if you have a pre-existing condition, is to buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. If your condition gets worse and forces you to cancel your plans, you’ll be covered from the day the policy starts.

On family group policies, the cost will be determined based on the riskiest traveller (according to insurers), which could be someone with a pre-existing condition or an older individual. In this case, it is often cheaper for the group for that person to get a separate policy.

Add-on options

Add-ons are extras you can purchase in addition to a standard travel insurance policy. They cost a bit more, but you may find you’re not covered without them.

Gadget insurance

This covers things that a standard policy may not, such as your mobile phone or laptop. If these items are covered, you may find the claim limits are far less than the cost of replacing them.

Close-up of a person holding a phone taking a picture of a beaut

Before you add this option to your travel insurance, check your home insurance policy, because you may already be covered.

Winter sports/adventure activities

Riskier activities, such as skiing or white water rafting, often require extra holiday insurance because insurers think that you are more likely to need to make a claim doing these things.

Winter sports/adventure activities cover is worth getting, or you may find you are not covered for medical expenses if something goes wrong.

Standard travel insurance is generally meant for land-based holidays so you’ll need to opt for a specialist cruise policy if your holiday is a cruise.

European FCDO travel advice extension

Most standard travel insurance policies are invalid if you travel when the FCDO advises against “all but essential travel”.

This add-on allows you to travel to Europe with a valid travel insurance policy, even if the FCDO has advised against it.

This can be an expensive add-on, but if you really must travel to a risky area, you will need this extension in order to make sure you have cover.

Best holiday insurance summary

Choosing the right travel insurance is an essential part of enjoying peace of mind while you are on holiday.

When looking for the best travel insurance deals, don’t just pick the cheapest policy. Instead, look for the cover limits that match your requirements. For example, baggage cover of £5,000 isn’t worth having if your baggage is worth £1,000; cancellation cover up to £10,000 isn’t worth having if your holiday cost you £2,000.

The easiest way to compare the best travel insurance is usually by using a travel insurance comparison website.

Think about the sort of activities you’ll be doing while you’re away. You may need extra holiday insurance for things such as winter sports or scuba diving or if you are going on a cruise.

Be honest about any pre-existing conditions when buying your travel insurance, or you won’t be covered if you have to claim.

The best travel insurance is a safety net for you and your family to enjoy your trip away stress-free, knowing that you’re covered for everything from medical expenses to cancellations if things go wrong.

Frequently asked questions about the best travel insurance UK packages

Is travel insurance necessary for domestic travel within the uk.

Even where medical costs in the UK are covered by the NHS, a sudden illness could lead to other expenses, forcing you to cancel your trip, the costs of which travel insurance would cover.

Lost or stolen luggage and broken gadgets or other claims for damage can just as easily occur in the UK as abroad.

What is annual travel insurance, and is it a good option for frequent travellers?

Annual travel insurance is a policy that covers you for multiple trips away within any 12-month period. It is often cheaper than buying a separate policy for each trip if you are planning to go away multiple times in one year.

Annual travel insurance is also useful if you are planning a long trip visiting several countries, as often insurers require you to buy travel insurance before you leave the UK rather than abroad mid-trip.

Are there any travel insurance companies that specialise in certain types of trips or travellers?

Specialist travel insurers cater to specific groups of people. It can make sense to seek out travel insurers that cover your needs.

How do I make a claim with my travel insurance company?

To claim on your travel insurance while you are away, make sure that you take your policy number with you and the emergency number for your insurer. If you are travelling abroad, take any international numbers too.

Call your insurer as soon as you realise you need to make a claim. Keep all receipts and medical expense forms. If you are travelling with other people, make them aware of your policy details and the insurer’s phone number in case they need to call on your behalf.

To make a claim when you return home, check the following:

  • You haven’t left it too late to make a claim
  • What you’re claiming for is covered
  • The excess is not more than the value of your claim (if so, it’s not worth claiming)

Notify your insurer as soon as possible for a claim form, send it back fast and keep a copy of it. You should also include copies of paperwork to support your claim, such as receipts or medical certificates (keep copies of the originals in case your claim is queried or refused).

Health Insurance in Mexico for UK Expats

Table of contents.

Mexico has been a popular country to relocate to for UK expats . Although there are travel warnings , many UK expats continue to move to Mexico and other places worldwide. Brexit or the UK’s decision to withdraw from the European Union has been a factor for many.

While this is exciting, it also presents unique challenges that require careful planning. Assessing travel insurance, health insurance, and healthcare in Mexico for expats is critical when moving abroad, particularly for UK expats relocating to Mexico.

Mexico attracts expats of various nationalities . From Americans to the Spanish, Mexico is especially popular among retirees. There are many groups that UK expats can join to build their own community, too.

There are also many cities and regions to live in. Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco, and Mexico City are popular choices, with many UK expats moving to Mexico City.

In fact, it is the highest-ranked destination for living and working abroad due to its cheap cost of living. The cost of living in Mexico is about half that of living in the UK.

Many UK expats in Mexico also reported having no difficulty settling into the country because of welcoming locals and the expat community. Although community and affordability are important, what about healthcare in Mexico for expats?

In this guide, we will delve deeper into how health insurance works for UK expats in Mexico. We will discuss the importance of expat insurance, its coverage, and how to select the most suitable insurance plan that caters to your individual needs.

We will also discuss employee benefits that UK expats in Mexico can receive. Whether you’re an employer sending UK employees to Mexico or an employee, here’s everything you need to know about healthcare in Mexico for expats.

Why Do UK Expats in Mexico Need Health Insurance?

Both private and public healthcare systems across the globe are diverse and unique, and Mexico is no different.

While Mexico boasts a public healthcare system, it may not offer the same care and coverage as in the UK. This discrepancy can lead to unexpected medical expenses and inadequate healthcare services for UK expats in Mexico. Indeed, healthcare in Mexico for expats may look different. This can be particularly stressful in a foreign country.

Having health and travel insurance is therefore essential for UK expats in Mexico.

This not only ensures that healthcare in Mexico for expats is covered but also ensures:

  • Access to high-quality healthcare services
  • Necessary medical attention without incurring exorbitant costs
  • A safety net so expats can navigate their new environment with peace of mind
  • Continuous medical care for pre-existing conditions
  • Regular checkups and monitoring for prevention and detection of diseases and medical conditions
  • Emergency repatriation in the event of a serious medical emergency

Benefits of Health and Travel Insurance for UK Expats in Mexico

Expat health and travel insurance is valuable for UK expats in Mexico. It offers many benefits that contribute to a secure and worry-free expat life.

Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Comprehensive Worldwide Coverage

Health and travel insurance in Mexico typically provides comprehensive coverage for a broad spectrum of medical services. These include routine doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, and prescription medications.

This extensive coverage ensures that UK expats have access to the healthcare they need, whether it's for routine check-ups, preventive care, or emergency treatments. It provides a safety net to help mitigate the financial risk associated with unexpected health issues or accidents.

Another significant advantage is worldwide coverage. This means that UK expats can receive medical treatment not only in Mexico but also in other countries.

For those  UK expats in Mexico who enjoy travelling throughout South America or North America, health insurance can be handy as it provides them with the reassurance of getting the necessary medical treatment they might need during their travel.

This global coverage is also beneficial for those who travel frequently or have family members living in different parts of the world.

It provides the flexibility to seek medical care wherever it's most convenient or necessary, ensuring that geographical boundaries do not limit access to quality healthcare and your time in Mexico.

  • Language Assistance

Health insurance is also beneficial because it provides access to language assistance, especially while navigating Mexico's public healthcare system.

Navigating the healthcare system in a foreign country can be daunting, especially when faced with a language barrier.

Many expat health and travel insurance in Mexico offer language assistance services, which can be invaluable for UK expats in Mexico who don’t speak Spanish.

Although many healthcare professionals in Mexico speak English, these services can help UK expats communicate effectively with healthcare providers and ensure they fully understand their medical conditions and treatment options when language is an issue.

This can lead to better healthcare outcomes and a more comfortable healthcare experience.

  • Emergency Evacuation

In a medical emergency, Mexico's expat health and travel insurance often covers emergency evacuation services. If a UK expat requires specialized medical treatment unavailable locally, they can be transported to a facility for the necessary care.

This can be a lifesaving benefit, especially in remote areas with limited access to advanced medical facilities. It provides an additional layer of security, knowing that you can access the best possible care in a critical situation.

Importance of Health and Travel Insurance for Young UK Expats in Mexico

Young UK expats in Mexico may not think healthcare insurance is important, but accidents happen. Get good healthcare and travel insurance in Mexico to protect you from expensive accidents.

Your plan could cover up to a certain percentage of the accident bill. For example, you would only pay GBP 200 if your insurance covered 80% of a bill totalling GBP 1,000!

What Does Healthcare in Mexico For Expats Look Like?

Mexico's healthcare system is comprehensive and affordable, with public and private healthcare facilities compared to many countries.

However, the quality of care can vary depending on where you are. Stretched for resources, there aren't as many services in the countryside. The cities, however, are well-equipped. For example, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara are the best cities to receive medical care for UK expats in Mexico.

The healthcare system aims to provide universal coverage through the Instituto de Medicina y Seguridad Social Bienestar ( IMSS-Bienestar ) for all Mexican residents – including UK expats in Mexico. This was previously known as the Instituto de Salud para el Bienestar (INSABI) .

In addition, there is the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) . However, these healthcare institutions are undergoing significant changes as the country transitions from INSABI to IMSS-Bienestar. These changes can affect various parts of the health insurance process including how patients are treated.

UK expats in Mexico can access the IMSS and ISSSTE if eligible. Eligibility depends on your visa. Beneficiaries must have Mexican residency or work for a Mexican employer. When you work for a Mexican employer, you are automatically enrolled in IMSS.

You may even be entitled to employee benefits in Mexico that cover private healthcare, such as private doctors and services, along with travel insurance.  If you work for a UK branch or subsidiary, you could be entitled to not only employee benefits in Mexico but also have the same employee benefits as you did in the UK .

COVID-19 and Healthcare for UK Expats in Mexico

The Mexican healthcare system was hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mexico experienced the highest excess mortality and significant disruptions to other care in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). There were approximately 290,000 deaths during the pandemic, and many are unrecorded due to the lack of testing.

In 2020, less than half of Mexicans were vaccinated. This is the third-lowest vaccination rate against COVID-19 in the OECD.

Underfunded and understaffed, Mexico only spends about 5.5% of its GDP on healthcare today. What does this mean for UK expats in Mexico?

Healthcare services may not always meet the standards that UK expats in Mexico are accustomed to. While the UK's National Health Service (NHS) is criticized for long wait times, wait times in Mexico may be even longer.

Furthermore, Mexico’s health coverage and financial protection for its population still lags behind the OECD average. Only 48% of the Mexican population is satisfied with the availability of quality healthcare, compared to an average of 71% among OECD countries.

How Can UK Expats in Mexico Access Healthcare?

The cost of health insurance in Mexico for expats depends on their visas and how long they intend to stay in Mexico. Here are three levels of healthcare that Mexico offers ‌UK expats in Mexico.

  • Base-Level Healthcare: IMSS-Bienestar (previously INSABI)

This program is universal. Its main goal is to provide care for those who cannot get it from the IMSS or ISSSTE. UK expats in Mexico are eligible for this program as long as they are Mexican residents.

There is no age limit or cost to enroll, but your location of residence may affect your eligibility since this program is meant to help poorer communities who cannot afford IMSS, ISSSTE, or private insurance.

Consequently, not everything is covered. Prescribed medications, cancer, diabetes, long-term treatments, or significant surgeries are not fully covered. In the past, INSABI only covered up to 40-60% of these costs. The coverage is subject to change since the program is changing at the time of writing.

How Do UK Expats in Mexico Enroll in IMSS-Bienestar?

To enroll, you must bring your Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP), your personal ID code number, your passport, visa, and any other identification documents.

  • Mid-Level Healthcare: IMSS and ISSSTE

IMSS for UK Expats in Mexico

IMSS covers surgery, medication, hospitalization, and compensation for work-related illnesses or accidents for up to 52 weeks.

It also assigns a primary care physician. The IMSS is more comprehensive and also covers spouses, partners, children up to 16 years old (or 25 years old if the children are students), and parents (if parents live with the insured individual).

How Do UK Expats in Mexico Enroll in IMSS?

UK expats in Mexico are automatically enrolled in IMSS and contribute payroll taxes when they work for a Mexican employer or subsidiary. Enrollment and contributions are mandatory, even if supplemental insurance is provided to UK expats in Mexico.

Retired or self-employed foreign residents with legal residency in Mexico can enroll in IMSS voluntarily and contribute if they choose to.

To enroll, UK expats in Mexico can apply in person at their nearest IMSS office or online with the required documentation.

This includes:

  • Residency visa
  • Proof of accommodation (rental agreement)
  • IMSS application form
  • Birth certificate, marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Two photographs
  • A receipt of the first year’s premium.

This is a long-term solution for UK expats staying in Mexico for more than six months.

ISSSTE for UK Expats in Mexico

The ISSSTE is similar to the IMSS. However, it is specifically tailored for government employees, which may not apply to most UK expats in Mexico. It costs nothing to enroll since the state pays for it.

How Do UK Expats in Mexico Enroll in ISSSTE?

UK expats in Mexico can access and qualify for the ISSSTE if they have an FM2 or FM3 visa. This visa is an excellent pathway for long-term residency in Mexico. To qualify for these visas, UK citizens must prove they have the funds to live in Mexico, invest, or bring professional skills to Mexico.

  • Top-Level Healthcare: Private Health Insurance

Some UK expats in Mexico may receive supplemental private health insurance as part of their employee benefits in Mexico when working for a UK or Mexican company in addition to the national health programs mentioned above. Anyone can purchase private health insurance to gain direct access to private clinics, doctors, and hospitals.

Types of Private Health and Travel Insurance in Mexico

Private health and travel insurance in Mexico covers services that are not covered by the IMSS and ISSSTE. This includes dental, vision, physiotherapy, private care, evacuation, therapy, treatment for pre-existing health conditions, and more. Here are two types of private health and travel insurance for UK expats in Mexico.

1. International Health Insurance

International health and travel insurance in Mexico is specifically designed to provide coverage for UK citizens living outside their home country. These plans cover:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospitalization
  • Prescription drugs
  • Medical evacuation, and repatriation in the case of a serious medical emergency.

International health insurance plans are typically more expensive than local plans, but they offer the advantage of worldwide coverage. If you travel frequently (like a digital nomad ) or split your time between Mexico and the US, you will be covered in both places. This makes your time in Mexico more enjoyable.

Great options include:

  • William Russell Insurance (caters to UK expats and UK employees worldwide)
  • SafetyWing (caters to digital nomads)
  • IMG Global (only caters to medical needs)
  • Allianz Global Assistance (caters to short-term stays)
  • Cigna Healthcare (caters to big companies with employees worldwide)

2. Local Mexican Health Insurance

Another option for US expats in Mexico is to purchase a local health insurance plan, designed for Mexican residents. These plans only offer coverage within the country and are often more affordable. Local Mexican health insurance plans can be a good option if you spend most of your time in the country. There is so much to explore!

However, it's important to note that these plans may not offer the same coverage as international plans, particularly for more complex medical procedures or treatments.

Choosing the Right Insurance Plan For UK Expats In Mexico

Selecting the right health insurance plan in Mexico for UK expats involves careful consideration of several factors. Here are some key points to consider:

Coverage Options

Different insurance plans offer varying levels of coverage. It's crucial to review the coverage options and ensure that the plan aligns with your specific healthcare needs.

Consider factors such as the frequency of doctor visits, potential hospital stays, prescription medications, and any pre-existing conditions you may have.

Network of Healthcare Providers

It's important to check if the insurance plan has a network of healthcare providers in Mexico. Access to a wide and flexible network of doctors, hospitals, and clinics ensures you can choose and receive quality healthcare services conveniently.

It's important to note that certain health coverage systems may fluctuate from time to time, due to the services offered and covered.

The cost of the insurance plan, including monthly premiums, deductibles, and copays, is a significant factor to consider. It's important to find a balance between affordability and the level of coverage provided.

Compare different insurance plans to find the one that offers the best value for your money. Remember, the cheapest plan may not always provide the best coverage, and the most expensive plan may not always be necessary.

Customer Reviews, Reputation, and Service

It's beneficial to research the insurance provider's reputation and read customer reviews. This will give you an insight into the level of customer service and satisfaction you can expect.

Look for insurance providers with a strong track record and positive customer feedback. Also, consider their customer service – are they easy to reach? Can they provide help efficiently?

Purchasing Health and Travel Insurance in Mexico

There are several ways to purchase health insurance for UK expats in Mexico. Insurance brokers can help UK expats in Mexico find insurance that fits their needs.

If you prefer to do it yourself, you can research and buy insurance from insurance marketplaces, like International Citizens Insurance or the insurance companies themselves! This might be time-consuming, but you could land a good deal.

It's essential to verify the credibility of your insurance broker, the online platform, and the company you are buying insurance from. Ensure that it's secure before providing any personal or financial information.

Considering All the Factors Before Selecting Health Insurance

Health insurance is crucial for UK expats living in Mexico. It provides peace of mind and ensures expat employees can access quality healthcare services when needed. Expat insurance offers comprehensive coverage, worldwide access to medical treatment, language assistance, and emergency evacuation services.

When choosing an insurance plan, consider the coverage options, network of healthcare providers, cost, and customer reviews. By selecting the right insurance plan, UK expats can enjoy their lives in Mexico, knowing their health is protected.

Remember, health insurance is not just about financial protection; it's about ensuring access to the best possible care when needed.

So, take the time to research, compare, and choose the best health insurance plan that suits your needs and your employees’ needs. Health is wealth, and it's worth investing in.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Mexico

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Mexico. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Mexico can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins.
