The Carnival Horizon: Complete Photo Tour of Carnival Cruise Line's Megaship

Carnival Cruise Line’s second Vista-class vessel Horizon debuted in April 2018. With this ship, Carnival tweaks its successful Vista formula by adding new restaurants and musical revues, plus a Dr. Seuss-themed splash park.

Although smaller than Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas —a 5,500-passenger behemoth that launched the same month—Horizon offers 13 entertainment venues, 12 places to eat, and several pools. The ship appeals to passengers who like the wide array of options available on megaships but don’t necessarily need a vessel big enough to be seen from outer space.

Dreamscape, Horizon ’s funnel-shaped atrium centerpiece, rises 24 feet high and consists of more than 2,000 customizable LED tiles. Technicians program Dreamscape to project more than 100 artworks, including drawings made by youngsters at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Since 2010 Carnival has raised more than $13 million for that organization.

At this themed splash park (replacing the signature water slides on other Carnival ships), kids get wet by zipping down Seuss-styled slides and standing under a 300-gallon bucket dump shaped like the Cat in the Hat’s chapeau. A slide named for that mischievous feline sends riders down 450 feet of twists and turns. Polka dots and special lights add to the fun of the 213-foot Thing 1 and Thing 2 slide. A kiddie wet zone entices tots with dripping faucets and water sprays. 

Video technology energizes Horizon ’s Playlist Productions shows. Technicians program LED screens as backdrops, creating fluid sets marked by special effects to complement shows. Horizon stages “Amor Cubano: A Caribbean Dance Romance,” which first appeared on Carnival Vista , as well as three new revues. “Soulbound” delivers rhythm and blues, “Celestial Strings” combines classical music with pop tunes, and “Vintage Pop” highlights jazz and the toe-tapping tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s.

Pair baby back ribs, pulled pork, and cedar-smoked salmon with craft beers at Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse Brewhouse. The new concept eatery from Food Network personality Guy Fieri debuts on Horizon , which also features Guy’s Burger Joint (which we'll visit later). The Smokehouse Brewhouse opens at 5 p.m. with items priced á la carte. You can eat for free at the Pig & Anchor’s barbecue lunch buffet on embarkation day and sea days.   

At Bonsai Teppanyaki, watching the preparation of the meal is almost as enjoyable as eating it. Chefs juggle knives, toss shrimp, and flip eggs in the service of fun and fried rice. A first for Carnival, the restaurant is open for dinner every night and for lunch on sea days. Vegetarian options are available, too.

Bike 150 feet above the deck while savoring panoramic views of the deep blue sea on SkyRide, a thrill attraction that’s also on Vista . A harness tethers you to your bike, which is encased in a pod with open sides. The dual track system allows you to race the cyclist next to you or ignore your fellow rider and pedal at your own pace. Because of SkyRide’s popularity, lines can be long. Consider queuing up on port days when wait times may be shorter than on sea days. Riders must be at least 54 inches tall. 

SkyCourse tests your balance and ability to forget about heights as you make your way across cables, step onto spaced platforms, and walk on beams nearly 150 feet above the deck. Choose either the beginner or intermediate route. Both challenge you for a stretch of 230 feet. Participants must be at least 48 inches tall.  

Both the SkyRide and SkyCourse are part of the ship’s SportSquare complex, but not everything in this area is about high-in-the-sky thrills. You can also putt your way through nine holes of mini golf at SkyGreens, shoot hoops on a basketball court, and play foosball, ping pong, and pool.

The Lido Deck’s pool is the locus of the action. You can listen to a live band, grab a taco from the adjacent BlueIguana Cantina, or load up on salads, sandwiches, and hot entrees from the nearby buffet. The pool’s apron-like shaded areas enable you to dip your toes in the water—a nice option for those aiming to avoid the sun. On sea days expect the pool to be packed, making swimming unlikely. Arrive early if you want to claim a chaise longue.

Get into the game by playing onstage versions of Hasbro classics such as Connect 4, Yahtzee, and Simon Flash. Compete with friends and family or have your posse cheer you on as you vie for prizes.

Serenity, Horizon ’s adults-only area, caters to those who like to sunbathe without the backbeat of bands or a chorus of cackling kids. The retreat comes with comfortable chaise longues, hot tubs, a bar, and Fresh Creations, a salad station that’s available on sea days. Because the complimentary oasis is popular, plan to arrive early to snag a spot. You must be at least 21 to enter.

Bunking in a nautically themed Family Harbor room provides access to a concierge and free meals at four premium restaurants for children ages 11 and younger when they dine with an adult. The only drawback to these rooms is their location on deck 2, beneath the kitchen and two main dining areas. Passengers staying in Family Harbor accommodations on sister-ship Vista  have complained of frequent noise—so choose your cabin carefully. Pictured: Family cabin on Carnival Vista

The big perk for staying in a Family Harbor room is exclusive access to the Family Harbor Lounge, a gathering spot serving complimentary breakfast, afternoon snacks, and, in the evening, milk and cookies.

Little kids will like the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, which features special appearances by the Cat in the Hat along with Thing 1 and Thing 2. In addition to the titular meal, kids can try Truffula Tree pancakes, Fox in Socks steak and eggs, Horton’s cereal-crusted French Toast, and other Seuss-themed entrees. The meal costs a little extra but the selfies are free.

Camp Ocean, Carnival’s children’s program, provides supervised activities for ages 2 through 11. Penguins, ages 2 through 5, play ocean bingo, do arts and crafts, and listen to stories (FYI, counselors will change the diapers of 2-year-olds but not the nappies of those 3 years and older). Stingrays, ages 6 to 8, do arts and crafts, play sports, and enjoy game nights. Sharks, ages 9 to 11, challenge each other with video games, dance at a kids’ disco, decorate T-shirts, and play basketball and volleyball. Sharks may sign themselves in and out of the program if their parents give their consent. For cruisers ages 12 through 14, there’s a dedicated space called Circle “C”.

The Club O2 lounge provides a place to hang out for 15- to 17-year-olds. A buddy-like director eases the group into Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 tournaments, declares scavenger hunt winners, gets the dancing going, and serves as DJ. Since teens sleep in, Club O2 opens in the afternoon and closes down after midnight.

The Cloud 9 Spa offers massages, facials, salt scrubs, seaweed wraps, acupuncture, and other soothing experiences (extra fees apply). Treatments come with access to a thermal suite outfitted with heated chaise longues, steam areas, and a bubbling saltwater pool. If you’re interested in spa services, book them as soon as possible because the most convenient time slots fill quickly.

Seafood Shack serves steamed lobster, peel-and-eat shrimp, crab cake sliders, lobster rolls, oysters, fish-and-chips, and buckets of fried clam strips. Meals here cost extra; steamed lobster is priced by the pound.

Inspired by America’s roadside diners, Guy Fieri’s second Horizon eatery (open for lunch only) serves five types of burgers, including a Pig Patty made out of bacon and a Chilius Maximus topped with cheese, an onion ring, Guy’s secret sauce, and chili. Add onions, sautéed mushrooms, chopped bacon, and other sauces from the toppings bar. All orders come with hand-cut fries, and, best of all, your burger is included in the price of the voyage.

Horizon has the largest and most varied retail offerings in Carnival’s fleet. For the first time, passengers can purchase items by Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Breitling, and Hublot. The ship aims for “retailtainment,” adding beyond-browsing shopping experiences such as designing your own Swarovski crystal jewelry at Hip Fish and attending spirits tastings at Port Side Liquor & Tobacco.

For those seeking poolside sunbathing and a place to soak that’s less crowded than the typically packed Lido deck pool, the Havana accommodations are a good choice. You can pick your price range, choosing an interior, ocean-view, balcony, or cabana suite. The latter features an outdoor patio with a chaise longue and a chair hammock. Because the suites’ patios open to a common deck area, guests in these cabins should feel comfortable with strangers strolling by. The 2018-built Carnival Horizon cruise ship is the second Vista-class (modified Dream-class) vessel in the CCL fleet. Horizon is Carnival's "the most family-friendly ship" with the company's newest kids- and family dedicated staterooms, facilities and amenities. Horizon is Carnival's 26th vessel.

From the same series (Vista-Class sisterships) are the fleetmates Carnival Vista (2016) and Carnival Panorama (2019), as well as the former Costa Cruises ' liners Carnival Venezia (2019 as Costa Venezia) and Carnival Firenze (2020 as Costa Firenze) and Adora Cruises ' ships Adora Magic City (2023) and Adora TBN (2024).

The vessel (IMO number 9767091) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 370039000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ). 

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

The 4000-passenger ship Carnival Horizon offers all Carnival Fun Ship 2.0 details, plus many first-at-sea features, including the Multiplex (the first at sea IMAX theater with a 3-deck large screen); Skyride (extraordinary peddled roller coaster bike ride); Havana cabins complex (with pool, lounge and its own bar); Family Harbor staterooms; the biggest SportsSquare sports complex; Fun Ship 2.0’s BlueIguana Cantina, RedFrog Bar and Alchemy Bar; new show programming; Carnival Cloud 9 Spa and Fitness.

With the 3x Vista-class liners (Vista/2016, Horizon/2018, Panorama/2019) were introduced the fleet-firsts "IMAX Theater at Sea" (87-seats cinema/part of Carnival Multiplex), "SkyRide" (outdoor/aerial bicycle ride/suspended 2-track bike course), Havana Staterooms (cabin complex with a swimming pool, sundeck, lounge, lanai balconies).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Horizon staterooms (1965 total) include 74 Suites, 912 Balcony, 264 Oceanview and 749 Inside, including 35 wheelchair-accessible and 104 "Cloud 9 Spa" cabins, in all 34 grades. Most are sized 185-220-ft2, cabin balconies are sized 35-75 ft2. All Spa staterooms receive exclusive access to private Spa facilities on Panorama Deck and the following amenities: Spa reservations, complimentary use of Thalassotherapy Pool and Thermal Suite, fitness classes and deluxe bath amenities.

Carnival Horizon, like all Vista-class sisterships, has a new cabin category named aft-view extended balcony cabin which is exclusive to the Family Harbor area. Additionally, Carnival Panorama offers 18 tropics-inspired staterooms situated within the well-known Havana section. Just like the other 86 staterooms found within Family Harbor, the brand new aft-view extended balcony cabins boast a colorful nautical theme and is situated adjacent to the Family Harbor Lounge, which is the ultimate family hangout with large TVs and complimentary snacks and breakfast. Located aft on Decks 6-8-9, the Havana staterooms offer exclusive access to the Havana Deck which has a Cuban-themed bar and swimming pool.

The boat has 14 passenger-accessible decks of which 13 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Horizon offers two main dining rooms, Horizons, and Reflections. Horizons hosts a small bar suited for pre-dinner drinks. The main dining rooms feature select items from the onboard steakhouse, available for an additional fee. Horizon also has a Lido buffet. Seafood lovers are pampered with the Seafood Shack - brand new to Carnival fleet, New England-inspired casual eatery located on top deck. It offers both indoor and outdoor seating and the menu includes steamed lobster, lobster rolls, fried shrimp, fried clams, crab cakes, and other seafood surprises. Seafood Shack serves lunch and dinner and is priced a la carte starting at $4.

The ship has a Japanese specialty restaurant named Bonsai Teppanyaki. The new dining venue is located within the Bonsai Sushi restaurant on Promenade Deck.

• The restaurant offers a menu with authentic Far East dishes. A special feature is the live cooking show performed by its talented chefs operating at custom-built stations located at the center of an 8-seat table. Due to its limited seating, reservations are required.
• Each meal at Bonsai Teppanyaki starts with a sampling of 5 appetizers (Miso Soup, Pork Belly Yakitori, Spicy Tuna on Rocks). Combo dinners are also offered. Each meal ends on a note courtesy of Chocolate Bento Box and Green Tea Ice Cream. The restaurant is open for lunch (sea days only) and for dinner (every night). Price (cover charge) is per person and covers the entire meal.

The available on all Fun ships Chef's Table is a dining experience that affords a dozen guests to experience multicourse dinner with the master chef, private cocktail reception and a tour of the galley. This dining option usually takes place in a non-traditional venue, like the library or the galley, and can be booked onboard for US$75 per person.

In mid-January 2018, Carnival announced 4 new craft beers that will be brewed onboard the Horizon ship. The brews were developed by brewmaster Colin Presby. They are offered at Guy’s Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse (Brewhouse), The names of the new draft beers are inspired by the BBQ offerings at the Smokehouse/Brewhouse.

• "ParchedPig Farmhouse Ale" is a lightly hopped dry finish beer.
• "ParchedPig Smoked Porter" is brewed with in-house smoked malt, hickory smoke, and molasses.
• "ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale" has rich amber color and notes of toasted caramel and biscuit.
• "ParchedPig West Coast IPA" is a traditional West Coast India Pale Ale loaded with bitterness and distinctive aroma of pine and citrus.

The current list of draft beers brewed on the ship includes ThirstyFrog Red (clean and light), ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin' IPA (floral flavor, with passion fruit and citrus overtones), ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat (unfiltered lager with banana aroma and spices), FriskyFrog Java Stout (with hints of coffee), ParchedPig West Coast IPA (West Coast IPA/India Pale Ale, citrus and pine aroma), ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale (toasted caramel/biscuit flavored), Miami Guava (primary ingredient is pink guava), ParchedPig Farmhouse Ale (dry beer), ParchedPig Smoked Porter (in-house smoked malt, hickory smoke, molasses), ParchedPig Beach Lager (golden ale available both on tap and in cans/when served in bars/dining venues), Carnival Birthday Beer (golden ale introduced in 2022 for the company's 50th Anniversary).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Long-known for an abundance of entertainment, Carnival is not sitting on its laurels with Horizon. The fun onboard starts with SkyRide, the industry's first open-air, pedal-powered aerial ride. Riders have to climb onboard a hanging bike and "cycle" their way around the 800ft suspended track, 150 feet above sea level.

If you consider that SkyRide does not provide the needed adrenaline-pumping action, SkyCourse ropes circuit do. Both SkyCourse and SkyRide are part of the SportSquare, which also features an indoor hangout, mini-bowling, The Clubhouse, Ping-Pong, sports video gaming, arcade basketball and more.

The Horizon cruise ship offers an expanded "Seuss at Sea" kids program with its "Dr. Suess WaterWorks" (themed water park). The aquapark has 2 distinctly different waterslides (location Deck 12).

• The "Cat in the Hat" waterslide (named "Kaleid-O-Slide" on Carnival Vista) is an enclosed raft slide with length 137 m (450 ft) and several twists and turns. The slide's entrance is a giant replica of the cat's red-and-white hat. The waterslide is colored in red and white, making it one of the ship's most distinctive features.
• The "Fun Things" waterslide (named after the troublemakers Thing 1 and Thing 2) is an enclosed body slide, it features a polka dot-motif and has a length of 65 m (213 ft).

Exclusively for Carnival Horizon, Carnival Cruise Line's entertainment team partnered with celebrity directors from Los Angeles (Broadway) and London (West End) to create 3 new signature shows - part of the onboard "Playlist Productions" revues. The new shows (named "Celestial Strings", "Soulbound", "Vintage Pop") use the full capacity of the interactive LED screens. A 4th show ("Amor Cubano - A Caribbean Dance Romance") is also available on the Horizon ship. It was introduced in 2017 on Carnival Vista.

• "Celestial Strings" show is themed on classical music mixed with modern pop.
• "Soulbound" is a gothic-inspired, New Orleans-themed show featuring R&B music favorites.

Itineraries

Carnival Horizon itinerary program had an inaugural cruise season in the USA with roundtrip mini cruises to Bermuda leaving out of NYC New York . The ship offers 4-night Bermuda short breaks (during spring and summer 2018) in addition to the previously scheduled 8-night Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from homeport NYC (starting May 2018).

The cruise ship's maiden voyage in the Mediterranean was from Barcelona . On May 9, the ship repositions to New York (arriving May 23, 2018) for a series of 8-night Caribbean cruises throughout the summer. On September 22, 2018, the Horizon continues to its next USA homeport Miami , for a year-round schedule of 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries.

Carnival Horizon Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 6243) has volume 133596 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 12164 tons, max draught 8,6 m. The powerplant is based on 5x MAN marine diesel engines (4-stroke, common-rail injection/2x 14V48/60CR plus 3x 8L48/60CR) with combined output 62,4 MW (83680 hp). The propulsion is diesel-electric and based on two ABB Azipod thrusters with combined output 33 MW (44250 hp). The registered shipowner is CARNIVAL HOLDINGS BERMUDA LTD while the registered manager is CARNIVAL CORPORATION.

By gross tonnage/volume, VISTA-class are currently the largest Carnival ships. They also have new for the fleet features, like Multiplex media entertainment complex (IMAX theater - 3-deck high LED screen for first-run movies, plus 3D Thrill cinema), SkyRide (roller coaster with multiple riding bicycles on 2 paralleled tracks), larger SportsSquare complex, Havana Outside complex (pool, jacuzzies, bar, new Havana cruise accommodations), Family Harbor staterooms (with its own family-themed lounge /24-hour dining, concierge, babysitting, entertainment).

The ship's powerplant consists of 5x MAN marine diesel engines (4-stroke, common-rail injection) - two 14V48/60CR and three 8L48/60CR. Their combined power output is 62,4 MW.

Among ship's interior design features is the “Dreamscape”. This is an Atrium-located LED sculpture created by kids hospitalized in St Jude Children’s Research Hospital ( Memphis TN USA ). The 3-deck high artwork was designed by the company Techno Media and consists of 33 different creations, The sculpture's centerpiece has over 2000 flexible LED (custom-made) tiles. This funnel-shaped central part has a height of 24 ft (7,3 m). The artwork is rotating, with patterns based on daytime, cruise port of call or special occasion.

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on March 10, 2017, at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard. After the float-out followed interior fittings. The launching featured the traditional “coin ceremony”, consisting in welding a silver coin on the ship's top deck. Godmother of the launching ceremony was Clementina Zecchin (Fincantieri employee). The ceremony was attended by Richard Morse (Carnival's Senior VP Hotel Operations), Fabrizio Timossi (Carnival's Project Manager) and Antonio Quintano (Marghera yard's Director).

On March 2, 2018, was announced the name of the liner's Godmother - Queen Latifah (US rapper, songwriter, singer, TV and film actress, producer, author, entrepreneur). During the christening ceremony  (May 23, 2018, held in NYC New York ) she participated in a special “Lip Sync Battle: Horizon” onboard show. The event was invitation-only, with an overnight stay on the ship and gala dinner.

On March 28, 2018, the vessel was officially delivered to Carnival Corporation by Fincantieri. The ceremony was attended by Micky Arison (Carnival Corporation's Chairman), Christine Duffy (Carnival Cruise Lines President), Giampiero Massolo (Fincantieri's Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri's CEO). Upon the ship's delivery, Fincantieri had built 81 cruise vessels (1990-2018), of which 64 for Carnival Corporation.

The liner's first Captain was Luigi de Angelis, with 22-year of service with the company (starting as a deck cadet in 1995 on Carnival Imagination ). Ship's Hotel Director is Pierre Camilleri.

In 2021-2022 (Dec 22 thru Jan 8) Carnival Horizon was emergency drydocked in Italy (at Fincantieri's Palermo shipyard) due to propulsion system issues. The drydocking was also used for changing the ship's old livery (white) with CCL fleet's new livery (red-white-blue). Horizon restarted operations on January 22 (2022), out of PortMiami .

Carnival Cruise #41 onboard the Carnival Horizon is in the books!

It’s been another amazing week onboard the Carnival Horizon! An 8-day Southern Caribbean cruise to Aruba, Bonaire, La Romana and Amber Cove was just what we both needed with how busy work has been over the past couple of months.

We had so much fun exploring the ship and visiting all of the exotic and beautiful ports. This is my third time on the Carnival Horizon and I’ve definitely found my favorite spots onboard. But what absolutely made cruise #41 special: the people! We interacted with so many amazing crewmembers this sailing and wanted to do some #CrewShoutouts here on the page.

From right when we boarded, we knew we were at home. Victoria greeted us at Tides Pool Bar. At first she didn’t recognize me, but then, a double take, her eyes grew big and she got the biggest smile as she came out from behind the bar to give me the biggest hug. We love our crew and it’s always special when they recognize us across sailings.

In addition to Victoria taking care of us, Glad in the Lobby Bar remembered both our names and our order every time we arrived. We also spent many hours with Alejandro and Bojan at Alchemy Bar – a Carnival Cruise Line favorite! While all of the drinks at Alchemy are special in their own way, we mostly enjoyed the “Alejandro” – a custom pink creation with a delicious sugar rim that he created for us. Thank you for making the cruise so special Alchemy crew!!

Of course, with Carnival’s CHEERS! Beverage Program , we needed our daily dose of caffeine. Darunee and Wanpen took care of us as Java Blue. “Mark is iced, whip, Rocky is hot and not!” Darunee would muse when we would show up to place our orders. Thank you for being truly amazing every day; no matter how tired we looked, you made it a point to brighten our day.

Entertainment

What a crew! This Playlist cast has clearly come together and formed a family unit – which is especially impressive considering half of the cast are on their first contract! For anyone that follows us, you know we never miss a show – and that held true this sailing. We started off with Welcome Aboard where we recognized Mel from the Sunrise! She was so kind and gave us a big hug and posed for several selfies. While she’s grown from her “Mel’ionairre” branding to the more evolved “Mel,” she’s the same amazing human being we came to love on the Sunrise. Welcoming us to the theater every night, collecting glasses during Vintage Pop, and hosting events across the ship… give this gal a raise as she’s simply fantastic!

But, back to the Playlist cast… Wow. Just truly fantastic. With one of the lead female singers recovering from an injury, this cast made all sorts of adjustments to the performances this week – and they all worked! Seeing a male sing several of the female parts in Celestial Strings was really cool, and speaks to the range that lead Delcan has. Impressive, for sure.

We spent time with the cast at a Playlist Q&A where we learned about their backgrounds, favorite shows, and more. Where we got to really interact, however, was sharing drinks at Alchemy Bar. We learned about their contracts and challenges, and shared a lot of laughs (only a couple at Harvey’s expense!) The cast is truly fantastic. I’m excited that I had the chance to sail before with Steph on Carnival Vista. She’s phenomenal and we’re so happy she keeps on dancing! Chante was on the Sunrise – we JUST missed her! – but that didn’t matter, she treated us as though we had sailed with her a hundred times. Carl, Tess, Deangelo, Cody, Nayia, Errel, Harvey… gosh, we just love and appreciate them all. The last showing of Celestial Strings received such a positive response that Errel became emotional on stage and broke down. Talk about a tearjerker/special moment for all of us in that theater. Thank you to the entire crew for making our cruise.

And when we weren’t enjoying some amazing shows, we were trying our hand at trivia! Thank you Cornel for all of the smiles – and for putting the FUN in Fun Squad! And thank you to Gina for always wearing the biggest smile – whether thanking us for coming to the show, or welcoming us back from our port of call. You always brought out the smiles in everyone!

But, of course, we know Playlist and all of the great entertainment onboard wouldn’t be possible without a fantastic Entertainment Director. Milena spent time with us on another night at Alchemy where she shared her background and experience with Carnival. She also gave us some “hints” to some exciting things to expect with the Costa by Carnival ships (of course, she only could share things that wouldn’t get her in trouble!)

And Melena’s right hand person that brings all of the cruise to life is the Cruise Director! Cookie is an instant favorite of ours – his positivity throughout the entire cruise just warms the heart. We chatted with Cookie on multiple occasions where we learned all about his experience with Carnival and his journey. If you ever get the chance to sail with this wonderful human being: DO IT. You will not be disappointed.

We asked if one of our other favorite Cruise Directors (MarQ) was a mentee/mentor, and he literally video-called him on the spot to say hello. While MarQ didn’t answer, Cookie did find us to show us the message he later received from MarQ, “Mark and Rocky!!!! Love them” – what a special moment that just demonstrates how out-of-the-way Cookie goes to make EVERY cruisers experience special.

For anyone that follows us, you know we LOVE to enjoy the food on a cruise ship. It’s what originally sparked my love of sailing. I’ll talk about the food in a little bit; for now, I’ll focus on the amazing dining staff we’ve had this cruise! Our Main Dining Room server Randolf was great. Always calling us by preferred name and making sure our food was brought out as quickly as it could so we could make the shows. He also made sure we made the most out of the CHEERS! beverage program by ensuring we never went thirsty. Bestari at Ji Ji’s was one of the best servers we’ve had in a specialty dining restaurant. Every time she saw us, she made us feel like old friends. Once, we ran into her on Deck 4 and she screamed and acknowledged us by name! (We overheard her coworkers ask her, “But why did you scream so much?” and she responded that she was just so excited to see us outside of the restaurant. How sweet!) Melony at Ji Ji’s was very welcoming and ensured Rocky’s first time for lunch was a pleasant one.

Even Better If…

While it’s been a truly amazing cruise, there were a couple things that could have been better. While the specialty restaurants (Ji Ji’s and Bonsai) were truly amazing – some of the best food we’ve ever had on a ship – the main dining room quality is suffering. The meals were ok each evening, but not great. When I asked Rocky what he wanted to do after brunch on the Final Sea Day, he responded, “Get food?” LOL

One thing I’ve commented on before is consistency/uniformity of food and that’s another thing that missed the mark this time around. Our Guy’s Burger Funderstruck nacho burger looked and tasted nothing like the original one we fell in love with on the Carnival Splendor in July.

The room servicing has also really suffered post-pandemic. While Pong Pong was fantastic, you can tell that he is stretched thin. Gone is the “would you like morning or evening service?” instead, it was simply, “These are my hours and I’ll clean your room somewhere between there.” The increased number of rooms that need to be served also leads to rushing and a LOT of noise cleaning as doors slam, vacuums bang into every possible surface/wall, and constant running back and forth. We appreciate our room stewards more today than ever, however, it’s not the Carnival experience cruisers have appreciated for years.

Finally, and this has always been a known issue, but when back-on-board time falls between mealtimes, it creates a lot of frustrated passengers. While we are prepared for a wait when we get back on at 4:30, it’s clear that other passengers are not expecting the queues. Having spent the day in the heat, drinking, and not eating… you’ve created a recipe for cranky passengers. A group of people left the Deli line and headed to Guy’s Burger Joint which had dual queues going – but were still backed up all along Lido.

Final Thoughts

As I always say… if things like minor inconveniences ruin a vacation, stay home! I’m joking of course. I don’t want to downplay the impact that some of these things could have on a first-time or new-to-Carnival cruiser, however, when put in perspective, you simply cannot find a better vacation for the money. I’d also argue that you won’t find a better crew out there than those we’ve met and had the chance to befriend through Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival Cruise ship catches fire after possible lightning strike

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Carnival Freedom ship caught fire Saturday near the Bahamas after passengers reported a lightning strike on the boat during a thunderstorm .

Carnival Cruise Line said the crew reported a fire on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, sailing to Freeport after being unable to dock at Princess Cay due to weather conditions. 

"Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire," Carnival Cruise Line said. "While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport on Sunday."

Around the time of the fire, radar showed a storm cell over the area and a lot of lightning activity.

Multiple passenger videos show flames and dark smoke billowing from the exhaust funnel as rain continues to pour onto the deck.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was supposed to dock at Princess Cay on Saturday about 9 a.m., but passengers were told that the boat would continue to Freeport due to strong winds . 

During the afternoon, the rain returned, and passengers reported hearing loud thunder and then seeing the smoke. Soon after, guests were told to remain in their cabins.

"Why is our tail on fire?" someone can be heard saying in the video recorded by Barnes. "That's not good, y'all."

On Monday, Carnival Freedom returned to Port Canaveral , where guests disembarked.

The cruise line said damage to the ship is "more than we first thought" and will require immediate repair to stabilize the funnel. Cruises scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on March 25th and March 29th have been canceled. All guests on the canceled trips will receive a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit.

FOX Business reported that the same cruise ship caught on fire in 2022 after being struck by lightning. 

Another video recorded on Saturday by X user @breezebreeze showed the fire on the ship.

"Carnival Freedom on fire AGAIN!!" they wrote on X.
