Class of 2023: FWT Roster Announced

classement freeride world tour 2023

The World's Best Freeriders are Returning to the Big Stage!

  • 43 athletes will compete in the FWT23
  • Wildcards to be announced in the upcoming weeks
  • Previous FWT athletes have qualified through the challenger series

FWT23 consists of five events and 43 riders, but these are merely numbers. This world-class spectacle would not be possible without the total commitment of the world’s best freeriders, ready to drop no matter the physical pain or mental pressure. Ready to drop regardless of the conditions Mother Nature dishes up on the day. Ready to drop to satisfy the seemingly unquenchable thirst of their audience, who feed off the next big trick or near-impossible line. For the past 16 years, each roster has brought the FWT to life, and this year’s list promises to do the same…

World Champion Jessica Hotter – who was also recently nominated as the best female athlete in New Zealand – is back to defend her title, with eight others hot on her heels to take the crown. Whispers of the three-time FWT runner-up Hedvig Wessel returning to the action are also circulating. She is focussing on new projects, but could be back for an event wildcard.

The battles are always intense in the ski men category, and World Champion Maxime Chabloz will have to fight off a talent-packed field – including the likes of Carl Regnér and Max Palm – to be crowned again. Newcomer Max Hitzig, who won last year’s FWT Fieberbrunn event, is hungry for more podium finishes, as is the unyielding Mayor of Stomptown, Reine Barkered, returning as an injury wildcard.

classement freeride world tour 2023

  • Snowboard Men

The Sultan of Steez, Blake Moller, will have his hands full trying to defend his title, with no shortage of new talent and seasoned legends in the mix. Watch out for Camille Armand – who is hungry to go one better than last year – as well as rookies Liam Rivera, Holden Samuels, and former FWT athlete Jonathan Penfield.

  • Snowboard Women

Can Tiphanie Perrotin hold off a strong contingent and double down after winning the FWT in her rookie year? She will have to hold off FWT22 Runner-Up Erika Vikander and the ever-impressive Manuela Mandl, who won Xtreme Verbier last year. Katie Anderson and Anna Orlova have also requalified, rounding out an extremely impressive female snowboard roster.

Freeride World Tour 2023 Calendar – The World’s Best Freeriders Return to The Big Stage

Mountainwatch | Press Release

Pully, Switzerland, October 5 : The Freeride World Tour is proud to announce the calendar for 2023, featuring awe-inspiring freeride destinations around the globe. The world’s best athletes return for the 16th version of this iconic series, ready to push the limits of what’s possible in the high mountains in their quest for the sport’s ultimate prize.

This year’s schedule boasts five stops in five different countries, with two finals events and a two-run format in Fieberbrunn, where riders’ top score will count towards their result. To up the pressure even more, and to reward those with the nerves – and legs – of steel, 12,500 points for first place (instead of 10,000) will again be up for grabs in the FWT finals events. Who can tame Verbier’s Bec des Rosses and Fieberbrunn’s Wildseeloder to maximise their chance of being crowned the champ? Time will tell.

Ordino Arcalís, Andorra: February 4-9, 2023

The third stop of FWT23 heads to Ordino Arcalís, where athletes will have one last chance to rack up the points before the cut. This venue has become a permanent fixture on tour, and for a good reason, with playful terrain offering opportunities for creative freeride lines.

2023 Freeride World Tour to Kick Off in Spain Despite Sketchy Conditions

Despite warmer-than-average European winter conditions throughout December and early January, the Freeride World Tour is planning to move ahead with the first stop of its competition series in Baqueira-Beret, Spain. The competition has now been confirmed for Sunday, Jan. 29.

Like many European resorts this winter, Baqueira-Beret , which sits in the Pyrennees, has suffered from historic warm temperatures and low snowfall. On Saturday, Jan. 7, Baqueira-Beret reported a base of 15 inches—considerably below average. Low snow totals are even more concerning in the world of freeride skiing competitons, which rely on natural mountain faces rather than groomed courses.

“It’s true, the winter was warm and dry since December after some good early snowfalls,” says Nicolas Hale-Woods, FWT founder and chief executive officer.

Relate: The FWT joins the network of FIS sponsored events

However, starting two weeks ago, snow began to fall in this region in Spain. Now, the resort has a 51-inch base—enough snow to make a competition happen.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Baqueira Beret (@baqueira_beret)

“The good news is that there was a massive change in the weather pattern,” says Hale-Woods. “It could be an epic day, or it could be more challenging, depending on how the weather and safety conditions are.”

The planned venue at Baqueira-Beret is a 1,200-foot face called the Baciver. To monitor the Baciver’s conditions, Hale-Woods has relied on a mountain guide, the FWT commissioner, and reports from local FWT competitor Aymar Navarro .

Baqueira Beret FWT venue

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Navarro posted an Instagram story urging those skiing at Baqueira-Beret to stay off the competition. This is standard practice for freeride competitions—organizers typically restrict public access to competition venues weeks before the event to preserve snow quality.

“I would like to ask you that during the next days, the Baciver face be respected since it is option A for the competition,” wrote Navarro, “I know it has been a very dry season and that we are all crazily wanting to catch powder, but I trust in all of you that for a few days will be able to contain our desire and respect [the temporary closure of the Baciver].”

FWT competitor Aymar Nevarro

While Europe’s lack of snow has placed unique pressure on FWT organizers, running a freeride competition isn’t unlike juggling chainsaws, even in normal conditions. Low visibility, sudden warming, and high-avalanche risk can derail a competition before it starts. Earlier this season, the FWT had to reschedule its event in Kicking Horse, B.C. , due to “unsafe” conditions.

Hale-Woods notes that the FWT has several contingency plans should conditions at Baqueira-Beret worsen in the coming weeks.

Watch: 2023 FWT Stop 1 – Baqueira Beret

“We’ve had different scenarios like pulling the event, canceling the event, and replacing the event in another resort,” he says. “That’s part of big mountain freeride event management. I’m not going to say we’re used to that, but yes, we’ve had to deal with that type of situation in the past seasons.”

With temperatures finally falling throughout Europe, the FWT’s prospects for the rest of the season look encouraging despite the touch-and-go situation at Baqueira-Beret—all of the remaining European venues are holding snow.

“In Austria and Switzerland, there is snow on both the Wildseeloder and the Bec de Rosses,” Hale-Woods says. “The Bec de Rosses was skied 14 days ago in the central couloir, which is pretty rare [this early in the season]… there are no particular concerns [with snow depth] at this stage.”

Weather changes aren’t the only hiccups the FWT manages every season. Injuries and other conflicts often sideline qualified riders. This season, rookies Manon Loschi and Dillion Flinders will not participate in the FWT due to injury. Leo Slemmet, a multi-year veteran of the FWT, is taking a season-long break from competing, citing interests in “other ventures.”

To account for the lost riders, the FWT has announced two new season-long wildcards— Oscar Mandin and Ralph Welponer . Mandin comes from a freeride-focused background, whereas Welponer previously competed in FIS slopestyle events.

Freeride World Tour 2023 Season Highlights

It's a wrap for the Freeride World Tour 2023, and what a season it's been!

From Kicking Horse to Fieberbrunn, we've got a round-up of the full video highlights and results of all stages and events below.

For those of you not in the know, the Freeride World Tour (FWT) is the iconic worldwide circuit of freeride skiing and snowboarding with the best riders in the world competing on the most legendary alpine faces at the most renowned ski resorts across the world.

Quiz time : Did you notice anything familiar at the FWT?

This year, FATMAP was stoked to be the FWT's official mapping partner, with our maps being used across the board at the events and on the livestream!

FWT23_DDAHER_BAQUEIRA_6312.jpg

Baqueira Beret Pro | 28 January - 2 February

The first stop of the FWT took place in the Pyrenees of Catalonia, in Spain, at Baqueira Beret. Check out the notoriously dicey face, the Tuc de Baciver , on FATMAP - where the event was held.

A freshly sprinkled blanket of snow beautifully set up the event at Baqueira Beret, even if it didn’t reach the same levels of snowpack as 2022. With lots of available features for the competitors to fly off or get caught up on, this is a particularly exciting venue.

However, the freeriders performed brilliantly, as can be seen with the four winners below:

Ski women: Addison Rafford 🇺🇸

Ski men: Max Palm 🇸🇪

Snowboard women: Katie Anderson 🇨🇦

Snowboard men: Michael Mawn 🇺🇸

Take a look at Baqueira Beret's snowboard winner, Katie Anderson, doing what she does best below - making the most of the mountains:

classement freeride world tour 2023

Ordino Arcalís | 2 - 9 February

The second stop of the FWT took place in Andorra at Ordino Arcalís, just four days after Spain.

This stop included sun baked snow and lots of pumping adrenaline. The combination of an average snow pack and warm temperatures could have meant a mediocre competition - but it was nothing of the sort. The athletes put on one heck of a show.

See the Pic de l’Albeille face on FATMAP, where the competition took place. It’s known for its steep pitch, shallow snow pack, and enough features of keep you on your toes - or flying off them. It offers a variety of lines for riders and skiers to choose, and that’s exactly what was displayed back in February.

Ski women: Justine Dufour-Lapointe 🇨🇦

Ski men: Valentin Rainer 🇦🇹

Snowboard men: Ludovic Guillot-Diat 🇫🇷

Take a look below at the winner of the men's ski, Valentin Rainer, going down his winning line in Ordino Arcalís :

Kicking Horse Golden, BC | 17 - 22 February

The third stop was at Kicking Horse Golden in British Columbia, Canada - and what an event! The event’s time frame welcomed a blanket of fresh snow and blue skies, which only helped boost the athletes’ moods and rides.

The extended highlights reel (below) is well worth a watch as it shows a ton of “see it to believe it” action. Just take a peek at the Kicking Horse face here to be impressed.

Ski women: Megane Betend 🇫🇷

Ski men: Matt Hitzig 🇩🇪

Snowboard women: Michaela Davis-Meehan 🇦🇺

Snowboard men: Liam Rivera 🇲🇽

Watch the highlights of Kicking Horse Golden below and be prepared for your jaw to drop!

Fieberbrunn Pro | 11 - 17 March

A 48-hour weather delay pushed the fourth stop of the 2023 FWT back, but on Thursday 16 March, the blue skies opened up and the event at Fieberbrunn in Austria was given the green light!

A monumental coat of fresh snow on the Wildseeloder face , where the event took place, offered a picture perfect location for the competition. But that’s not to mean there were no challenges, as snow conditions varied around the face.

Ski women: Arriana Tricomi 🇮🇹

Ski men: Andrew Pollard 🇺🇸

Snowboard men: Jonathan Penfield 🇺🇸

Catch all the highlights of Fieberbrunn Pro below - it's worth it!

Yeti Xtreme Verbier | 25 March - 2 April

The 2023 FWT came to a close in Verbier, Switzerland, as its fifth and final stop of the tour was cancelled. Ongoing heavy snowfall and strong wind gusts up to 135 km/h made the conditions extremely hazardous on the Bec des Rosses face , and the venue was deemed unsafe for riding.

After all, safety is always the first priority.

Four new FWT world champions are crowned!

The Freeride World Tour Announces Schedule for 2023 Season

The Inertia

Now in its 16th year, the Freeride World Tour is gearing up for another season of shred. The tour pits the world’s best freeride ski and snowboard athletes against one another in some of the toughest terrain in the world. Last year, with the “unusual” snow season that we experienced, the tour saw gnarly conditions as well as gnarly terrain, leading to some insane wipeouts . Fingers crossed for a more powder-filled season this year.

2023 FWT Schedule

Kicking Horse, Golden BC, Canada: January 13-18, 2023

Baqueira Beret, Spain: January 28 – February 2, 2023

Ordino Arcalís, Andorra: February 4-9, 2023

After the first three events, part of the tour will be cut heading into the two-event finals. Athletes will qualify for the finals based off of results from two out of the first three events.

2023 freeride world tour calendar announced.

The Freeride World Tour (FWT) is proud to announce its calendar for 2023, featuring awe-inspiring freeride destinations around the globe. The world’s best athletes are set to return for the 16th version of this iconic series, ready to push the limits of what’s possible in the high mountains in their quest for the sport’s ultimate prize.

This year’s schedule boasts five stops in five different countries, with two finals events and a two-run format in Fieberbrunn, Austria, where riders’ top score will count towards their result. To up the pressure even more, and to reward those with the nerves—and legs—of steel, 12,500 points for first place (instead of 10,000) will again be up for grabs in the FWT finals events. Who can tame Fieberbrunn’s Wildseeloder and Verbier’s Bec des Rosses to maximize their chance of being crowned the champ? Time will tell. Until then, let’s check out the world-class venues on offer for the 2023 FWT...

Kicking Horse, Golden, B.C., Canada: January 13th - 18th Known for its champagne powder and long, steep runs, it’s no wonder Kicking Horse attracts riders from all over the globe. The world’s best will have to shake off any early-season nerves and be on point from the very first turn, as these mountains dish up some classic freeride terrain that is unforgiving for the unprepared.

Baqueira Beret, Spain: January 28th - February 2nd After leaving the scenic Rocky Mountains, the Tour heads across the pond for the European leg. Baqueira Beret will again play host, following the success of last year’s inaugural event at this epic venue. Consistent snowfall and varied terrain make this world-class resort an ideal test for freeride fanatics.

Ordino Arcalís, Andorra: February 4th - 9th The third stop of FWT heads to Ordino Arcalís, where athletes will have one last chance to rack up the points before the cut. This venue has become a permanent fixture on tour, and for a good reason, with playful terrain offering opportunities for creative freeride lines.

The Cut will follow stop three to set up the FWT Finals. Athletes can qualify using results from two out of the first three events.

Fieberbrunn, Austria: March 11th - 17th The first finals event heads to Fieberbrunn, where athletes must navigate the glorious—yet intimidating—Wildseeloder.
