BMW Cruise electric bike – first look

New e-bike has a claimed range of 70km

cruise e bike bmw

German car manufacturers BMW are poised to enter the exploding European electric bike market with their own model – the Cruise e-bike.

The company have released details of the 20kg (44lb) bike, which will have pedal assist capable of 25kmh and a maximum range of 85km. The bike's lithium ion battery is mounted on the down tube, and the 250W Bosch motor under the bottom bracket, meaning it should have a very low centre of gravity.

The bike has disc brakes and four modes of assistance, ranging from eco to turbo, reports the website technologicvehicles.com . A detachable computer will show speed, battery life and other parameters.

The bike also contains torque sensors, which note when the rider is delivering extra effort on hills and can contribute more power to maintain speed.

However, BMW are dipping a toe in the water rather than jumping head first into the market. They will only release 1,000 bikes for sale in Germany, where the popularity of electric bikes is increasing rapidly. According to a study co-authored by the Association of the European Bicycle Industry, sales of e-bikes in Germany rose 55 percent between 2011 and 2012.

The Cruise e-bike is not BMW’s first foray into the field, either. At the 2012 London Olympics, the car makers circulated 200 lightweight i Pedelec Concept folding bikes to athletes and organisers.

BMW haven’t yet given a release date or price for the Cruise e-bike.

BMW Cruise e-Bike — BMW Of North America Launches New e-Bike For $3,430

BMW has now launched the BMW Cruise e-Bike line, available for $3,430, in North America.

The new line of e-bikes — all featuring BOSCH Performance Line electric motors — includes the “lightweight, quick BMW Cruise Bike for the casual rider in urban environments; the sporty, stylish, and dynamic BMW M Cruise Bike for the M enthusiast; as well as the BMW Junior Cruise Bike and the BMW Kids Bike, for younger BMW fans.”

bmw-cruise-e-bike

The removable battery used in the BMW Cruise e-Bike — which can provide “optimal pedal support at speeds of up to 15 mph” — can be recharged on the bike or after being removed. It only takes around 3½ hours to completely recharge using a standard outlet, and only around 1½ hours to recharge to 50%.

The e-bike model features a bull-neck frame made of hydroformed aluminium developed in-house by BMW.

The Accessory and Lifestyle Manager at BMW North America, Eric Riehle, commented : “BMW aims to be the leading provider of premium mobility services, and our bicycle collection furthers that mission. As we enter the holiday season, these bikes make the perfect present for those wishing for their first BMW.”

The BMW branding will probably ensure decent enough sales, in spite of the relatively high pricing. Considering that a decent used car can be had for the same price, though, I wouldn’t expect many people other than enthusiasts to consider the model.

As far as used electric vehicles go, for those with an “environmental” slant to them, you can often find good-quality used Nissan Leafs for under $10,000 at this point. That’s only 2½ times the price of the BMW Cruise e-Bike — for a product with a great deal more utility.

Test: With the "eDrive" logo and mother-of-pearl vehicle paint, the BMW wheel seeks to be close to the blue-white electric cars. As far as performance is concerned, it offers typical Bosch performance fare: the motor pushes hard, albeit a bit more subdued than on other bikes. The braking system is not too aggressive; The rather hard rear of the vehicle stands in the way of the well-responsive suspension fork with locking function. If you drive the wide tires with less pressure, you can tease out some comfort. The sporty saddle is comfortable, the straight handlebars on the adjustable stem are ergonomically unfavorable. The attachment of the rear light is in need of improvement; the plug-in mudguards, which are close to the tire, could only be attached without rattling with additional cable ties.

BMW Cruise e-Bike 2014

cruise e bike bmw

  • In addition to the standard bike pedals, the Cruise e-Bike adds a 250W Bosch electric motor (it's a BMW, so of course it has Bosch parts) that puts out 48 Newton meters of torque (35.4 pound-feet) to assist you when your legs are moving. This part is important, since the e-Bike, technically something called a "pedelec," does not offer up any momentum if your feet stop. If it did, then the e-Bike would be considered a scooter in some jurisdictions, and that means you would need a license and/or a helmet. The Cruise e-Bike is just a bike, but one that's easier to use.
  • I've been a practical biker for years, riding for transportation and fun when I've lived in cities and even in a rural home seven miles from the nearest town. I've ridden 70+ miles in a day many times, but I've never been on electric bike . It's an odd sensation, to be sure, the first few miles, but I quickly got used to the way the bike is there to assist you. The motor provides assistance to match the power of your legs, anywhere between zero and 225 percent, depending on the mode. BMW says there are three sensors taking measurements 1,000 times a second. It certainly responded near-instantly to my pressure, which did take some getting used to. You know that feeling when you start pedaling on a bike? How it takes a second to overcome inertia and get moving? That doesn't happen with the Cruise e-Bike.
  • Electrical power comes from the 400-Wh battery (also by Bosch) that BMW says is good for "around 100 km" (62 miles). We're not sure how that's measured, given that you have to be pedaling the whole time, but let's just say that if you're going about your daily business, you'll always have enough charge. The battery is locked to the frame , but you can remove it with a key to take it in and recharge it, a process that takes 90 minutes for the first 50 percent and then another two hours (so, 3.5 hours all told) to get to 100 percent (all on European outlets of course, which is where the bike is sold).
  • The 22-kilogram (48.5-pound) bike is solid, and somewhat heavy and difficult to maneuver when you're not sitting astride it. The thick black and white frame certainly looked better than the standard city commuter bikes that are all around this town and the fenders kept some of the wetness off of our person. The BMW logo is present at the top of the front fork but also on the included bike lock .
  • There are no hills to speak of in Amsterdam, so we couldn't much test out the 6-kph boost the system is capable of providing up slopes (going up bridges was all we could find for non-horizontal surfaces). The city is also so bike friendly that there are barely any curbs to speak of, so the suspension fork with 75 mm of spring travel didn't get a huge workout. On the cobblestones, the e-Bike felt as smooth as one can expect. Maybe a bit smoother.
  • Other technical features include front and rear disc brakes , front and rear lights powered by a hub dynamo and a handlebar-mounted computer that doesn't just display useful things like speed and distance but also controls the bike's various modes. There are five settings: off, eco, tour, sport and turbo. Off made the bike feel like it was dragging (whether from increased friction from regenerative braking or because I was just so used to the electric assist), and eco and tour modes did not provide all that much assistance. Sport was good, but since I didn't care much about depleting range - the pack said 45 km when I left the hotel (climbing to 47 as I pedaled before starting to drop down - I soon realized that anything other than turbo wasn't really worth it. Turbo is the most spritely, which means it is way more fun than the other modes, once you're used to the pep. The everyday bike commuters we blew past on the bike paths didn't know what hit them.
  • So, that's the good news, but there's bad as well. Namely, the fact that the BMW Cruise e-Bike 2014 costs 2,799 euros. Which is $3,785 US and totally bonkers for a city bike that I'd worry would get stolen every time I took it out. Oh, well, at least I got to ride it for one afternoon.

Home » BMW Urban Hybrid E-Bike – Review and Ride Impressions

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to the transportation industry. While car sales continue to grow, other industries have been less fortunate. Public transportation and ride sharing have seen the largest decline, with most people practicing the recommended social distancing.

But it’s the bike industry that emerged as a “winner” in these difficult times.  And especially, the e-bike segment. According to several studies, we’re seeing a national biking boom. Electric bike sales were up 84 percent in March, 92 percent in April, and 137 percent in May in the United States. But the same trend can be seen across the globe.

It is certainly true that e-biking cannot cure the COVID-19 disease, or stop the current pandemic, but it helps with our fitness levels while allowing for green living. In some cases, they may even allow for faster commutes. So owning an e-bike seems to be a no-brainer in 2020.

But to test the viability of an e-bike, we reached out to BMW of North America to sample one of their two available electric bicycles.

Meet The BMW Urban Hybrid E-Bike

cruise e bike bmw

At $2,330 , the BMW Urban E-Bike is the cheaper of the two. The BMW Active Hybrid E-Bike rings in at $3,260 but it comes with a larger battery pack and a few other whistles and bells. Compared to the more expensive Active E-Bike, the Urban version features a more minimal design with a slender frame design which is ideal for daily city commuting.

The matte black frame comes in three sizes: S, M and L. The sleek frame also houses a 300 Watt-Hour rechargeable battery pack. As you’d expect, the battery pack adds some weight to the e-bike which tips the scale at 18.5 kg or 40.7 lbs. Not the lightest in the segment, nor the heaviest.

The build quality of the frame is fantastic while the minimalistic design doesn’t show off. It’s also quite sturdy, even when you ride over potholes or even gravel. While BMW positions their hybrid e-bikes as urban bikes, they can easily ride on light gravel as well.

cruise e bike bmw

The rigid touring fork is made by Suntour while the handlebar is flat, typical to a city bike. The sleek handlebar makes use of two sporty handles which are extremely grippy even with sweaty palms. The fork and handlebar allows for effortless steering, and it’s quite comfortable even during long distances.

Speaking of comfort, the saddle is made by Selle Royal which was specifically designed for the E-Bikes. The comfort is comparable to the more expensive saddles. During longer stretches of riding, I made sure to use some bike shorts with padding to prevent chafing. The saddle and the seatpost are integrated, so it’s easy to adjust the height with a seat clamp lever.

The electric motor is integrated in the rear hub which also houses a Deore/Shimano XT 10 gears derailleur. While riding in the city, I found the cassette to be adequate for urban riding, even when attempting to ride at higher speeds.

cruise e bike bmw

Can Never Go Wrong With Some Great Brakes

For the stopping power, the BMW Urban E-Bike uses the Shimano 180 mm hydraulic disc brakes. If you’ve ridden with hydraulic disc brakes, then you’d immediately appreciate their bite and effectiveness. They make the ride significantly safer with very little maintenance needed.

The e-bike came equipped with the Rody Airline 4 Plus wheels in 28 inch sizes wrapped in Continental Contact cruiser tires. They slim tires allow for low rolling resistance, so you can easily travel at fairly high speeds, even without the electric assist. Of course, if you’d like to ride more on gravel-covered surfaces, then a new set of tires might be needed.

cruise e bike bmw

I also particularly liked the pedals. I wear a size 13 shoe, but they had enough surface to accommodate my Yeti feet. I also found them to be quite grippy, thanks to the generously-sized pins sticking out of the flat surface. Clipless pedals are great for road bikes, but I don’t see a need for them on an urban e-bike. Yet, you can always replace the standard pedals.

Effortless Charging

BMW has also made sure that charging their e-bike is as easy as it can get. You basically have two options to charge the frame-integrated battery. You can either connect the power supply directly to the bike, or you can remove the battery pack and use the bridge adaptor supplied to charge the battery.

cruise e bike bmw

The current battery charge is shown on the LCD display unit installed on the handlebar or through the LED lights on the battery pack. But in typical BMW fashion, they’ve added another cool feature to get an idea of the battery charge. The BMW roundel installed on the frame lights up to indicate the charge. It can be either red glowing (less than 5 percent), orange (larger than 5 percent but less than 10) and blue.

In my experience, it took about an hour to charge the battery pack from empty. Of course you might wonder what the electric range is. And just like with electric cars, it can widely vary. The range on e-bike is affected by many factors such as: assist level, tires and tires pressure, routes, weathers, weight and battery degradation.

The Ride Experience

cruise e bike bmw

During my time with the BMW Urban e-bike, I adjusted my riding style several times. If I was planning a longer router (20-30 miles), then I would start the ride with the assist mode set to 0 percent. Now, the e-bike handles just like a “normal” bike would. The gear changing is smooth and the e-bike can easily get to high speeds within seconds.

There are five assistance levels on the BMW e-bike. We’ve already mentioned the 0 percent level. The next level up is 30 percent which corresponds to the ECO mode on electric cars. Next up is the 50 percent mode, the COMFORT mode – a compromise between assistance and range.

cruise e bike bmw

Moving up and we have the 50 percent – or the SPORT mode ideal for riding uphill. The BOOST mode comes in at 100 percent with the full power of the electric motor. None of the modes operate past the 25 km/h mark  (15.5 mph).

As I mentioned earlier, planning your route can help you determine which modes to use. I’ve enjoyed pedaling most of the time, but I always reserved some electric energy for the last few miles home when fatigue kicks in.

cruise e bike bmw

The BOOST mode is quite fun, especially when you take off at stop lights with everyone admiring “your fitness levels.” I also found it to be extremely beneficial during those few times where I encountered a hill in the fairly flat areas surrounding Chicago.

But I would see myself mostly riding in the 30 percent mode which gives me enough power to sprint during longer stretches of free roads, or when riding from standstill.

The geometry of the bike is also something I was fond of. For size L, the top tube length is 600 mm while the seat tube length is 540 mm. The wheelbase measures 1099 mm with a 70 degree head tube angle. So all these numbers translate into a comfortable and upright riding position. For reference, I measure 6″3 in height, or around 1.90 meters.

cruise e bike bmw

I’m certainly more used to riding road and gravel bikes with drop bars, but for city commutes, the flat bars make more sense. They’re also not too wide, so you shouldn’t have an issue getting close to cars next to you. The BMW Urban Hybrid e-bike also came with drilled holes in the frame which allows you to add other accessories, like water bottle cages or bags.

There are no mudguards installed from the factory, but based on the tire clearance, you should be able to install your own, if needed. In the end, it might save you during those rainy days.

The e-bike Can Complement Your Car

cruise e bike bmw

In most cases, I don’t see the BMW Urban Hybrid e-bike as a replacement for your car. While they’re a lot of fun and healthy for you, bikes can’t still fully replace a car. But they can certainly complement them. For example, I often found myself hoping on the e-bike for a trip to the local grocery store ( 2 miles away), rather than using BMW i3.

They’re both electric and certainly eco-friendly, but the e-bike is more rewarding as far as my well-being. Furthermore, I truly enjoyed exploring Chicago neighborhoods while riding versus behind the wheel. It’s funny how many things you can overlook when you’re in a car.

If you own a spacious car or have a bike rack installed, you can certainly take the e-bike with you for a day out in the nature. There are plenty of paved bike trails surrounding Chicago where you can get lost riding for hours. And this is where the hybrid nature of the bike will come in handy.

In conclusion, there is always a silver lining. And for me that was the newly rediscovered passion of riding a bike during those difficult and unique times.

BMW unveils high-speed electric bicycle with 300 km of range, plus an electric motorcycle

Avatar for Micah Toll

BMW has taken to the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Germany , to unveil two new electric motorbikes with interesting specs for their categories. Both have the same performance figures, making for a high-speed electric bicycle and a low-speed electric motorbike.

The two models were technically unveiled by different divisions of BMW.

BMW unveiled the i Vision AMBY, which is a high-speed electric bicycle.

The company’s motorcycle division, BMW Motorrad, unveiled the Vision AMBY. That little “i” makes a big difference.

The i Vision AMBY may technically fall in the electric bicycle category, but it shares very little with its e-bike brethren. The frame uses similar suspension components to other high-end bicycles and what appears to be a Gates carbon belt drive, but the electronics appear to be entirely custom.

A higher-power motor and gigantic 2,000 Wh battery enable it to reach much higher speeds in its highest setting. That big battery also has BMW making lofty range claims of up to 300 km (186 miles) in its lowest power mode.

Using an accompanying smartphone app, riders can choose between the European legal 25 km/h (15.5 mph) speed, a second speed-pedelec mode that reaches 45 km/h (28 mph), and a new high-speed-pedelec mode that ups the ante to 60 km/h (37 mph). BMW even floated the idea of having those speeds be modifiable in real time based on geo-fencing, meaning you could be slowed down automatically when you hit the city center, then unleashed to your top speed once turning onto a larger road.

Don’t get too excited though – you’ll need to register the bike and get a special license plate to use it on public roads in anything other than the slowest mode.

This also isn’t an electric motorcycle in disguise. Those pedals are for more than show; they are required to power the motor. Without a hand throttle, riders will have to continue pedaling constantly to achieve and maintain the bike’s high speeds. The range rating also drops significantly to just 75 km (47 miles) when traveling at 60 km/h (37 mph).

The highest speed mode certainly doesn’t fit into any current legal designation for electric bicycles though.

BMW clarified further, saying:

“In the absence of any existing legal framework for a vehicle of this kind with a modular speed concept, the “AMBY” Vision Vehicles set out to prompt the introduction of such legislation and, by consequence, developments of this nature.”

The bike also features other interesting design elements, such as LED light bars integrated into the handlebars and seat post, as well as an angular frame with a highly tucked seating position.

On the other hand, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY electric motorcycle looks to be a much more leisurely ride.

Instead of a pair of pedals, the Vision AMBY swaps in more realistic motorcycle-style foot pegs.

Interestingly, the Vision AMBY e-motorcycle also hits the same top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph), which is rather slow compared to other entries in the light electric motorcycle class. Its lightweight design will have it more closely competing with small electric trail bikes like a Sur Ron Light Bee , albeit BMW’s presumably street-legal design would offer a significant advantage over off-road-only alternatives.

BMW Motorrad hasn’t shared any details yet about the motor or battery setup in the motorcycle version of the AMBY concept line, but it will surely pack at least as much capacity as the 2,000 Wh setup in the high-speed electric bicycle version.

cruise e bike bmw

Unlike the road-oriented BMW i Vision AMBY, the motorcycle variant looks like it is primarily designed for off-road riding. Wider tires and a more robust suspension system look trail-ready, though a license plate mount shows that road riding is still in the stars.

BMW Motorrad’s head of design Edgar Heinrich further discussed the light electric motorbike:

“The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY takes us into new territory. For us, the focus is on user behaviour – the question is: how will customers want to get around in the future? What will they expect their vehicle to be capable of? This was precisely the starting point of our deliberations. Our aim was to develop an extremely emotional vehicle for smart mobility in and around the city that offered maximum freedom. The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY really does enable our customers to experience urban life in a whole new way, cover distances more flexibly and “break free” of the city from time to time, too. At the same time, BMW Motorrad is consistently pursuing its electromobility strategy for urban conurbations. It’s a fascinating introduction to the world of BMW Motorrad that also promises maximum riding pleasure.”

BMW announces a new E-bike for 2014

BMW produced 200 small folding electric bikes in 2012 as part of a public relations campaign about their new electric concept car, the i3. You could fit two of the folding i-Pedelecs in the back of the i3 , with the idea that you could drive the i3 from your home to a car-park, and then ride the i-Pedelecs the final few miles to work, to the train station, or to a weekend picnic.

The BMW i-Pedelec folding E-bike, and the i3 electric concept car.

The i-Pedelec was well-designed, but it has never gone into mass-production. It had achieved its goal of green advertising, and served as an example of BMW’s design skill.

Last year, in 2013, they decided to brand a full-sized E-bike, but…in my opinion they chose a very generic looking frame, even though they did make the wise choice to use the well-designed Bosch mid-drive (which makes the most of the EUs 250W street E-bike power limit). The BMW 2013 “Cruise” E-bike was certainly made with quality components, but it was not distinctive in any way.

BMW History

I’d like to take a minute and talk a little about BMW’s incredible history. Their name is Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), and their blue-and white symbol holds a clue to their origin. The famous BMW “Roundel” is is a graphic of an airplane propeller spinning. In 1917 they had been making aircraft engines, but in the post-war economy, they began making motorcycle engines to survive the European economic depression.

The flat air-cooled twin shown below is from 1980, but it is an excellent example of the classic engine that made BMW world famous. This engine family started in 1923 and it was the one product that most helped them survive the economic ups and downs of the next few decades until the next big product diversification…

The famous "spinning propeller" logo, and a 1980 R/80.

The famous “spinning propeller” logo, and a 1980 R80/7.

Now, I’d like to show you the next two milestones in their history:  In 1955, BMW licensed the rights to manufacture the Brazilian “Isetta” microcar, which uses a motorcycle engine in the rear. Although it wasn’t impressive, the BMW Isetta was their first commitment to becoming a car manufacturer. Then, in 1962…The struggling company introduced a sport-coupe model that would evolve into the car that would catapult them into profitability, and also into the sport-luxury market that has become the core of their modern identity…the 2002 from 1968 ( two thousand cc engine displacement, two doors).

And now…to their new Ebike!

Dozens of bicycle manufacturers have contracted with Bosch to supply a mid drive motor to add an electric bicycle to their line-up. I think the full-sized E-bike that BMW produced last year was an experiment. However, I believe that their new E-bike this year is evidence that they are serious about keeping an E-bike as part of their catalog.

Their history has shown that they are a company of engineers that carefully considers their next move, and they then commit themselves to establishing themselves in that new market. Our article on car companies that branded an E-bike has shown that auto company branded E-bikes have come and gone. The 2013 BMW Cruise E-bike was well-designed and performs fantastic (in part to the excellent high-quality Bosch drive), however…the big difference this year is BMWs effort and expense that went into improving its style .

xxx

The Stromer hides it battery inside the downtube. However the Bosch drive unit is unmistakable, so the BMW chose a detachable battery case. I think this is good, because riders can upgrade to a larger battery for more range whenever they want. Also, replacing an old battery does not require returning the bike to the dealer. Notice all the cables are sleekly routed through the inside of the frame.

The Bosch mid drive is the focal point of this elegant frame.

xxx

The plus and minus buttons change the power-assist settings on the user-friendly computer.

xxx

The hydroformed aluminum tubing and smoothly blended welds add distinctive touches to this understated but very upscale E-bike

Here is a reason I believe BMW is serious about continuing to design and produce electric bikes…they have invested a serious amount of time, money, and effort into producing a very well-designed electric scooter . The easy method to making a scooter is to use a hub-motor , but BMW used a non-hub, which allows the motor to spin much faster than the wheel. It also simplifies their choice to liquid-cool the motor, so this design can absorb large temporary heat spikes. This design really cares about performance.

These things convince me that BMW is not just using a few E-bikes for their advertising, they are quite serious about this.
