On the Italian Riviera, a Different Life Awaits

On the Italian Riviera, a different life awaits. Learn about Il Gigante, Manarola, Aristide, Vernazza. Explore Italy on a Holland America Line cruise

Learn more about  Mediterranean cruises

In Monterosso, the most westerly of the Cinque Terre villages on the Italian Riviera, I walk along the beach, smiling as I pass by my two favorite focaccerias — because, really, how can you choose a favorite between Focacceria Antonio and Il Fornaio di Monterosso? (This morning I went to both.) I admire the familiar salmon-colored building that’s covered in the trompe l’oeil "bricks" that decorate villas all over the Italian Riviera.

Daily Beauty on the Italian Riviera

I’m thinking that there’s not much left to discover in this town that I know so well and love so deeply. With a spiaggia (beach) like this — a breathtaking crescent— it would be greedy to expect more. But I continue on this late afternoon, because walking in the sun feels so good and the breeze off the Mediterranean is so cool. A hang glider is enjoying the day too; the gentle breeze lifts his brilliant blue sails way above me.

And then suddenly, out of nowhere, there it is. At the far end of the beach is a colossus: an enormous statue of an impossibly muscled Roman god — he must be more than 40 feet tall — seemingly carved right out of the cliff face.. He is armless. He is sitting on the outcropping with his head bowed in great effort, a wooden ledge weighing down his massive shoulders. Under the ledge is a huge doorway-like opening to the sky. The statue’s face is rugged, his calves striated and straining, and his ribcage is herringboned with the kind of diamond-shaped serratus muscles that appear on antiquities and in anatomical drawings, almost never on actual humans.

I’ve been to Cinque Terre and the Italian Riviera many times and yet no one has ever mentioned this spectacular oddity; I’ve never seen the statue in an article or in a guidebook. I walk to the nearest beach bar to ask the owner about it.

Claudio is readying for the lunch crowd as I approach:

"Buon giorno, signore, parli ingles?"

"A little," he says, warily.

I point over my shoulder. "This statue, what is the name of it?"

"Ah, Gigante!" Claudio says, suddenly animated. Then he slaps his chest to show me that his blue T-shirt says Il Gigante. He named his bar in honor of the statue.

That’s Italy. Walk a little farther, see just a little bit more. There’s always something else that’s utterly extraordinary that to Italians is just part of their daily beauty. ("Daily beauty" — isn’t that the phrase that Shakespeare’s Iago used to describe the Italian captain Cassio, in Othello?) They are not jaded about it, but they know they are born to it. The feeling of daily beauty is nearly tangible here, especially here; this is the coastline that entranced the great Romantic poets Byron and Shelley, after all.

I find a table at Il Gigante and order up a storm for a trivial amount of euros: tuna bruschetta and a plate of cured meat and cheeses, topped off by a gelato affogato al cioccolato (gelato drowned in liquid chocolate). Between bites, I research the giant of Monterosso on my phone and learn that this statue of Neptune was built more than a century ago by Arrigo Minerbi, the noted sculptor who also crafted the doors of the Duomo in Milan.

Sated, I walk on the beach towards Il Gigante. The sun behind the statue creates a perfect silhouette in the sand. I raise my camera and realize I’m in the pool of light created by the clifftop doorway 90 feet up. But then in Italy, I always feel like I’m standing in the light.

Where is the Italian Riviera?

The sun-splashed Italian Riviera is divided by the city of Genoa. To the west, toward the French border, is the Riviera di Ponente (the coast of the setting sun); to the east, toward Tuscany, is the Riviera di Levante (the coast of the rising sun). The latter includes Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. But to be sure, even though I’m not on the Ponente side, I experience my share of setting suns.

In fact, Manarola’s sunsets over the Mediterranean are so famous that the town bathed in golden dusk has launched a thousand calendars and even graced the cover of Jess Walter’s recent Italy novel, Beautiful Ruins. The book, which takes place in 1962, is about a lovely young actress who flees the film set of Cleopatra in Rome to hide out from her lover.

It is a spectacular spot. Manarola may not have Monterosso’s sandy beach; but it is kissed by a clear, aquamarine cove — a sheltered and irregular body of water that assumes a serpentine shape, as it is interrupted by rock outcroppings that jut and bend this way and that. These rocky arms make for safe, protected swimming, and I explore narrow openings, gentle waves, brightly colored fish. Local kids leap from rocks, then climb back up on rope ladders. Fishermen lower their little wooden boats into the shallowest part of the cove, then row their way out toward the dropping sun.

It is something of a pilgrimage to walk away from Manarola, following the stone path that clings to the hillside, in order to be ready, camera in hand, to look back at the town as it changes color with the light. As the afternoon wears on, the hues become ever more vivid, like the colors in the coni (cones) of gelato you see everywhere: lemon, mango, strawberry. It is said that the fishermen painted their homes in such brilliant fashion so they could pick them out as they approached Manarola from the sea.

There’s a staircase above this viewpoint, marked with ceramic sign, Via dei Bambini, so I follow it up to find a little horseshoe-shaped park. The shift in perspective is subtle but unmistakable; Manarola — actually, every Cinque Terre village on the Italian Riviera — is such a living composition of architectural art and landscape and seascape that it invites you to move, just a few feet to the right or left, up or down, to register even miniscule changes. On this stunning, discreet terrace of a park, a nonchalant memorial statue called Donna Dell’uva is holding grape vines in each hand.

That’s inspiration enough for me to head up into the town to Aristide, one of my favorite Cinque Terre spots. I order up a bottle of white to accompany my gnocchi that is brushed to such a perfect shine with the local pesto that it brings to mind a plate of jewels. It tastes even better than it looks.

Ah, the pesto of Cinque Terre. Along with focaccia, pesto — which was created in this region — is ubiquitous. Trofie al pesto is a staple on every menu, and Gambero Rosso, right on Piazza Marconi, the main square in Vernazza, offers up an exemplary bowl of it. The trofie itself — a short, twisted pasta — is Ligurian, from Genoa. Sometimes it’s served with potatoes, sometimes green beans, but here it’s pure; just add a little parmigiano.

Tiny Vernazza, devoid of cars, is a little pocket of culinary curation. The village is named for its local wine, after all, and the hillsides are ringed with steeply terraced vineyards known for their white varietals. The seaside piazza is filled with outdoor seating that spills out from the restaurants — there’s barely enough space among the tables for the groups of fishermen to haul their boats to the water. (The sea bass must be caught — it’s to be my dinner.) I think a postcarb climb is in order, so I set off toward the first narrow staircase I see. Rising above the town, I look up between the rose-colored stucco walls and the green shutters to catch a sliver of blue sky.

Vernazza turns into a maze. At one point it deposits me back on the main "street" (pedestrians only, remember), which gently slopes toward the sea and boasts storefronts selling tomatoes on the vine, gelato artigianale (artisanal), and limoncello in decorative glass bottles. So I climb back up and keep going, up above the yellow octagonal bell tower of Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, up high enough to see the way the village envelops its emerald cove. Beneath me, the improbably narrow stone stairways that lead to farmhouses are nearly overgrown with shiny leaves and vines.

Hiking is a key part of experiencing the Italian Riviera— there are paths between the villages, paths above the villages, and so many opportunities for just aimless wandering — but for me, a hike had better end with a swim. Vernazza has an active little port, with passenger boats arriving from and going to Monterosso and Manarola, but at the far end of the town, between rock formations dramatically scored by the waves, there’s a place to jump in undisturbed. As I lie on my back, I realize that I am directly beneath my corner table at Ristorante Belforte, the 50-year-old Vernazza institution perched on the cliff.

The startling thing about Italy is that the proprietors of "view" restaurants that could easily rest on their locations wouldn’t dream of serving up less than a stellar meal — that’s where the family-run aspect kicks in. Tonight there will be sardines and grilled octopus and whole fresh caught bass, my favorite waiter Andrea will sing and crack jokes as usual, and my aperol spritz will catch the last rays of sun in its joyful orange color.

But for now, I’m content to float. In the Gulf of the Poets, daily beauty is everywhere: in the sea, in the cheerfully jumbled villages, in the bubbly aperitifs, and in the gelato. In Liguria, you can’t quite help yourself: Every day you become a little more of a romantic.

Traveler’s Choice | Choose one of the following included excursions.

Florence . Discover the glory of Florence’s historical center, the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to masterpieces of unparalleled art, architecture and literature. Admire Filippo Brunelleschi’s iconic Duomo and Lorenzo Ghiberti’s bronze‑cast “Doors of Paradise” — created for the Baptistery of San Giovanni to depict scenes from the Old Testament. See some of the city’s most iconic sites, including the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria. You will also visit the Fine Arts Academy to see Michelangelo’s legendary statue of David.

Lucca & Villa Reale di Marlia . The 16 th century walled city of Lucca is rich in Renaissance history, culture and exquisite architecture. Begin your immersion with a walking tour to see its imposing fortress walls and towers, historical churches, medieval palaces and narrow pedestrian streets. Visit the birthplace of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, now a museum. From there, take a short scenic drive to the incomparable Villa Reale di Marlia, where you will visit its splendid interiors and explore the gardens.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening.

Day 4 Porto Venere/Cinque Terre

Wake this morning to extraordinary views as the ship arrives in the medieval town of Porto Venere,  a UNESCO World Heritage site. Disembark after breakfast on board for a private boat cruise to the astounding Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre . The five villages that comprise the UNESCO World Heritage site of Cinque Terre, which translates to “five lands,” date to the 10 th century with communities developing amid the fortresses and castles that were built there in the Middle Ages. Clinging to the cliffs over the Mediterranean Sea and connected by small footpaths, these gravity-defying villages and their trademark colorful buildings are now part of the Cinque Terre National Park.

Visit two of Cinque Terre’s iconic villages — Vernazza and Monterosso — with time at leisure to explore at your own pace and peruse the eclectic shops and cafes. Vernazza offers postcard views from its rugged coastline and Monterosso is notable for its fortified old town and the remains of Fieschi Castle.

You will have the option to return to the ship for lunch or remain in Porto Venere for lunch on your own and extra time to enjoy the coastal scenery.

Captain’s Welcome Reception : Join your fellow passengers for the Captain’s Welcome Reception this evening, followed by dinner on board the ship.

Day 5 Bonifacio

Enjoy breakfast on board this morming as the ship arrives in Bonifacio on the French island of Corsica, which you will disembark for an excursion.

Your discovery of this dramatically situated medieval town begins with a tram ride from the harbor to the Haute Ville, or upper town, and around the plateau to enjoy panoramic views. You will then stroll through Bonifacio’s 9 th century citadel, perched high on a limestone promontory, to see such historic landmarks as Place Bir Hakeim, St. Jean Baptiste church and Le Grain de Sable — a weathered rock formation that appears to collapse into the sea. Savor the splendor of the Jardin des Vestiges and see where Napoleon stayed in 1793.

Some time will be allowed for shopping before you take the tram back to the port. Enjoy lunch on board and watch for spectacular views as the ship sails from Corsica. The rest of the day is at your leisure to relax or enjoy the ship’s many amenities.

Day 6 Sorrento

Savor breakfast on board this morning as the ship arrives in Sorrento, an outpost of the ancient Roman Republic and the scenic gateway to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. This seaside town of rose‑flushed buildings was built into picturesque cliffs high above the Tyrrhenian Sea and, as the world’s limoncello capital, is abundant with fragrant lemon and orange groves.

Disembark for an excursion to visit Pompeii.

Pompeii . Engulfed by the tephra of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the ancient city of Pompeii was frozen in time for centuries. Excavated 17 centuries after petrification, the UNESCO World Heritage‑designated ruins intimately reveal Roman daily rituals during Emperor Titus’ reign.

Explore Pompeii on foot to see the wealthy Vetti family estate and the extraordinary amphitheater — the earliest surviving stone amphitheater of the Roman world — and Temple of Jupiter. You will have the option to return to the ship for lunch or stay in Sorrento and find a local café for lunch on your own. Shuttle busses will provide transportation from the port to the Sorrento city center.

Later this afternoon, immerse yourself in Sorrento’s local traditions and curiosities on a walking tour through the historical old town that includes a chance to learn the secrets of limoncello and experience a tasting of the popular Italian liqueur. Those who prefer to continue exploring Sorrento at leisure may opt to do that instead of the tour.

Return to the ship for dinner on board this evening. Later tonight, you will be treated to a traditional tarantella performance with traditional Neapolitan songs and dance. Tarantella translates to “dance of the spider.”

Day 7 Sorrento/Positano/Isle of Capri

This morning you will disembark after breakfast for a morning excursion to the spectacular Amalfi Coast.

Admire the natural splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage‑designated, Mediterranean seascape on a panoramic drive that takes you through its secluded villages, opulent villas and sun‑drenched beaches to the medieval village of Amalfi. Enjoy a short orientation tour and some time on your own to explore the charming local boutiques and cafes. Return to the ship for lunch on board as we sail to Capri.

Disembark this afternoon for a tour of captivating Capri, the island where, legend has it, Homer’s Odysseus resisted the alluring call of the sirens. Visit the Augustus Gardens, a series of serene, flower-filled terraces that afford breathtaking panoramas of the Faraglioni rock formations rising from translucent waters and the craggy peak of Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island. You may also look for the ancient perfumery of the Certosa, Carthusia.

Return to the ship for dinner on board or choose to stay in Capri longer for dinner on your own this evening.

Day 8 Nettuno

The ship arrives in Nettuno this morning as you enjoy breakfast and an early lunch on board before disembarking for a special excursion with Distinguished Guest Speaker Dwight David Eisenhower II to visit the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial.

The 77-acre cemetery is where 7,845 of American military war dead from World War II are buried. The casualties are primarily from the July 10 to August 17, 1943 battles to liberate Sicily, the September 9, 1943 landings in Salerno and in the 1944 landings at Anzio Beach. A chapel wall shows the names of 3,095 who are missing.

Learn more about the history of these critical campaigns as Professor Eisenhower reflects on his grandfather’s World War II legacy and the battles waged here that helped bring the Allies to victory in Europe.

Captain’s Farewell Reception : Join your fellow passengers for the Captain’s Farewell Reception this evening, followed by dinner on board the ship.

Day 9 Rome/Disembark ship/Return to Home City

Following breakfast, disembark and transfer to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport for your return flight home.

Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.

Genoa cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-04-28 01:16

Port Genoa cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Genoa, Milan, Italy Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Genoa/Genova also serves as cruise port to Milano City and is located on Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean). Genova City is the capital of Liguria (coastal region in northwestern Italy) also known as the "Italian Riviera".

Genoa is approx 145 km (90 mi) from Milano and approx 185 km (115 mi) from Cannes France (direction northeast). The city has population around 600,000 (metro over 1,5 million) and is famous as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506).

Port Genova (locode ITGOA) is currently ranked Mediterranean's second-largest seaport (after Marseille France ).

In Genova are registered all vessels of the cruise shipping companies (both Carnival Corporation -owned subsidiaries) Costa and AIDA , as Italy is the preferable flag-state for Costa Group (their managing company).

Fincantieri (one of the world's largest shipbuilding companies ) owns the merchant shipbuilding yards Monfalcone , Marghera ( Venice ), Sestri Ponente (Genoa), Ancona , Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples ) and Palermo (Sicily) . The company also owns the naval shipyards Riva Trigoso (Genoa) and Muggiano ( La Spezia ).

Genova port's main ferry shipping destinations in Mediterranean Sea (both cargo and passengers) are Sicily Island (Italy), Sardinia Island (Italy), Corsica Island (France), Barcelona (Spain) and also Canary Islands (Spain). Genova is Italy's busiest cargo ship port by cargo tonnage. The port is also famous with its dismantling (shipbreaking) station where the ominous Costa Concordia ship wreckage was dismantled. The port is also one of the country's still profiting shipbuilding yards serving the yacht construction market, yacht and boat maintenance, navy shipyards.

Besides its containership and passenger (ferry and cruise) terminals, shipyards and various ship handling facilities, Genoa port also has several sailboat and yacht marinas. The list of the marinas includes - Exhibition Centre (Fiera di Genova, capacity 305 berths), Duca degli Abruzzi (capacity 350 berths), Molo Vecchio (old harbor, capacity 160 berths, max LOA length 150 m), Porto Antico (capacity 280 berths), Genova Aeroporto (for mega yachts, capacity 500 berths, max LOA length 90 m) and Fascia di Rispetto di Pra (capacity 1000 berths).

On January 31, 2019, Italian police announced the seizure of 2+ tons of pure cocaine (from Colombia) - Italy's largest drug bust since 1993. The drugs (street value ~EUR 500 million / ~USD 574M) were discovered in a TEU-container and packed into 60 bags. The unit was imported from South America and destined for Barcelona. The drugs belonged to several drug-trafficking organizations part of "Gulf Clan" (accounting for ~70% of Colombia's total cocaine export). Reportedly, the police replaced total 1801 packets of cocaine with salt, then sent the cargo on its way in a ploy to hold the drug runners. A 59-year-old Spanish man was arrested in Barcelona when he tried to collect the shipment.

Genoa cruise port

On March 23, 2013, here was christened MSC Preziosa . In the period April 29 - May 17, the Grand Celebration ship (operated by Iberocruceros, owned by Costa Group) was docked in Genoa for planned refurbishment and maintenance. Dry-dock works were performed at the shipyard San Giorgio del Porto - a major shipyard for repairs and refitting.

On November 14, 2013, the company Costa Crociere SpA announced its plans to open in late spring 2014 new offices in Genoa. The new office space is for about 190 employees. It is located on the 1st floor of the Carmonte office building (Piazza Piccapietra), neighboring with the company's Palazzo Costa headquarters. Genoa has been the company's hometown since the 1950s. The new offices became workplace for Costa employees that previously worked at Via De Marini and handled all the commercial and tour operations for Costa cruise passengers.

On June 30, 2014, the Italian Cabinet authorized the transportation (towing) of the salvaged Costa Concordia . The wreckage was towed from Giglio Island (the ship's sinking accident site) to Genoa for dismantling and recycling, The Concordia ship’s last voyage was provided by the salvage company Titan Micoperi. On July 23, 2014, at ~11 am started the towing of the wreckage towards Genoa. The ship moved at an avrg speed of 2,3 mph (3,7 kph) arriving in Genoa 4 days later (on July 27).

On November 7, 2014, here was christened the Costa Diadema . The new ship left Trieste on November 1. The maiden voyage to Genoa also visited Dubrovnik (Croatia), Corfù (Greece), Malta and Naples . The ship's inaugural cruise departed from Savona (on Nov 8).

In 2016, the port reported a record year with handled over 1 million cruise tourists. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime cruise terminals were upgraded with new equipment, including new gangways at Ponte Doria. The investment was ~EUR 2,2 million.

Since 2018, Port Genoa provides shore-power capabilities. The shore-to-ship electrical power suply technology (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plug-in directly to the grid which allows full onboard operations without using the diesel engines/generators. The Japanese company has installed such systems in the USA ports Los Angeles CA , San Francisco CA , Juneau AK , as well as in other European ports ( Goteborg Sweden , Travemunde Germany , Livorno Italy ).

On July 7, 2018, during Costa Cruises' 70th-anniversary celebrations in Genoa (Costa Zena Festival) was constructed a huge waterslide (length 340 m/1115 ft) designed to break Guinness World Record for "longest slid in 1 hour". The slide was installed on Via XX Settembre street and helped to establish the world's new record of 775 km (481,6 mi) sliding in 1 hour. Another world record broken was for longest bunting string - 2070 maritime signal flags were connected into 2 km long line along the festival's areas. At Old Port and Piazza Caricamento were performed live 60 performers (street musicians, dancers, artists, acrobats), 29 singers, DJs, comedians. Piazza de Ferrari had for kids games, workshops and parties with mascots. The evening concert (at 8.30 pm) was on Radio 105 stage (opposite Piazza delle Feste) and included performances by popular Italian singers and bands.

For season 2019, the cruise port expects 30% increase in passengers (to 1,3 million), most of whom (around 750,000) embarking (homeport).

In July-August 2023 was completed the Cesare Imperiale Viaduct's retrofitting project. The waterfront promenade is in the Stazioni Marittime Terminal's area. The 300-m/ 980-ft long viaduct/road bridge (connecting Ponte dei Mille with Ponte Andrea Doria) is annually used by 1+ million cruise tourists.

The Maritime Station is close to downtown (old town), but in an industrial area, so it is better to use a taxi. In 2016, Stazioni Marittime's investments were EUR 2,2 million. Part of the new equipment were Ponte Doria Terminal's new gangways.

In July 2022 were annou nced plans to equip Stazioni Marittime's terminals with an additional pier (alongside Ponte Dei Mille West) with capacity to berth the world's biggest passenger liners (LOA length 330 m / 1083 ft)).

The project followed recent dredging works (for deepening the waterway) and included the existing quay's extension (from 290 to 380 m / 1247 ft), construction of a new boarding terrace and terminal building, and building a new quay line (at Calata Santa Limbania) alongside the former grain silos Hennebique (200 m long building). The quay (to be enhanced by 12 m in width) will serve the adjacent cruise terminal and will also provide mooring for leisure boats during no-ship days.

(NEW) Genoa Ponte Parodi cruise terminal

Ponte Parodi terminal is currently under construction. Its quay was once used for grain traffic (silos).

The Ponte Parodi cruise terminal project involves redesigning a 23000 m2 (247600 ft2) waterfront area part of the former industrial area named Ponte Parodi.

The new pier complex was designed by De Carlo and features a series of multi-functional spaces to be used for exhibitions and various commercial purposes on the pier. These buildings are enclosed in large glass surfaces and adjacent to a restaurant, cafes and pubs, a disco, gyms, swimming pools.

  • Medieval quarter: located on Piazza San Lorenzo. The medieval centre houses the Church of San Donato, the Church of Sant’Agostino frescoes, the Museo dell’Architettura e Scultura Ligure and the Porta Soprana. The most popular are the San Lorenzo Cathedral and the Tesoro Museum.
  • Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace) is a former residence of the Doges of Genoa. It dates from the 14th century and displays different historic exhibitions. It is located on 9 Piazza Matteotti.
  • Galata Museum of the Sea: this is the largest museum of maritime history in the Mediterranean. It is located on 1 Calata de Mari.
  • Acuario di Genova: the largest aquarium in the continent. The Acuario di Genoa houses more than 800 marine species. It is located on Ponte Spinola.
  • Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco: both are located in Via Garibaldi and currently work as art galleries. Palazzo Rosso displays Durer, Caravaggio and Titian works. Palazzo Bianco offers Rubens and Van Dyck paintings

  • The Mediterranean

Vibrant harbor of Portofino with colorful buildings and luxury yachts, epitomizing Italian Riviera elegance.

Yacht Charter Italian Riviera

Rich history, a culture steeped in architecture and gastronomy, and awe-inspiring natural beauty are found in spades when you embark on an Italian Riviera yacht charter.

Rivaling its French counterpart on the Cote d’Azur, the Italian Riviera or Ligurian Riviera encompasses incredible beauty, history, and culture, welcoming charterers to experience a relaxed atmosphere, unspoiled villages, and authentic cuisine. The subtle curve of northwest Italy is home to the quaint fishing village of Portofino along the Amalfi Coast, the historical center of Genoa, and the lusting romance of Cinque Terre.

There are few better ways to explore this enchanting region than by luxury superyacht. Cruise the stunning coastlines, go ashore to enjoy classic Italian fare, walk the streets to immerse yourself in the warm and welcoming culture, and enjoy stunning sunsets over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea while sipping enchanting Italian wines.

The best things to see and do in and around the Italian Riviera

Luxury yacht charter: portofino.

The brightly colored homes of the beautiful fishing village of Portofino play an excellent backdrop to afternoon cocktails aboard your yacht. Head ashore to shop high-end boutiques, indulge in delightful local seafood restaurants, admire medieval castles, and take in beautiful sights.

Since the 1950s, Portofino has been a favorite spot of the Hollywood elite; the quintessential Portofino restaurant Puny played host to the engagement of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as European royalty. With your superyacht as your home base, there is no better way to spend an afternoon than frolicking around this world-renowned locale.

Luxury yacht charter: Cinque Terre

Visitors might also explore the iconic Cinque Terre (CHEEN-kweh TEHR-reh) during a luxury crewed Italian Riviera yacht charter known for its dramatic coastal scenery peppered with high cliffs, picturesque fishing villages, and refined offerings.

Cinque Terre, “Five Lands,” is a distinct area comprising the five adjacent towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, beautiful fishing villages. These unique villages each boast their own characteristics, and each must be experienced.

The best means of doing so is walking the trail through the hills overlooking the ocean that meanders through stunning botanical gardens and olive orchards. Known as Via dell’ Amore, this easy and picturesque 25-minute walk takes you from Riomaggiore and Monterosso. A sunset cruise on board your luxury yacht past Vernazza, one of the most striking of the lands, will offer scenes straight out of an Italian romance film.

Luxury yacht charter: Genoa

In 2004, the capital city of Genoa was named the European Capital of Culture, and for a good reason. The cobbled streets of Genoa are brimming with history, art galleries, music, and architecture. Also, a member of the World Heritage List, Genoa has so much to offer every type of charterer. From historic homes and palaces to luxury shopping to abundant museums and a myriad of exceptional restaurants, both history buffs and foodies will be impressed with Genoa.

Wine aficionados can also venture into the picturesque Ligurian hills to discover the region’s vineyards and wineries. Sample local varietals, such as Vermentino and Pigato, and learn about the winemaking traditions of the area.

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

cruise italian riviera

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect on board?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished earlier this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that was previously on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is located in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill, serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 currently starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.
