The Port of Barcelona is a popular departure port for Mediterranean cruises and is a little less than an hour’s walk away from the center of the city. You can also take a bus shuttle service that runs between the port terminal and the famous Christopher Columbus monument that welcomes visitors at one of the ends of Las Ramblas. Another option is to travel by taxi, which will get you downtown in about 20 minutes.

La sagrada família.

Barcelona’s most iconic monument and an absolute must-see for any visitor is the world-renowned La Sagrada Familia, envisioned and created by the famous architect, Antoni Gaudi. As a religious man, Gaudi devoted a large part of his life to this majestic, towering cathedral and unfortunately died before its completion. The sheer size of its majestic towers and the immaculate detail displayed on every square inch of the cathedral and basilica—both indoors and outdoors—is unparalleled. La Sagrada Familia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, and Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the basilica in November of 2010.

Santa Maria del Mar Basilica

The Santa Maria del Mar Basilica might seem simple when compared to La Sagrada Familia, but this Gothic cathedral is equally as stunning. It is the only surviving church in the pure Catalan Gothic style and is notable because of its intricate stained-glass windows and unifying proportions. While most churches took centuries to build, Santa Maria del Mar was completed in only 55 years, from 1329 to 1383. Known as the “People’s Church,” the basilica has suffered through extensive damage twice: First during the 1428 earthquake and later in 1936, when rioters burned parts of its facade for 11 days straight during the Spanish Civil War. After both instances, the cathedral was rebuilt to its former state.

Casa Milà (Pedrera)

In 1905, Pere Mila and his wife, Roser Segimon, purchased a plot of land measuring over 1,800 square meters and commissioned Gaudi to build a new property for them. This gigantic structure—often the ridicule of their peers and contemporaries—became their home with attached apartments that the couple would rent for profit. Casa Mila became known as La Pedrera (“the stone quarry”) because its façade seemed nothing like a mansion, but more of a strange stone monstrosity to locals. Casa Mila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Casa Batlló

In 1904, Josep Batlló commissioned Gaudi to build this stunning, dreamlike structure. The tiny details will astound you, and the surprising dragon-shaped roof makes Casa Batlló impossible to miss during your visit to Barcelona. The imaginative design was inspired by both the ocean waves and dragons, and stands out even among the ornately-decorated homes that line the Passeig de Gracia. The famous pedestrian walkway known as Las Ramblas is nearly a mile long and is one of the city’s major thoroughfares, leading from just across from the Barcelona cruise terminal port to Plaza de Catalunya in the center of old Barcelona. As you stroll, you’ll pass restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, street performers, street food vendors, and a famous food market called Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria (or simply “la Boqueria”). If you stroll the entire length of Las Ramblas, you’ll end up in Plaza de Catalunya, an enormous square with fountains, a small park, and plenty of photo-worthy sights.

The Olympic Stadium was actually built before the Olympics existed, but it was remodeled for the event held in Barcelona in 1992. Explore Park Güell

Park Güell is yet another stunning representation of Gaudi’s unique design and vision. In 1900, a rich count purchased a massive plot of land and designated it to be a ‘garden city’ for the city’s wealthiest patrons. Gaudi’s design of the park and homes inside the garden city proved to be too elaborate for their time, and the project was unfortunately abandoned in 1914. The two houses and park grounds make up a magical place that will sweep you away as it showcases some of Barcelona’s famous sights and symbols.

Once a quaint fishing village, this highly sought-after area is now an adorable beachfront neighborhood with brightly colored houses and a charming beach that faces the Mediterranean Sea. If you continue to follow the waterfront, you eventually reach Port Olimpic with its bars, cafes, and small shops. Stop in the Casino de Barcelona to try your luck or enjoy a floor show.

Barcelona was conquered and inhabited by the Visigoths in the early 5th century, transforming it into the capital of all Hispania for a few years. Barcelona became a hub for Catalan Separatism during the Catalan Revolt of 1640 to 1652 against Philip IV of Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona continued to thrive as the second-largest city in Spain in the center of a region that remained relatively prosperous.

In recent history, the Summer Olympics came to Barcelona in 1992. To prepare for the games and the massive crowds that would accompany them, many industrial buildings and businesses that lined the waterfront in Barcelona were demolished to make room for a two-mile beach for tourists to enjoy. New construction projects popped up all around the city, resulting in more beaches, parks, and nature-centered areas. All these changes and improvements to city life transformed Barcelona into one of the most-visited cities in the world.

If you prefer to explore the city on your own, you can also use any of the bus routes, metro lines, or taxis found all over the city.

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

In Barcelona, the currency is the euro. You won’t have any trouble finding ATMs throughout the city, especially in heavily populated areas like Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter. Should you need currency exchange services, you will find these in the airport, most major banks, and in currency exchange offices on Las Ramblas. The exchange offices are typically open for later hours than banks, but you will receive a better exchange rate at most banks. Tipping in Barcelona is not expected, but if you do feel inclined to do so, leave anything from 5% to 10% as a token of appreciation for great service.

Cruise ships dock at the waterfront in Port Vell, which is located at the southern end of Las Ramblas Boulevard in the centre of Barcelona. Terminals are situated at either Adossat Quay (A, B, C and D) and at the World Trade Centre pier (North, South and East).

Hotels in Barcelona with shuttle to Cruise Port?

Cruise ships dock at the waterfront in Port Vell , at the southern end of Las Ramblas in the centre of Barcelona. The majority of cruise passengers choose to stay in the central areas.

Nearest hotel is the Eurostars Gran Marina . If you’re departing from the North, South, or East terminal at the World Trade Centre (WTC) you can easily walk from this hotel to your ship (no shuttle needed) . However, most larger ships depart from the Quai Adossat at terminal A, B, C or D which is over a mile from the Eurostars Gran Marina hotel. Then it’s better to take an inexpensive taxi to your designated cruise terminal.

Several hotels are located really close to Barcelona cruise port but still are too far to walk, esp. with your luggage. Taxis in Barcelona are relatively cheap so it’s very easy to transfer from your pre-cruise hotel to your cruise terminal. Just ask your hotel concierge or front desk to arrange a taxi for you.

Which Barcelona hotels offer a cruise transfer?

Taxi’s are plentiful and not very expensive so it’s very easy to get to your cruise terminal. The hotel porter can flagged down a taxi for you or the hotel concierge or front desk will call one for you. All very easy. Price will be around 15 Euro, depending on traffic. Barcelona hotels can always organize a transfer to the cruise port for you at an additional cost.

You can also arrange a private transfer yourself, which will be very convenient but more expensive than catching a taxi.

Where to Stay in Barcelona near cruise port ?

As mentioned before the nearest hotel, and one of the best, is the Eurostars Gran Marina .

Popular is also La Rambla boulevard , within close distance of the port. Nearby is Plaza Catalunya square, departing point of HOHO buses. It’s only a short walk to La Rambla and many restaurants. Hotels around Plaça de Catalunya are somewhat cheaper than around La Rambla. Budget-friendly properties can be found in both areas. Several first class properties have a rooftop pool.

One of the best areas for a pre or post cruise stay is the Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gotico) , around the Cathedral.

A nice central, popular and great value hotel close to the port with a rooftop pool and terrace is Hotel Jazz , located close to Plaza Catalunya. If you want to stay on La Rambla, Hotel 1898 is an excellent choice. Reasonably priced accommodations close to port include Andante and Hotel Canton .

Barceloneta hotels are close to the beach. An El Prat barcelona airport-area hotel is 30 minutes away by taxi.

One of the busiest cruise ports of the Mediterranean

The Port of Barcelona is one of the busiest cruise ports of the Mediterranean and Europe.

Currently there are 7 modern international passenger terminals which are air conditioned, and have foreign exchange, duty free and souvenir shops, bar-restaurant, and a taxi rank. Vessels anchor at the waterfront in Port Vell, which is at the southern end of La Rambla, the most famous street of the city. Popular ports of call on voyages departing from the port include Civitavecchia (Rome Italy) , Piraeus (Athens in Greece) , Venice Italy and Marseille in France .

Moll Adossat Quay and World Trade Centre Pier

Larger ships dock at the Moll Adossat Quay cruise terminals A,B,C and D. These terminals are located about 2km or 1,2mi from La Rambla. When carrying luggage it’s not recommended to walk to the city centre.

The best option is to take a taxi from any of Barcelona’s hotels to the cruise port. It’s quick and not so expensive.

You can also catch the bus from the monument of Christopher Columbus on Plaza de Colon (T3 PORTBUS shuttle).

World Trade Center Pier

Smaller vessels dock right at the World Trade Centre pier near the Eurostars Gran Marina hotel, closer to the city centre (15 minutes walk from La Rambla and public transport network, bus and metro). These three terminals are situated on the Moll de Barcelona (Barcelona Pier). The seaport terminals are called South Terminal S (Moll 18C), The East Terminal E (Moll 18B) and the North Terminal N (Moll 18A). Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises start or end many Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona Cruise Port.

The famous Las Ramblas divides the port and the old town, where you can sample Barcelona’s tapas and try the local Catalan cuisine. La Rambla is a popular tourist spot. It’s a busy and lively tree-lined boulevard stretching for 1200 metres between the Barri Gotic and El Raval. The street connects Plaça de Catalunya with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell . Stroll along Las Ramblas with its flower shops and kiosks. Stop at La Boqueria , a famous public market. Nearby is the Liceu, Barcelona’s opera house.

Located in the medieval quarter of the city is the towering La Sagrada Familia basilica. This world famous church dates back to 1882 and is designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi.

Not to be missed is Casa Battlo , another masterpiece of Gaudi. It’s a theatrical and undulating building with shimmering colours and wonderful twisted shapes. Park Güell, also designed by Gaudi, is set on the hill of El Carmel and gives you a nice view of the city.

Another highlight of Barcelona is the Picasso Museum located in the Barri Gothic, displaying works of Pablo Picasso.

La Rambla – Las Ramblas

Most famous street of the city with many restaurants and street performers. Properties close to La Rambla are really well situated to several metro lines, which is easy to explore the rest of the city. The port is only a short cab ride away.

Plaza de Catalunya

Plaza de Catalunya is set in the heart of the city. It’s in a great location for getting around. Gaudi’s Casa Batllo and La Pedrera, on Passeig de Gracia Avenue, are within a 10-minute walk away. The Ramblas and Gothic quarter can be reached on foot.

Gothic Quarter – Cathedral

Oldest part of the city. It’s one of the best areas to stay, not far from La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya. Plenty of Tapas Bars and shopping can be found nearby. The Old Port and Marina are less than one kilometre away.

Beach – Barceloneta

Beachfront area of Barcelona. It’s the area where the fisherman used to live. Nowadays it’s famous for its great fish restaurants. The most famous hotel is the 5 star W Barcelona with its sail like structure.

Barcelona El Prat International Airport — the main international airport is located approximately 10 miles or 16 km from the pier and Barcelona city centre.

You can get to the city centre by taxi, which takes around 30 minutes. It’s the easiest way.

Other options are the Aerobus, a shuttle bus that takes you directly to the city centre, or by local bus (cheapest way). Aerobus A1: Plaça Catalunya – Airport (terminal T1)

Aerobus A2: Plaza Catalunya – Airport (terminal T2)

Line 46: Plaza Espana – Airport

Alternatively you can take also a train which runs every 30 minutes between the airport and the city centre.

Some properties close by provide a free airport shuttle service from/to the airport. Many offer also free Wi-Fi.

Currency and Language

The currency of Spain is the Euro (€). You can find ATM’s along the city. There is mostly a currency exchange service available at the terminal during the embarkation and debarkation process.

Spanish is the language in Barcelona. On touristic spots English is widely spoken.

Long Stay Car Parking

There is no long-term car parking permitted in the direct area of the cruise terminal, in accordance with the standard port security rules. There is only a passenger drop-off area.

Long-stay parking is available at the nearby World Trade Center Barcelona. Special rate for cruise passengers are provided : EUR 75 per week (including VAT), minimum stay 7 days. Extra day: 10€.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck Wednesday in the Spanish northeastern port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there, officials said.

Authorities say 69 Bolivians were not being allowed to leave the ship because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area. Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press she received reports some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said, adding she heard it was possible the Bolivians would be transferred to a different ship.

Spain’s national police was looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said some 1,500 passengers were on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

Bolivia’s deputy foreign affairs minister, Fernando Pérez, said the country was waiting “to see what the Spanish authorities decide what to do.”

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country’s Consulate General in Barcelona “are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case,” coordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

It said the “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil. We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination.”

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.

Spain to deport dozens of Bolivians whose false visas held up cruise ship in Barcelona

MADRID (AP) — Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises, which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil.

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.

Spain has initiated the deportation of 65 out of the 69 Bolivians who found themselves stranded aboard an MSC ship in Port Barcelona  since April 2nd. They arrived in the Catalan capital without valid visas to enter the Schengen Area.

The passengers embarked on the MSC Armonia ship from Brazil but were unable to disembark in Barcelona due to visa issues. The scheduled flight to repatriate these passengers is set for Thursday, April 11th.

MSC will cover the costs of the flight, facilitating the return of 65 passengers to their home country. However, 4 passengers (3 siblings, two of whom are minors, along with the daughter of one of the siblings) will remain in Catalonia due to their family ties in the region. Their parents reside in Catalonia, and one of them holds Spanish citizenship.

Upon arrival in Barcelona on April 2nd, the tourists were unable to disembark due to their lack of valid visas. Despite some passengers requesting asylum, their petitions were not granted.

Departing a day later than scheduled, the vessel left Barcelona on April 4 with 1,500 passengers aboard. During this time, the 69 stranded Bolivians temporarily resided on another MSC cruise ship while awaiting a resolution.

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality. 

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet. 

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

A cruise ship stuck in Barcelona resumes sailing after passengers accused of having fake visas were removed and investigated by authorities

A cruise ship carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck in port in Barcelona after Spanish authorities investigated 69 Bolivian passengers.

The police believed that the Bolivian passengers' visas were fake and are investigating, Spanish police authorities told news agency Efe .

The MSC Armonia cruise ship set off from Brazil and was due to continue through the Mediterranean, with some passengers switching over in Barcelona, Efe reported.

The delay has meant that planned stops in France, Greece, and Croatia have been canceled which has caused some disgruntled passengers to leave the boat early, Reuters reported.

Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers. However, the ship had to stay in port until the situation was resolved.

In a statement shared with Business Insider, MSC Cruises confirmed that the cruise would resume sailing on Thursday.

"Thanks to the cooperation with the Spanish authorities, the group of Bolivian guests has been disembarked and will now follow the immigration process as required by law. We are fully assisting with this process," they said.

The spokesperson confirmed that the passengers' visas were found to be not valid for entry and that the Spanish authorities are investigating.

The passengers' will be held on another boat while Spanish authorities decide whether they will be deported or granted asylum, Reuters reported, citing the government's regional delegation in Catalonia.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told the AP that she had received reports that some of the Bolivian passengers had been duped into obtaining fake visas.

MSC Cruises is one of the world's largest cruise lines, known for its long luxury trips that can set sail for months at a time.

Its new four-month-long world cruise, which will set off in 2026, is expected to cost passengers between $15,800 and $38,210 per person, depending on their cabin.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday. 

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
